CLUB NEWS

Dear Members,

At the point of writing this message, the Club is in the midst of the final stages of organising the 20th SCC International Hockey 6s Tournament to be held on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd March at the Padang. With 60 teams from Asia and around the region participating, I am sure it is going to be another fantastic weekend of top class hockey, fierce competition and a wonderful social gathering of the hockey fraternity as a whole. I would also like to note that in conjunction with the Chinese New Year, the SCC Administration Office was re-opened on 7 February after several weeks of renovation. The new layout of the administration office includes new carpeting, a corridor of built-in cabinets and a more organised filing system. In addition, the cubicles are now arranged in an open concept for easier communication amongst staff.

Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh President Singapore Cricket Club

Events & Promotions In March and April, make a date at the Padang Restaurant as the Club will host an array of delightful events. For our fabulous ladies, take some time off on Saturday, 8 March for a special dinner in honour of International Women’s Day with special guest speakers. For the little ones, be sure to join us on Sunday, 20 April for an ‘egg-citing’ and ‘bunny-tastic’ brunch in celebration of Easter Day. For further details on these events and other F&B promotions, turn to pages 17 to 28. The Annual Staff Party will be held on Saturday, 12 April for our well-deserved staff who have worked tirelessly to serve the Members with their ‘Service Beyond a Smile’. Do note that for this special day, the Club will be closed from 4.00pm onwards and resume normal operations the following day. The General Committee and I thank all Members for their kind understanding. In a blink of an eye, a year has almost passed since the last Annual General Meeting. The General Committee and I have had the honour of working together with you, the Members, to improve all aspects of the Club, particularly our finances, Club operations, our sporting performances and our Club social activities in keeping with the tradition and level of prestige the Club has come to be known for the last 162 years. I strongly encourage all eligible Members to attend and participate in the upcoming Annual General Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 22 April at 6.30pm at the Padang Restaurant and help elect your new General Committee for 2014/15. Do visit the Club website at www.scc.org.sg to familiarise yourself with the Club Rules on the election process, particularly ‘Rule 27 – Voting Rights and Privileges’ and ‘Rule 58 – Quorum and Procedure at General Meetings’. The Sports Awards Night will be held on Saturday, 9 May to honour and recognise not only those with great sporting achievements but also those who have actively contributed to the Club and their respective Sports Section. Members are invited to be part of this extravaganza by nominating your best Sportsperson. More details are available on page 29. There are several awards to be given out that night, the most prestigious being the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’. In closing, I would like to personally thank my fellow colleagues on the General Committee for their dedication, passion and time in serving the membership for the past year and the Management for their dedication and hard work. At the same time, I would like to welcome the incoming General Committee, which takes over after the 22nd April AGM. Let us all join in and work with the incoming General Committee to help enhance our status as the Premier Sports and Social Club in the region.

See you at the Club!

Sports Honour Award January 2014 t the New Members Night on 13 January 2014, Marc A Lansonneur, Chairman of the 66th SCC International Rugby 7s Organising Committee 2013, received the Games Control Board ‘Sports Honor Award’ from President, Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh and Chairman, Games Control Board Mr Sher Baljit Singh in the presence of the General Committee Members, new Members and their Proposers and Seconders. This award is in recognition of Marc’s contributions to the Club in organising a successful SCC 7s tournament in 2013.

Marc and his new Committee took over the project in June 2013, and within five months, they managed to deliver a high quality event, with top rugby games, and an overall excellent feedback from sponsors, teams, SCC Members and the general public. The tournament was well covered by major local media channels through press articles, radio coverages and a special TV footage broadcasted on Setanta and Rugby Asian Channel. The SCC 7s Organising Committee is formed by a group of active Rugby Section Members, coaches and players. Organising such a big tournament to perpetuate the SCC 7s tradition has

been an honour and a tremendous experience, with highs and lows, doubts and passion, and eventually a fully rewarding journey. This achievement was made possible with the tremendous support from sponsors, the General Committe and Games Control Board, passionate involvement of the Rugby Section volunteers and last but not least, true team work with the Club Managment. At the point of writing, Marc and his Committee Members have already started working to meet the challenges of organising an ever better SCC 7s tournament in 2014.

Congratulations, Marc!

Dialogue Session 20 January 2014 he President, Col. (Retd.) Gurcharan Singh was pleased to TCommittee ‘chair’ a ‘Dialogue Session’ with 76 Members, the General and Senior Club Management on Monday, 20 January

2014 at the Padang Restaurant. The occasion of the ‘Session’ afforded the opportunity to the Membership Task Force, led by Messrs. Michael A. Grice (Chairman) and Jonathan M E Robinson (Rules and Membership Sub-committee Chairman), as well as to the Development Task Force, led by Messrs. Grice (Chairman) and assisted by Suresh Shankar (Member), to formally present for the collective view of SCC Members - “Options for Change” – and to subsequently obtain comment, opinion and feedback from those in attendance in their consideration of the longer term strategic planning of the Club.

Members responded positively to the two excellent presentations, making several comments and further suggestions on what they had seen and heard presented by the speakers, and in doing so provided a sound platform for both Task Forces to move towards the next stage of their respective projects. The Members were also addressed by the Finance Member, Mr. Hamish Christie, who presented and critiqued the unaudited financial statements for the 2013 fiscal year in addition to the forecast for 2014 with the primary objective of garnering Members’ views as to the financial health of the Club and especially in relation to Rule 45 (b) – Subscriptions.

1st Staff Inter-Club Bowling 2014 16 January 2014 ith an aim to ‘Kick Start a Healthy Lifestyle’ amongst the W SCC Employees, the SCC embarked on a new initiative – Workplace Health Promotion Programme, under the Health Promotion Board. A series of physical activities such as bowling sessions were organised for all employees to spur staff involvement in sports and foster friendship as well as promote healthy lifestyle amongst the team members.

After six bowling sessions, a team of five outstanding bowlers from SCC were selected to represent the Club in the 1st Staff Inter-Club Bowling Competition, held on 16 January 2014 at the Singapore Swimming Club. They were: Mohd Alias, Kassim Maideen, Choong Wenling, Khairull Anuar, and Suzie Chan, forming the SCC ‘Fabulous Five’ Bowling Team. In a short span of time, the ‘Fabulous Five’ trained hard for the competition. Coming from different departments and working on different shifts, getting together to train involved a lot of sacrifice, co-ordination and support from the HODs. On the event day, the Establishment Subcommittee Member, Captain Vejasvaran Renganathan and the SCC HR Team were present to support the ‘Fabulous Five’. Despite putting up a good performance, the SCC Team did not manage to secure a place in the top three. However, they had a great time of bonding, cheering for each other and displayed good sportsmanship. The next Staff Inter-Club Bowling Competition will be held next year at the Orchid Country Club. At the point of writing, the SCC Team has already started practicing in order to achieve a better performance next year. Kudos to the SCC ‘Fabulous Five’ Bowling Team!

A B McPherson SCC President, 1969 – 1972 n 24 December 2013, we were saddened with the news of the passing of former O SCC President, Alistair Brian McPherson. A B McPherson took over as President of the SCC from D R Reid in 1969. It has been noted that if there is one President in the history of the SCC who has contributed to the present greatness and glory of the Club, it must be A B McPherson.

In 1969, he changed the old, and in some ways derelict club, to its present day elegant social and great sporting club. As Alistair bluntly put it in the SCC History Book written by Ilsa Sharp (page 164), “You would sit at the bar and get your bottom bitten by the worms coming out of the bar seats.” – that was good enough reason for renovations of the old club. Alistair and the committee worked feverishly to renovate and rebuild the club from 1969 till its completion in 1972. Alistair was a very generous person and never had a bad word for anyone. He loved the SCC as much as he loved his wife Kathy and their two children, Fiona and Bruce.

May he rest in peace. Three decades of Presidents – seen in 1985, enjoying a drink on the Club rooftop (now known as Stumps Terrace), with the Supreme Court (left) and City Hall government offices behind them. Visit the SCC Reference Library The SCC Reference Library, located in the Men’s Bar, is open to all Members free of charge. It has copies of every SCC Annual Report since 1970, when the Club produced its first printed Annual Report. It also includes copies of The Padang magazine (and its predecessor The SCC Magazine) from the 1980s onwards; Wisden’s Almanack, the indispensable reference of cricket; and books of interest to sportsmen and women. Finally, the library has books on some of our reciprocal clubs, which members may like to browse before they visit. The library is a work in progress, and members are invited to donate their own sports books.

Obituary The Club records, with deep regret, the passing of our Member:

Mr Lee Tek Seng Our sincere condolences to the family of the departed.

Club Operating Hours on 12 April 2014 Please note due to the Annual Staff Party on Saturday, 12 April 2014, the Club will be closed from 4.00pm onwards. Normal operations will resume from Sunday 13 April.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Visit to Singapore CC had just arrived in Singapore, following a triangular M tournament in Kuala Lumpur with the Singapore and Malaysia national teams. MCC were playing SCC 1st XI at the

Padang, but with the publication deadline, will only be able to report on the match in the next edition. The MCC tour party was managed by Bob Baxter, and captained by ex-Lancashire skipper, Mark Chilton.

Cricket Section With no cricket being played over the past few months, the most notable event in the Cricket Section calendar was the visit of MCC. At press time, our internal Commonwealth Cup was also being played, with results to appear in the next edition of the Padang.

Hours after MCC’s arrival in Singapore, we hosted them in a welcome cocktail in the Gilmour Room. We were fortunate to have many notable guests attend the function. These included: the British High Commissioner, H.E. Antony Phillipson, MCC Committee Member, Robert Griffiths, Singapore Cricket Association President, Imran Khawaja and SCA Honorary Life Member, Harbans Singh. We very much appreciated the attendance of the SCC General Committee, including President, Colonel Gucharan Singh who addressed the audience.

MAP: COLLECTION OF SINGAPORE LAND AUTHORITY, COURTESY OF NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF SINGAPORE

A Pavilion on the Padang Article by: Steve Thompson his map of Singapore town dated 1881 shows a “pavilion” on the Tsecond Esplanade, as the Padang was known then. The pavilion was in fact the Clubhouse of the Singapore Cricket Club, built in 1877 and replaced by the third Clubhouse in 1884. It is shown above in one of only two photographs that are known to exist.

The first SCC Clubhouse was built in the late 1860s and was probably little more than a shack. Before that, there was a tent where Members gathered for refreshments after their games on the Padang. In 1881, the SCC had about 150 Members, compared to 6,000 active Members today. In the early days, the Padang was less than 70m wide, until it was widened by land reclamation in 1890. 16

JUNIOR SPORTS MEMBERS Bowls Section Scribe: K U Menon | Convenor: Prem Anand

L

awn Bowls reportedly traces its origins from Egypt, circa 5000BC and was popular in 13th century Britain. Despite its illustrious origins however, the game suffers from an “image” problem – seen as a genteel game, the preserve of grey-haired foggies in starched whites, ambling on a wellmanicured Green in the blistering midday sun. But what is less known is that, it is very much a game for the young and world bowls champions are more often than not, between 20 and 40 years of age. In a bid to change the demographics, the Bowls Section has tried earnestly to attract Junior Sports Members (JSM) through “bowls coaching” events, inviting Singapore Sports School for an afternoon of bowls and liaising with Junior College teachers, but with little success. The earlier initiative came primarily through veteran bowler Mary Lim, then on the teaching staff of Catholic Junior College, who promoted Lawn Bowls as an extra curricular activity in the College. From this cohort, Mary picked a number of young CJC bowlers and recommended them for selection as JSMs at SCC. Over the years with diligent coaching by Mary and other senior bowlers, our JSMs were exposed to National and International level matches. The list included Chng Ming Li, Edmund Lin, Loh Hui Shan, Shermeen Lim, Christian Huang, Melvin Tan and Wong Hui Kai. All, except for Shermeen are now full members (Ordinary Non-Transferable Membership) of SCC. At various times, some have also served in the Section Committee. Christian Huang represented Singapore at the World Singles Championships for Men in Cyprus in 2012, and was SCC Sportsman of the Year. We currently have two JSMs and Shermeen is our most accomplished young JSM. An NUS graduate, she currently helps her dad with his business, importing and exporting paperrelated products worldwide. Her dad’s support has been critical to her success in the sport. Shermeen sums it up in her own words: “I started bowling in 2006 in Catholic Junior College, as a CCA - at that time, Mary Lim was our coach and she taught us the basics. We spent time training and learning with the Chais and the Lims, very experienced ex-national bowlers and that sparked my interest in competitive bowls and I never looked back since.

The Bowls Singapore Bowler of theYear 2011 Photo credit : Mathew Ngui

Playing bowls opened up a whole new world of excitement and possibilities. I get excited just talking about it. We had a small but close team of juniors from SCC at that time. We were part of the Singapore contingent in the Asean University Games (AUG) in KL in 2008 where Ming Li was my skip in the pairs and triples. We were overjoyed when we clinched golds in both! It spurred my interest on to the international arena, in 2010 when I played in the World Junior Cup for the first time in Warilla, Australia. It was a truly enriching experience with the variety of players and styles and the determination everyone displayed. I finished with a bronze. This mini milestone brought me the prestigious awards: Bowler of the Year (female) in Bowls Singapore, Sports Woman of the Year at SCC and Meritorious Award (Individual) by the Singapore National Olympic Council. My next quest was playing in the Champion of Champions in 2011 in Hong Kong, which is by far the most competitive tournament I have ever participated in. Everyone is a National Singles champion and we come together to play for the champion of them all. The level of skills and tenacity in these world class players were of the highest order and it was exciting to be a part of it. I managed to finish off third in my group (out of two groups) and lost in the playoffs for the semi- finals to end off top six in the tournament. I am grateful to be a part of the bowling community and thankful for what bowls has taught me. It’s a game of precision, strategy, skill and tenacity. The ability to perform under pressure, the confidence to bowl that last bowl and make the difference, it is that excitement and thrill that keeps me in the game. It is a sport for the young and old, never too late to learn and a constant learning experience for even the most experienced players. It is truly dynamic and I would encourage everyone to give it a try.” And I could not possibly say it better.

alling all runners, and those who are keen to give it a try! At the end of last year, the Singapore Cricket Club launched the SCC Runners - a social running group, open to all Members of SCC (whether sporty or not!) with the aim of giving Members the chance to meet fellow runners, enjoy a social jog after work and a great excuse to make the most of our fantastic F&B facilities at the end of it all. If you’re interested, why not come along on a Thursday night and see for yourself - we meet at 6.30pm at the Courtyard and run approximately 5km with everyone going at their own pace - its not a race! The plan is to offer a choice of distances and routes each week as the group grows to cater for everyone’s needs and preferences. To add another element to the group we have just bought our first batch of SCC Runners kit (available upon order with the SCC Sports Department at $35) which includes a running vest and shorts. Whether a regular of the group or not, this is an item for everyone to buy. Great for training and standing out from the crowd.

Who knows, maybe this time next year we will have a team sponsor and be planning some overseas trips to widen our running options! The road is long and we’d love to have you join the journey.

BALUT

Scribe & Convenor: John Lewis Taylor

T

he Section has accepted the onerous, yet prestigious task of running the 34th Chivas Regal STC Interport. The Indian Association requested that SCC host this year as they hosted the event in 2011, and that SCC extend the hosting in 2012 to the Kinabalu Yacht Club to coincide with their 60th Club’s Anniversary. Also in the 33 years that the Annual Interport has been organised, SCC has only held the event twice, in 1984 and 2002. Confirmed dates for the event are Friday 5th & Saturday 6th December. We shall endeavour to uphold the high tradition, hospitality of the Balut fraternity, especially following on from the British Club Bangkok who took up the mantle late last year after the withdrawal of Manila. We have a very full programme for the year. Usually our meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month, but this year, due to events and programming, there are many months that are not so. Please refer to the Balut Section noticeboard for details. Notices will be sent out each month highlighting that month’s events. At the January meeting we had 42 players, with Yasmin Gaffoor claiming top honours with a score of 648, at an average of 108, just piping Jag Singh who scored 645. Apparently the charming Yasmin is trying to fill Anwar’s shoes, with Anwar this time in 20th place, after his phenomenal season last year. It’s interesting

to note that our very own captain Raj Kumar, who is responsible for selecting teams, held up the column by coming last with a score of 457, average 76.16. No doubt he is pleased that the first league match of the 2014 session is not until Wednesday 21 May at SRC, so plenty of time for Raj to regain his form. February’s meeting was brought forward to the first Tuesday of the month to coincide with the CNY. Jenna Sendall collected the first prize with a score of 659, at an average of 109.83 and Angeline Justesen took the booby prize with a total score of 505, average 81.16. Our first tour of 2014 is to The Kinabalu Club, Kota Kinabalu over the weekend of 7 & 8 March to attend their 4th Invitational Balut Competition. We are sending a high powered delegation with the President Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh and the Deputy President Michael Grice in the touring party. Our next monthly in-house meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 18 March. Several Members have requested an occasional game on a Saturday afternoon. To this aim, Mogens Andersen is in the process of organising a lunch and a game at the Danish Seamen’s Mission at No. 10 Pender Road on Saturday 12 April.

Annual Interport Game

W

e hosted Penang Club (PC) for an Interport game on 18 January 2014. This Annual Interport has been missing for more than 10 years. Indeed, it was only last year when we went to the Penang Sports Club for the Interclub Tournament, that with the help of our good brother Khun Vee from the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Timothy Lim, then Convenor of Snooker in Penang Club and the brothers from Penang Sports Club, that we were able to finalize and revitalize our Interport Annual game.

The team was led by Raymond Lee (Convenor) together with Timothy Lim (Committee Member of PC), Allan Lee, Jonathon Chan, Kevin Wong, Eugene Goh and Steven Tan. They made their presence felt in the Club and we had a friendly but competitive game and we eventually emerged champions with a score of 9-4. We hosted the dinner at the terrace and it was a most enjoyable evening with a lot of catching up and exchanging of jokes but more importantly, we shared the same interest in drinking. We look forward to visit them next year to continue this friendship and hopefully it will last for a long time. At the point of writing, our Annual Chinese New Year Celebration is schduled to be held on 12 February 2014 from 6.00pm and we are hopeful that all Section Members will be able to grace this occasion with us. We have had to postpone our New Zealand Snooker Tour due to last minute withdrawals and we will organise it again at a later date and will keep everyone posted on the details. 34

On a separate note, it is with great regret the sudden lost of a dear friend, brother and buddy, Patrick Keh from Royal Selangor Club on 8 February 2014. Patrick had always taken good care of us not only in Kuala Lumpur but Penang as well. He was our link person for us to do anything in Malaysia. I like to echo what Joe Smith from RBSC had said, “Kuala Lumpur will never be the same for us when Patrick is not around. I want to express my deep appreciation for all he has done and he will be dearly missed by all of us here. May he rest in eternal peace with the Lord and let us all pray for him.

Bowls or Bust?

T

he New Year began with the promise of good things to come. Two of our veteran bowlers were anointed with high honours by Bowls Singapore. Mary Lim was voted Women Bowler of the Year and George Abraham conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2013.

Whose lifetime……I have just begun!

About time surely ?

Annual General Meeting (AGM) In stark contrast to previous years, the gathering of bowlers at the AGM at Gilmour Room on 25 January, was not buffeted by howling winds or thunderous rain and saw a healthy turnout of some 60 Members. Several Members of the GC headed by Michael Grice, Sher Baljit Singh, George Abraham, Ravi Chandran and Cynthia Robless also graced the occasion and helped to hand out the awards. Some spirited questions and issues were raised, followed by the election of the Bowls Section Committee. Captain Retna, Anwar Gaffoor and Dr K U Menon stepped down and the new Members elected to the 2014 committee included Derek and Melvin. Winners of Lawn Bowls Tournaments 2013 And so it came to pass. The winners received their just rewards, the losers were ignominiously dismissed, Members celebrated the beginning of a new bowling year and the food and drinks and music flowed late into the night. As always, the generous support of our sponsors and especially Rajan Menon Esq of Pernod Ricard ensured an abundant supply of excellent wine and whisky.

Bridge Focus

T

he focus of the Bridge Section, as envisaged by the Committee Members, will be on enhancing its image to that of a sports section. Towards this end, a two-pronged approach has been planned. One for training and another for playing socially and competitively are being considered.

To a galloping 2014!

To begin with, entry level training for both new and existing Members has been planned with a view to attracting new Members and for existing Members to further hone their skills. Beginner’s classes commenced on 11 February 2014 and run for four successive Tuesdays. A follow on series of classes will take place later. The cost for this is $120 for Members and $150 for non-Members with the amount to be paid upfront.

Lo Hei

To increase practice sessions and to raise standards for competitive play, more opportunities for social games with local Bridge organisations will be pursued. Members from clubs will be invited for social games at SCC. For a start, we are in the process of arranging a friendly game with Geylang West Bridge Club (Singapore) in the month of March/April at SCC. Royal Selangor Club has also been approached to enquire about the possibility of an overseas trip to participate in the Inter-club Bridge Friendly. Members interested to play at competitions will be identified and special training will be provided. All this is being done to raise the standards and to enable our Members to confidently participate in competitive play. Plans are also under way to contact SCBA for participation in the Bridge Director’s Course in order for two Committee Members to attend. The Section is fairly new but it is slowly and steadily trying to enhance its profile. For a start this year, at the point of writing, two Section Members will be participating in the SCBA Corporate Pairs Event on 22 February. 36

o end the year on a good note, Darts Section hosted its Year End Party on 7 December 2013, to provide an opportunity for all our Section Members and guests to wind down, have some fun and end the year with loads of good memories. This year, the theme of the event was ‘Wild Wild West’! It was well supported by our Section Members and everyone took pains to dress up for the occasion. The judges had a tough time in the selection of the Best Dressed individuals.

Hockey Gallops Along into the New Year

T

he year ended on a high with the Annual Hockey Dinner which was themed in ‘Black and White’ and filled with style, class and plenty of jovial behaviour (the giant cheque-funnel and marshmallows providing plenty post-dinner entertainment!). It is only right that we reflect on our stand out performers for 2013 and worthy winners of the now legendary ‘Golden Balls’. As we welcome the Year of the Horse, it is the perfect time to officially welcome our new convenor of the Hockey Section, Mr Krishnasamy Rajaram. Here are some interesting facts on the man at the helm: • An established FIH/AHF Technical Official who has served as Technical Official, Judge or Umpire’s Manager at several international hockey events. • He began his hockey at PSA and Civil Service Clubs. • He was a Chief Marshal at the SCC Hockey 6s and has run various tournaments and teams over the years. • He has served in the Singapore Hockey Federation (SHF) Committee. While serving as Hon Secretary, the national men’s team rose from a world ranking of 38 to 32. Rajaram has been described by others in the Section as: • An active man but not arrogant. • Humble but does not hide from responsibility. • Disciplined but not a dictator. • A gentleman and a gentle man.

Rajaram said, “I am honoured to be given the opportunity to be the Convenor but I know it is a tall order to live up to the standards set by Mathavan Devadas but I want to learn and will do my best. I hope I can deliver good outcomes for the Section.” We are sure you will Rajaram and we will support you all the way!

And now for some wise words from our coach, Kanan on the latest happenings in the Section. (Thanks to Kanan for your fantastic blog and contribution to this article and a big congratulations for his participation in Thaipusam this year! If you can do that, you can achieve anything with us hockey players!) Attendance at trainings soar as SCC prepare to lay siege on league titles. Kanan: “I am heartened by the fact that so many people turn up for training, emailed me their unavailability and change of plans, just so they can be there. I am impressed with the start we have made this season. Nonetheless, this is the easy least we can do part. The hard work lies in working on the system of play we are trying to formulate, play and execute during the league season. We are getting there but there is still a lot of work to do.” Kanan feels the strength and outcome of our vast number of teams this year will lie in the leadership and support of the team captains and vice-captains. Congratulations to those selected to take these roles for the season ahead and to those in teams still to be selected, now is the time to show your pride and passion for SCC and lead by example. At the point of writing, the next highlight of the season is the SCC Hockey 6s before the season gets underway. Let’s hope we have many horses in our teams as we gallop towards our goal for more trophies and success this year! And finally, while we are all focused on the season ahead and senior level hockey, we can’t forget the importance of the grassroots and junior programmes that will help us stay at the top end of the club sports in Singapore for the years to come.

On 11 January, the SCC Mini Hockey Tournament was held. This was an initiative of the Hockey Section to help prospective Junior Sports Members embrace what the Club is about and what it can offer them. Coach Kanan, along with partner school SJI and their coach, Suketu Khabaria brought together two teams from the school, and two from the Hockey SSChool. They ended the day with buffet lunch and the great news that there are 10 boys and two girls set to become new SCC JSMs! This tournament is now planned to be an annual one. Thanks to everyone involved.

T

he Netball Section came back with a bang after the Christmas holidays, enjoying the CNY fireworks display at our second training session after the break! February is a busy month for the Section, starting with the SCC Friendly League which started on 10 February 10 and will run through until the end of April. With 15 teams, (up from just 10 last year), playing in three divisions, the league is looking to be bigger and better than ever before! In the past, the majority of teams taking part have been expat ones, but the inclusion of new local teams this year will certainly make things interesting and will pose a new challenge to the returning teams, including two of our own. Playing more local teams will also help our squads going forward, setting us up better for the ENL later in the year, as the majority of teams in our division will probably be local sides.

higher division moving down. This will mean that the higher division will be much more competitive, the lower division teams will get more exposure, and everyone gets to play a greater number of teams. Early 2014 will also see the official kick-off of the SCC City League. The friendly league will take place at the SCC during weekly lunchtimes, with two quick halves of 15 minutes each. Watch this space for more details! The beginning of the year also meant that the Netball Section had to say goodbye to a very Special Member. Helen Lovering has been one of our most dedicated Members for the last three years, turning up for training most weeks, being the first to volunteer for social events and intersection events. A Committee Member from 2012, Social Secretary for a year followed by Tour Manager, she was one of our most vocal and social members and will be a big loss to the Section and to the team. We wish her all the best in Australia! Do remember that we are always looking for new Members, male and female, so if you’re interested in giving netball a go, please contact us at sccnetball@gmail.com, and come down to join one of our training sessions at the Club every Wednesday, 6.30pm.

Our mixed team, the ‘SCC Falcons’, are also looking stronger than ever. After our very successful intersection last year, a few men from other Sports Sections have officially joined the team. The Falcons will be competing in the upcoming Mixed-Netball Social League, which runs weekly and looks to develop the profile and visibility of mixed-netball in a socially competitive atmosphere. Previously the mixed league has been played as a round robin, with the winner selected based on points. This year, there will be two divisions in the league, and after a round of round robin, the divisions will be reshuffled – with the top two teams in the lower division moving up and the bottom two from the

RUGBY Scribe: Alan Kent Convenor: Marc Lansonneur

SCC on Fire Nomads on Tour The rugby season started in 2014 with the Nomads tour to KL. After a long bus ride with a short stop for some protein loading, the lads arrived and prepared themselves for a tough match against Cobra with a quick city tour. The squad, made up of a good cross-section of players from all teams within the Section, struggled to gain cohesion in the early stages of the game, with the confusion of playing with new players further compounded by players forgetting what lines on a rugby field actually mean. This allowed Cobra to get off to a cracking start, scoring two quick tries as their lightweight squad floated across the damp and muddy turf.

The game was everything it was billed to be, with a large crowd entertained by running rugby, some old school rucking, handbag throwing, sheer determination and grit from players fighting for their team. At the end of the battle, it was Elliot Smith’s Lions coached by Matt Parsons that took the honours by 39-7. The Growlers, with several games remaining, are well on track to finish runner-up in the Conference. In the premiership, the SCC Prems’ fate was determined by other results. They finished 2nd and will be fired up for their first game in 2 months when they take on Saint Andrews in the Cup Quarter Final.

All the best to the teams for their final games!

In true Nomad tradition, the boys pulled it in tight and dominated from the 20th to 70th minute before the heavy field and KFC started to take effect. Cobra came back strong with some fine long distance tries closing the gap, before SCC scored again and held on by some heroic tackling from Cristian at the back to win 32-24. Cobra hosted well and our thanks go out to TJ and their team for a very enjoyable tour. Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad Firstly the Tankards, a season of domination and commitment, led by Big Sam Sharp and coached by Damian Pereira and Mark James. It all came down to the wire with their final game of the season; a real dog fight 18-16 wins over previously undefeated Oldham. Finishing with six wins from seven and gaining bonus points in their six wins, in what can only be described as a great season. It was a pleasure to see the Tankards back on top of the Championship. The boys have been resting up and are rearing to have a crack at Bedok Kings 1st team in the Quarter Finals of the Cup.

Elliot Smith firing up the Lions

Not wanting to be outshone, the Mighty Growlers and SCC Lions, both undefeated, met in a top of the table clash to determine who would be crowned Conference Champions. It was a spectacle all in the Section had been waiting to see, Section Convenor and Growlers prop Marc ‘Le Wedgie’ Lansonneur summed it up perfectly: “The Lions look good, fresh and confident, but we have serious experience and extra pounds on our side...” Tankards on Attack

et us reflect back on the PADS team for 2013. The whole season for the Pads has been aimed at reaching key objectives, so we introduced certain changes to our season. We introduced training and coaching evenings, played against much stronger and better opposition, played in our own style and developed a strong squad as opposed to a strong team. All of this has paid dividends to what has been a very successful and impressive season – culminating in the ultimate victory in Phuket against our ‘auld enemy’ Hong Kong Football Club and bringing home the Henrik Lorenz Memorial Trophy for only the second time. We took our full squad of 23 players to Phuket with the aim of playing all 23, against a 15 man strong HKFC at the Youth Football Home. We set our game plan for the 4 x 20 minute quarters and took the game to HKFC with a devastating effect. We scored after five minutes with a wicked free kick whipped in by the hard grafting ‘Blade Runner’(Duffs), flicked on by Captain Kenny and smashed home by ‘Here Comes the Boon’ (Boon) – Singapore 1-0! For the first quarter we hit the bar and the post and put another effort into the trees – further proof that the shooting practice on Monday nights paid off. Superb performances by all players in defence – Alan Jope, Gordon Deas, Jim Parkin and well led by Mickey Drake. The midfield had dominated the first quarter led by Captain Kenny, Silver Surfer and Boon and Ozzie Pete. The new Baby Pads playing in their first Henrik Lorenz match accounted for themselves very well indeed and were led by the front two of Jas and Blade Runner. Changes were made with Brian Lavelle, Charlie and Paul Paffett joining the defence along with Toe Knee Hopwood, Shooter and

Amos in midfield and well led by the battering rams of Huw and Killer Khan. The second quarter saw HKFC getting over the first quarter shock of Pads actually running around and competing rather than wandering around wondering what was going on, the new management philosophy of early to bed by 5.00am was working! Further hitting of the bar followed and several near misses meant that we went in at half time 1-0 up and should have been 4-0. More importantly, HKFC were in shock and most unhappy that they hadn’t touched much of the ball and already arguing amongst themselves – Come on, Pads! The third quarter started where the second quarter finished with an astonishing save from Ronnie at one end, followed by an even more astonishing save from Whibbers majestic header. HKFC were starting to make a game of it and a further key block by the impressive Scarlet meant we remained at 1-0. Further near misses came from a missed header by the ‘Eagle’, a shot over the bar by Captain Kenny and a fine save form Ozzie Pete. The fourth quarter launched into action with a wicked free kick from ‘Blade Runner’ somehow kept out by the keeper and the introduction of ‘Lighthouse’ seemed to put Pads firmly into control. A wicked injury to the ‘Eagle’ took him out of the game when he tried 1 step over too many and pulled a muscle. In the final minutes, the game went end to end with further saves from Jas and Ozzie Pete and a disallowed goal by Boon for seemingly wearing the wrong after shave, and in the final seconds, a goal bound free kick from Captain Kenny brought another save from the keeper. With legs tiring and hearts beating fast, the Pads went crazy when the arsenal clad referee put the whistle to his lips. The rest as they say was a blur. Congratulations to the entire squad who I hope that I have mentioned and also to Sebb Williams who I forgot to call on during the game. Guys you are a credit to the Club and fought for the squad from start to finish and we brought the Cup home!

SQUASH

Scribe & Convenor: Manmindar Singh

Masonry Singapore Squash Open 9-18 Jan 2014 Another strong performance by our players in this annual event that serves as the kick-off to the squash season. In the Men’s Open, Vivian Rhamanan came out top with a win over fellow club mate, Anders Yeo. This was Vivian’s fifth consecutive win in this event, a testament to his consistency over the years. This was a particularly good win for Vivian considering that this was one of the strongest fields for the event in quite some time.

Our Junior does us proud in Scottish Junior Open 2014 Chua Man Chin, one of our up and coming juniors, travelled to the UK before New Year to take part in the prestigious British Junior Open (BJO) and Scottish Junior Open (SJO). In the BJO, Man Chin won his first match before losing to the 2nd seed from Malaysia who finally ended up runner up in the event. He won two out of the four following matches to come in a credible 26th position. Man Chin had this to say of his experience in the BJO especially in the loss to the second seed: “This match was a really great experience and I definitely have gained much knowledge on how to move the opponent around the court more effectively as I was controlled all over the place by Eain Yow. He isn’t a fanciful player and plays a simple yet effective basic game. He sets up the rally by containing me at the back and forces a loose shot out of me.” He must have learnt from his experience at the BJO as Man Chin did himself proud by going all the way to the finals in the SJO. Unfortunately, after coming back from two sets down, he lost to his Croatian opponent 11-9 in the fifth set. Man Chin started out poorly in the match as he lacked the patience but settled down to play a controlled game thereafter to bring himself back into contention. A good lesson for a young player like Man Chin to come to understand that patience and a good basic game can be an excellent platform for success.

Anders’ second placing underscored the clubs standing at the Mens Premier level. In the Ladies Open, JSM Michelle Tay came in runners-up, losing to a more experienced opponent. In the age-group events, our juniors did really well. Alethea Sim won the Girls U-19, Michelle Tay and Chong Yin Jean came in second and third respectively in the Girls U-17. Bernyce Tay was third in the Girls U-15. Our boys were not outdone as Timothy Leong and Reuben Tay came in second and third respectively in the Boys U-19, Rayden Tan was champion and Sean Lim, third in the Boys U-17. Rutvik Rau came in third in the Boy U-15. Overall, a good performance that bodes well for the upcoming league season!

Man Chin had this to say about his match in the final: “It was rather sad to lose the match as I was just one step away from bringing the final game to a tiebreak but overall it was still a great match as I learnt that patience was the key to winning in this match and I should have played a simple and basic game!”. Our congratulations to Man Chin on his performance at the SJO. Man Chin will be playing for us in the Men’s Premier Grade in the upcoming league season and we look forward to seeing a lot more successes from him in the months ahead!

Come cheer the team on!! Tennis Ladder The tennis ladder kicked off on 7 February 2014, allowing players to hone their match playing experience and also to meet other tennis members at the club. SCC cheers on the Australian Open Finalists The temperature during the Australian Open in Melbourne soared up to 40 degrees, adding further pressure to the players on court. Meanwhile in Singapore, the Tennis Section rallied behind the players in the cool of the Men’s Bar, and the warmth of satay and a variety of finger food. There were collective “oohs” and “aaahs” when Li Na struggled to take the reins of the first set, but eventually won the match and the title in two sets. The men’s match was of course more intense as Wawrinka and Nadal battled it out on court, despite injuries. Having seen such flawless tennis at the Australian Open, we hope that will be our inspiration to lead us to a successful singles league and tournament year ahead!
