The Singapore Cricket Club’s International Soccer Sixes Tournament descends upon us once again and it is with great pleasure that I warmly welcome all participating teams, officials and supporters. Each year we see teams ready to bring on an outstanding game at the Padang and this year is no different. The 9th edition held from 10 to 11 June will feature sporting talents from 31 teams around the Asia Pacific region with 16 and 15 teams respectively for the Open and Masters categories. Supporters and spectators alike can expect challenging and exciting game play from all teams involved.
The Youth Tournament supported by the SCC Football Section will continue to venture forth in its commendable aim of providing a fantastic opportunity for youth teams from around Southeast Asia to play the field, put their sporting skills on display and most of all enjoy the game alongside their fellow teammates. Football is a key sport which has the uncanny ability to unite people from all walks of life and promote social bonding and cohesion. This is why grassroots football is a key component of the Football Association of Singapore’s new strategic plan and long-term programmes. We are therefore happy that the Singapore Cricket Club is hosting the 9th Annual International Soccer 6s at the Padang on 10 and 11 June 2017. It is an excellent opportunity for people to enjoy
the beautiful game in a picturesque location. The Singapore Cricket Club is once again organising this competition – which will see over 40 teams participating this year – demonstrates their continuing commitment to Singapore football, which includes fielding a team in the National Football League. I wish all teams participating in the Singapore Cricket Club Annual International Soccer 6s the very best of luck, and an enjoyable weekend of exciting action.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome all participating teams, officials and supporters to the 9th Singapore Cricket Club International Soccer Sixes Tournament to be held on the Padang from 10 to 11 June.
Youth Tournament. A chance for youngsters to show off their skills. Who knows, we may see the next Messi or Ronaldo in action.
This year promises to provide an exciting weekend of action on the pitch. We welcome teams from Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The tournament will see players competing in the Open, Masters and Youth categories; and supporters and spectators can be sure to expect great games of football.

I am proud to once again to chair the 9th SCC International Soccer 6’s and Youth (U14) Tournament 2017 on Saturday, 10th and Sunday, 11th June 2017 at The Padang.

As we head into June, the finales of national leagues around the world approach and a Champions League final beckons between the game’s European heavyweights. Closer to home however, certain young footballers from the backstreets of Bali, Cambodia, Timor-Leste and Thailand won’t be thinking about any of that. For them, only one thing has been on their minds the entire year: the SCC International Soccer 6’s & Youth Tournament! To be hosted once again at our beloved and historic Padang, this year’s tournament will be the competition’s 9th and for so many of those young players involved will be a tournament of firsts: a first time away from home; a first trip by plane; a first meeting of new friends from overseas; and a first time enjoying the warmth, hospitality and camaraderie of our Singapore Cricket Club.

Aleksandar Đurić is a former Bosnian-born Singapore international footballer of Serbian descent. He is currently a Principal for Sport Singapore and ActiveSG Football Academy and is playing in the Singapore Cosmopolitan Football League, a top amateur football league in Singapore for SCC First. He was noted for being a prolific striker with strong physical presence. His professional approach to his fitness and a disciplined lifestyle contributed to extending a career spanning over three decades. Đurić was junior kayaking champion of Yugoslavia when he was 15 and was ranked 8th in the world at 17. He represented Bosnia and Herzegovina in the C-1 500m canoeing event the 1992 Summer Olympics. After the Olympics, he returned to Hungary to resume his football career. In 1999, he signed for Tanjong Pagar United in the S.League where he was converted to a striker for the first time in his career. He won trophies with subsequent clubs Home United, Geylang United, Singapore Armed Forces and Tampines Rovers. He won eight league titles and three Singapore Cups in 16 seasons, amassing three Player of the Year and four top scorer awards on the way to becoming the league’s all-time top scorer. At international level, he debuted for Singapore at the age of 37 years in 2007. He became the first foreign-born player to start a match as captain in May 2008. He was in the Singapore squad for the AFF Championship in 2008, 2010 and 2012, the latter of which Singapore won. He retired from international football in December 2012 with a record of 24 goals in 53 matches. In 2013, he assumed his new duties as full-time fitness coach at his club Tampines Rovers and he retired from his playing career at the age of 44 in November 2014. 6

Club Career In 1999, Đurić received offers from Hong Kong
and Singapore but chose to move to the latter where he began his S.League career with Tanjong Pagar United. In June 2000, Đurić moved permanently to Singapore with Home United, playing as a striker. He scored 11 goals in all competitions for his new club as he won the 2000 Singapore Cup in front of a 45,000 crowd at the National Stadium. In 2001, Đurić signed on with Geylang United. Geylang won their first S.League title in five years after defeating Jurong in the final matchday, with Đurić scoring 37 goals that season. In November 2004, Đurić signed for Singapore Armed Forces. The Warriors won the league four times, achieving the S.League and Singapore Cup double in 2007 and 2008 as he finished league top-scorer three times in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Đurić scored 129 goals in 150 league appearances with the club. His prolific form was recognised with the S.League Player of the Year award in 2007 and 2008. He scored his 200th domestic goal with a 5-minute hat-trick over Liaoning Guangyuan on 9 July 2007 and broke Mirko Grabovac’s league record of 244 goals in local competitions with two goals in a 2–2 draw with ex-club Geylang United on his 38th birthday. The club also defeated Home United 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in regulation time in the 2008 Charity Shield. He signed for Tampines Rovers in 2010 and became the first player to reach a milestone 300th goal on 27 September 2010 with two goals against Balestier Khalsa in the Singapore Cup. With 328 goals in 444 top division club appearances, Đuric was ranked by IFFHS as the world top scorer in July 2011. He picked up his third Player of the Year award in 2012 and finished joint league top-scorer with Moon Soon-Ho in 2013.

Article by: Owen Monaghan Chairman, 2016 Soccer Sixes Organising Committee Another SCC club tournament concluded just as quickly as it arrived. This time it was the 8th SCC International Soccer Sixes held at the glorious Padang over the weekend of 4 and 5 June. I want to start with my heartfelt thanks to the SCC Club staff who added value in the tournament in so many ways, making the tournament a smooth success. Thank you to our sponsors, especially Raymond Weil, CLA and Tiger Beer for their support. A big thank you to the committed and supportive General Committee led by the GCB Chairman Sher Baljit Singh and David Jones who were both there every step of the way throughout the weekend. And a final thank you to the Soccer Section committee and members, who gave their support and guidance in so many ways. The tournament kicked off on Saturday morning with the most important aspect of why we do what we do for this tournament, and that is the youth teams from the region. A total of five clubs participated in the youth tournament during the weekend, namely: • Bali Sport Foundation, Indonesia • Muhammadiyah Welfare Home, Singapore • Phnom Penh Crown Club, Cambodia • Sports Org, Timor Leste • Youth Football Home, Thailand 8

Timor Leste were debutants to the tournament and they brought so much joy to me personally with their participation under very challenging circumstances physically – their attitudes to keep going was tremendous. The rest of the teams have been participating since the beginning. It is heart-warming to see their level of football improving year after year and the matches they play, intensely competitive. The final saw Cambodia take on Bali with Cambodia emerging as winners of this year’s Youth Cup. Thank you to all the families who hosted the youths throughout the weekend welcoming them to their homes. The Open tournament saw 16 teams vying for the title with S-League’s Home Utd and SCC Firsts producing great Day 1 displays and results. It was great to have clubs such as the Hong Kong FC and Yokohama CAC participating once again adding diversity to the tournament. Newbies Tokyo Panthers performed well, both with their performance on field and kit displays and emerged Open Plate champions. Vikings Singapore overpowered all teams in the Open Cup Tournament to emerge champions. Other notable teams include the Gaelic Lions and the SCC NFL with their exuberant determination to perform. The Open Plate final saw Raymond Weil coming short against a very good Tokyo Panthers team who stole the show to win the silverware in their debut appearance.

The Open Cup final saw the SCC Firsts take on Vikings Singapore and what a final it was! SCC was up to a comfortable 2-nil when two stunning goals swept in from the Vikings in the second half, bringing the match into the ‘golden goal’ extra time. Vikings Singapore emerged victorious with an unstoppable header for the Cup! The Masters Plate final was played between Avenue FC and Royal Selangor Club with Avenue FC edging their opponent and winning the Plate trophy. The Masters Cup tournament was a very exciting ‘who’s who’ spectacle with many ex-Singapore stars playing for many different teams. The Akashi All Stars shined with player representations from Abbas Saad, Lionel Lewis and Aide Iskandar, to name a few. The Masters Cup final was played between Hong Kong FC and the SCC Convenors with both having good semi-final

wins and of course a local club derby of sorts. The Hong Kong FC was too strong on the day though and emerged 3-1 winners to the dismay of the home crowd. The Legends tournament saw four teams, Citibank, Sima Engineering, CLA and Singapore Ex Internationals play in a mini round-robin for the trophy. The final was played between CLA and the Singapore Ex Internationals with the ex-stars coming out on top in an exciting final. My congratulations to all teams for participating and making the 2016 Soccer Sixes one to remember. A special mention to Hong Kong FC who came with three teams and brought great atmosphere to the tournament and both the Royal Selangor Club and Yokohama CAC for their efforts in traveling down to play in the tournament. YOUTH T O U R N AM EN T The SCC Soccer Sixes Youth Tournament was inspired by the late Henrik Lorenz, an old and dear friend of SCC who founded the Youth Football Home in Phuket – the first team to take part. The Club is delighted to continue his legacy by hosting six teams in this year’s tournament.
Most of these children come from underprivileged backgrounds and many have never travelled beyond their own villages, let alone abroad. For them, this will indeed be an experience of a lifetime.

PHNOM PENH CROWN CLUB | Cambodia The Academy of Cambodia’s most successful club, Phnom Penh Crown Club, was established in February 2011 after nationwide trials in 17 provinces uncovered the best 22 young players, aged 13 and under, who became the first intake at the club’s full-time residential Academy – the first of its kind in the country. The senior team had won the Cambodian League title on four occasions and were runners-up in the AFC Presidents Cup in 2011. The Academy team has taken over their mantle at junior level in Cambodia, winning almost every domestic competition they have entered since their formation. In their first year, they returned from a six-match visit to the SCC Soccer Sixes Youth Tournament in June with a creditable third place. Crown also hosted and won the inaugural First State Gold Investment Cup which was televised live on national TV. July 2012 saw the Academy return to take part in the SCC Soccer Sixes, losing out in the final on penalty kicks. In May 2013, the youngest Academy players appeared in the Singapore Sixes tournament for the third time and with seven wins in as many games, scoring 25 goals and conceding none, they returned home with the Cup. The team also featured in the very first FAM-Frenz U-15 Asean Champions Trophy which involved teams from all 11 Asean countries. A fabulous opportunity for the youngsters to test themselves against the best of the region’s young hopefuls and despite finishing in sixth place in their group, the Academy gained invaluable experience from their participation.
In July 2013, the Academy expanded to 32 players with the arrival of 10 new faces, all aged 12/13 years old. Every one of the Academy players has represented the Cambodian national team at different age levels and 2013 saw them triumph as Cambodia Youth League champions, winning both U-15 and U-17 age categories. They returned to SCC in 2014 to defend their SCC Soccer Sixes trophy as well as to take part in the revamped Asia U-16 Champions Trophy. The Academy’s performance in the latter was a considerable improvement on the previous year, with the team finishing in third place in Group B. Their performance in the 2015 Asia U-18 Champions Trophy saw them finish in fourth spot in Group B. The Academy returns to SCC this year with the aim to repeat the victory of 2014. www.ppcfc.com

Y OU T H T OU RNAMENT BALI SPORTS FOUNDATION | Indonesia The Bali Sports Foundation (BFS) was formed to improve the lives of children with disabilities in Bali and East Indonesia by using the power of sport and play for development, health and peace. Winner of two editions of the SCC Soccer 6s Youth Tournament, Bali Sports Foundation (BSF), a registered Indonesian charity, shows that through sport, those living with a disability can demonstrate their strengths and not be categorised and stigmatised because of it. In this regard sport can be seen as a stepping stone for those living with disabilities (and their families) to move from isolation in a karmic society like Bali, into the mainstream and also educate those who do not have a disability to understand that those that do, have rights that include being able to fully participate in society and not face discrimination. YOUTH FOOTBALL HOME | Thailand Youth Football Home (Phuket) Foundation is a registered charity in Thailand. Our aim is to establish a loving home for orphaned and destitute boys and girls. The boys and girls receive comprehensive education at good local schools. They also enjoy daily coaching and training from fully qualified coaches in the game of football.

The Youth Football Home is built on 8 rai of land in the town of Thalang (about 150 metres from Wat Muang Komaraphat) on Phuket Island consisting of a dormitory home for 32 boys, a residential building for staff and a full-sized football field plus training areas. Construction began in October 2005. The dormitory and staff house were built and furnished by the beginning of May, 2006. The football field and the training areas were formed four months later. The first group of nine boys from Bangkok and the northern provinces arrived at our Home on the 11 May 2006, and were enrolled at the Thalangwittaya School in time to attend the first day of the new school year. Today, we have an almost full house with many of the boys selected from football camps held on our grounds. Youth Football Home has a full complement of qualified staff to look after the children. Under the supervision of a Thai Lady Guardian as Wardress, the staff includes two nannies, a cook and cleaning, security and grounds personnel. We have
