he 20th Singapore Cricket Club International Hockey Sixes will be held on 1 and 2 March 2014 on the Padang.

The tournament has very quickly become one of the most popular in the region and will feature 36 Men’s and 24 Ladies teams from Asia, Oceania, and Europe. It is an event that has been graced by Olympic and World Cup Champions and this year promises to be no less exciting with top teams from Australia, Japan, Malaysia and Sri Lanka confirming participation. Seethadevi Sports Club, the Ladies Cup Champions from 2013, will be returning to defend their title. In addition, Asian Champions KL Hockey Club, Perth Toyota League Team, YMCC and Cairns Hockey Association Colts will also return to challenge for the honours in 2014.

The Sixes are also popular for the marvellous social event that it is. The theme for 2014 is ‘Swinging Sixties’ and it promises two entertaining evenings of partying for all concerned. So whether one plays or just enjoys watching hockey, mark the weekend in your calendar for two days of very special pleasure and amusement.

Dear Members,

Let me start 2014 by wishing everyone a Happy New Year and Gong Xi Fa Cai! Another year, another new beginning and my General Committee and I look forward to working with you, the Members, to continue projecting the SCC to its prestigious position of being the premier sports and social club in the region.

First and foremost, it is my privilege and honour to welcome Mr Anthony Michael Grice back to the General Committee as our newly elected Deputy President at the Special General Meeting held on 7 November 2013.

Secondly, congratulations to the Marketing & Communications Subcommittee which has worked tirelessly over the past months to bring you the ‘new and improved’ Padang Magazine – the magazine looks great!

The year 2013 has come and gone pretty fast. The Club has been kept pretty busy with excellent support from Members, Sports Sections and the various Subcommittees.

The Sports Sections have performed extremely well in team and individual competitions, both locally and overseas, as well as continuing with their busy sports programmes.

The social scene has been excellent with top bands and weekly events. Major events such as the Chinese New Year Celebration, the SCC Night Race Extravaganza and the New Year’s Eve Party have kept Members well involved.

I am confident that 2014 will be even better with the support of all Members. I urge all Members to join in and make 2014 a memorable year.

Ang Pow Fund The Club treasures and values our staff and your recent contribution to the Ang Pow Fund goes a long way in showing your appreciation for the staff. A big ‘Thank You’ to all for your generous contributions.

Events & Promotions In January and February, make a date with us and take part in the array of events scheduled just for you. Bring your family to The Oval this Chinese New Year for ‘Lo Hei’ from 31 January to 14 February. Then come back for the main event on 7 February when the Club ushers in the Year of the Horse with special performances.

Make this year’s Valentine’s Day on 14 February more exquisite and romantic by bringing your loved ones to the Padang Restaurant for that special Valentine’s Day dinner. To escape the hustle and bustle of the city take a breather with a relaxing Afternoon Tea at The Oval or Main Lounge, available daily from 3.00pm to 5.00pm.

Sports Be sure to mark your calendars with the 20th edition of the SCC International Hockey 6s Tournament, scheduled for the weekend of 1 & 2 March 2014 at the Padang with an astounding 60 participating teams from Asia and the Region. The Hockey 6s Organising Committee is putting in all hours and hard work to again make this tournament a resounding success. My thanks go to the Organising Committee for its tireless efforts.

To conclude, the General Committee and I wish to thank all Members, the various Subcommittees and the Management for all their unrelenting support, constructive feedback and faithful patronage in making 2013 an enjoyable and memorable year.

Launch of New Jackpot Machines 25 October 2013

n Friday 25 October evening, the Club launched O three new machines at the Jackpot Room – the ‘Qin Shi Huang’, ‘Legend of Monkey King’ and ‘Justice Bao’.

President Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh addressed Members briefly, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony to formally launch the new machines.

Members were then invited to a scrumptious buffet dinner and the opportunity to try their hand at the new machines. Members who attended were presented with a special door gift. Baton Relay is a much ThelovedQueen’s tradition of the Commonwealth

Games and symbolises the coming together of all Commonwealth nations and territories in preparation for the four-yearly festival of sport and culture.

The Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay is the curtain-raiser to the XX Commonwealth Games. Over a period of 288 days the baton visited 70 nations and territories, cover 190,000 kilometres and involve a third of the world’s population, making it the world’s most engaging relay.

On 9 October 2013 the Queen’s Baton Relay was launched at Buckingham Palace, at a ceremony where the Queen placed her message to the Commonwealth into the baton.

The baton will be relayed by thousands of people throughout the Commonwealth, each one honoured by

their own nation to participate in this unique tradition. Magical memories were created on this journey across continents, terrains and time zones.

From Sydney Harbour Bridge to the forests of Rwanda; from the Pacific Islands to the Rocky Mountains of Canada, the baton will showcase each nation and territory in the Commonwealth.

For the Singapore leg, the baton was brought all around Singapore with short stop-overs in a convoy of Porsches where the baton was handed from one athlete to another.

On Friday 25 October 2013, the Singapore Cricket Club was honoured to be chosen as one of these strategic stops in recognition of its origins and standing as a premier sports club.

The convoy was welcomed by President Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh, Chairman Games Control Board, Mr Sher Baljit Singh, Marketing & Communications Subcommittee Chairlady, Ms Cynthia Robless and SCC General Manager, Mr Nigel Stearns.

The finish line will be in the host nation, Scotland, just in time for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Glasgow, where the Queen will read aloud her message to the Commonwealth.

W

ith license to party, Members and guests gathered at the Clubhouse on the eve of the New Year to usher in 2014 to the theme of Casino Royale. While the ladies were beautifully dressed in lavish ‘Bond Girl’ evening gowns, the men were equally smart in their tuxedos, and their spirited impersonation of Ian Fleming’s Double-0-Seven – it was an evening of sheer glamour and just good fun.

After the cocktails and the welcome drink of a glass of champagne, Members and guests proceeded to a splendid dinner spread at the restaurants specially prepared to suit the occasion.

The one and only, Douglas O and his band immediately got everyone up on their feet the moment they started to perform.

The night was joyous and the atmosphere was truly delightful.

Towards the later part of the evening, just before the clock struck twelve, Members and guest were invited to write their New Year’s wishes on balloons, which were then released at the stroke of midnight to symbolize a new beginning. After the fireworks signifying the start of the New Year, the solemn tune of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ was heard as the Gurkha pipers marched in – and everyone raised their glasses for a toast.

Here’s to 2014 and a Happy New Year filled with much happiness and blessings…

Children’s Christmas Parties 7 & 14 December 2013

O

ver two consecutive Saturdays in December, the Club hosted two special children’s parties in celebration of Christmas.

On 7 December 2013, as part of SCC’s Christmas tradition, the Club invited the children from the Down Syndrome Association back to the Clubhouse to join in on a day of merriment with activities, sumptuous food and joyful carolling.

On the following week, 14 December 2013, the Clubhouse was transformed into a magical ‘Toyland’ to host our ‘little’ Members and guests for another day of fun activities, including an indoor ‘picnic’ at the Padang Restaurant.

All in all, everyone had a great time spreading the festivities and of course, each child was presented with a special present from Santa Claus. Special thanks to the Joosa Family, Mr Rohit and Mr Phil Cunningham for helping us to make these events, a great success.

Remembrance Day 11 November 2013

Lest we forget.

At 11.00am on 11 November 1918, the fighting on the battlefields of World War I ceased as the armistice between the Allies and the Germans came into effect.

Since then, 11 November has been recognised as ‘Remembrance Day’ and now serves as a commemoration of the sacrifice made by the military in defending the nation.

As an important tradition witnessed in many Commonwealth nations, the Club holds a simple tribute on this date each year to honour the sacrifices made by the armed forces. In attendance were the Club’s General Committee, Members and guests. The President and Deputy President represented the Club in the laying of the wreath.

We would like to thank Dr Brian Farrell who presented the introduction as well as distinguished Defence Advisors from the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand who were present at this commemoration.

Diwali Night Celebration 8 November 2013 Diwali, also known as the ‘Festival of Lights’, is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil and hope over despair.

In celebration of this colourful festival, the Club hosted its Members to a night of food and entertainment on 8 November 2013. In keeping with tradition and to to kick off the evening, President Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh was invited to light up the diyas (lamps). Light is significant in Hinduism as it signifies purity, goodness, good luck and power.

Members were treated to a sumptuous spread of Indian cuisine and a variety of games and entertainment, including a best-dressed competition. With a captivating performance by a renowned belly dancer from Argentina and the very popular and energetic performance by the Bhangra Boys, it was a truly enjoyable evening had by all.

The evening then continued with great music which never fails to get everyone who attended up on their feet and to party the night away.

JUNIOR SPORTS MEMBERS Squash Section Scribe & Convenor: Manmindar Singh

T

he Squash Section’s highly successful junior programme has been in place for more than a decade now. We have close to 70 JSMs currently who have over the years contributed in no small measure to the reputation of SCC as the premier squash club in Singapore as underscored by the numerous individual and team titles that they have garnered.

In this year’s SSRA Annual National Squash League, we entered a total of 13 teams across the Men’s, Ladies and Veterans divisions. For the Men’s E Grade league, we had two teams with one team consisting entirely of JSMs. Most of the JSMs were playing for SCC for the first time.

Led by Captain Sean Lim and Vice-captain Isaiah Yeo, the team won the league comfortably. They did not drop a single match through the course of the season. The boys handled themselves well in the competition despite playing more seasoned players from the other clubs. With their game continuing to improve with consistent hard work and the success they enjoyed this season, they will be moving up to a higher grade in 2014. Whilst the competition will be stiffer, we expect these JSMs to again come through the league victorious.

We also fielded all junior teams in the Ladies Division 1 and 2 leagues. The teams fared well, coming in second and third in Division 1 and 2 respectively. Juniors also featured prominently in the other teams. About half of the team that won the prestigious Men’s Premier Grade title were juniors. In the Men’s B Grade, we had two teams that came in second and third in the league with juniors making up three-quarters of the teams.

Apart from the league, the juniors also showed their class by bagging five of the nine titles up for grabs at the National Championships held in July. Former JSM Vivian Rhamanan once again reached the pinnacle as Singapore’s National Champion by winning the Men’s Open title. Not to be outdone, junior Mao Shi Hui sealed the double for the Club by becoming the Ladies’ National Champion. Following in the footsteps of their older club mates, juniors Alethea Sim, Chua Man Chin and Lee Ming An won the Girls U-19, Boys U-17 and Boys U-15 titles respectively. Other notable performances from our juniors were Sherilyn Yang and Mao Shi Yuan’s third and fourth placing respectively in the Ladies Open, Nikki Pang and Annabelle Lim’s second and third placing respectively in the Girls U-17, Christabelle Lim’s third placing in the Girls U-15, Timothy Leong’s forth and second placing in the Men’s Open and Boys U-19 respectively and Rayden Tan’s second placing in the Boys U-17.

Our juniors’ performance this year is a repeat of similar stellar performances we have seen year in and year out over the past many years. As such, to say that the junior programme has to date paid plenty of dividends may at times understate things.

Their contribution has been immense! Whilst we continue to attract good juniors and they continue to earn accolades for the Club, we will need to increase our efforts to keep as many of these juniors as possible at the Club for the long term. This is fundamental if we are to remain the premier squash club in Singapore and also in the region.

P

acific Islanders give master class in Sevens rugby as Asia Pacific Dragons beat Penguins to take the Ablitt Cup at SCC 7s.

What a fabulous weekend of world class Sevens rugby! The 66th SCC International Club Rugby Sevens Tournament featured some top-class rugby on the first weekend in November with newcomers, the Asia Pacific Dragons romping home against crowd favourites Penguins to take the Ablitt Cup for the first time. The weather was terrific, the rains stayed away and the full house enjoyed copious amounts of cold beers, a great atmosphere and some marvellous entertainment both on and off the pitch.

With the competition stronger than ever before, even the Friday and Saturday Pool games produced some close encounters. In particular Pool A was very strong, with Auckland, Western Province and Sunnybank all playing hugely competitive matches and both Auckland and Sunnybank coming from behind to score winning tries with nothing left on the clock to beat a desperately unlucky Western Province Institute side and to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats.

The Asia Pacific Dragons, making their debut at the SCC Sevens, with four Fijian IRB Sevens internationals in their ranks plus IRB Sevens World Player of the Year, Samoan Mike Pesamino, impressed in the Pool round, cruising to victory against Northland, NS Wanderers and Impala and making their intentions clear that they had come to win the Tournament.

Last year’s winners Daveta, also won all three Pool games against Aussie stalwarts Casuarina and Cottesloe and hosts SCC, and there was much talk of an-all Fijian Ablitt Cup final 34

amongst the Guinness- fuelled experts in the crowd. It was also Casuarina Cougar’s 30th consecutive appearance at the Tournament, a remarkable achievement indeed. The Penguins also looked very strong with a handful of England and New Zealand IRB Sevens players in the squad and looked comfortable in Pool E, recording good wins against the France U20 team, East Arnhem and Perth club, Palmyra.

The weekend was wonderfully enhanced with some schools rugby with the finals of the SCC Rugby Academy Digital Realty Cup with children from U6 to U13 playing on the Padang as well as the finals of the SCC Schools & Colleges Tournament where six local schools battled it out in finals of the U14, U16 and U18 age groups.

And so to finals day on the Sunday and the strongest eight teams moved into the quarter finals. Auckland were unfortunate

to draw a rampant Asia Pacific Dragons in the first match, going down 35-7, before a strong Borneo Eagles team cantered to a 31-0 win over the young Frenchmen. Then came the surprise of the weekend.

To say that Sunnybank were up for it in their match against Cup holders Daveta would be an understatement and they tore into the Fijians like a dog at a beetroot. In what was possibly the best game of the weekend in terms of physicality, Sunnybank edged ahead and just wouldn’t let Daveta back in, despite their best efforts, and when the final whistle went, Sunnybank were 19-12 up and in the semi-finals. Incredible stuff and one of the biggest shocks of the Ablitt Cup in recent years. In another very tight game, the Penguins squeezed past Northland from New Zealand 21-17, with the Kiwis unable to convert their tries from the corner.

It was always going to be difficult for Sunnybank to repeat their efforts from their Daveta win and they faced an improving Penguins side in the Cup semi-final, who despite losing England speedster Marcus Watson to a horrific leg-break in the second half, ran out 36-14 winners. In the other Cup semi-finals, the APD’s cruised past the Borneo Eagles 31-7 to set the stage for an exciting Ablitt Cup Final.

In the Bowl, the entertaining NS Wanderers team from Negri Sembilan in Malaysia overcame East Arnhem in the final game to win 15-14 and lift the trophy, a great result for SCC members Jonty Kay and Alex Chew who played their hearts out for the Malaysian team.

The Plate final was an all-African affair played between Western Province from Cape Town and Impala from Kenya, and it was the boys from South Africa who won 17- 5, putting a tough Pool behind them, and playing some great Sevens rugby throughout Sunday to take a thoroughly deserved Plate win.

And so to the Ablitt Cup final. With Penguins a mix of England and New Zealand, against the APD’s, predominantly Fijian with a star Samoan in the line-up, a highly anticipated Cup Final kicked off. It was clear from the outset that the Fijians had identified Penguins playmaker and Player of the Tournament, Sam Edgerley as the dangerman and by closing him down early, restricted Penguins open running style.

It wasn’t long before the APD’s took a two try lead and it looked as if they would run away with the win, but Penguins came storming back, scoring a brilliant try in the corner to up the ante and show the mighty Fijians they weren’t going to roll over. A try on the stroke of half time by Samoan Pesamino gave the APD’s a big advantage at the break and in the second half, they ripped the tiring Penguins apart with Player of the Final Pesamino scoring a hat-trick as they ran-out 43 – 5 winners in a superb display of Sevens rugby.

A brilliant end to a fantastic weekend for players and spectators alike. Beers were consumed in abundance, old friendships were renewed and new friendships were made in the warm and friendly atmosphere as the sun came down on another cracking weekend of sport at the Singapore Cricket Club. Rugby truly was the winner.

SCC’s band of happy players

O

ne Night in Bangkok for the 33rd Annual Balut Interport Actually it was three nights. The Interport was scheduled to be held at the Manila Yacht Club over the weekend of 22 to 24 November 2013. With Manila’s strict entrance requirements, most clubs were unable to meet their demands.

Manila requested all names and entrance fees to be paid by 31 May. As many clubs could not meet their criteria, Manila finally withdrew hosting the tournament on 13 July.

The British Club Bangkok took up the mantle and offered to run the event. This very generous offer was quickly taken up by all clubs in the balut fraternity, with the exception of Manila, and dates agreed upon were 29 November to 1 December 2013.

Registration for teams and players started on the Friday evening with a splendid cocktail party on the Club’s spacious front lawn. The British Ambassador, Mark Kent, kindly opened the proceedings, with a Scottish pipe band setting the scene. A total of 112 players were registered for the competition. SCC entered seven teams, 28 players.

Saturday lunch was followed by the start of the competition at 2.00pm. Eight rounds of balut were played finishing at 6.00pm.

The winners of the team prize were the Indian Association, with an amazing total score of 3,309. Not all went their way as Raj Kumar and John Taylor came second in the pairs and Raj took the individual honours. Congratulations. Capt. Raj! On Sunday evening the proceedings culminated with a glorious firework display. Thus the tournament ended with a big bang.

Christmas Party in the Padang Restaurant, Friday 13 December It was a ‘cracker’ of a party. In balut terms, a ‘full house’ with 92 Members and guests attending. Thanks must go to Mogens Andersen in obtaining generous sponsors to help defray the cost, and to Wenling our Sports Executive, for her tremendous administrative skills in arranging everything so well.

SCC’s yearly prizes were presented to: First, Anwar Gaffoor. Anwar has had a tremendous year, also winning the local league with SCC Team 4, and clinching first place in the in-house singles competition.

Second was John Taylor and third, Sunita Kapoor.

For musical entertainment we were royally entertained firstly by Ibrahim and Mansor (K2 Duo) and then by the vivacious singer Amy Bondi. A sumptuous Christmas buffet was enjoyed, and there were many lovely lucky draw prizes. A wonderful evening to close the Balut Section’s year.

T

he Brisbane Tattersalls Snooker Section led by our good friend Tim Woolley visited us on their way to India to play the Bombay Cricket Club.

As usual we hosted them to an excellent afternoon of great competition and good fellowship. Our Convenor, Victor Yeong, fielded a team which included Jason, Victor, Manu, Thin Wah, Mike and Sunil to play against our guests. While the competition was a friendly, the contest was fierce. Some very good display of skills was evident that afternoon. It was a close 5-4 win for the SCC team which made everybody happy. The visitors really enjoyed themselves with our ever generous spread of food and quick flow of beverages.

In 18 January 2014, we will be hosting Penang Club, with whom we have not played for many years. The last time we met was way back in the 1990s, when we visited them. Victor got in touch with them during our recent visit to Penang and both clubs agreed to renew our friendship and Interport Competition.

We are also planning a major tour to New Zealand on 7-16 March 2014 to visit the Northern Club and the Wellington Club. We are still working on the flight details and there is a possibility that Qantas will require us to fly via Brisbane, in which case we may visit the Brisbane Tattersall as well. It all depends on the cost of the flight and timing. More details will be available soon. Robina Ladies Visit to SCC (17 Oct) Eight lovely ladies from the Robina Bowls Club in Queensland made a brief visit to the SCC in late October for a quick game of bowls and were hosted to drinks and snacks at the Deli and the merrymaking predictably went on late into the night.

Inter-Section Netball Carnival (16 Nov) Our bowlers did us proud with a total of 13 bowlers (plus Ganesh’s daughter, Avina) participating as both players and supporters. Although we did not win, we put up a great fight and our formidable presence was noted by all.

National Bowls SCC entered three men’s teams and one ladies team in the National Fours, (20/27 Oct) emerging champions with the team of Melvin, Hui Kai, Prem and Ganesh followed in second place by TQ Lim, Chai HY, KC Chew and Chong Beng.

The team of Mary, Rita, Lew Foong and Lynda Low came in third in the ladies section. In the National Singles League Men 2013 (November) for the National Squad, Christian Huang was the winner with Melvin Tan first runner-up.

Inter-club Triples League 2013 (14 Aug to 6 Nov) However, we bombed out in the inter-club league games played at Kallang, SCC and Tanglin. SCC entered two mixed teams and both were not even placed. Our players seemingly failed to adapt to the long duration of the league and did not display the passion needed to win.

End of Season Event 2013 (14 Dec) The lawn bowls season came to an end on 14 December with a friendly game on the Green followed by much feasting and drinking and singing Christmas carols late into the night. It was planned to be held in the courtyard under the stars but the wet weather did not help. Nonetheless all our Members – about 35 who attended, had good reason to celebrate a great year of bowls and to look forward to yet another great season in 2014.

Bridge Business

B

ridge is being viewed as serious business by its Section Members as training by SCBA (Singapore Contract Bridge Association) has been organised at the Intermediate level for Members to hone, upgrade and learn the nuances of the game to take them to the next level.

Six such sessions have been organised and there have been around 10 participants. The Section Committee also plans to organise classes for beginners extending over two modules and eight sessions in early 2014.

Rangoli and diyas

The Deepavali night held on 4 November was a grand success.

The Oval was transformed with decorations and diyas (traditional lamps) to befit the occasion. A colourful rangoli (a patterned floor design) surrounded by diyas was appreciated by all.

Some of the ladies and a few men in ethnic Indian attire added more colour and gaiety to the occasion. The menu consisting of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes was a treat for the palate.

Special thanks to the SCC administration staff for their excellent support at all levels: helping to organise the event, assisting with the decorations and the taking of photographs.

Both Section Members and guests participated in the games resulting in eight tables consisting of 32 players. In addition we played 24 boards on this special day. Special thanks to Carlton Parker who was our Bridge Director for the evening.

The Section Members enjoyed another session of festive ambience during the Christmas Special on 12 December at the Gilmour Room. The buffet spread, as is the tradition catered to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. There were close to eight tables with both Section Members and guests participating in the games. The next special event is for the Lunar New year which is planned for 14 February 2014 at the Gilmour Room.

A few ladies from the Section did us proud by participating in the Intersection Darts Competition held at the Oval on 3 October. They came in second. Well done, ladies!

In all, 2013 has been an eventful year for the Section. It can look forward to an even more eventful 2014 as the Committee views the business of bridge quite seriously. The game will be played almost every Monday in 2014. The details can be found on the Bridge Section notice board at SCC.

Interport SCC was hosted by the Royal Selangor Club for the traditional Interport games. In the social game for the John Ewing Trophy, SCC restricted RSC to 137 to a rain curtailed 20 overs with Nick Power taking three wickets. SCC began the chase well before rain stopped play.

CA League We had our strongest season in recent history.

The Lions won the most games in the first division but missed the premiership by two points. Cougars won second division again with Tigers finishing third. Cougars unfortunately had their play-off match for promotion rained off.

Cheetahs won a hard-fought Division 3 with Panthers finishing strongly in fourth place. After leading the fourth division for a good part of the season, the Jaguars finished third and similarly Pumas with a fighting performance and leading the division early in the season finished fifth. The Jaguars and Pumas introduced several JSMs to the league with many moving up the divisions and making their mark.

Lion – Kangaroo Cup

T

his annual fixture between the Singapore Cricket Club and the Australian High Commission was set for 31 October and only much later did we realise that it coincided with the ancient Celtic festival of Halloween as well. So it had predictably to be a Halloween theme for the night, cum Lion-Kangaroo Cup. The event turned out to be one of the most memorable nights for both the teams as our members took pains to be dressed up for Halloween.

A strong turnout of darters of about 40 from both sides gathered at The Oval that evening. AHC staff was pleasantly surprised to hear of the long history between AHC and SCC and the darts matches between us over the years. After dinner, the competition (six singles and three doubles) began. Both teams were well matched and the final score for singles was SCC-8 to AHC-3, and doubles was won by SCC-3 to AHC-0.

It was a very social evening enjoyed by all. AHC and SCC will endeavour to continue this fixture and we look forward to our visit to AHC next year.

I would like to thank our President Colonel Guru, Chairman Games Control Board Mr Baljit Singh, and GM Nigel Stearns for their immense support to the Darts Section. My specials thanks to the F&B team and Angeline for making so much effort in ensuring the food was themed to coincide with the event. Thank you also to Section darters Les Jewitt, Genevieve Chase, Sheela, Charles, Gavin Latto, Soma, Yasmin, Mohan, Balagopal and Ceara, who made all the effort in clinching the title.

ineteen Section Members made the trip to Kuala Lumpur to participate in the Royal Selangor Club (RSC) versus Singapore Cricket Club at an Interport golf game held at Kota Permai Golf & CC on Friday 22 November 2013. Dato’ Haris and his team triumphantly secured first victory by beating the SCC team. Even our warm up game at KLGCC the day before was not good to match RSC team.

RSC’s best score came from Tranjit Singh (Handicap 18) with 41 points, while James Kiong’s (Handicap 20) at 35 points led the scoreboard for Team SCC. James is new to SCC and the Golf Section and we warmly welcome him! Captain, Peter Salt suspected Bernard Chia was to blame, having arranged a sumptuous dinner accompanied by free flow of drinks on the eve of the tournament. Regardless, we wish to thank Bernard for contributing a fine selection of beverages.

Overall, the trip was extremely enjoyable and the golfing results were expected, especially teeing off from the blue tee box. Friendships were forged and the company was fantastic. Even Treasurer, Gerald Mah enjoyed himself immensely. Hong Tee is one who never misses a good gathering and a special thank you to him for flying in to enjoy the night’s festivities!

up the remaining beverages on board the coach. We had a simple lunch in Johor Bahru before arriving in SCC in the late afternoon. Peter, a sincere thank you for the 1.5L of specially blended Chivas 12 years, which we proudly managed to finish before the KLGCC game.

On a side note, the SCC Golf Section wishes to thank Mr Ng Siow How for providing 30 dozen Callaway golf balls as prizes for our Annual Golf Tournament and for the RSC Game.

Finally, we will be organising a Chinese New Year Golf Game and Dinner at the Orchid Country Club on Tuesday, 11 February 2014. We hope to attract about 100 golfing Members to participate. Dinner will follow after the afternoon golf game at OCC. Details will be circulated to soon.

O

n 18 October, 11 lovely ladies from the Netball Section arrived in Bali to take part in the annual Bali Flames Netball Carnival. We were up bright and early the next morning, even though most of us were sleep-deprived from the late arrival the previous night. Regardless, we took to the court with great fervour and worked very well as a team to overcome all the obstacles faced.

Through sheer grit and tenacity, we managed to withstand tough challenges posed to us by the 10 other teams that came from Bali, Perth, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore. The carnival was played in a round robin format with each game lasting 12 minutes. Initially, some of us found it a challenge to play on grass courts instead of the concrete court surface that we are used to. However, we soon realized that our real enemy was in fact the incessant and merciless Bali heat that effectively sucked the energy out of us.

Finally, after six hours of games and constantly smothering sun cream onto our sun-kissed skins, our hard work and perseverance paid off and we placed a respectable joint fourth out of the 11 teams – kudos to Anna, Helen, Katy, Erin, Gen, Davina, Emma, Kyesha, Nan, Jacq Ann and Munch.

Back in Singapore, we sent two teams – Hawks and Eagles, to participate in the Katana Year End League. The Hawks had a

difficult time playing in Division One, but ended with two wins from five. The Eagles consisted of the Junior Sports Members, many of whom just joined SCC. Despite the fact that this was a relatively new team, we managed to acquire the dynamics of the team quickly and made substantial progress with each game that we played.

It came down to the wire as we went against the POLITE Champions, Singapore Polytechnic, for our last match to determine whether we came in first or second. Despite losing the first three quarters, we stayed strong and never once gave up. Eventually, we emerged victorious by successfully overcoming their speed and youthful vitality with humble teamwork and experience. Overall, it was a brilliant first season for us, however, there is still much to work on and we will come back next season even stronger!

On 18 November we held the Netball Inter-section Tournament, which was a great day – we are very grateful to the other Sections that came along to play and support, particularly the Bowls Section who came en masse and the Darts Section that took the final against the Netball girls to the wire.

Before the Inter-section, we also held the very first JSM Carnival with teams from several local schools participating.

The weather did not do us any favours – but it was a very successful event!

Do remember to look out for many upcoming events from the Netball Section, including the new lunch time City League and the annual SCC Friendly League that kicks off in February 2014!

Everything Rugby…

T

he SRU season is well underway with the SCC fielding four teams this year, a change from the previous two where the SCC had fielded two teams in the Premiership division. After the first three rounds the Prems, led by Simon ‘Etho’ Etheridge were sitting on one of each (WDL) in the premiership division, the Tankards led by Big Sam Sharpe with 1L & 2Ws and the young Lions and matured Growlers led by Elliot Smith and Marc Leaver duelling it out in the Conference with 3Ws prior to the break for the 66th SCC 7s.

Renowned as one of the best club rugby tournaments in the world, this year’s SCC 7s did not disappoint with some great display of talent on and off the paddock. Last year’s winners Devata were unable to rekindle their former glory of 2011 and 2012 being knocked out in the Cup quarter finals, and the Asia Pacific Dragons winning the Ablitt Cup with a comfortable victory over 2010 winners, the Penguins. The Section would like to thank all the sponsors, spectators, players and volunteers for making 2013 another very successful year.

The following weekend, Singapore rugby put aside club rivalries and joined together at the Padang for the 11th Bali

Memorial – North vs South matches. The North, led by Peter ‘Potato, Potato, Potato’ McFeely reversed the last few years of losses by inflicting a crushing defeat over the South in the main game and the Northern Vets doing similar the early game.

The season then restarted and teams played through to the Ready for battle Christmas break, with the Prems sitting top of the table, hoping for other results to hold on for the league title. The Tankards are sitting very pretty on top of the table with two games to go and looking like clear winners, the Lions and Growlers finishing first and second respectively in the conference with several games to go and the interclub showdown on the 25 January shaping up to be a very juicy decider.

During this period the Club also bid a fond farewell to long serving premier coach and player, Chris ‘Bronco’ Bracey to Taipei and John-Louis ‘Free Willy’ Judges to London.

The Thirds

A

s the New Year is upon us, let’s reflect on the Thirds team for 2013.

This time we are a little saddened as we bid farewell to two of our team Members, Howard Grout and Bobby Heerasing, who will be leaving us for the land down under, Australia. Both Bobby and Howard have made valuable contributions to the team, on and off the field. Howard has come into his element this year, having scored several goals. And Bobby who has been consistently giving everything when he plays especially his marauding runs down the right.

You both will be missed and we hope that you come back, if not come and visit us when you can to kick a ball around and have a few drinks.

On a brighter side, we welcome Jeroen Goldman and Sherwin Lin who joined us earlier this season. We would also like to welcome back Dan Majanovic and Mark Celenk who have returned to Singapore and to the Thirds after being away for several years.

The season started off with games being played on the Cricket Club’s hallowed ground, the Padang and then ended with games played at the Dempsey grounds, due to various events being held on the Padang. The Dempsey grounds have been a blessing as games can be played all year round regardless.

This year we celebrated our very own ‘Minister Mentor’ K. Balachandran, ‘Super Star’ Lawyer, Hamidul Haq and Chief Operating Officer, Jayaprakash’s birthdays with ‘The Decades Tour’, to Jakarta to play against a team selected by Aziz at the Anglo-Chinese School’s football field. was called was to celebrate; each of the birthday boys celebrated their 60th, 50th and 40th respectively.

This year, we also celebrated the ‘Wedding of the Year’ of our very own Aman Bajaj. The celebrations were held in Hua Hin, Thailand. It was a fun-filled weekend of celebrations and will be remembered fondly. In fact, it was one of the most funfilled and colourful weddings that anyone who attended will attest to. In essence, it was a Bollywood wedding.

Congratulations are also in order for new Thirds Member, Sherwin Lin who will have celebrated his wedding on 30 November. And of course Members of the Thirds will be in attendance. Congratulations go out to both Aman and Sherwin once again.

This year also sees outgoing Thirds Captain, Tahlil Khan handing the rein over to vice-captain and incoming Captain, Aman Bajaj. Aman has appointed our Vincent Lawrence as his Vice-captain.

We want to thank outgoing Captain Tahlil for his dedication, contributions and hard work these past two years. As with any captain he fought hard on and off the field for the Thirds. Aman has retained the same backroom committee that forms the backbone of the Thirds with Prakash as Treasurer and Ashish Manchharam taking over the enviable task of Fixtures Secretary from Joseph Sagaram who did a fantastic job over the last two years.

The Thirds Team was fortunate enough to have been able to hang a team photograph in The Men’s Bar, an honour that is a first in Thirds Team history. It is a testament to the contributions made by the Thirds and its Members, though many would rather remain anonymous. I would like to make a special mention though of Rodd Harrison who put in a Herculean task with regards to ‘assembling’ the photo.

Here’s to a great year and we look forward to a wonderful 2014.

our to Perth, 25-27 October A group of 10 SCC players played two friendly matches in a recent tour to Perth.

The first match was at the Terrace Club, home of West Australian Squash. A number of good matches followed with SCC coming out winners. The courts at the Terrace Club were SGD 36 per hour but our hosts made the SCC players feel very welcomed. Thanks to Geoff Davenport for making the match possible and an SCC plaque now adorns the Terrace Club walls.

The second day of the Perth Tour began with a full English breakfast feast in Cottesloe, on the beach with wonderful views overlooking the Indian Ocean. This was followed up by a long stroll along the beach before returning to Perth CBD to prepare for our second match versus the Subiaco Kings. A close match all the way until Subiaco won the last two matches to win the overall tie 6-4 as the long walk on the beach finally took its toll on tired legs.

The final day of the tour was spent on a river cruise and wine tasting. Thanks to Peter Rogers for overseeing the ground arrangements. A great tour was had by all.

There was balloon sculpture so all the kids went away with their favourite cartoon characters. Food and drinks were provided and all the kids were presented with a nice t-shirt kindly sponsored by Udai Singh, our former Men’s Captain.

As with the kids, many of the parents were happy with the event and were keen to know the Section’s future plans on junior coaching. Given the strong response, we hope to be able to arrange with the Club on the junior academy soon.

I would really like to thank Anna Trybocka who initiated the idea and undertook the large part of the planning and arrangements for the Family Day. Also a big thank you to Francis Gomez for running the kids through the warm-up routines and Devi Hogkinson for assisting with the F&B. Friendly with Hong Kong Football Club, 30 November After a long hiatus, we hosted a team from HKFC. With a ‘best of 3’ match format, a total of about 20 matches were played with each player managing to get in between two to three matches through the course of the afternoon.

With HKFC bringing a few of their top players, some of the matches were a joy to watch with amazingly long and fast rallies. The matches were competitive but played in good spirit.

Everyone had an exhausting but enjoyable afternoon of squash and all were ready for the drinks and food. We adjourned to Stumps for drinks and dinner after the matches. As we are already acquainted with many of the HKFC players, it was nice to have the time to catch up. All in all, it was a great afternoon of squash followed by an evening of good fun. We look forward to visiting HK next year and hope to host HKFC again in the not too distant future.

Family Day, 23 November Our first ever, the Family Day was a huge success. With the Section hoping to set up a junior academy to provide coaching for young kids, the success of the Family Day was a good gauge of the level of interest.

A total of about 20 kids from as young as 5 years old turned up on Saturday morning for the coaching sessions. They were provided with name badges and warm up routines on the multi-purpose court before they went on court. The kids were separated into groups with two coaches on hand to guide them through some basic routines using mini-rackets and bigger, January / February 2014

Looking Back at 2013

013 Inter-club Doubles League (Sep – Nov) The Ladies’ A team as well as the Men’s A, B and C teams took part in the season-ending Inter-club Doubles League. The series of matches put the SCC teams’ skills and resilience to the test. Players found themselves stretched and tested to the max (and regretting having that extra pint of beer the weekend before!), playing against former ATP and WTA players, national champions and junior players.

Despite a number of heroic battles on court and close encounters, it was the Ladies’ A team who brought home some silverware after emerging as runners-up in their category. Over several weeks of competition, the Men’s and Ladies’ teams played against clubs like SANWA, NUSS, Filipino Tennis Club, Singapore Swimming Club, Keppel Club and the likes.

Thank you to all those who played, sweating out on Sunday mornings and Saturday afternoons, rain or shine. May 2014 bring us stronger serves, piercing volleys and powerful winning shots!

Christmas Tennis Party If you saw some of Santa’s little helpers prancing around the tennis courts on 22 November, don’t worry, your eyes were not playing tricks on you! That was all part of the pre-Christmas festivities.

The Friday social was transformed into a Christmas party with tinsels and ornaments. After the tennis, players and Section Members who signed up for the Christmas dinner were treated to a nice spread of food – turkey, couscous salad and mince pies. Thank you to Fiona Pilling who led in the planning and arrangement of the party.

Ex-SCC Tennis Man to Run for US Congress Remember him (left)?

That’s Bruce Von Cannon, a familiar face at the Club, who was also the Tennis Convenor and a GC Member, among other positions. This former US state champion and prominent banker is now planning to run for US Congress. Von Cannon is seeking to be the next Congressman for North Carolina’s Sixth District. He will be running in the Republican primary, which takes place in May 2014.
