President Singapore Cricket Club

O

n behalf of the Singapore Cricket Club, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Societe Generale SCC International Rugby 7s Tournament 2014 (67th Edition), to be held on the weekend on 31 October to 2 November. I write this message with mixed emotions – for being honoured to represent this prestigious Club as President but at the same time, a heavy heart with the passing of our incumbent President, A Michael Grice on 24 August. Mike has been one of the stalwarts of the SCC 7s and his absence will surely be missed. However, I am sure he would have been proud, as how I am now, to see this tournament reach to yet another success. This year, we welcome 21 teams to the SCC 7s, heralding from all over Asia, Australia and the World. We also welcome several new teams from France – Grenoble University and Stade Francias, as well as teams from across the Causeway – Iskandar Raiders. Former team champions UK’s Penguins (2010), Fiji’s Daveta (2011 & 2012) and Australia’s Randwick (1993) will also return to the Padang and of course, not forgetting home team, SCC and our

6

local representatives – the Singapore National Team and the Singapore Barbarians – all will battle for the coveted Ablitt Cup. 2014 will also mark the first year in the SCC 7s history, to welcome our first Title Sponsor – Societe Generale. I would like to extend a personal Thank You to them and also to our other distinguished sponsors without whom this tournament would not have been possible. I thank and congratulate the SCC 7s Chairman, Marc Lansonneur and his Committee for the valiant effort and the SCC Management & Staff for their continued support to ensure a splendid weekend of great food, great drinks and fantastic rugby. A huge thank you to all members of the Rugby Section for all their assistance at the tournament. In closing, here’s wishing all players and teams the very best of luck. May the best team win! And, to Mike, wherever you are my friend, this tournament is dedicated to you.

O

n behalf of the Singapore Rugby Union I would like to congratulate everyone involved with this foundation tournament on yet another great rugby event that is held annually in the heart of Singapore’s historic and commercial district. The organisation of the tournament will undoubtedly be first class as will be the action on the pitch with some of the world’s best club teams among the field of 21. I am once again honoured to be invited to pen a welcome message to this tournament which is a foundation stone in the growth of rugby in Singapore. Singapore Rugby as a community is certainly entering some exciting times ahead, with the possibility of an International Rugby Board Sevens World Series event in Singapore being a reality by the time this message is published. The World Sevens Series is a catalyst for many on and off field developments to come, as the SRU looks at its wider strategic plan of using events to help develop our sport of rugby both locally and in the region. Events like our home grown SCC 7s will play an integral part in this event strategy, and I am glad to see the development and growth of the tournament year on year under the leadership of fellow volunteers such as Chairman Marc Lansonneur and his team. The SCC 7s continues to grow in stature both regionally and globally as well, and I for one hope that both the SCC 7s and the SRU will continue to work hand in hand for the greater development of rugby in Singapore. To be the standard bearers of elite club

10

7s competition is no mean feat and I congratulate the SCC 7s Committee on their hard work, often as volunteers, to make this tournament a success. It is with great sadness in August that we mourned the sudden passing of A. Michael Grice, incumbent President of the SCC General Committee at the time. I had the honour to serve with Michael when he was Vice President of the SRU in the management committee and we all certainly will feel his spirit watching down on us this weekend. Mike was a good friend to Singapore Rugby, and it is heartening to note that his favourite tournament, the SCC 7s, has dedicated the tournament to his memory. With Rugby making a return to the 28th South East Asian Games next year in Singapore, our Men’s 7s team as reigning bronze medallists have the opportunity to have a ‘dress rehearsal’ by playing in this weekend’s SCC 7s and I know that the home crowd will support in union our Team Singapore Rugby boys, as well as the hosts, the Singapore Cricket Club. This is the time for us as a community to cheer both the men and women on in their journey to the gold medal next year in June at home in the magnificent National Stadium. To compete against some of the best club teams from across the globe will certainly be the dress rehearsal our men need on the road to gold! Once again congratulations to all on a great tournament organised that will be played, and we look to your continued support of Singapore Rugby.

Singapore Cricket Club Chairman, Games Control Board

I

am delighted to welcome all players of the 21 teams from 9 countries, our kind sponsors, our wonderful volunteers, supporters and fans of rugby, to our Societe Generale-SCC International Rugby 7s Tournament 2014. This will be the 67th year since the inception of these Rugby 7s. The SCC is very proud to host, yet again, this long-standing tournament at the Padang. It is often referred to as the “crown jewel in SCC’s sporting calendar and it certainly is the largest in terms of actual financial outlay and international renown. The Rugby 7s, by its very nature, is a highly energetic and fast-paced sport and this is what enthrals the fans and supporters alike. That notwithstanding, there is also a clear demonstration of sportsmanship and camaraderie amongst players which is always very heartening to see and appreciate. In order to encourage youth development, the Rugby 7s tournament also features a Schools & Colleges 7s Tournament as well as a mini rugby tournament, organised by the SCC Rugby Academy. I have no doubt that these youngsters will, in no small way, be inspired by the world-class talent that will abound from the various international teams at these Rugby 7s. It will also provide the necessary opportunity for these young lads to play in front of large, fee-paying spectators which I am sure will go a long way in developing their confidence and character. Please allow me to take this opportunity to thank the R7s Organising Committee, chaired by none

12

other than our SCC Rugby Section Convenor, Marc Lansonneur, and the volunteers associated with his committee, which has worked hard for more than six months. The members of this committee are ably supported by our dedicated and hardworking Sports Department, led by Janet Ng, and the entire management team led by our General Manager, Nigel Stearns, in general, and Finance, F&B, Marketing & Communications, Property & Housekeeping departments, in particular. Most importantly, I would like to thank all our sponsors, in general, and our two main sponsors, Societe Generale (first title sponsor) and Asia Pacific Breweries, in particular, whose kind contributions have largely helped make this tournament the grand event that it truly is. I would also like to remember, in my message, our immediate-past President, Mr Anthony Michael Grice, who sadly passed away this year after only four months in office. His love for the Club and its sports as well as his contribution to the Singapore Rugby Union will certainly ensure that his presence is missed by many at this tournament. I wish everyone an enjoyable, exciting and funfilled weekend and please remember to support the tournament by buying Rugby 7s merchandise at the stalls in the Tournament Village over the weekend. Whilst I am sure Daveta will be looking to win the Ablitt Cup for the third time in 4 years (having won it in 2011 and 2012), I wish the all the teams well and may the best team win!

Being inspired by special people...

W

elcome to the Societe Generale SCC International Rugby 7s Tournament, as friendly as always.

This year, 67th edition of the tournament, we are glad to welcome Societe Generale Bank as our title sponsor. Societe Generale has increased its active involvement in Asian Rugby, and we are honoured it has chosen the SCC7s as one of their flagship in Asia. Chairing the SCC7s and working so closely for months with the Organising Committee members, the SCC Rugby Section, the Club management and staff, in order to deliver this 67th edition of the oldest rugby tournament in Asia, is a very rewarding experience. It is an exciting journey which gave us the chance to meet and work with special people with the same passion about the SCC, rugby and its development. A. Michael Grice, our late SCC President, was one of these very special people. Besides his long and continuous support to this the tournament, Michael has inspired and mentored us for many years. Michael would have been proud to see and experience the programme of this year’s tournament. 21 top class teams will compete this year for the Ablitt Cup. With top contenders coming from 10 different countries again back in force on the Padang. They will be seriously challenged by new joiners such as Stade Francais and Grenoble Université from France. The Singapore national side, in preparation for South

14

East Asian Games, will surely show their skills and ambition at the tournament. As for the layout of the village and stands, we have duly noted your valuable feedback and used it to further enhance the layout of the corporate boxes and the entire tournament experience in general. The Padang will surely be the place to be on the weekend, starting with a big Halloween party, with music and dance on Friday evening. Michael would have been pleased to watch the SCC Rugby Academy and the Schools and Colleges Cup finals and congratulate these promising young lads. He would have enjoyed welcoming all our sponsors and their guests. Throughout the weekend, while watching rugger, he would have shared some great conversation, and of course drinks with them. On the final day of the tournament, he would have felt honoured to present the trophies to the winning teams and players. And finally, he would have been proud, at the tournament dinner, to thank and congratulate all the people involved in organising this tournament. Despite his absence, let’s honour him in our memories and let’s have another a great tournament – with great competitive games, good fun with our friends, guests, families and enjoy this unique moment together on the unique Padang, When the best team will raise the Ablitt Cup, let us share the moment with a deep thought for Michael.

THE ABLITT CUP

SITHAWALLA CUP

The Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) International Rugby Sevens has attained the status of the region’s premier international club tournament. Teams are invited from around the world to play for the prestigious Ablitt Cup. The Ablitt Cup is named after Bernard E. Ablitt who was Convenor of the SCC Rugby Section from 1931-1932. From 19381939, he was the President of the SCC. The silver Ablitt Cup was donated by Mrs Katherine Parentis in 1947 for the winners of the first seven-a-side tournament organised by the SCC Rugby Section. The club tournament has since become an annual competition and one of the world’s oldest rugby sevens tournaments.

The Sithawalla Cup is another prestigious Cup given away at the R7s tournament to the Under-19 college competitors. This cup is presented by our former SCC President Mr H. M. Sithawalla.

JOHN CLARK SHIELD Singapore Schools compete for the John Clark Trophy. This is an award donated by friends of the late John Clark, a rugby stalwart and one-time Vice President of the SCC. John Clark was born in Penang in 1935 and, after an education in the UK, returned to life in Asia. Rugby was his passion and some of his happiest days were spent on the Padang in the 1960s where his generous advice was valued by the younger rugby players of the era. 16

LEN FOSTER TROPHY Len Foster was a former President of the Singapore Cricket Club. He was a great proponent of Rugby Youth Development within the SCC. He was also an ex-player for the Club, and recognized the importance local youth development as the future for rugby. He was a prime mover in re-igniting the SCC Colts programme within the Rugby Section and also in steering development projects in tandem with the mission of the SCC International Rugby 7s. The Len Foster Cup is presented for the Under-14 category of the Schools & Colleges tournament, and was named in Len’s honour in 2009. This is in celebration for his tireless passion for developing youth development, and constantly believing in rugby’s young talents.

THE SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB

HERITAGE TRAIL E

stablished in 1852, the Singapore Cricket Club is today a premier sports and social club in Asia. It is the second oldest sports club in Singapore, junior by 10 years to the Singapore Sporting Club, now the Singapore Turf Club. The Club stands at the centre of the city’s colonial heart, a public space that has witnessed many of Singapore’s triumphs and defeats, upheavals, independence and, finally, the annual National Day Parades on 9 August. Nearby historic buildings include Raffles Hotel, St Andrew’s Cathedral, City Hall (on the steps of which the Japanese surrendered to the British in 1945), the Old Supreme Court (to re-open with City Hall as the National Art Gallery of Singapore in 2014), Old Parliament House (now the Arts House), Victoria Theatre and Memorial Hall, and Empress Place Building (formerly government offices and now the Asian Civilisations Museum). Cricket was played on the Padang as early as 1837, only 18 years after Sir Stamford Raffles founded the settlement of Singapore in 1819, but it was not until 1852 that the first meetings were called to discuss the formal establishment of a cricket club. There have been no fewer than three clubhouse buildings on the Padang, the first erected some time in the 1860s, the second in 1877. The third pavilion, which forms the core of the present Clubhouse building, was built in 1884. It was extended in 1907, and the northern and southern wings that we see today were added in 1922.

Humble Beginnings

The Club’s beginnings were quite humble, with the first 28 Members in 1853 being mostly men working in the British business and mercantile community, usually as clerks or “junior assistants”. In the 1880s, however, membership had grown to almost 400 and was seen as a social feather in the cap, not only by the businessmen who founded the Club but also by the power-brokers and decision-makers in government. Presidents in the early days of the Club included several governors of the then Straits Settlements: Sir Cecil Clementi Smith (SCC President, 1883, Governor, 1887-1893), Sir Frank Athelstane Swettenham (SCC President, 1902-1903, Governor, 1901-1904) and Sir Arthur Henderson Young (SCC President, 1909-1910, Governor, 1911-1920). It was not all cricket on the Padang. A popular 18

event almost up to World War I was the SCC Annual Sports, and the SCC Athletic Sports were an integral part of this programme up to 1900. Football of both sorts, soccer and rugby, was established in Singapore in the 1880s, while an annual tennis tournament was initiated in 1875. Hockey arrived

early in Singapore, in 1892, considering that the rules of the game had been established in Britain only in 1849 and the English Hockey Association established only in 1886. Billiards was no doubt played at the Club, but it is seldom mentioned in existing records. Lawn bowls began at the Club in the 1870s, and the tournaments were held regularly from 1898. Membership of the Club had reached 878 by 1914. World War I affected Singapore sport badly, however (although the crown colony was not directly involved in the conflict), and the supply of sporting “manpower” was sharply reduced. Cricket suffered in particular, and in 1922 the Club was unable to make up a full team to send to play in Hong Kong. Morale must have been improved by the visit, in 1927, of Charles Gordon Macartney and his Australian cricket XI. Macartney’s team, which included eight Test cricketers, actually lost one match, against Malaya. Another major cricketing event occurred 10 years later, in 1937 — a three-day match by Malaya versus Sir Julien Cahn’s XI, the first English cricket team to visit Malaya or the Singapore Cricket Club. On 15 February 1942, Singapore fell to the Japanese, and most Europeans who had not escaped were interned. The Club was closed for the duration of the war. Even after Singapore was liberated, in 1945, it was clear that life in the crown colony would never be the same again. Elections in 1959 were won easily by Lee Kuan Yew’s People’s Action Party, which proceeded to form a strong majority government in a self-governing Singapore. It was reported that the new government

was considering taking back the Padang from its lessees, the Singapore Cricket Club and the Singapore Recreation Club. In the event this did not happen, but the government did insist, in 1962, that all clubs in Singapore maintain at least 50 per cent Singaporean membership.Prime Minister Lee made his first official appearance at the Club in 1963, when his wife presented the Lee Kuan Yew Shield to the Club’s ladies’ hockey team. He returned in 1970 to accept the honorary title of “Visitor” to the Club.

Significant Events

Between 1959 and the early 1970s, numerous cricket teams of Test or first class standard visited Singapore and graced the Padang. The most notable of these were: • The Australian Test team to India and Pakistan in 1959. • The MCC team to New Zealand in 1961. • Ron Roberts’ Commonwealth XI in 1962. • E.W. Swanton’s Commonwealth XI in 1964. • Joe Lister’s International XI in 1968. • The MCC XI on its East African and East Asian tour in 1970. The Indian and Pakistan Test teams returning from their tours of Australia in 1968 and 1972 respectively also visited Singapore. Unfortunately, their one-day fixtures were washed out. Although the future of the Club looked grim during the 1960s, because of declining membership, financial difficulties and the possibility of government action, it survived (largely because of the sterling work

FEATURE of Club President Andrew Gilmour, after whom the Gilmour Room is named), and during the 1970s and 1980s it began to prosper once more. Concern for the community became a hallmark of the Club during the 1980s, the most outstanding example of this being an SCC Extravaganza charity day in 1984, in which year Singapore celebrated 25 years of self-government. The event raised $285,000 for the Community Chest of Singapore. Seven-a-side rugby teams had competed for the Ablitt Cup since as long ago as the 1940s, but it was not until the 1980s that the SCC Rugby Sevens was expanded to become a truly international competition. The SCC Soccer Sevens has become an equally popular annual event, and in 1991 it was enhanced by the presence of British soccer stars Gordon Banks, Bobby Charlton, Roger Hunt, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters (all members of the England team that won the 1966 World Cup), Mike England, Pat Jennings, Kevin Keegan and Tony Woodcock. The highlight of 1991 was the visit of Singapore President Wee Kim Wee on 6 December, and his acceptance of honorary membership of the Club. Another event in 1991 of interest in the context of the Club’s history was the discovery of the oldest sports trophy the Club has in its possession — a Challenge Cup presented to the Club by ViceAdmiral C.B. Hamilton and officers of the British ships visiting Singapore in 1887, in commemoration of the many games the British Navy had enjoyed on the Padang.

another Kiwi legend, Tana Umaga, won the Ablitt Cup at the Padang. The status of the Club as a premium institution in Singapore was again underlined when Mr S.R. Nathan — a long-time member of the Club — was elected President of the Republic of Singapore in 1999. The millennium year saw a complete re-turfing and repair of the Padang field, including an improved drainage system. The year was also marked by the courtesy visit of His Royal Highness Prince Norodom Ranariddh from the Kingdom of Cambodia. In 2002, the Club celebrated its 150th anniversary with a year of festive activities organised by the specially formed anniversary committee. Among the highlights of the anniversary year was a charity golf match attended by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Mrs Goh. The anniversary celebrations culminated with a gala dinner at the Padang on 5 October.

Anniversaries And The Future

In 1992, the Club celebrated its 140th anniversary and organised various functions to raise funds for charity as part of the celebrations. The most memorable event was the 140th anniversary party held on the Padang on 30 October, which was graced by President and Mrs Wee. An SCC Hockey Sixes competition was inaugurated in 1992. In October 1993, the Singapore Cricket Association organised the first International Cricket Sixes tournament on the Padang, in which teams from 10 countries participated. On 29 May 1996, the Club passed several landmark resolutions — to embark on a $60 million Clubhouse redevelopment that will involve building two storeys underground, create a new class of transferable membership and give women full membership for the first time in the history of the Club. In November 1997, the Club started offering a new class of transferable membership. In the late 1990s, the SCC International Rugby Sevens attained the status of a top international club tournament. In 1998, the New Zealand Rugby Sevens Commonwealth team featuring rugby legend Jonah Lomu visited the Club and played on the Padang. In the same year, Petone from New Zealand, featuring 20

A week later, on 12 October 2002, a terrorist bomb in Bali tragically killed eight Club Members who were visiting the island to represent the Singapore Cricket Club in the annual Bali International Rugby 10s tournament. On 1 December 2003, a year after the 150th anniversary, a Special General Meeting of Members approved the most extensive Club renovation since 1922. Work was completed three years later, and on 2 February 2007 the Club held a dinner to celebrate the renovation. The guest of honour was Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who accepted the title of “Visitor”, making him the second recipient of that honorary title after Lee Kuan Yew in 1970. Today, the Club boasts a total of some 5,939 active Members, of whom 3,285 are voting Members. There are currently 13 Sports Sections in the Club, the largest being Golf (501 Members), Tennis (515) and Squash (371).

THE CONSUMMATE CLUBMAN ANTHONY MICHAEL GRICE 29 October 1943 — 24 August 2014

A

nthony Michael Grice was his full name, but to us he will always be known as Mike. Mike Grice expressed, by the way he lived his life, the very best of the SCC. Mike’s passion and commitment embraced the entire Club, to whose overall interest he was always dedicated. He demonstrated this passion and commitment during one general meeting, when the Club was discussing whether or not to change a rule. One member asked the GC to explain what they understood the core values of the Club to be. Mike leapt from his chair, declared, ‘I can answer that,’ and for the next 10 minutes, pacing across the floor, he held the meeting spellbound, with a heartfelt and compelling exposition of the values for which the Club should stand. Mike was born in 1943 in Yorkshire, England, but made his life, by choice, in South-east Asia. Coming out to this region to work for a trading company, he joined the SCC in 1970, and embraced all the Club had to offer. Over the years he was heavily involved, on and off the pitch, in all the major field sports of the Club. Just as the young businessman working for Procter & Gamble grew into the independent businessman building the successful firm of Dawnridge Sports, so too did the young Saturday XI cricketer grow into the devoted umpire of later years. Notwithstanding Mike’s very personal understanding of LBW, the soccer, rugby and cricket sections all gained a great deal, for a long time, from his personal commitment to their many endeavours. He was especially keen to develop the sporting talent and enthusiasm of younger people, and as one of the real pioneers on the issue he played a crucial role in helping to build the Club’s commitment to junior sports and junior sports membership. Mike’s devotion to the Club and to sports brought well-deserved recognition in 2010 when the Club made him a Life Member, and he found himself, after years of insisting he would never do any such thing, sitting on the General Committee. He made a very personal mark here as well, in so many ways. Such concepts as spending quality time with good friends who share common interests, pursuing excellence on and off the pitch, learning through sport such important life values as fair play, team work, sportsmanship, perseverance and integrity —when Mike spoke of them he made them all seem so real, because to him they were so much more than just words.

Anthony Michael Grice

It was surely right and proper that Mike’s last voluntary duty to the Club he loved so much was to lead it as our President. And it is perhaps some small comfort that Mike spent his last day with us presiding over a successful tournament in our signature sport. Mike Grice was simply irreplaceable, as our President, a devoted member, a steadfast and reliable comrade, and above all as a friend. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go to Winnie and to Michael’s family. The baton he carried so well now passes to all of us.

Mike & the SCC 7s

Mike was a devoted supporter of both the Rugby Section and its signature event, this annual 7s tournament. Whatever needed to be done, year in, year out, he could be counted on to pitch in, full bore. Whether it was working in the Eagle’s Nest providing public address announcements and commentary, or helping with scorekeeping and administration, or acting as liaison to teams, this lifelong fan of rugby union was always a reassuring fixture at this great event. Mike’ s commitment to rugby extended to years of service in the Singapore Rugby Union as well, at various posts, and there were few people who could claim to be as involved with rugby in both club and country as Mike Grice. This year’s tournament will sorely miss its biggest fan.

2013 IN REVIEW 66TH SCC INTERNATIONAL RUGBY 7S 1 TO 3 NOVEMBER 2013

P

acific Islanders give master class in Sevens rugby as Asia Pacific Dragons beat Penguins to take the Ablitt Cup at SCC 7s. What a fabulous weekend of world class Sevens rugby! The 66th SCC International Club Rugby Sevens Tournament featured some top-class rugby on the first weekend in November with newcomers, the Asia Pacific Dragons romping home against crowd favourites Penguins to take the Ablitt Cup for the first time. The weather was terrific, the rains stayed away and the full house enjoyed copious amounts of cold beers, a great atmosphere and some marvellous entertainment both on and off the pitch. With the competition stronger than ever before, even the Friday and Saturday Pool games produced some close encounters. In particular Pool A was very strong, with Auckland, Western Province and Sunnybank all playing hugely competitive matches and both Auckland and Sunnybank coming from behind to score winning tries with nothing left on the clock to beat a desperately unlucky Western Province Institute side and to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats.

24

The Asia Pacific Dragons, making their debut at the SCC Sevens, with four Fijian IRB Sevens internationals in their ranks plus IRB Sevens World Player of the Year, Samoan Mike Pesamino, impressed in the Pool round, cruising to victory against Northland, NS Wanderers and Impala and making their intentions clear that they had come to win the Tournament. Last year’s winners Daveta, also won all three Pool games against Aussie stalwarts Casuarina and Cottesloe and hosts SCC, and there was much talk of an-all Fijian Ablitt Cup final amongst the Guinness- fuelled experts in the crowd. It was also Casuarina Cougar’s 30th consecutive appearance at the Tournament, a remarkable achievement indeed. The Penguins also looked very strong with a handful of England and New Zealand IRB Sevens players in the squad and looked comfortable in Pool E, recording good wins against the France U20 team, East Arnhem and Perth club, Palmyra. The weekend was wonderfully enhanced with some schools rugby with the finals of the SCC Rugby Academy Digital Realty Cup with children

from U6 to U13 playing on the Padang as well as the finals of the SCC Schools & Colleges Tournament where six local schools battled it out in finals of the U14, U16 and U18 age groups. And so to finals day on the Sunday and the strongest eight teams moved into the quarter finals. Auckland were unfortunate to draw a rampant Asia Pacific Dragons in the first match, going down 357, before a strong Borneo Eagles team cantered to a 31-0 win over the young Frenchmen. Then came the surprise of the weekend. To say that Sunnybank were up for it in their match against Cup holders Daveta would be an understatement and they tore into the Fijians like a dog at a beetroot. In what was possibly the best game of the weekend in terms of physicality, Sunnybank edged ahead and just wouldn’t let Daveta back in, despite their best efforts, and when the final whistle went, Sunnybank were 19-12 up and in the semi-finals. Incredible stuff and one of the biggest shocks of the Ablitt Cup in recent years. In another very tight game, the Penguins squeezed past Northland from New Zealand 21-17, with the

Kiwis unable to convert their tries from the corner. It was always going to be difficult for Sunnybank to repeat their efforts from their Daveta win and they faced an improving Penguins side in the Cup semi-final, who despite losing England speedster to a horrific leg-break in the second half, ran out 36-14 winners. In the other Cup semi-finals, the APD’s cruised past the Borneo Eagles 31-7 to set the stage for an exciting Ablitt Cup Final. In the Bowl, the entertaining NS Wanderers team from Negri Sembilan in Malaysia overcame East Arnhem in the final game to win 15-14 and lift the trophy, a great result for SCC members Jonty Kay and Alex Chew who played their hearts out for the Malaysian team. The Plate final was an all-African affair played between Western Province from Cape Town and Impala from Kenya, and it was the boys from South Africa who won 17- 5, putting a tough Pool behind them, and playing some great Sevens rugby throughout Sunday to take a thoroughly deserved Plate win. And so to the Ablitt Cup final. With Penguins a mix of England and New Zealand, against the APD’s, predominantly Fijian with a star Samoan in the line-up, a highly anticipated Cup Final kicked off. It was clear from the outset that the Fijians had identified Penguins playmaker and Player of the Tournament, Sam Edgerley as the dangerman and by closing him down early, restricted Penguins open running style. It wasn’t long before the APD’s took a two try lead and it looked as if they would run away with the win, but Penguins came storming back, scoring a brilliant try in the corner to up the ante and show the mighty Fijians they weren’t going to roll over. A try on the stroke of half time by Samoan Pesamino gave the APD’s a big advantage at the break and in the second half, they ripped the tiring Penguins apart with Player of the Final Pesamino scoring a hat-trick as they ran-out 43 – 5 winners in a superb display of Sevens rugby. A brilliant end to a fantastic weekend for players and spectators alike. Beers were consumed in abundance, old friendships were renewed and new friendships were made in the warm and friendly atmosphere as the sun came down on another cracking weekend of sport at the Singapore Cricket Club. Rugby truly was the winner.

2014 PREDICTIONS W

elcome to the Societe Generale Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby Sevens Tournament, 67th Edition! Once again we have a fabulous tournament in store and a full weekend of world class Sevens. So sit back, crack open a cold one, marvel at what a unique setting we are in and most of all enjoy the rugby! With the absence of last year’s runaway winners, the Asia-Pacific Dragons, the big question on just about everyone’s lips will be “Who will lift the coveted Ablitt Cup” in 2014? Beaten finalists last year and previous winners Penguins return and will be hoping that the coaching expertise of Australian Michael O’Connor and Kiwi Tony Hanks will be able to mould a squad of players including several IRB Sevens players from Australia and England, into a winning team. Crowd favourites Daveta from Fiji, who suffered a shock quarter final loss in 2013, will also be back with a vengeance determined to regain the Cup they won in 2012. With the full support of Max Norris and Presidio Capital, Daveta will have some superb Fijian sevens talent in their ranks and will surely be up there in the Cup final on Sunday night. The 2014 Tournament sees several new teams making a first appearance at the SCC Sevens, two of whom will be fully expecting to be challenging for silverware on Sunday. Stade Francais from Paris, one of the world’s most colourful and famous clubs with a wonderful history over the years make their SCC debut with up and coming Sevens players from

30

By Andy Douglas

France, and players who have represented England and Spain at IRB Sevens. Their appearance also sees a return to the Padang for Stade Francais’ inspirational Deputy Chairman Richard Pool-Jones, the ex-England No.8 who was part of the Cambridge University touring squad who played at the SCC Sevens in 1992. He will be watching from the stands this year so hopefully no early bath like in 92. The other newcomers who will be expected to do well are YCAC Tradition from Tokyo who will be bolstered by players from New Zealand including SCC Sevens Player of the Tournament 2010, Warwick “Wiz” Lahmert, who went on to play IRB Sevens for New Zealand. Under the experienced guidance of the wily coach, Simon Ryan, YCAC could be the real surprises of the weekend. Another club that will be reinforced by talent from New Zealand will be Borneo Eagles who have had great success with combining local Malaysian talent with Kiwi imports and they could be a real threat in the Cup this year, certainly capable of knocking out one of the big names. Sunnybank from Brisbane pulled off one the biggest shocks of SCC Sevens in recent years last year when they ousted Daveta in the Cup quarter finals only to go down in the semi-final to the APDs. But they now know what it takes and Director of Rugby Gaven Head will be hoping for a proper crack at the title. The other big Australian challenge will most likely come from one of Sydney’s most famous clubs,

Societe Generale SCC International Rugby 7s Tournament 2014, 67th Edition

Randwick. The Galloping Greens have produced more Wallabies than any other club in Australia, and they should be fancied to make a strong showing. The France Development team is back again and we should expect some real flair and pace from what is mainly an U20 squad. The French youngsters will have the pace and fitness to go well but will they have the experience to mount a serious assault on the Cup. Also hailing from France, we welcome the Grenoble University Club to Singapore. A relatively unknown quantity, the students will be taking the Tournament seriously and if they can refrain from charming the ladies in the stands whilst smoking Gauloises, they could be dark horses for the Plate final on Sunday afternoon. A serious challenge for the Plate competition will come from Western Australia with rivals Cottesloe and Palmyra, who have significantly upped their game over the last few years and are both fully capable of knocking off a bigger team. They are most likely favourites for the Plate Final.

Casuarina Cougars from Darwin in the Northern Territories of Australia will also fancy their chances of lifting the Plate and will be fighting it out with their Australian rivals. The games between the Aussie clubs are always hard fought, combative, tight and always entertaining. The Swedish Vikings return for another year under the management of Anders Svard – they have been regular participants since 1996 – and won the Plate in 2012. They will certainly be aiming for more silverware and to celebrate on their long journey home. You never really know what you are going to get with the Kenyan club Impala Saracens. They have been fantastic supporters of the SCC Sevens over the years, quite brilliant some years but have struggled in others and we are hoping they will be strong, full of pace and passion to entertain the crowd and pull off a few shocks on the way – they could well be lifting the Plate trophy on Sunday night.

With last year’s first appearance under their belts the Neubok Sports Silverbacks will be better for the experience, especially if manager Jon Fonua remembers his alarm clock. Hailing from hardcore rugby league country in Sydney’s western suburbs, the Silverbacks will be fully committed on going further this year. Regulars East Arnhem will also have the Bowl in their sights in 2014 and will come fully committed to enjoy themselves on the pitch and off it. From over the border in Malaysia, come NS Wanderers from Negri Sembilan, last year’s Jug winners who will be expecting to go further in the Plate this year. We also welcome debutants Iskandar Raiders for the first time, the representative team from the Johor Rugby Union who will no doubt be wanting to impress on their first appearance. The three local Singapore teams will all be aiming for the Bowl title on Sunday afternoon. Under the coaching of Inoke Afeaki, the young Singapore National team, the Singapore Select, are progressing well with a medal at next year’s SEA games their main objective and SCC Sevens will be a good barometer of how they are developing. The Singapore Barbarians are made up of the top players from some of Singapore’s leading clubs with players from Wanderers, Bucks, and Bedok Kings all expected to play. Host club SCC have been training hard and much improved effort is expected this year especially with the speedy try-scoring machine Ollie Marchon on the wing. What a weekend in prospect! Do weekends get any better than this? First class club rugby and terrific competition between some of the world’s best club sevens players. Beer that never runs out. One of the most unique settings in club rugby in the world come Sunday evening. So enjoy the weekend, renew old friendships and make new ones. Sit back and enjoy the atmosphere and entertainment at the SCC. Life is good!

SCC RUGBY ACADEMY

T

he SCC Rugby Academy was founded in January 2012 by four Singapore Cricket Club Rugby Section members keen to offer the best possible playing and development rugby experience for children in Singapore from as young as five right up to the age of 14. We are delighted and honoured to be associated with this remarkable and iconic club, one of the oldest sports clubs in Singapore which is steeped in charm, tradition and history. The SCC Rugby Academy is open to Members and non-members of the Singapore Cricket Club and is intended to provide a real “club” opportunity for players who can, if they choose, have a life-long playing affiliation with the SCC and rugby. Training is on Saturday mornings at the Dempsey fields and there are regular opportunities to play and train on The Padang in the city centre – one of the most spectacular venues in rugby.

Our children regularly play against other clubs in Singapore and have toured to Hong Kong and Malaysia to compete in international competitions. All our coaches are IRB qualified and current players – this skill and passion for the game means our coaching staff are dedicated to ensuring our children improve but also learn the values of this great game-skill, teamwork , dedication, resilience and perhaps most importantly enjoyment. We also have managed to attract several ex- international players to come and run coaching clinics for our children and have a drink or two with our parents. We currently run several teams at several age groups from U5 up to U14 and also have a vibrant Girls Touch section for under 10,12,14 and under 18.Each age group has a head coach, assistant coach/coaches and a parent co-ordinator. As of September 204 , just over two and a half years after being set up, we boast a membership base of almost 275 children.

BEHIND THE WHISTLE:

THE TOURNAMENT MATCH OFFICIALS

By Matt Oakley MVO MBE

Befitting its reputation as one of the world’s premier international invitational 7s tournaments, the SCC7s needs and attracts quality referees.

U

ntil 7s started going ‘global’ from 2000 onwards, along with the 15s Game at the High Performance and Elite levels becoming ever more professional, our guest referees from oversees were largely 15-a-side exponents such as Derek Bevan, who refereed the 1991 Rugby World Cup Final. However, the 7s game is now moving at pace, literally, and so it is young legs and gas to burn that are required and in recent years we have benefitted from emerging referees on their way to professional careers at the top end of the Game. Of our more recent 7s referees alumni, Greg Garner, Luke Pearce and Tim Wigglesworth can now be seen on Setanta every weekend refereeing in the English Aviva Premiership, whilst Steve Walsh (Australia) and Jaco Peyper (South Africa) are in the world’s top 20. From more recent years, Matt O’brien (Australia) and Jason Jaftha (South Africa) are officiating the likes of Super Rugby; the Currie Cup and the IRB Sevens World Series – no doubt with one hopeful eye on being selected to referee at next year’s 2016 Olympic 7s in Rio. The SCC is delighted that our tournament helps aspiring referees to achieve such success in their careers. This year we welcome Richard Loten from the Auckland Referee Society. Richard is in the NZ National Wider Training Group and is seen as one of Auckland’s top 7s referees. As usual, we also welcome a referee each from the UAE and Hong Kong Referee Societies, who are Exchange Referees for two Singapore-based referees who then receive reciprocal invites to officiate in the annual Dubai and Hong Kong 10s/7s tournaments, including being Assistant Referees in the Sevens World Series events there. Also, possibly for the first time ever, the Padang will no doubt hear that famous cry “Monsieur L’arbitre!” as we welcome a guest referee kindly sent by the French Rugby Union (FFR) accompanying their development 7s squad in this year’s tournament. These referees are complemented by Singapore Rugby Union/Referee Society Referees; Assistant Referees and In Goal Judges; including Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) High Performance Panel members Azhar Yusof and Paul MacKay fresh from the 2014 Asian Games 7s in Korea and the Asian Rugby Football

44

Union (ARFU) 7s Series. The Club thanks the SRU as ever for this service, and long may the SCC7s remain the pinnacle event in many young Singapore referees’ annual calendar and a focus for their fitness, conditioning and continuing self-education. Assisting in the Referees Tent and the Technical Areas is former Club Member, John Nuttall (see photo), who returns again from the New South Wales Referee Society, along with Kim Short from Western Australia with Palmyra. The SCC7s’ endorsement by ARFU means that we have ARFU panel Citing Commissioners and Judicial Officers, who manage the tournament’s disciplinary processes meeting full IRB Regulation 17 standards. The tournament Match Officials are once again overseen by club member, Matt Oakley, who is himself an ARFU staff member. The SCC7s gives its referees an opportunity to interact with counterparts from major and minor rugby unions and referee top class 7s Rugby, plus make new friends for life. We wish all match officials a great weekend. The tournament couldn’t happen without them. Finally, if you are interested in refereeing (or sponsoring our match officials next year!), please feel free to approach Matt in the match officials area.

7S Law Variations Update

With effect from 14 May 2014 the IRB has clarified that all conversion kicks in any form of the Game must be taken on a line through the place where the try was scored in the field of play. This is to prevent the practice which had started in Sevens of players taking conversions ‘backwards’ from within the in-goal area. Sorry to our ball boys and girls you’re now going to have to chase every conversion into Connaught Drive and St Andrew’s Road. This is Law 9.B.1 (b) for the anoraks amongst our readers.

IRB Anti-Doping Awareness: Keep Rugby Clean

Looking for something to do between matches? If you haven’t already, the SCC7s Committee recommends to all players and support personnel that you surf and complete the IRB’s Anti-Doping e-learning programme on www.keeprugbyclean.com.

Palmyra and the SCC Sevens:

Palmyra have been one of the most loyal supporters of the SCC Sevens Tournament, with 2014 being the 32nd year of Palmyra’s participation, competing almost every year since 1983, winning the Plate in 1986,1992,1995 and 2006 and winning the Bowl in 1999 and 2005. Part of our tradition is to bring predominantly club players to Singapore, including at least two Colts age players within the squad to aid their development. The 2014 Palmyra Sevens Team is sponsored by Airland Logistics, Enerflex, FTI Consulting and Project Directors Australia. Go Pally!

DAVETA RUGBY Fiji From its humble beginnings in 1989 and subsequent emergence on the international club scene in 1992, Daveta Rugby has grown into one of the strongest international club sevens teams in the world. The team is well known for entertaining spectators both on and off the field with their athleticism, power, flare and great sportsmanship that was bred in the team’s homeland in the Fijian Rugby stronghold of the Nadroga province. Daveta has proven to be an extremely successful side winning 7s and 10s tournaments in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong with a highlight being the recent win at the World Club 7s in Ireland. Daveta is about more than just winning though. It has a long and proud history of providing development opportunities for Fijian players who may otherwise not experience competing against some of the greatest rugby players from around the world. The Daveta development programme employs a holistic approach to development with the view to the develop ‘rounded and grounded’ professional

athletes prepared for representation both on and off the field whilst providing opportunities off-field after rugby. The programme has resulted in a large number of players moving on to represent on the international stage in both 7s and 15s or moving into professional contracts in New Zealand, Australia and Europe. 2014 will be Daveta’s 23rd year participating at the SCC 7s having held the Ablitt Cup trophy on six previous occasions. Can 2014 be the seventh?

GRENOBLE UNIVERSITY RUGBY France The Grenoble University Rugby comprises a selection of the best players from the Universities of Grenoble, France. These players are mainly from the FC Grenoble and CS Bourgoin Jallieu and play in either a professional team or one of the Under 22 teams. In recent years, the Grenoble University Rugby had developed a policy focused on attending rugby sevens tournaments. In keeping with this philosophy, we have fielded a strong team for the past six years in the Safari Sevens, the largest rugby sevens tournament in the African continent. As a result, we have achieved very good results, we were the Cup finalist in 2011 (suffering defeat against south Africa), the Plate finalist in 2012 and the Bowl winner in 2013. In 2012 and 2013 we won the Geneva Sevens tournament. In 2013, we also finished as Cup finalist in the Benidorm Sevens tournament.

So far in 2014, we have been victorious at the Stanislas Sevens, the second largest 7s tournament in France and look forward to having a good outing in the SCC 7s in Singapore.

Japan Players: Kane Hancy, Warwick Lahmert, Matthew Moulds, Mark Atkins , Seta Tamanivalu, Matthew Clutterbuck, Warren Dunn, Adrian Bell, Simon Ryan, Ken Rudkin, Joseph Fisher & Steve Miles Rugby was first played at Yokohama Country & Athletic Club (YC&AC) in 1866, making it the oldest club in the Asia Pacific region. YC&AC, like our sister club SCC, is a multi-sport club and plays host in Japan to cricket, tennis, soccer and lawn bowls to name a few. The rugby section of the club has toured extensively, and in recent years has played in South America, Africa, Europe and throughout Asia. Earlier

in 2014, YC&AC were cup finalists at the Hong Kong Tens and regularly enter regional tournaments; however this is YC&AC’s first entry into the SCC 7s. Tradition YC&AC would like to thank the SCC for hosting and organising what we are sure will be a fantastic event. We also greatly appreciate the tremendous support of our sponsor Tradition, Asia’s leading interdealer brokerage firm.

PENGUINS United Kingdom The Penguins are looking forward to be back in Singapore again and this will be our 5th year in a row, since the two tournament appearances in the late 1990s. The team has a mix of English, Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Island players, with a high profile coaching duo leading the way. We had a great tournament last year, despite losing the Ablitt Cup final to the APD side of whom fully deserved the win. We are looking to go one step better this year and repeat our 2010 victory. One plus from last year was the performance of the England 7s players. A couple of them re-cemented themselves in the England 7s team, with Marcus Watson being the pick. During the course of 2014, the Penguins had been busy with a tour to Hong Kong to play in the Hong Kong 10s (the 10s team included a charity activity that raised HK$1.2million for children in Vietnam and Mongolia), a win over Oxford and a loss to Cambridge in late winter. The King Penguins toured Rwanda in June, playing the national team at the national stadium in Kigali. The Rwandan Silverbacks running out winners 22-19 with a last minute try. Also included in this trip were grass roots coaching and charity work plus a trip to see the Gorillas. The Penguin Coaching Academy has also been busy with trips to Hong Kong, Gibraltar, Indonesia 56

and Malaysia. The focus for the academy has been a mixture of coach education and grass roots rugby development. All Penguins are looking forward to the SCC 7s week, catching up with friends, meeting the other teams, and taking in the hospitality that Singapore offer – it will be a great week and we are looking forward to it. A number of Penguin members are in town for the week so there will be lots going on! Thanks to all at the Singapore Cricket Club for the invite and hard work behind the scenes. Here’s to another great week of rugby.

IMPALA SARACENS Kenya Past & Present

Impala Rugby is one of the oldest Rugby Clubs in East Africa. Its roots date to the early 1930s when “Old Boys” of the former Prince of Wales School, today known as Nairobi School, formed the team. The Club was then known as “Old Cambrians”. The Club acquired its own home ground in 1949 on Ngong Road, which is now one of the landmarks in the area. It was in 1956 that the Club first played as Impala Club (the name Impala derived from the “Old Cambrians” emblem which was an Impala) and started to establish itself as a major rugby club in the region. The Club grew in stature and its best years were undoubtedly the early and mid-70s when Impala was virtually unbeatable winning consecutive League and League Cup titles besides several 7-a-side tournaments. Impala Rugby has over these intermediate years, re-invented itself and is now arguably one of the most exciting teams represented at the top level of Kenya Rugby. Recently, Impala Rugby concluded the broad framework of a partnership with Saracens (a top four professional rugby club in Europe, currently leading the English Premiership for the next three seasons. Under the terms of the partnership, Impala Rugby joined the Saracens Global Club Network which comprises of eight clubs in UK, USA, Brazil, Malaysia, China, Abu

Dhabi, Tonga and now Kenya. Impala Rugby was then re-branded to Impala Saracens – Nairobi.

Recent Performances

The Club has been a participant in the SCC 7s for the last 14 years, courtesy of our kind sponsors Standard Chartered Bank Singapore. In the year 2000, the team won the Bowl category of the tournament and in 2003 went on to win the Plate Category – a feat never before achieved by any Kenyan Club. The Club has just participated in the National Sevens Circuit in Kenya where in the final tournament where it finished as 1st runners-up. Expected in the team this year includes: Lean Adongo, Lameck Dunde, Ian Minjire, Samson Onsomu, Sammy Oliech (all part of the wider Kenya 7s Squad), Antony Nyandigisi, Pius Shiundu, Robert Aringo, Davies Makori, Nato Simiyu, Warren Nyanjom, Billy Omondi (the last two represented Kenya U19 in the Youth Olympics in China).

BORNEO EAGLES Malaysia The Borneo Eagles are a touring rugby team from Eagles Rugby Club, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. Despite its relatively short history of formation, the Borneo Eagles have nevertheless proven themselves to be formidable foes at most of the tournaments that they had entered. They have stamped their mark on the rugby pitch wherever they have been, whether at local events in Malaysia or overseas. The most memorable achievement of the team was achieving a hat-trick with their successful defence of their Cup title in Darwin in 2012 (Heineken Hottest Sevens in the World) – the first by any team in the history of the tournament. Among the other major achievements of the Borneo Eagles are: • Alor Star City International 7s (Cup Champs 2005) • Singapore Cricket Club 7s (Plate Champs 2005, Plate Champs 2009, Cup semi-finalists 2010, Cup runners-up 2011) • World Club Rugby 10s, Singapore (Champs 2014 – Asia Men’s Open) • Manila SEA Games International 7s (Gold medallists 2005) • Malaysia Rugby Union’s National Inter-Club Championships (Champs 2006) • Negeri Sembilan Royal 7s (Cup Champs 2006 & 2010) • HSBC-COBRA 10s (Plate Champs 2006, Cup semi-finalist 2007, Cup Champs 2009, Cup semi-finalist 2011, Cup semi-finalists 2012, Cup Champs 2013) • Jonah Jones 7s (Cup Champs 2008, 2012 & 2013) • Malaysia National Super League Cup (Champs 2009 & 2013, R/up 2014) • Borneo 7s International (Plate Champs 2009, Cup Champs 2004 & 2007, Cup r/up 2012, Cup r/up 2013)

• GFI Hong Kong FC 10s (Plate r/up 2008, Plate semi-finalists 2009, Cup quarterfinalists 2010, Cup semi-finalists 2011, Plate champions 2012, Plate champions 2014) • Hottest 7s in the World, Darwin, Australia (Cup Champs 2010, 2011 and 2012; R/up 2013, semifinalist 2014) Over the years, the team had comprised of some of the state’s top players, including past or current Malaysian national players. Several of them had in fact previously donned the national team’s captain’s jersey to lead the Malaysia Team at international tournaments. More recently, the Malaysian players in the team have, on many occasions, been reinforced by experienced guest players from Fiji, Samoa, Australia and New Zealand. A few of these guest players are based in Sandakan to help full-time in the many rugby development programmes organized by Eagles Rugby Club and Sabah Rugby Union.

NS WANDERERS RUGBY CLUB Malaysia NS Wanderers RC was formed in 1984 and currently competes in the MRU Super League – the top level of the Malaysian rugby union league system. Currently NS Wanderers RC boosts a good number of players in different categories including under 19s. NS Wanderers RC vision is to develop more young players to rugby at a higher level.

SINGAPORE BARBARIANS Singapore The Singapore Barbarians were formed in 2004 and was created to allow players from the Singapore Premiership Clubs to come together and represent Singapore in tournaments and games around Asia. Since 2004 we have taken part in Manila 10s, Bangkok 10s, Cobra 10s, Borneo 10s, SCC 7s, Angkor Watt 10s, and played XV a side games against New Zealand Universities, Randwick and Hong Kong National Team to name but a few. We are excited to be involved in the 67th SCC 7s and hope to continue the Barbarian style of rugby we play. A special thank you must go to our headline sponsor this year, Thurlestone Shipping (www. thurlestone-shipping.com.sg). Good luck to all teams, and we will see you in the bar for a beer on Sunday evening.

P.S.: None of the people in this photo will be playing at the SCC 7s; though there are some recognisable faces there…

SINGAPORE SELECT Singapore Coach: Ismail Kadir Management Team: Clarence Lam Team Physio: Declan Haplin

The Singapore Select is no stranger to 7s and are using this tournament as part of their ‘Go for Gold 2015’ Programme in which their target is to be first in the upcoming SEA Games on home soil. Captained by veteran Daniel Marc Chow with a mix of up-andcoming athletes, this team will be one to look out for. You may see a few familiar faces who have worn the black and gold of the Singapore Cricket Club as well.

STADE FRANCAIS France With 13 French Championship titles, fashion-making playing strips and their “arty” calendars, le Stade Français Paris is perhaps the most original and certainly one of the best known and most loved clubs in the world. Stade Français may have 131 years of history but the club’s 7s policy is embryonic. Thomas Savare, the club’s owner has asked his Deputy Chairman (and former Stade player) Richard Pool-Jones to develop an invitational 7s team to take the colourful Paris club to new territories around the world. In their inaugural tournament in August Les Panthères Roses managed a respectable 11th with a 62

side based around the club’s young academy players in the World Clubs Championship in August. Paris has chosen the 2014 SCC7s for its second sortie, the ville luminère has a strong latin influence with some of the best Spanish internationals. The team is coached by the up and coming Nick Wakley and his aventure parisienne will reunite Wakley with one of world’s inform players, Matty Turner after their recent success in Nairobi. Paris is an unknown quantity but expect panache and champagne from the side defending the city of love, romance, art and fashion.
