66TH INTERNATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS TOURNAMENT 2013

MESSAGES

History will repeat itself in so far as rugby superstars are concerned. In the past we have had Jonah Lomu and Tana Umaga of New Zealand and Cecil Afrika of South Africa gracing the hallowed Padang turf. For the coming SCC 7s, Orene Ai’I, Benji Marshall and Rene Ranger may be making appearances, which will definitely be a mouth-watering spectacle for rugby fans. The standard of rugby has improved phenomenally over the years. This year again, top professional rugby players will mix their professionalism and expertise with the semi-professionals and the senior amateur players and I am confident the result will be a fiesta of top class rugby, sportsmanship and intense competition. A rugby treat seldom seen in any part of the globe. Returning champions Daveta from Fiji; Auckland and Northland from New Zealand; the French and Kenyan Development squads; Palmyra and Casuarina Cougars from Australia and South Africa’s Western Province are expected to battle it out for the much coveted Ablitt Cup. The other 12 teams, including our own Singapore Cricket Club team, I am sure, will give the favourites a run for their money. The 66th Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7’s returns to the iconic SCC Padang with an even bigger bang this year from 1 to 3 November 2013. I extend a very warm welcome from all at the Singapore Cricket Club to all teams, the players, officials, and supporters from all around the globe to our 66th SCC 7s, as it is affectionately called. As one of the premier club tournaments on the international rugby calendar and as one of Asia’s oldest and best known club tournaments, the SCC 7s continues to live up to its reputation of delivering new international superstars and teams with great history and performances in the past. 2013 SCC 7s will see the return of Fiji’s Daveta, winners of the past two years and the national development squads from France and Kenya. For the first time in Singapore, we will see the Auckland Rugby Union squad, a finalist in the inaugural World Cup 7s tournament which was held at Twickenham on 17 and 18 August 2013.

6

I am also happy to note that Marc Lansonneur, the Chairman of the SCC 7s Organising Committee and his Committee Members have been working extremely hard to ensure that the sponsorships, the tournament, the refereeing, the F&B facilities and all else will be top class. Thank you, Marc and his team! Our Sponsors, advertisers, tournament referees, spectators, Club management, the ground staff, Club Members and all the volunteers need a special mention for their outstanding efforts and contributions. The 66th SCC 7s will be the focus of all sporting activities in Singapore during the weekend of 1 to 3 November 2013. Great rugby, intense competition, fantastic hospitality and an excellent F&B spread await all at the Padang!

BOOSTING RUGBY 7S IN ASIA initiatives will surely provide a boost for Asian Rugby in general, and rugby 7s in particular. Promoting Rugby also means teaching and coaching the younger generations. We are very pleased to organise again, two Rugby youth events, the Schools and Colleges Tournament and the SCC Academy Cup, which will take place on the Padang a week before the SCC R7s. The popular semi-finals and finals of this competition will be held during the SCC R7s weekend. It is only possible to organise and eventually deliver such a significant event with the full support of many volunteers united by their passion for rugby as a sport and as a state of mind. I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has made this event happen:

Welcome to Asia, welcome to Singapore, for this 66th Singapore Cricket Club Rugby 7s (R7s) Tournament. We are honoured to have 20 high quality teams from around the world, competing on our centrally located Padang pitch. Besides the usual suspects who have been participating and supporting the SCC 7s for many years, we are glad to welcome new teams bringing fresh blood from Auckland New Zealand and NS Silverbacks as they join us for the first time. Both teams are sure to have great ambitions. The Casuarina Cougars will be celebrating their 30th participation in our tournament (yes, 30 years)!). In addition, we welcome the Borneo Eagles and French National Development Team back after a one year break. We look forward to three days of highly competitive rugby, friendly atmosphere, and great entertainment and welcome all our spectators – sponsors, rugby fans and families. For 66 years, the Singapore Cricket Club Rugby 7s Tournament has been actively contributing to the development, higher visibility and increasing popularity of rugby 7s in Asia. We are excited to be part of the continuing tradition. Singapore Sports Council and Singapore Rugby Union have confirmed their ambitions for this sport, announcing recently that they would officially bid for hosting the 2018 Rugby 7s World Cup. With the coming 2016 Olympics in Rio where rugby 7s will be introduced and the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, these

I wish to thank the R7s Organising Committee, consisting of volunteers and active Members from the Rugby Section, who have put in a huge effort and worked tirelessly in delivering this 2013 event. There are many new faces in this 2013 Committee, including myself. I have discovered how just how complex, but also how exciting, managing this event can be. Special thanks must go to the previous Committee, headed by Peter “Stitch” Hutton, for their past work and contribution. A big hand should also be given to our Rugby Section Members who have committed to help during these three busy days; and let’s not forget the Club and its staff whose passion and enthusiasm are vital in making this event a success. Needless to say nothing would be possible without our awesome sponsors, many of whom have provided years of continuous support in good and not so good economic times. Their faithful attendance and the guests they bring with them are key to what gives the SCC R7s its unique and friendly atmosphere. We have worked very hard to ensure that they and their guests find the 66th edition of the SCC R7s to be the best yet! Looking after these special people is not only our priority but also great pleasure. And finally, thanks to the public, a great mix of locals and visitors, rugby fans and their families, who come to enjoy competitive but entertaining rugby – they too play a big part in the warm and friendly atmosphere of the tournament. Now it is time for all of us to enjoy the 66th SCC Rugby 7s competitions. See you all on the Padang!

GREETINGS! On behalf of the Singapore Rugby Union I would like to extend a warm welcome to all participating teams and spectators to the 66th SCC International Rugby Sevens Tournament at the Padang. It is indeed amazing to note that the tournament is already 66 years old and there are teams that have been coming for over 30 years! We at Singapore Rugby are delighted to be associated with the SCC R7s, our home grown tournament which has undoubtedly become the best club 7s competition in the region. The tournament and the Singapore Cricket Club have and will continue to be a key partner in Singapore Rugby’s development with exciting developments ahead as we look to change the way we play the game on and off the field. This is what being part of the rugby community is all about, and I applaud those who have put in the time and the passion to make this happen. This year, the SCC R7s kicks off a massive “rugby fortnight” for players, officials and spectators both locally and regionally with the Singapore leg of the HSBC Asian Sevens series being hosted a week later at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium. It will certainly be a treat for all involved to have two successive weekends of top level rugby, but more than that a great opportunity to share experiences and give our Team Singapore the opportunity to really shine on home ground. Young players need heroes, and they will certainly have the best of the best here to learn and admire from these next two weeks. My best wishes to the participating teams and I hope your experience will be a memorable one, remembering always the importance of respectful competition which is unique to our game of rugby. To the spectators I am sure you will enjoy the competition which I am certain will leave you breathless. Have a great rugby time at the Padang!

It gives me great pleasure to once again welcome all players, sponsors, supporters and fans to our signature rugby event, the 66th edition of SCC Rugby 7s. It is a matter of considerable pride for all our Members and for the rugby loving community to host this grand event at the Padang. This annual fixture is a celebration of highly competitive rugby, but more than that, it is also a festival of sportsmanship, friendship and great entertainment. Being 7-a-side, it is all the more fast-paced and exciting. With 20 top-notch teams from different continents, the fans are in for a rugby treat. Defending champions, Daveta, will be looking to make it three titles in a row. Special welcome to the Casuarina Cougars from Darwin who will be participating for their 13th year. The Rugby 7s have also always supported youth development. This year, we will again be having the Schools & Colleges Tournament and the SCC Academy Cup. This is a great opportunity for the kids to play in front of huge crowds and also to get to watch some world class players and club teams. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Organising committee chaired by Marc Lansonneur and the Rugby Section Convenor, Graeme Burnett, for the huge contribution and time they have put in as volunteers to make this event happen. I know personally from experience that such events are not easy to organise and it is the love of the Club and the game that drives our many volunteers. Lastly, huge thanks to our sponsors and fans! It is you in the end that have always helped to make this event a success. And seeing from the growing numbers every year, we are truly grateful for your continued support. And finally, of course, the very best to all the players and teams.

THE SINGAPORE CRICKET CLUB HERITAGE TRAIL

E

stablished in 1852, the Singapore Cricket Club is today a premier sports and social club in Asia. It is the second oldest sports club in Singapore, junior by 10 years to the Singapore Sporting Club, now the Singapore Turf Club. The Club stands at the centre of the city’s colonial heart, a public space that has witnessed many of Singapore’s triumphs and defeats, upheavals, independence and, finally, the annual National Day Parades on 9 August. Nearby historic buildings include Raffles Hotel, St Andrew’s Cathedral, City Hall (on the steps of which the Japanese surrendered to the British in 1945), the Old Supreme Court (to re-open with City Hall as the National Art Gallery of Singapore in 2014), Old Parliament House (now the Arts House), Victoria Theatre and Memorial Hall, and Empress Place Building (formerly government offices and now the Asian Civilisations Museum). Cricket was played on the Padang as early as 1837, only 18 years after Sir Stamford Raffles founded the settlement of Singapore in 1819, but it was not until 1852 that the first meetings were called to discuss the formal establishment of a cricket club. There have been no fewer than three clubhouse buildings on the Padang, the first erected some time in the 1860s, the second in 1877. The third pavilion, which forms the core of the present Clubhouse building, was built in 1884. It was extended in 1907, and the northern and southern wings that we see today were added in 1922.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS The Club’s beginnings were quite humble, with the first 28 Members in 1853 being mostly men working in the British business and mercantile community, usually as clerks or “junior assistants”. In the 1880s, however,

14

Singapore versus Johor, 1927-1928

membership had grown to almost 400 and was seen as a social feather in the cap, not only by the businessmen who founded the Club but also by the power-brokers and decision-makers in government. Presidents in the early days of the Club included several governors of the then Straits Settlements: Sir Cecil Clementi Smith (SCC President, 1883, Governor, 18871893), Sir Frank Athelstane Swettenham (SCC President, 1902-1903, Governor, 1901-1904) and Sir Arthur Henderson Young (SCC President, 1909-1910, Governor, 1911-1920). It was not all cricket on the Padang. A popular event almost up to World War I was the SCC Annual Sports, and the SCC Athletic Sports were an integral part of this programme up to 1900. Football of both sorts, soccer and rugby, was established in Singapore in the 1880s, while an annual tennis tournament was initiated in 1875. Hockey arrived early in Singapore, in 1892, considering that the rules of the game had been established in Britain only in 1849 and the English Hockey Association established only in 1886. Billiards was no doubt played at

FEATURE the Club, but it is seldom mentioned in existing records. Lawn bowls began at the Club in the 1870s, and the tournaments were held regularly from 1898. Membership of the Club had reached 878 by 1914. World War I affected Singapore sport badly, however (although the crown colony was not directly involved in the conflict), and the supply of sporting “manpower” was sharply reduced. Cricket suffered in particular, and in 1922 the Club was unable to make up a full team to send to play in Hong Kong. Morale must have been improved by the visit, in 1927, of Charles Gordon Macartney and his Australian cricket XI. Macartney’s team, which included eight Test cricketers, actually lost one match, against Malaya. Another major cricketing event occurred 10 years later, in 1937 — a three-day match by Malaya versus Sir Julien Cahn’s XI, the first English cricket team to visit Malaya or the Singapore Cricket Club. On 15 February 1942, Singapore fell to the Japanese, and most Europeans who had not escaped were interned. The Club was closed for the duration of the war. Even after Singapore was liberated, in 1945, it was clear that life in the crown colony would never be the same again. Elections in 1959 were won easily by Lee Kuan Yew’s People’s Action Party, which proceeded to form a strong majority government in a self- governing Singapore. It was reported that the new government was considering taking back the Padang from its lessees, the Singapore Cricket Club and the Singapore Recreation Club. In the event this did not happen, but the government did insist, in 1962, that all clubs in Singapore maintain at least 50 per cent Singaporean membership. Prime Minister Lee made his first official appearance at the Club in 1963, when his wife presented the Lee Kuan Yew Shield to the Club’s ladies’ hockey team. He returned in 1970 to accept the honorary title of “Visitor” to the Club.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS Between 1959 and the early 1970s, numerous cricket teams of Test or first class standard visited Singapore and graced the Padang. The most notable of these were: • The Australian Test team to India and Pakistan in 1959. • The MCC team to New Zealand in 1961. • Ron Roberts’ Commonwealth XI in 1962. • E.W. Swanton’s Commonwealth XI in 1964. • Joe Lister’s International XI in 1968. • The MCC XI on its East African and East Asian tour in 1970. The Indian and Pakistan Test teams returning from their tours of Australia in 1968 and 1972 respectively also visited Singapore. Unfortunately, their one-day fixtures were washed out. Although the future of the Club looked grim during the 1960s, because of declining membership, financial difficulties and the possibility of government action, it survived (largely because of the sterling work of Club

FEATURE President Andrew Gilmour, after whom the Gilmour Room is named), and during the 1970s and 1980s it began to prosper once more. Concern for the community became a hallmark of the Club during the 1980s, the most outstanding example of this being an SCC Extravaganza charity day in 1984, in which year Singapore celebrated 25 years of self-government. The event raised $285,000 for the Community Chest of Singapore. Seven-a-side rugby teams had competed for the Ablitt Cup since as long ago as the 1940s, but it was not until the 1980s that the SCC Rugby Sevens was expanded to become a truly international competition. The SCC Soccer Sevens has become Rugby 7s Organising Committee, 1984 an equally popular annual event, and in 1991 it was enhanced by the presence of British soccer stars Gordon Banks, Bobby Charlton, Roger Hunt, Jonah Lomu visited the Club and played on the Padang. 1. THE ABLITT CUP The Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) International Rugby Sevens has attained the status of the region’s premier international club tournament. Teams are invited from around the world to play for the prestigious Ablitt Cup. The Ablitt Cup is named after Bernard E. Ablitt who was Convenor of the SCC Rugby Section from 1931-1932. From 1938 -1939, he was the President of the SCC. The silver Ablitt Cup was donated by Mrs Katherine Parentis in 1947 for the winners of the first seven-a-side tournament organised by the by the SCC Rugby Section. The club tournament has since become an annual competition and one of the world’s oldest rugby sevens tournaments.

2. JOHN CLARK TROPHY Singapore Schools compete for the John Clark Trophy. This is an award donated by friends of the late John Clark, a rugby stalwart and one-time Vice President of the SCC. John Clark was born in Penang in 1935 and, after an education in the UK, returned to life in Asia. Rugby was his passion and some of his happiest days were spent on the Padang in the 1960s where his generous advice was valued by the younger rugby players of the era.

4. LEN FOSTER CUP Len Foster was a former President of the Singapore Cricket Club. He was a great proponent of Rugby Youth Development within the SCC. He was also an ex-player for the Club, and recognized the importance of local youth development as the future for rugby. He was a prime mover in re-igniting the SCC Colts programme within the Rugby Section and also in steering development projects in tandem with the mission of the SCC International Rugby 7s. The Len Foster Cup is presented for the Under-14 category of the Schools & Colleges tournament, and was named in Len’s honour in 2009. This is in celebration of his tireless passion for developing youth development, and constantly believing in rugby’s young talents.

DAVETA FROM FIJI RETAIN THE ABLITT CUP AS HEAVY RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN THE SPIRIT OF THE BIGGEST SCC SEVENS TO DATE By Andrew Douglas

W

ith the strongest line-up of teams ever assembled for the tournament, the 65th SCC International Rugby Club Sevens was held on the weekend of 2 to 4 November 2012 and what a weekend it was! The stands were packed, beers were drunk in abundance and the heavens opened with a sustained rainstorm of biblical proportions. But the show went on, the crowds partied on and everyone was rewarded with a fantastic spectacle of sevens rugby. With such a strong competition across the board, it was inevitable that there would be a few surprises and there were some major shocks in the first round of pool games on Friday evening though the quality teams did shine through in the end, with a marvellous Fijian Daveta team overcoming Rugby Ecosse in an absorbing final on Sunday evening played on a heavy, mud-soaked Padang. It was the Australian teams who were quickest out of the blocks, springing some surprise results in the Pool games, with Casuarina Cougars from Darwin overcoming Ponsonby from New Zealand 14-5 and beating NS Wanderers 14-12 to top their Pool. Both Randwick and Cottesloe turned over previous

20

winners Penguins in their Pool games, mixing up the draw for the Ablitt Cup whilst Sunnybank from Queensland took Rugby Ecosse all the way in a 7-7 tie. The SCC side were in a tough group and gave Cup holders, Daveta a fright with an encouraging first half contest, but the Fijians lifted their game and raced away after the break. The SCC then blew their Cup chances by going down to East Arnhem in a match they really should have won, ending up in the Bowl competition on Sunday. Newcomers Northland, the NPC side from Auckland impressed on their SCC debuts despite being given a tough draw with other debutants Western Province Institute from South Africa. The weekend was wonderfully enhanced with some schools rugby with the finals of the SCC Rugby Academy Digital Realty Cup with children from U6 to U12 playing on the Padang as well as the finals of the SCC Schools & Colleges Tournament where local schools battled it out at U14, U16 and U18 age groups. And so to Finals day on the Sunday. A day that started with beautiful sunshine saw the rain come down for three solid hours on Sunday afternoon and

FEATURE: 2012 IN REVIEW saw the cream of the crop moving into the semi-finals, Northland were desperately unlucky to go out to an improving Rugby Ecosse in the quarters, with the latter up against a rejuvenated Penguins who had finally started to show their class, defeating a much improved Casuarina side in the quarters. It wasn’t the conditions for running rugby, with the Padang like a quagmire and the rain belting down, and there wasn’t much to separate Rugby Ecosse from Penguins, just a single conversion separating the teams at the close, with the men from the north edging a close 7-5 win and nudging them through to the Cup final with Daveta. Daveta, with quality throughout their squad faced a vastly-improved Randwick side who had beaten Aussie rivals, Sunnybank 12-5 in their quarter-final. After a few under-par years at the SCC Sevens, the Galloping Greens were back challenging for the Cup but fell just short against Daveta, going down 24-12 in an absorbing encounter. The stage was set for an exciting Ablitt Cup Final. In the Bowl final, the entertaining and feisty Swedish Vikings team overcame Impala from Kenya, giving it everything they had to take some silverware on their long journey home. The Plate final was played between the temperamental French Pyrenees, who had struggled in the first round, and a strong Cottesloe side, who having dispatched Perth rivals, Palmyra in the semis, romped to victory over the Frenchmen, 34-0. And so to the Ablitt Cup final, North vs. South. Rugby Ecosse, a squad with players from Scotlands national

sevens program against Daveta, the magical Fijians, and the current Cup holders. The Scots started well and opened the scoring and when they went further ahead it appeared the Fijians were finding the heavy conditions more of challenge than Rugby Ecosse team. But inspired by the hugely impressive Samisoni Nasagavesi (Player of the Tournament/Final), the Fijians came racing back to hold a narrow half-time lead. With two minutes to go with the Fijians ahead 19-17, and with both teams out on their feet, it really could have gone either way. But the Daveta boys upped a gear and took the final score and victory 26-17. A terrific final and the culmination of a superb weekend of sport at the Singapore Cricket Club! 66TH INTERNATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS TOURNAMENT 2013

FEATURE: 2012 IN REVIEW

F

or the first time ever in 2012, the SCC Sevens also hosted the final leg of Asian Sevens Series which doubled as the Asian qualifier of the Rugby World Cup Sevens which will be held in Moscow in 2013. This provided an ideal warm-up to the main event and gave some of the minnows of world rugby an opportunity to show how rugby is developing in the Asia region. The Asian powerhouses, Japan and Hong Kong, as expected, proved to be several classes above the rest and were probably the only two teams who could have competed in the Ablitt Cup had they taken part, but there were still lots of competitive matches to watch as 12 teams fought it out for their final IRB Asian Sevens rankings and the chance to play on the big stage in Moscow at the RWC Sevens in 2013 against the top tier nations.

With the first three teams qualifying for the RWC Sevens next year, Japan and Hong Kong battled it out in the final with Japan once again edging out Hong Kong in a very tight final, coming from behind to score the winning try for a 14-12 victory, with only seconds remaining on the clock. The final qualifying place for RWC Sevens was decided in the 3rd place play-off where the Philippines edged out South Korea, 22-19. It was a great way to begin the weekend at the SCC Sevens and the finals were played in front of packed grandstands giving the players a great experience in what is always one of the most memorable weekends of Sevens rugby in the Asia region.

Singapore, spurred on by the home crowd and playing in familiar conditions finished in 8th place their highest place finish of the season and a huge improvement on performance earlier in the season. The Singapore team easily beat Thailand, took China to a close game before being knocked out of the Cup by Japan. The Singapore team included numerous SCC players including Hairul Naim, Bryan Ng, Kevin Loo, Matt Head and Mohd Suhaimi, all of whom will have been delighted to have been part of the national team’s best showing of the year on home turf.

66TH INTERNATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS TOURNAMENT 2013

FEATURE

2013 PREDICTIONS By Andrew Douglas

T

he 66th Singapore Cricket Club Sevens will be a cracker. Featuring the highest quality competition that has been seen on the Padang to date, we have a few new teams that may well shake up the old established order and make 2013 the best SCC Sevens yet! Back to defend their Ablitt Cup title will be crowd favourites, Daveta. Winners of the Cup in the last two years, they will be the team to beat and there are a host of teams who will be hoping to push them all the way. They proved last year that they can play wonderful Sevens rugby in any conditions when they overcame a determined Rugby Ecosse from Scotland in the mud and the rain. Cup winners in 2010, Penguins are back and after winning the HKFC 10s in March, the famous invitational side will be expecting to improve on last year’s SCC Sevens semi-final loss with Penguins Team Manager, Craig Brown expecting to bring in some top Sevens players from New Zealand to regain the title. The Land of the Long White Cloud will also provide who could be the main rivals to champions, Daveta. For the first time at the SCC Sevens, an Auckland Rugby Union Sevens team will be on the Padang. Having gone down to the ACT Brumbies in the final of the inaugural World Club Sevens at Twickenham in August 2013, Auckland will be strong and desperate to lift some silverware. Lead by former IRB Player of the Year, Orene Ai’i, and possibly featuring several All Black Sevens players, they will provide a mighty challenge for the magical Fijians. Also making their SCC Sevens debuts in 2013 will be the invitational Asia-Pacific Dragons. Formerly known as the Asia Pacific Barbarians, the APD combines players from across the Asia with superstars from the Asian region. This gives a few of the best players from Sri Lanka, Japan and Hong Kong the chance to line up with the likes of George Gregan, Justin Marshall, Rico Gear, Mils Muliaina, Anthony Tuitavake and Elvis Seveailii. We can hopefully see some of the greats of world rugby on the Padang and it will be interesting to see if they can compete at the shortened version of the game against Daveta and the younger teams, who have youth and pace in abundance. Newcomers in 2012 and returning for another crack at the title are Northland Rugby who will have learned a great deal from last year’s SCC Sevens and with that experience under their belts should prove to be one of

28

the top Cup teams. Similarly, Western Province Institute, the academy feeder team for both Western Province and the Stormers, are back again and coach Norman Laker is expecting to reach the Cup semi-finals and after that, of course, anything can happen. Sydney powerhouses Randwick and Queensland’s Sunnybank are expected to provide the strongest challenge from Australia. Randwick, the Galloping Greens, are one of Australia’s most successful clubs having produced well over 100 Wallabies and will be hoping to continue that winning tradition at the SCC and impressed in 2012 reaching the semi-finals before going out 24-12 to winners, Daveta. Similarly Sunnybank from Brisbane have played some very entertaining and competitive matches on the Padang in the last couple of years and will be hoping that such experience will give them that extra bit of lift to make the Cup quarters. The two Malaysian sides this year will also be out to impress and both could spring surprises. Fahmy Jalil’s NS Wanderers from Negri Sembilan have consistently made the Cup quarter finals year in year out at the SCC and given a good draw will once again be right up there, their mix of Fijians and Kiwis are always competitive, supported by the best of local Malaysian players. The Borneo Eagles will be the Tournament’s dark horses for sure, and having won the Darwin Sevens earlier in 2013 will fear nobody. The boys from Sandakan always play quality Sevens rugby and with the core of the team having ITM Cup experience in NZ they will be a force this year in the Cup. Two teams from Australia’s Northern Territories, Casuarina Cougars and East Arnhem have really upped their game at the SCC in the last few years. Perennial Bowl contenders three years ago, both sides have made a superb effort in raising their performances with some cracking games and both are fully capable of pulling off a shock win against one of the big guns.

66TH INTERNATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS TOURNAMENT 2013

FEATURE Casuarina, in their 30th year at the SCC Sevens – a truly remarkable achievement, will be hoping to make their mark particularly after a superb effort last year when they reached the Cup quarters. Casuarina won the Ablitt Cup on their first appearance in 1983 when club stalwart Siggi Bubba was in his early 40s and he will be delighted to see do them do well. The main challenge from the Northern Hemisphere at the SCC this year will come from France. The France Sevens Development team who impressed in their last appearance in 2011 will have their sights on making the Cup semi-finals at the very least. With full-time athletes now contracted to the France Sevens programme, the previously under-funded French Sevens programme has taken on a new lease of life which has been reflected in improved results in the IRB Sevens Series. Nobody ever

really knows what you will get with the French teams but it will be a pleasure to see their open attacking brand of rugby on the Padang. Last year’s Plate Runnersup, the popular French Pyrenees will also be hoping to show the character and flair that enabled them to win the Plate in 2011 From Western Australia, we see the return of rivals Cottesloe and Palmyra, both of whom did well in 2012, Cottesloe in particular were unlucky to draw Daveta in the first round of the Cup and then ran away with the Plate romping home pretty unchallenged to win the Plate final 30-0. They will be hoping for a little more luck when the Cup draw is made on Saturday night to progress further. Palmyra will be competing for the 31st year, a wonderful achievement for the club and they have always remained competitive – they will have their eyes on the Plate in 2013 but will enjoy themselves regardless as they also do at the SCC Sevens. The NS Silverbacks from Sydney are an unknown quantity hailing as they do from the rugby league

dominated Western Suburbs. They have impressed at the COBRA Tens in previous years and it will be interesting to see how they fair on the Padang at the SCC. The Bowl competition will be equally hard-fought with hosts, the Singapore Cricket Club aiming to lift silverware for the first time in many years. Led by inspirational skipper Simon Etheredge, they will be expecting to put on a good show in the pool rounds and maybe take a scalp or two on the way. The African side, Impala from Kenya will probably be favourites for the Bowl. They play an entertaining brand of rugby sevens and with Kenya impressing at IRB level in the last couple of years, silverware at the SCC is certainly within their capabilities. It has been a long tradition at the SCC Sevens of having military teams compete and there has been participation going back 60 years. Army teams from New Zealand were regular participants in the 1970s and 1980s, and the British Army competed in the 1990s and 2000s, winning the Ablitt Cup in 2004. We had HMZNZ Te Mana win silverware in 2010 and in 2013 we welcome the Sevens team from HMS Daring, a Royal Navy destroyer. They will be well supported by the crowd and their crew and they will be competitive on Sunday in the Bowl. It’s the strongest line-up to date! Twenty teams from all over the world, well-prepared and determined to pick up some silverware in one of the most unique settings in the world – the SCC Sevens on the Padang. It’s a great tournament, so get settled in, take in some world-class club rugby, some marvellous players, be part of what is a superb and friendly atmosphere. Will Daveta retain their title? Will the newcomers Auckland or Penguins present a formidable challenge? Or will there be even greater surprises from Northland or Borneo Eagles or France? Who knows? Crack open a few cold beers, sit back and enjoy a fabulous weekend of Sevens rugby!

SCC RUGBY ACADEMY

T

he SCC Rugby Academy was founded in January 2012 by four Singapore Cricket Club Rugby Section members keen to offer the best possible playing and development rugby experience for children in Singapore from as young as five right up to the age of 14. We are delighted and honoured to be associated with this remarkable

34

and iconic club, one of the oldest sports clubs in Singapore which is steeped in charm, tradition and history. The SCC Rugby Academy is open to Members and non-members of the Singapore Cricket Club and is intended to provide a real “club” opportunity for players who can, if they choose, have a life-long playing affiliation with the SCC and rugby. Training is on Saturday mornings at the Dempsey fields and there are regular opportunities to play and train on The Padang in the city centre – one of the most spectacular venues in rugby. Our children regularly play against other clubs in Singapore and have toured to Hong Kong and Malaysia to compete in international competitions All our coaches are IRB qualified and current players – this skill and passion for the game means our coaching staff are dedicated to ensuring our children improve but also learn the values of this great game- skill, teamwork , dedication, resilience and perhaps most importantly enjoyment. We also have managed to attract several ex- international players to come and run coaching clinics for our children and have a drink or two with our parents. We currently run several teams at several age groups from U5 up to U13 and also have a vibrant Girls Touch section. Each age group has a head coach, assistant coach/coaches and a parent co-ordinator. As of September 2013, only 18 months after being set up, we boast a membership base of almost 300 children.

Rendang

Bak Kut Teh

DINING

The Nasi Padang belt of Kandahar Street, located at the historic Kampong Glam area, houses numerous Nasi Padang stalls which are known for their tender and aromatic Rendang. These include Sabar Menanti and Warong Nasi Pariaman, two extremely popular restaurants in Singapore. Other Indonesian restaurants serving authentic Rendang, albeit in a more modern setting, include Garuda Padang and The Rice Table, both located along Orchard Road.

Delight your taste buds with Singapore’s signature dishes. Be sure to try the Fish Head Curry that is sure to spice things up a little with its piquant gravy. The Bak Kut Teh and Rendang are also the picks of the lot, being the favourite dishes among locals. Bak Kut Teh Bak Kut Teh literally means “meat bone tea”, which consists of meaty pork ribs simmered in a unique broth of herbs and spices. Bak Kut Teh ranks amongst the all-time favourites such as Hainanese Chicken Rice and Nasi Lemak. The Bak Kut Teh concoction in Singapore is so popular that it’s now a flavour in instant noodles and there’s even a DIY kit, consisting of a soup base, that’s ideal as a culinary souvenir from Singapore. A bowl of Bak Kut Teh tends to come with complementing dishes like preserved vegetables and braised beancurd skins. It can also be enjoyed with rice or noodles and You Tiao (deep-fried dough fritters). Ignite your taste buds with a bowl of Bak Kut Teh which reflects Singapore’s diverse cultural influences. Some of the most famous Bak Kut Teh can be found along Balestier Road (Founder Bak Kut Teh 347 Balestier Road), North Bridge Road (Song Fa Bak Kut Teh 11 New Bridge Road) and Rangoon Road (Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs Eating House 8 Rangoon Road). Rendang Rendang is a quintessential Malay dish with Indonesian origins. Similar to curry, Rendang is traditionally made from beef, slowly simmered with coconut milk and spices till the meat is tender and the gravy has been absorbed. Other meats that can be frequently prepared as Rendang include chicken and lamb. Lemongrass, galangal, garlic, turmeric, ginger and chilies are some of the spices used, pounded into a rempah (spice mixture) which is then used to coat the beef. Coconut milk is then added and it is left to stew for a few hours.

44

Fish Head Curry

Fish Head Curry The famous Singaporean fish head curry is the result of a hybrid of Indian, Chinese and Malay influences which is why it is one of the spiciest, most tantalizing and bestloved dishes in the city. Originally created by Singapore’s Malayalee (an Indian ethnic group from the Southern Indian state of Kerala) community, it is prepared by stewing the head of a red snapper fish in a spicy-hot curry with vegetables. The Chinese tend to have it alongside smaller dishes of vegetables and meat; head down to McCullum Street in the heart of the city for a taste at the famous Ocean Fish Head Curry eatery. The Indians likewise tend to eat it in a similar manner, having it with rice, poppadum and Indian pickle; check out the Banana Leaf Apollo in Little India, as well as the famous Muthu’s Curry on Race Course Road, which is just a few yards away.

BEHIND THE WHISTLE

THE TOURNAMENT MATCH OFFICIALS By Matt Oakley MVO MBE

B

efitting its reputation as one of the world’s premier international invitational 7s tournaments, the SCC 7s attracts quality referees. In past years, the tournament has been officiated by the likes of Derek Bevan, who refereed the 1991 Rugby World Cup final. IRB 15-a-side panel referees followed for number of years, such as Steve Walsh who is now in the world’s top 10. However, the 7s game is now moving at pace, literally, and so it is young legs and gas to burn that are required. Of our more recent 7s alumni, Andrew Lees from Australia went on to be the no one 7s referee in the world in 2011, whilst Gabby Lee of Hong Kong refereed the 2009 IRB Rugby World Cup 7s Women’s Final in Dubai. Some of this weekend’s team may reach similar heights and go on to professional careers; possibly officiating at the 2016 Olympic 7s in Rio. The SCC is delighted that our tournament helps aspiring referees to achieve such success in their careers. This year we welcome Ben Crouse from South Africa, who is on the IRB’s Development Panel and who will stay on in Singapore after this weekend to referee in next weekend’s Singapore round of the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) HSBC Asian Rugby Sevens Series at Yio Chu Kang Stadium. We also welcome Hamish Walker from the Auckland Rugby Referees Association, who is in the New Zealand RFU’s Referee Development Group directly below the NZ national panel. Ben goes on to referee at the Bayleys Fiji Coral Coast Sevens on 14-16 November. We also welcome a referee each from the UAE and Hong Kong Referee Societies, who are Exchange Referees for two Singapore-based referees who then receive “reciprocal” invites to officiate in the annual Dubai and Hong Kong 7s tournaments, including being Assistant Referees in the IRB HSBC Sevens World Series rounds there. The Club funds the Singapore hotel accommodation this weekend for these visitors, so in its small way contributes to these significant development opportunities for them.

ANTI-DOPING AWARENESS The IRB is undertaking the process of increasing Anti-Doping awareness across all Unions and Regional Associations in Membership of the IRB. In addition to the current Anti-Doping Education resources available on www.keeprugbyclean.com, the IRB has developed an e-learning programme highlighting the dangers and consequences of doping, strict liability, WADA Prohibited List and other important

46

From the North Midlands Referees Society in England we welcome John Kelly, a regular visitor to the many social 10s tournaments around South East Asia. Former Club Member, John Nuttall returns year on year from the New South Wales Referee Society, along with Kim Short from Western Australia with Palmyra. Steve Barber, a long-term stalwart of Indonesian rugby also joins us this year to help on the sidelines. Last, but by no means least, the Singapore Rugby Union’s Referee Department provides the bulk of the match officials, including ARFU panel referees Azhar Yusof, Paul MacKay and Justin Wang and up to 20 other assistant referees and in-goal judges. The Club thanks the SRU as ever for this. The SCC 7s’ endorsement by the Asian Rugby Football Union means that we have ARFU panel citing commissioners and judicial officers, who manage the tournament’s disciplinary processes meeting full IRB Regulation 17 standards. The tournament match officials are once again overseen by club member, Matt Oakley, who is himself on the IRB’s staff in Asia. The SCC 7s gives its referees an opportunity to interact with counterparts from major and minor rugby unions and referee top class 7s Rugby, plus make new friends for life. We wish all match officials a great weekend. The tournament couldn’t happen without them. Finally, if you are interested in refereeing (or sponsoring our match officials next year!), please feel free to approach Matt in the match officials area.

topics. The e-learning programme is linked to the IRB Passport and it is not just for Players but also for parents and Player’s support personnel. The SCC is happy to promote this e-learning programme to the Rugby community at this year’s SCC 7s and encourages all players participating at this year’s tournament – and indeed at every level of the Game – to complete the e-learning programme.

THE CASUARINA COUGARS (Australia)

T

he Casuarina Cougars have been contesting Rugby in the Northern Territory (NT) for over 35 years and has produced some of the NT’s best representative players. With so many players, it is worth mentioning three of the best known – John Connolly, who went on to coach the Queensland Reds, Bruce Kennon, and Wallaby Jim Williams. Before the introduction of professionalism into the game of Rugby, Casuarina RUFC enjoyed national and state representative players from North South Wales and Queensland coming to Darwin and playing with the Cougars during the off season. This also included the once high profile Casuarina Invitational XV (vs) Darwin Mosquitoes XV that would attract national Test players from Australia and New Zealand to Darwin to

play in this spectacular match. Sadly for Darwin and Rugby, those days have long passed with even fringe players being semi-professional and on contracts with their respective unions. The club has an affiliation membership base of more than 100 registered senior players and over 120 junior registered players. The club fields every grade that the Northern Territory Rugby Union allows with A Grade and B Grade in the seniors and Under 6s through to Under 18s in the junior ranks. This in itself makes the Cougars one the strongest clubs in the Darwin and Northern Territory Competition. Casuarina Cougars have been regular participants at the SCC Sevens since the 1990s.

COTTESLOE RUGBY UNION CLUB (Australia)

T

he best vista of any sporting club in the world” is how a world-renowned rugby commentator recently described the location of the Cottesloe Rugby Union Club while looking out across the rugby pitch to a backdrop of a sparkling blue Indian Ocean and Rottenest Island. Cottesloe is the oldest rugby club in Western Australia, established on Cottesloe Oval in 1893. The team was originally known as the Cottesloe Pirates and donned a black jersey with an intimidating insignia of skull and crossbones over the left breast (a picture of the original team is displayed in the clubhouse). Although the “Pirates”, who fielded just one senior team in their initial years, disbanded in 1923, their fierce passion lives on in two shades of blue who, with the exception of the war years have not missed a season since. Today Cottesloe RFC boasts a membership of more

50

than 400 playing members that range in age from 6 to 60 years old playing across junior, senior and veteran teams. In the past four years our premier grade side has won a Rugby WA Grand Final, been the losing finalist in the following year’s grand final and made a preliminary final playoff the following two years. Our juniors have won numerous pennants over the years and a number of Wallabies and Super 15 players call Cottesloe home when not on representative duties. Collectively as a club we have been named WA Club Champions for two consecutive seasons by consistently winning more games and fielding more teams than any other club in WA. This past season we have seen one of our home-grown players recognised with the captaincy of the Emirates Western Force “A” team along with a number of raising stars named in the Force Academy.

DAVETA (Fiji)

F

rom its humble beginnings in 1989 and subsequent emergence on the international club scene in 1992, Daveta Rugby has grown into one of the strongest international club sevens teams in the world. The team is well known for entertaining spectators both on and off the field with their athleticism, power, flare and great sportsmanship that was bred in the team’s homeland in the Fijian Rugby stronghold of the Nadroga province. Daveta has proven to be an extremely successful side winning 7s and 10s tournaments in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Daveta is about more than just winning though. They have a long and proud history of providing development opportunities for Fijian players who may otherwise not experience competing against some of

58

the greatest rugby players from around the world. The Daveta development programme employs a holistic approach to development with the view to develop “rounded and grounded” professional athletes prepared for representation both on and off the field whilst providing opportunities off-field after rugby. The programme has resulted in a large number of players moving on to represent on the international stage in both 7s and 15s. An example is the 2011 Digicell Fiji 7s squad that boasted a total of eight former Daveta players. Daveta is lucky to have the support of Max Norris and Larry Harding of Presidio Capital who have been instrumental over the years in providing the team the opportunity to continue to compete in competitions around the world.

They currently compete in the ITM Cup and are a primary feeder team for the Blues who play in the Super 15 competition. The Auckland Sevens team competed in the World Club Sevens at Twickenham in July 2013, where after beating

The Auckland Sevens squad is led by former All Black Sevens player, Orene Ai’i who was awarded the IRB World Sevens Player of the Year in 2005 and provides a wealth of experience to the team which also includes numerous younger players who played for NZ in the Junior World Cup.

NORTHLAND RUGBY UNION (New Zealand)

T

he Northland Rugby Union attended the SCC International Rugby Sevens tournament for the first time in 2012 where we were knocked out by Rugby Ecosse in the quarter finals. Earlier this year at the New Zealand National Sevens tournament, Northland were knocked out by eventual champions Tarankai at the same stage of the tournament. We look forward to contesting the 2013 SCC International Rugby Sevens tournament and are a year wiser from the experience of 2012. There are approximately 600 rugby clubs throughout New Zealand across 26 provincial unions and the Northland Rugby Union boasts almost 9% of these with 54 active rugby clubs ranging from Wellsord in the south to Ngati Kuri, Te Hapua on the shores of the Parengarenga Harbour in the far north. We are the largest geographical province in New Zealand and in 2013 we had 7,006 registered rugby players, the eighth largest in New Zealand supported by 106 registered referees and 491 registered coaches. We are broken into six sub unions starting with Mangonui in the far north, Hokianga, Bay of Islands, Whangarei and districts, Northern Wairoa and Rodney.

Each sub union administers their own junior rugby competitions. We oversee an Under 18 Northland wide competition incorporating eight teams and five senior competitions totalling 44 teams. The North Auckland Rugby Union was formed in 1920 and become Northland in 1994. At the start of the 2013 representative season 898 players had represented this province at first class level with 41 Super Rugby players from our region, eight New Zealand Sevens representatives and 31 All Blacks with the most recent Rene Ranger. We have held the Ranfurly Shield four times – 1950, 1960, 1971 and 1978, and currently play in the 14-team New Zealand Provinicial Championship (NPC) known as the ITM Cup.

IMPALA (Kenya)

R

ugby in Kenya has a long and illustrious history. Started by settlers during the colonial era, the game was a preserve of the colonials and the first generation of African players started playing only after independence in 1960s, doing the groundwork and preparing the way for the tenacious second and third generations of the 1970s, 80s and early 90s to hoist Kenya’s name up in the rugby arena. Impala in particular underlines Kenya’s success story of rugby. Having been raised from obscurity, the team now dominates the local rugby scene. Impala has also nurtured and produced top players who have proceeded to shine for Kenya in the international rugby arena. Among them is Innocent Simiyu and Brian Nyikuli who are two of Kenya’s flourishing participants in the IRB sevens series. Impala’s policy of recruiting fresh blood into their ranks and improving the depth of

players in the squad can only serve to bring glory for the gazelles in the foreseeable future. Impala have been regular competitors at the SCC Sevens and participate with the support of Standard Chartered Bank.

WESTERN PROVINCE RUGBY INSTITUTE (South Africa)

T

he Western Province Rugby Institute (WPRI) was established in Stellenbosch in 2007 by Jacques Hanekom, Nick Mallet and Steph Nell to serve as the primary talent development academy at Under 19 and Under 20 level for the Western Province Rugby Union. The WPRI has become the leading player development institute in South-Africa. Since 2007 the WPRI has produced five Springboks (Francois Hougaard, Juan De Jong, Eben Etzebeth, Frans Malherbe and Siya Kholisi), two of whom took part in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The WPRI has produced over 30 players who are currently part of the five South African Super Rugby Franchises. The words “academy” and “development” are mostly misused as well as misunderstood. This is due to the fact that most academies are nothing but sport science laboratories that produce athletes and not

62

necessarily rugby players. People tend to think that you can develop a rugby player in a laboratory – this is a direct result of overemphasis on the Sport Science/ Conditioning approach. In our opinion, young players can only develop in context. In rugby, that context is their team. In other words there are no substitutes for playing.

012 marks over 25 years of the HSBC Penguins playing and coaching rugby in Asia, and Singapore was the second place visited on that first trip to play 15s in 1992. Prior to that, the Penguins had played twice in the Hong Kong 7s. The trip back in 1992 was a journey into the unknown with the first stop Jakarta, followed by Singapore (two matches) and then Hong Kong. What an experience – all on that first trip to Singapore left with memories of a great place, wonderful hosts, loads of fun and two hard fought matches. Since our last visit to Singapore a year ago, the HSBC Penguins have been busy playing in England, Hong Kong and Sweden and coaching in Hong Kong, Dubai, Sweden, Qatar and Bahrain. Two matches were played in Trelleborg (Southern Sweden) on our summer tour. The first against the Pingvin Club in celebration of their 50th anniversary and the second against a regional selection. The HSBC Penguin Coaching Academy has been busy running grass roots coaching activities. A full week of activities in Singapore has been completed and next the Academy coaches cross into Malaysia and head north to Kelantan to continue with grass roots coaching activities in local schools. The HSBC Penguins will stop

64

on the way to KL in Port Dickson, where they will run a coaching session for local children, before arriving in KL on Wednesday to prepare for the COBRA 10s. From all the HSBC Penguins, we hope all honoured guests, teams, officials, organisers, the SCC Club Members and the rugby public have a great tournament and plenty of fun and some spectacular 7s action.
