PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE The new year may have gotten off on a rough start but on behalf of the General Committee, I would like to thank our Members for continuing to patronise the Club, play on our grounds, and participate in our events and activities. The safety of Members, guests and staff are of our paramount importance and we assure you we will walk the extra mile to do what is necessary to ensure a safe and clean environment for all while minimising disruptions as best we can. Our 2019 accounts have been finalised and I am glad to say that not only have we shown a profit but also improved over 2018 in all major indicators. We have been able to do so by singularly breaking down, understanding and rebuilding the various cost and revenue centres at the Club. This is all the more remarkable as we did not have the use of the Padang for a major part of the year. Our profit before tax is SGD416,580, which is SGD178,392 better than 2018. The detailed accounts will be published in the Annual Report. One of the major areas we have been concentrating on is building the brand name of the Club. In the long run this is the best asset we have and the best cushion against disruptions in the market. Our place in the sporting space especially in the international scene is very important. We have also been actively using social media to spread the SCC word. The GC has been spending more time on the “SCC Vision” while letting management look after the day to day operations with clear KPIs. Laughter is the best medicine, and this year we are launching a monthly series of Comedy Nights at SCC starting this March with award-nominated and internationally-touring Scottish comedian Chris Henry, while we welcome in April one of the most energetic and original performers on the comedy circuit, Phil Nichol – do join us! March is a special month as we celebrate International Women’s Day and the social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women across the globe. We hope you will enjoy the special feature interviews in this issue. Make sure you join us as we dazzle the night away at our SCC Ladies’ Night on
18 March – featuring a specially-curated 4-course dinner by a well-known female chef, four exclusively customised Hendricks Gin cocktails concocted by guest mixologist Charmaine Thio, and live band entertainment! Several children’s events and activities have been lined up for our young ones – with different types of holiday camps, a theatre show, and an Easter party - and not to forget, our Junior Cricket, Football, and Tennis programs! Tender documents for our VIP Hospitality Suites for the SCC Night Race 2020 (18 – 20 September) will be available from 23 March to 24 April. We are looking forward to another exciting weekend of racing action, during which you can have the great opportunity to entertain associates and guests in our exclusive private suite boxes. More information is available in this issue. On Saturday, 27 March we will be holding the 13th SCC Annual Sports Awards Night at the Padang Restaurant, when we will celebrate our sportsmen and sportswomen from all Sections for their active participation and dedication to sports at SCC. Join us as we honour our sporting elites and present awards to top achievers – including the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award – then let your hair down at the post-awards ceremony’s dinner and after-party when the festivities will continue into the night. This one evening is by far the most important one in the year for us. In these times, we encourage all Members and their guests to take extra care of their health and exercise social responsibility. In continued unity, the SCC Family will remain strong and able to weather any storm. I look forward to seeing you at the Club!

In Memorian: Anthony Richardson Anthony Richardson joined the Singapore Cricket Club in 1975 and for more than 45 years Tony, as he was affectionately called, was an active Member of the Hockey, Soccer, Lawn Bowls, Billiards & Snooker, Balut and Darts Sections. At different points of his Club life, he was elected as a General Committee member (2010-11), was in the Club’s Food & Beverage Subcommittee, served as Chief Marshall and Organising Committee Member in the SCC Hockey Sixes and was also on the SCC Soccer Sevens Organising Committee. Tony was also Convenor of the Lawn Bowls and Darts Sections, as well as one of the Soccer Section’s founding Padantiques (PADS) He represented Singapore in Lawn Bowls international tournaments in Canada and New Zealand, played for the Singapore Veteran’s Hockey team in several international tournaments and also somehow found the time to represent SCC in Lawn Bowls, Darts, Squash, Soccer and Hockey in local and regional tournaments, as well as serve as manager for some of the Sections’ overseas tours and coached too. In fact, at the tender age of 72, he played hockey competitively for the Club as the Men’s 4th Team’s captain. Although Tony resided in Singapore most of his adult life, he had never forgotten his roots. He loved Yorkshire and particularly his home city, Hull – he was the founding member of the Hull City FC supporters' club and held its AGM at his house every year. A Yorkshire man, as stubborn as he was loyal, he dealt with his illness as he did with anything in his life - head on and bluntly! He would not yield and continued visiting the Club, even holding his 81st birthday party in the Padang Restaurant. Not just a sportsman, Tony was a true representative of the Singapore Cricket Club - his service to the Club was immeasurable and his friendships with both Members and staff alike truly invaluable. Rest in peace.
Tony 'Rivellino' Richardson...an SCC stalwart of legendary status both on and off the Padang. Tony was one of my SCC hero's when i joined the Club in 1997, my respect and admiration of this great man is endless, a true Yorkshire man with a mischievous sense of humor and dogged determination in equal measures. I was fortunate to accompany Tony at the Oval Verandah recently where we enjoyed his favourite dish - the Fish Moolie - a meal fit for a king...Tony was indeed a majestic figure in several sections of the SCC over many years, he will be missed and discussed... in equal measures. RIP my eternal friend. Peter 'Shooter' Schott.
To our dear Tony you were a huge pain most of the time but a lovely person with a big heart who we will miss very much, especially your Hull City parties. RIP my friend. Rod Murchison

: e g a t S e r t n e C g n i k a T g n i e b l l e W & h t l a e Women’s H In recognition of International Women’s Day (8 March), we are highlighting the importance of women’s health and well-being, so our ladies can go on to soar to even greater heights in the social, economic, cultural and political arenas. Read what some of our female Members have to share about staying strong both physically and mentally.
Petrina Anne De Souza This 29-year old has been a JSM for 13 years now and currently plays for the SCC Hockey Ladies’ First Team that won its 6th title in the National Women’s League and its 4th National Indoor Hockey title last year. When you are not playing hockey, what are your other favourite ways to stay fit? When I’m not playing hockey, you can find me at the SCC Gym or having a run around the bay.
How do you ensure work-life balance, allocate your time and stay focussed? I find that having a routine makes it easier. I allocate certain days for my fitness after work. There are of course days where laziness kicks in, but I’ve found that the trick is to just show up. Tell yourself “I’ll just do a short session today” and most of the time, you’ll find yourself pulling through.
What does having healthy eating habits mean to you? As a lover of all kinds of food, eating healthy is something I used to struggle with. But as your question suggests, it’s all about making a habit of things. I’ve made of habit of packing a healthy lunch on weekdays, to balance my “not so healthy” choices over the weekends. I find that it’s not about restricting yourself, but finding a balance that is comfortable for you to continue long term.
Cynthia Robless In her more-than-20 years in SCC, this forever-young member has been active not only in Section activities but also with volunteering in the Subcommittees, i.e. Marcom and Property. Diet, exercise, mindset – what proportions of these do you think help contribute to a healthy lifestyle? I think what contributes to a healthy lifestyle is 40% Mindset, 30% Diet, 30% Exercise. The mindset is most important – try to be positive and push away negative vibes. I also ensure I catch up on rest, so my body can recover well.
What is your approach to staying active? It is important to keep company amongst people to keep your mind active. I keep busy with activities, whether at home or outside with friends walking at a mall, or at one of the many park connectors and parks in Singapore. I also enjoy catching a movie with friends, going for concerts and exhibitions, and even the library to get books and attend talks! And of course I spend time in the company of fellow members at the Club – I play Balut, and I also intend to increase my physical activity by playing more lawn bowls. I also plan to join a community club near my home and register for some courses.
What are your favourite ways to de-stress and take time for yourself? I unwind by having a lazy day by myself, reading a book, watching a Netflix movie, and having a snack (plus a drink!)

FEATURE
Olivia Law This youthful-looking 64-year old was formerly Convenor of the Bridge Section and has continued to play active roles in various capacities in the Section. What activities do you do to stay physically active and mentally alert, and how do you make time for these activities? I attend yoga class three times a week; I have been doing yoga consistently for the past 15 years. I have always been involved in some form of physical activity throughout my life – I played netball in school and was a school athlete; continued playing squash and badminton when I started teaching. When I had children, I swam more and played tennis. In my forties, I started attending adult ballet classes before yoga became fashionable, then I switched to yoga when I turned 50. Another great activity is walking, which I do about three times a week too. If I am walking with friends, we may do up to 10 km. I also keep mentally alert by playing bridge at least once or twice a week, volunteer at a learning disabled school regularly, travel, and sometimes do short teaching stints too.
Why do you think it is important for women to prioritize their health and mental well-being? I think it is vitally important to keep physically and mentally active as life expectancy increases and you can’t or shouldn’t expect your children to look after you in your old age. One’s quality of life depends very much on physical and mental well- being.
Bek Scholes This new mum of a month-old baby boy is a SCC Touch Rugby Lioness not to be trifled with! Do you think there is truth in the statement “Exercise makes you happy”? Absolutely. For me, physical activity has brought happiness through social connection and a sense of achievement. There is nothing better than playing in a competition with your mates and bringing home a medal or two is an added bonus.
What motivates you to exercise? Fun, friends and fitness. I’ve always enjoyed playing team sports so signing up to social touch football and netball was my top priority when I first moved to Singapore. This gave me the opportunity to meet new people and to be involved with SCC as a touch football player and coach. Now with baby Harry, I am looking forward to involving him in the sport too (maybe cheer squad for the SCC touch teams to begin with).
For you, what is the key to being body and mind positive? 1. Surrounding myself with positive, like-minded people. 2. Prioritising physical activity and doing activities I enjoy so it doesn’t feel like a chore. 3. Training and game days also gives me a great excuse to enjoy all the foods Singapore has to offer (more so when shared with others). MAR / APR 2020 THE PADANG

Meet Sarah Wong: Junior Sports Member (JSM) and the first female in the Billiards & Snooker Section. A promising snooker and pool player, this 23-year old undergraduate from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has already been representing SCC in social interport snooker events.
How did you become interested in pool and snooker?
Are there any pool and/or snooker players you look up to?
I started playing in my first year of poly in Singapore Polytechnic (SP) in 2013; a classmate was interested in joining the team and asked me to accompany her for the trials, which I did with no intention of trying out myself. The seniors there encouraged me to try since I was already there and I made it into the club despite never having played before (till today I’m not too sure how I got in HAHA). I initially went for training because I enjoyed the company of the people there and over time, my interest in this sport grew.
I think that has got to be Joshua Filler because of his age — he’s 23 this year but has already won world championships. The first time I saw him play was a few years back and then, he was just very accurate in his potting and had a lot of confidence in himself which could be seen through the way he played. However, in the short span of a year his game play improved tremendously in terms of his placing, shot choices etc and I think I was quite inspired to know that a person can make that much progress in just a year if they put in the effort.
I only started playing snooker in my first year in Uni in NTU in 2016 and found it an interesting game as unlike pool, it’s less about being able to clear the balls on the table and make big breaks but safety is a very big part of the game as well.
What is it that you enjoy about cue sports? It’s a game that rewards your hard work. The effort you put into training is proportionate to your improvement. In tournaments, your only opponent is really yourself. While some may disagree, saying your opponents play a part as there are snooks involved in the game, I feel you are always only playing against yourself, the ability to break out of a snook reflects your knowledge and training and that’s something I enjoy as you are wholly in control of the games.
Cue sports are stereotypically seen as men’s sports; have you ever encountered any sexism when playing? How do you counter such behaviour? I have, in many instances. In pool, there was once I was playing a tournament and overheard my opponent tell his friend that “my opponent is a girl, this is going to be an easy game”. In my 2nd year of playing NSL for NTU, the president of another participating club actually told me to stop playing snooker as it was meant for men. I think such stereotypes actually push me harder to perform in my games, to prove that while cuesports is stereotypically seen as a men’s sport, the scene is changing drastically to make room for women and I think that they need to see a female perform well to spark that mindset shift.
Are there any differences between playing against male and female players? There’s definitely a difference, the standard of males are generally higher – their clearance abilities are better, safeties are tighter. But when I’m in a game, that doesn’t matter to me because in cuesports, you just have to do what you need to do to win that rack/frame to get you closer to winning the match.
12
THE PADANG MAR / APR 2020
I do enjoy watching the pros play as you can learn a lot, but I don’t exactly follow any pros games in particular as everyone has a different way of playing, and watching too much of a certain player makes you inclined to imitate their way or playing and that’s not exactly a good thing as you close yourself to other alternatives that make work better for you.
Any cue sports ambitions for yourself? Ambitions wise, I have not set concrete goals like others who dream of representing the country as I feel that first and foremost my studies and career are important. However, I train and compete with the mentality that I want to make myself better than I was the day before and that has helped me improve tremendously over the years.
What are the other ways you stay active? When time and schedule permits, I enjoy taking up yoga classes as I feel it is a good way to stay active and destress at the same time.
Do you think women should play cue sports and why? I feel cuesports is anybody’s game and whoever likes to play be it men or women should play if it makes them happy. Many people who play and compete feel that winning is the most important thing in this sport but I feel that being happy when you play, or in whatever you choose to do is the most important as only when doing something you enjoy will you find ways to improve.
What would you like to say to the female Members who might be thinking of taking up cue sports and/or playing at the Club? I’d say just try your hand and see how far you can go. While it may be daunting being in an environment with so many males, there’s really no limit to how far you can surpass them if you try.

Espresso Martino Spice & Stormy This intense brew is a velvety combination of spiced flavours. The incorporation of the Seedlip Spice 94 gives it a bright and citrusy finish.
This mocktail is a non-alcoholic twist on the sophisticated Espresso Martini, made with the Seedlip Spice 94 for a bold and aromatic flavour.
Garden Sour Garden Fever Made from a blend of Fever-Tree tonic and Seedlip Garden 108, the Garden Fever is the classic gin & tonic in its non-alcoholic form.
The Garden Sour is a complex, herbal-based non-alcoholic cocktail created with the Seedlip Garden 108 for a beautiful floral blend, completed with hints of apple, lemon, and rosemary.
ABOUT SEEDLIP Over three hundred years ago, it was common to distil herbal remedies using copper stills. Physician John French documented these recipes and published The Art of Distillation in 1651. At the same time, there was a family in Lincolnshire that had started farming by hand sowing seeds using baskets called ‘seedlips’.
Minosa Pink Panther This sweet and tangy expression is the perfect summer drink made with the Seedlip Grove 42 for a dry, citrusy finish.
This zesty and citrusy blend is a non-alcoholic take on the elegant Mimosa. Made with the Seedlip Grove 42, it has an uplifting spice flavour and clean, fresh notes.
Haru Fizz The Haru Fizz is a light and refreshing green tea-inspired drink that is concocted with the Seedlip Garden 108 for an herbal twist.
Centuries later, Seedlip’s founder, Ben, stumbled across John French’s recipes and began experimenting with them, using a small copper still and herbs from his garden. That pink mocktail he was served at a restaurant gave him the idea of combining his farming heritage and those forgotten recipes with the need for proper non-alcoholic options. Coupled with the seed baskets carried by his family centuries before, Seedlip was born.

Yvon Mau Colombard Chardonnay 2018, France
Yvon Mau Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, France
Intense and fairly complex, first expressing the varietal notes of the Colombard (lime, lemon) and a delicate mineral hint (flint). Swirling then reveals white fruit aromas mingling with floral notes (acacia, wisteria). Palate: lively and fleshy in the attack, great balance. In the finish the lemon and peach notes include a subtle hint of green mango.
Delicate fruity nose, first evocating of berries juice; when agitating, raspberry and blackberry notes become more intense, mingled with hot spices (cinnamon and nutmeg). Its fleshy and well-balanced palate expresses both the powerful fruit and varietal elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. It has a fine, strong finish of blackberry, blackcurrant and cocoa.

Le Morette Lugana D.O.C. Mandolara 2018, Italy
Le Morette Bardolino Classico D.O.C. 2018, Italy
Turbiana grapes for this wine are hand-harvested from a narrow strip of land on the shore of Garda Lake. Soft crushing and temperature controlled fermentation are crucial to the creation of Lugana Mandolara. It has a pale straw-yellow colour, with green reflections. Its characteristic balanced bouquet is pleasant and fresh with white flowers. On the palate, there are apple and peach notes, finished with a trace of bitter almonds.
Bardolino Classico’s pale ruby color captures attention. Its harmonious, captivating aromas and lingering flavours deliver a wine that is a memorable and enjoyable. It has well-balanced flavours that are dry and spicy with a slightly bitter finish. Grape variety: Cabernet Sauvignon $52.00 per bottle / $13.80 per glass

ANNUAL AWARDS Our Annual Awards Presentation evening was held on 3 February during our CNY Celebration. The Player of the Year award was presented to John Martens (seen in the photo with Olivia Jacob and Edith Somogyi). The best pair award was presented to Perumal Ramanathan and Usha Perumal (also pictured with Olivia Jacob and Edith Somogyi.
CNY CELEBRATION The section held its CNY celebration on 3 February, the ninth day of the Lunar New Year. The buffet prepared by the Club’s Chef had a distinctive “Zi Char” flavour about it. We had 15 pairs playing on the evening. The pairs with score of 60 or better were Felix Gnanapragasam/Lee Cheong Seng and Ajit and Shyamala Kanagasundram. Our next celebration will be our Easter event on Monday, 13 April.
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION The Bridge Section Christmas celebration was held on 16 December in the Gilmour Room. Once again Section Members enjoyed a delicious themed buffet. It was decided to start a little earlier this year to allow Members plenty of time to enjoy the spread, have a relaxing chat, and still leave plenty of time for some semi-serious bridge. There were 15 pairs on competing on the evening. Scores of 60 or better were recorded by Usha Perumal and Perry Ramanthan (East/West) and Purushothaman and Charles Macgregor (North/ South). Both pairs are pictured receiving their winners’ vouchers from Patricia Jasudasen, Section Captain.
LEARN-TO-PLAY The Section will hold a beginners’ bridge course once the coronavirus warning has been de-escalated. This will consist of four three-hour sessions on a Saturday and will likely take place in the Victoria Room. The Section will send out an information poster once the dates have been finalised. The course will be open to Section Members and non-Section Members.

WRITER’S NOTE: “No matter where I go, I can always make new friends at the bridge table.” Martina Navratilova. And so said one of the greatest female athletes of our generation. Other famous bridge players include: Gandhi, Deng Xiaoping, Chico Marx, Omar Shariff, James Bond (aka Ian Fleming), Snoopy (aka Charles Schultz), Bill Gates, Radiohead, Hercule Poirot (aka Agatha Christie), and Warren Buffett. Bridge is a wonderful game for keeping the brain active and is thought to be helpful in slowing the onset of degenerative brain diseases. It is a unique game in that you can play your entire life and keep improving all the time (or so this writer hopes).

SCC JUNIOR TOUR TO PERTH Touring is etched within the fabric of all things Sport at the Singapore Cricket Club. For a number of years, our Senior Cricketers have scoured the globe seeking Cricket-playing refuge. For our Juniors, a tour program had never properly ignited and in 2019, SCC Cricket management decided that movement on this project was long overdue and our maiden Junior tour (as far as all accessible records suggest) was born! And our kids were off to Western Australia for an incredible ten days of sun, sea, sand and of course... CRICKET! The tour party departed Singapore for Perth early on the 5 December 2019. Excitement built, as this trip was, for many, the first through which our young adults had tackled without Mum or Dad in tow. Game one promised great things, against a brilliantly passionate Claremont Nedlands Cricket Club (CNCC). The Club continues to form a fantastic relationship with CNCC following their Junior Tour to Singapore in the summer of 2019 and our onward invitation to them for participation in the 2020 T10 Sling. Our boys continued to move from strength to strength and competed admirably against the strong units put out by Wembley Districts CC & Christchurch Grammar School. Often, to better engage relationships (and ensure that at least half the bunch came away with a win!), teams were combined to begin the building of relationships that will stay with our boys for years to come. Off the field was where the “once in a life time”s were truly presented. For all that is incredible about our native Singapore, our children’s access to the world’s best players is limited. Thus, ensuring that our children had the opportunity to meet their ‘superstars’ was a primary objective of this trip. On Day 4, we were invited by Cricket Australia to join the Australian Test Squad at their open practise at the famous WACA ground; following a scintillating centre-wicket practise, our boys were able to grab photos and squiggles from the best of the best as far as Green & Gold Cricket is concerned. Steve Smith, David Warner, Marcus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Matthew Wade, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood were amongst those who came around to meet and greet our “Boys of the Padang”. On Day 6, prior to Perth’s first ever Day/Night test for which our boys were present to witness the entirety of Day One, New Zealand batter and 2019 World Cup Finalist Henry Nicholls dropped in to share with our boys some of his learnings from the journey. Just in case that wasn’t enough, Adam ‘Gilly’ Gilchrist dropped in to greet our boys in their final fixture of the tour against CNCC - the club to which Gilly’s skilled son dons the keeper’s gloves. Once the scheduling gaps were filled, with bundles of sightseeing & trips to City and Scarborough Beach (where the boys underwent some sandy Fielding Clinics), a great tour was complete. The JSMs on tour get a special mention for their energy, enthusiasm, positive attitude to all things Cricket and beyond, their sublime baby-sitting of tour mascot Wongy. Your openness to learn and develop as young people, was an absolute pleasure to witness Your collective success on this tour made our year and excited so many within the SCC Cricket fraternity.
*SCC Junior Cricket Tours... they’re here to stay.*

Pleasingly, the Section raised more than $3,000 for the Australia Bushfire Appeal through the 6’s sweepstake - a big thanks to everyone who contributed and to the 57 6s that were hit during the competition. The Commonwealth Cup Final was followed by Captains’ Cocktails, which this year was held as an informal and relaxed event. The Section’s league and social captains were announced, including our new entry for a non-SCA event called Cage 30. We look forward to the Section’s support to our leadership team on and off the field, and wish them all the best for 2020. Meanwhile, the Section is driving full steam ahead into our biannual Cricket fiesta which has now been renamed to SCC T10 Sling and we look forward to engaging more sponsors and collaborative partners as we build towards the event in August. Singapore Indian Association Pongal Cup. Our Men finished 4th in the Khalsa 5s and then went onto to lose the finals in the Pongal Cup.
The SCC Hockey Section have used the challenging times faced by our country and the world to bond and build a truly united Section to make assaults on various competitions already lined up.
The Masters will only get better and will do their utmost to bring glory to the Club.
JUNIOR LEAGUE Both our Boys and Girls U19 Junior squads were top of their SHF National Junior League tables before the competition was cancelled due to the unwavering growth of the Novel Coronavirus leading to the island republic raising their Disease Outbreak Response Condition System (DORSCON) level to Orange.
NATIONAL INDOOR Disappointed as our starlets were they understood these measures were necessary in the larger scheme of things. However the National Indoor League soldiers on and our Indoor squads have started well. The Men, who are looking to go one better than last season’s silver finish, put away Tornados Hockey Club 8-2. Our Ladies in the meantime, who are three-time defending champions managed to come from 3-goals down at half time to win 8-3 over a spirited Crescent Hockey Club side. This season proves to be the toughest Indoor League we have been involved in to date.
LEAGUE 1 AND 2 PREPARATION With Pitch bookings hard to come by, the Mens and Ladies 1s have been training at the Padang under lights. Plans have been put in place to run some training sessions at the Boon Lay Hockey Village so that our Men’s and Ladies’ 1s will be best placed to attempt a rare double-double defence of their respective titles. The squads are also involved in a weekly fitness session and we are looking for an appropriate window to play friendly matches on top of our participation in the National Indoor League.
MASTERS OFF AND RUNNING The Masters are off and running already this season. They have already participated in two tournaments, the Khalsa 5s and the

1ST SOCIAL AND MASTERS KNOCK AROUND – MORE FUN AT THE PADANG The first Section-wide social was held on 31 January 2020. A knock-around on the Padang started at 5.30pm and a record 40 people turned out for it. Many of the same stayed back for a light dinner and drinks to celebrate the start of a new season. Alongside the first social, the Senior Masters graced the Padang on Monday 3 February for a fun run-around. The healthy numbers at these socials is what sets SCC in a position of leadership in the local hockey fraternity and also aids the Section’s capability to overcome challenges it is currently facing with regards to pitch availability.

Continuing a great start to 2020, the Netball Section hit the ground running in the Ladies Pre-Season League 2020 with our top three teams recording wins on the trot and our 4th Team showing lots of promise of what’s to come as the season progresses. While the Hawks (1sts) are finding their feet with an entirely new line up and fresh faces in Division 1, the Eagles (2nds), Ospreys (3rds) and Kites (4ths) have found a slight groove recording wins in their second matches of the league. We also sent a team comprising of mixed levels of players into the annual Daisy Tan carnival, run by Netball Singapore and held at Kallang Netball Centre. With plenty of youth, stamina and legs to get us through the hot day, the slight lack of experience cost us a spot in the semi-finals, albeit by a mere three goals. Nonetheless, a super showing by our young guns, plenty of learning and only better outcomes across the teams to come. Not to lose out on our social reputation off the court, the Section kicked off 2020 with a fun-filled night at the Rugby Ladies Day where many of the girls traded in their court kit for pretty frocks in support of the Rugby Section followed by a buffet dinner and drinks at the Padang restaurant. The Section’s social scene, now headed by Rosie Vavasour, continues to thrive. Wednesday, 19 Feb 2020, saw the Netball Section host its first ever social and open training session where Members of other Sections, wives and girlfriends, husbands and boyfriends are welcome to come and try netball. No experience necessary, sports kit mandatory! While aimed at recruitment, this session was also an opportunity for other Club Members to come and get to know the Netball Section and get involved when you might have otherwise thought it not possible! This is now set to be
a monthly event so look out for the posters and information as they get released! We look forward to seeing you there! In the meantime, we are also always on the lookout for new players – whether you are young or young at heart. We have a team for everyone! Get in touch with us: sccnetball@gmail.com

Rugby
Convenor: Henry Winter | Article by: Christopher Ellis
From top: Another great turnout for a Corona-affected Ladies Day; Relieved that the day still went ahead, some ladies opted for SCC Gold in appreciation of Jack and BGR’ efforts.
THE SHOW MUST GO ON - SCC LADIES DAY The last few years has seen the SCC Rugby Section ‘Ladies Day’ firmly establish itself as a Singapore society fixture. With the departure of Leo Shaw last year, the two social secretaries Jack Whiskin and BGR had a huge responsibility hosting an event that is highlighted on every WAGS calendar. You can only imagine the devastation these ladies would have felt when late on Friday, news filtered through over WhatsApp that the three league fixtures v Bucks had been postponed. Corona had finally struck at the heart of the Singapore sporting world. Whilst some players were likely escalating their Friday nights, Jack and BGR got into action. By the early hours of Saturday morning, a new schedule with less human contact had been arranged. With the committee mobilised, a new cricket oval and touch rugby pitch were set up. Casual touch matches escalated into lively exhibition matches with exquisite moves being demonstrated by both Bucks and the SCC. With the prosecco and pimms flowing, and sportsman having their thirst quenched by the hoppy yet refreshing taste of Lion lager, most were wondering whether Ladies Day was actually better without proper rugby anyway. On the cricket oval it was clear why the Rugby Section would always get comfortably beaten by the Cricket Section. However, occasionally the baseball stance does pay off and a few big sixes were seen. Unfortunately, despite multiple claims, the one-handone-bounce rule was not in force.
The day reached a crescendo when Howard De Podesta was spied strutting across the Padang carrying a new game – a game of skill, bravery, physicality and occasionally, luck. Kubb was to finally have its day on the hallowed turf of the Padang. After a brief introductory game by a small number of veterans, the obvious appeal of the game to sports fans from across the world was clear. Big performances were seen from Ben Turner, Charlie Osler and debutant Harresh Krishnan, who is possibly the leading Singaporean Kubb player at the moment. As light began to fade and Ladies Day moved back to the Clubhouse, Kubb was still being played by the street lights of Saint Andrew’s Road by its new enthusiasts. Rumours have been heard that Howard will be aiming to introduce the new SCC Kubb Section later this year. Joint Social Secretary Jack Whiskin was a relieved man at the end of a successful day: “I wasn’t going to let Coronavirus come over here and get away with it. Did we rescue Ladies Day? Did the ladies love it? Let the photos speak for themselves.”
From left: 1. After a couple of big sixes from Tankards captain Birdy, the Rugby Section sort the help of someone who knew the wicket much better. Caught first ball of the over at midwicket. 2. Real clubman; stashed up but not playing, enjoying the refreshing Lion Lager. Highly likely at least one of them buffaloed. 3. Some of the biggest names in international Kubb participate in one of the days main events. Kubb ambassador and internationally qualified umpire Howard De Podesta is hopeful Kubb will be on ESPN the Ocho soon.

The Singapore Squash team flying our flag high.
2019 COSMO SQUASH LEAGUE SCC Squash had a successful COSMO Squash League 2019 captained by Ben and Phil. For those eager to reminisce on COSMO 2019, here are the season highlights from Vice-Captain Phil: “The 2019 COSMO Squash League kicked off on 9th September. Pre-season training in the bag and team roster all sorted, the SCC team was primed for the competition ahead. First match SGCC away, expectations were high and so was team confidence. Results were not so positive unfortunately and the evening did not go our way. We lost three matches that went to 5 sets and went down 4-1 on the night. Next match, the hosts for this season, Tanglin at the SCC courts. Time to lay down a marker and get the season back on track. 4-1 victory SCC and some great games on the night. We were off and running, next week SICC beaten 3-2, followed by victory over the British and American clubs 4-1 on both occasions. Victory followed victory until two slight hiccups against the Hollandse Club and SGCC where we lost 3-2 both times. Just through mid-season we were sitting top 3 in a hotly contested league. Round 2 with the hosts Tanglin we went down 4-1. Next the British Club, a glorious 5-0 that put us into first place with 2 to play. Against the American Club away on the new courts however we went down 4-1. Going into the final match mathematically we still had a chance but we needed slip ups from others to be the overall victors. Unfortunately, we slipped up losing 4-1 to the Hollandse Club putting us into 4th place but only 1 point off the podium.
having missed out on the last 11 editions (22 years). What really stood out from this competition was the high level of playing standards displayed by the top professional players from around the world, playing at their maximal potential in a bid to do their countries proud. The pace of the rallies was, firstly, out of this world - I was gasping for air right from the first few rallies against New Zealand’s World Ranked 25 Campbell Grayson. Secondly, their court craft and accuracy levels were terrifying, especially in the back corners on the glass court. They do not give anything easy for their opponents to work with. Lastly, their fitness levels are right up there - 60 - 80minute matches are quite the norm. Have a look at the match of Joel Makin of Wales against Tarek Momen of Egypt, it’s hands down one of the best live matches I’ve watched in my entire life. Yes, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and we really wish to be back for the 2021 edition in New Zealand!”
SCC SQUASH COURT UPGRADES Our squash courts have gone through a round of upgrades in December last year. Both courts have had the floors sanded and cleaned, and plaster repaired. They are now also fitted with adjustable tins. The tin height is adjustable between 480mm from the ground and 430mm from the ground. The standard tin height is 480mm and this was the height of the tin for our courts previously. The lowered tin height of 430mm is preferred for PSA tournaments.
Overall it was a great season with some fantastic matches and generous hospitality both home and away by the players who stepped up to represent their clubs. Thanks to Tanglin Club who organized this season and hosted the end of season dinner; it all takes a tremendous amount of time week after week during the season. Final thanks must go to our own players, stay fit and see you on court next COSMO season.”
WORLD MEN’S TEAM SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020 SCC Squash’s Man Tong and Man Chin represented Singapore in the World Men’s Team Squash Championships 2020, together with their teammates Samuel Kang and Brandon Tan. They’ve done Singapore and the Club proud - Man Tong shares his experience here: “The World Men’s Team Squash Championships 2020 was an experience like no other - It is possibly the most prestigious and pivotal event for a non-Olympic sport like squash. The Singapore team was extremely honoured to have been part of this event,

WATCHING ALL THE ACTION AT THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2020 The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2020 season. Being summer in ‘Down Under’, it is one of hottest tournaments to play but also a good indicator to see which players will dominate the tennis season. The AO 2020 lasted from 14 January to 2 February 2020. Some SCC Tennis Section Members took the opportunity and organised their own private tour to attend the Men´s semi finals and the Ladies final matches. Their efforts paid off because they got to see Roger Federer playing Novak Djokovic. As Roger’s remaining tennis years are counted, it was a good opportunity to see him live in action. Watching the Australian Open wouldn’t be complete without visiting the place where it all began. Our SCC Club Membership has the benefit that SCC Members can visit prestigious clubs around the world which SCC has reciprocal arrangements with. This gave us the opportunity to visit and play at the historic Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in Melbourne which oversees 26 beautiful grass courts and 22 fully lit all-weather en-tout-cas courts. We had an amazing view from the clubhouse. The Australian Open were played on grass until 1988 at Kooyong. The club premises exhibit many items of past and it was an eyesight to see how rackets evolved from wood (Björn Borg) over Jimmy Conor’s metal racket, the Wilson T-2000 to the ones we use today. Before the clouds started to rain that day, we got to play some good doubles game on grass. What a delight! We were joined by Chiro Mukerjea, a former Indian Davis cup player whom we got to know during our 2018 tennis tour visiting the Melbourne Cricket Club. Another benefit when joining the official SCC Tennis Section Tours, you make new friends who you can call up when you are in town and ask for game. While some of the SCC Tennis Section Members got to see the matches live in Melbourne, the Tennis Committee back home in Singapore organised the screening of the men’s final in Stumps. Thanks to Vishal Vijay (Men’s Tennis Captain) for being on site and all Tennis Section Members who enjoyed a dramatic five set Men’s final in the Stumps bar.
