I A. MICHAEL GRICE President Singapore Cricket Club

t gives me great pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to all teams, officials and supporters to the 6th SCC International Soccer 6s Tournament 2014. The Soccer 6s Tournament is one of the biggest tournaments at SCC which sees the very best of high profile teams from around the Asia Pacific region in Singapore to showcase their talents. Following the success of 2013, I am sure that this year will continue to see the tournament grow and develop to even greater heights. I would like also to extend a very warm welcome to ex-Arsenal legend, Ray Parlour, back to the Padang for this year’s tournament as well as to ex-Scotland and Manchester United star, Alan Brazil, both of whom will turn out for the CLA All-Star Team in the Masters Cup. As the Premier Sports and Social Club in

t has always been a pleasure of mine to welcome all participating teams and spectators on behalf of the Football Association of Singapore, to the Singapore Cricket Club Soccer 6s Tournament. The tournament is into its sixth year and it will be held on 17 and 18 May once again at the historic Padang. The Singapore Cricket Club has held several events with the objective of developing the youth soccer talent in Singapore and the Football Association of Singapore has always been a great supporter

the region, the SCC continues to promote sports in Singapore and at the same time, provide an opportunity for youths to nurture their talents. This is prominent with the participation of youth teams from around the region to compete in this year’s Youth Tournament. I would like to thank the Organising Committee, under the leadership of Owen Monaghan for their tremendous commitment this year, the SCC Sports Department for spearheading the logistics, and, of course, all our partners and sponsors who have all, in one way or another, contributed to the 2014 Tournament. And to all spectators and supporters, come down to the Padang to enjoy the weekend’s action on the Padang. May the participants have fun and may the best team win.

of the development. I salute these big-hearted clubs, from the region, for heeding the call of the organiser, to do their part for youth development by doling out non-stop football action. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Singapore Cricket Club for organising this football event and I would also like to wish all participating teams the best of luck and hope that you have an enjoyable and fulfilling weekend, and special thanks to all the fans for doing their part and coming down to cheer the teams on.

I T. RAVI CHANDRAN Chairman, Games Control Board Singapore Cricket Club

t is with great pleasure that I welcome all the participating teams to the 6th Singapore Cricket Club International Soccer Sixes Tournament. This represents the highlight of the Soccer Section’s annual fixtures and is the second in a series of several annual international sports fixtures at the SCC. I am convinced that it will be an exciting weekend filled with competitive and yet friendly matches that demonstrates the sporting camaraderie that is so much a part of our Club’s tradition and culture. It is showcased at the famous Padang, which is integral to the history of Singapore as its independence was declared here by our first Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, on 9 August 1965. I believe you will enjoy high quality soccer action from teams around the world over this weekend. This year’s edition will be held over two days and will have three categories – Open, Youth (U-14), and Masters (Over 35). The Youth Tournament is a key feature that will help encourage and promote our young budding footballers. The Open category will have the best teams from Singapore pit their skills against international teams from all across the region. The Masters category

Celebrity Profile

Alan Brazil Club Career

Alan Brazil (born 15 June 1959 in Simshill, Glasgow, Scotland) started his career in England with Ipswich Town in 1977, where he stayed until 1983. He was a key player by the 1980-81 season, when Ipswich won the UEFA Cup and finished runners-up in the league. Ipswich finished runners-up once more the following season, when Brazil scored 22 goals, making him the second-highest scorer in the First Division. One of his finest games in an Ipswich shirt came on 16 February 1982, when he scored all of their goals in a 5–2 league win over Southampton. Brazil moved to Tottenham Hotspur in March 1983, scoring six out of 10 appearances. In June 1984 Brazil joined Manchester United and stayed for two seasons. Brazil left British football in 1988 to join Wollongong City (now the South Coast Wolves. He returned to Europe to spend his final season (1988–89) with FC Baden of the Swiss Challenge League, the country’s second division, before his playing career ended due to the serious back injury that had plagued him for seasons.

International Career

Brazil made 13 appearances for Scotland, the most notable of which saw him playing in the World Cup finals in Spain. He was the youngest member of the Scotland squad at the finals. His last full international came on 1 June 1983 in a 2–0 Home Championship defeat to England. He scored once for the Scottish national side, in his penultimate appearance on 28 May 1983 in a 2–0 Home Championship win over Wales. Extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/

Ray Parlour Raymond “Ray” Parlour (born 7 March 1973 in Barking, London, UK), is an ex-English footballer. He spent his career playing for Arsenal, Middlesbrough and Hull City. During his Arsenal career he was nicknamed “The Romford Pelé”; although the nickname was given with an ironic sense of humour, on account of his solid performance but unglamorous image. He has been described as an “unsung hero” and praised as a “fans’ favourite” for his high-energy performances. He is now a pundit on television, as well as on radio stations BBC Radio 5 Live and Talksport.

Club Career

Parlour is most famous for his time at Arsenal, where he played for 14 years. He joined Arsenal as a trainee in 1989, and made his debut for the Gunners against

Liverpool on 29 January 1992. He did, however, make 12 appearances for the England U21 team during this time and has also represented England as a full International. Extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/

Steering United from 25 Years of Mediocrity

W

hen David Moyes took over at Manchester United, he was ‘the chosen one’. Hand picked as he had been by the incumbent Sir Alex Ferguson, he was in nationality, background and demeanor a mini-me version of his predecessor. In making their selection, as they had undoubtedly earned the right to do, United laughed in the face of contemporary thinking about managerial recruitment. No aging proven winners for them (think Scolari, Hiddink or Capello), no young guns looking to revolutionise the game (Guardiola, Martinez or Rogers) no academiclooking foreigners (Wenger, Houllier or Magath), nor even former players who already knew the club and had tasted its glory (Giggs, Robson or Solskjaer). The obvious choice for some had been biding his time, waiting for Ferguson to retire. Taking every opportunity to ingratiate himself with the fans, owners and particularly with Ferguson, Jose Mourinho waited. Using the press brilliantly to state his case for him, he spoke publicly time and again of his boredom at Real Madrid and proved time and again that he was an irresistible winning force. English football fans and media alike, though loathed to admit it, had missed him and were yearning for the Special One’s return. Various accounts had Mourinho incredulous and in tears when Moyes was appointed at Old Trafford. All that was left was for the Portuguese to become the ‘happy’ one at Stamford Bridge, an appointment made, without mere coincidence after United had publicised their decision. Moyes had struggled for years to guide Everton to a Premier League season where they would finish above United. In his first season at Old Trafford he finally achieved it. By United’s extraordinary modern-day standards, the 2013/14 season has been an unmitigated

8

6TH SCC INTERNATIONAL SOCCER 6s TOURNAMENT

disaster. Their only moderate success being to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League, outdoing other British clubs, with the ironic exception of Mourinho’s Chelsea. Prior to his recent sacking, United fans were polarised on Moyes’ future. But a vociferous (airborne) section was also very clear in their assessment that he should go and as quickly as possible. But if Mourinho was the right answer for United in mid-2013, perhaps Moyes is still the answer for them in mid-2014. United has failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League; they have a plethora of aging or mediocre players that need clearing out; and a sizeable number of world class players who need recruiting. These three problems are interlinked. No Champions League football means there is no big-stage carrot to dangle in front of the world’s best players when they make their way home after the World Cup in Brazil. Furthermore, no Champions League money means that the heavily-leveraged club won’t necessarily have the funds to acquire those players even if they want to come. This all means that fixing the club’s woes could take longer than a year. The worst-case but quite possible scenario, is that United might now spiral into a Liverpool-like 25-year decline. Having no money and no Champions League isn’t something Mourinho has had to cope with for quite a while. His ability to work with cash and prominence is his strength. The ‘small-club’ problems that United face now is the situation Moyes has excelled in. Keeping the Scot at the helm seems, for the first time in months, might well have been the sensible call. Either that or hire Roberto Martinez. — SD.

Sing When You’re Winning

F

ootball fans are amusing. That’s always been one of the best reasons to go to a game. Social media brings their mirth to an even wider audience these days. Last season Steven Gerrard hosted a Twitter chat where questions were submitted under the hashtag #AskStevieG. Trawling the questions submitted, predictably found far more non-Liverpool fans looking to have a dig, than Merseyside reds curious to find out what the Liverpool captain’s favourite food is. Chief among them, perhaps: “Is there ever enough room in the carpark at Melwood, after Jonjo Shelvey has parked his spaceship?” Shelvey, who has since moved to Swansea, does have an appearance that somewhat resembles an alien. Unluckily for him, everyone’s noticed. But the core humour still comes from behind the goal. Hull City’s proposed name change to Hull Tigers has brought about understandable ire from supporters over the past year. In days gone by, the clash between a new chairman’s ego and the club’s passionate fan base might have exploded into violent protests in and around the ground. Instead, good humour won the day. The first response from ticket holders was clear and to the point: City till I die, City till I die. I know I am, I’m sure I am, I’m City till I die. The new owner, Assem Allam, who’s lived in the area for nearly 50 years, then showed an aching lack of

understanding for English football culture, dismissively telling the press that the singing protesters could die any time they wished. At the next home game, television viewers heard the masses’ response, garnering the kind of global sympathy and support that no protest could ever have done: We’ll die when we want. We’ll die when we wa-a-ant. We’re Hull City, we’ll die when we want. Most football chants exist to glorify the supported and devalue the opposition. A fine example of the former is admittedly old school but its revival is well worthy of note. Manchester United sing this one to Marouane Fellaini, but I imagine Chelsea have been serenading their Brazilian centre back with it for slightly longer. To the tune of I Love You Baby: David Luiz, you are the love of my life, David Luiz I’d let you sh*g my wife. David Luiz, we want curly hair too. Finally travelling Aston Villa supporters, while out singing the Manchester United fans at Old Trafford, raised awareness of the situation to the tune of? Is this a library? Is this a library? Is this a library? Is this a library? There was no audible response.

Youth Tournament

I

nspired by Henrik Lorenz, an old and dear friend of SCC, who founded the Youth Football Home in Phuket, the first team to take part in the SCC Soccer 6s Youth Tournament, the Club is delighted to continue his legacy by hosting five teams in 2014. This year sees the return of last year’s winners, Phnom Penh Crown Club and finalists, Youth Football Home (Phuket), together with Bali Sports Foundation and Rumah Faith (Malaysia). Most of these children come from underprivileged

backgrounds and many have never travelled beyond their own villages, let alone abroad, so it will indeed be an experience of a lifetime. The Organising Committee extends its sincere thanks to the General Committee of the Club, the Soccer Section Members and the tournament sponsors plus the families of the Club Members and friends who will be looking after the children during the weekend for their generosity without which none of this would be possible.

BALI SPORTS FOUNDATION Indonesia The Bali Sports Foundation (BSF) aims to improve the lives of children with disabilities in Bali and East Indonesia by using the power of sport and play for development, health and peace. Winner of two editions of the SCC Soccer 6s Youth Tournament, in reflecting its focus on sports for persons with disabilities, BSF will be sending a team of boys who are deaf and speech impaired with the aim to show that through sports, those living with a disability can demonstrate their strengths and not be categorised and stigmatised because of it. In this regard, sports can be seen as a stepping stone for those living with disabilities (and their families) to move from isolation in a karmic society like Bali, into mainstream society, and also educate those who do not have a disability to understand that those that do have rights that include being able to fully participate in

society and not face discrimination. BSF firmly believes that sports has the power to change lives for the better, particularly for those living with a disability.

RUMAH FAITH Malaysia Rumah Faith is a home for orphans and underprivileged children which started in 1985 in Kajang by Rev. and Mrs. Terrence and Kamala Sinnadurai with two children and a budget of RM 800 (USD267.00). Today Rumah Faith which is also known by its registered name Desa Amal Jireh is occupying a 4.2 acre piece of land in Sememhiy, Selangor. The Home which is now taking care of 120 children and 15 destitute senior citizens operates their own home school with 30 children at a monthly budget of RM100,000 (USD 33,000). The Home plans to buy another one acre piece of land next to their present property to build a Sports and Skills Centre, which will house a soccer field, a futsal

Youth Tournament PHONM PENH CROWN CLUB Cambodia

The Academy of Cambodia’s most successful club, Phnom Penh Crown Club, started in February 2011 after nationwide trials in 17 provinces uncovered the best 22 young players, aged 13 and under. They became the first intake at the club’s full-time residential academy, the first of its kind in the country. The senior team have won the Cambodian League title on four occasions and were runners-up in the AFC Presidents Cup in 2011. The Academy team have taken over their mantle at junior level in Cambodia, winning almost every domestic competition they have entered since their formation. In their first year, they returned from a six-match visit to the SCC Soccer 6s Youth Tournament in June with a creditable third place. Crown also hosted and won the inaugural First State Gold Investment Cup which was televised live on national TV. July 2012 saw the Academy return to take part in the SCC Soccer 6s, however, losing out in the final on penalty kicks. In May 2013, the youngest Academy players appeared in the SCC Soccer 6s tournament for the third time and with seven wins in as many games, scoring 25 goals and conceding none, they returned home with the Cup. The team was also featured in the very first FAMFrenz U-15 Asean Champions Trophy which involved teams from all 11 Asean countries. This was a great

opportunity for the youngsters to test themselves against the best of the region’s young hopefuls and despite finishing in sixth place in their group, the Academy gained invaluable experience from their participation. In July 2013, the Academy expanded to 32 players with the arrival of 10 new faces, all aged 12 and 13 years old. Each of the Academy players has represented the Cambodian National Team at different age levels and 2013 saw them triumph as the Cambodia Youth League champions, winning both U-15 and U-17 age categories. 2014 will see them return to Singapore to defend their SCC Soccer 6s trophy as well as join the revamped Asia U-16 Champions Trophy in May with an opening match in China

YOUTH FOOTBALL HOME Thailand Youth Football Home (Phuket) Foundation is a registered charity in Thailand. Our aim is to establish a loving home for orphaned and destitute boys. The boys receive comprehensive education at good local schools. They also enjoy daily coaching and training from fully qualified coaches in the game of football. The Youth Football Home is built on eight rai of land in the town of Thalang (about 150 metres from Wat Muang Komaraphat) on Phuket Island consisting of a dormitory home for 32 boys, a residential building for staff and a full size football field plus training areas. Construction began in October 2005 where the dormitory and staff house were built and furnished by the beginning of May 2006. The football field and the training areas were formed four months later. The first group of 9 boys from Bangkok and the Northern Provinces arrived at our Home on 11 May 2006, and were enrolled at the Thalangwittaya School in time to attend the first day of the new school year. Today we have an almost full house with many of the boys selected from football camps held on our grounds.

Youth Football Home has a full complement of qualified staff to look after the children. Under the supervision of a Thai Lady Guardian as Wardress, the staff includes two nannies, a cook, as well as cleaning, security and ground personnel. We have a qualified football coach from Europe as the sports manager who looks after the boys’ training and development in football. In addition, British and German ex-International footballers are periodically visiting the Youth Football Home and conducting coaching sessions with our boys.
