MESSAGES

Singapore Cricket Club’s undoubted status as a premier cricket club is not restricted to its playing ability. It is common knowledge that SCC has clinched numerous trophies and produced a significant number of quality players over the years. SCC has also played host to many memorable tournaments and once again, spectators will be privileged to witness exciting cricket in the SCC T20, an event that has grown in stature since it was first played in 2009.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome all players and officials to the 5th SCC International Twenty20 Tournament to be held at the Padang and Singapore Indian Association on the 11th to 13th August 2017. This year’ s tournament is perfectly timed as we celebrate SCC’ s 165th anniversary.

No doubt the players will strive hard and use every skill in their armoury to emerge victorious but this will also be the occasion to build relationships. All in all, when the final ball is bowled, there cannot be any losers; the champions will seize the crown but all players would have obtained their due reward in having enjoyed the inimitable Padang atmosphere against a unique backdrop.

We have secured a quality line-up of eight teams from Melbourne Cricket Club (Australia), SCG XI (Australia), Kowloon Cricket Club (Hong Kong), defending champions Madras Cricket Club (India), Sinhalese Sports Club (Sri Lanka), Rowlin Cricket Academy (South Africa), Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) and Singapore Emerging Stars. Apart from the suite of international players that will be playing in the tournament, we are delighted to include two former test players to join our SCC team – Muttiah Muralitharan and Ed Cowan.

Sher Baljit Singh Johal President Singapore Cricket Club

Putting together this tournament involved a lot of hard work and dedication. The Organising Committee deserves a round of applause for creating this unique experience for all. I thank each and every one from the SCC General Committee, the Cricket Section, SCC members, volunteers and not forgetting the continued support and generosity from our Sponsors for embracing the spirit of cricket. Without your support, this event would not have been possible.

On behalf of Singapore Cricket Association, I wish all players an enjoyable outing and am sure they will take back pleasant memories, both on and off thepitch.

Mahmood Gaznavi

President Singapore Cricket Association I am delighted to welcome our participating teams, esteemed guests, sponsors, Club Members and the general public to our 5th SCC International Twenty20 Tournament. Since its inception in 2009, this event has continued to evolve into what we, at SCC, believe is the best tournament of its kind in Asia. What makes it unique is the coming together of clubs with long cricketing traditions from around the globe. The cricket is always of the highest quality and the camaraderie amongst the players is very special. I am particularly looking forward to rekindling the many friendships that have developed over the years. It is these friendships that will live in the memory long after the actual exploits on the field may have been forgotten.

I wish all participants, supporters and volunteers a very enjoyable and fun-filled weekend of cricket and may the best team win!

On behalf of the 2017 SCC T20 organizing committee, it gives me immense pleasure to welcome you all to the 5th International Twenty20 Cricket Tournament. As one of SE Asia’ s premier club, we are proud to bring to you an action packed weekend of cricket. Although this is primarily a reciprocal club tournament, we selectively opened the participation this year in order to raise the profile and to promote Singapore as a hub for international cricket. This year, we have (8) participating teams, from 6 nations, which include Australia, India, Hong Kong, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the Singapore.

This year we welcome the world record holding test wicket taker, Muttiah Murilitharan to the tournament and to the SCC team in particular. We look forward to seeing him weave his magic on the Padang turf. Television coverage will again be a part of the tournament, with Eleven Sports putting together daily highlights packages and the semis and final being live streamed on Facebook on Sunday. I would also like to welcome and thank our many sponsors and partners, without whom our tournament would not happen. A thank you needs to go to Club Management (the Sports Department in particular), for their hard work in helping to make the tournament a success and of course to our President, Sher Baljit Singh and his General Committee.

Fundraising has been extremely challenging, thus we had to work twice as hard and be creative in our approach and value proposition. To sign Muttiah Muralitharan, the legendary Sri Lankan world record holder as one of SCC’ s (first ever) marquee along with Australian stylish opening batsman Ed Cowan have been significant milestones for us. We’ ve also introduced a few ‘ first time ever’ attractions at the T20, in addition to our strategic collaborations and heartfelt thanks to all our valuable sponsors, partners, volunteers and advertisers.

Pushpendra Sharma Chairman SCC T20 Committee

To be appointed as the Chairman of this coveted tournament has been a humbling experience for me. I have had the pleasure to lead a group of passionate, tireless members who despite having demanding day jobs have selflessly contributed towards the T20. I would like to extend my gratitude to Sher Baljit Singh (Club President), Zoher Motiwalla (Dy. President), Matthew Streeton (Chairman Games Control Board), Hugh Darwell (Cricket Convenor) and Dene Border (Captain of Cricket) for their support. Special thanks to the ex-T20 2014 Chairman Unmish Parthasarathi for his encouragement and guidance. Also, the T20 would not have been possible without the help of my rock-star committee members (Sukanti Sen, Ajay Aggarwal, Joe Windscheffel, Vikas Shenoy, Matt Boardman and David Wright). Kudos to SCC’ s (sports, f&b, membership, marketing & communications) departments in particular Thipa Mogan, Wendy Foo and Ricky Anderson for their support and to groundsman Rashid and his team for preparing a world class wicket. Lastly, “The goal is not to live forever, the goal is to create something that will”

Hugh Darwell

SCC Convenor of Cricket

This tournament is one of the four major sporting events at SCC that take place every year and the support of the other sports sections and their convenors is always greatly appreciated. We always owe a huge amount of gratitude to the organising committee who have worked tirelessly to ensure that we put on a world class event at the Padang. Sometimes we don’t appreciate just how many hours these individuals put in on a voluntary basis, for the love of the club and the game. It is not possible to name everyone, but I would like to say a special thank you to our Tournament Chairman, his core committee, to Ashok Mahtani, and his company, UFL who are again sponsoring the tournament and providing the competing teams’ playing kit. Thank you also to those who supported the sponsorship efforts without which the tournament would not be possible. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Singapore Cricket Club. Please enjoy our hospitality and a wonderful three days of cricket.

I hope that the legacy of SCC’s T20 Cricket Tournament will live forever.... The Singapore Cricket Club is an institution steeped in history, 165 years and counting. It is internationally renowned and has played host to many touring teams over the years, both amateur and professional. Our Padang field itself is also full of history, both in terms of the cricket played upon it and also more generally its significance to Singapore. And so it is a deep honour every time we step out onto our hallowed turf as players and as the current custodians of the SCC legacy. The colonial elegance of the club and the Civic District surrounded by the towering skyscrapers of the modern metropolis add to the sense of wonder – it really is one of the more unique settings for our sport in the world.

From being the brainchild of the late SCC President, Mike Grice, and humble beginnings, the fifth instalment of SCC’s T20 tournament is destined to be the best yet. The competitive bar is raised by the presence of more cricketers with Test and One Day International experience. Two new teams are welcomed - Sydney Cricket Ground XI and Singapore Emerging Stars XI. Old friends return - Rowlin Cricket Academy (South Africa), Melbourne CC (Australia) and Kowloon CC (Hong Kong). In addition, we welcome back previous winners Sinhalese CC (Sri Lanka) and Madras CC (India) whose squads are full of cricketers with international and/or IPL experience.

But the chance to uphold the traditions of such a great establishment and play in this wonderful location is just part of the reason why the members love the club. Truly the club offers opportunity beyond what can be expected at most cricket clubs around the globe. The SCC International T20 tournament is one such example. A relative new comer on the calendar having started in 2009, it has already gained plaudits as one of the best sporting competitions in the region and it isn’t a stretch to argue that this tournament showcases some of the best standard of cricket outside of the professional arena.

The T20 tournament represents everything that SCC stands for - cricket, camaraderie, competition, sportsmanship. Whilst the players get to entertain, we shouldn’t forget this tournament only happens due to a number of members giving up their free time and investing much hard work. To the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Push Sharma, and his team, very many thanks indeed. This includes the SCC staff and grounds staff, umpires and scorers - appreciated by all.

Matthew Streeton

Chairman Games Control Board

Lastly, tournaments need sponsors and we have many to thank for their kind contributions this year. Let the games begin.

And so our membership is abuzz with this latest instalment having waited three years since the last. Push Sharma and his Organising Committee have gone above and beyond and this promises to be the biggest iteration of the SCC T20 yet. The players are excited about the calibre of opposition and the rest of our fraternity are busy volunteering for jobs big and small, from the youngest Junior Member to the oldest of our social brigade, to ensure the success of the weekend. I hope the enthusiasm and pride we show for our own tournament will be evident to all our guests and look forward to a very enjoyable weekend of cricket, both on and off the field.

Cricket was played on the Padang as early as 1837, only 18 years after Sir Stamford Raffles founded the settlement of Singapore in 1819, but it was not until 1852 that the first meetings were called to discuss the formal establishment of a cricket club. There have been no fewer than three clubhouse buildings on the Padang, the first erected some time in the 1860s, the second in 1877. The third pavilion, which forms the core of the present clubhouse building, was built in 1884. It was extended in 1907, and the northern and southern wings that we see today were added in 1922. Between 1959 and the early 1970s, numerous cricket teams of Test or first class standard visited Singapore and graced the Padang. The most notable of these were:

and Alvin Kallicharran. The Sri Lankan team included a young Sanath Jayasuirya, who gave us a glimpse of what was to come. He obviously took a liking to the Padang and in 1996 on the same ground, scored the then fastest ever ODI hundred, in 48 balls against Pakistan. Cricket has continued to grow in popularity in Singapore and today, SCC fields seven league and one social team, with approximately 150 active cricketers in the club. Touring is also at the heart of the Club, with section and team tours becoming regular fixtures on the cricketing calendar. Interports to our reciprocal clubs around the region such as the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Penang Sports Club, Royal Selangor Club, Hong Kong Cricket Club and Kowloon Cricket Club, are still integral to our season. The club also highly valued relationships with key clubs in the UK, Australia, India, and beyond. SCC are currently preparing for a highly anticipated tour to India later in 2017 where we look forward to competing against a number of these clubs and the section continues to work hard to nurture these important relationships. We see the SCC International Twenty20 Tournament as a key instrument to further develop these friendships. The SCC community is excited to welcome all visiting teams and spectators to the 2017 International T20 tournament. A warm welcome also to the three guest marquee players who will be donning the yellow an black and representing SCC this year; Ed Cowan, Farveez Maharoof and the great Muttiah Muralitharan. The 2017 tournament is sure to be special addition to the long history of the club.

TOUR TALK – SCC INDIA TOUR 2017

We head into couple of exciting months for the SCC cricket section. Straight off the back of the International T20 tournament in August and following few nervous last league fixtures for the 2017 season, the club is gearing up for a major tour to India. On the 29th September we will embark to India for a 9 day tour which will be the first major outing since Sri Lanka in February 2016 and follows the hugely successful England tour of 2013. We will be travelling to 3 major cities Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai for what will prove a unique opportunity to play at 3 popular test venues where we will be hosted for 2 games each by Cricket Club of India (Brabourne Stadium), Karnataka State Cricket Association (M Chinnaswamy Stadium) and Madras Cricket Club (MA Chidambaram Stadium).

10 | SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

These tours have always been much more than cricket, it is a chance to build further bonds amongst the club members in what will be a social, but highly competitive week of cricket. More importantly its about building and developing our friendships with our reciprocal and connected clubs and we’d like to thank all involved for making this tour happen. Particular thanks goes to SCC tour organisers Vikas Shenoy and Aditya Bhargava for all their hard work behind the scenes.

VISITING TEAM PROFILES KOWLOON CRICKET CLUB Cricket is recorded to have been played in Hong Kong as far back as 1851 with The Kowloon Cricket Club coming into existence 4th October 1904, playing its first game on 15th October 1904 at Happy Valley. Alonside Cricket, Hockey, Lawn Bowls and Tennis have also been played at the club since its early years. The club boasts arguably the best ground and facilities for cricket in Hong Kong. Surrounded by the bustling skyrises of Jordan and once voted into a poll of the world’s most picturesque cricket grounds, KCC is the home to the Hong Kong International Cricket Sixes tournament. KCC regularly hosts international cricket matches and visiting squads from overseas.

The club currently enters five senior teams into the domestic competitions, three aligned to the Saturday championship and two to the stronger Sunday championship. Additionally, the club runs an expansive junior programme which provides cricket to hundreds of children of varying age and ability, every seasonal week. KCC enters multiple squads into all domestic junior competitions, the age brackets stretching from under 11 cricket up to under 17 cricket. The KCC Maiden’s also compete in the domestic women’s competition.

MADRAS CRICKET CLUB Sports, A Way of Life “Cricket was his religion and the Madras Cricket Club was his Church”– this was what that was said when illustrious and eminent Sir Alexander Arbuthnot founded this institution in 1846. For nearly a century, the club remained an exclusive preserve of the Europeans. The MCC played a perfect role in promoting and developing not only cricket but also hockey, tennis and squash. From the earliest days, the MCC maintained the Chepauk cricket ground and organised all representative cricket, playing host to national and international teams. The MCC has also conducted prestigious all-India tournaments in hockey, tennis and squash. At the club level, hockey and cricket matches attracted maximum participation and were played with great enthusiasm and fairness. In fact, many members had achieved a great degree of proficiency in more than one game. Over the years, the MCC has produced champion sportsmen across various disciplines and brought great laurels to the club and the country. Changing

12 | SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

with the times and adapting itself to modernity without compromising its culture and value systems, the MCC today is a beehive of sports activity and continues to produce sportspersons who have excelled both at the national and international arena. The club organises inter-club tournaments in Chennai. These tournaments attract the best of talents and games are fought with great intensity. The club also invites and organises home and away international friendlies with the Royal Selangor Club, the Singapore Cricket Club and the Irish Cricket Club, to name a few. To many of its members, the MCC is a second home, a place to unwind after a stressful days’ work, a place to get a good game, have a good workout at the gym or a nice, cool swim; but above all, let one’s hair down with their preferred choice of beverage in a very cordial and friendly ambience.

VISITING TEAM PROFILES MELBOURNE CRICKET CLUB The Melbourne Cricket Club was founded on 15 November 1838 when five men – Frederick Powlett, Robert Russell, George B. Smyth and brothers Andrew and Charles Mundy – agreed to form a cricket club to be known as the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC). As a pioneer club, the MCC’s early role was administrative and promotional, as well as competitive. The MCC was most prominent in developing the colony’s cricket and played a major role in guiding the game’s destiny until the then Victorian Cricket Association (now Cricket Victoria) took over the reins in 1906. The club sponsored four Australian teams to England and eight visits to Australia between 1886 and 1905. The MCC has been synonymous with success, measured in numerous premierships, club championships and state and national representatives. In its long and prestigious history, the MCC has been home to many fine players who wore the baggy green cap; Fred “Demon” Spofforth, Jack Blackham, Warwick Armstrong, Bert Ironmonger, Hugh Trumble, Vernon Ransford, Bill Ponsford, Keith Rigg, Colin McDonald, Lindsay Kline, Paul Sheahan, Max Walker, Dean Jones and, more recently, Brad Hodge and Andrew McDonald.

In all, there have been 41 players who have played Test cricket during their time at Melbourne. The MCC Foundation’s charter includes a commitment to fostering the development of cricket both within Australia and internationally, particularly in neighbouring regions. The club participates in regular international tours and values its relationship with reciprocal clubs highly. The MCC always has been the foremost promoter of sport in Australia. In 1859 the MCC drew up the first set of rules for Victorian (later Australian) football. It hosted the first tour by an English cricket team in 1862, the first Test match in 1877 and the first one-day international match in 1971. Along with the playing of cricket, today’s MCC is an umbrella organisation for several thousand participants in 12 sporting sections and takes the public role of managing and developing one of the country’s greatest assets – The Melbourne Cricket Ground, the club’s location since 1853.

CLEMENT “CLEM” CULL Clement Patrick Cull joined the Singapore Cricket Club in 2010 and quickly became a popular member of the club. Prior to being diagnosed with cancer in his mouth in 2012, Clem dominated the hapless batsmen in 5th grade for the Pumas, and then captained his beloved Panthers in the 3rd Grade Competition where it is safe to say that his troops played the most fun and competitive cricket of their careers.

Always one to put the collective before the individual, Clem was known for his pre-match gee-ups as the troops gathered round. The gee-up often involved a war anecdote about trenches, Germans or Panzers. The essential themes were: no matter what position the team was in, we could win, and don’t do anything ridiculous. Cricket is a funny game like that. Clem was always competitive and determined for everyone to do their best, and he led by example. Often needed to bat despite batting at XI, he would mutter something about the top order, shake his head, put on his gloves and stride out to try and see out the last five overs to bring respectability, or score the winning runs.

A great clubman, a great family man and a great mate to many. Clem will be sorely missed but never forgotten by all those who knew him and his legacy lives on. -Duncan Bond and Nick Howden An upright action opening bowler who wobbled the ball prodigiously, Clem had exclusive, downwind access to the new ball in any team he captained. Clem’s bowling resembled that of a metronome and leg cutters were usually too good for 3rd graders to get near. If a batsman slashed and caught the edge, these invariably sailed untouched through the slips which made Clem extremely economical but unlucky in the wickets column. After a tight 3 over spell, Clem would park himself at short cover, always short cover and not cover, and put up a hand for the sweeper as drives went past him. On occasion, if he felt inclined, he would sometimes put in a dive after the ball had gone past. Short cover also afforded Clem the prime position to let the umpires know about their performance, which he did within the confines of the game, quite regularly. Any on field debates were always left on the field and Clem enjoyed the after match as much as anyone, especially fine sessions up at Stumps or at Fortress Dempsey. In his time with the Singapore Cricket Club Clem was instrumental in the development of the club’s juniors, introducing a mentor program through the grades. 26 | SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

This initiative has lead to many boys developing into men, whilst becoming quality cricketers and leaders of the cricket club. Clem also started the Black Stumps CC, a team of expat kiwis, in Singapore after success in London. Many kiwi lads in Singapore have played the SCC Saturday XI over the years in entertaining and competitive games, which more often than not come down to the last over, wicket or run. Catching and top order collapses have been common but somehow usually the Stumps battle back from the depths. The Stumps are keen to continue the cricketing legacy in Singapore and NZ. Clem is survived by his loving wife Amy and his two beautiful children Annabel “Boo” (4) and Daniel (1). As a tightknit family they faced the past 4 years of ups and downs always together as Clem fought his battle. He was the happiest person in the world when Annabel was born, and then a few years later against the odds, Daniel arrived. Clem spent a lot of time with both, dropping Annabel off to pre-school and taking Daniel for walks. He was supported by mother Hillary, mother in law Suniver, younger sisters and extended family who were up in Singapore often. SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20 | 27

SCC YOUTH CRICKET DEVELOPMENT Singapore Cricket Club is the only club in Singapore with a dedicated youth programme. We start from as young as 5 with soft ball training and aim to prepare boys (and girls) for adult cricket, equipping them skills wise but crucially also providing plenty of opportunity to play. We currently have 80 boys in the youth set up and 6-10 of our recent graduates from the programme (all 17 and under) are playing regular league cricket for the club as Junior Sports Members. We have been fortunate to have very qualified individuals running the CYD programme. The current Head of CYD is Andrew Williams. Coaching is provided by Head Coach, Ricky Anderson and national player Arun Vijayan, while we encourage our older CYD players to help with coaching our youngest group at Dempsey. Not only do they receive quality coaching and development, juniors who are enrolled are eligible to play in various age group tournaments, where we enter teams, and in friendlies we organise at both The Padang and Dempsey. This means our players get the opportunity to play on the Padang from an early age, something they will hopefully cherish.

Those who join the CYD programme also have the opportunity, by invitation, to join SCC as a Junior Sports Member (JSM) at a very reasonable cost. This allows them to use the facilities of the club and represent SCC in adult league cricket. SCC fields teams in Divisions 1-5 and juniors are encouraged to play as soon as they are ready – some as young as 14 years old are already playing regularly. Playing with and against experienced cricketers only helps them develop and mature more quickly. JSM’s are also encouraged to tour with SCC In the past five years, tours have included South Africa, Australia and UK, as well as a number in the region. Another highlight of the CYD programme are coaching clinics with some of the legends of the game, wherever the opportunity arises. In recent years our up and coming young cricketers were fortunate to have a coaching sessions followed by some Q&A with both Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar. SCC also had the privilege of hosting Sachin in 2009. Also in 2016 England’s Darren Gough and Matt Prior shared their experiences on The Padang. And in 2012, the juniors were fortunate to have a clinic with Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan, followed by a lengthy Q&A session. Having Muttiah conduct another session around the 2017 T20 will no doubt prove very popular. We look forward to the current group of junior players representing SCC at the highest levels of the game and being stalwarts of the club in future.

SCC WELCOMES BACK ‘MURALI’

AD

FEATURE

To put it in context, previously the most accomplished player to represent Singapore Cricket Club was former Indian Captain GS Ramchand, who led India to their first ever Test victory over Australia in 1959. In 33 Tests he averaged a little less than 25 with the bat and a little more that 45 with the ball. When Murali dons the SCC yellow, he will undoubtedly become the greatest player to do so. With 800 Test wickets, 534 ODI wickets and 179 wickets at a miserly economy rate of 6.38 in T20’s around the world, his experience will add to a host side that is attempting to win the tournament for the first time.

It starts with a gentle jog to the crease. The right hand gripping the ball fiercely before coming together with the left. Both hands then disappear behind the head and with the eyes of an assassin sizing up his target, a fierce push through the crease delivers an off-spin delivery at revolutions previously unseen in cricket. It’s the familiar bowling action of the world’s highest ever Test wicket taker, Muttiah Muralitharan.

“I won’t be the same player I was the last time (in 1996) that’s for sure!” “It’s not going to be easy as a lot of these teams are bringing professional players, it’s going to be hard for the SCC, but I’m looking forward to it.” “Helping young players is the most important thing for me right now. Hopefully I can add something and help the younger guys in the team get better.”

It’s an action that announced itself on the world stage in 1992, helped Sri Lanka claim its first World Cup in 1996 and sent no less than 800 Test batsmen on the long walk back to the pavilion. After his international retirement in 2011, ‘Murali’ has been scaling back his playing appearances and when he suits up for Singapore Cricket Club at the SCC T20, it could very well be the last time the forty-five year old does so in a competitive match.

Helping young players is the most important thing for me right now. Hopefully I can add something and help the younger guys in the team get better. “I’ve played (at Singapore Cricket Club) once before a long time ago, in the 96’ tournament (Singer Cup),” he recalls. “I have known (SCC) for a while and they wanted me to come.” “I’ve enjoyed being retired and it’s only really coaching that I’ve been doing lately.” “When they asked me I wasn’t so keen to play, maybe just coach and help.” “I haven’t played for a year or more, but I thought about it and thought I would come and play and see how I do.”

30 | SCC INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20

For fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the world’s greatest off-spinner one last time, the Padang will certainly allow them to get close to the action, the short boundaries at either end being something Murali still recalls from his 1996 appearance. “It was a good series.” “Jayasuriaya scored the fastest ever ODI fifty and then hundred at the time and we made it to the final only to lose to Pakistan” “Maybe the short boundaries might make the tournament all about scoring runs more than taking wickets, but that’s ok, it should be fun to watch.”
