It is with great pleasure that I welcome everyone to our 2017 Annual Golf tournament. The tournament, since its debut in 1984, has continued to attract participation from the other 12 sports sections of the Club and engages members with such camaraderie both on and off the green. This is the spirit that we strive to achieve in the Club towards becoming the premier sports and social Club in the region. I would like to thank the Golf Section, under the convenorship of Mr Chion Chye Hion, and the committee for organising this tournament. Thanks also to our ‘Hole-in-One’ sponsors, our other sponsors and supporters for their invaluable support. I wish all participants a great game of golf and happy merry making at the 19th hole! And remember the wise words of Bobby Jones, ‘Competitive golf is played mainly on a five and half inch course, the space between your ears.’ So, play the shot you know you can, not the one you think you can and have lots of fun. One of you will finish the day as the new SCC Golf Champion for 2017, following in the footsteps of Allan Muir (2015) and Eric Teoh (2014). My thanks go to the organising committee who has raised substantial sponsorship including two hole-in-one prizes. It promises to be a great championship and I’m sorry that I shall miss it. MESSAGES
The golf section holds some 16 golfing and social activities each year. However, the one event that defines the term of a section committee has always been the Annual Championship. Not only will the 2017 champion golfer of the Club be determined, but a wide swath of the club’s golfing community will gather for a day of good camaraderie and fun. At the least, we hope that the adage ‘a bad day at the golf course still beats a good day in the office’, holds true. For this event to come about, and hopefully live up to your expectations, I am most thankful to Victor Olsen and his organising committee for the meticulous planning that they have done since April and the hard work of executing it since then. To all the generous sponsors and donors, many of whom have been with the event for years, we say a big thank you, and hope you find value in it to be with us in the years to come. Camaraderie On and Off the Green
The SCC Golf Section was established in 1984 by PCN Hayes with R. Schoon as Captain. The inaugural SCC Annual Championship 1984 was won by Douglas Ooi who still wears the crown as the only Champion to win the SCC Golf annual championship three times; 1985, 1987 and 1988.
“We developed a very good series of inter-port games with our Malaysian friends at the Royal Selangor Club, Kluang Country Club and an annual event with Royal Johor Club. The fellowship between the golfers of all clubs was something that we truly enjoyed when we met at home and away.” - David Yim
Chris Pillay took over as Convenor from 1995 through 1988. Chris teamed up with Thomas Wang, as Captain. Thomas took over as Convenor in 1989. In six years, this dynamic duo performed golf magic SCC style and placed the SCC Golf Section on a solid foundation.
From 2010 through 2012, Lim Khoon became Convenor and with Captain Allan Muir, they blazed away to become a founding member and winner of the inaugural Inter Social Golf Clubs Golf Tournament.
A N Balagopal, Winston Koh and David Hodges took the golf section to a new level from 1991 through 1995. Monthly golf games became Par for the Course. Inter port games against Kluang Country Club and Royal Selangor Club as well as Interclub matches against Changi Golf Club, Tanglin Club and the Singapore Recreation Club became regular fixtures on the SCC annual golf calendar. Victor Olsen took over as Convenor from 1996 through 2002 and was blessed with super Committees and Captains Andrew Chow, Stanley Ang, Patrick Perera, Jan Pieter Prins and Francis Wong. SAFRA and the Hollandse Club joined our interclub stable and we participated in a major multi-sports tour to Yokohama Athletic & Country Club. Our team “SCC Sharp Shooters” led by Stanley Ang and Francis Wong, held the rare distinction of whacking the very formidable SAFRA Golf team on their home SAFRA course and we were unbeaten in most if not all interclub and inter port golf competitions. The feather in our cap was organising SCC 150th Anniversary Charity Golf in 2002. We raised about $250,000 for charity. Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong was Guest of Honour and Foreign Minister Prof. S. Jayakumar was our special guest. Wee Jim Hock took over as Convenor with David Yim as Captain from 2003 through 2006. Here are some notable quotes from our stalwarts: “Engaging the GCB for inter port subsidy citing golf section costs the club nil maintenance etc, unlike other sections and seeking commercial support financially or otherwise for monthly & annual events.” - Wee Jim Hock David Yim took over the baton from 2007 to 2008 with Lim Khoon as Captain.
“The other founding clubs were Singapore Recreation Club and Chinese Swimming Club. The tournament was open to social clubs with no golf courses. Seven clubs took part in the inaugural tournament, which was held over 4 separate games in the course of a year. Most importantly, we even managed to win the inaugural tournament.” - Lim Khoon 2013 Convenor Jurgen Martiens with Captain Peter Salt continued the good work of their predecessors. In 2014 the ever popular Richard Loo took over as Convenor and with Captains Peter Salt and Chionh Chye Hion, they organised many memorable golf outings and overseas tours which members still talk about today. Richard’s forte in Food & Beverage, made all golf section games great evenings of golf camaraderie. There were no losers. Everyone was a Winner. Chionh Chye Hion took over as Convenor in 2016 and hit the ground running. In the short space of ten months to date, Chionh with Captain Alvin Khoo and his Committee organized one golf game every month including two mini tours to Thailand and Indonesia respectively and a forthcoming major tour to Perth from 10th to 16th September 2017. A hard act to follow. Generous sponsors and friends of the SCC Golf Section together with fantastic support from our Golf Section Members always made our annual Christmas Golf Game, Ang Pow Game and our SCC GOLF ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP outstanding events to remember. - Nostalgic Recollections by Victor Olsen
