PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Thank you for your participation in our Club’s Annual General Meeting on 24 April 2021; a total of six resolutions were put forward and the majority of you voted to carry them forward with your votes. On behalf of the Club, I would like to take this opportunity to thank outgoing General Committee Members Mr. Rangachari Raghavan, Mr. Victor Olsen, Mr. Anwar Gaffoor, and Mr. David Jones for their tremendous service to the Club over the past term. We welcome Mr. Hamish Christie, Mr. Srikanth Kakulapati, Mr. Rajan Menon and Mr. Jon Robinson to the General Committee and look forward to working with them. Honours to SCC Lawn Bowler Ms. Shermeen Lim who recently won the BowlsSG National Ladies Open Championship. The SCC is currently hosting the BowlsSG National Pairs Bowls Championships (within strict social distancing guidelines) and the matches are held every Sunday with the finals to be held on 30 May. SCC has eight Mens’ and three Ladies’ teams participating. Do come along and support our bowlers. Preparations are underway for the projects for the replacement of the chiller plant and the building of the Padang Storage Building together with the alterations to the Bin Centre. Apart from adding greater functional value, it will add a very pleasant outlook looking at the Club with its eminent position in the middle of the Civic District, from the Connaught Drive side. We shall also be setting up an Investment Committee specifically to manage SCC reserves of about $20 million. We already have set some targets for the new term, including tackling what is a major concern for all establishments – data security; the Finance Sub-Committee will be finalising an IT and Cyber Security Review to ensure that the Club’s IT processes and structures are fit for their purpose from a security perspective. In addition to having had the privilege of being hosted at cricket in 2013 and 2019 by our reciprocal club, MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club – the home of Cricket), the SCC Bridge Section will be partaking in an inaugural Bridge match against the MCC on 16 May. Our thanks to Section Member Mr. Richard Holloway for setting this up. Ms. Edith Somogyi, the Bridge Convenor, will be one of the eight SCC players representing us. We set about in the last GC term to increase the contact points for Members with the Club in addition to Sports

and F&B. We are happy to say that Book Club initiative had received good traction and currently there are six groups with between five to nine members in each group. Currently, they all meet virtually via Zoom, but it would be great to be able to meet at the Club in person at some point in the future. For more information on the Book Club, do write in to memberengagement@scc.org.sg. The Brisk Walking and Running group meet on Monday evenings and they do a trail walk every third Saturday of the month. On 1 May, the Club had its first 20km group Bike Ride after which the cyclists came back to a hearty breakfast at the Courtyard. The Club has been a hive of activity the past many months. All F&B outlets have been very packed, particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings with waiting times of one hour not being uncommon. We beg our Members’ patience. If you are looking to do something different and have a quiet evening in, especially during the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day weekends, check out the special roast takeaway and delivery promotions our F&B team has in store for you. Our current lease expires in 2026. The Club has started dialogue with the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and we shall keep the Members updated on progress in this area. As we look forward to the lease renewal, the Club should consider the feasibility of embarking on a development program to add more facilities, examining all options whether they be within the building, going underground and maybe even consider an off-site clubhouse. If you have any ideas and suggestions which you think can help us better the environment and offerings of SCC, please do write in with your contributions. While we still have to exercise caution to ensure the safety of everyone at SCC, we are thankful that our Members have been so adaptable and supportive, enabling the Club to return more or less to its lively self. Do continue patronising our facilities as we work on delivering more exclusive quality services to you. See you at the Clubhouse!

Partner Practice of St. James’s Place (Singapore) Private Limited

THE 2021 UK BUDGET REVIEW Rishi Sunak’s Budget this year was a Budget of two halves. His Budget Speech on 3rd March set out a broad 5-year plan combining short-term economic stimulus with medium term fiscal tightening. This was then followed by the publication of a clutch of ‘Consultation Documents’ on 23rd March which make wide-ranging structural changes to the tax system. The Budget was dominated by the financial impact of Covid-19. The Government has borrowed £408bn so far to fund Covid relief alone, and National Debt is set to peak at 97.1% of GDP in 2023/24. Mr Sunak described repaying this debt as a ‘generational task’. In the meantime, the Government will continue to do ‘whatever it takes’ to protect jobs and businesses. Due to measures already taken, the Office for Budget Responsibility now anticipates a swifter and more sustained recovery, with the economy expected to return to pre-Covid levels by mid-2022. The four top stimulus announcements from the Budget Day speech: •

Extension of Stamp Duty relief on the first £500,000 paid towards residential property to 30th June, followed by a reduction to £250,000 before returning to preCovid levels of £125,000 from 1st October 2021

Introduction of 8 Freeports aimed at local regeneration, enjoying enhanced Capital Allowances for business investment, 100% Stamp Duty and Business Rates relief and Employer National Insurance relief until 2026

A ‘super deduction’ of 130% of the value business investment between 1st April 2021 – 31st March 2023

A generous enhancement to the corporate loss relief rules to allow an unlimited carry back of losses to generate prior year Corporation Tax refunds

The five major tax-raising measures announced: •

Corporation Tax will rise from 19% to 25% from 1st April 2023

On 6th April 2021, the Income Tax allowance will rise to £12,570 and the Basic Rate Threshold to £37,700. Both will then be frozen until 5th April 2026

The Annual Exempt Amount for Capital Gains Tax will remain unchanged to 5th April 2026

The Lifetime Allowance for UK Pension Rights will remain fixed at £1,073,100 until 5th April 2026

The Inheritance Tax allowance of £325,000 will also remain fixed until 5th April 2026

Consultation Day did not, thankfully, result in an overhaul of the Inheritance Tax system, pegging Capital Gains Tax rates to Income Tax or indeed the introduction of a one-off Wealth Tax, which had been the subject of much speculation. Instead, the Treasury has opted for a more reserved series of measures. The following are noteworthy: •

Timely Payment – A means of bringing the payment of tax closer to the point where the income/gain arises

Making Tax Digital – This will apply to landlords from 6th April 2023 and will replace the Self-Assessment tax regime

Non-Compliance – A further raft of measures aimed at those who are not compliant with their tax obligations, promoters of failed tax schemes and collection of international tax debt

Property Developer Tax – A new tax to be introduced in 2022 levied on the largest developers of residential property.

Overall, the combined cumulative tax revenue raised by the measures announced in the Budget Speech over the five-year period to 5th April 2026 is £68.975bn; or a mere 17% of the present level of Covid-19 related borrowing. Further measures will certainly be needed in due course, but for the moment the Chancellor appears to be taking the view that it will, indeed, require a generational commitment to repay the debt. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. Select Investors is a Partner Practice of St. James’s Place (Singapore) Private Limited. What should you do now? For British Expatriates and those with assets or pensions in the UK, the Budget and Consultation Day announcements have left us with an obvious call to action. Select Investors invites all SCC members to a confidential no-obligation meeting with their Head of Tax, Martin Rimmer to discuss the impact of these announcements on your own tax, succession and wealth plans – and to make them better. Contact martin.rimmer@sjpp.asia to book your appointment.

SAY HELLO TO OUR ! N IO T C E S L L A B T E N C C S The 71-strong Netball Section is a close-kit family of Members of diverse ages who train and play hard while having lots of fun together both on and off the courts. In this issue, we speak with three of our SCC Netballers for an insight into this dynamic Section.

ELIZABETH MOHAN – 16 YEARS OLD What made you decide to join the Netball Section? I have been a regular at the Club since I was a literal baby (my dad has been a member for over 20 years). Every time we ate at The Oval I would witness the athletes out on the court training rigorously and just having the best time. I’ve always known that the Club had a Netball Section but never got around to finding out more information until the end of last year. I wanted the opportunity to make connections with people of all ages, all united by their love for the sport. I knew that joining the Netball Section would allow me to meet new people and forge lasting friendships through the time spent during practice.

At my first session, I witnessed the warmth and friendliness from all the other players, and at that moment I knew that I was about to be welcomed with open arms by people of different ages and backgrounds. Also, there’s just no better way to end a tough day at school than with such a positive community.

What made you interested in the sport? I started playing netball when I was 13. I was an accidental netballer. I was keen on joining track and field in secondary school. At the tryouts for netball, I was approached by my senior, Xin Yi (who is one of my closest friends today), who felt that I had the height and could be useful to the team for certain matches. I was given a crash course in netball and played only one quarter in my school team’s next match! Despite feeling a little lost, I loved the intense rush of adrenaline I experienced that day as well as the warmth from my teammates. That’s what got me fired up and keen to carry on with the sport.

What would you say to those who think Netball is only for younger athletic females? Woah. I totally disagree with this statement. I may not be the best person to answer this question, seeing that I am a young athletic female, but most clubs welcome women of all ages and backgrounds, and, to me, this is what makes the netball community such a welcoming and nurturing one. It’s not just one’s physicality that makes them suitable for the sport. It’s also about the mindset and readiness to respond to the demands the sport places on the way you think, to defend, or to anticipate an attack, and eventually, to score a goal. I look up to so many Netballers who do not let their age define them, and are at their peak in terms of agility, speed and athletic skills. How lucky I am to have such glorious role models.

What’s your favourite dish at SCC and why? My favourite dish has got to be the Mutton Rendang. It is slowcooked and braised in coconut milk seasoned with a herb and spice mixture, until the liquids evaporate and the meat turns dark brown and tender, becoming caramelized and infused with rich flavours. It just melts in my mouth and there’s no better way to describe the sensation I get from devouring it.

Why should Members join the Netball Section? You’ll not only be able to reap all the physical benefits offered by the sport, keep fit and feel great but also being in a team, you learn how to work with people of various backgrounds. It’s a great bonding experience knowing that you are part of a team of women who are here to support you, many of whom I became instant friends with. Also, training is extremely flexible, so come as you please. What’s stopping you from joining us?

12

THE PADANG MAY / JUN 2021

FEATURE

LAURA HEYWORTH – 37 YEARS OLD What is your favourite netball position and why? It’s probably Centre (C), although as I get older playing Wing Attack (WA) means I have less of the court to run around on, which is a bonus when there are so many youngsters to keep up with on court now! I love mid court attacking positions because I can use my height to bring the ball down the court effectively and provide high feeds to our shooters. It’s also a really energetic position, and I enjoy linking up the play between defence and attack.

What does a typical SCC Netball training session entail? Eric, Nan and Jini all make sure we firstly have fun at training. We often start with ball drills or cardio exercise in the form of a fun activity, it allows all players of all levels to join in together and warms us up and gets us chatting and to know each other better. We often then progress to more formal dynamic warm up drills both with and without the ball. Each session then might concentrate on an area of our game each team needs to improve upon, such as feeds into the circle. Our coaches always give really constructive advice and are supportive in encouraging you to keep trying until we are playing more confidently. Training often ends with a game, practising some of the skills we have been learning.

What are some of the Section activities off the courts that you have enjoyed? I’m pleased to say I’ve made some great friends through SCC Netball. And this bond has been reinforced through social activities such a quizzes, social tournaments, dinners and intersection events for example. There’s a good few members of the squad who enjoy a few drinks together at Stumps bar, and had been known to frequent Hero’s for some dancing before Covid restrictions! Socially the team is also hugely supportive, and I received a really thoughtful hamper of goodies last year on the date of my wedding, which we had to postpone due to us being unable to fly back to the UK.

What’s your favourite spot in SCC and why? The Stumps terrace for drinks as the sun goes down. It really is one of the best views looking out over the Padang. You can’t beat the gin and tonic prices either!

Why should Members join the Netball Section? We are a super friendly bunch, with great humour both on and off court. I think we are a great blend of Singaporeans and Expats, and as an expat it’s made me feel at home in Singapore. We love playing netball and are competitive in all our matches, but we also know it’s just a game, and the enjoyment of playing netball comes from participation at any level.

The SCC Netball Section consists of the following teams: • SCC Hawks (1st Ladies’ team) • SCC Eagles (2nd Ladies’ team) • SCC Ospreys (Junior team competing in adult leagues) • SCC Flamingos (Touring team) • SCC Kites (Juniors competing in adult leagues) • SCC Falcons (mixed team with male members from other Sections including Cricket and Rugby) • SCC Chicks (U16 team) Social players also make up an integral part of the Section. Trainings are currently on every Wednesday at the Multi-Purpose Courts, from 7pm. In addition, the Section also organises other activities including cross-trainings and socials! For more information on the SCC Netball Section and to sign up, contact the Convenor Nanthini Viknesh at sccnetball@gmail.com

TANYA TOPFER – 57 YEARS OLD What made you decide to join the Netball Section? I played netball in Australia since I was a child, and have always enjoyed the sport. When I moved to Singapore, I hoped that I would be able to continue to play and was delighted when I discovered that SCC had a Netball Section. I quickly sent off an email, somewhat nervous that I would be considered too old to join (I am in my late 50’s). I was overjoyed to receive a reply from Nanthini declaring ‘age is just a number’ and welcoming me to the Section. Nanthini’s email is the reason I decided to join the Netball Section; I knew I would be among friends.

What interested you in the sport? In Australia netball is the highest participation sport, most little girls have at least tried netball, I played because my friends played. I respect the netball ethos of providing the opportunity to participate in sport in a way the brings good health, recognition, achievement, involvement, and satisfaction. From grass roots level to elite competition there is a place for everyone in the netball community. Many of my closest friendships have been formed through my involvement in netball and I have had the opportunity to participate in many wonderful competitions, and spectate at state, national and international tournaments. Netball for me is not so much an interest as a way of life, and includes playing, coaching, umpiring, socialising and spectating. I will continue to be involved in netball in whatever capacity that I am able.

What would you say to those who think Netball is only for younger athletic females? I would say to those that think netball is only for younger athletic female that sport in general is a lifelong pursuit, if possible; netball is no exception. Netball is inclusive of all levels of ability, including

14

THE PADANG MAY / JUN 2021

athletes with a disability and is not gender specific (although boys are not able to play after the age of twelve until they are adults), and does not discriminate based on age. For the vast majority of people, sport is for leisure, fitness and friendship; we don’t stop having fun and enjoying our sports because we get older. While the young athletic females have the opportunity to rise to elite levels, there are still opportunities for older players to broaden their game beyond social netball and participate in Masters competitions, which welcome players both socially and competitively from the age of 35.

What is your favourite dish at SCC and why? My favourite SCC dish is Tandoori Achari Portobello Mushrooms. It’s new, and it’s delicious!

Why should Members join the Netball Section? Members should join the Netball Section because it is fun and inclusive. We are learning all the time, and (hopefully) always working on our fitness. We have a great coach, thanks Eric (thanks also to Jini and Nanthini and the Netball Section Committee for their wonderful input). We are very lucky to have two beautifully maintained courts at the SCC, where we can train and play. The Section has supported its Members throughout the pandemic, organising online get togethers, sporting challenges, and facetime games such as trivia. When training resumed, the enthusiasm to be a part is testament to the Section’s engagement with its Members and the comradery that exists. So if you have been thinking of joining the SCC Netball Section I would encourage you to give it a try. The SCC Netball Section has a place for everyone.

How did you get interested in cricket and what age were you? From the tender age of 5 years, my grandfather would take my brothers and I to the Padang. He would lay out a large oriental carpet on which we would sit, play and watch the cricket match that was going on. This went on for years. The game of Cricket was explained to us, we followed the contests that were taking place on the field, and the love affair with the game just blossomed over the years. Who would have thought then that I too would one day be a player on these hallowed grounds.

You represented and captained the Singapore national cricket team for a number of years. What special moments do you remember most fondly? The memories of playing League Cricket and representing the National Team are bitter and sweet depending on whether I wear the hat of the victor or the vanquished. There are too many memorable moments on the field to recount but what is most special of my playing days is that the Cricket community in Singapore was a very closely knit one. In spite of the intense and fierce rivalry on the field, we were friends, and to this day we have remained close. The values of camaraderie and esprit de corps which Cricket fosters goes beyond the heat of battle of the playing field.

You joined SCC in 1986. What led you to become a member? After my call to the Bar and return from London, I joined the SCC because it was the melting pot of the Singapore sporting community.

Cricket in Singapore has developed significantly in the last 15-20 years and much of that was under your Presidency of SCA. What pleases you most about where cricket in Singapore is today?

Cricket is a character building sport. It should be developed on that theme and I believe the schools and parents will embrace it on that basis.

You have been on the Board of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 2008 and Deputy Chairman since 2017. This is a honour for a small sporting country like Singapore. How do you think can Singapore play a more significant role in global sports in general? You point out that I have had the honour of holding every major position over the years in the International Cricket Council including Interim Chairman; the credit for this goes to the fact that we as Singaporeans are moulded by a culture that if we decide to serve a cause we do so in a spirit of transparency, integrity and accountability. Ultimately this is recognised by those we serve. I am proud to wave the Singapore flag internationally and credit must go to what being “Singaporean” has made me.

Being Deputy Chairman of ICC is a huge commitment. What drives you to continue in this capacity and what changes would you like to see in international cricket over the next 10 years or so?

I am the person that I am today because of the values the game (Cricket) has imbued in me.

I don’t think it would be fair to say that Cricket developed in Singapore significantly under my presidency in the last 15 – 20 years. Cricket’s development and growth has been cyclical and subject to our nation’s demographic changes and the perceptions of how much time the Singapore parent was prepared to allow their children to participate in sports. What pleases me most of where we are today is that our technical skills have improved considerably and we are capable of performing and competing in the intentional arena, especially in T20 Cricket.

What developments to cricket in Singapore would you like to see over the next 10 years? The development I would most like to see in Singapore is for a full scale introduction of Cricket in our schools, and the promotion of Women’s Cricket with a view to putting Men’s and Women’s Cricket at a similar parity in the long term.

No one should hold a position unless he is prepared to accord it the time and effort to discharge obligations of the office he undertakes. What prompted me to serve as a cricket administrator is to give back to the game what it gave and did for me. Amongst other things, I am the person that I am today because of the values the game has imbued in me. I got my one and only job because of Cricket, my deep friendships arose from Cricket and the metaphors by which I live life are associated with Cricket. What I can now give back to the sport is but a small measure of what it has done to enrich my life.

For our younger members who hope to play sports at the highest level, what advice would you give them? “You can’t win unless you learn how to lose”. To play is more important than to win. The bright side of defeat is that you learn to rise from it.

If you could invite five sports people past or present, to SCC for dinner, who would they be? The only three people I would invite are the three groundsmen of SCC, SRC and CSC from the days I played league cricket; men who took great pride in tending their grounds with love and reverence and making it possible for the cricketing community to play and enjoy Cricket over the years.

Describe what SCC means to you in a sentence? Camaraderie, espirit de corps and fraternity.

SCC Dads & Kids

For Father’s Day this year, our SCC kids tell us all about their great dads while our dads share their thoughts on fatherhood.

Father-son duo Robin and Benjamin Khoo are both in SCC Tennis teams; Benjamin himself started out very early and was one of the youngest JSMs accepted into the Club.

BENJAMIN KHOO - 13 YEARS OLD How are you and your Dad the same? When we do something, my dad and I are both very focused and would try our best to complete and execute that certain task well. We are also very relaxed and can handle a lot of pressure in stressful situations.

What is one great thing about your Dad? My dad is a very motivational person as he always cheers me on during the match. He would also tell me what I’ve done well after the match and the things that I can improve on in the future.

Is there anything you have learnt about your Dad from playing tennis with him? I have learnt many things from my dad when playing. For instance, he teaches me how to analyse and strategize when playing any opponent. In addition, I learnt that I must have good sportsmanship before, during and after the match.

Is there a particular thing you tell / do for your father before he competes in a match? I would tell him not to give up and push to his best efforts. But most importantly that he should have fun and play and enjoy his match with his opponent.

What is one memorable thing that your Dad has said to you? The most memorable thing that my dad said to me was actually to do with tennis. He told me, ”The next point is the only thing that you need to think about.”

ROBIN KHOO How did both you and your son get involved in Tennis? For me it was through friends that I knew who played tennis. I started tennis when I was around 13 to 14 years old. For Ben, we introduced tennis to him when he was just 3.5 years old. Fast forward to now at 13, he’s a JSM playing for SCC C team. And to think I just started playing tennis at this age then. Time flies when you’re having fun!

Is it important that your family has a place to go to and enjoy activities together? Yes it’s important that we do activities together and more often than not, it involves the tennis court. However, with my children’s packed schedule of tennis and studies, we seldom find time to do activities together, making this more important than ever.

Is there anything you have learnt about your son from playing tennis with him? Yes I have learnt that he takes the game seriously at training and matches but really lets his hair down when playing with his old man!

Is there a particular thing you tell / do for your son before he competes in a match? Yes I try to calm his nerves and tell him to relax and to pretend he is playing against me. I also tell him to wear his cap, put more sunblock and take his energy bar.

What are you most thankful for? I’m thankful for my son’s love for the game. It’s important that the driving force comes from him and it’s not forced. I’m also impressed by his ability to deliver when it really matters. At the end of the day he knows that it’s the effort and way he plays like in training that matters not the result. The result will take care of itself naturally.

What advice do you have for your son about his interests and future career? I would say: Just follow your heart and dreams and reach for the stars! The most important is to do what you like and keep on working at it. Be focused and never give up. This would apply to sports, studies or even his future career.

Say hello to the Slater family of cricketeers - with eldest son George training at the Padang while twins Madeleine and Henry also learning cricket at SCC Dempsey Field, and dad Lee serving as the Sat XI representative for the Cricket Section Committee!

GEORGE SLATER - 10 YEARS OLD

MADELEINE SLATER - 5 YEARS OLD

What is your favourite memory with Daddy?

What is your Daddy’s favourite food?

Going freediving in the Maldives where we swam with thousands of the manta ray. It’s a rare event that was being filmed by National Geographic (mass aggregation) It was just me and Daddy swimming together and we were far out to sea - it was super cool and super exciting; we free dived into a manta ray vortex and there were huge manta rays circling all around us - I will remember it forever!

Lettuce and spicy things.

What is one word you would use to describe him? Loyal (I am not allowed to say sweaty as this is a polite magazine :) )

If you could go anywhere with him for the day, where would you choose and why? There are lots of exciting places to go but honestly, if I could choose anywhere, I would go and see the grandmas with him in England - we could go walking in the countryside and do lots of nice things together in the outdoors.

What does he like to watch? Movies & cricket & more cricket.

How does Daddy make you feel special? Cuddles & kisses but he is spiky! He also plays cricket with me and we go walking in the park and swimming together.

HENRY SLATER - 5 YEARS OLD What does Daddy like to do? Likes to do exercise and drink beer!

What does he always tell you? “Go to bed!” “Eat your food!” Oh and, “catch the ball.”

What is your favourite thing about Daddy? He plays cricket with me.

LEE SLATER What is something that you had as a child that kids today don’t have? Patience?! We had an enormous amount of freedom & time outdoors -we used to go off on our bikes sometimes for the whole day. Whilst times have changed, what I do love is seeing them spending time outdoors -with my wife & I or just with their friends. Swimming, playing cricket or football or running - it is so good for them & makes them happier and calmer - so we have been increasing this as during the height of the lockdown we missed being outdoors and so we are making the most of it now. I love seeing them running around on the cricket field and throwing balls.

Was there, or is there, anything they watch or listen to that just drives you crazy? Sadly - and I am saying this through clenched teeth - Captain Underpants appears to be a firm favourite in our house

Any advice for fathers-to-be? I read somewhere recently that by the time they hit 18, you will have had 90% of the conversations you will ever have with them…so enjoy every sleep deprived minute! MAY / JUN 2021 THE PADANG

The active Goerojo family can often be found on the tennis courts, Padang field, or at The Courtyard relaxing together during the weekends. The three kids told us all about their Dad, who had his reactions to their answers!

MARTIN GOEROJO - 6 YEARS OLD What does Daddy like to wear? Martin Junior: Shorts and tee shirt. Martin Senior: Living on a sunny island is perfect for shorts and tee shirts. It makes one feel like one is on a perpetual holiday.

Where is his favourite place to go? Martin Junior: SCC. Martin Senior: The Padang, tennis courts and Courtyard have become a home away from home.

Which superhero do you think Daddy is most like? Martin Junior: The Hulk. Martin Senior: He must mean the calm version of the green man. I never get angry.

ANEŽKA GOEROJO - 8 YEARS OLD What is your Daddy really good at? Anežka: He is good at mathematics, tennis, golf, skiing and football. Martin: Well, I enjoy all of the above. I would not call myself good at any of those, but it is true that playing sports makes me happy and I enjoy solving P2-4 math quizzes. Ask me the same questions again in two years’ time when it is P6 maths though!

What makes him happy? Anežka: Spending time with us. Martin: True. Seeing the kids grow must be the most rewarding experience one can ever ask for.

What do you think Father’s Day is about? Anežka: I think Father's Day is about appreciating and loving them. Martin: How about the other days in the year? ;o).

ELIŠKA GOEROJO - 9 YEARS OLD What makes your Daddy laugh? Eliška: Making fun of us and himself and trying to speak Singlish. Martin: One can never takes oneself too seriously. Goes without saying that seeing people smile rather than frown makes everyone's day a bit better.

What makes you proud of him? Eliška: When he is able to make his own cup of coffee. Martin: But it does not taste half as nice as when someone makes the coffee for me.

For Father’s Day, Is there anything you would like to tell your Daddy? Eliška: I would like to tell him that I appreciate the times when he had to stay up late at night to help me with my mathematics. Martin: I think she meant 'patience' more then staying up late. Other parents may agree, there aren't enough hours in the day to cater to all the kids’ activities, homework and enough sleep.

MARTIN GOEROJO Is there anything you thought you’d never say/do when you became a dad that you find yourself saying all the time? It would probably be 'don't'. I reckon becoming a parent has led to a surge of starting a sentence with 'don't!'. “Don't play with that chair”, “don't put the toys on the table when you eat”, “don't play with my phone”, “don't dilly dally”, and the list goes on...

How do you balance having time for yourself, your family, friends, career, interests etc? I stopped trying. I do make it a point that family is included in what I do as much as I can. And the Club plays a pivotal part in our weekly routine and you'd often find me in the Courtyard with the three of them in tow.

What do you hope your children will most remember about you? Having loving parents and siblings that can count on each other.

ME MBER ENGAGEMENT

ALL IT TAKES IS A WILLING HEART by: Siddh Narayan Sharma, Canadian International School, Singapore (Grade 9)

With its aged corridors, brimming with hard-working volunteers, its many mountains of fresh produce, and its lively atmosphere, the Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen is an inspirational sight to those who visit. An e-newsletter from the Singapore Cricket Club had arrived the week before, announcing the Club’s call for volunteers in preparation for a visit to Willing Hearts, where families were invited to “spend a meaningful weekend morning bringing smiles to the community through volunteering”. My father Pushpendra Sharma leaped at this opportunity, promptly reaching out to Club staff in hopes of securing us a spot on the roster. The request was accepted, and the rest, as they say, was history. I woke up on an early Saturday morning at around 7:30, excitement practically flowing through my veins. This wasn’t my first encounter with community service, as IB students are encouraged to complete three service tasks every year through the ‘Service as Action’ curriculum. With this in mind, I’d already had a taste of the humbling gratitude that service cultivates in those who encounter it. After a swift grab ride to Singapore’s Kembangan sub-zone, we entered the Willing Hearts screening station, where we conversed with other Club Members and volunteers. I had the privilege of meeting SCC President, Mr. Zoher Motiwalla, who spoke to us about his past experiences volunteering at the soup kitchen. He shared an interesting anecdote about how when he volunteered previously for the food delivery schedules, they would drive around to the heartlands of Singapore - going to the areas where the underprivileged and elderly folks who need help stay. In these delivery visits, they would leave the food bags on hooks outside the HDB blocks. This anecdote got me thinking about how even when we serve, we must ensure the dignity of the recipients of our service. With that thought fresh in my mind, we entered the facility. After a temperature screening and disinfectant spray, my family and I were admitted into the mess hall, where we were requested to wear aprons, gloves, and hairnets before handling the food. We were efficiently escorted by Willing Hearts Staff to our respective stations, and instructed to prepare and pack styrofoam containers with hot food (steamed tofu, rice, eggs, and stewed vegetables). Despite our unfamiliarity with handling food in this manner, the more experienced volunteers introduced us to their efficient packing system in the form of an assembly line. Each individual was responsible for one portion of the meal, which streamlined the process. Roughly 180 fully-packed boxes later, our shift was complete and it was time for us to switch tasks. My mother and I wandered the halls for a few minutes, eventually stumbling across a large group of volunteers assembled around six tables. Each of them had a different vegetable in their hands, either peeling, chopping, or organising them. My curiosity piqued, I eagerly approached the table, promptly picking up a tool and a potato, and got to work.

40

THE PADANG MAY / JUN 2021

An hour passed sitting at the peeling table. I had chopped and peeled hundreds of vegetables (sweet potatoes, bitter gourd, regular potatoes and mushrooms), while simultaneously conversing with the other volunteers. I was surprised to see people from all walks of life working together in harmony - it seemed like our common goal unified us as a single creed, which was a very refreshing sight. One of the fondest memories of my time at the kitchen was my encounter with Uncle Lawrence, a Singaporean gent in his 70s who dedicated a large portion of his life to serving the Willing Hearts Community. Despite his occasional scoldings, his selfless presence shone through the room, commanding the respect of the volunteers. He regaled us with light (albeit unintentional) entertainment as we chopped away, addressing a 50-year-old volunteer as ‘young man’ and spouting statistics like “I’m 1.5 times older than you”. Interactions like these were what made this experience so unforgettable. Each task played a pivotal role, as the vegetables we chopped would later be used as ingredients in the evening preparations. I also gained some muchneeded perspective, as my work in the kitchens and chopping stations gave me a taste of what manual work could be like. I was especially glad to find out that the meals I prepared would feed migrant workers, and the disabled, low-income families, and others in need of hot, healthy & fresh meals. I am lucky to have had this experience that helped broaden my perspectives. By taking time out of my day to work hard in the kitchens I managed to ignite a flame of gratitude in my “willing heart”, as I used my own two hands to give back to society. I learnt that at the end of the day, our deeds unite us more than our individual titles, as when it storms and rains, it falls on us all the same.

Bowls

Convenor: Christian Huang | Article by: Candy Lai and Christian Huang

FROM NATIONAL HOCKEY PLAYER TO NATIONAL LAWN BOWLS PLAYER Amira Goh @ Philo was a national hockey player for 12 years till 1996. Although she was not actively looking for a new sport to play, she was persuaded by bowlers from SCC to try out the sport. Towards the end of 1999, she had her first roll and “it was love at first bowl,” said Amira. When Amira first started playing, she was often paired with Chai Hon Yoong, an experienced Section stalwart. “He was like a mentor and helped me to understand more of the game,” recalled Amira.

team at the 12th Asian Lawn Bowls Championship in New Delhi later that year. In the following year, she went on to win another Bronze in the Women’s Triples at the Asian Lawn Bowls Championship 2018 held in China.

Just a few months into the game, Amira earned her ticket to represent Singapore with Mary Lim, another veteran Section bowler, to play pairs and fours at the 2000 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Australia. That marked the start of her first international competition. She told herself, “I was still green so I had to learn fast!”

You could sense her first gold medal was around the corner and it could not have come at a better time than at the 2019 Philippines SEA Games. Together with Margaret Lim and fellow Section Member Shermeen Lim, they captured the Gold after beating an experienced home team. “I have always looked forward to playing with Shermeen and when I knew that we were going to play together, we were confident that we can achieve something together. I live near a school and every morning when I hear the National Anthem playing, I’ll imagine myself standing on the podium singing it. So winning the Gold was like a dream came true,” said Amira. “I was so emotional and couldn’t control my tears,” she added.

Things moved very quickly from there, with competitions both locally and internationally giving her insurmountable experience. “The President of Bowls Singapore then brought in a coach and that was when I learnt a lot more about my game,” said Amira. From playing lead, she was tasked to skip the Fours team in the Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Cup 2000 held in Brunei. Amira’s first bowls medal was a bronze at the 21st Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur in 2001. Amira also enjoys her time playing social bowls with her Section Members. She rarely misses the annual Section tour to the Tattersalls tournament in Australia. “SCC was the only Club to be given the exception for lady bowlers in the male-dominated tournament. I got to play with the men and retired interstate bowlers. It was a learning curve for me and that helped to progress my game further.” After a long hiatus, Amira rejoined the national squad in 2017, making a winning return and capturing the Bronze with her Fours

Amira has set her sights for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and is working hard towards it. “It is important to support one another in the team games and stay focused. Shermeen always encourages us and it is good that the young people are teaching us to stay positive.” An advice that she always remember and keeps in mind during play is, “You never think of the outcome, think of the process of getting there.”

SCC DRAWN TRIPLES We decided to kick off 2021 with a Triples tournament instead, allowing for more interaction which was far lacking in a weird 2020. Amongst the 36 Members who registered were current and exinternational bowlers who had graced the Commonwealth Games and World Championships, Section stalwarts, but also nine who had been bowling for two years or less. The pandemic meant numbers on the green remains restricted and hence schedules had to be staggered, but we have our Members to thank for their full cooperation.

Christian’s team holding a slender one shot lead on the 13th end. There was nothing much between the teams after, but a few crucial conversions by Christian and some unfortunate near misses by Rosemary led to the former winning the tournament by two shots at almost 9pm. Things were quickly forgotten when we hit the Courtyard for drinks, arriving to cheers and appreciation for both team’s efforts.

Quality of play throughout was high, with results showing no teams were pushovers. The final semi-final spots were only cemented on the last round-robin games. In Group A, Mary’s exquisite draw against Ganesh’s team on the last end gave her team a crucial win to top her group and earned a matchup against Christian’s team from Group B, which earlier made light work of Melvin’s team. Devi and her team’s consistent showing in Group A was rewarded with a second place finish and an encounter with Rosemary’s impressive team, who went through the group stages unbeaten. The semi-finals was a much anticipated affair, with nothing much on paper between the teams. Christian and Rosemary’s team raced to good leads before a lightning warning suspended play for 45 minutes. Unfortunately, Mary’s team were unable to pick themselves up after and succumbed 7-23 to Christian’s team. Devi’s team managed to refocus and kept plucking at their opponents, cutting their 3-13 deficit to go 13-13 before Rosemary’s team regrouped to triumph 18-13. The finals commenced against the hue of the setting sun, marking a fitting end to six weeks of immense games. Christian’s team quickly raced to a 8-2 lead. However, some inspired bowling by Rosemary’s team brought scores back to normalcy, with

Only two dart boards will be in play with a maximum of eight participants at each board, meaning a limit of 16 participants at each session. 2. No guests allowed. Only Section Members can play. 3. Please bring your own darts. No sharing of darts allowed. Section has a limited quantity of darts available on loan. Please return after use. 4. Usual safe distancing and masking guidelines to be observed. Shouting and singing is not allowed. 5. No food and drinks allowed at any time in the room. Football

SCC FOOTBALL ACADEMY GROWTH The SCC Football Section has a long history of engaging with young talents from various backgrounds. Youth football is one of the top priorities for our Section as we believe that we have to develop players from a very young age and also educate them on the SCC style of playing football. The collaboration with the Chelsea Football Club’s International Development Centre (IDC) has proven to be very beneficial as our trainees are guided by Chelsea FC Foundation International coaches from the UK. Three of our senior players, Abdullah, Deferdauz and Khairul Anwar, have been heavily involved with the SCC Football Academy, assisting the Chelsea coaches etc. We believe that it is important for our Members to be involved in the youth development process as this is a long-term project and we also aim to promote players from our academy to the senior teams. By engaging with them from the start, our Members will be able to guide the boys from our academy with their vast playing experiences and also from past coaching expertise. Here in the academy, our coaches place a lot of emphasis on the players’ personal development and character. We aim to instill values such as sportsmanship and camaraderie in our players. The academy is not just about developing their footballing talent. This mixture of skills acquisition and character are the values which our Club has been built on and has also been inculcated in all of our senior team members. In terms of football technical skills, our academy has been working tirelessly on our trainees’ basic foot work, techniques and engagement in 2-sided (4 v 4) games, as it is important for them to remain competitive and also apply the skills which they have been taught in a game-like situation. Our Academy now consist of almost 50 kids between the age of 5-10, and we are targeting to increase the numbers with a larger pool and older age groups by the end of the year.

Hockey

THRILL OF COMPETITION RETURNS The enduring effects of the global COVID19 pandemic has slowly become the norm. What most if not all sports enthusiasts missed during the last year and a bit is being involved in competition. The lack of competition has taken a toll on people’s need for thrills. Although we have been training on the Padang and the Hockey Village and 4v4 games has been a prominent feature of the sessions the yearning for “real” competition continue to persist. Our U19 Girls and Boys were the blessed few who have had the privilege of participating in organised sports from late January in the SHF U19 3v3 Championships. Together they played a total of 12 matches but both missed out of Semi-Final qualification due to their inferior goal difference. A total of 15 boys and girls from our section participated in the U19 3v3 and despite bitterly disappointed about not making the semi-final cut, they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Vivian Pfaff, who is a regular at all our training sessions was so worried that she would not be picked for some games due to us only being able to select 4 players per match. But the 14 year old German was ever grateful for the opportunity and said, “I am so happy to be able to play in a competition again and this is officially my first assignment with SCC as I joined after the season had ended in 2019. I was so hoping to help SCC win the title but the other teams were much older and that made a difference in the end. Can’t wait for the next competition to start.” Following the success of the U19 3v3 project, the SHF received many plaudits for their efforts to help bring back some semblance of normality surrounding hockey. With wind now firmly under their wings, the national hockey body has moved swiftly to organise the Men’s and Ladies Open in both Outdoor and Indoor formats. SCC Hockey has heavily participated in the ongoing trials of different formats, which includes some with goalkeeper, some as 4v4 and others with 3v3 with one sub and the novel 2 period of 3v3 with 1 sub and the final period of 4v4. All of which was highly enjoyable and the hockey was easy on the eye. Jo Tibbitt of the Ladies 1s was impressed by the 4v4 with goalkeeper format at Sengkang and enjoyed the fact that we could play normal rules with minute modifications to adjust to the smaller space and number of players. Together with her teammates, competition is what they all want to help tide this strange pandemic storm. Matt Dixon, who plays in goals was delighted with his outing couple of weeks back until a fairly well placed long shot breached his goal and denied him a clean sheet in a match SCC dominated against VJC. The diplomatic Briton is also eager to get back into the thick of the action and he will be joined in goalkeeping duties by National Goalkeeper Gugan Sandran who recently joined the club.

From left: Vivian Pfaff in good form at the U19 3v3; Fiona Herbert ever willing to get stuck in

On Indoor front, Fiona Herbert was so glad to get stuck right back into a competitive arena in the extremely humid Yishun Sports Hall court in their trial match against Crescent Hockey Club. Playing 3v3 and the 4v4 in the final third made her feel that this was actually almost normal and she is sure everyone who plays indoor will enjoy it. Equally satisfied with the outing was Arthur Picard who has been looking forward to more competition after his exploits in the U19 3v3. With both the Outdoor and Indoor leagues on the horizon, we will continue to train on the Padang on Mondays and Wednesdays and on the Sengkang AstroTurf on Fridays. However, the section felt that more games was needed to quench this insatiable desire for competitive hockey and we will be organising a 10-team Members League. Section Members have been divided into 10 teams based on the last digit of their membership numbers and we have named the teams based on all things Singapore as follows: Oriental Ones, Temasek Twos, Tembusu Threes, Farquhar Fours, Fullerton Fives, St Andrew’s Sixes, Sheares Seven, Expo Eights, Nanyang Nines and Zoological Zeros. We have organised 52 x 4v4 games on the Padang and will be getting the league sanctioned by the SHF and matches will be officiated by SHF umpires and a league table together with fixtures and results will be updated weekly and posted on the Hockey Section notice board. We hope to ensure all section members get out and play and help their respective teams scale to the peak of the Members League Table. We trust that given the limitations placed on all thing’s sports, we have done the best we can to ensure that the Thrill of Competition returns and members rediscover these joys they have missed so much.

Squash

Convenor: Rahul Khare | Article by: Jodee Lee

Some of the new Squash Section Committee Members - Robbie Lyons, Sarat Chandran, Rahul Khare and Ben Chandler - strike their best poses.

The Squash Section’s AGM was held on 6 February 2021. The increased social distancing measures and limits on physical attendance did not dampen spirits one bit, and the AGM was well-attended. Notably, this year saw Rahul Khare step up as the new convenor, and Eleanor Tan and Mark Evans step down from the committee. The rest of the committee members have been re-elected, some in different roles. New members (still energetic and not fully aware of the tasks ahead of them) have also been brought into the fold. The new team is looking forward to further the good work of the team handing over - starting 2021 activities even before the AGM, holding a Club Championship in January, resuming social squash in February, having a friendly with United Condos Squash Club in March and holding a Pre-season Tournament in April. Through each of these different activities, SCC squash players with diverse grades or preferences (whether for competitive or social squash) were kept active and on their toes throughout the first four months of the year. A hearty congratulations to the winners of the SCC Club Championships, Aaron Liang (Men’s Open), Au Yeong Wai Yhann (Women’s Open) and Mohit Lalvani (Men’s Open Plate), Team 5 and the Category Winners of the Pre-season Tournament, as well as the SCC team that did us proud at the friendly with UCSC! All that squash activity has put our players in the right condition for the upcoming National Squash League in May. For those that aren’t yet raring to go, there’s always the option of putting in a few extra hours down at the courts.

Tennis

The Tennis Section carried our momentum from the end of 2020 into 2021 and the Section Committee wasted no time in ensuring 2021 got off to a great start!

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2021 After a brief COVID-19 related hiatus, the Club Championships were brought back for 2021 and were held from 6-14 February. The tennis community of SCC was enthusiastic in their signups with 64 Members entering into the various categories. After a grueling week of non-stop tennis and extremely close finishes, we moved on to Club Championships Sunday. The Saturday prior saw a tough battle in the Ladies Social Final as Serene Goerojo narrowly edged Sally Brenchley 6-4 in the heat. The Mens Social Final kicked off Championship Sunday with some hard running and deft touches as Stephen Rhodes battled his way to a 9-4 win over Kevin Cumbers to lift the trophy. After their match, both men were able to join the patrons in The Courtyard to watch some exquisite tennis as both Mens and Ladies Open matches went down to the wire. Shaheed didn’t let his abdominal injury slow him down and he matched his more experienced opponent every step of the way. The tennis was downright spectacular at times as both men pulled out all the big guns from their arsenal to leave the socially-distanced tables breathless. Ultimately Guillermo showed his class with a 6-2, 6-7, 10-7 victory that left the crowd wanting more. As if that wasn’t enough, the Ladies final treated us to a battle of grit and determination under the searing sun as Rehmat Johal had to use all her experience to complete a comeback victory against her young opponent. Rehmat’s guile ultimately proved too much for Audrey as she completed a 3-6, 6-4, 10-2 win, following in the footsteps of her father Baljit who is a former 3-time Mens Open Champion. The Club Championships were a great success and the Tennis Committee is excited to bring more competitive tournaments on the SCC turf continuing with the Doubles Championship to be held in May/June!

BALL MACHINE AND FRIDAY SOCIALS The Section Committee would also like to announce that our new ball machine is available for booking on the Club-Member website for Members to refine their strokes! Lastly, our Friday Socials have been going strong and if any Member would like to join, please give us a shout to sign up. The last Friday of the month is Makan Kechil where tennis is followed by a night of food and drink so interested Members please do sign up!

SCC FOOTBALL ACADEMY

Article by: Chelsea FC international Development Centre

LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF, I AM STAMFORD THE LION Hi, my name is Stamford The Lion, one of Chelsea FC’s greatest ever signings, and I am in love with football! If you are new to the world of sports, do you know what kind of sport football is? It is a team sport that involves kicking a ball to score a goal. However, for me, it is more than that. It is a game that everyone can play that brings people together no matter their age, gender, nationality, ethical background, skills and abilities, etc. That is the beauty of football and it’s beauty can only be discovered once you start playing it. My home is Stamford Bridge in London, but I visited Singapore four years ago with our Foundation coaches to share our passion, purpose, and positivity for football to everyone. Let me tell you a secret, my second home in Singapore is in the heart of Tampines. Do you know UWCSEA East Campus? Yes, my home is located there and you can visit anytime! I am 100% sure that our coaches will warmly welcome you and we can play together in a safe environment at UWCSEA. One more thing, it is ok to start a beginner so do not worry if you think you cannot do it. It is ok if you cannot score yet like your favorite football players. You can learn at your own pace… No pressure. I want you to enjoy and gain comfort in football as you play. The Foundation coaches and I are here to support you when you need us and once you’ve decided to take your first step on your footballing journey and score your first goal, always remember that we are here cheering for you! Do you want to meet up? Let’s play football on Tuesdays from 17:30 to 18:30 at Dempsey and on Sundays from 10:00 to 11:00 at The Padang. The more the merrier so please feel free to bring your friends. The Foundation coaches and I are looking forward to seeing you all. If you want to contact me back, please email admin.cfcidcsg@uwcsea.edu.sg and I will reply as soon as possible. I hope we can play football together sometime. It is not too late to start learning about football, you won’t regret it and I can assure you that it will be totally FUNtastic! Take care and see you soon!

All the best, Stamford The Lion

Wine

Convenor: Naveen Gupta | Article by: Benjamin Hughes

MASTERCLASS: OLD VS NEW WORLD WINES On 22 March 2021, the Wine Circle held its first in-person event of the year, an educational workshop and wine tasting pitting oldworld wines against their upstart cousins in the new world. The class was held from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm in the Gilmour Room and was conducted by Dr. Jackie Ang, a WSET certified wine educator who holds the WSET Diploma and the French Wine Scholar qualification with highest honours. The course focused on red wines, and participants were able to sample ten different wines in five flights of tastings, each with an old world and new world take on the various grape varietals. For example, the first flight compared a wonderful Premier Cru Burgundy from the Cote de Beaune region in France with an excellent Pinot Noir from the Marlborough region in New Zealand. As Jackie explained, although these wines are made from the same grape, they have very different characteristics due to the differences in climate, soil and wine making. Participants also tasted and learned about wines made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah/Shiraz, Grenache as well as other varietals and blends. Throughout the masterclass, Jackie provided an excellent lecture with fascinating information about the origins of different grape varietals and the differences in style of old and new world winemaking. He also provided useful tips on wine tasting, storage and food pairing. Some participants were surprised to learn that some of the new world wines were better than their old-world counterparts, while others found that they still preferred their old favorites. But all agreed that they learned a great deal and enjoyed the evening, particularly as the course progressed and more wine was consumed! After attending the session, many participants requested that we hold additional courses focusing on different wines. Given its success and the fact that it was fully booked so quickly, the Wine Circle is planning to run this masterclass again later this year to give more Members an opportunity to participate. In addition, the Circle also plans to conduct a similar class focusing on white wines, along with other events. Subject to pandemic limitations, the Wine Circle will do its best to accommodate as many of its Members as possible. The cost of the masterclasses was $48 for Wine Circle Members and $98 for other SCC Members, inclusive of course materials, wine and snacks thus offering tremendous value to the Circle Members. The Wine Circle Committee is making significant efforts and hopes to attract more SCC Members to join in for such fun and educational evenings, and of course for some excellent wine!
