CLUB NEWS
Dear Members,
Before I embark on my bi-monthly communication to all members, I have a couple of items to touch on and I seek your indulgence in doing so. Prior to the recent Annual General Meeting held at the Club, unfortunately an anonymous e-mail was circulated to some members making veiled and unsubstantiated innuendo directed at senior officials and committee members of the Club. I have been asked by some members why the Club and I did not respond to this e-mail. That’s pretty easy to answer – the email wasn’t addressed to me or to other members of the then General Committee and, secondly, as it was anonymous we did not know at that time who it came from – therefore who could I have responded to? Let me make this clear so there is no ambiguity or misunderstanding – anonymous e-mails count for nothing and will be ignored by GC members and I, and treated for what they are worth – nothing. We are investigating and making progress in uncovering the identity of the sender. When we do, we will consider what action we may take. A. Michael Grice President Singapore Cricket Club
I would also like to take this opportunity, in view of a couple of things that have arisen recently, to remind all members that we are a multi-cultural and international Club with members of different cultural backgrounds, coming from different countries, with different beliefs – but who are drawn together under the umbrella of the SCC by our common love of sport, of friendship, of socialising and love of the Club. It is incumbent on us, as gentlemen and ladies of the Club to respect all members regardless of their background or nationality. There is no room at the Club for bigotry or prejudice. When we walk through the front door of the Club we are all SCC members. CLUB DEVELOPMENT Now, to other matters. First - Club Development. We have appointed consultants to guide the Steering Committee chaired by Matthew Streeton who will oversee the planned and approved development work of the Club scheduled to begin later in the year. I will keep members abreast of our progress. There will be some disruption once work commences but we will endeavour to minimise inconvenience to members as much as possible. JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT On the Junior Development front, we are intending to create a separate GC portfolio to oversee the enhancement of our future membership profile. It will be headed by Richard Stapley-Oh and will cover all aspects of Junior Development with the purpose of having a clear and common policy parallel to the existing one. The portfolio will have a clear pathway to encourage and develop our juniors, through sport, to becoming full and active adult members of our Club over time. SCC NIGHT RACE FIESTA The SCC Night Race Fiesta will be held from 19 – 21 September. Three-day passes to the event, along with child tickets, sold out within a day of their sales launch so if you wish to be placed on the waitlist for tickets, or enquire as to what may still be available, please e-mail racetickets@scc.org.sg. Details are available on www.sccnightrace.com. SOCIAL EVENTS The SCC Wine and Cheese Party will be held in August in conjunction with National Day. Over 60 labels of wines accompanied by a sumptuous array of foods and cheeses will be available. Members and their guests are invited to dress in their best reds and whites. Join our celebration of Singapore’s 49th National Day at the SCC Hawker Fare (only one year to go to the big one – the 50th!). The National Day Parade will be screened live at the Main Lounge where a special beer promotion will be available for your enjoyment. SCC will host a ‘Kampong Night’ this August in conjunction with the upcoming festivities of Hari Raya Puasa. May I take this early opportunity to extend festive greetings to all our Malay members on this important occasion – Selamat Hari Raya Puasa! Our female members can enjoy an opportunity to pamper themselves (or rather, their nails) at the Sally Hansen Alluring Nails Workshop on 19 July. Details available on page 20.

SPORTS The 6th SCC International Soccer Sixes Tournament held on a weekend in May delivered entertaining football. The event was graced by Scotland’s Alan Brazil (who now has his morning radio show in Britain called ’talkSPORT’ with a regular listening audience of 3.5 million) and England’s Ray Parlour (former Arsenal stalwart, once known as “the Romford Pele”, making his second visit to SCC). I’d like to thank the Soccer Section and the Organising Committee, led by the evergreen Owen Monaghan, for a resoundingly successful weekend of soccer action. A nice curtain raiser to the 2014 World Cup! The SCC Annual Sports Awards Night honoured its successful sportsmen and sportswomen of the year, as well as its leading top teams in May. Tireless efforts and tremendous enthusiasm goes into our Sports Sections and Sports Teams, so this, for me, is a very special occasion. My heartiest congratulations to the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, Andre de Lange (Cricket) and Mary Lim (Bowls) respectively, and to all other individual and team winners (refer to page 26 for the full listing of award winners). Club members keen on participating in the SCC Annual Golf Tournament on 19 August should approach the Sports Department to register and secure your places early (full details on page 24). The SCC International Twenty20 Tournament to be held from 22-24 August will witness our top reciprocal Clubs delivering a full weekend of power hitting, skilful bowling and dynamic fielding in an attempt to win this prestigious tournament. And not forgetting, our crown jewel, the SCC Annual International Rugby Sevens Tournament (30 October – 2 November) to be held later this year. Mark the dates in your diary – it’s not to be missed! That’s it for this issue. See you at the Club – where our Food & Beverage outlets and bars await you with “a gastronomic symphony of epicurean delights” as well as your favourite tipples to wash it all down! Enjoy!

National Day at the Padang Article by: Kevin Cumbers y first memories of Singapore were of the National M Day Parade in the year 2000. My family and I moved to Singapore in July that year and we were staying at the Fairmont Hotel. From that vantage point we could see all the preparations that went into the biggest celebration that would take this nation into the next millennium. Still intrigued by what I saw, I decided to explore the area around the Padang and quickly got the sense that Singapore’s National Day belonged right here at the Padang. It was a rare sight – Look up and you will see an ultramodern city skyline with competing skyscrapers; typical of any modern growing city. Looking around me, I saw open playing fields flanked by the former Supreme Court and the historic City Hall with the Singapore Cricket Club, of course, standing majestically in the midst of these fine Singapore landmarks. The old and new seemed to have interwoven to meet at the heart of Singapore - the Padang. I have since been lucky enough to enjoy the parades as a member of the SCC. At the Club, you could not help but notice all the activities and rehearsals in the run-up to the big day. It was like a carnival right up to the very week before with first-hand experience of performances minus the thousands of spectators. It seemed to make the club come alive as I noticed that a few of our elder statesmen members seemed to have a little spring in their step in the months of July and August. I was later surprised to find out that the National Day Parade was not always held at the Padang. With the passing years and the increasing number of proud Singaporeans wishing to be part of the celebrations, it grew from the original six military contingents to one big spectacle which resulted in the parade being organised at bigger venues like the old National Stadium and The Float at Marina Bay.

The National Day Parade is not only a celebration but also one that invokes a certain pride on Singapore’s special day. Some members may moan and gripe when our beloved Padang was used for other events but for National Day, we seem to moan a little less. Even the cricketers who see loads of cement poured over their sacred grounds are rather quiet. After all, the SCC is akin to Singapore’s history. National Day at the Padang gives the Club a special ceremonial spirit. When the National Anthem is played and as we watch the flypast and hear the booming of the 21-gun salute, we realise we are all playing a part in this wonderful story of Singapore. While we look forward to this year’s celebration at The Float at Marina Bay, deep down inside we are all waiting for next year when we celebrate our 50th Birthday. More importantly, the National Day Parade will be coming home to the Padang and close to the Grand Old SCC sitting majestically in the midst of it all, still looking all stately and proud and a worthy landmark in the history and heritage of Singapore.

Lantana Shiraz Cabernet 2013 Mildura
A pleasant bouquet with red fruit and subtle hints of pepper. It shows warm generous fruit with ripe plum and berry fruits, all balanced by a silky palate and fine-grained tannins. An easy drinking red that has enough body without being too tannic. $42.00 per bottle | $9.00 per glass
Misha’s Vineyard The High Note Pinot Noir
Mouton Cadet Vintage Edition 2011 Bordeaux
Ruby in colour, this Pinot Noir has inviting aromas of blackberry and red summer fruits, violets and vanilla, and a little dark chocolate with hints of exotic spice. A powerful and focussed palate exudes warmth and depth with the dense sweet fruit supported by fine silken tannins.
A glittering and particularly intense purple, shading to black. The elegant and complex nose combines aromas of red fruit (redcurrant and cherry), black fruit (bilberry, blackcurrant), spice (saffron, vanilla) and toasted notes. The attack is full and stylish and very round, while the powerful mid-palate displays fruit flavours and opulent, very elegant tannins, building to a vibrant finish on rich and pure oaked notes.
$78.00 per bottle | $15.00 per glass
$52.00 per bottle | $11.50 per glass
Allegrini Soave DOC 2013, Medium-intense straw yellow in colour. The nose reveals distinct notes of white flowers followed by fresher jasmine flowers and a crisp and delicate citrus vein. Striking for its decisiveness, medium body and feistiness, expressed through its fresh palate. $50.00 per bottle | $11.00 per glass
Allegrini Valpolicella Classico DOC 2013 Ruby red in colour, with purplish-blue highlights; the nose exhibits fragrant fruit with prominent notes of cherries, echoed by fresher hints of pepper and aromatic herbs, typical of Corvina and Corvinone, the historic varietals of this appellation. Whilst young it is impressively lively and playful on the palate whereas some two years on it expresses greater delicacy and finesse. $55.00 per bottle | $12.00 per glass July / August 2014

Annual Intersection Darts Bull’s Eye 7 June 2014
Annual Darts Bull’s Eye Tournament was held on 7 ThadheJune 2014 and it certainly was a remarkable event as we 11 Sections participating in the Tournament. The GC
was represented by 2 teams and the other sections were Netball, Cricket, Hockey, Golf, Squash, Billiards & Snooker, Soccer, Bridge, Lawn Bowls, Balut, and Darts. The day kicked off with the bursting of blue balloons on the darts board by our President, Mr A. Michael Grice, Chairman Games Control Board, Mr Ravi Chandran and GC Members Ms Joyce Foster and Mr Parasuram Krishnan. Blue was the favourite colour of the late former president, Mr Len Foster, who had donated the trophy and so the tradition continues. The dart game of choice for the event was 301. The first round was contested by all teams with the top six teams advancing to the second round where they were seeded into two groups. The top team in each group advanced to the final on : Soccer Secti round. During each Winning Team round a number of singles and doubles matches were played. While the teams played their first and second rounds they were provided with snacks such as ‘Gado Gado’ (Asian salad) and sandwiches. All teams were then hosted to a sumptuous buffet dinner. Thanks to Mr Rajan Menon and Pernod Ricard for their sponsorship of whisky and fine wines which were enjoyed during dinner. GCB Chairman Mr Ravi Chandran and Ms Joyce Foster presented the medals and the Bull’s Eye Trophy to both finalists and the Soccer Section respectively. We truly enjoyed the day of fun and laughter as it ended with a song from John of the Soccer Section. My heartfelt thanks to Chairman Games Control Board, Mr Ravi Chandran for supporting and encouraging most of the sections took part in this event.
I would also like to thank Mr Nigel Stearns, Mr Daljeet Singh, Ms Chovin Ong, Ms Becky Xu and Mr K.C Tan and his team for providing a great service to our members.
Congratulations to the winners! 1st Soccer Section 2nd Darts Section 3rd Cricket Section 4th Hockey Section
Not forgetting my Darts Exco team: Captain Philip Ng, V-Captain Jeroen Goldman, Ms Soma Devi, Ms Shelia Nagiah and Mr Mohan Balagopal - thank you for your efforts, presence and contributions in making this event a success.

ingapore Cricket Club’s 13 Sports Sections were out in full force on Friday, 9 May 2014 in celebration of the 7th SCC Annual Sports Awards Night. The awards ceremony which was held at the Padang Restaurant aimed to recognise and honour outstanding sporting achievements of deserving Sections and individuals who have proven their mettle throughout the year. The event officially commenced with a welcome speech by SCC President, A. Michael Grice, who conveyed his hearty congratulations to all 13 Sports Sections and urged them to be the best they can be as they venture forth in pursuit of sporting excellence and exemplary sportsmanship. In a similar vein, Chairman Games Control Board, Mr T. Ravi Chandran, too, expressed his appreciation for the tireless efforts of our sportsmen and sportswomen. He hopes for SCC to be “the crown jewel in the international sporting scene” through the combined efforts of all Sports Sections. One of the highlights of the awards ceremony this year was the brand new Sports Initiative of the Year award presented to the Sports Section most active in organising and promoting their activities throughout the sporting calendar as well as encouraging member participation in programmes. The Netball Section was the proud recipient of this award. The evening culminated on a high note with the Cricket Section receiving the highly sought after ‘Section of the Year’ award and the Rugby Section winning ‘Team of the Year’ award. Rousing applause and cheers were heard around the room as the teams accepted their awards and were congratulated by their fellow comrades. Buzzing with camaraderie, members and guests adjourned to the Gilmour Terrace for a scenic celebratory dinner under the indigo sky. ‘The Lost Box’, a three-piece live band entertained our celebrants, belting out radio favourites that prompted many to take to the dance floor capping off the night in high spirits.

In the Youth category, the talented team from Cambodia, Phnom Penh Crown FC, beat Thai team Youth Football Home 2-0 in the final to emerge as champions. The other teams competing were Bali Sports Foundation and Muhammadiyah, who represented themselves very well indeed. It was greatly humbling to see the Bali Sports Foundation team, who were all hearing impaired, playing on an even keel with the rest of the youth teams. A big thank you to Rodney Holt for making that happen this year. SCC’s finest at the Melbourne Bowling Club (Not in picture : Zoher)
Bowled Out by El Nino
49th Australian Turf Bowlers Carnival, Melbourne 6-11 April 2014 Our team of 15 bowlers was in Melbourne for the Carnival. They prepared diligently over a month of practice sessions at Tanglin Club for a tough battle ahead on the faster Australian Greens. Not surprisingly, the friendly match with the Melbourne Cricket Club on the first day saw SCC winning only 3 matches/1 Draw in a total of 8.The Tatts matches that followed proved just as tough. Of the 15 games played over a day and half, SCC won 4/drew 2 with most of the other games with close results. Sadly, we had no opportunity to catch up in the remaining 12 games - wiped out by torrential rains in the lead up to the Category 4 storm “ita”, sweeping down south from the Northern Territories. Our Tatts hosts were as always, most hospitable. The President of World Bowls, Mr J Aarons personally declared open the 2014 carnival. The 50th Tatts anniversary carnival will be hosted in Bendigo, Victoria 12-17 April 2015 and promises to be a grand affair. Friendly Match with Tanglin Club Our friends from the Tanglin Club were our guests at SCC for the annual friendly match on 10 May followed by a pleasant dinner and drinks under the stars in the courtyard. It was a friendly game and indeed a number of SCC players also bowled for the Tanglin teams.

nother interesting and busy month has gone by for the Bridge Section. The Inter-Club Friendly with Geylang West Bridge Club held on 7 April 2014 had an air of camaraderie. There were about nine tables for this event. Players enjoyed tasty finger food (in particular, the mushroom quiche and samosas) and delectable wine, not to mention the challenges of the game. The best pair among the players from the Geylang West Bridge Club was acknowledged with a prize. The customary Easter Special Event was held on 24 April with more than six tables. The spread of both vegetarian and nonvegetarian dishes was a treat for the palate, as was the free flow of wine. Local favourites such as Laksa, Satay, Gado Gado, Mee Goreng and Tahu Goreng were savoured by all. The next special bridge event is planned for 14 August 2014 in conjunction with National Day.

The Committee continues to have plans for the future. For a start, there are plans to purchase ten sets of playing and bidding cards to replace the current over-used ones. An overseas social game with the ‘Royal Selangor Club’ is still in the pipeline. Awards are also being planned for ‘Best Partnership’ and ‘Best Player’ of the year. The Beginners Training Session resulted in two new Members joining the Bridge Section. Members have also been participating in the Inter-Section games at Singapore Cricket Club. Two teams will be participating in the games organised by the Darts Section. New kid on the block, the Bridge Section, has been making sure and steady progress with its many plans and activities.

th SCC International Twenty20 Tournament (22-24 August) The premier international cricket club tournament in Asia will soon be coming back to the Padang. The eight competing teams are as follows: Melbourne Cricket Club, Singhalese Sports Club, Cricket Club of India, Madras Cricket Club, Hong Kong Cricket Club, Rowlin Cricket Academy, Singapore Cricket Club and Singapore Cricket Association. There promises to be some fantastic cricket, so please come down and support our signature cricket tournament.
Saturday XI (by Hugh Darwell) The Saturday XI has had a mixed start to the season, winning 4 games, losing 7 (2 of which were lost on the final ball) and having 2 games washed out. All games have been played in the true spirit of Saturday XI cricket, with some outstanding performances. Mike “Bish” Byfield with 267 runs including 3 fifties at an average of 89 and a strike rate of 160 leads the way, closely followed by Rohit “Happy Hooker” Shah with 201 runs (3 fifties) at an average of 50.25 and Ash Raivadera with 165 runs (1 fifty) at an average of 82.5. Andy Beer has played 2 games for us, compiling a fifty on both occasions. On the bowling front, the outstanding performance of the year to date came from Matt Streeton with figures of 6-24 in our first game of the year. Our most consistent bowler has been KK Natarajan with 10 wickets at an average of 10.5 and an economy rate of 4.38. Simon Bird, with an economy rate of 3.9 has been the most parsimonious of our bowlers. Fielding has had its highlights and lowlights. Martin Seabright with 15 victims, including 13 stumpings has been on fire with the gloves. Dropped catches continue to plague our season, having put down an average of 3.5 per game.
Women’s Cricket (by Annemarie Tanke) National women’s cricket captain G.K. Diviya made history last season when she played for SCC Cougars, becoming the first woman to play in Singapore Cricket Association’s Division Two. Much of this remarkable feat was the result of Diviya’s own talent and hard work, but SCC showed it was willing to break with convention and that it would select players on merit, regardless of gender. Even though women’s cricket is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide and there is even talk of an IPL-like event for women within the next 12 months, women’s cricket in Singapore hasn’t really taken off yet. There is a small group of committed and passionate players that train at SCA every week, including Jaguars captain Sukanti Sen’s daughter Tanya, but opportunities to play and improve outside of the SCA nets have been limited…until recently. Thanks to a number of very supportive and enthusiastic people at the SCC, including Trevor Larbey, Hugh Darwell and Sukanti Sen, some of Diviya’s national team-mates are now actually getting some actual game time. The scheduled “Home vs Home” games have been opened up to the SCA girls and since the end of last year, they have now had 4 games against, and with some proper and seasoned players. The amount of excited and enthusiastic Whatsapp messages that get sent before and after these games really is unbelievable. Thanks to the SCC these girls now get a real opportunity to get better at the sport they love, and maybe, one day follow in Diviya’s footsteps and play for SCC in the men’s league. So from all the SCA girls I would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to the SCC for being as inclusive, supportive and welcoming as you are. It really is much appreciated. May you make history for a long time to come! Junior Cricket The highlight of the junior cricket season so far took place in early June, where 15 of our up and coming young cricketers were fortunate to have a coaching session followed by some Q&A with legend Sachin Tendulkar. This opportunity came about through RBS, for whom Sachin is a brand ambassador. SCC also had the privilege of hosting Sachin in 2009.

SCC vs AHC
23 May 2014 was a very special day as SCC Darts Section was invited to the Australian High Commission (AHC) for this annual fixture. It was a day out for the Darts Section Members and we had a mini bus ferrying 13 of us safely to Napier Road. We were warmly welcomed by Mr Andrew Everitt, responsible for sports and social activities at the AHC; and all his colleagues, friends and loved ones. A strong turnout of about 40 darters from both sides gathered at the AHC that evening. AHC staff was pleasantly surprised to hear of the long history between both teams, as well as the darts matches played by us. The competition (6 Singles and 6 Doubles) began. Both teams were well-matched and the final score for Singles was SCC–4, AHC-2. Doubles was won by SCC– 4, AHC– 2. This year there was a slight tweak in the game format - we played 301 but the highest score wins. Join the Darts Section to find out more about how it is played! It was a great social evening enjoyed by all.
Convenor Fathima planning game strategy!
I would like to thank our GC Member, Ms Cynthia Elizabeth Robless, who is also our Darts Section Member for her immense support to the Section. This event would not have been possible without much support from the SCC Section Darters and the AHC staff. They were awesome and they put up a good fight to win the Cup! Thank you Andrew (AHC) for making it possible! I would like to thank the following Section Darters: GC Member, Cynthia Elizabeth Robless, Balagopal, Philip Ng, Gavin Latto, Soma Devi, Rachna Anand, Shelia Nagiah, Jagdeep Padda Singh, Kirenjit Kaur Gill, Champa Lachman Murjani, Yasmin Gaffoor and Mohan Balagopal. They were competitive and made every effort in clinching the Title. The Section also recognises our supporter, Alisha Tara Krishnan. AHC and SCC will endeavour to continue this fixture and we are looking forward to inviting them over to the SCC next year.
Happy winners!

Springing into Summer with a Busy Season
O
n the eve of Vesak Day, the Ang Moh Cup made a welcome return to the Padang. This time it was to say farewell to two well-known faces - Laura Trythall and Tim Peach.
The two sides - yellow kitted ‘Ang-Moh’s’ and the white striped ‘Locals’, all managed to escape work early for this very important match-up and played some skilful hockey on the perfectly manicured lawn. The winners won, the losers lost but the score wasn’t important – it was great to have the men and women mixing on the pitch and the mixers flowing in Stumps thereafter. The Cup was presented to Laura and Tim over drinks and dinner during which both shared a speech and shed a few tears while reminiscing the years spent with us at the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC). We are sorry to see them go and wish them every success in their next adventures. We are sure this won’t be the last we see of them – especially Trythall, as her parents now live in sunny Singapore! Big thanks to Sean for organising such a fun evening! Many of us are hoping for more social hockey events on the Padang soon. Congratulations go to our very own Rosalind Spink who was recognised at SCC’s recent Annual Sports Awards Night with the ‘Spirit of Sport’ accolade for the Hockey Section. Geer Langezaal ably collected on Roz’s behalf, as she was on a rescue mission in India!

SCC Men - Jakarta Tour
Meanwhile, the boys had been having fun in Jakarta. Here is what Toby Gresham had to say about the weekend jaunt: “We took two teams to the Jakarta ISCI 8-aside tournament on the weekend of 24 and 25 May for some competitive hockey and drinking. Both teams got stuck in on the Saturday but as the beer flowed the standard of hockey dropped and the 15-minute games dragged on.
Our 1st XI beat the local teams Kombinasi and DKI Jakarta playing a nice passing game before taking on a regular SCC nemesis in Hong Kong’s Valley HC. It proved a physical affair with both teams keen to maintain their unbeaten record and tempers flared. This made the victory that much sweeter as we emerged victorious courtesy of a Gerald drag flick in off the crossbar. All of this was forgotten in the post-match boat race against them (which we gracefully lost). Our 2nd XI with a blend of both youth and guile found the going a little harder kicking off with a 1-0 win over the Hurricanes. Their second game was against a youth side from Jakarta, Balikpapan, and their speed was a little too much, losing by 2. They closed out the day with a pleasing 1-0 win over the Hong Kong Football Club Pirates. The early start on Sunday was a wrench not helped by the compulsory viewing of the Heineken Cup and Champions League late into the night. The 1st XI dispatched the Hollandse Club and drew with the MAS Stewards whilst the 2nd XI lost two on the bounce to Prodigy and ISCI, our hosts, to a brace of goals in both. The 2nd XI narrowly missed out on the Quarters owing to a goal difference and the 1st XI progressed to the Quarters winning through 1-0 before running out of puff in the Semis 2-1. Thanks goes to the splendid hospitality and organisation of our hosts ISCI on guaranteeing another successful SCC Jakarta Tour. Thanks as always to Coach Kanan for his tireless work in getting us all through our respective seasons. Keep up-to-date with all our SCC Hockey News on Team Snap and our Facebook Page!

F
riendly League, ENL and Bangkok Tour The Singapore Cricket Club’s Friendly League came to a close in May, with all three of SCC’s teams putting on a respectable show against top competition. The Eagles finished third in Division 1, with a very strong Fier Orcas taking home the gold medal. The Hawks finished fourth in Division 2 which was won by the New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Kea team. Our mixed team, the SCC Falcons, ended in the league in third place behind Auxano and the NZCC Tui. The very successful league ended with a similarly successful party which was held in Stumps at the end of May. Nearly all teams showed up to celebrate, collect their trophies and enjoy the food and wine. June is looking to be an exciting month for the Section. The first week sees the kick-off of the Singapore Energizer Netball League (ENL) – the most important tournament of the section’s year and the biggest league run by Netball Singapore. The SCC has three teams competing: two ladies teams and a mixed team. The league is always stiff competition with the biggest and strongest clubs from across Singapore competing. Good luck to all the ladies participating in the tournament!
SCC’s Friendly League: The Hawks
The Eagles
The Section’s touring team, SCC Flamingos, faced a slightly different challenge in June – taking on the disturbances in Thailand to participate in the Southerners SE Asian Netball Tournament in Bangkok. With teams from across Southeast Asia – from Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Laos and Vietnam, the tournament is a great opportunity for the flamingos to ‘spread their wings’ and play in a fun but competitive tournament. The 10pm curfew may affect the ability (and the hangovers) of the ladies. Playing remains uncertain at the time of print. Sports Awards Night The Section would also like to offer our congratulations to Rachael Bell, who won the ‘Spirit of Netball’ award at the SCC Sports Awards Night, and to Nanthini Visvalingam for her hard work on the JSM programme which led to the Section winning ‘Sports Initiative of the Year’.

The calm after the storm. SCC Tourists and Las Vegas Blackjacks following SCCs gutsy 25-22 victory
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and San Francisco
A
t 4am on Friday 16 May, 21 Section Members began what was to become one of the best tours the Section has done. To Changi Airport and to the bar.
Two games awaited us, the first being the day after stepping off the plane against the Olympic Club: San Francisco’s SCC. On any tour the first match is challenging. The previous night’s revelry: AT&T park with refreshments, the Mexican bar more refreshments and whatever happened after that, took its toll on the boys as we attempted to get off the bus and walk 50 metres to the pitch. If changing into your rugby kit is challenging, it doesn’t really bode well for the game. So, suffice to say they were not as good as us, but we were really not us that afternoon. No matter, the boys at Olympic Club were great hosts, with a fantastic bar and clubhouse right out of the Great Gatsby. It was a great night, again. Sunday morning 9am and it was time for some culture. So we joined San Fran’s Annual Bay to Breakers Run, a 12km fancy dress run in which the boys really got stuck into the spirit, sights, sounds and smells. On Tuesday we were lucky enough to sample some of Sonoma’s finest Pinots and Chardonnays.

Wednesday was a road trip to Vegas and some much needed sleep. On Thursday night we met the Las Vegas Blackjacks, one of the best rugby teams in the US: 2010 USA Premier Division winners! This was one game where odds say you lose. But something happened in the cool desert air, the mood changed. From the rubble emerged the interminable SCC spirit and with it belief! It didn’t start well. From their kick off the ball was expertly guided into the hands of their rapid No. 11, who sliced through to score in the corner. 10 seconds gone, 7-0 Blackjacks. Laughter from their supporters and team was heard. Time to fight. Corey Dennis kicked off and our forwards piled into their line. The poor lad who caught the ball went straight to the deck spilt the ball after some willing rucking and outrageous playmaking by Rishi Chandiok down the short side and Alex Chew was over in the corner. Inside 1 minute SCC had hit back. The laughter stopped. It was a tough match. We dominated them in the lineout, where young hooker Ben Choy was outstanding, the scrum, with the superb front row rotation of Marc Lansonneur, Chris Reynolds and Rishi (a penalty try was awarded to get within one score) and breakdown, where all 23 put their bodies on the line. Their outside backs were electric, our boys did remarkably well to limit their scoring through courageous arguably suicidal (Mike MacNab/Paul Debourdeau/Mark Ngo) defence. It ended 2522 to the SCC with other tries from skipper Sam Flint and the winner from Harresh Krishnan. Big thanks to Rishi (among others) for organising. Fantastic tour!
Wine tasting in Sonoma. Not sure they’d seen too many Rugby tours before. Hibbledibble!

First Team Update
S
ixth consecutive win of the Cosmo League title which was secured with several games to go. It’s been a season of ups and downs which saw the season start unbeaten and playing very well up to the mid-season break (Christmas). After this period, injuries, people missing and complacency crept in and results were hard to get with other teams strengthening in the mid-season break. Owen “Alex Fergerson” Monaghan called up players from the Tigers team into the squad and starting lineup with the likes of Dom Lane, Duncan MacDougal, Tim Digby who played very well and earned immense respect from the first team squad.
13th SCC Football Fiesta 2014 (Breitling Plate SCC PADS 4 - 0 Singapore Football Coaches Association ) SCC Padantiques won the Breitling Plate by thrashing Singapore Football Coaches Assocition 4-0 during 13th SCC Football Fiesta 2014. We fielded a very strong squad, and played throughout with a very strong defence, controlling midfield and goal hungry strikers – every PAD did their job and more to ensure we won in style.
Steve Angleov and Ronnie Smollet deserve credit for great performances in goal and ensuring that SCC had solid foundations to get results.
The Strikers were outstanding in their efforts with Disco scoring two solo efforts and Huw the Master bagging another goal for good team work. Killer finished it all off with the fourth goal after taking 5 minutes to get the ball onto his favourite left foot before blasting it in off the goalkeepers nose, then the bar, then the post….quality! Jas’ contribution was to cover every piece of grass in the opposition half of the field, and set up chance after chance with his tireless efforts.
New players such as Felciain Dumas, Noato Iwasawa, Greg Walasek, Martin Rigby, Saeki Osmarua all came in to the first team this season to add freshness and ability into an already star studded first team squad and performed consistently well.
All in all a superb Squad effort made it a very memorable night. Everybody gave their all and the celebrations were complete when Sir Dirk Paulsen strolled up to present the prestigious trophy to the PADS Captain Glyn Vince.
The Cosmo League Cup Final the other major pinnacle of the season saw SCC play old foes Casuals. After a tough 90 minutes the score was 1-1 and play halted as there was no daylight. The winners of the cup are yet to be decided.

National League and Challenge Cup Wrap Up
T
he annual Singapore Squash Rackets Association National Squash League came to a conclusion in the 3rd week of May. Overall performance by the SCC teams was commendable. Altogether we bagged 3 league titles, one better than last year, as well as winning 4 Challenge Cup titles. We retained our Men’s Premier Grade title fairly convincingly, having not lost a match the entire season. Although SCC have been dominating the Premier grade for some time, this season turned out to be more challenging as some clubs added a number of strong players to their team rosters, helping to bolster the overall competitiveness of the league. Fortunately we have a good balance of youth and experience that helped us maintain a consistent standard through the course of the season. We underlined our credentials as league champions by comfortably winning the Challenge Cup which is contested among the top 4 finishers in the league.
and against a strong team. With the match score at 2-1 in our favour, our no 1 was up against a Malaysian national player who had beaten her comfortably earlier in the season. True grit and determination followed as our player worked her socks off to claim a memorable win, a win that not only secured the match but also the league title. With the league title under their belt, our ladies claimed the Challenge Cup rather more comfortably. Here again the team comprised entirely of JSMs. For the second year running, we narrowly missed out on the Men’s B Grade title. Last year we led for most of the season before surrendering the title in the very last match. This year we were behind a long way and despite a strong showing in the second half of the season, we did not quite get there. This was slightly unfortunate as we clearly had a title winning team. A combination of reasons saw us being unable to field a full team in quite a number of the matches. We did finally manage to demonstrate our true strength when we comfortably won the Challenge Cup, dropping only one tie each in the 2 matches played. Overall it was a good showing by our teams in the league in particular in securing the ladies title. Although we have fielded strong teams in the past, the title has always eluded us. An encouraging note is the fact that our juniors continue to deliver success year after year.
Meanwhile, an all-JSM team delivered the Men’s C grade title, closing out on the title even before the last few matches were played. The team comprised most of the players that won the E Grade title the year before. They also won the Challenge Cup without the loss of a single tie. This group of juniors have improved significantly in that time and were clearly a cut above the rest of the teams. They will be moving on to the B Grade next year and we expect great things from them. Somewhat unexpected was the Ladies Division One title which was delivered in the very last match of the season

‘Mini-Wimbledon’ abuzz with action On 24 May, the courts at SCC were abuzz with action as we hosted SANWA group - an association of Singapore-based Japanese tennis players. Many fingers (and toes) were crossed, hoping for good weather as much time was dedicated to organizing this social. On this day, 19 matches were played, and involved players mainly from the Men A, B and C teams as well as the Ladies A team. This social was timely as it served as a good warm-up ahead of the doubles tournament season. The first wave of matches on the grass and hard courts were mostly won by SCC but as the games went on, the friendly competition got tougher! Both sides fought to keep ahead of each other and spectators witnessed some spectacular tennis. Ong Wei Yao, our top junior boy displayed great match finesse and powerful serves. He partnered Kevin Cumbers and in another match, former Davis Cup player Kunal Pawa to win two matches against SANWA group. Baljit was also in good form, serving and volleying well, thanks to the fitness training from the weekly ‘Jog & Jug’ he says! SANWA’s players also demonstrated great form and consistency especially their top A doubles pair and kept SCC players on their toes throughout the afternoon and evening. At the end of the evening, the scores were tallied and SCC narrowly lost the social 9:10, but scores aside, it was a fun atmosphere of tennis at the courts SANWA nicknamed ‘Mini-Wimbledon’.

Chinese Swimming Club Invitational In early May, the SCC team was invited to play in the Chinese Swimming Club Invitational. The competition consisted of men’s and ladies’ veterans’ doubles, mixed doubles and men’s doubles. Held over the Labour Day weekend, the tournament gave SCC players a chance to experiment with new partnerships and the team eventually emerged runners-up. Thank you to all who played! Coming up: The Inter-club Doubles Knockout Tournament At the time of writing, the SCC tennis teams were gearing up for the first important doubles tournament of the season. The Men’s A and C teams will play in the Kliny Cup and the Chan Cup, while the ladies will compete in the Martha Young Cup, where they emerged runners-up for the last two years. The tournament will run from 22 June to 12 July 2014.
An afternoon of social games with SCC and SANWA
This is a yearly fixture in Singapore’s tennis calendar for many years, and one of our former Men’s Captain, ‘Uncle’ Choo Cheok Hai recalled the fierce battles and the gambles that paid off in the Inter-Club Doubles Knockout Tournament of 1984, 30 years ago. That year, SCC emerged the top club having won three of the four Cups it contested in - the Kliny (A), Chua (B) and the Martha Young Cup (Ladies A). Interestingly, that was the first year SCC fielded a ladies team and they won the Cup in this first appearance! The players who contributed to these wins include ‘Uncle’ Choo, Wilfred Lim, Albert Teo, John Choy, Lim Loo Liong, Ong Chin Chuan, Tan Poh Seng, Evelyn Lim and Yasmin Blumbach.
