MESSAGES

A. MICHAEL GRICE SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB

PRESIDENT

IMRAN H. KHWAJA

I am delighted to pen these few words to heartily welcome all players and officials of participating Clubs to the Singapore Cricket Club’s 4th International Twenty20 Tournament as it is an event that is close to my heart. The phenomenon that is T20 has fully captured the imagination and support of the cricketing world in recent years – both players and fans alike – as well as the commercial world through considerable sponsorship and hospitality opportunities. To get on board this “new train” the SCC introduced its own International T20 Tournament in 2009 for its reciprocal Clubs and the event has since grown to become possibly the leading Club Tournament in Asia. For the cricket purist, the T20 Tournament is sometimes frowned upon, but it was never meant to be anything other than an entertaining and fun experience for everyone involved in the game we all love so much. And that is what we anticipate our T20 players to provide for us over the weekend – fun, entertainment, the chance to make new friendships and camaraderie – with lots of action and tremendous skill from participants as far away as South Africa, Australia, India, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong as they vie to become champions. Set against the backdrop of the amazing Singapore skyline and played on the beautiful ground that is the Padang, we are in for a weekend of dynamic cricket. Come on down and join the fun – like the teams that are taking part, you will be very welcome.

The Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) T20 has now grown to be an iconic tournament in the local scene. It lures international teams of quality and has become the Premier T20 Tournament of the region. Judging from SCC’s previous T20 Tournaments, the cricket is going to be fast, furious and entertaining. The location of the SCC, sandwiched between the Marina Bay Sands and the Gothic Buildings of the Museum, is going to provide a unique backdrop which all players and spectators are going to remember as a cherished spectacle of cricket in Singapore. I congratulate the SCC in hosting the Tournament which not only gives players keen and friendly competition, but which goes a long way towards enhancing the profile of cricket in Singapore. I wish all players success, if not enjoyment, and spectators high adrenalin fun in the sun.

Sports connect people from different cultures like no other social activity as it encourages a rare mix of vicarious experience and active participation. The intense memories generated in watching or playing a sport together, of shared moments in creating the highs and letting slip the lows are unlike most other popular ‘social’ pursuits such as music or cinema. Cricket of all sports (and here I openly admit to a bias!) is unique in being able to bluntly, publicly, and often unforgivingly, measure individual contributions whilst still representing the essence of a true team sport where personal excellence is made memorable only by the sum the parts. And club cricket, above all, is even more special as it affords additional benefits and often rare experiences – whether it be the chance to travel to new countries; meet with, and compete against, those who use the same game to express themselves differently; recognize, appreciate, and on the odd occasion, contribute to, the history of the game in places we would have never have dreamt of when becoming the proud owner of that first bat; and, last but not least, to sample food and drink (not always in that order and invariably not in the same volumes) that range from the excitement of the exotic to the comfort of the normal. Welcome to the 4th SCC International Twenty20 Tournament. I hope you enjoy our event, both on and off the pitch, and take back memories that further strengthen the special bonds shared between our Clubs. Chairing the Tournament Committee has been a humbling experience for me personally, as I have witnessed first-hand the tireless commitment of all the Member volunteers who have significant day jobs but who have selflessly contributed to further grow an idea that was born in 2009 – and for that I wish to express my deepest appreciation. To take the field with all of you has been very special.

DAVID JONES SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB

CRICKET SECTION CONVENOR

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome the various teams from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Sri Lanka and South Africa to participate in the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) International Twenty20 Tournament. This is one of SCC’s six annual international sporting fixtures and it presents one of the highest profile cricket tournaments in Asia, featuring top international stars representing some of the most famous clubs in the world, to compete over three days of first class competition. Set in the heart of Singapore’s city centre, SCC’s home ground, the Padang, plays host to the event, with the truly spectacular skyline of the Singapore Central Business District presenting itself from the field of play. It is a truly historic venue as this is where, almost 50 years ago, Singapore’s founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, declared Singapore’s independence on 09 August 1965. Therefore, this highly prestigious cricket tournament will certainly be a nostalgic event for both players and spectators alike. Cricket is the world’s second largest sport in terms of overall global viewership, second only to soccer. Since its inception as a professional format for cricket in 2003, Twenty20 cricket has shown how a sport with strong tradition can adapt and reinvent itself to fit modern consumer habits and tastes. The shorter and therefore more energetic and exciting version of the traditional game helps increase the appeal of the sport to schoolchildren and young working adults, given the constraints of time in this electronic information age. Consequently, it has been responsible for the staggering growth in cricket audiences around the world. By doing so, Twenty20 cricket has really set the benchmark for other sports to emanate the success it has had in growing participation and viewership bases across the world. I would like to sincerely thank the sponsors, the Organising Committee, chaired by Unmish Parthasarathi, the volunteers and the SCC Management staff, in general, and the Sports and Marketing & Communications departments, in particular, under the leadership of its General Manager, Nigel Stearns, who have worked very hard towards making this tournament a success. I wish all the teams a safe and enjoyable stay in Singapore. Please do have an exciting and fun-filled weekend at the SCC and may the best team win!

I am delighted to welcome our participating teams, esteemed guests, sponsors, Club Members and the general public to our 4th SCC International Twenty20 Tournament. Since its inception in 2009, this event has continued to evolve into what I believe is the best tournament of its kind in Asia. What makes it unique is the coming together of clubs with long cricketing traditions from around the globe. Indeed, the eight participating teams bring together well over 1,000 years of history. The cricket is always of the highest quality and the camaraderie amongst the players is very special. I am particularly looking forward to rekindling the many friendships that have developed over the years. It is these friendships that will live in the memory long after the actual exploits on the field may have been forgotten. I would also like to welcome and thank our many sponsors and partners, without whom our tournament would not happen. A thank you needs to go to Club Management (the Sports Department in particular), for their hard work in helping to make the tournament a success and of course to our President, Michael Grice and his General Committee for their continued guidance and support. This tournament is one of the six major sporting events at SCC that take place every year and the support of the other sports sections and their convenors is always greatly appreciated. We always owe a huge amount of gratitude to the organising committee who have worked tirelessly to ensure that we put on a world class event at the Padang. Sometimes we don’t appreciate just how many hours these individuals put in on a voluntary basis, for the love of the club and the game. It is not possible to name everyone, but I would like to say a special thank you to our Tournament Chairman, Unmish Parathasarathi, Chris Rogers, Suresh Shankar, Adam Martin, Tracy Jones, Martin & Sarah Seabright, Ashok Mahtani, Sanchit Sanga, Rupert Jakes, Will Tipping and Richard Stapley-Oh. Thank you also to those who supported the sponsorship efforts without which the tournament would not be possible – Chris Thomson, Sandeep Uberoi, Ash Raivadera, Suresh Kalpathy and Phil Simmonds. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Singapore Cricket Club. Please enjoy our hospitality and a wonderful three days of cricket.

The

Singapore

Cricket Club History

Established in 1852, the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) is one of the oldest and well known clubs in the region. Cricket was played on the Padang as early as 1837, only 18 years after Sir Stamford Raffles founded the settlement of Singapore in 1819, but it was not until 1852 that the first meetings were called to discuss the formal establishment of a cricket club. There have been no fewer than three clubhouse buildings on the Padang, the first erected some time in the 1860s, the second in 1877. The third pavilion, which forms the core of the present clubhouse building, was built in 1884. It was extended in 1907, and the northern and southern wings that we see today were added in 1922. Between 1959 and the early 1970s, numerous cricket teams of Test or first class standard visited Singapore and graced the Padang. The most notable of these were: • The Australian Test team to India and Pakistan in 1959 • The MCC team to New Zealand in 1961 • Ron Roberts’ Commonwealth XI in 1962 • E.W. Swanton’s Commonwealth XI in 1964 • Joe Lister’s International XI in 1968 • The MCC XI on its East African and East Asian tour in 1970

between 1993-1995. These tournaments mixed club players with some the game’s all-time greats, including Dennis Lillee, Joel Garner, Gordon Greenidge, Clive Rice and Alvin Kallicharran. The Sri Lankan team included a young Sanath Jayasuirya, who gave us a glimpse of what was to come. He obviously took a liking to the Padang and in 1996 on the same ground, scored the then fastest ever ODI hundred, in 48 balls against Pakistan. Cricket has continued to grow in popularity in Singapore and today, SCC fields seven league and one social team, with approximately 150 active cricketers in the club. Touring is also at the heart of the Club, with section and team tours becoming regular fixtures on the cricketing calendar. Interports to our reciprocal clubs around the region such as the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Penang Sports Club, Royal Selangor Club, Hong Kong Cricket Club and Kowloon Cricket Club, are still integral to our season. The club also highly valued relationships with key clubs in UK, Australia, India, Sri Lanka and beyond. In 2013 alone, SCC had very successful tours to both Melbourne and England, to coincide with the Ashes. The section works hard to nurture these important relationships and we see the SCC International Twenty20 Tournament as a key instrument to further develop these friendships.

• The Indian and Pakistan Test teams returning from their

tours of Australia in 1968 and 1972 In more recent times, before Twenty20 had even been thought of, SCC hosted a series of cricket 6-a-side tournaments

Tour Talk 2013 saw SCC Twenty20 taking a break, but the Cricket Section was active in many other ways. This included two major tours during a momentous Ashes year to both MCC Clubs. In January SCC were treated to a hugely memorable trip to Melbourne. Not only were we privileged to play on the aweinspiring MCG, Melbourne CC hosted us impeccably and threw in the extra surprise of a fully videoed game; leaving many treasured memories for the whole touring party. In July, over 40 members, partners and families headed to the UK to embark on a 12 day tour of England, taking in some unforgettable Test Match action along with a superb series of games including a game against Marylebone CC at Finchley and one against The Royal Household CC at Windsor. Blessed by the amazing weather and the long light evenings, our tourists enjoyed some notable successes including a hat-trick from Junior Sports Member Karthik Suresh against MCC. But these tours are so much more than the cricket. In many cases the tourists departing Singapore did not know

each other or had not played together, meaning the tour is a perfect place to build stronger bonds. Most importantly though it’s about building on friendships with existing relationships and developing new ones at our Reciprocal and connected Clubs that is most important. The welcome that MCC in Australia and MCC in UK have always shown to us is to their great credit and it is that sort of welcome we want all the teams at SCC Twenty20 to enjoy over the next three days!

TEAM PROFILE Cricket Club of India (CCI) The Cricket Club of India is incorporated on 8 November, 1933, with an object to promote cricket and other sports in India. Its contribution to sports and cricket in particular, has given it a unique position in the history of not only India, but the entire world. The stadium, constructed on 90,000 square yards of reclaimed land, was officially inaugurated on 7 December 1937 and named Brabourne Stadium, after the then Governor of Bombay Lord Brabourne. Lord Tennyson described the clubhouse and pavilion as “most magnificent, there is nothing else like it anywhere.” Keith Miller described this ground as a “Cricket Paradise.” Premier Domestic tournament known as Ranji Trophy was first played in the year 1938 and in 1948 it became a venue for international game by hosting the first test match between India and West Indies. Test cricket continued to be held on these grounds till the year 1973, when international cricket moved to the newly constructed Wankhede Stadium. Tennis, badminton, squash, billiards, snooker and swimming are the integral part of various sports being played here. It has hosted numerous prestigious international events, including the ATP Tournaments. Apart from sports, Brabourne Stadium hosted grand cultural events and musical concerts, including

performances by John McLaughlin, Placido Domingo and The Rolling Stones. Brabourne Stadium was considered as the major venue for hosting five matches of ICC Champions Trophy in 2005 and became the host venue for the first T20 international on Indian soil when India beat Australia in a one-off game in October 2007, while Test Cricket made a welcome return to its original home in December 2009. In IPL 3, the Mumbai Indians decided to make CCI as their home ground with all seven home games played at this ground to packed houses. In November 2012, we had a privilege to host India A versus visiting an England team followed by the Women’s World Cup in February 2013. In May 2014, we even hosted IPL 7 Eliminator match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians which was a big success. We are now hosting PSA International Squash Championship. Today, CCI continues to be the leader of sports in India and is recognized as one of the most prestigious club in the country with reciprocal arrangement with many leading sports clubs all over the world.

Hong Kong Cricket Club (HKCC) At a public meeting held in Hong Kong in June 1851, a proposal that a club be formed on the military parade ground south of the waterfront – the area to be turfed – launched one of the first cricket clubs outside England. The club was to be known as The Hong Kong Cricket Club and one of its objects was “to promote the game of cricket, tennis, croquet and other athletic sports and pastimes.” The Chater Road ground (now known as Chater Gardens) served the HKCC for 124 years. The first pavilion was a matshed in the northeast corner of the ground. This was soon replaced on the same site by a more solid building. Then, diagonally opposite, an extensive structure appeared (near the old Bank of China). Finally, in 1923, the last clubhouse was erected, opposite the Hong Kong Club in Chater Road. The ground became a focal point of the City of Victoria and although a private club and used primarily for cricket, it was thrown open for the public to access and for the staging of important events. Apart from the dark ages of the Japanese Occupation, the Club thrived, adding Lawn Bowls to its main sports in 1936 and Squash in the 50s. In 1975, the Club gave up its world-famous site in the middle of bustling Central District and moved to the greener Wongnaichung Gap. The new design allowed for a more family-conducive atmosphere. To the Chater Road facilities of cricket ground, lawn bowls green and tennis courts, a 25-metre swimming pool, four squash courts, more tennis courts and,

10 / SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

subsequently, a Sports Annexe which provides various activity facilities, was added. Food & Beverage operations have been expanded to include the Long Room for fine dining, spinners Coffee Shop, The Willow Room Chinese Restaurant, Poolside Café, Chater Tavern (Adult Bar), Sportsman’s Bar and Sports Annexe Bar. Dot Cod, our Central Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar, opened in 2000. The Restaurant is situated very close to the original ground at Chater Road and is open to the public. In November 2009, an additional floor was completed to the Sports Annexe, housing the Cricket Centre for Excellence and an Indoor Sports Hall. The rooftop tennis court area has been reinstated. The list of “other sports and athletic pastimes” has received numerous additions, notably, Netball, Rugby, Hockey and Table Tennis. With a present-day membership of over 2400 and providing a comprehensive range of sports and activities in a green and pleasant environment, one of the oldest sports clubs in Hong Kong has moved confidently into the 21st century.

TEAM PROFILE Madras Cricket Club (MCC) Sports, A Way of Life “Cricket was his religion and the Madras Cricket Club was his Church” – this was what that was said when illustrious and eminent Sir Alexander Arbuthnot founded this institution in 1846. For nearly a century, the club remained an exclusive preserve of the Europeans. The MCC played a perfect role in promoting and developing not only cricket but also hockey, tennis and squash. From the earliest days, the MCC maintained the Chepauk cricket ground and organised all representative cricket, playing host to national and international teams. The MCC has also conducted prestigious all-India tournaments in hockey, tennis and squash. At the club level, hockey and cricket matches attracted maximum participation and were played with great enthusiasm and fairness. In fact, many members had achieved a great degree of proficiency in more than one game. Over the years, the MCC has produced champion sportsmen across various disciplines and brought great laurels to the club and the country. Changing with the times and adapting itself to modernity without compromising its culture and value systems,

the MCC today is a beehive of sports activity and continues to produce sportspersons who have excelled both at the national and international arena. The club organises inter-club tournaments in Chennai. These tournaments attract the best of talents and games are fought with great intensity. The club also invites and organises home and away international friendlies with the Royal Selangor Club, the Singapore Cricket Club and the Irish Cricket Club, to name a few. To many of its members, the MCC is a second home, a place to unwind after a stressful days’ work, a place to get a good game, have a good workout at the gym or a nice, cool swim; but above all, let one’s hair down with their preferred choice of beverage in a very cordial and friendly ambience.

SPONSORS:

Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) The Melbourne Cricket Club celebrated its 175th anniversary last year, having been founded on 15 November 1838 when five men – Frederick Powlett, Robert Russell, George B. Smyth and brothers Andrew and Charles Mundy – agreed to form a cricket club to be known as the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC). As a pioneer club, the MCC’s early role was administrative and promotional, as well as competitive. The MCC was most prominent in developing the colony’s cricket and played a major role in guiding the game’s destiny until the then Victorian Cricket Association (now Cricket Victoria) took over the reins in 1906. The club sponsored four Australian teams to England and eight visits to Australia between 1886 and 1905. The MCC has been synonymous with success, measured in numerous premierships, club championships and state and national representatives. The last of our competition leading 20 1st XI premiership wins was in 2012/13, a season that was arguably one of our most successful ever. It yielded a ‘treble’ for both the 1st and 3rd XIs by capturing the one-day and Twenty20 titles along with the season premierships, plus the 2nd XI oneday title and, to cap it off, a record 20th club championship. In its long and prestigious history, the MCC has been home to many fine players who wore the baggy green cap; Fred ‘Demon’ Spofforth, Jack Blackham, Warwick Armstrong, Bert Ironmonger, Hugh Trumble, Vernon Ransford, Bill Ponsford, Keith Rigg, Colin McDonald, Lindsay Kline, Paul Sheahan, Max Walker, Dean Jones and, more recently, Brad Hodge and

12 / SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

Andrew McDonald. In all, there have been 41 players who have played Test cricket during their time at Melbourne. The MCC Foundation’s charter includes a commitment to fostering the development of cricket both within Australia and internationally, particularly in neighbouring regions. Recent tours to the UK (Marylebone CC), Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vanuatu, Japan and Fiji support that ideal. The MCC also values its relationship with our reciprocal clubs and looks forward to touring and hosting matches against the likes of Hong Kong CC, Cricket Club of India, Marylebone CC, Royal Selangor Club and Singapore CC. The MCC always has been the foremost promoter of sport in Australia. In 1859 the MCC drew up the first set of rules for Victorian (later Australian) football. It hosted the first tour by an English cricket team in 1862, the first Test match in 1877 and the first one-day international match in 1971. Along with the playing of cricket, today’s MCC is an umbrella organisation for several thousand participants in 12 sporting sections – baseball, bowls, croquet, football (Melbourne FC), golf, hockey, lacrosse, netball, real tennis, squash, target shooting and tennis. The MCC also has the public role of managing and developing of one of the country’s greatest assets – the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the club’s location since 1853.

SCA was constituted as a society on 4 November 1965. SCA’s vision is to develop the game by making cricket a recognised and enjoyable sport for all levels and ages of players in Singapore by embedding cricket into the cultures and passion of the people of Singapore. SCA’s key values are embedded within its mission statement: “Singapore Cricket Association is the guardian of a contemporary game in Singapore. SCA is an accessible, financially viable, vibrant, performance driven organisation. Self-sufficiency is valued within SCA, member associations, clubs, players and other stakeholders of cricket. We aim to be the top echelon of cricket associations in this region in all aspects of our organisation.” On the international scene, Singapore is currently ranked 26th in the ICC global ranking. Singapore earned promotion to Division 3 of the World Cricket League after finishing second in the Division 4 tournament which was held in June 2014. Singapore is now preparing for the World Cricket League Division 3 to be played in Uganda at the end of 2014.

14 / SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

On the domestic scene, with over 100 teams in the domestic league spread over six divisions and an institutions and corporate league, 19 cricket grounds, an average of 35 fixtures a week, 80-100 registered umpires and scorers, and a corporation of emerging male and female cricketers, Singapore Cricket is riding an upswing of interest in the game. Domestic cricket has never been busier with many new teams joining the Association in the past three years. Singapore holds the highest number of officially-sanctioned cricket matches of any non-Test playing country in the world. To put this growth into perspective, there were just 14 teams in the Singapore league in 2003. SCA also runs the Women’s League, a Junior League for boys, national school’s championships in three divisions and other ad hoc tournaments for the schools. Apart from the above, SCA as a governing body organises various cricket education programs in conjunction with the Asian Cricket council for Coaches, Umpires, Scorers and Curators. SCA also caters to the cricket community by organising weekend clinics and holiday camps for the cricket enthusiastic kids in Singapore.

TEAM PROFILE Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) The Singhalese Sports Club is now 115 years old and was formed way back in 1899. The club is based at Maitland Place Colombo 7 an exclusive suburb in Colombo where the headquarters of Sri Lanka Cricket are also located. SSC has won the premier championship many times, more than any other club in Sri Lanka. This season just concluded, it won the Premier Limited Over after being runners-up for three consecutive years. Losing six senior players to national commitments SSC could not win the League. SSC became triple champions in 2009, the first time in the history of Sri Lanka cricket that a club had won all three tournaments during one calendar year. We also won four championships during the year ended 2013 which was also the first time in the history of Sri Lanka Cricket. In the recent series against England, the following SSC cricketers represented the country: Mahela Jayawardana, Dammika Prasad, Kaushal Silva, Sachitra Senanayake and Dimuth Karunaratna. The present SSC team will be captained by youthful Test opener Dimuth Karunarathna and his Deputy will be Dammika Prasad who is also a national player who had a dream figure of 5 for 48 against England enabling Sri Lanka to win the second test and also the series for the first time on English soil.

16 / SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

The SSC stalwart Michael de Zoysa who has come with the SSC squad to Singapore many times is the Current Cricket Manager of the National team. In his brief tenure, the team had won the Asian Cup and T20 in Bangaladesh and had very successful tour to England where they won the Test, ODI and T20 series. SSC Cricket section is headed by Samantha Dodanwela former Sri Lanka poolist and the present club coach is former SSC player Kapila Weerasinghe. Other than the national players, some promising schools boys who performed exceptionally well during the school season are also expected to participate in our T20 squad. SSC has a Cricket school with a professional coaching staff which trains boys from ages 9 years to 18 years during the week ends and two days of the week. It has side turf practice wickets with lights, indoor nets. The club has over 7000 members and, in addition to having a Test playing Cricket ground, has two swimming pools, tennis courts, badminton and squash courts and a well-equipped gymnasium. Although the club has other sports, cricket will always be the number one sport and focus of the club.

Mark Anderson Mark ‘Dos’ Anderson started out his Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) association as a Dowling Shield (U16) player some 37 years ago (he must have been selected at a very young age!). Actually, it started a year or two before that, operating the Albert Ground scoreboard on a Saturday afternoon watching his big brother, John, play! Over the next 22 seasons, ‘Dos’ notched up over 300 matches as a player, captaining the Second and Third XIs for 12 seasons. In amongst it, was a prized First XI match against Richmond in a one-dayer at the Albert Ground in 1991/92. The scorers were untroubled (dnb) and his 0/26 off six overs failed to attract an average, but the opportunity for ‘Dos’ to play at his club’s senior level was the pinnacle of an outstanding career with the Demons.

Over the years, he played in six premiership teams including three as captain of the Third XI. He was also proud to manage the Dowling Shield team to four successive titles. Outside of regular ‘club cricket’ Mark has travelled various parts of the world to play cricket for the MCC, and also for its social arm, the MCC XXIX Club. Obviously known to those at Singapore Cricket Club as a regular tourist, there have been multiple trips to Hong Kong CC, he has led a number of club tours including Malaysia and Singapore in 1996 and to the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ tournament played between Cricket Club of India, Marylebone CC and the Melbourne CC held Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai in 2001. MCC cricket development tours have taken him to Vanuatu and Japan, and the inaugural 1993 XXIX Club UK tour culminated in Mark representing the Melbourne Cricket Club at Lord’s. All that said, ‘Dos’ has been heard to say, “There are not many greater views on a cricket field anywhere in the world than standing on ‘The Padang’ at Singapore Cricket Club.” Off the field ‘Dos’ brought up 25 years of continuous service at the MCC last year. He started off as cricket secretary in 1988, combining playing with administering ‘all things cricket' at the club for nearly 10 years. Since that time, he has held key posts in managing the club’s membership and the Members’ Reserve on match days under various titles where today he still holds the position as Club Manager. In his ‘spare time’, Dos has been a member of the MCC XXIX Club since 1988 and a committeeman since 1996. He also served as president from 2009-12. All in all, Mark ‘Dos’ Anderson has been a magnificent club ambassador for the MCC, whether officially or unofficially, within Australia and abroad, both on and off the field.

The Florescent

Orange Cricket Balls Ever since the concept of a day/night Test match was seen as a possibility, the first point that was agreed was that it should be played in traditional ‘whites’ and therefore the colour of the ball became a major issue. The world’s two leading manufacturers began to look at the possible colours which would prove to be suitable during daylight/twilight/under lights. Interestingly, after much research, the two resulting colours were – pink and florescent orange. The ICC has then been in touch with all the cricket boards, requesting for feedback of their experiences in using these coloured balls. Kookaburra, an Australian manufacturer, decided to promote the pink balls whilst Dukes, a UK manufacturer, favours the orange but had also manufactured the pink which has been used in first class cricket in the West Indies for two years. Dukes consulted a leading professor at Southampton University dealing with marine safety and was encouraged to favour the florescent orange as it was the colour used to paint life boats which need to be identified in emergencies. Having established the best colour, they continued to improve the technology to 24 / SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

produce coloured leather suitable to make cricket balls. Today, Dukes has the ideal product and supplies to a large number of premier cricket leagues in the UK for their limited over and T20 competitions. With these great successes, Dukes was also the proud match ball partner for the SCC T20 Tournament in 2012. Dilip Jajodia, Managing Director of Dukes shared that the cricket leagues in the UK had suggested that all you have to do is take a florescent orange ball and any other coloured ball/s and throw them around, after which to gather feedback from spectators to identify which colour they can see most clearly. The result, he says confidently, was overwhelmingly in favour of the orange ball. Australia has announced that they are planning to play a Day/Night Test against New Zealand in 2015, but the decision on the ball colour is still in limbo!

SCC Cricket Youth

Development The development of junior players has always been a priority for SCC. The cricket youth development (CYD) programme starts from 13 years old, but we are looking to expand this to younger age groups. We have been fortunate to have very qualified individuals running the CYD programme. In recent years, we have had Rex Martens, who played cricket with distinction for Singapore for many years, and Peter Brooks, a Level 3 coach from UK. The current Head of CYD is Riaz Altaff Hussien, another experienced Singapore player, who himself came through the junior system at SCC. He is supported by national player Arun Vijayan, Division 1 player Arit Dutta, and the experienced Arooran Alagaratnam. Training sessions take place at least twice per week. Not only do they receive quality coaching and development, juniors who are enrolled in the CYD programme play for SCC in the Singapore Cricket Association (SCA) Under 16 tournament, the main junior competition in Singapore, which SCC have managed to win twice. If they perform well, they have the chance to represent the national Under 16 who play regularly in international competitions. Those who join the CYD programme also have the opportunity to join SCC as a junior sports member (JSM) at a very reasonable cost. This allows them to use the facilities of the club and represent SCC in adult league cricket. SCC fields teams in Divisions 1-5 and juniors are encouraged to play as soon as they are ready – some as young as 13 years old are already playing regularly. Playing with and against experienced cricketers only helps them develop and mature more quickly. JSMs are also encouraged to tour with SCC and their costs are substantially subsidised. In the past three years alone, tours have included South Africa, Australia and UK, as well as a number in the region.

26 / SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

Another highlight of the CYD programme are coaching clinics with some of the legends of the game, wherever the opportunity arises. As recently as June, 15 of our up and coming young cricketers were fortunate to have a coaching session followed by some Q&A with legend, Sachin Tendulkar. This opportunity came about through RBS, for whom Sachin is a brand ambassador. SCC also had the privilege of hosting Sachin in 2009. Also in 2012, the juniors were fortunate to have a clinic with Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan, followed by a lengthy Q&A session. We look forward to the current group of junior players representing SCC at the highest levels of the game and being stalwarts of the club in future.

Kwik cricket

hits the padang Kwik cricket is about to hit the Singapore’s shores again. The Padang will be the venue for Singapore’s young, enthusiastic cricketers to showcase their talent in the finals. The competition was featured in the 2012 Twenty20 for the first time ever, and had proved to be popular. Eight school teams, made up of six players, will compete over two days in this fast-paced version of the game aimed at 5 to 10 year olds. Former test player Farokh Engineer will be attending the event and presenting the prizes. Kwik cricket continues to expand in the UK, with 2013 seeing growth of 30% in all age groups. 2014 will see the game under review to ensure that it remains fit-for-purpose and is still achieving its aim of getting more children to play cricket. Howzat Youth Cricket Society is delighted to be involved with SCC’s Twenty20 tournament as it compliments its own

28 / SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

aims of promoting cricket in the community. Kwik cricket is an excellent way of encouraging new players to take up the game and is played regularly in Howzat’s development sessions. Since its formation five years ago Howzat’s leagues have become a regular fixture on the calendar for junior cricket players. As a result, the standard of cricket being played in U11, U13 and U15 has improved tremendously and as demand grows U10s are now getting in on the scene. This is all good news for cricket in Singapore. Howzat would like to see greater numbers of local children taking up the sport and will be looking at new initiatives in the coming year to try and encourage their participation. TIPS FOR TOURISTS

Twenty things you can find in Singapore or at the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) beginning with T (sort of).

1. TOURS.

13. TEQUILA.

2. TRAINS, OR MRT. A great way to get around. Local protocol dictates that visitors introduce themselves by shaking hands with all fellow passengers upon entering a compartment.

14. TUAS. Only on the way to Malaysia.

Take them if it’s your first (and possibly only) trip to Singapore. A quick way to see the sights. For cricketers the Duck Tours are not recommended.

3. TARIFFS. Huge on wine, hence the prices. Beer is better for you in the heat, see following item, unless you’re dealing with item 19. 4. TIGER BEER, which is the local brew. A study in the 1990s reputedly fingered Tiger as having more chemicals than any other national brew. Today the company (APB, which offers a Brewery Tour, see item 1) says there are no additives, although many users still claim heavy hangovers. Your choice. Experiment widely then head to the Towers (see item 16). 5. TWATS.

Plenty of them. Look for them after lunch on the first day of the T20 competition, where they will be walking anticlockwise around the ground wearing the following item.

6. TIES.... and telling you how good they once were at cricket. Don’t listen and don’t wear them.

7. TURF WICKETS. SCC is usually low and slow, much like the guys in ties. Adjust accordingly.

In abundance. Often used by SCC to deaden visiting fast bowlers the night before a match. This usually backfires because, as you know, most fast bowlers have an empty vessel on their shoulders perfectly designed to store the stuff without injury. Also used on item 17.

15. TRADITION.

SCC is chock full of it, mostly made up by the incumbent president. The accepted way of avoiding long conversations with club fogies (see 5 and 6) is to offer to buy them a drink and then to scuttle off to the following item.

16. THE TOWERS (also known as the four floors). This is a key tourist attraction -- not unlike the Tower of London -- where men have sometimes been known to lose their heads. Located at the top of Orchard Road it is a magnet for visitors from all parts of the globe. The casual visitor is almost certain to make new friends. 17. TOTTY.

Like tequila also in abundance. With apologies to the distaff side, Singapore has been described as a ‘single man’s paradise’, usually by married men. Ask the SCC Cougars (quick note: this means our second side not our WAGS) for directions or join their WhatsApp group. Again apologies for the sexist tone, but this is a club that until relatively recently had a men-only bar (sigh).

8. TANJONG PAGAR. Formerly the home of semi-sleazy bars now more inclined to fine dining and boutique hotels. For sleazy bars head to item 16.

18. TWITTER. Don’t, especially after item 17. Despite your stomach you are not Warnie.

9. TAXIS. Cheap, ubiquitous and a hugely valuable source of

19. TRACY, THE CHIEF SCORER.

information about the body politic, just ask.

10. TURF CLUB. Horse racing on Friday nights and Sunday for those of a mind to follow the nags. Kranji racetrack is one of the world’s finest racing venues.

11. TAMPINES. Pronounced ‘Tam-penis’. Not to be confused

with the Towers.

12. TOUGH LOVE. Long run-ups in the heat with a dead track

(see item 7).

30 / SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

Traditionally all T20 team managers buy Tracy at least one bottle of something nice at some stage of the tournament. This will be enforced by the convenor of the Cricket Section. It also means you get your choice of coloured pencil against your name if playing. And finally...

20. TROUSERS. A bit of a stretch this, but long trousers are

not needed in Stumps, the club’s best bar. It doesn’t mean you can take them off (see tequila) but it does mean you can wear shorts. See you there.
