Wines OF THE MONTH January / February Trouillard, La Cuvée Elexium Champagne

Forrest’s St Laurent Marlborough

A blend champagne of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier andChardonnay. It has a sparkling glow and lightness with a nice touch of citrus and white fruit aromas, an epitome of harmony. Recommend to pair it with smoked salmon, chicken, white fruits or sorbet.

Originally from France, it’s a Pinot Noir cross possibly with Carignan, producing dark coloured small berries with smooth silky tannins and sweet cherry aromas.

$95.00 per bottle Les Vignerons du Roy René “Opale d’Un Roy” Rosé 2016 Brilliant pale pink. Expressive, intensely fruity, crisp nose. The palate is both floral and fruity, fresh and thirst-quenching with a long, intense aftertaste. A deliciously drinkable wine served well-chilled on a glorious summer’s day.

$52.00 per bottle Forrest Gewürztraminer A subtle nose of beautiful fresh floral rose and lemon/lime aromas with a touch of lychees and cinnamon. This is a delicate wine with flavours of baked apples and Turkish delight on the spicy palate. The wine has good length with a dry finish. $55.00 per bottle

37TH ANNUAL CHIVAS REGAL BALUT INTERPORT The SCC Balut Section sent a group of 24 Baluteers plus 4 supporters to Kuching to participate in the 37th Annual Chivas Regal Balut Interport held at the Sarawak Club November 18th. This was a magnificent event which enabled some 150 participants from Singapore and Malaysia to do battle over 8 fiercely competitive rounds. Our hosts, led by Kok Lee and Olivia Tan did a wonderful job ensuring we were all fed and Scotchwatered throughout the event which began on the Friday evening and continued throughout Sunday. All were welcomed by colourful dancers from the local Dayak tribe who thankfully concluded none of our heads were worth taking. Congratulations to Yvonne Pereira for leading SRC to victory, yet another Singapore success following NUSS’s achievement the previous year. SCC players were certainly not left ‘empty-handed’ as Yeoh Foo Yong scooped the “big pool”!

Though we had 28 participants, the room was comfortably full and all 6 rounds were celebrated with just the right level of near-rowdiness and shrieks of laughter. Captain Raj Kumar had the highest total and secured, yet again, the coveted bottle of Chivas. We won’t mention that Tony Richardson achieved the lowest total and the mini bottle of Scotch!

ASIA BOWLS Led by SCC Member and Team Manager Rodger Kimpton, three SCC bowlers were part of a successful Singapore team at the 12th Asian Lawn Bowls Championships held in New Delhi, India last October. Arguably Singapore’s best showing at this tournament, Shermeen Lim, SCC’s Sportswomen of the Year, came home with two Silvers in the Singles and Pairs event (with Tammy Tham), coming in second best to Malaysia in both finals. Amira Goh, who has made a return to the national squad after a sixteen-year haitus, capped her wonderful year off with a bronze medal in the Women’s Fours. Bowls Section Captain, Melvin Tan, was also part of the Men’s quartet that snatched the Gold medal away from hosts, India, right under their noses in the last end of the match. Trailing 0-10, they found their initial going tough but showed their mettle by slowly closing the margin before edging their opponents on their backyard. Well done Team Singapore! We hope their recent showing would be enough to secure them a place in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

SCC DRAWN PAIRS AND YEAR-END CLOSING DINNER 25th November was the finals of the 2017 SCC Drawn Pairs and a good crowd gathered on the Verandah to watch the highly anticipated Cup match between Melvin and Srini, against Mary and Purush. In the Plate final, Ming Li and Bob were up against Amira and TQ Lim. Halfway through the game, the heavens poured and in no time, the Green looked no different from a pool and everyone took cover under the Clubhouse. Games were no longer playable and they had to be postponed to the next day. Alas, we saw some respite from the weather on Sunday; Mary and Purush stayed strong to win the Cup trophy while Ming Li and Bob won the Plate. Congratulations to all the winners and participants!

The rain though, was not enough to dampen the spirits of our Bowls Section members where forty of us turned up for our closing dinner to mark the end of a very successful bowling season. The food as usual was great and the Victoria Room was full of chatter and laughter which got louder as more alcohol was consumed. The Green is now closed but members are looking forward to the Section tour of Kuala Lumpur in the first week of December.

A NEW BEGINNING The new committee has been in action, making plans for this year and next. For a start the much awaited side tables for drinks and snacks have arrived. The eight bridge tables, compact and light, are currently in use and much appreciated for the convenience they provide. Thanks are due to the SCC’s F&B Section.

The Deepavali game and dinner held on the 23rd of October was a success. Some of the members came in colourful ethnic wear. It was a full house with eight tables and the beginner players had a table of their own. The highlight of the evening was the Goan Fish dish which went down very well. F&B vouchers were given to the winning pairs of the evening: North/South Trevor and Jai Chapman, East West Judy Hunt and Richard Holloway. The winners who obtained nearly 50% were Susan and Michael Milford. Four pairs from the Section also participated in the SRC Open Pairs Event.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

Susan and Michael Milford with Olivia

Judy Hunt and Richard Holloway with Olivia

The Christmas event, the last for the year, will be held on Monday, 4 December. The menu has been finalized and the trophies have been ordered. In addition F&B vouchers will be given to the Best Champion Pair of the year, Best Individual Player of the year and Best North South/East West pairs of the evening.

LOOKING FORWARD Having met twice after the AGM, the committee has already decided on the dates for 2018 Section special events, while the quarterly calendar of events involving other Clubs will be planned in early 2018, subject to the announcements from the other Clubs. Plans are in the pipeline for Bridge lessons and for participation in the regional Bridge tournaments. In all, it has been a busy time for the new committee and 2018 will see the committee even more in action. The Section wishes a happy, healthy and prosperous 2018 to all SCC members.

The Tigers impressed in sprinting to the title with 2 games in hand! From 16 games, the Tigers amassed 43pts, 14 Wins, 1 draw, 1 loss, scored 66 goals - more than any other team in the league - and conceded just 13 goals - the lowest amount of any team!

The team, managed by Yossi and Etienne, was heavily built on the SCC youth academy players aged 14-17 with a few mature and experienced players such as Kike, Liam, Jahan, Yossi and Etienne making up an all-rounded, balanced and experienced team with the speed and stamina of the young players.

The SCC Tigers are the “Barca B” of the SCC Firsts being a feeder team to nurture young players to join the first team as well as 1st Team players returning from injuries in preparation to participate in the prestigious Cosmo League. This season have seen a few young players growing from the SCC youth academy for the past 2 Seasons, under Owen and Sam Balls’ management. Having also excelled in leadership on and off the field, these 4 are now regulars in the 1st team calls for Saturday

SCC PADANTIQUES PHUKET TOUR 2017 - HENRIK LORENZ MEMORIAL CHAMPIONS The 2017 Henrik Lorenz Memorial Championship has been a very special tour for the SCC PADANTIQUES for many reasons, but primarily for our immense commitment to the YFH (Youth Football Home) in Phuket. In 2005 Henrik Lorenz, whom represented both Singapore Cricket Club and Hong Kong Football Club, had a dream to build an orphanage in Phuket Thailand to take in local orphans and destitute children. The dream was to coach them football and the opportunity to be well educated too. Henrik is the founding trustee of the Foundation. Sadly, Henrik passed away in his sleep during a flight to Australia in December 2006.

Our aim is to establish a loving home for orphaned and destitute children. The children receive comprehensive education at good local schools. They also enjoy daily coaching and training from fully qualified coaches in the game of football.

equipment, English classes, IT classes and buses to and from games and classes. The recent Victorian Vodka event kindly supported by the SCC arranged by Peter Schott rose over S$3000 towards the YFH – this will now become an annual event.

The Youth Football Home is built on 8 rai of land in the town of Thalang (about 150 metres from Wat Muang Komaraphat) on Phuket Island consisting originally of a dormitory home for 32 boys, a residential building for staff and a full size football field plus training areas. Construction began in October 2005. The dormitory and staff house were built and furnished by the beginning of May, 2006. The football field and the training areas were formed 4 months later.

The PADS travel to Phuket every year to spend invaluable time with the kids, taking them to the beach, arranging sports days and trips to their favourite – KFC!! The experience is both wonderful and very humbling and certainly grounds us all when you spend this time with our beloved children. We also play our arch rivals Hong Kong Football Club for the Henrik Lorenz Memorial Trophy every year in front of the attending children. This year we are most happy to announce that Singapore won 2-0 against HKFC!!

In April 2014 the construction was completed for a second twin dormitory home building next to the first building as the Youth Football Home expanded to include 32 girls. The first group of 9 boys from Bangkok and the Northern provinces arrived at the Home on the 11th of May, 2006, and were enrolled at the Thalangpranangsang Primary School in time to attend the first day of the new school year. Today we have two full houses of boys and girls attending Thalangpranangsang Primary School and Thalang Secondary School. Youth Football Home has a full complement of qualified staff to look after the children. Under the supervision of a Thai Lady Guardian as Wardress the staff includes 2 nannies, a cook and cleaning, security and ground personnel. We have a qualified football coach from Europe as the sports manager who looks after the children’s training and development in football. In addition, British and German Ex-International footballers are periodically visiting the Youth Football Home and conducting coaching sessions with our children. The SCC Padantiques (The PADS) have taken this charity to their hearts and continue the dream of the children achieving great heights both on and off the field. This dream has been developed by Peter Schott driving the thoughts, dreams and ideas required by The PADS to give continuous support to this great cause. Various money raising concepts have been achieved over the years in being able to pay for the children’s

On tour this year we took the children to KFC where we spent the evening having fun and sharing invaluable time with all the children. This is a special event that the children always look forward to and was shared with our friends from HKFC. After the match on Saturday the children presented a special evening of entertainment with various dances both traditional and modern and the children had great pleasure in presenting to us. Later they served us a splendid local Thai dinner of chicken, fresh fish crocodile and vegetables If anybody would like to further support his great charity please contact the SCC PADS either Peter Scott or Glyn Vince (Captain) to learn more about this great cause.

2017 IN REVIEW THE GOLDEN 9 –SCC HOCKEY SECTION ACHIEVES BEST SEASON RECORD The 2017 season was thrust upon SCC Hockey in quickfire fashion with the National Junior League hitting off in the first week of January. With the 2016 season ending a shade shy of December, pre-season in the holiday mood littered month was always going to be testing. With the mantra of “no rest for the wicked” well in tow, SCC Hockey clicked into gear.

With only one title to show for what was a rebuilding year for SCC Hockey, 2016 was not to be forgotten but anchored in our memory as a mother of all launchpads for many a future success. Despite the self-inflicted pressure of achieving success on the shoulders of the section committee and the coaching team, SCC Hockey laid the foundations of what promises to be a very promising and exciting years of hockey ahead. The key shift of recruiting players who are between 13 to 16 told the real story in the junior league. The girls found the going tough in NJL1 but produced a few players who the Ladies 1st team would use in the National Women’s League 1. The Junior boys however had a less tumultuous season. Winning all their matches and securing the NJL3 title, the boys closed out the season undefeated drawing the final match to be denied an otherwise perfect season. Taking their place in NJL2 in 2018 they have designs to return to the cream of the crop in NJL1 in 2019. With the first title out of the way, equalling last season’s so called haul, SCC hockey went in search for a long-awaited success in our very own SCC International Sixes. A hockey tournament which has endeared itself to the world of hockey saw both our Men’s and Ladies’ 1s glide through the group stage and knock out all comers in the 2nd round onwards. Ladies were drawn against double defending champions Pink Ladies in the semis and put on a show worthy of winning the title in the last four and claimed a famous 2-0 win thanks to a Rhian Frizler brace. They took the same form to the final where they despatched first time finalist Tokyo Mix 2-1 after trailing 0-1 to win their maiden Sixes crown at the hallowed Padang now blessed by tropical showers. The men took inspiration from the ladies and came up against Yokohama, another Japanese team which boasted few of Singapore’s best talents, who usually turn out for Jansenites in the top flight. Ben Rogers starred as SCC scored an emphatic Golden goal to complete a dream double. With the double theme now established, our Junior boys, completed an entire year without defeat winning the Youth Liga with 9 wins and a draw to register title number four. With winning now trending, SCC Ladies 1s lost their opening game of the NWL1 season seemingly hungover from the Sixes triumph to sprinkle joy on the neigh Sayers camp. However, to confirm that you can’t keep a good team down, our darling ladies produced 11-straight wins to secure their 5th Premiership and a third title in six years, five points ahead of the pack.

The day after our Men’s 1s went out and did the job to win the NHL1 title by a clear 6-points. A clear testament to their scintillating 7-games winning form following a 3-8 reverse at the hands of ORA. Including coming back from the death against Tornados, trailing 2-3 with 3 minutes ago, beating them 4-3 and then dismantling the league runners up Jansenites 7-2 and eventual bronze medallist ORA 5-2. It also worth mentioning that we did the double over SRC for the first time in our long history, beating them 7-0 and 120, albeit they are going through a rebuilding stage it is ever so pleasing to keep two clean sheets and rack in the goals against our illustrious neighbours. These rare occurrences of both our Men and Ladies 1s winning the Sixes and National League titles at the same time brought forth the phrase “Double Double”. Right smack in between the Double Double, our Ladies managed to sneak in the Dutch Woodenshoe title. The Woodenshoe is the Hollandse Club’s almost annual hockey carnival, a gift from our Dutch friends to Singaporean based clubs for including them in the hockey family. Our ladies have traditionally been highly successful in this event and it was no surprise that they picked up this title to make it 3 out of 3 and leave SCC Hockey on 7 titles.

SCC CELEBRATES A HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL YEAR AT THEIR ANNUAL AWARDS NIGHT The penultimate event on the SCC Hockey calendar was their Annual Awards night, aka “The Golden Ball”. Kirsty Thompson was the brain child behind this unique award which uses retired training balls to be born again as an exceptional piece of recognition for the players who stood out during the season. This is the 5th year of the Golden Ball and 18 SCC Hockey members or teams were recognised for their endeavour in 2017. In light hearted fashion to ease the Double Double theme, three Golden Balls were given to members who are married and are currently playing for SCC, entitled, the Single to Double award. Other new awards that were introduced in the SCC Sixes Appreciation Award, where the member who have made outstanding contribution is honoured and finally, “Friend of SCC Hockey” an award to recognise a person who have contributed to the Hockey Section by giving up their own time and energy.

LIONS BUILD EARLY MOMENTUM – NINE TRIES BY EIGHT TRY SCORERS Henry Winter recounts an early season victory for the SCC Lions over Wanderers Rovers on the 18th November at Turf City. Early indications were that it would be an enjoyable day at the office for the men in black and gold, as the players arrived early to limber up run through the rehearsed line out and back line moves so diligently rehearsed at training the weeks before. The first half was all SCC with some stand out performances across the pitch. Two-try scorer, Alex Smith, was punching holes and running evasively, a barnstorming Harry Waugh was running hard lines with reckless disregard for the usual impulse for self-preservation and “man of the match” Mateen Jamil had arguably his best game for the Lions, smashing tackles and making his presence generally known, which included marching a man twice his size backwards at the scrum. There were also some glimpses of champagne rugby from Matt Head, Rob Valsler, Ian Gamble and Jack Whiskin, however Christian Zouein was on the wrong side of the biggest hit of the day – delivered by a padded goalpost!

34

THE PADANG JAN / FEB 2018

Shortly after half time SCC Lions were up eight tries to one, however some of the structure of the first half had disappeared and the early width and space created by the wide balls seemed to dry up and SCC resorted to playing a bit too flat and following the ball around too much. The referee also found his whistle in the second half and started penalising SCC for everything and Wanderers were back in the game. The Second half was a chance to bleed a few of the newer players in the squad, although quite literally as Geoff Hopwood, a new player for the Lions, ended up in Raffles General Hospital to receive fifteen stitches across his once modelesque face. In the end the score was 53 – 22 to the good guys.

SCC PLAYERS SELECTED FOR SINGAPORE Peter McFeely and Patrick Duffy were recently selected to play for Singapore in the Asian Rugby Division 2 tournament, held in Taipei in November. The side beat Thailand in the final with a score of 38-13 which sees Singapore now promoted to Singapore back into the Asia Rugby Championship Division 1 which is due to be played in May 2018. Well done gents and you’ve done SCC and Singapore proud!

RUGBY FOR ALL AT THE FRY GROUP 7S AND TOUCH SCC RUGBY ACADEMY TOURNAMENT The SCC Rugby Academy 7s is hosted on the Padang the week before the annual SCC Rugby 7’s tournament and is now one of the most popular fixtures for junior rugby in Singapore. This year’s tournament, saw nearly 300 games of both full contact and touch rugby between 131 teams made up of 1,834 children on the Padang, this must be a new record for sure! SCC Academy are the only junior rugby club in Singapore to host a tournament offering both a touch and rugby competition rolled into one weekend. The historic setting of the Padang was not lost on any of the players, even appreciated by the youngest of the players who were playing in the U5 tournament. The junior cup finals were played during a break in the SCC 7s competition, with some animated support from the crowd. This year, the SCC Rugby Academy achieved some of our best results, with four teams lifting the cup, while many others were runners up, plate winners and our touch teams performed magnificently winning their first cup. This year’s tournament also saw the first ever all girls Singapore-based team, The Valkyries, compete in the contact rugby competition in three age groups. The success of the Academy’s 7s tournament is a testament to the hard work of the organisers and volunteers (so a big thank you to all the SCC staff and all the volunteers of the SCC Academy). The SCC Rugby Academy is a junior rugby club offering a top quality rugby and touch experience for boys and girls aged 3 to 17 years of age. It’s a not for profit club with all our funds going back into the club and promoting junior rugby in Singapore. For further information please contact the Academy online www.sccrugbyacademy.com 2018 marks the 6th year of the Academy which has now grown to more than 400 children from a wide catchment of local and international schools in Singapore. The Academy really prides itself on the great mix of cultures and nationalities that train every week and we are now offering scholarships to local talented players. Many of our Academy coaches are drawn from the SCC rugby section, many of whom now appear in the recently printed 2018 SCC Academy Coaches Calendar, where you’ll get to see the fabulously fit coaches in a whole new light! The idea for the calendar was borne after a long day and a few post SCC Academy 7s beers in Stumps and it has proved to be a very popular and clever fundraiser for our adopted charity. We are all looking forward to the 2018 SCC Academy tournament to be hosted on the Padang in November next year.

YEAR-END CHEER The section held its AGM in October, when the section accounts for the year were accepted and a slate of office bearers elected. The first event of the new committee was a social golf game at Raffles Country Club followed by dinner at the Fukuya Japanese restaurant, where we celebrated the 71st birthday of long-time section member and ex-convenor, Mr Wee Jim Hock. One of the highlights of our calendar each year is the Christmas game and dinner. This year, the game was held at the nearby Marina Bay and a dinner & dance at the Padang restaurant. The familiar trio of Terry, Robin and Zain, was engaged to entertain the revellers through the night.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2018 One of the new features of the 2018 calendar will be the Medals competition for section members. The first of this quarterly series will be held at Seletar GCC on the 10th of January, to be followed with a barbecue dinner at the club’s Tavern. We would be playing the annual interclub match with Changi Golf Club on Saturday, 27th January. JSM CARNIVAL

Sport Ready: Winners of the U15 U17 U19 JSM Carnival

JSM Carnival

The JSM Carnival was an initiative set up by the Section five years ago to try to recruit new junior members. This year’s carnival, held on 18th November, was a roaring success with a record number of teams participating. Although the weather was unapologetically hot, the players were full of energy throughout the tournament. All of the games were strongly contested with every participant fighting hard for their team. A shoot-out competition was also run for the first time and was a massive hit with all the girls! We commend the participating teams for giving their all in every match and, most importantly, for superb sportsmanship. The games were certainly hard-fought with a few of the final matches going into extra time. Big congratulations to Sport Ready for completing a clean sweep in the U15, U17, and U19 divisions!

INTER-SECTION The Netball Inter-Section took place straight after the conclusion of the JSM Carnival. It was one of the most successful Inter-Sections we have had. Everyone was hugely enthusiastic and while the umpires took a (necessary) lenient view on the rules, the standard was much higher than expected given that most participants had never played netball before. We would like to thank members of the rugby, cricket, squash, tennis and soccer sections for taking the time out to support the Netball Inter-Section. Your enthusiasm made the games enjoyable for everyone! Finally, a huge congratulation to the Tennis Section for becoming the 2017 champions – excellent netball skills displayed! The victorious Tennis players – winners of the 2017 Inter-Section

If anyone would like to join the Netball Section ready for the mixed season starting in January, please drop an email to our captain at carol.hartopp@hoganlovells.com.

YEAR-END LEAGUE 2017 After an eight week break, the girls were back for the yearend league. They competed in the first division, which was a little daunting to some who were either new to the team or had played in a lower division. Despite the uphill battle, we never gave up and fought hard in every match. No opponent was given an easy win! Well done, girls!

ASIAN MEN’S NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2017 Congratulations to Paul Foster, a member of the SCC Falcons on his selection to represent Team Singapore in the upcoming Asian Men’s Netball Championships 2017, 13-17th December in Kuala Lumpur. The Convenor and Treasurer’s reports were read and approved and then it was time for the election of the committee. The new committee is: Convenor – Sarat Chandran Men’s Captain – Robbie Lyons Ladies Captain – Eleanor Tan

Captain Tim Leong presenting Ben Sim with his fun prize

Secretary – Andrea Nicholas Committee members – Mahes Velupillai & Genevieve Gay JSM representative – Bryden Yong

After the meeting we began the ‘End Of League Dinner’ fun & games. League Captains got up to say a few words about their season and presented a fun prize to a deserving team member. A photo booth also provided lots of laughs. Rahul Khare had made a ‘Nick Quiz’ for the well-known quizmaster Nick Cochrane. Nick, as many of you will know, will be leaving Singapore early next year so we used this occasion to say a few words and presented him and Helen with a gift from the Section. The great buffet spread was organised by Mahes. As we welcomed a new Convenor and Men’s Captain, we said farewell to a former Convenor and Men’s Captain – Manmindar Singh. He has served on the committee for over 18 years. Over those years he has led the Section to many league titles, organised teams for league, tours, competitive matches and friendlies, helped start our junior programme and attracted some great players to the the Club. A former A-grade player who hung up his racket after his last knee operation about 6 years ago and has since taken up cycling, Manmindar is a man who commands respect, he’s very knowledgeable, calm and very capable. If we had a squash problem, Manmindar invariably knew what to do. He has nurtured a whole generation of players, including his son Preshin, who is now a full member of SCC.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2017 2017 has been an exciting year for tennis at the club. Here are some photos that capture the activities that were held throughout the year. We also have a new tennis committee for 2018. Please refer to SCC’s website or the tennis notice board at the club for more details. We organised the inaugural WTA-SCC Mixed Doubles Invitational in September. SCC made it to the finals which was played at the WTA Finals Practice Courts at the OCBC Arena. Participating players were also invited to watch Simona Halep’s private practice session. The club-wide Wimbledon Tennis Social was organised in July to mark the 140th year of Wimbledon! We discovered some hidden tennis talents from other sections too! Special cocktail for the occasion: the SCC Gin Spin. We hosted several visiting clubs in 2017 – our good old friends the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Floreat Tennis Club (Perth) and Serangoon Gardens Country Club. The Ladies A team came in Champions in the singles league in March, and to cap off the year, they also won the doubles league in September and October. Congratulations!
