I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Members of the General Committee (GC) who have given their valuable time and effort to represent the best interests of the Membership of the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC), and lent their expertise in guiding the Club Management throughout their term of office in 2019/2020. Our Subcommittees were also instrumental in pushing forward initiatives for the betterment of the Club and I would like to thank the Subcommittee Members - invited from multiple categories of Membership and across a diverse range of professional disciplines – for working closely with the GC and Club Management to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the Club.

SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB

While 2019 had its challenges, including Members being unable to play sports on the Padang, we pulled through and emerged with better-than-expected results, thanks to efficient resource utilization, strategic planning, and prudent investments in Club improvements. Detailed planning and close follow-up with our partners and contractors also enabled us to reinstate our sports facilities ahead of schedule so Members could return earlier and enjoy their matches back on home ground. The crème de la crème momentous occasion of 2019 was the visit by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Mrs Lee to the Club’s Distinguished Visitor’s Dinner on 5 December 2019. At the dinner,

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

PM was conferred the title of “Distinguished Visitor”; the conferment of this title makes PM the Club’s third Patron – a title which was first bestowed upon the then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on 12 December 1970, and upon then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 2 February 2007. During the dinner, the Club presented a $300,000 cheque for SportCares to Mr Lim Teck Yin, CEO of SportSG, while Prime Minister Lee witnessed the ceremony. This event was covered by the local media on television, print and online platforms and is testimony to the Club’s position in the community since it was established in 1852. As Prime Minister noted, “The SCC has been here, watching history unfold, and witnessing the complete transformation of the city over the years. The Padang has remained where it is. So has the SCC.” Financially I am glad to report that we did better than the year before, reporting a net surplus after income tax of S$395,000 which was S$176,000 higher than the previous year. Though our operating revenue increased by only S$30,000, we were able to better the profit by adopting new and innovative systems to increase margins and reduce cost. During the year, we embarked on a refurbishment project for STUMPS; by increasing the bar size and enhancing the layout and equipment, we have improved efficiencies in the bar and service areas. Additionally, we upgraded the Oval kitchen to incorporate a new designated wash-up area for greater productivity and turnaround time. Meanwhile, at SCC Dempsey, we worked on improvements to the Dempsey Clubhouse so Members would have a comfortable environment to relax at before and after games and matches. Apart from new toilet and shower facilities and furniture, the F&B Shack was also upgraded with improved foodservice and beverage equipment facilities. These improvements helped the Club tide over the months

during which we did not have Padang field and needed alternative training and playing grounds. Both Sports and F&B go hand in hand in providing recreation and entertainment for our Members and are integral parts of our revenue generation; the GC will continue to ensure these facilities are of high standards. We amplified our communication channels with a new website and increased our social media presence to generate more publicity for the F&B, Social and Sports events and activities. Our dining and social events continue to remain popular, and a great way for Members to mingle and interact indoors. Our Sports Sections were exemplary this year – we are proud of our Members who flew the national flag high at the Southeast Asian Games 2019 and other international competitions and won a total of nine individual and team medals. In their various local leagues and regional competitions, our Sections performed well and we are grateful to them for their dedication and hard work. The three signature tournaments run by SCC – Hockey6s, Soccer7s and Rugby7s – attracted large and quality team participation both from Singapore and around the globe, in turn drawing great numbers of spectators which not only helped contribute to high F&B spend and revenues but also boosted the Club’s reputation as a sporting mecca of high international esteem. The Sections are continuing to invest in the future development of their respective sports and juniors in Singapore. Not only are our Cricket and Rugby Sections continuing with their youth development programs, this year the Football Section also introduced a junior football program in partnership with Chelsea Football Club International Development Program – Singapore. Meanwhile, our Tennis and Squash Sections are expanding their coaching capacities for our younger ones.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

This year, two new portfolios were created in the GC: Special Projects (e-Commerce and Social / Sports Outreach), and Special Projects (Sports). The focus of the GC remains to increase interaction within the Membership, and we will continue to work to increase intra-Club participation and engagement between our more sporting-focused Members and our more social Members. Of the intersection events held this year, one highlight was the newly reinstated 100-yard President’s Dash held during the SCC Rugby7s tournament. We have further tried to expand the Intersection events to Intersection leagues; this will increase the membership value for our Membership. We are a multi-sports club and we encourage Members to participate in more than one sports. A meaningful part of 2019 for the Club was the adoption of SportCares – the philanthropic arm of Sports Singapore - as our Club charity for this year. The Club has always believed in the great positive force of sports in inspiring and enabling our children and youth and build stronger communities; with these being the same goals of SportCares, it was a privilege for us to have the opportunity to encourage their good work. As part of the Club’s participation in Singapore’s commemoration of its Bicentennial, the SCC decided to raise funds for SportCares and also organised two weeks of cultural and food events themed “A Fiesta of Heritage and New Beginnings” that celebrated Singapore’s and the Club’s own diverse heritage while also heralding a new era in nation building. A total of seven events were organised, with the key highlight being the SCC Heritage Charity Ball held at InterContinental Hotel Singapore in Bugis so that we could accommodate a 300-pax dinner to raise as much funds as we could for our adopted charity SportCares; from the live charity auctions alone, more than $38,000 was raised. Altogether, the Club raised $300,000 for SportCares and I thank our Members for their generosity.

SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB

Of all my years as a Member at the Singapore Cricket Club, these last three years as President have been extremely meaningful for me and I am grateful for the trust you have placed in me to lead this prestigious institution. My thanks to the General Committee, Subcommittee Members, Section committees, tournament organising committees and volunteers from multiple categories of Membership and across a diverse range of professional disciplines who have worked closely with the GC and Club Management to ensure the smooth and efficient operations of the Club. I am thankful to all Members for accepting all the changes we have been trying to bring to the Club for its betterment. It has been our honour to have been entrusted with this responsibility of guiding the Club for three consecutive terms. But the Club’s success would not have been possible without you, the Members, and we thank you for your support in making the SCC a better club. There is always room for improvement and I am confident the new General Committee will do even better.

his quote from U.S. Olympic gold-medal winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton sums up - very simply - why I have been a very happy longtime Member of the SCC, and a passionate supporter of our teams and activities. A lot of good memories were made in 2019 and it was really pleasing to see the successes achieved across many sports and activities. Some of the standout successes included the National Snooker League Division 5 win, and Peter Gilchrist’s victory at the World Billiards Championship finals, attaining his sixth world title, as well as a great photo and story in the Straits Times. It was also fantastic to see a good number of SCC Members representing Singapore at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in a host of sports, and winning medals in Lawn Bowls, Squash and Billiards.

Special mention to Shermeen Lim who enjoyed an unforgettable 2019 winning gold at the 13th Asian Lawn Bowls Championship in the Singles event, and gold again – with Amira Goh - at the Southeast Asian Games winning the Women’s Triples crown together. Shermeen was 12th in the top-20 overall World Cup Indoor Singles rankings and was also awarded the Individual Meritorious Award at the Singapore National Olympic Council Annual Awards Dinner. I am proud that SCC has played a part in Shermeen’s success – she was introduced to the sport by SCC veteran (and her coach) Mrs. Mary Lim at Catholic Junior College - and has been hooked since then. Other Lawn Bowls successes included a championship in the National Triples Women’s Event and second and third placings in the National Singles categories. Our teams also finished second and third in the National Pairs Men’s Event, second in the National Triples Men’s Event, two runner-up spots in the National Fours (Men’s Women’s events) and joint third place in the Lion City Cup. We saw double success in Hockey with the SCC First XI Men and Ladies Teams winning their respective leagues in the National Hockey League Division. The SCC Ladies Team also won the National Indoor Hockey League for the third year running, while the SCC Masters team was crowned the champion of the ISCI International Hockey 8s Festival (Legends Tournament) – the Masters team also took home top honours at the Pesta Sukan Hockey 5s (Masters Competition). It was pleasing to host another successful SCC International Hockey 6s – a landmark 25th tournament and results-wise, the SCC Fishermen (men’s team) was the Bowl Runner-Up, the SCC Temasek (Ladies’ Team) was the cup winner, and Lea Hartmann from SCC Temasek was named Ladies’ Player of the Tournament. In Tennis, the SCC Ladies A team won the Singapore Tennis Association’s Interclub Singles League. Meanwhile on the Squash court, our Ladies team won the Division Two title in the Singapore Squash Rackets Association National League. On the Football front, SCC Firsts were runner ups in the Open Cup category of the SCC International Soccer 7s, while the SCC Masters won the Masters. A Fair Play award was also presented to the SCC NFL (National Football League) team at the 2019 Football Association of Singapore (FAS) awards. The SCC Netballers emerged as Bowl Champions at the Bangkok Southerners Netball Invitational tournament. The SCC Hawks (first team) notched a major milestone in taking the first runners-up spot in the National Netball League Division 2 for the first time. On the Rugby field, the SCC U16 Boys were the Bowl Winners in the KL Tigers Tournament. At the Singapore Rugby Union - Club 7s Tournament, SCC Gold won the Cup Champions title and the SCC Blacks were the Plate Champions. SCC also hosted and won an Interport match against the Hong Kong Football Club. Our Cricketers were in action at the SCA T20 Final with the SCC Lions taking the runners-up spot. In the SCA League 2019, our Lions team took the runners-up spot in the Premier 50 Over competition. Finally, I want to salute the winners honoured at the SCC Sports Awards in April 2019 which saw Shermeen Lim named Sportswomen of the Year, Matthew Ngui winning Sportsman of the Year, and team of the year accolade going to the SCC 1st XV Prems (Rugby) – a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement award was also presented to Peter Schott. I also want to highlight Ravi Chandran who hit a hole-in-one last year – I am sure Ravi will be dining out on this for many years to come.

As I mentioned at the start, I am honoured to be part of the SCC family which brings together people from different backgrounds, interests, and passions. Our diversity and teamwork (on and off the field) are terrific strengths and I want to end by thanking our “unsung hero” backroom teams – including the Convenors, Section Committees, Tournament Organising Committees, sponsors, the Sports Department and many others who put in the hours, help drive our success, and embody how our teamwork first values and culture. 019 was a very special year with Singapore celebrating its Bicentennial. Consequent to the special NDP celebrations we had no access to the Padang field from late March to August. Against this backdrop and its resulting disruptions however, the financial results still showed improvement in operating revenue, a lower operating deficit and a higher surplus as compared to 2018. The Club on its own initiative also commemorated the Bicentennial with the nation by organizing various activities including its SCC Heritage Charity Ball on 25 October 2019 and altogether raised $300,000 for SportCares. SUMMARY OF FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS • Operating Revenue of S$19.63 million was a slight improvement over 2018 S$19.60m. • Operating Deficit of -S$1.25 million was S$195k lower than 2018. • After-tax bottom line Surplus of S$395k was S$176k higher than 2018.

CLUB’S OPERATING AND NET SURPLUS / (DEFICIT) YEAR 2009 TO 2019

OPERATING FINANCIAL POSITION

Operating Deficit

Operating Revenue

The Operating Deficit of -S$1.25 million was S$195k lower than last year’s deficit of -S$1.45 million.

Operating Revenue of S$19.63 million for 2019 was S$30k higher than last year’s S$19.6 million. F&B total revenue, despite the NDP 2019 disruptions, was S$9.76 million against S$9.61 million in 2018, an increase of S$142k or 1.5% higher. Sports & Recreation total revenue was S$2.58 million which was just S$85k below 2018 total revenue of S$2.67 million, mainly due to the closure of the Padang Field for NDP 2019 preparation. Operating Expenditure Operating Expenditure was S$20.89 million, S$164k or 0.8% below last year’s total of S$21.05 million. The lower expenditure was mainly due to the lower F&B cost of sales of S$224k, lower Social Events expenditure of $72k and lower Sports and Recreation expenditure of S$54k. The resulting decrease in Operating Expenditure was partially offset by higher Management and other staff costs of $47k, General expenses of $62k and higher Depreciation costs of $82k.

AR14

SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB

NET SURPLUS / (DEFICIT) AFTER INCOME TAX The Club realised a surplus of S$395k, S$176k higher than the prior year. The reduction in transfer fees of S$290k was partially offset by a higher interest income of S$152k and increase in conversion fees of S$122k. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FINANCIAL YEAR Subscription and Fees Subscription and Fees accounted for 28% of Club revenues in 2019, which is similar to what was seen in the prior year. Food and Beverage (F&B) The F&B Department incurred a deficit of S$203k, a significant improvement of S$340k over the prior year. Both revenue and cost of sales have moved in a positive direction, with the gross profit improving by 6.5% due to better cost control measures that were implemented by the management team.

SUBCOMMITTEE• FINANCE

Sports & Recreation (S&R) S&R saw a decrease in revenues of S$85k, mainly due to lower rental of facilities and other income of S$181k due to loss of Padang field for the NDP and lower Sports membership fees of S$30k. This was partially offset by higher sports section income of S$117k, mainly drawn from the higher revenue derived from the Cricket Youth Academy programs. On a departmental level, S&R bottom line performance slightly worsened with the net deficit being higher by S$37k from the prior year, mainly caused by the corresponding higher sports section expenditure and depreciation. Membership Transfer Membership Transfer Fees decreased by S$290k due to loss of Padang field and road closure resulting from the NDP causing a perceived negative impression of the Club. Cash Position

expenses. As such, we will need to increase our focus on improvements in staff and process productivity including cost controls focusing on the supply chain and harnessing technology for daily operations. We also need to seek opportunities to increase both F&B revenue and rental income of both Padang and Dempsey field. The last increase in Members’ subscriptions was in 2010 and whilst the Club generated a net surplus of S$395k in 2019, continuing upward pressure on costs means that the Club will continue to closely monitor the relationship between Members’ subscriptions and Operating Revenues and Expenditures. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to take this opportunity to thank all fellow Members of the Finance Subcommittee who selflessly contributed their valuable time and expertise during the year. I would also like to thank the Financial Controller and his team for their commitment and continued efforts.

As at the end of 2019, the Club had cash resources of S$23.7 million, versus S$23.2 million in 2018. The Sinking Fund was established in 2016 for the purpose of lease renewal for the Club (which includes the Padang field) and for capital expenditure specifically authorised by the general body of members. In 2019, we have transferred S$1.6 million to the Sinking Fund (S$1.27 million of transfer and conversion fees, and S$305k of interest received on fixed deposits).

Rangachari Raghavan Finance Member Finance Subcommittee

The Club’s cash reserves need to be increased each year so that sufficient funds are available for the renewal of the Club lease in 2026 which includes the Padang field, and for capital projects. THE YEAR AHEAD Going forward, Singapore is facing fresh challenges caused by the COVID-19 situation which impeded negatively into the general economic well-being of not only Singapore but also the world economy at large. The current situation may potentially have an adverse impact on our Members’ patronage of the Club with an exceptionally high cancellation and postponement of events seen in February including our very own Hockey 6s tournament scheduled in February/March 2020 being now postponed. The Club has taken steps to improve overall Club hygiene and cleanliness to fight and prevent the potential spread of the virus and both the Management and staff are working together to tide over this rather difficult period with appropriate measures including preparing a Business Continuity Plan and other recommendations put forth by the government. In addition, the Club continues to face pressures from cost increases especially in manpower, food and beverage and other operating

aving the best Club in Singapore in a premier location for the Membership is important, and having a team which keeps it functioning every day of the year is paramount to that; we are very fortunate to have hardworking and dedicated employees striving to make that happen. The Establishment Committee is in place to help support management to look after our team and to consistently review how we can improve things to ensure that all our staff work in an environment which, whilst always challenging, must also be rewarding, motivating and enjoyable. As with all businesses, we face many challenges - maintaining high standards in quality and service, keeping and supporting the talented staff we have and want to attract, meeting the government restrictions on hiring foreign workers - all of which make the HR department a crucial function of the Singapore Cricket Club.

STAFF TRAINING In 2019, we have continued to try and increase the training required to improve staff’s capabilities and individual career progression. Many of the staff are trained in line with the business needs to serve the Membership well; such training will also help benefit them as individuals. • Food & Beverage Training Through our Club’s sponsorship, Kenn Lee – our Senior Bar Captain attained his Diploma in F&B Management. • Occupational First Aid Training: Staff have been trained in First Aid to ensure a safe environment for all. • Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) Training: Our staff are trained to understand how to be compliant and know how to handle personal data in accordance with the PDPA. STAFF ACTIVITIES & WELFARE Staff participated in the 2019 Chingay segment that commemorates Singapore’s Bicentennial in February. Staff activities have increased with bi-weekly bowling and ad-hoc movie sessions. CONCLUSION On behalf of myself and the General Committee, I would like to give a sincere vote of thanks and appreciation to our General Manager, the Management team and every one of our employees for their efforts and continued service to our Members. It is always a pleasure to come to the Club and this is down to each and every single one of them. Thank you all very much.

he SCC’s Food & Beverage (F&B) Department has concluded a positive year of operations across all F&B outlets despite challenges that were overcome with team effort and strategic leadership. The Subcommittee has been focusing on new initiatives to ensure the continuous enhancement of the F&B Department to match market trends. We have seen encouraging results with an increase of revenue in F&B for the year 2019 compared to 2018. The F&B Subcommittee and SCC management aim to develop new directions and create new dining concepts to enhance Members’ dining experience at the Club. The main focuses are to improve food quality and consistency, and ensure it is value for money whilst maintaining cost efficiency throughout the Department.

SUBCOMMITTEE • FOOD & BEVERAGE

NEW FOOD & BEVERAGE INITIATIVES A wide variety of F&B promotions were introduced in 2019 and some had garnered very good responses from our Members and their guests. We have promoted the ‘Monday to Thursday’ Beverage specials, improved the range of Carvery Lunch at the Main Lounge, introduced healthier choices of food and introduced new highlights for Hawker Fare at the Courtyard as well as Main Lounge Friday promotions. The Oval Restaurant and Padang Restaurant Ala Carte menus were revamped and set at competitive prices.

The Oval & Verandah continues to offer a full range of SCC signature dishes as well as a wide variety of local and Western specials. Popular monthly specials were introduced to our menu and were well-received. The Oval kitchen introduced a new washing area to improve efficiency and continue to maintain a high hygiene standard and create a healthy working environment for the culinary team.

As part of the Club’s efforts to reduce the strain of unnecessary plastic in our environment, we have implemented steps to phase out the use of plastic bags and will move to eliminate their use in 2020.

Our Friday fortnightly ‘Hawker Fare’ in the Courtyard has become a firm favourite for dining on evenings for Members, their families and friends. Favourites include Satay, Mee Goreng, Oyster Omelette, Chinese Rojak and Chendol as well as Chef Arfin’s much sought-after specialty dishes Soup Kambing, Soto Ayam, Indian Mee Goreng, Rojak, Roti Prata, Thosai, Spicy Mutton Ribs and Nasi Goreng Kampong style.

BARS

TRAINING

The F&B Subcommittee aims to introduce high quality wines and liquors at the most affordable ‘Can’t Get in Town’ prices. The Club also invested on better glassware for whiskies and wines. Promotions such as ‘Bucket & Tower of Beers’, ‘Monday Corkage free’, ‘Tuesday Whiskey 1-for-1’, ‘Wednesday Beer 1-for-1’, ‘Wine Down Thursday’ and ‘Festive promotions’ were generously introduced to Members. The Club has also introduced a wide selection of fine wines from all over the world to cater to the preferences of our Members – all offered by the glass. Stumps underwent a revamp and was reopened in June with a brand new look and reinvigorated bar F&B menu. RESTAURANTS New table settings with fresh flowers centrepiece and upgraded glassware have helped create a lovely dining ambience at the Padang Restaurant. Almond Milk was introduced for coffee drinkers who are lactose intolerant at all F&B Outlets. Fresh coconuts were added to the menu as an option for fresh fruit juices. Wine dinners offered during the year continue to be fully booked by Members and our chefs do an excellent job of pairing the wines with the food menu.

SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB

Staff training remains an important area of focus for continuous improvements in service standards and product knowledge. We will continue to invest in trainings to help develop our staff’s skills, which in turn uplifts the overall service quality of the Club. Since the new point-of-sales system – Northstar, came on board in December 2017, the Club introduced the IPad ordering system in March 2018 that has helped increase the efficiency of the service provided in all F&B outlets. Members continue to enjoy seamless service paired with the constantly upgraded technology usage in the Club. EVENTS A series of SCC Wine and Gourmet Series at the Padang Restaurant was organised on a monthly basis. Past successful events include ‘Wines from the Commonwealth’ Wine Pairing Dinner and ‘Big Reds’ Wine Pairing Dinner. There are many more upcoming wine dinners already planned for 2020 which aim to discover the charm of many exquisite wines to pair with the delicious cuisine that the SCC Padang Restaurant offers exclusively. The SCC Night Race welcomed a diversity of Members and their guests from all around the world. The general feedback on our F&B was most inspiring. Our club-wide events such as the festive celebrations and the New Year’s Eve countdown ball continued to generate and improve F&B revenues and definitely bring the Club to life!

SUBCOMMITTEE • FOOD & BEVERAGE

The Club commemorated Singapore’s Bicentennial with two weeks of events which concluded with the SCC Heritage Charity Ball held at InterContinental Hotel where SCC raised a total of $300K for SportCares. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited the Club on 5 December to present the cheque together with SCC President to SportCares. In conjunction with celebrating Administrative Professionals Day, Members and their guests got to enjoy a specially created four-course set lunch at the Padang restaurant at an affordable price. This was very well received as Members could recognize and celebrate the work of secretaries, administrative assistants and other office professionals for their contributions to the workplace. BANQUET With our wonderful selection of F&B and stunning views from the Padang Restaurant, Gilmour Room & Terrace, our banquet services remained abuzz throughout the year with Members’ social and corporate private events. The Victoria Room gives our Members as well as corporate clients a good alternative at a more affordable minimum spending to host small parties and seminar meetings. The breakfast and seminar package introduced in 2018 for banquet has been very well received. WINE CIRCLE With about 150 Wine Circle Members joined to-date, there were many well-received wine classes and dinners organized in year 2019, including the ‘MASI Wine Tasting Event’ and ‘The Great Aussie BBQ with Wines from Peterson’s’. GOOD HYGIENE PRACTICES The F&B Department emphasizes and enforces the highest standard in food and hygiene. Regular sanitation in our kitchen is essential and all of our F&B outlets are awarded an ‘A’ Grade by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). Ensuring good hygiene practice will continue to be the F&B Subcommittee’s and management’s utmost priority.

Chovin Blix Ong. The F&B Team will continue to work hand in hand to achieve Service Beyond Expectations and Creating Memories since 1852. Finally, I thank Members for their support and kind words to our F&B Staff and Management. Your invaluable feedback and comments are important to us, and you can be assured that we will continue to strive to offer the best food, the best beverage and the best service quality possible as well as ‘value-for-money’ for Members to enjoy.

CONCLUSION Last but not least, I will like to thank the Members of the F&B Subcommittee for their time and significant contribution to the success of 2019. I further express my sincere appreciation to all F&B Department Staff led by Executive Chef Raymond Lee and Ms.

T

he year 2019 was a dynamic and productive one for Marketing and Communications as we launched new communication channels to deliver Club announcements and highlight social and sporting events and F&B promotions. This paid off with increased patronage and participation in Club activities which in turn contributed to the Club’s revenue. THE PADANG MAGAZINE The bi-monthly Padang continues to be a popular publication with a readership of approximately 20,000. More than just a means to plug Club events and seasonal F&B specials, the Padang magazine also helps to build the Club’s ethos and identity through its special editorial features and Club achievements. The diversity and distinction of our membership are also represented in the articles and interviews with Members.

SUBCOMMITTEE • MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

SCC WEBSITE A new Club website was launched in May 2019 that aimed to be more visually appealing, user-friendly and intuitive and it has been well-received with high traffic volume: • Average unique visitors per month: 6,740 • Average page views per month: 22,735 • Pages per session: 2.36 Much of our focus over the past year had been to ensure the website was fully functioning and updated, bugs removed and improvements made. Now that this is done and with positive statistics to boot, we will focus on converting external visitors into new Members and prompt more frequent patronage among existing Members. . SOCIAL MEDIA In 2019, we more than doubled the number of Facebook Page followers to 1,260, with an average reach of approximately 3,200. At 9.5 per cent, our post engagement rate is higher than the industry average of 5 per cent. We launched our Instagram platform in July 2019 and have a respectable average monthly reach (the number of unique accounts that have seen our posts) of 1,100 while our average monthly impressions ( the total number of times all our posts have been seen) stand at 3,850.

SUBCOMMITTEE • MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

Our social media platforms have vastly improved our interaction with Members and provided more convenient and timely feedback of Club activities and promotions. Social media has also helped us communicate our sporting achievements not only to Members but also to the wider non-member audience. By connecting and resharing content from our Sports Sections and Tournaments that are also active on social media, we have promoted and inspired pride in our Club and built a thriving online community. Thank you Sports Sections for being our brand ambassadors. In December, we started our YouTube channel. We look forward to creating interesting content across our various digital and print avenues, generating synergies that will empower our marketing and communication efforts to effectively build SCC’s reputation. GENERATING REVENUE In totality, our communication assets are being recognised as viable vehicles for businesses to reach a wide and discerning audience. In terms of contra arrangements, Club sponsors took up over $40,000 worth of advertising space while direct advertisement sales were a decent $4,740. There will be a continued push to generate revenue from our various media. SOUVENIRS Gross souvenir sales for 2019 totalled just over $50,000, with a higher monthly average profit margin of 39 per cent, marginally higher than the previous year despite there being a lesser number of products for sale following our decision to cease production of less popular items. The top three popular souvenir items were the SCC black cap, our new 2019 polo tees, and placemats. The limited-edition SCC mug which we launched to commemorate Singapore’s Bicentennial is also on our best-seller list. Moving forward, we will be revamping the Souvenir Shop to maximise the retail shelf space and create a more visually appealing store. We will also be introducing new souvenir items for sale. I would like to thank the Marketing & Communications Subcommittee Members for volunteering their time and sharing their expertise as well as the staff team for their resourcefulness and dedication. I would also like to thank the Membership for their support and feedback. Marcom will continue to keep improving Member and external communications through the use of innovative technologies and work hard to uphold the traditions and values of the Singapore Cricket Club.

n addition to maintaining and upkeeping the standards of the Club’s facilities, the Property Subcommittee together with the Property & Housekeeping Department have also been busy with upgrading of facilities and infrastructure to enhance the comfort of Members and meet Members’ expectation. In April 2019, we embarked on a project to refurbish Stumps. The refurbishment work has given Stumps a timely and refreshing uplift. Over the years, heavy patronage resulted in fair wear and tear. In particular, the bar and service station were crammed with items and cables from add-on electronic devices. The refurbishment work was undertaken to improve efficiencies to the bar and service areas. The increased bar size with a new layout and equipment has helped increase efficiencies and improve the quality of refreshments served. To further enhance the original interiors, ceiling and wall cornices were added. The original pendants were restored while additional pendant lights installed. A new display cabinet was added to house our sports trophies and memorabilia. Overall the vibe is trendy and vintage.

To better serve Members, we installed an additional smart TV after the renovation. The newly refurbished bar has been well-received by Members who need a place to relax and unwind after a tiring game. I would like to thank Members of the Club for their understanding and bearing with the inconveniences during the period when renovation work was in progress. Another project undertaken during the year of review was upgrading work at the Oval kitchen to create a designated wash-up area that streamlines the washing of utensils and glasses – having the new system in place to organize the washing of dirty glasses / sorting of clean glasses helps enable quick turnover, and the provision of proper racking for storage of glasses will help reduce breakage and ensure proper hygiene is maintained. These will in turn enable the bar staff to be more productive in their core work of providing excellent service to our Members. Management successfully obtained a government grant of S$20,000 to fund the project. An ultra-short throw projector providing good image quality and a large motorised screen were installed at the Padang Restaurant to support the Club’s events and functions. In addition, new spotlights complete with a control system were installed at the venue. To discourage Members from sitting on the steps while waiting for taxis or pick-ups, we arranged an additional bench at the main entrance porch. In order to provide more comfort to our Members and visitors who smoke, we have installed an evaporative air cooler at the smoking area.

AR26

SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB

In preparation for Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s visit in December 2019, some minor renovation work was carried out to enhance the visual appearance of the Clubhouse. The walls at the porch, ceiling and walls at the lobby and staircase leading to the Padang Restaurant were given a fresh coat of paint. The two display cabinets at the Main Lounge were given a makeover, and a newly designed Visitors’ Board was fabricated. The red carpet at the main entrance was also replaced. Tree pruning and trimming of tree top crowns was carried out routinely on a six-months basis to maintain their structural integrity. The last tree pruning exercise was conducted shortly before the SCC Night Race to prevent tree canopies at the carparks from obscuring the race lighting. As part of our move to be greener, more trees were planted around the perimeter of the carparks to provide shade as well as environmental benefits. Fire safety inspection checks are conducted regularly to ensure compliance to fire safety regulations as well as provide a working tool to identify possible fire hazards. Two fire drills are conducted yearly to ensure staff are aware of evacuation procedures and their roles and responsibilities. Our automatic fire alarm system is tested and inspected on a monthly basis and defects are immediately rectified. The Club’s fire protection system is inspected and certified yearly by a Professional Engineer (PE) for Fire Certificate renewal. Utility consumption is continuously monitored to ensure wastage is reduced to a minimum. However, and as you would be aware, the cost of electricity saw a huge increase during the year, invariably translating into higher energy costs to the Club despite our efforts in

SUBCOMMITTEE • PROPERTY

consumption savings. We will continue with our efforts and strive to achieve better savings in the year ahead, especially in light of the rising costs. In our efforts to combat mosquito breeding, mosquito misting and larvicide treatment were carried out on a weekly basis. In addition, mosquito fogging was carried out fortnightly for the entire Club. Monthly general pest control treatment for Clubhouse and night fumigation for both kitchens were carried out as well. Our pest control vendor carried out bird narcotising to effectively manage bird infestation. Over the year, we have increased the number of CCTV cameras onsite to provide better coverage of the entire Clubhouse to enhance security and surveillance. These CCTV cameras have assisted us in our investigations of certain incidents which occurred in the Club. Waterproofing of the gutter around the Gilmour Terrace was carried out to prevent water seepage that cause spallation of concrete to the carpark. A number of less visible initiatives, some of which may have passed unnoticed, have also been completed including: • General repainting and varnishing of various areas within the Clubhouse • Replaced tarnished mirror at Padang Restaurant Gents toilet • Replaced cooling coils for AHUs serving the Gilmour Room and Stumps • Replacement of PABX system for the Clubhouse and Adelphi office • Replaced wicker furniture for the Courtyard & Gilmour Terrace • Refurbished bar stools for Main Lounge • Acquired a new AED for the MSD area • Refurbished tabletops and dining chairs for the Victoria Room • Replacement of carpet tiles for Oval Restaurant • Repair & replacement of sunken linoleum tiles at the back end of the bar at Main Lounge • Repainting of the changing rooms • Replacement of sump pumps at the carpark • Replacement of globe lights at the landscape along the Tennis court. • Fabrication of display cabinet for storage of sports trophies at Adelphi office. The challenges of maintaining the high standards of the Club in an ageing building could not have been possible without the invaluable experience and guidance of the Members of the Property Subcommittee. I would like to thank them for their invaluable and continued support. I also record my sincere thanks to the Property and Housekeeping staff for their patience and untiring efforts in maintaining all physical aspects of the Club to the highest possible standard and their continued support and contribution.

irst up, I would like to thank distinguished and long-standing Member, Chandra Mohan K. Nair, for accepting my invitation to be part of the Subcommittee. I am also grateful that distinguished Members Matthew C. Streeton, Martin Goerojo and Moiz H. Sithawalla agreed to remain as part of the Subcommittee, thereby ensuring continuity. Matthew had to leave the Subcommittee at the end of December 2019 as he and his lovely family moved to the USA. We wish him the best of luck and thank him for his many contributions to the Subcommittee. CLUB MEMBERSHIP In 2019, we welcomed 261 new Members to the Club and brought the number of Active Members to 3,997 as of December 2019. Of the new Members, 84 were Ordinary Transferable Members; 34 Term Members; 36 Sports Members; and 107 Junior Sports Members. After a slow start to the year, the number of Ordinary Transferable Memberships that were sold in 2019 picked up considerably towards the end of the year, no doubt thanks to the Member-get-Member incentive package that was introduced as part of the Club’s Bicentennial celebrations. There still remains a small number of Members wishing to sell their memberships and the Membership Sales Department is actively seeking to match these sellers with prospective buyers. It is urged that Members who wish to sell their memberships get in touch with the Membership Sales Department so that they may achieve the best possible selling price.

It is heartening to note that each year the Club remains able to attract a substantial number of Sports, Term and Junior Sports Members to join the Club and even more heartening to note that a considerable number of these Members subsequently convert their memberships to Ordinary Transferable Memberships - a testament and endorsement of their positive experience with the Club. RECIPROCAL AGREEMENTS The Rules & Membership Subcommittee regularly reviews the list of existing Reciprocal Agreements with other Clubs and Associations around the world. One new relationship was established in 2019; Members can now enjoy reciprocal privileges at the Sydney Cricket Ground. With the new addition, we bring the total number of Reciprocal Agreements to 116. CHANGES TO CLUB RULES At the Club’s Annual General Meeting held on 30 April 2019 (“AGM”), three separate resolutions proposed by Mr. Mohan J. Bhojwani, Mr. Desmond Decker and Mr. Yap Giau Peck were passed at the AGM. The three Resolutions are as follows: 1. THAT the incoming Committee works towards putting forth as soon as practicable and in any event no later than at the 2020 AGM a proposed rule change such that the elected Committee Members shall hold office for a term of two (02) years as opposed to the current one (01) year term. This is to ensure continuity and stability in the governance of the Club. If this resolution is carried, that the proposed rule change provides for a maximum term for President, Deputy President, Chairman of Games Control Board and Finance Member of two consecutive terms (i.e. 4 consecutive years). 2. THAT pursuant to Rule 35, an Ordinary Member who has been suspended by the Club for a three (03) months or longer period shall be barred from holding office of President, Deputy President, Chairman of Finance and Chairman of Games Control Board for a period of five (05) years upon completion of his suspension. a) Key office bearers of the club must uphold the highest standard of decorum and discipline. Such key office bearers must have an unblemished disciplinary record.

3. THAT pursuant to Rule 37, an elected office bearer of the Club shall not conduct any business with the Club through their business entities, proxies and families. a) A committee member is barred from conducting business transactions with the Club where he is deemed to have direct or indirect interest in the organization. b) A committee member who has relinquished his position shall be barred for 1 year thereafter from conducting business transactions with the club. (collectively, the “Resolutions”). The passing of the Resolutions would necessitate the amendment of the relevant Rules that relate to the Resolutions, namely Rules 34, 35 and 37. The proposed amendments to these Rules to bring them in line with the Resolutions passed will be tabled at the upcoming Annual General Meeting for consideration and approval by the Members. DISCIPLINARY MATTERS The Subcommittee continued to have to deal with disciplinary issues and cases that cropped up over the last year. I would like to take this opportunity to remind Members to familiarise themselves with the Club Rules and Bye-Laws so that they would not find themselves on the wrong side of it. CONCLUSION I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to my fellow Subcommittee Members as well as the General Manager Mr. Sean Boyle, BEM, and staff from the Membership Department for all their support and hard work in the past year.

019 has been an eventful year for the Social Subcommittee. The Social Subcommittee has two new Members, i.e. Darlene Kasten and Srikanth K.V. and we welcomed back returning Members George Abraham, Vikram Raman and Soma Devi who kindly offered to extend their contributions for another term. Together, we strategised to bring in an array of iconic events for the Club. One of the main highlights of the Club was creating a two-week celebration of Singapore’s Bicentennial from 11 – 26 October 2019 as we paid tribute to Singapore and the Club’s heritage. Through the strong support and participation of our Members, SCC raised $300,000 for SportCares, SCC’s adopted charity. We also organised the usual monthly quiz nights, Sunday Kids Corner that featured arts and crafts sessions and movie screenings monthly as well as our resident band for Saturday’s Buzz from the Bar at the Main Lounge for Members who enjoy listening to music. We have received many positive feedback about various events that were organised in the year. Watch out for us as we bring you more events in 2020!

SET Annual Bowls Challenge – For the first time, the three main local bowls playing clubs joined forces to set up this competition aptly named SET (taken from the first letter from each club – Singapore Cricket Club, Evergreen Lawn Bowls Club and Tanglin Club). We took the opportunity to host the inaugural event at SCC over a weekend in April. Though we finished second (tied on points with ELBC but lost out on shots difference), it was a great opportunity for the bowls playing community to come together to foster closer ties between ourselves. Almost all of the regular bowls players in Singapore participated in this event. We hope this relationship will be strengthened with each future edition. Friendlies with visiting clubs – It was nice to have four Australian clubs visit Singapore to play bowls. As our green was unavailable, we coordinated with Tanglin Club to play at their green. Such games give us a different perspective and an opportunity to test our skills against overseas players. Inter-Club Pairs League – Another strong showing in 2019, with the two SCC teams coming in second and third positions out of 10 teams that took part. National competitions – Out of the eight competitions played last year, our Members who played through the SCC entry came in the top three positions in seven of them. Great achievement. Keep it up folks. • Winners : Women’s triples • Runner-Up : 5 events • 3rd or joint 3rd : 3 events Lion City Cup – Bowls Singapore organised this event at the Kallang Bowling Green. A Men’s Pair and a Ladies’ Pair make up a Team. Bowls Singapore selected Melvin Tan and Shermeen Lim to play for one of the two Bowls Singapore team. That team progressed to the semi-final but lost out. SCC sent in two teams, one of which (comprising of Christian Huang, Wong Hui Kai, Amira Goh & Mary Lim) credibly progressed to the semi-final but lost out to the eventual winners from Malaysia.

Triangular with Kowloon Bowling Green Club (KBGC) and Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC) and Interport with KBGC – The event was scheduled to be held over the weekend of 6 to 8 December 2019 at KBGC in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, due to the continued unrest in Hong Kong in the second half of the year, KBGC shelved holding the event. SEA GAMES Five of our Members were selected to represent the Team Singapore in Lawn Bowls at the biennial competition: Josephine Lim, Amira Goh, Shermeen Lim, Matthew Ngui and Melvin Tan. There were four bowls events: • Men’s Triples and Men’s Fours; • Women’s Triples and Women’s Fours. Shermeen Lim and Amira Goh were team-mates in the Women’s Triples and they won a Gold medal. This was the first ever Team Gold medal for Singapore in lawn bowls in the SEA Games, and the first SEA Games Gold medal after 20 years, following Rosemary Tessensohn’s Gold medal in the Women’s Singles in the 1999 SEA Games. Matthew Ngui and Melvin Tan were team-mates in the Men’s Triples and they won a Bronze medal. We are proud of our Members for being selected to play in the National Team and for having put in much effort to practice hard and for having played well to raise the profile of the sport of bowls in Singapore. We hope this provides a platform for all concerned to take the sport to the next level. SPORTS AWARDS NIGHT Incredibly, the SCC Sportsman and the Sportswoman of the Year for 2019 were our Section Members Matthew Ngui and Shermeen Lim respectively. They were selected based on their sporting performances in 2018. Well done. We extend our appreciation to the General Committee for their continued support of the Section and for approving our request for a new turf to be laid, to the Management and Sports Department staff for their assistance all year round, to the F&B Department staff for their friendly service, to the Grounds-men for keeping the green well

maintained and ready for play, and to all others who have in one way or other rendered their support or assistance to this Section. Thank you. We look forward to more exciting times in 2020. Good Bowling.

I

am happy to report that 2018/2019 was a very successful year for the Bridge Section. Not only has membership increased to 85, but generally between 30 and 40 players now participate each week in the game of Duplicate Bridge.

REGULAR BRIDGE NIGHTS, BEGINNERS TABLES AND SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS Our regular duplicate bridge nights continue as usual on a Monday evening, either in the Victoria Room or in the Gilmour Room, where we have a larger space to accommodate more players. We have Members with a range of abilities, from highly-skilled and experienced players to beginners. Since early this year, whenever we play in the Gilmour Room, we have been setting aside one or two tables for the beginners to hone their skills. We hope that eventually they will feel confident enough to join the main game. This is part of our plan to develop the game and bring new and younger players into the Section. All will be made to feel welcome. In addition to the regular Monday nights, we have seven special celebrations each year to mark our national festivals, with dinner prior to the game, and modest prizes awarded to the top players.

SPORTS AWARDS NIGHT At the SCC Annual Sports Awards Night on 5 April 2019, committee member Edith Somogyi received the “Spirit of Sport” award. TOURNAMENTS Bridge Section was once again delighted to host the Annual SCC-Dr Modi Open Pairs Tournament on Saturday 31 August 2019, now in its third year. It was a full-house, with 62 participants, or 15 and 1/2 tables. The Tournament attracted a cross-section of participants from both the usual local Bridge Clubs as well as from the wider expatriate community, such as The Japan Club and the American Women’s Association. Generous cash prizes were awarded to the top players, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Dr Modi, and we hope his support will continue - permitting us to host this popular tournament again in 2020. We are most grateful! Every year the Bridge Section participates in the Premier Bridge League Tournament (PBL) which runs from March to June. In 2019, seven clubs participated, namely CSC, GWCC, Keppel Club, NUSS, SRC, SCC and TC. SCC hosted a round on Sunday, 7 April 2019. We also participated in the Quadrangle Games between Keppel, NUSS, SCC and SRC, which ran from March to November. SCC hosted a round on Sunday, 9 June 2019. In addition, we send representatives to various ad hoc “open pairs” tournaments which other clubs organise from time to time. Bridge is one of the many sports played in the annual POT Games between SCC and the Tanglin Club. TC hosted the event in October 2018, and SCC hosted in September 2019. Unfortunately we were outmatched by TC, but we remain ever-hopeful that one year SCC will prove to be a significant challenge for TC. Bridge Section did not take part in any overseas tournaments in 2019, although a few members arranged privately to attend the Kuching Congress in Kuching in July, and the Royal Lake Club Congress in KL in September. TRAINING Training is part of Bridge Section’s policy, and we run courses periodically. The Beginners’ Course, conducted by our instructor Carlton Parker, was held over four Saturdays in March 2019. It proved extremely popular with around 28 participants enrolling, and resulting in several participants joining Bridge Section.

So great was their enthusiasm that a follow-up Improvers’ Course was held over four Saturdays in May 2019. Olivia (Captain) now runs informal practice sessions in the Men’s Bar on Wednesday afternoons for anyone interested. In May, Bridge Section sponsored two members to undertake the Bridge Director’s Training Course conducted by the Singapore Contract Bridge Association (SCBA). It is a rigorous programme consisting of four theory sessions followed by a challenging practical exam. Not for the faint-hearted! I am happy to report that Mr. Perumal Ramanathan passed the course with flying colours. Perry had the opportunity to practise his newfound skills on three Mondays in July when Carl was away - with great success! Well done, Perry!

In October we introduced a once monthly theme night, held on every third Monday, where a certain number of hands is pre-dealt to present a specific bidding challenge. The Section Committee hopes to use this as an additional tool for upgrading our players skills to better prepare us for the inter club championships. WORDS OF THANKS As in previous years, I would like to thank most sincerely my team of committee members for volunteering their services, and for all their hard work. Special thanks to Carlton Parker, our Director and also Instructor without you, bridge nights and tournaments at SCC would not be the same! At the time of writing, we are also preparing to launch a new beginners’ course some time during February/March 2020, to be followed by an Improvers’ course if there is sufficient interest.

A big “thank you” to Janet, Eunicia and Becky and all the management team for supporting and guiding the Section Committee and helping to steer Bridge Section in the right direction!

SOCIAL EVENTS

Last but not least, many thanks to the lovely F&B bar staff for taking good care of us week after week!

We had two successful festive dinner & game events in the last quarter of the year, Deepavali on 4 November, and Christmas on the 16 December. In the new year 2020, we held the first of our special festive events of the current year, the CNY Dinner & Game on 3 February. At the event, we presented the Player of the Year awards:

I now hand over the baton to the new team!

t the end of another enriching and successful Cricket season, we can stand tall and feel proud of our achievements both in the Senior League as well as development of budding young cricketers. 2019 saw us play 94 League games across six Divisions with creditable results, not to speak of the numerous social games by the Saturday XI. 2019 was also a year when we launched a couple of new initiatives, re-invigorated others and set ourselves on a pathway that should not only catapult our teams to the top of the Singapore League in the coming years, but also see us contribute handsomely to Youth Development and furthering cricket at the grassroots level in the country. Of notable mention is that six of our Club cricketers represented Singapore in the T20 World cup qualifiers held in UAE. On the social side of things, key highlights were: • An informal evening with the legendary Henry Blofeld, erstwhile commentator for the BBC Test match special • Hosting the Zimbabwe National Cricket team to an evening of Dinner & Drinks.

SCA SENIOR LEAGUE It was a mixed bag for our teams in 2019. While the top three teams showed great consistency, the lower division teams have had to face some stiff challenges. Nevertheless, there has been excellent representation from our CYD and JSM groups into the lower divisions and this augurs well for the future. Highlights: • The Lions had a Top table finish in the league and were overall Runners-Up in the Premier Division. They also technically won the truncated Premier T20 which was abandoned after only a few games. • In Division 1, SCC Tigers and Cougars had a 2-3 finish. While the Tigers narrowly failed to cling on to their Premiership from last year, it was great to see two SCC teams finishing so high up in the same division. • Panthers in Division 4 made a strong push for promotion by coming in third place. • In the Masters’ League, the SCC Sphinxes had to face a reversal – missing out on the Title which they had made their own for the past four years! It was our first defeat in 25 games which should count as a phenomenal record. Kudos to Andy Beer and the Veterans • Some notable individual performances: • Sidhant Singh shone through brightly with 726 runs, 26 wickets and 22 catches, clearly earning the label of All-round player of the Club • Surya Azad was one of the most improved players with 579 runs which included a stellar innings of 132* • Pramodh Raja and Aahan Achar were the top wicket takers with 33 and 31 wickets respectively. • Peter Murray top scored for the club with a score of 160* • And Harry Taylor returned the best bowling figures for the club with 7 for 23

TOURS AND INTERPORTS A major highlight of the year was a repeat tour to the UK by a Club XI team comprising more than 20 SCC cricketers. The tour kicked off with a bang by a visit to Day Four of the Edgbaston Ashes Test which proved a feisty affair in the famous Hollies stand, with the SCC lion being represented appropriately. The tour included games at some of the most picturesque grounds in the English countryside - Penshurst Park CC, the oldest privatelyowned cricket pitch in the world where cricket has been played since 1724; Twickenham CC, Seven Oaks Vine CC, Mortimer West End CC, Cuckfield CC and Hampshire Hogs CC. Perfect temperate English conditions greeted the tourists wherever they went, not to mention the tremendous hospitality accorded by our hosts. The highlight of the tour was the game against our reciprocal club, Marylebone CC at High Wycombe - where SCC unfortunately came out second best to a very strong side, despite a belligerent century by Charlie Russell.

SPORT SECTIONS • CRICKET

Overall a wonderful tour with eight fixtures in seven different counties, a number of games going down to the wire and SCC coming out with three wins, three losses and two weather impacted ‘no results’. This year we travelled to Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Royal Selangor Club and Hong Kong Cricket Club for our annual interports. All trips were a great success on and off the field with a huge number of league and social players signing up for all three. We retained our trophies against RBSC and RSC but had to settle for second place against HKCC. KEY INITIATIVES The Section prides itself in leading the way when it comes to taking initiatives, implementing new processes, nurturing talent and contributing to the overall advancement of Sports at the Club. Ample testimony lies in the appointment of a full time Director of Cricket and in the expansion plans of the Cricket for Youth Development (CYD) program. Scott McKechnie’s appointment as Director has resulted in the development of a four-year business plan that investigates nearly every aspect of Cricket at SCC including organization of new tournaments, nurturing continuous talent and introduction of a Points system - all aimed at having a self-sustainable future for the Section/Club. Our CYD program has made significant strides in 2019 under the aegis of David Bennett & Peter Muruthi. Term 3 saw 148 participants in the program which is now supervised by two full-time and a few part-time coaches. The numbers for 2020 look extremely promising as the Academy stakes its claim to be the best-run Cricket Academy in South East Asia. CYD revenues have touched S$242,000 (an increase of almost S$100,000 from last year) with the future looking even brighter (projected participants for Term 3 2020 likely to be around 180). Outreach to schools, Junior cricket camps and overseas tours are other CYD initiatives on the anvil. The Section has also gone ‘High Tech’ with the introduction of TeamApp to streamline all communication among Members and an Online store for efficient processing of fees and payments. IN CONCLUSION It has been a stellar year for the Section in many ways. And the well laid-out plans give rise to greater aspirations for the next season. We all, however, need to play our own part in contributing to this progress. There are ample opportunities available – not the least of which is the impending SCC International Club Cricket Tournament – The SCC T10 Sling, between 21 – 23 August 2020. It would be remiss of me if I don’t extend my sincere gratitude to several people who work tirelessly for the Section: • To my fellow Committee Members who always put their best foot forward despite their busy schedules. Dene Border, Harry Taylor, James Kilbee, Arjun Kakar, David Bennett and Rohan Kapoor deserve all the credit for expertly managing all Section activities. • To all the league captains who managed their sides efficiently this year, not forgetting Rohit Shah, the Sat XI captain whose job is the toughest. • To our expert scorers - Lorraine Meyer, Tracy Jones, Sadiq Siraj and Peter Garlick! Many thanks for the countless hours you put in to ensure our on-field exploits are recorded accurately.

From top: Edgbaston, Day 4 England vs Australia Ashes – In the Hollies Stand; Tour game against MCC – High Wycombe; Tour game against Seven Oaks.

The Sports Department are integral to the smooth running of the Sections. Janet Ng, Wendy Foo and Thipa Mogan all deserve our highest gratitude for their continued assistance to the cricket section. The F&B team of Jasmine Tan, Chovin Ong, Louis Neubronner and Audrey Wang who do a stellar job of assisting us with all our catering needs, particularly for home matches.

• To Rasheed and his team for all their hard work to keep the pitch and grounds in pristine condition.

Suresh Kalpathy

• And to the Club Management, under the leadership of Sean Boyle.

e had a busy calendar in 2019 and saw participation of Section Members and guests from other Sections of the SCC. This included 10 darts nights, intersection tournament in August, Pot Games in October, culminating in our annual year party in December. The Darts Section had its tossing of the Yu Sheng (Lo Hei in Cantonese) on Thursday, 6 February 2020. Before the tossing began, each and every ingredient was added one by one in a specific order with wishes of good luck and prosperity. It is popularly believed that the higher your toss, the better your prospects and fortune in the year ahead. We had a good turn out and Charles and Louse were enthusiastically dressed for the occasion. Darts has established itself as a popular sport with all Members and attracts increasing numbers to our events. With a core of skilled and regular players, we look forward to building this talent pool to compete in local and regional games including overseas trips for Section Members. 019 was a pivotal year for the Club’s Football Section; one where we embraced an identity that most closely resembles our present-day Members, while leaving the door to our past entirely open.

For a lengthy period of years, the SCC First Team dominated Singapore’s competitive expatriate football, while also offering a stern test to the best that the local (non-expatriate) scene had to offer. But the challenges of maintaining those standards in the 2020s have become difficult for our Section’s demographic to meet. Today, our Section is proud to provide the chance to play social football with first-class equipment at sublime venues with memory-forging after-match experiences in the friendly confines of our historic property. Our Members revel in these conditions and want for little else in a footballing experience. There are of course plenty of younger, vibrant Members who can still compete with the best on the island. Our NFL team, managed by Amos Boon (nominated for NFL Coach of the Year), shows that we can perform competitively and with admiration (a fourth-placed finish in the League, while reaching the quarterfinals of the FA Cup and the final of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club 7s).

SPORT SECTIONS • FOOTBALL

While no longer competing in the Cosmopolitan League, the Club continues to compete as the SCC Tigers in the Saturday EFL Premiership. It has been a challenging season but Alvin Yeo, Bruce Loggie, Ian Roberts and their charges have our admiration in getting a team out every week, that sustains a competitive link for the Club, away from the NFL. However, if social football is now our DNA, the Lions, Thirds and Pads must all take great credit for being the chains that coil around our structure and most accurately determine our culture. In 25 years at this Club, I have never witnessed three teams whose players are so delighted to compete alongside each other. Add to that the Legends providing our more senior players from those squads with a chance to play at their own, steadier pace. While there is plentiful and necessary movement of players from one team to another, the joy that players clearly take from meeting up with their pals for a game of football, seems unrelenting. The Thirds, led by Ashish Manchharam and Justin Madhavan, toured Yokohama, Japan on the way to amassing 22 wins in 42 games, smashing in 84 goals in the process.

The Pads were captained by Joseph “Yossi” Azran Alemberg under the difficult conditions of living and working overseas for much of the year. Despite this, the Pads staged dramatic comebacks on the field and raised funds for causes close to the team’s collective heart. Once again they toured Phuket, with the beaming faces of orphaned children at the island’s Youth Football Home testament to that annual trip’s importance. With Ravi Krishnan’s Legends, every game is a cup final. Medals, trophies, man-of-the-match awards and aftermatch speeches are the Legends’ modus operandi. Ravi’s vast experience and network brings greats of the game to our Club, where even national players of great prominence make the Padang the highlight of their golden footballing years. The Lions, stage managed by Jeremy Lim, saw contributions from 38 different goalscorers in 2019, averaging more than three goals a game in their 46 matches, on their way to winning the Henrick Lorenz Cup and the Indian Association Cup. Tony Moore continues to generously strive for efficiency in his unofficial role Lions GM, not only from his teammates but also the committee that serves the Section; and it is

that body of men (soon to include women) to whom I now turn. My sincere thanks to Paul Paffett. The role of treasurer is the most technically demanding and requires great commitment and attention to detail. Paul has been a watchdog for us all, provides great counsel and above all has helped make the Section transparent, compliant and robust. Glyn Vince put his heart and soul into a report that was several months in the making and will be the bedrock of our Section in the years to come, if given a mandate by the General Committee. I can’t think of a more passionate Section man. Amos Boon knows the inner workings of Club football both at the SCC and in the wider, national game. He is a fine ambassador and while also running arguably the best 7s tournament in Asia, has been pivotal in establishing the junior football programme, powered by Chelsea FC. Alex Khan, Chris Godfrey, Dan Shepherd and Mark Mirosevic have all put in the hours this year, protecting our members’ right to play, housekeeping the running of the Section, communicating its data and innovations, aggressively challenging ideas and suggestions and helping this institution continue to be our happy place. Finally, let me also thank our pioneering women who are helping to lay a path for regular women’s football on the Padang. I hope we can tell you more about the strides they are making this time next year. Steve Dawson Football Section Convenor

019 was a year characterised by precision organisation by the Golf Section Committee under the able leadership of its Convenor, Chionh. It was a fun-filled year, packed with one or more events every month, both social and competitive. The Section Members will attest to the quality and quantity of the activities which were optimally designed and delivered. The highlights of the year under review are as follows: QUARTERLY MEDAL GAMES There was a total of three medal games in 2019 before the Annual Championship. This first quarterly medal game was held at Warren Golf CC on 9 January 2019 and it effectively kicked-off the golfing calendar year. The second quarterly medal was held over two days from 30-31 May 2019 in Malaysia at the Els Club. The third quarterly medal was held at Sembawang CC on 14 August 2019. ANNUAL INTER-CLUB MATCH WITH CHANGI GOLF CLUB: 26 JANUARY 2019 This long-standing fixture was eagerly anticipated and well participated by our Members because of the hospitality afforded by the Changi golfers, some of whom are also SCC Members. Changi GC won the match but the great food and copious flow of beer and whisky helped balm the loss!

019 is our most successful year to date. We outdid the previous bestyear performance of 2017 and lifted the SCC International 6’s Ladies Cup title. Our Men in order to keep up with the Ladies took the Dutch Wooden Shoe title. From the carnival side of things, we then continued our uncanny knack for doing the double and won both the Men’s and Ladies’ National Titles. We were due to do the same in the National Indoor, but only our Ladies won the title and the Men missed out and finished second. Our Ladies then capped off their season with a fine undefeated run in the Women’s Liga to win it yet again. Our younger ladies also played tremendously well to rebound from an opening weekend loss in the U21 Youth Liga for Girls and won every other game to claim the title. Our boys followed suit and also won the U21 Youth Liga for Boys undefeated. From the young to the experienced, we have been blessed with success. Our Masters men travelled to Jakarta and surprised many with their exceptional passing game and won the inaugural ISCI Masters title. They then returned and put in a dignified shift in the Pesta Sukan Masters Open to win that title too.

The tournament, which was held on 2 and 3 March last year at the Padang, once again received overwhelming responses from teams across the region. Our main Men’s team were out in the Cup quarterfinals and our Committee Team played in the Bowl Finals but were unfortunately beaten. Our Ladies team did us proud and won the Cup competition with the Committee team making it to the Plate semi-finals. Pesta Sukan Games (Replaces the National Games)

National Indoor Hockey League

In conjunction with Singapore’s National Day, ActiveSG organized the Pesta Sukan in August 2019. In the spirit of promoting friendly competition and fostering new friendships with other teams in the nation, the Section entered three teams in three categories. We proudly walked away with one Gold and one Silver medal from the Games.

The Section entered two teams into the annual SHF National Indoor Hockey League. The league took place over the weekends in June and July. Our Ladies defended their title for the third year running with the Men almost doing the double but were denied by a strong Eagles team. ANNUAL REPORT 2019

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Grooming of young players continues to be a focus of the Section, and we are pleased to announce that the integrated Hockey Academy has been continuing to grow in size and in popularity. We have brought in 17 Girls and 17 Boys who were talent-spotted by our coach. Of these, 15 are Singaporean. With the run of two titles in the U21 age group, we look well poised to do well in the coming years as these youths continue to represent SCC in the National U19 Junior League in 2020 including supplementing the First Team. SINGAPORE COACH MEDALLION Our coach, Kanan Packrisamy was awarded the Singapore Coach Medallion this year in the Community Coach category for his work rendered to our club. The synergy shared between our club and his company, True Blue Consultants, have delivered this prestigious award. We congratulate him and are delighted that SCC’s hockey prowess has been recognized at the national level across all sports. In even better news Kanan has joined the club as a Sports Member and we look forward to his outstanding contribution on the pitch. SCC SEVEN’S RUGBY PRESIDENT’S DASH CHALLENGE SOCIAL EVENTS

TOURS

We made nominations for all categories but unfortunately, we only received the Spirit of Sport award for Ken Forbes. We are looking forward to the next SCC Sports Awards wherein we believe we stand a strong chance of winning a number of awards as 2019 has been our best year yet (i.e. 10 titles).

The Section was represented by 34 Section Members at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club Hockey Festival. Our Ladies won the Bronze Medal in the main competition whilst our men were ousted in the quarterfinals.

Monthly Socials The Section’s monthly socials at the Padang have continued to be a real hit in the past year, with Members participating in (and watching) exciting hockey games, before settling down together to enjoy local delights and drinks together. Seniors Grass Hockey The Seniors Grass Hockey program has also been largely successful, with an increasing number of members participating in the few sessions of grass hockey between the seniors held during the year. We were unable to do more due to the National Day Parade preparations and the like. Inter-Section Bonding In terms of Inter-Section bonding, the Section socialized plenty this year, participating in the Intersection Football, Quiz, Darts, Lawn Bowls tournaments and Netball.

t has been a year of positivity, commitment and growth for the Netball Section. Led by our new Section Committee for 2019/2020, there has been a renewed sense of excitement for the game and what the Section can achieve. This year alone we have welcomed a number of new faces which has seen the Section grown to over 50 members, revamped off-season training and enjoyed our most triumphant year on the court to date. What has been most impressive is the commitment that our Section Members across a range of abilities have demonstrated which has translated into outstanding results in the National League! We have also had some incredible social events which has further bonded the Section Members together. 8TH ANNUAL SCC LEAGUE 2019 This year the Netball Section continued to run its successful off-season League from January to May and put forward two strong teams to compete. The aim of this League is to keep the Section Members engaged on the Court after and in the lead up to the National League. The SCC Hawks (our 1sts team) and SCC Eagles (our 2nds team), played in divisions 1 and 3 respectively and were incredibly strong throughout the season with the Hawks winning their division and the Eagles coming in second place. The SCC League contributed to an increase in participation from the players and allowed us to put four teams forward for the National League.

NATIONAL LEAGUE 2019 The National League ran between June - July, with our four teams playing in various divisions (Hawks - Div 2, Eagles - Div 5, Ospreys - Div 7, Kites - Div 8). It was extremely encouraging to see our teams showcase the SCC spirit and achieve outstanding results at all levels. After an unbeaten eight weeks, the SCC Hawks (our 1sts team) made it to the National League Division 2 playoffs and fought for a promotion to Division 1. While the Hawks put up an excellent fight and gained an early lead, they were ultimately unable to snatch victory, losing by only five goals. While this wasn’t the fairy-tale ending everyone was hoping for, it was brilliant to see so many Members of the Section supporting the Hawks on the day. The Eagles (our 2nds team) also had a fantastic finish to the National League, coming in second place in Division 5 by a mere goal. The Ospreys (our 3rds team) and Kites (our 4ths team) finished fourth and seventh respectively, clearly displaying that the SCC’s ability and talent stretches across all eight divisions in the National League. This is the first time the Section has ever entered four full teams. The stellar performances we have seen would not have been possible without the guidance and support of our wonderful coach Eric Lee who continues to motivate and inspire the Section to new heights. MISCELLANEOUS CARNIVALS In February, a mixed team represented the Section at the annual Daisy Tan carnival hosted by Netball Singapore. Despite making it into the second round of the competition, the team unfortunately succumbed to a strong ex-opens team and just missed out on a semi-finals berth. In March, a team of U23 players and a team of open women’s participated in the annual beach netball tournament and both teams qualified for the knockout stages (second round). Fierce competition in both categories saw both teams bow out of the competition just short of the semi-final rounds by the smallest of margins (five goals or less).

We also sent a combined team into the 2nd Bucks International Invitational tour tournament in April. Comprised of a mix of experience and youth, the team despite playing together for the first time achieved a very commendable fourth placing. In August, a team comprising of players from all four teams took part in the Deloitte Pesta Sukan carnival and played against experienced teams with national and super league players. The team was not fazed and put on a tremendous performance.

SPORT SECTIONS • NETBALL

In November, the Section also ran the annual SCC Schools’ Carnival. Junior athletes (13-17 years old) from schools and other clubs in Singapore participated in this carnival, increasing the profile of the Section as well as of the Club within the younger netball community. TOURS The annual Bangkok invitational tour took place in June. The touring team, SCC Flamingos, had a great outing in the first round. Missing out on a cup grand final berth by a mere point, the touring team eventually came back with the Bowl award. The after-party did not disappoint with our youngest member still joining in the dress-up festivities whilst being chaperoned by her mum. FINANCES With a steady stream of new Members, a rejuvenated social committee and a dedicated convenor, 2019 was a healthy year for the Section’s finances. As set out above, this year saw the Section hosting two leagues (the SCC pre- and post-Nationals Leagues) which generated the majority of our income. Most of this was invested back into both the Section and the Club more generally. In particular, the Section was able to heavily subsidise much of the social activities set out below together with the relevant tournament entry fees. SOCIALS The Section continued to keep things lively and 2019 saw no shortage of opportunities for our Members to come together off the court. Activities included wakeboarding, BBQ’s, quiz nights and brunches; whoever said being an athlete means no fun was very wrong!

As this year marked the Bi-Centennial for Singapore and to show our support to SportCares SG, the Club’s chosen organisation, one which we very much admire, we hosted a Quiz night fundraiser with profits going directly to SportCares! The support from other Sections for the evening was fantastic and it turns out our girls not only have skills on the court but also off, with one of our very own teams taking out the top prize (promise the quiz was not rigged!). Our fierce and competitive rivalry with our neighbouring teams in Singapore when playing and friendships off the court continued for another year and it is great to be able to welcome these girls (and guys!) into the Club for food, drinks and fun at our end-of-league socials hosted in the Gilmour Room. For a second year running, we rounded out our social year with a busy December hosting the JSM Carnival followed by our most favourite event, the annual Section Christmas brunch held in The Padang Restaurant. CLOSING After such an amazing year both on and off the court, the Netball Section is ready to climb to even greater heights in 2020 and with a new committee at the helm and lots of new players in the squad, there is a real sense of optimism for what the future holds. As always, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the SCC Sports Department, the SCC staff and GC without whom none of our successes would be possible.

fter the success of the 2017/2018 season – in which the Prems (1st XV) won the Singapore Rugby Union Premiership Cup for the first time in 21 years – the Rugby Section had a disappointing end to the 2018/2019 season. The Lions (3rd XV), Tankards (2nd XV) and Prems all went into the finals as favourites and then each proceeded to lose their semi-final. Our veterans team – the Growlers – also suffered from the semi-final curse and went down against the eventual winners Bucks Stags. In 2019, we did however achieve other successes and achievements – such as the introduction of a new Under 19s side, further growth of the SCC Rugby Academy and another great SCC International Rugby 7s. MENS – 1S

JSM Representative Bryan Lim

The 1st XV finished the 2018/19 with a semi-final loss and we will waste no more ink dwelling on that.

Social Secretary Jack Whiskin

The 2019/20 season is off to a much better start. Led by the familiar coaching team of Matthew Head and Suhaimi Amran, and new captain Declan Martens, our Prems are so far undefeated this season – with six wins from six matches – including a comprehensive win over last season’s winners Wanderers Prems

SCC Prems and Tankards

31-10. The boys have also been re-joined by our players from the Singapore National side and at the time of writing, signs are looking good for victory in the final on 7 March 2020. MENS – 2S The Tankards (2nd XV) have also had a strong start to the 2019/20 season under the new coaching set up of David Griffiths and Daryl Harding. The Tankards are in the same competition as the Prems and have faced predominantly first grade sides so far. Led by the dreadlocked breakdown warrior – Jeremy Bird, who was elevated from skippering the 3rd XV last season – the Tankards have narrowly lost to Bucks 1st XV (26-33) and Wanderers 1st XV (5-13), and have had big wins over Wanderers 2nd XV (24-13) and Bedok 2nd XV (59-12). With some of the more fancied opposition out of the way, the Tankards are all set for a strong finish to the season and are the bookmakers’ favourite to take out the Plate Final. MENS – 3S The Lions (3rd XV) also saw a leadership change this season, with last year’s captain Jeremy Bird handing the baton to the dual captains Shakeer Shakuro and Ian Gamble. The Lions have received an influx of new players from our brand new Under 19s side (more on that later) and have had a solid start to the Development League Season, currently sitting third on the ladder. Continuing the tradition of fielding players from the Growlers and JSMs coming up from the Academy, the Lions have a squad comprised of the club’s oldest and youngest players, and they will be a genuine threat come finals. GROWLERS With the festivities of the 10-year anniversary resigned to the past, Will Walker’s Growlers had another rollercoaster season. Continuing to gain more veterans – with a recent influx of newly 35-year old Section members adding to the ranks – the Growlers were hoping to go one step closer to winning the Muddy Penny Cup in 2019. Sadly this was not to be, and once again our Vets were beaten in the semifinal by the eventual winners Bucks RFC. The new season started off with a morale boosting trip to the Fat Boys Tens in Angeles City, the Philippines. Although there was good initial interest, the boys unfortunately managed to go with only a bare 10 players, but exceeded themselves by getting to the semi-final of the main competition – a great showing all things considered, and certainly an eye opening visit for those newly minted recruits.

NOMADS The Section’s touring side – the Nomads – have also been active with a win over the Hanoi Dragons in a sweltering encounter in northern Vietnam and a narrow loss to the KL Tigers in the Malaysian capital. However, 2020 is the big year with the first major tour in years scheduled to travel to the Pacific Northwest. With fixtures against the Vancouver Rowing Club and the Seattle Saracens – and socializing with our friends from the Royal Canadian Navy – the Adam Waiseled Nomads are looking forward to being ambassadors for the SCC and to spread the traditions we hold dear: heritage, sportsmanship and camaraderie. UNDER 19S For the first time the Section fielded a team in the Singapore Rugby Union Under 19s competition. Coached by Section stalwarts Declan Martens and Jay-Hykel Jalani, and managed by former Convenor Marc Lansonneur, our newest side comprised a mixture of existing JSMs and new recruits from the Academy. Training started at the end of June 2019 and competition for starting spots was immediately intense. The side made it to the League Final in September, but unfortunately went down 7-21 to a more experienced Bucks side. However, the rugby did not end there for many of our under 19s players; six were selected for National duties and played for Singapore in the Asia Rugby U19 Men’s Championship 2019 in Taiwan. A further eight players then continued to the SCC’s men’s competition, playing across the Prems, Tankards and Lions, making the under 19s a terrific feeder side bridging the Section and the Academy. SCC ACADEMY The SCC Rugby Academy continues to grow from strength to strength and, with well over 500 boys and girls, is firmly established as one of the biggest and most successful junior rugby clubs in South East Asia. The Academy operates a junior Rugby program for boys and girls from age three to 18 years and a Touch Rugby program for girls aged six to 18 years. Beyond the age of 18, players are then encouraged to become JSMs and play Rugby / Touch Rugby for the SCC – making the SCC the only club in Singapore with this kind of fully integrated sports program and it’s great to see the Academy youngsters graduating into the senior ranks and becoming JSMs representing the Section. In 2019, the Academy continued to enjoy huge success in the Junior Rugby Clubs Singapore (JRCS) Rugby and Touch leagues, ANNUAL REPORT 2019

participating in their respective grand finals weekends in all but one age group. The Academy also participated in numerous competitions both at home and overseas (including tours to Hong Kong, Malaysia and Perth) with numerous notable successes, including the KL Tigers Tournament where the Academy again won several age groups, overcoming some stiff competition from clubs from Hong Kong, Malaysia and elsewhere in the region. A highlight and much anticipated fixture of the Singapore junior rugby calendar has become the SCC Rugby Academy 7s and Touch Tournament, held on the weekend before the SCC International Rugby 7s with the Cup Finals being played on the SCC 7s weekend. In 2019 the Academy achieved huge success with the Black and Gold running out in finals for 16 (out of 17) age categories. SCC Rugby Academy continued to partner with SportCares, a charity supported by Sport Singapore, which seeks to improve the lives of the less fortunate through sport. In 2019 the sport of Wheelchair Rugby benefited from charitable donations to support the purchase of wheelchairs and to host an International fixture at the SCC. SCC TOUCH RUGBY The SCC Touch Rugby program has also continued to go from strength to strength under the guidance of Rebekah Anderson and Terry Noë – with the Untouchables (mixed touch squad) coming a very credible second in their league and the SCC Lionesses (ladies team) winning their league and being promoted! SCC 7S The 2019 sevens season was another huge success for the SCC, again driven by coach Suhaimi Amran. The SCC 7s squad came third in the first round of the SRU Club 7s, before winning the second round. They also held their own against semi-professional sides from Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Japan in the 2019 SCC International Rugby 7s competition where they reached the Cup Quarterfinals. Several of our players – led by captain Declan Martens – also played in the National 7s side, which had a heartbreaking 14-17 loss to Malaysia in the final of the Asia Rugby Men’s Sevens Trophy. Four SCC players were then selected for the Singapore 7s SEA Games squad, who had a fourth place finish narrowly missing out of a bronze medal. The SCC was also well represented in the Singapore National side, which after beating the hosts (Chinese Taipei) on 1 June 2019, lost 21-29 to the Philippines in the Asia Rugby Championship Division 1 final.

SCC INTERNATIONAL RUGBY 7S TOURNAMENT The 72nd instalment of the SCC International Rugby 7s had a lot to live up to, coming off the back of a fantastic Rugby World Cup in Japan. It did not disappoint. The boys from Fiji – Daveta – went back to back and retained the Ablitt Cup over Auckland’s Ponsonby Rugby Club in an absolute thriller of a final. Ponsonby was in control early but the experienced Daveta side emerged as two point winners. The tournament – broadcast live for the first time in its history – was another huge success. Special thanks to Chairman Raj Sankaran and the rest of the Organising Committee for another superb tournament. SIGN OFF After three hugely successful years at the helm, Sam Sharpe has hung up the boots as Convenor of the Section. A new Committee was sworn in at the Rugby Section AGM on 15 May 2019. With a mixture of continuity and change, the newly elected Committee saw myself take over from Sam as Convenor, and James Drudy and Jack Whiskin join as our new Treasurer and Social Secretary respectively. Murray Wyllie stayed on as Club Captain, Jeremy Bird continued as Secretary and Bryan Lim as JSM Representative (and thankfully Sam graciously stayed on in his new role as Emeritus Convenor!).

SECTION - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

This year, we continued with the initiatives we launched last year to continue to develop squash skills within our Section:

A new Section Committee was elected during the AGM. In addition, as part of building the new leadership of the Section, we have drafted in Reuben and Zi Hang as Vice Captains for the Men’s Team and Jodee as Vice Captain for the Women’s Team. They will be groomed to take on the Captain roles in the coming years.

• Under the supervision of Vivian, we continued to run the Adult training program for most part of the year. This continues to be well attended helping with physical conditioning and on court ability of our players. This has helped us being more competitive in some of the grades during this year’s league. • Feeder program to build junior squash talent – This initiative that was launched last year continued to run successfully this year. We have five juniors signed up for each 10-week block. COURTS In December 2019, the floors were sanded down and the walls were patched, cleaned and painted. We have also now installed adjustable tins to be aligned with international standard requirements. This will now allow us to host higher grade competitive events. SPIRIT OF SPORTS Rahul Khare for his relentless work and commitment to the Ssection. He has been instrumental in the phenomenal success of us hosting the Cosmo league last year. He has also put in tremendous effort in helping us prepare for this year’s NSL and has worked extensively across various grades in ensuring that we were well set for a good season. Playing across two grades, he has played the highest individual games by any player this season, 31 games!

The Section finances are in decent shape. We agreed to work on recruiting more Sports Members and increase overall Section membership. After the AGM, we held our End-of-League dinner, which was well attended. The Squash Section Committee would like to thank the Sports Department, especially Janet, Thipa, the Games Control Board and the General Committee who have been very supportive of us through the course of the last 12 months

019 ended with the holding of the Tennis Annual General Meeting and the election of the new Tennis Section Committee. The 2019 Committee members were re-elected, and we also welcomed two new Section Committee Members, Rehmat and Eugene, to help the Committee make 2020 another successful year. 2019 CHINGAY PARADE In February 2019, SCC had the opportunity to participate in the 2019 Chingay Parade held at the Singapore F1 Pit lane. The SCC contingent consisted of Members from different SCC Sections. Tennis was the largest participantcontributing Section and was represented by Soenke, Darren, Martin, Vishal, Michael and Nancy; it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience playing tennis in front of such a large crowd and dancing to Chingay rhythms. INTERCLUB SINGLES LEAGUE In March and April, SCC Tennis participated in the Singapore Tennis Association (STA) organised Interclub Singles League. We send four Men’s and one Ladies’ team. Our Men’s teams fought hard and managed to secure a respectable third place in the B division. Unfortunately, the semi-finals were played over the Easter break which meant that quite a number of our players were away! On the Ladies’ side, it was business as usual with the Ladies A team coming home with the title. They dominated throughout the season and made the Club proud with another trophy added to their growing cabinet.

TENNIS TOUR TO RBSC From 26-28 April, the Tennis Committee organised a tennis tour to visit our long-time reciprocal sports club in Bangkok, the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC) - a very fine and prestigious club in the heart of Bangkok. To foster and expand our friendship over the coming years, SCC created the Tennis Challenge Trophy for the winning team to keep and for future matches to play for. 10 players from our Men’s, Ladies’ and Social teams joined the tour and the matches were competitive with both sides fighting tooth and nail to emerge victorious. However, after a few hours of toil in the sun, on very fine real grass courts, RBSC won the final match to result in a tie. Happy with the fairness of the result, both sides retired for a round of beers and some unwinding. For 2020, please look out for our announcement emails as we are planning another tour this year. STA INTER CLUB DOUBLES KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENT In August, the STA Inter Club Doubles Knockout tournament took place again and SCC sent their Men’s and Ladies teams to participate in the Kliny Cup (Men’s “A” Grade), the Chua Cup (Men’s “B” Grad), the Chan Ah Kow Cup (Men’s “C” & “D” Grades) as well as the Martha Young Cup for Ladies. The various SCC Tennis Men’s team fought hard, but the teams were weakened by injuries and players travelling overseas. It was up to the Ladies’ team and they are known to deliver. With a convincing win in the STA Singles league earlier this year, the SCC Ladies fielded one of their youngest teams ever in the Martha Young Cup competition. But Doubles is different, and it is a game that requires more experience and wisdom than pure athleticism like singles does. The average age of our Ladies team was 17 with our youngest star at 13! This demonstrates that SCC Tennis has become a home for successful junior tennis players. In the second round, the ladies team beat Oldham Tennis Club who fielded several national players. In the finals, we played against our strongest competitor SANWA, which team is made up of women who were formerly top 20 in Japan. The line-up wasn’t really in our favour, but our girls fought to tie it 1-all going into the 3rd tie. The

3rd tie was probably the best Ladies’ doubles match we have seen in a few years in Singapore with our juniors Clare Cheng and Joelle Goh stunning us with their bravery. Ultimately experience won out, but just barely! SCC came in runners up, but the entire tournament had stiff competition and the final was so excruciatingly close that we felt like winners anyway. STA INTERCLUB DOUBLES LEAGUE September and October were all about the STA Interclub Doubles League for the Section with a full month of action and no less than five teams representing the Club. While the hazy weather made scheduling matches a little tricky, our players came out in full force to represent the Club in the Men’s A - D divisions and the Ladies A division. There was some good tennis all around and it was heartening to see so many of our Section Members being passionate about the Club and stepping forward to represent it. In the Ladies A division, the SCC Ladies came close to matching their 2017 title winning performance, but narrowly missed out and finished in 2nd place. In the championship decider, they lost a nail bitter to the British Club 2-1. In the Men’s A division, SCC came within a whisker of winning its first title in nearly a decade! After winning its first five matches against some top-quality opposition, SCC went down fighting to SICC in its final match 2-1. Like the ladies, the Men’s A team fielded some topnotch juniors who produced some outstanding wins against more established opponents. The Men’s B team performed well too and reached the final of their division before falling 2-1 to Keppel Club. The final rubber was a high-quality doubles match in which Tristan and Romain battled hard but ultimately went down 6-3 7-5. Romain showed nerves of steel with three consecutive match points saved with some bullet serves! Honorable mentions go out to the Men’s C and D teams who each had memorable wins but failed to get out of their groups.

The Tennis Section has also seen a number of Junior Sports Members (JSM) join us in the last few months on both the Men’s and Ladies’ sides. Most of these youngsters are playing at a very high level and they have managed to put together some stellar performances in the national tournaments that the Section can be proud of. Of note is Joshua Cheng (13 years old) who reached the recent National doubles tournament final with a fellow incoming JSM, Aneish Sawney, and his sister Clare Cheng who featured in the Junior Fed Cup for Singapore which was held in Sri Lanka. Brendan Hendrata (another 13-yearold) reached the U16 National Singles Tournament final. The future certainly bodes well for the Section! In November, the Tennis Section celebrated the Men´s and Ladies team successes of the year by throwing a season ending party. We had more than 30 players across the Men’s and Ladies’ teams attend the celebrations which featured ‘beach’ soft ball tennis on the Padang and some hard-hitting social matches across the four courts. We also had dinner and drinks and an awards night to sum up the evening. The awards featured the best players for each of the teams, as well as prizes for specific achievements attained by the players in the course of the year. The final award was to commemorate Mert’s dedication to the sport and the Section and was aptly named the Rodger Federer award for continuous excellence. The only hitch was that Mert dislikes

Federer with a passion and was torn between showcasing and binning the award. He ended up accepting it with a big cheeky grin! Further, the Tennis Section held the inaugural SCC’s Laver + Cup in end November. 18 SCC players represented their countries and formed the Team Europe and Team World. Three rounds of competitive doubles and mixed were played. At the end, there was no doubt about the winner: Team World beat Team Europe 12 : 5 and will be engraved as the first winner on the prestigious trophy. In 2019, we had to give up our tennis courts for quite some time for the National Day Parade and the F1 race. Despite not having played many competitive matches on our home ground we had a fantastic year with great wins for Ladies and Men teams. In November we were able to re-open the newly surfaced tennis courts. We also have new nettings making the courts even safer and were also able to slightly enlarge the courts, providing more space in the back. Please come down and check out the new tennis courts.

s the Club’s newest Section, the 150 members of The Wine Circle have plenty of opportunity to grow in their knowledge and appreciation of wine through events organized both by SCC and the Wine Circle.

In 2019, our Members have continued to enjoy participating in the monthly wine dinners (SCC Wine and Gourmet Series) organized by SCC. Some of the activities arranged exclusively for our Wine Circle Members in 2019 have included the following: VIGNANO WINERY – TUSCAN WINE TASTING Vignano is a bio-organic winery as well as DOCG certified to produce Chianti wines. Wine Circle members learned of the ecological awareness that is an integrated part of the farming and wine making process at Vignano. Wines tasted included: • Primavolta, a white blend of 50% Viognier and 50% Petit Manseng • L’Unico 2014 Toscana DOCG, a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Malvasia Nera

Our first event of the year (to be held after submission of this report) will be a Spanish Wine Masterclass. It sold out within a week, and we look forward to hearing the feedback of our Wine Circle Members on the food and wine pairings, as well as who learns the most on the day – to be revealed by the result of the on-the-spot quiz. We are excited to take the Wine Circle to the next level in 2020, with more education events and regular wine tastings for our Members. We would love to hear more ideas from you on what else you would like to see this 2020 for our wine events, keeping it fun for all.
