EVENTS
PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE On behalf of the General Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Members who had taken time to participate in the Club’s Annual General Meeting held on 25 April 2017. I am most honoured and humbled to be the President of the ‘Grand Dame’. I hope I shall be able to fulfil the aspirations of the Members of the Club for which I would require the support of all my fellow Members. I will work diligently on your behalf to help address challenges, and to secure lasting and meaningful improvements to our Club. This is a responsibility that will not be taken lightly, and I will endeavour to perform my best with utmost transparency. During the next one year as President, my focus for the Club will be these three main objectives:(1) Increase membership visitation to the club; (2) Enhance membership experience; and (3) Increase revenue. The Committee along with Management will work together to achieve progress on these three priorities. We aim to take the wine culture at the club to a whole new level. Besides being in the process of starting a “Wine Section”, we will also be introducing a ladies’ cocktail night. With these initiatives, we hope to enhance and increase membership visitation. Keeping our treasured values and traditions on the forefront, we are studying various projects to take on “rather than doing the same things differently, we will try new different things” so as to move our Club closer to exemplary status. Study Groups are being formed to work on these projects. Members will be kept informed of the initiatives as they progress. We have started a study group on cost control and review of purchasing policies. The Committee shall hope to identify areas of savings and improvement. I am pleased to report that an extension for Dempsey Field lease renewal is secured - six months until 28 February 2018. At the same time, we are in discussion with Singapore GP (F1) in the event that the F1 race continues beyond 2017. Ticket sales are open to Members for this year’s event; it is always a spectacular experience to be part of the Night Race from the Club’s privileged vantage point. As part of productivity improvements to reduce staff attending to errors made at point of sale at the outlets, Members are being requested to produce their membership cards when making first order. The card is swiped and the membership number is electronically registered in the system, this significantly helps in reducing errors when manually keying in the membership number. I thank Members for your support on this change. It is noted that many of our Members are not receiving the weekly E-Blasts. To ensure you keep in touch with events, promotions and messages, may I kindly request that your current email address with the Club is up-to-date. You may email membershipdept@scc.org.sg to update any changes of your personal particulars. Again, thank you for your support. In closing, my newly elected team and I thank you again for electing us and we pledge to continue to serve Members to the best of our ability. Dining chairs from the Padang Restaurant Following the replacement of carpet at the Padang Restaurant, the existing dining chairs will be replaced with new dining chairs of different colour scheme as part of our continuous efforts to improve the facilities. The chairs are comfortable, in fairly good condition and still usable. We have about 70 pieces for sale at a giveaway price as part of our recycling efforts to reduce the green house effect. The chairs are to be sold at just $5.00 each on a “cash and carry basis” as we do not have storage space.

Recent Events Look Who’s Cooking 13 May 2017
Members and guests had a taste of the Land of Smiles on 13 May as SCC’s very own ‘domestic goddess’, Sunita Kapoor, whipped up an exotic spread of Thai dishes at the Gilmour Room. Dishes ranged from fragrant pineapple rice to a crowd-pleasing Tom Yum Soup; all which were skilfully demonstrated by Sunita.

The level of football the teams played was very competitive yet very sporting way, making it pleasing to watch.
The SCC football community eagerly anticipates the annual arrival of the International Soccer Sixes due to its immense diversity of teams and friendships that has been formed over the last decade and beyond.
One moment that stood out was the amazing sportsmanship displayed by a young player from the German European School. He had been awarded a penalty (incorrectly by the referee) and made the decision to kick the ball away from the goal on purpose. This move gave the ball back to the opposition, the Phnom Penh Crown Club, Cambodia team.
Before I start with the write up I want to say a big thank you to the SCC Club staff who add so much value to this tournament with their tireless dedication and support. Other acknowledgments go to the SCC General Committee chaired by President Sher Baljit Singh, who is a massive supporter of the Soccer Sixes, and I thank him for that. The newly formed Soccer Section committee led by Convenor Jon Knapp for their support and finally to the section members, who contribute time and money to support the tournament. A sincere thank you from me. The tournament kicked off on Saturday morning with the most important aspect of why we do what we do for this tournament, and that is the organisation of the youth team competition with teams from around the region in a refreshingly revised format with a total of 8 teams: • Bali Sport Foundation, Indonesia • Phnom Penh Crown Club, Cambodia • Youth Football Home, Thailand • Singapore Cricket Club Soccer Academy, Singapore • Stamford International American School, Singapore • SG Active, Singapore • German European School, Singapore • Singapore Soccer Academy, Singapore With many teams from various countries, this brought many different cultures and background together on a common field.

Such an example of gracious sportsmanship from a young football player, who in my opinion makes a great role model for both young and old. The Finals saw Bali Sports Foundation narrowly beat SCC Soccer Academy through penalties in the Semi Finals. They then continued to take on Stamford International American School that had earlier beaten a resilient Phuket Football Home team in their semi final match. It was a closely contested match which saw Bali emerging as winners of this year’s 2017 Youth Cup. A thank you to all the families who hosted the youths throughout the weekend and welcoming them to their homes. The Open tournament saw 16 teams vying for the title with Yokohama CAC, Hong Kong FC and SCC Firsts producing great Day 1 performances and result. A special mention to Hong Kong FC and Tony Hamilton-Bram for bringing a touring party of 57 people which also included a women’s team who played vs. Deloitte Singapore in a exhibition match on the Saturday. Tokyo Panthers FC attending for their second year managed to defend their plate success from 2016 with a convincing win over the SCC Tigers. Within the Cup competition, the SCC Firsts emerged as Champions for only their second time in this tournament by

overcoming a strong and organised Hong Kong FC in an intense and exciting Finals that had everything to keep the spectators engaged with goals and controversies. Some notable teams performed well and deserve a special mention. Yokohama CAC - ably led by the SCC Soccer Sixes stalwart Joe Takeda. Avenue FC and Royal Selangor Club at the Masters Plate final with Avenue FC edging their opponent and winning the Plate trophy. The Masters Cup tournament was a very exciting competition and provided some quality football for the onlookers mainly coming from the CLA All Stars team, Hong Kong FC and SCC. The Masters Cup semi finals were played between Hong Kong FC and the SCC. SCC emerged narrow winners to set up a final with CLA All Stars that had coasted past Viking Singapore. They showed fantastic competitiveness throughout the weekend. The champions ended up being CLA All Stars as they beat a competitive SCC side by two goals to one. Man of the match for the CLA All Stars was Aleksandar Duric who ended up making the difference with his goal scoring and overall performance. The Legends tournament saw four teams; SCC, Eagle Boys, CLA and the Singapore Ex Internationals play in a mini round robin for the trophy. The Final was played between CLA and the Singapore Ex Internationals with the ex-stars coming out on top in an exciting game. The SCC Legends team, with household favourites of John Dykes and Graham Dickson, went on to win the plate final! My congratulations to all teams for participating and making the 2017 Soccer Sixes a success. BALUT SECTION 2017/8 AGM The ‘outgoing Committee’ was duly re-elected unopposed, officers installed as shown above. The AGM was well attended by nearly 40 members, including guests Zoher Motiwalla (Deputy President), Matt Streeton (Chairman Games Control Board) and Alan Jones (GM). Tony read out the Convenor’s report which showed the Section had an outstanding year. Special thanks were given to our sponsor Rajan Menon of Pernod-Ricard, who was also in attendance. The Treasurer’s report, given by Else, illustrated that the Section’s finances were healthy. Once the formalities were concluded, another excellent In-house event was held – preceded by a splendidly varied ‘makan’ which included chefserved roast lamb!

1ST 2017 INTER-CLUB LEAGUE TOURNAMENT Some 76 players from 19 teams participated in this year’s first League tournament which was hosted by the Singapore Recreation Club. We were delighted that SCC’s Team 4 (Jasmin, Cynthia, Soma & Anwar) achieved first place with a 3,438 points total, and that Anwar Gaffoor also took the individual honours with 669 points!

Tuesday, 18th April A large contingent of 36 players turned up for this event. Jasmin eased ahead of Anwar (641) with 643 points to take top prize. Rick Clements put in a sterling performance to gain 3rd place with 636 points. Adam Tybally came last with 509 points.

Saturday, 29th April Another great Saturday afternoon event saw 28 players in keen contention. Anwar bested Joyce Foster, amassing a total of 663 points to her 639 points. Hard at her heels though was Yeo Foo Yong with 636 points. Always keen to grab attention, Secretary John Taylor proudly secured 28th position and the “mini” Chivas!

TOURS Preparations are well in hand for the keenly anticipated trip to Bangkok on 21 to 24 July where 26 SCC Baluteers, plus one supporter, will vie for the honour of contesting the ‘TeamBalut Challenge 2017’ against the British Club. Additionally we are looking forward to battling in the 37th STC Chivas Regal Interport hosted by the Sarawak Club on 17th & 18th of November. Note: our next Saturday afternoon event will be held on 2nd August, and the Pot Games will be held at the SCC on Saturday, 9th September.

TATTS TURF BOWLERS CARNIVAL, 2-7 APRIL Notwithstanding the deluge of news reports on Cyclone Debbie and howling wind gusts with speeds of over 160mph pounding Australia’s northeast in late March, a motley band of 10 SCC Lawn Bowlers refused to be cowed and headed for Tweeds Heads on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia for the 52nd Annual Tattersalls Turf Bowlers Carnival. Whilst the storm was subsequently downgraded, the winds made their appearance daily, especially in the afternoon games at the Green. Our bowlers battled bravely against all the odds - playing on a much faster Green, combined with gusty winds which made it a struggle to keep our bowls in line at the best of times... Led by our Captain, Virginia Longfellow, our bowlers nonetheless stormed to victory in 9 sets, with 2 draws. Not a bad effort at all, given the difficult circumstances. Our 3 skips - Virginia, Rodger and Matthew deserve special mention for their great effort. The overall winner was City Tatts and Australia took the Purslow Trophy. Our hosts, Tweeds Heads Bowls Club and organizer, Perth Tattersalls Bowlers were as always most hospitable and the SCC team was led by Team Manager, Rodger Kimpton. The next round of these tournaments will be hosted by Sydney Tattersalls, 16-20 April 2018 in Terregal, NSW. (Scribe by Dr KU Menon)
SCC’s motely band of bowlers gathered for battle at Tweeds Heads
SCC SINGLES (MCKEAN CUP AND WA ROSE CUP) 17 bowlers signed up to vie for the McKean Cup this year. After the round-robin matches, we take on the action from the knockout stages. The first quarterfinal was between Hui Kai and Christian. Hui Kai was unable to replicate his standard of bowls in the round, allowing Christian to ease into the semi-finals. The quarterfinal between Zoher and Euan produced some brilliant drawing though the greater consistency showed by Euan allowed him to ease into the semi-finals. Menon produced a Houdini act in his quarterfinal, securing a 4 to win 21-20, in a see-sawing battle in which Mr. Chai seemingly had the upper hand. Melvin made a strong statement in his quarterfinal against Ganesh, obtaining many large numbers, including an upshot for 4 on the last end to secure his semi-final spot. The semi-final only featured 1 game, as Melvin won by a walkover against Christian. Euan played Menon in a repeat of last year’s semi-final. However, it was a case of deja vu, as Menon struggled to adapt to the rink after a short rain delay, which left Euan a path towards a finals rematch against Melvin. The finals on 22 April was held in gorgeous conditions, with Melvin racing to an early 6-0 lead and looking as though he would run away with the game. Euan produced much fighting spirit to claw his way back into the game, reaching the halfway point at 11-10 up. Although he held the lead by 1 shot, Melvin had won 7 of the 11 ends played up until that point, proving just how vital it was to reduce the damage when you

are down. Unfortunately for Melvin, it was also a sign of the almost unstoppable momentum that Euan had been able to generate throughout the whole event, not allowing Melvin to score again and defending his singles title with a 21-10 win. On the women’s side, the games on the last day proved to be exciting. Devi and Josephine fought it out in a long-drawn game which saw them tie at many points before Josephine ran away with it. Candy came back with a vengeance and put Ming Li back by one more game, leaving the game between Mary/Shermeen to decide the 2nd place between Mary/Ming Li/Amira. However, Shermeen gave Mary little chance in that showdown, producing a strong display of her arsenal of shots to jump from 2-2 to a 14-3 lead. It ended with a 21-10 win for Shermeen, finishing the event unbeaten, and a well-deserved victory for the defending champion.

NATIONAL PAIRS 2017 SCC bowlers took home the Silver and Bronze from the National Pairs held over March and April. In a repeat of last year’s final, Ganesh SR and Edmund Lin took the game to their opponents, leading 13-10 with three ends to go. However, a spirited fight back by Anthony and Thomas from ELBC saw them winning the finals eventually 18-13. Throughout the tournament, they claimed the scalps of many national bowlers, showing they are no pushovers. The other SCC pairing of Wong Hui Kai and Melvin Tan came in joint-third after they fell in the semi-finals.
Curtains closed in May for the Tanglin Pairs league. After 11 gruelling matches, the fight for the top honours went all the way to the last game. Going into the penultimate end, the two league leaders from ELBC were only two shots ahead and any slip-up means SCC 1 and SCC 2 could leapfrog them to the top two positions. However, both teams held their nerves to win narrowly to bring home the Gold and Silver Medals. The Bronze medal tussle was between both SCC teams. SCC 2 went into the last game with 37 points, with SCC 1 only two points behind. Both teams were expected to win their games with ease. However, their opponents had something else in mind, coming up with some spirited shot-making to make things difficult for our bowlers. SCC 1’s Melvin and Candy eventually succumbed when he missed his last bowl trail shot by millimetres, dropping the game by one shot, surrendering the bronze medal to SCC 2, who could only managed a draw against bottom team ELBC C. Heartiest congratulations to Tanglin Club for a well organised and successful tournament.
SCC’s star pairing of Chng Ming Li and Shermeen Lim brought much joy to the Section when they achieved top honours in the Women’s Pairs. Widely expected to win, they brushed their opponents away with ease, dropping only one game along the way. Silver also went to another SCC team comprising of Mary Lim, Amira Goh and Candy Lai. Heartiest congratulations to all winners.
FRIENDLY MATCH WITH TANGLIN CLUB SCC and Tanglin Club reaffirmed their wonderful friendship when we hosted a friendly match against them on 6th May. Forty bowlers turned up for the game and all six rinks were used. SCC came out eventual winners with 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. The game was followed by a wonderful dinner at the Courtyard where friendships were renewed and new ones were made.

EXPERIENCE AND EXPOSURE The Section has been focused on providing ample experience and exposure to its members by encouraging them to participate in tournaments, in addition to the regular games being played on Monday evenings. There was a special Easter Monday game on 17 April when snacks were provided and prizes awarded. Vouchers were given to four pairs. John Martens & Stephanie Hodges were declared the winners of the day. Two sets of players competed for the second place: King Fook Chan/Mike Sharples and Thurairaja Nagalingam/Sandra Iyer. Voucher for making a slam, a prize initiated for the first time, went to the guests from Geylang West: Dean Chew and Chiang Suat Hong. It was believed that giving prizes for slams would encourage players to be adventurous!
The Bridge Section would like to congratulate John Martens for receiving the Spirit of Sport award held on Saturday, 8th April 2017 at the Sports Awards Ceremony and SCC’s 165th Anniversary. The first part of beginners bridge training has been completed. The second part concluded end-May. The participants are keen to carry on. Some of them play amongst themselves on Monday evenings with the trainer Carl Parker guiding them in their play. The members look forward to more of such training, exposure and experience as they continue to hone their skills every Monday.
The 9th Kuching Bridge Congress was held from 29th April-1st May 2017. Three pairs participated in the event: Olivia Law/ Esther D’Silva, Chan King Fook/ Mike Sharples and Chitra Varaprasad/ Mr Purushothaman. The Welcome Lunch was held in the Main Hall at the Sarawak Club at 12.30 pm. Registration for the Pairs Event commenced from 1.30 pm on Saturday. The game should have started at 2pm, but got delayed. We had other teams from Singapore, Indonesia and Penang participating in the tournament. The camaraderie and the congenial atmosphere made it an enjoyable experience for all the participants. The team did not do so badly after all in the final overall scores for open pairs. Mention must be made of Mike and King Fook who scored more than 50%. The Premier Bridge League games have started. Two pairs took part in the games hosted by Tanglin Club on 14 May and by NUSS on 28 May respectively. They benefitted greatly from the experience. THE BUZZ FROM THE CRICKET SECTION The Cricket Section continued a forty-two year old tradition over the last weekend in May, heading to Kuala Lumpur for its annual interport with the Royal Selangor Club. The Saturday XI had a strong start in the first game of the weekend, looking to atone for a loss to the touring RSC side in 2016. Tom Corrie starred with the bat, striking 57 with contributions from Ajay Aggarwal (30), Harry Taylor (29) and Aditya Bhargava (28) to take the side to 217/8. Victory was looking likely for SCC before the rain gods decided to intervene resulting in the match to be drawn with RSC at 19/1 in 4 overs. The Sunday XI’s got underway with RSC out for revenge after a loss to SCC at the Padang in 2016. After losing the toss, skipper Jack Ledger was sent in to bat and SCC were put in a strong position with Riaz Hussien (59) and James Kilbee (74) both showing poise alongside controlled aggression through the middle overs. A late collapse however left the tourists just shy of par, all out for 195 on the last ball of the innings. In reply, despite some early hiccups the home side made short work of it on home turf and won the game easily. Our friendly rivalry on the field and brilliant camaraderie off it has further strengthened the relations between

the cricket sections of two historic clubs. The section takes immense pride to report that the two of our section members represented Singapore in the recently held ICC WCL Div 3 tournament in Uganda. Anish Param and Parag Dahiwal contributed heavily to the team’s success, taking Singapore to 23rd in the overall international rankings and the highest ranked team in South East Asia. The section also hosted the captain of Zimbabwe National team, Graeme Cremer and three other international players from Zimbabwe, Neville Madziva, Timo Mawoyo and Malcolm Waller at the club premises in April. This was specially arranged to continue our efforts to provide access and exposure to our JSMs to valuable inputs from professional cricketers. It was great to host the the visiting players and introduce them to the club’s rich heritage. Finally, our effort to get the SCC T20 is motoring along, with a total of eight confirmed teams. There will be two new teams this year: SCG and Singapore Emerging Stars XI. The committee is looking for volunteers for various roles too. The ‘young at heart” SCC Legends.
HK SOCCER SEVENS Citibank’s HKFC Soccer Sevens is one of the highlights of our Football Section’s year and the SCC have been regular attendees since its inception back in 1999. Competition is fierce, with teams from Aston Villa, Bayer Leverkusen, Leicester City, Olympique Marseille, Rangers, West Ham, and Japan’s Kashima Antlers, all vying with the SCC Firsts in the main league. The SCC was also ably represented by the Tigers in the very strong Master’s league. Despite finding themselves in the ‘Group of Death’ that contained previous champions Aston Villa as well as Bayer Leverkusen, the First gave a good showing, narrowing losing out to HKFA Red Dragons in the Main Plate Quarter-Finals 1-0. Similarly the Tigers found themselves amongst some very tough competition, particularly the Citi All Stars. Despite not progressing to the later stages, they did the Section proud with some good performances including an impressive 1-0 win over local favourites, USRC, courtesy of a well-taken, first-time finish by Adam Bowden.
SCC FIRSTS Fresh from winning the SCC Team of the Year Award for 2017, the SCC Firsts went on to win the Cosmo League with a game to spare, eventually amassing 61 points from 24 games, 8 more than second spot and scoring a thumping 101 goals in the process. Worth champions and hearty congratulations from all of us at the Club!
SCC STROLLERS The Strollers have begun their season strongly, currently 2nd in the Equatorial League and in the Quarter Finals of the Equatorial Cup.
SCC LIONS The Lions played their annual cup game against the Indian Association on 4th May, a match which turned out to be a thrilling encounter! With victory in sight, an unfortunate slip up in the dying minutes allowed the visitors to equalise at 3-3, a score line which was to remain unchanged until the final whistle. Honours even then this time around but hopes will be high for the Lions to take home the spoils when they visit the IA for next year’s fixtures.

It was a game that the Lions will perhaps rue as one that should have been won but remained a good overall effort from the team nonetheless. A special mention also to Piers Bourke who was voted man-ofthe-match for both driving the team forward throughout the 90 minutes as well as a brilliant 70-yard solo run and finish.
SCC TIGERS The Tigers ended last season’s ESPZEN Sunday League Division 1 in April, finishing runners up to the league champions by just two points. A fantastic achievement and a credit to all of the players and coaching staff involved! This season, the Tigers once again encouraged and received some excellent young players from the U’16s, enabling these up-and-coming talents to become accustomed to the more physically demanding conditions of the Men’s leagues, with some even progressing as far as receiving call-ups from the Firsts. The Football Section is rightly very proud of its youth structure and examples such as these are testament to the dedication and hard-work of everyone at the Club. With the start of the new season in Sunday’s Equatorial League, the Tigers have got off to a solid start.
SCC PADS The Pads have had a great start to the season with 8 clean sheets in 18 games. Notable highlights included a 2-0 win over the Brit Club, with Tommy ‘The Legend’ Smith getting in on the action with an assist for the crucial second goal. Thus far, 48 goals have been scored with 20 conceded and this year’s battle for the Golden Boot is already proving a twohorse race with leading scorers Amos and Yossi both on 9 each. A very good April and May culminated in an impressive victory under the lights against a strong UWC team to win the Luca Friendly Cup, 5-0. The event, an annual charity match, is a poignant one for the Pads and is in supports of a young boy, tragically injured in an accident which led to brain damage.

SCC attending Citibank’s HKFC Soccer Sevens in Hong Kong
SCC NFL The SCC NFL kick-started the month of May against the preseason favourites Balestier Khalsa, Yishun Sentek and SAFSA which featured some ex S-league players amongst their ranks. After an unlucky 3-0 loss against Balestier, which included an own goal and a very dubious penalty, the SCC NFL picked up against Yishun with a 3-2 win, having trailed 2-1 at half time. An under par performance saw the team lose to SAFSA 4-0. With the big teams now out of the way though, the lads will be looking to collect some welcome points in the upcoming games and maintaining their target of a top half finish.

And in a huge boost to the section, the SCC Football Legends (50s and above) has been re-established, with the ‘young at heart’ proving that they’ve still got a few tricks up their sleeve, winning their opening match against the Football Referees Association of Singapore ‘Legends’, 4-2. The SCC Legends aim to play two Monday matches a month and our thanks to Ravi Krishnan for putting this all together. GOLF ACTIVITIES Royal Selangor Club (RSC) visited us on the 21st April for an interport match at the Seletar Country Club. The whole week prior to that, it was raining heavily every afternoon, and we thought that the game would certainly be washed out. Fortunately, there was a heavy downpour in the early morning, and the sky cleared up for us in the afternoon. The RSC contingent probably had too much to enjoy in JB the night before, and their game showed. Of the 8 competitive match-play games played, we won more games than expected. It was the camaraderie we have with the KL boys that counted, and as usual the beers flowed after the game to celebrate that, before we adjourned back to the Gilmour for more drinks and dinner. The band, ‘Hearts & Souls’ entertained us for the evening. The RSC match was supposed to be followed by another interport game with Kluang Country Club on the 5th of May. Regrettably, Kluang had a scheduling problem and could not make the trip. Much as the cancellation was a disappointment, we turned the it into an intra-social game among our section members at the NSRCC Sanctuary course, followed by dinner at the nearby D’Kranji Resort.

15 golfers took off to Batam on the 12 – 14 May weekend for 3 rounds of golf, at Tering Bay and Palm Springs, a 27-hole resort course, where they had 2 games.

SCC Mens and Ladies 1s setting the pace in both National Leagues
THE SCC SMORGASBORD MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY! The Singapore Cricket Club in all its 165 years of existence has been a melting pot of people from all walks of life, cultures and geographical locations. This smorgasbord of sorts is well represented in our hockey teams where players from South Africa play alongside a boy from Pasir Ris. Everyone at the section have started to look upon the SCC as their own and this has created a bond that has been bearing fruit on both the competitive and social fronts. The SCC Men’s 1st team are on a 6-game winning run that has taken them 9-points clear at the top of the league but the two teams in the chasing pack have 2 games in hand each. The season thus far has been testing with player injuries, relocation and general non-availability of squad members. Drawing into the back-up goalkeeper and using as much as possible U21 players from the 2nd XI, they have coupled with their dedication and hard work reached a point the destiny of the title is well and truly in their hands. Although there are still 3 tough and close games to play the men can be proud of reacting to the circumstances presented and delivering their best regardless. The 5-2 win over one of two title rivals Old Rafflesian Association and then claiming massive 3-points against Tornados where our Lions were trailing 2-3 with 3 minutes to go. Captain Dan Laslett equalised with a shade less than 3 minutes to go and then vicecaptain Greg Reece despatched a rocket penalty corner drag flick to seal the match 4-3 at the death. This victory truly spurred the boys on and when the 2nd leg of the Padang Derby this season came along, a largely new look SRC team were blown away. Leading 4-0 at half time, our SCC heroes dug deep and produced a professional display in claiming a famous record 12-0 win over our arch Padang rivals. Albeit SRC are a new look outfit, the victory was sweet nonetheless. The ladies 1s are also in similar position. If they win their remaining 3 games and the title is theirs. A feat not easily achieved but the ladies have won 8 of their 9 matches and have a 11-point lead over Jansenites who have 3-games in hand. The ladies have worked awfully hard and are still doing so as they hope to claim their 5th National league title and 3rd in 6 years. Beating Jansenites 4-3 in a thriller in recent weeks has induced great amount of confidence to the girls who take in a weekly fitness session on Mondays alongside their Thursday training session at Evans Road.

Not to be outdone, our Ladies 2nd Xi squad have upset the form books and are amongst the medal contenders with one game to play. Although they need results to go their way, what they have achieved this season is remarkable and goes down to their dedicated attendances at training and recruitments of a couple of players from the 1st XI. The Men’s 2s who went through a rebuilding exercise this season are in the mix for a top 4 finish and if results go their way maybe even a bronze granted they win all their remaining games. With many players from our successful boys’ development programme playing for the 2s there is all likelihood that they do bag maximum from the rest of their games. A key feature of all these squads is that the team composition is well and truly mixed up between ages, nationalities, cultures and even jobs. Students and lawyers get along just as well as accountants and teachers. Keeping that in perspective, the monthly socials organised by the hockey section has been good quality affairs but of late they are drawing good quantity too. Both April’s and May’s monthly social events drew in the least 40 section members. The latest one held on 19 May saw yet again a good mix of players taking in an exciting game of hockey on the hallowed green of the Padang before settling in for local flavours and beverages at the courtyard. Seeing so many people representing all squads of the section including the social players is testament to the sense of belonging the monthly socials help to promote. The entire affair also creates the right atmosphere at the club and lives up to its status as a premier sports club where members truly belong regardless of who they are.

All dolled up for a night of glitz and glamour.
It has been an exciting first half of the year for the Netball Section; we have produced excellent results in the SCC league and on top of that, we now have more newcomers joining our section! This has definitely added a big boost to our team morale and hopefully we will carry on this spirit and momentum to the Netball League 2017. Currently, we have just started a new season of the Netball League which happens annually. It is always a good challenge and experience sparring with the opponents on court. Given the splendid results produced last season, we see the Hawks moving up a higher division this season. The next two months will be an intensive one, but nonetheless, both SCC Hawks and Ospreys will be fighting hard to maintain the great results achieved last season!
SCC END OF LEAGUE PARTY The SCC End of League Party was held earlier this month on 6th May. It was a night of glitz and glamour - having seen enough of netball kits, our ladies got dressy and dolled up for that spectacular night. Like previous years, we had invited all the other participating teams to attend and the turnout was absolutely fantastic. It was a night of fun and merry with all smiles plastered on everyone’s faces. All in all, the event was a huge success special thanks to Mads & Milsy, our social secretaries for organizing this big night!

UPCOMING EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES Looking back, we have had a great start to the calendar year. The next half looks like an extremely busy one for the Netball Section – We have the upcoming Bangkok Tour happening in a few weeks’ time where we will be sending one of our teams to take part in the annual Bangkok SEA Invitational. Unlike previous Bangkok tours, we have the special privilege of playing a friendly match with the national team in Bangkok this year. All efforts go to Jacq Ann for coordinating & making this tour happen. Best of luck to our ladies on this tour! Besides Bangkok, we have planned another Hong Kong Tour which is coming right up in November where we will be participating in the HKFC invitational. Other upcoming carnivals and socials include the Pestasukan, which is happening very soon in August, as well as the SCC annual Intersection Netball that will most likely be held some time in November alongside the JSM Carnival. So stay tuned folks, as more details on these exciting events will follow soon! Having said that, we are always on the lookout for new members aged 13 and above. JAPANESE RUGBY THRIVING IN SINGAPORE Saturday 13th May saw the SCC Rugby Section welcome rugby players from the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), the Singapore Japanese Rugby Club, and the US Navy for a friendly 7s tournament at Dempsey Field. The JMSDF squad was made up of sailors from the JS Izumo (the largest ship in the JMSDF) and the JS Sazanami, in Singapore for the republic of Singapore Navy’s inaugural International Maritime Review. A contingent from the USS Coronado represented the US Navy. Ultimately, the SCC 7s squad outclassed the others in round robin play. Rugby was the winner on the day and the final game saw the US Navy defeat the JMSDF, to bring an end to the festivities. SCC 7’s Squad
NATIONAL CLUB 7’S After the success of last season’s campaign, the 7s season officially started on the 1st of May. Once again Head Coach Suhaimi Amran is taking the helm as he and the 7’s squad embark on a 6 month training program leading up to the SCC 7s in November. 2017 is the 70th anniversary of the 7’s and momentum is building as November approaches. The SCC 7’s squad have been undergoing gruelling training sessions to get rid of all the post season “gains” under the city lights at the Padang during the week and under the blistering sun on the weekends up at Dempsey.
This will be the first time in a couple of years that SCC will enter two teams in the 2017 SRU Club 7s competition, which reflects a solid and larger squad this year. SCC are determined to defend the title win in 2016 and not let the title slip out of their hands. The last two finals have been nail biters and have seen last minute game changers that have ensured SCC win the title. So exciting times ahead and watch this space! Grrrrrr…..

The Ladies Open was played in a round robin format between the top 5 ladies currently in the country. Mao Shi Hui showed the benefits of training full time in preparation for the SEA Games. She came through unbeaten in her three matches over the tournament beating up and coming players Sneha Sivakumar and Wai Yann on the way to claiming the title and the number one spot. SCC VS HKCC SQUASH MATCH – SUNDAY 30TH APRIL 2017 It was five years ago when HKCC last brought a squash team of 19 players to Singapore. This time they bought a team of 11 with spectators. Three of the HKCC team played in both matches whilst none of the SCC players playing in this match featured five years ago, although those players are still around. SCC SCORES A DOUBLE AT THE NATIONALS We had great results at the National Squash Championships played at Kallang in April.With 2017 being a SEA Games year, not just the titles were up for grabs but also positions in the teams to represent Singapore at the Games. In the Men’s Premier competition Vivian Rhamanan came through the early rounds to face Pang Ka Hoe (UCSC) in the semi finals. Ka Hoe is one of the new generation of players slated for higher honours, but Vivian dominated him from the start of the game, matching him stroke for stroke, rally for rally and retrieve for retrieve. Ka Hoe was unable to break through and Vivian won 3-0. The final was against another UCSC junior Ben Chan, who was also rumoured to be going to give Viv a run for his money.
Unusually for us, this match was scheduled on a Sunday morning followed by lunch. Matching up unknown players is always a problem, but spies in the HK camp enabled us to provide competitive games throughout the schedule which I think was appreciated by HKCC as they had had previous encounters over the long weekend which were not particularly competitive. Proceedings started at 11.00am and after four matches we were 3-1 down and even after 6 matches we were still trailing by 2 matches with 5 left to play. However, by 12.30 our players had woken up with the top order coming through strongly to ensure we were victorious as we went into the last match. Sean Lim was our representative, in this match, against the experienced Chad Sunde (HKCC coach). Sean won the first game 15-12 thanks to his mobility and speed, but had to cover a lot of court. He went 10-2 down in the second game before recovering to 10-7, but by this time he was spent and lost the game 15-10, before finally collapsing 15-2 in the last game. It was at this time we advised him that it didn’t matter as we had won overall 6 matches to five. During a late and convivial lunch, presentations were made by both sides and a promise that we would tour to HKCC at some time in the near future either as a club or just as a section. Many thanks to the staff at the Deli-Bar who ensured we had everything we needed during the lunch break

WELCOME TO THE GRASS COURT SEASON The grass court season is upon us now, and what better way to mark this season than to wear your whites and have some Pimms after tennis. Or catch the matches on TV! What better place to do so than at the SCC!
NUMERO 10 FOR RAFAEL NADAL! Many of you would have caught the excitement of the 2017 Roland Garros in the first half of June – shock wins, shock losses, and through it all, the never-say-die spirit of all the players competing. Special mention must go to the young 20 year old Jelena Ostapenko who played fearlessly and defied all odds (100-1) to win the ladies title. Special mention must go to Rafael Nadal who fought his way into the final and won against Stanislaus Wawrinka in straight sets. More importantly, this was his 10th French Open title… what a feat! The Nike caption reflected the effort perfectly: “One is difficult, two is impressive. Ten is Rafa.”
MEN’S TENNIS IN SINGAPORE Between May and June, there were three consecutive Men’s ITF tournaments that took place in Singapore. The purpose behind these tournaments, apart from thrilling tennis fans, was also to expose Singaporean male players to more competitive matches in effort to raise their game. The tennis level was great and you could see that all players were hungry to win and chalk up points in bid to rise up the ATP rankings. Who knows, maybe the future world number one player had played at Kallang Tennis Centre in one of these ITF tournaments when he was trying to make his mark on the circuit? We are proud that SCC GC member Gilbert Ng (also known as Mr Tennis) played a key role in making these tournaments happen.

THE ITALIAN JOB: INTERVIEW WITHGIACOMO POGGI In this issue, we feature a recent addition to the tennis section and men’s team – Giacomo Poggi. Hailing from Genova, north of Italy, this young man has travelled a long way to Singapore, but has found in SCC a place where he can play the sport he enjoys most – tennis. He also travels with his tennis gear, like many of us tennis fanatics! Tell us about your tennis days in Italy, what was it like? Giacomo: I started to play tennis at the age of 6 and since that time, tennis has become more a passion for me rather than only a sport. I have to thank very much my parents that gave me the possibility to play this fantastic sport, since I was really young. What was your most memorable match you played growing up? Giacomo: I remember with pleasure a match that I played at an international tournament in Forte Dei Marmi (Tuscany, Italy) when I was a junior player (U16). That particular match was valid for the semi-finals. My opponent was another European player who was physically more grown up and probably also stronger than me. Nevertheless, after more than 3 hours of battles, I won and moved on to the finals, thanks to the capacity to be more consistent than my opponent and never give up in tough moments that occurred during the match. The day after, unfortunately I got cramps and I lost the final, but it was a very special week for me anyway. What keeps you busy in Singapore? Giacomo: Certainly my job. However, whenever I am free, I grab my tennis racket and I go to the club for training. Furthermore, I have also a lot of good friends here in Singapore that make my staying here even better and more enjoyable.

In May, SCC played host to a tennis social with Serangoon Gardens Country Club. It was a great opportunity for our social tennis players to pit their skills against different players. Thanks to all who participated in the tennis and merry making!
What do you like about the Singapore Cricket Club? Giacomo: There are so many good things about SCC that I could mention. However, I think that what makes Singapore Cricket Club very special and unique is the environment, people mentality and multiple activities that the Club arranges every day and week, allowing club members to socialise with so many people and create strong ties of friendship and networks. I am so glad to be part of this Club and I thank you very much our President, my tennis Captain Soenke and all the other club members for this opportunity. Do you bring your tennis rackets with you when you travel? Giacomo: All the time, even when I am travelling for work. Recently, I went to Sydney, where I met up with some close friends. We played in a club located in Paddington area that have real grass courts. It was Saturday and we played all day long until sunset. It was an amazing day in a very special place!
