SCC RE-DEVELOPMENT WORKS The Development Steering Committee (DSC) – will commence with the initial ‘Closure’ to renovate the Men’s Changing Room between Monday, 15 December 2014 and Saturday, 3 January 2015. The Gym will initially CLOSE from Friday, 12 December to Monday, 15 December 2014 for preparatory works, and thereafter from Monday, 5 January to Monday, 26 January 2015. Additional renovations to the Lower First Storey of the Clubhouse Building including extensive renovations to the Men’s Bar, Gym and Management Offices will commence on Monday, 5 January 2015 and work on a concurrent programme to minimise disruption to Members. Completion date is to be expected in February 2015. The Men’s Bar & Billiards will remain open until 6 January 2015 (to accommodate a “home” 1st division league game).

The Jackpot Room will be CLOSED and relocated to the existing Committee Room, which itself, will be CLOSED from 5 January 2015. The vacated space will be refurbished as a multi-purpose Food and Beverage (F&B) outlet to augment the Club’s ongoing F&B and events operations. There will regrettably be some inconvenience arising from the prescribed ‘Closures’ and also other forms of noise and unavoidable issues that come with building works. This is very much regretted. However, the programme has been engineered to minimise such disruption and to achieve and deliver the works programme within an acceptably short timetable to the Club. The General Manager will be pleased to address any pressing concerns that Members may wish to raise with him at: nigel.stearns@scc.org.sg

BOYS’ TOWN at the races Article by: Richard Stapley-Oh

D

uring the SCC’s Night Race Fiesta celebrations, members of the Club’s Management and General Committee hosted 10 lucky young Singaporeans who live at Boys’ Town to a night of motor racing fuelled fun. The 10 youngsters were chosen by Boys’ Town leadership as the highest performing and best-behaved boys in residence, and were invited to join the Night Race Fiesta on Friday night for an evening of fun, motor racing, and, most importantly, dinner. The SCC Chef’s dazzling array of F1 fare was enormously popular with the boys, in particular the pizzas and the dessert table! Boys’ Town was established in 1948 as a charitable institution, and is dedicated to providing guidance, shelter, education, vocational training and practical living skills to youths. Boys’ Town provides boarding and residential care for boys aged 10 - 21 who come primarily from large, troubled, single parent and financially needy homes. They support the boys in developing educationally, socially and physically by providing them with counselling, leadership training, sports, drama, music and hobby programmes as well as moral/religious instructions as part of their daily life. We at the Padang magazine were requested not to share any photographs of the boys as a matter of Boys’ Town policy, which we respect. So, you’ll have to imagine the joy on the faces of these young boys as they enjoyed our facilities and witnessed the F1 spectacle. We are pleased to be able to share with you the “Thank You” card the boys presented to Richard Stapley-Oh to thank the SCC for its hospitality. The SCC’s General Committee was delighted to host the Boys’ Town delegation and look forward to hosting them again as part of the 2015 Night Race Fiesta during SG50! This type of continuing and meaningful engagement with the broader Singaporean community, both on and off the sporting field, distinguishes the SCC from its peers as the Premier Sports and Social Club in Singapore.

Hosting our friends from Boys’ Town at the 2015 Night Race Fiesta will be one of many sports and social activities that the SCC looks forward to blending into the larger national SG50 celebration. SCC is a proud Singaporean institution and we will do our part to help the nation celebrate its milestone 50th anniversary, on and off the pitch. Look out for the SG50 logo this coming year, you will see it frequently. - GC Member Professor Brian Farrell

Celebration of the Festival of Lights 7 November 2014

M

embers of the SCC had a taste of the exotic with a dash of festive glitz, a sprinkling of dazzling glamour and a healthy dose of tickles and humour during its Celebration of the Festival of Lights. The evening began with the lighting of the traditional lamp by SCC Member, Mdm Gursharan Kaur. Members in attendance feasted their eyes on a series of performances: first, by the famed duo, belly dancer Inessa and, drummer Gregory who put on a spell-bindingly elegant

performance and even taught the audience a few belly-dancing moves. This was soon followed by a special appearance by Singapore’s renowned local stand-up comedian, Kumar, who, with his riotous sense of humour had everyone in stitches of laughter. The evening capped off with a pulsating Bhangra dance and non-stop music which had everyone dancing the night away. Not forgetting too, the mouth-watering spread of delicious food to satisfy rumbling tummies.

Remembrance Day 11 November 2014

E

ach year, the Club observes Remembrance Day and pays tribute in honour of the fallen Men and Women who had sacrificed their lives and served the nation with pride and dignity. In attendance at the ceremony on 11 November 2014 were the Club’s General Committee, Members, staff and guests. We also had the honour of inviting war veteran, Mr George Reynolds who was a POW survivor. We would like to thank Mr Steve Thompson and Mr Jeyathurai A, as well as distinguished Defence Advisors from the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand who were present at the ceremony.

The Club organised a BBQ on Stumps Terrace and invited our very own Sports Member, Sam Randall, from Dr Feel Good to rock the night away. With an appetising spread and groovy music aplenty, it was certainly a night to remember while fostering friendships and strengthening team spirit. Out of the 100 in attendance, 35 were invited from the Jamiyah Children’s Home to partake in the fun and seasonal merriment. The children were greeted with goodie bags and had a splashing good time at the water playground park with different slides. After frolicking around in the sun, the children came up to the Padang Restaurant for an enchanted picnic party and were given Christmas lunch boxes filled with all kinds of treats while Mr Bottle, the magician entertained with clever tricks. Elsa and Olaf also popped in to entertain the children with games and a snow dance-off. Even Santa made a special appearance delighting all, giving away presents and taking pictures with the children. Special thanks to Mrs Yvonne Yeo and her friends for lending assistance in befriending the children from Jamiyah Children’s Home and also, Mr Phil Cunningham for being our jolly Santa Claus. 28

CC exuded oriental splendour in its transformation to an era of extravagance, class and elegance – a visual embodiment of 1930s Shanghai. Reminiscent of a time when Shanghai was touted as the “Paris of the East”, the Club hosted Members and guests who were dressed in a glamorous mix of cheongsams and jazzy outfits. The charming old world feel of a bygone era was brought to life by ladies elegantly holding delicate floral fans which fluttered like exotic butterflies and men chattering away; their fedoras worn at just the right angle. Members and guests were greeted by our lovely Shanghai girls and a welcome drink before proceeding for their sumptuous dinner buffet. The tempo of the evening increased with the introduction of the ever popular Enigma Band which got many grooving and shimmying to the beat. Everyone was invited to pen their New Year wishes on balloons which were set free at the stroke of midnight - a symbol of fresh beginnings to come in the new year. The accompaniment of starry bursts of fireworks burning bright against the inky sky and the traditional “Auld Lang Syne” tune by the Gurkha pipers was truly a feast for the senses. Members and guests welcomed the dawn of 2015 as they gave thanks to the past year and raised their glasses to a wonderful new one ahead!

T

he SCC hosted the 67th Edition of its world famous International Rugby 7s tournament 2014 on 31 October through 2 November the duration of which was dedicated to our late President Mike Grice.

For the first time we had a title sponsor Societe Generale. Before going any further a huge thank you to the Tournament Chairman and Convenor of the Rugby Section Marc Lansonneur. Without his tireless work and commitment this sponsorship deal would not have come to fruition. It is a sponsorship which promises to secure the success of both the Club’s premier tournament and as well as the rugby section for several seasons. The Tournament festivities commenced as always with the draw on Thursday 30 October. The event was well attended by team officials committee and section members. They were joined by VIPs from the title sponsor the Friends of the 7s, headed by Peter Rogers. As always the draw tossed up some very interesting pool matches. None more so than pitting Borneo Eagles against

tournament favourites and 2011 and 2012 winner Daveta of Fiji. There was also a first round match up between the Societe Generale SCC 7s and tournament new comers and early favourites Tradition YCAC from Yokahama. They were joined by teams from Australia, Sweden, Kenya, Malaysia, United Kingdom, France and of course Singapore. For the first time in memory the tournament would be played without a Kiwi team although the world’s premier rugby nation was well represented in the playing ranks of various teams. Friday arrived and storm clouds loomed as kick off approached. Fortunately for the second year running we were lucky and the weather abated. It was time for the action to commence. There was some tremendous rugby given that it was day one were top seeds line up against lower ranked teams. It was also Halloween which was embraced by sections of the crowd. There were some rather beefy looking skeletons, pirates, Mexican wrestlers, a nun and I believe Bjork might have been sighted. Hopefully this is a tradition that can continue to grow. Back to the action. There were several very hard fought first up matches. Stand outs were SCC pushing YCAC till the end only to go down 19-5, a great effort against the eventual finalists. Borneo Eagles stamped their authority on the tournament early blowing away NS Wanderers, Daveta cleaned up Cottesloe and Impala from Kenya put on a show against last year’s semi finalist Sunnybank. Everything was shaping up beautifully. A very warm Saturday awaited the players as they arrived at the Padang. The day was all about hard fought close encounters. The opening match displayed this well with a 14 all draw between East Arnhem and the Singapore select. We also saw Borneo get a scare from Cottesloe and Penguins pick up a couple of wins against Grenoble University and France Development. Impala also finished the day undefeated. The cup competition was starting to look very interesting, though the hallmark of this tournament was the even nature of most of the games. Anyone who was hoping to take home silverware was going to have earned it. The highlight of the day was Daveta’s 56 point thumping of NS Wanderers, truly champagne rugby by the Fijians.

The business end of the tournament was greeted by another typically sticky Singapore day. In addition to the top level rugby the crowd was treated to some excellent junior 7s as well. We saw Anglo Chinese School beat Australian International School at under 14s level in an exciting game. This was followed by wins for Tanglin Trust in the under 16s and Under 19s. The first in a tight clash which went down to the wire against ACS and the latter over UWC. With the cup competition looking very exciting there was a lot to look forward to. There was going to be a lot of interest in the Bowl, featuring the SCC side looking for their first win after some very good performances. They had some stiff competition to overcome in Grenoble and Casuarina Cougers in their 31st year of attendance. The boys blew through the first hurdle knocking off Grenoble 24-17. Sadly it wasn’t to be in 2014 as we fell to Casuarina 15-5 in the final. Plenty to build on for 2015 for our boys. Well played lads it was entertaining and hard fought throughout! The plate became the story of Swedish Vikings returning after a year away and looking a lot stronger than the team that won the January / February 2015

bowl in 2012. After lucking out and catching a red hot Impala in the first round of the knock out they were relegated to the plate. They did not look back and having thumped the Singapore Select 45-0 they breezed past the Aussie duo of Randwick and NS Silverbacks to lift the plate. A popular win for a team that played hard and entertaining footy all weekend. The cup looked to be a battle between 5 or 6 teams. This meant there was going to be a big name casualty or two before the semifinals. After some dominant displays in the first knockout round we had some very juicy quarter finals to enjoy. We had some big names in Stade Francais, Daveta, Borneo Eagles, Tradition YCAC, Impala and last year’s beaten finalists Penguins. The result was our first casualty as YCAC beat Daveta and we said goodbye to Impala. The Kenyans had be strong all weekend and looked a genuine Cup side which was great to see. Other results meant we were left with Penguins to play Borneo Eagles and YCAC up against Stade Francais. The semi-finals were hard fought but it became apparent we were going to see a Borneo and Yokohama final, with each side eventually running out 12 point winners. The final saw more than 50 points scored in what was an end to end display from both teams. Hugely impressive fitness and athleticism after such a long hot weekend. Borneo ended up running out 33-26 winners and were deserved winners of the Ablitt Cup. Appreciation must be extended to the participating teams for providing such a closely fought and entertaining tournament. We hope to see them all return in 2015. The organising committee chaired by Marc Lansonneur again did a brilliant job and pulled off a high quality event which has received a huge amount of positive feedback. None of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the SCC staff led by Janet Ng from the Sports Department. Thanks should be extended to the General Committee for their unwavering support of this, Singapore and the Region’s premier invitational Rugby 7s tournament. We must also thank our title sponsor Societe Generale for their support both of the Tournament and of Rugby at the SCC.

ur in-house tournaments have seen very good responses this year, and, currently we are at the finals of the 3 Balls tournament, with our finalists Peter Gilchrist and Sunil Sabnani. SCC Drawn Mixed Pairs 2-4-2 Our veteran bowlers again showed their mettle with Mary Lim and newcomer Bob Gattie coming in first. It was a very competitive match with a 7-7 tie to the very last end against “Pioneers” Lew Foong and George Abraham. An inspired Bob Gattie, threw a brilliant hand with his last bowl, displacing George to clinch final victory. Retna & Prem took third place in this series played out over October/November.

Four veteran “pioneer generation” bowlers made it clear they had no intention of “fading” quietly into oblivion. With a life span totalling more than three centuries, Chai HY(skip), TQ Lim, KC Chew and Ben Cunico “raged” and stormed to resounding victory in the Annual National Fours Championship played against 4 teams of younger sportsmen on the SCC Green over two blisteringly hot Sundays in November. Tanglin Club came in second. Bowls Carnival 13 Dec The bowls calendar came to a close with a rousing carnival on Sat 13th Dec attended by some 29 bowlers. After only a few ends however, the heavens opened up and our intrepid revellers decked in red were forced out of a water-logged Green back to the Clubhouse. But all was not lost as the bar opened early, followed by a splendid repast and the arrival of Santa Derek who, with the help of elf-in-chief Sylvia, led the assembled bowlers and GC members (Baljit, Ravi, George & Cynthia) in some traditional Christmas songs.

Looking Ahead

W

e held our Christmas Special Bridge Event on the 15th of December 2014 at the Gilmour Room. Our Food and Beverage department laid out a sumptuous Christmas spread with amazingly delectable desserts. Awards were presented to the Champion Pair of the Year and Champion Pair of the Night, with John Martens and Stephanie Hodges winning a trophy and a bottle of wine each for the former and Trevor and Jai Chapman walking away with a bottle of wine each for the latter. The Champion Pair of the Year winners were selected based on 20 best games played in 2014. This Christmas event concludes our calendar year with a big bang. This year has been an eventful one especially as it was our first foray into serious competition at the annual Pot games with the Tanglin Club. We also hosted Geylang West Bridge Club for the very first time and we hope there will be more friendly games with them in the near future. A trip to Hong Kong in mid-March is something the Bridge section is looking forward to. Possible games with HKCC and Kowloon CC Bridge Sections are in the pipeline. The Bridge Section’s Monday night games continue to be well attended and there is certainly a great convivial atmosphere. We hope to reach out to SCC members who may want to learn to play Bridge as well as to renew interest in those who may not have played Bridge for some time. Everyone is welcome to drop by and watch the games on Monday evenings at the Oval Restaurant. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 40

Season Overview

I

t is fair to say that the results of the 2014 league season have been disappointing for SCC. However to simply look at the results table at the end of the year belies some of the excellent individual and team performances on the pitch during the year. We might not have done ourselves justice in all of our matches but all of our league teams have suffered more than their share of ill fortune. Injuries, absence and age have plagued our season in 2014 but nonetheless, those who have been willing and able to commit to the task have done so with no less discipline and passion than in any other year and are to be commended for that. We have also seen new talent come through the ranks of the SCC CYD programme and talented new arrivals joining the SCC. Both of these are essential to ensuring the continued renewal of the SCC cricket talent pool and to provide the necessary challenge for existing players to continually improve their game. Awards Night We had our annual season ending Awards night on 13 November 2014, to celebrate the best performances during the year. Congratulations to all the winners!

t was after three years that the SCC Darts Section clinched the title at the Pot Games on 27 November 2014.

Mr MC Cheong, Tanglin Club Darts Convenor and his team were indeed gracious hosts. Mr Cheong complimented our team for our spirit and great camaraderie. We had a series of 3-Male Singles, 2-Female Singles, 2-Men’s Doubles and 2- Mixed Doubles, lined up for the competition. We defeated Tanglin Club in the following areas: 1) 1 Male Single by Anthony Houlan 2) 2 Female Singles by Shelia and Fathima 3) 2 Men’s Doubles by Raymond Ambrose, Philip Ng, Anthony and John Spackman 4) 1 Mixed Doubles by Mike Dorris and Genevieve Chase The team worked really hard for this win, practicing almost every other day at the Men’s Bar, taking turns, as we have only 1 board for practices.

Team SCC at Keppel Club

O

n 7 November 2014, a team of 16 golfers from our Section took part in the Final leg of the 2014 Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament (ISCGT) at the Keppel Club followed by dinner hosted by the organisers, the Eurasian Association of Singapore. We were joined at dinner by Games Control Board Chairman Mr T. Ravi Chandran whom we would like to thank for supporting the Section. The 2014 team prize was shared by the Eurasian Association of Singapore and Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) with SCC coming in 4th place. For the record, we wish to inform all Section Members that we have now withdrawn from the ISCGT for 2015 and the future so that we can focus on organising more golfing activities for more of our Members to participate in. We are working on a program for 2015 with at least one event per month and are also looking at arranging a number of overseas trips which we hope will receive the support of the Members.

Each month, the Section publishes a Newsletter which is sent to Members by email. The Section subscribes to a mass mailer called Mailchimp and we have over 450 email addresses of Members stored on it. We are attempting to reconcile our mailing list with that of the SCC main members list. In addition, each month we update our list with changes to members’ email addresses, cancelled memberships and new memberships. Despite our very best efforts, we constantly receive complaints from members who say that they do not receive our Newsletter. On each occasion when we check the database we find that those members who complain have either blocked the newsletter as spam mail or have opened the email and simply not read it. The report from Mailchimp indicates no more than 50 percent of Members on the database open and read the email sent. It is therefore difficult for us to keep members informed if they do not read their email!

On 20 November 2014, we were hosted by SRC in the Padang Shield Golf at the Kranji NSRCC. We were hard-pressed to field a team of 20 golfers due to year end commitments. We lost the match to SRC but SCC won overall in the Padang Shield event. We would like to thank SRC for their wonderful hospitality after the golf match and also on the night of the Padang Shield awards. A party of 21 made a 2-day tour to Batam on the 10th and 11th December playing at Indah Puri and Southlinks on consecutive days. In between we managed a round of “Pub Golf” which tested members’ skills in a different way! Medal winner on day one was Francis Ong and on day two Richard Stapley-Oh, who shot a remarkable gross 78, despite a hangover from winning the Pub Golf competition. Richard Loo, our leader, finished last on day one, winning the venerated Toilet Brush award, but he recovered his form to take 2nd place on day two. We have a fixed date for the annual SCC versus Changi GC match on 25th January 2015.

lack and gold was the theme of the annual Hockey Awards Dinner and there was plenty of glitz and glamour on show from both the men and women as they packed out The Padang restaurant for a night of fun and celebration, looking back on the season that was. Emceed by the double-act of Roz and Paddy, everyone filled their plates and glasses and toasted the award winners of the night – or those that had turned up! It seemed that most of the golden ball recipients had badly managed their social schedule and missed out on collecting their gong in person, but those present more than made up for it. The big winners of the night were the Men’s 1st XI taking ‘Team of the Year’, and Laura Trythall collecting an SCC Hockey Blazer as ‘Club Person of the Year’ before she set sail for pastures new.

A big thank you to Pauline and Sean for organising the evening. We are looking forward to the next one! Gossip from the Goal Line… ATTENTION ! The Adjutant General’s Corps / British Army (AGC) stopped over in Singapore on 8 November 2014 and put out a women’s and men’s team for a friendly match against SCC at Delta. This was the last leg of a two and a half week tour of Australia before heading home. Under the blistering heat, it was SCC that came out on top in both matches: 1-0 to the ladies after a stunning goal by Saro; and 3-2 to our men with a comefrom-behind win. The match was followed by the obligatory cool down and chillout at Stumps Bar where the drinks and laughter flowed and a great night was had by all. AGC was full of praise for their hosts and the reception laid on for them; they also gave out some awards to show their appreciation. Laura Rogers was awarded Women’s Player of the Match and Keran Tallent was awarded for his efforts in goal for the men.

SCC Hawks at the Padang Shield 2014

A

s the year drew to an end, we saw a greater level of netballing activity take off, both on and off the court, and everyone sure did enjoy themselves.

JSM Carnival Started last year to encourage a greater level of participation and recruitment of junior sports members in the Netball Section, the 2nd edition this year proved to be a roaring success. The carnival, run by our JSMs for secondary school students in Singapore saw 11 teams from the local schools taking part. The semi-final and final placing games for the U15 and U17 category were tight and intense, of which a few games went into extra time. The JSM carnival also broke last year’s record of consuming 58 pizzas in an afternoon! Who said girls can’t eat!! A yearly highlight of the netball calendar now, this year’s success is attributed to our JSM Liaison, Jacq Ann and the support of the Club and the wider Netball Section. Way to go Jacq Ann! Year-End League A few clubs came together to organise a year end league to provide more playing opportunities to players. Our players played in 2 ladies and 1 mixed division. The league proved to be a good opportunity to mix things up and try a few new things as we prepare for a New Year and stronger team play in 2015. The mixed team also saw more players getting into the mix and the team strengthened as the league progressed. Pulling off 2 key games towards the tail end of the league, the team came in 3rd with much promise for next year. Kudos to the men who took the time to play!

Padang Shield As another Padang Shield dawned on us, the Hawks team was sent to battle against our arch nemesis on our home ground. While the SCC Hawks had the advantage of experience (on average over 10 years) on the young SRC team, our age, or rather theirs reflected on court with the nimbleness and speed that the Hawks couldn’t contend with. While the results weren’t to our favour, we’re proud to put up a team of regular SCC players. 2015 holds a host of activities for the Section – we have got our SCC Netball League kicking off in February kicking off the netball new year! We have also got on board a second coach, Hui Mui, who’s not a stranger to SCC Netball and look forward to more dedicated trainings for the respective teams. We start training in January and as always welcome new players with open arms! Trainings are on Wednesdays at the SCC courts at 7pm. Please email us at sccnetball@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Here's to a wonderful 2015 from the Netball Section!

I

would like to thank all involved for what was considered to be the biggest and certainly most emotional and fun tour to Phuket.

The PADS certainly have it 101 percent on what Phuket is all about. Each one of you conducted yourselves with the YFH and amazing kids with absolute honor and respect. We know what this means and we can hold our heads high for many reasons. This tour proved to be a memorable one from the Golf Day, to the Sports Day with the kids, and the match and pageant finale which I am certain will be discussed time and again for thousands of reasons. On to the match - We lost 2-3 in what was an amazing game of football and one in which the PADS achieved the best result possible. We took our 26 squad members (fit and injured) to Phuket where 23 played and gave 101% to achieve the best result. The PADS (no-one else was needed) came back from 0-3 to do the impossible and steal a draw / win against what was probably the strongest HKFC. On another note, friends that were sent to Phuket were truly amazing. We conceded a soft goal when we were caught out by the roll on / off substitution and went in 0-1 in the first quarter. Slack marking in the second quarter saw us concede a second to go in 0-2 at half time. A totally committed and all-out attack started from the PADS playing our infamous champagne football. After hitting the bar and post we were caught again by a counter attack and went into the last 20 minutes 0-3 down. A quick strike put us 1-3 and further saves by the keeper, hitting

the post twice, and a scrambled own goal put us 2-3 with 5 minutes to go. Those 5 minutes were spent in the HKFC half as we pushed and pushed for the equalizer to keep the cup in Singapore. Unfortunately it was not to be and with a goal disallowed for offside and a superb save from a fantastic solo effort from Amos in the last 5 minutes we conceded the cup 2-3. Every PAD who wore the black PAD can hold his head high and we all certainly know what it means now to pull on the black PAD. 1. Ronnie ‘Dolly’ Smollet Superb in goal as always with 3 magnificent saves and incredible kicking – outstanding. 14. TV Steve Dawson Playing his virgin Henrik Lorenz. Solid in defence and never had a problem. Pushed forward and made many telling passes and continuous crossing. Mr. Cool, but had to be in those boots outstanding. 4. Brian ‘Talcoholic’ Lavelle Played his heart out and did everything possible to ensure that nothing got past him and continuously rallied the troops around the colours – outstanding. 25. Gordon ‘Scarlet’ Deas Outstanding in defence as always and definitely let no one pass him – outstanding.

10. Paul ‘The Kaiser’ Coutts The rock of the back four who showed quality and composure at all times in his first Henrik Lorenz – outstanding. 29. Alan ‘The Landlord’ Jope Stood firm and followed the strikers everywhere, never giving up and never shied away from putting the tackles in and confirmed by the HKFC entire front line- outstanding. 21. Paul ‘Paffs’ Paffet One of the best performances of the season, got stuck in from the start and did not concede one tackle – outstanding. 2. John ‘Bacardi Kidd’ Thomas One of the man of the match starlets, never gave up, made so many telling tackles and chased the blue shirts everywhere – outstanding. 23. Brendan ‘The Wanderer’ Warner Another Henrik Lorenz virgin, made so many telling tackles, won the ball and managed three 60 yard shots at goal and exhilarating dribbles – outstanding 13. Sir John Fernandez An honor to play with and to be on the pitch with whenever he pulls on the black PAD. Played with so much enthusiasm and showed class and composure in the last 20 minutes – outstanding.

several crunching tackles too. Rallied the troops and ran his heart out to the end – outstanding. 7. Jim ‘Ya-Mez’ Redfern Massive morale boost seeing Jim back on the pitch and showing his class and cool play under pressure. He was solid in his tackling and class with his passing – outstanding. 3. Pat ‘Paddy’ Read Wow. Took the game and the HKFC on and created cross after cross and chance after chance. He deserved to score when his run and shot ended by striking the bar after beating the entire HKFC side including the keeper with his run and shot – outstanding. 22. Leslie ‘Mr. Chow’ Chia Playing his virgin Henrik Lorenz, he put everything in whenever called on and had a couple of shots at goal. Played as always with passion – outstanding.

9. Boon As always made run after run at the HKFC back four and picked up many battle scars for his efforts – outstanding.

30. John ‘Disco’ Duffy One of the injured souls who played a massive game from the sidelines and drove us on to the end – outstanding.

12. Andy ‘Liza’ Minellas Playing his virgin Henrik Lorenz, never gave up, chased and harassed and never bottled it– outstanding.

17. Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Tang Wore the black PAD with pride, stood firm, chased and harassed and stopped several attacks from midfield – outstanding.

8. Amos ‘Sonic’ Boon Took hold of the game and ran his heart out against the opposition, never gave up and created chance after chance. Deserved to score with his solo effort in the dying minutes and showed his smooth skills with the show boat flick –outstanding.

36. Alex ‘Killer’ Khan Played his best game of the season, held the ball up, classy layoffs and showed what he could do – outstanding.

16. Toe Knee Hop Wood Another one of the starlets that played his heart out and never lost a tackle and competed in the air. Ran everywhere to the end– outstanding. 15. Jim Parkin Another one of the starlets who never gave up, played his heart out twice, encouraged and raised morale and covered every blade of grass at the YFH to the end– outstanding. 26. Peter ’Ozzie Pineapple’ Halliday Pulled up with injury and made the hardest decision there is to make. Quality play as always and put everything in from the touchline – outstanding. 18. Peter ‘Shooter’ Schott Sat in midfield and played the ball around in style and made

19. Jas ‘Jazzy’ Bhens As always, showed his class and caused problems at all times with his continuous running and stuck at upsetting the defenders – outstanding. 24. Mark ‘Lighthouse’ Patel Another injured soul that drove us on to the end with his encouragement and never let us give up, at least he wasn’t offside – outstanding. What is more important, we now have the YFH strongly in our hearts as we grow closer and closer to our new family and our adorable kids – they stole the show and to see the happiness in their faces when we are with them – is captivating. We must do all that is possible to support this family and keep those faces smiling. PADS, you are an absolute credit! January / February 2015

he Squash Section celebrated World Squash Day on 18 October 2014. It was an enjoyable afternoon with about 60 Section Members turning up to support the event. This year’s theme was ‘Go For It’ and indeed all 48 players that went on court gave every ounce of sweat and effort on a new format of one set of continuous 20 minutes play.

January - May 2015

The Ladies final between former national player Pamela Chua and Andrea Nicholas was played, but there was no Cup to be presented - it cannot be found in the Club. The Club Champs were played over 2 weekends with 2 Men’s Divisions of 30 players. The Men’s Division 1 final was between youngster Rutvik Rao and dark horse Sandip Talukdar. The final was a closely fought 5-setter, with Rutvik prevailing in the end.

Most of the matches were well contested and both teams were neck & neck right till the end with the turquoise team eking out a narrow victory over the orange Wai Keng and Shirley team. Kudos to the captains, Manmindar and Allan, for their brilliant and smooth running of the matches.

Other Results: Men’s Open Plate winner Tim Soh beat Brian Van Gingkel Men’s Division 1 Plate Winner Tim Howard beat Max King

New Year’s Resolution: More Tennis

Ladies’ A team - Runners-up in the Interclub Doubles League (Sept – Oct 2014). Men’s C - Semi-finalists. SCC drew with SRC in the Padang Shield Games and won the Pot Games against Tanglin Club.

Happy 2015! We hope that playing more tennis is on the list of your new year’s resolutions. Here are some opportunities for you to play at the Club: • Every Friday: Tennis Social • Every last Friday of the month: Tennis Social + ‘Makan Kechil’ (light bites)

Silverware aside, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all players and supporters (silent or loud!) for their support and encouragement. “The ball kid trainings were once a fortnight for several hours, and increased to once every week and the WTA finals suddenly seemed very real. I started to get excited about seeing and being up close and personal with the top eight players in the world. I had a chance to be close to Peng Shuai, Cara Black and Caroline Wozniacki as I accompanied them on court. It was like a dream come true. 10 days of the WTA finals flew by way too fast. I guess time really flies when you’re having fun. From feeling nervous on the first day and not wanting to mess up, to feeling a tinge of sadness on the day of the finals- the last day. I’m looking forward to the next edition!”

While there has been much coverage on this, in this article for the SCC. we feature just a few of our many Section Members who were involved in the tournament in one way or another. Melissa Pine, Tournament Director, WTA Finals Singapore Gilbert Ng (aka Mr Tennis), Competition Manager Future (also plays on the SCC Ladies’ A team) Melissa Pine moved to Stars Tournament Gilbert was the competition manager for one Singapore earlier this year to focus on the preparations for the WTA of the Fan Festival events organised to showcase the best of U-14 and finals debut in Singapore. U-16 female juniors from the region. This event was supported by Sport Singapore, Singapore Tennis Association and WTA. “Needless to say the standard of play was high and the competition was keen,” said Gilbert. “At the conclusion of the tournament parents and coaches of players were happy with the quality of matches and the hospitality extended by Singapore.” Laura Foo, SCC JSM and Ball Girl at the WTA Finals Laura’s a confident player on court, but was a little nervous when it came to being a ball girl for the WTA finals. She shares her experience here. “I was reluctant to say the least when I found out my mom had signed me up to be a ball kid. I admit that I was scared of being a ball kid simply due to the fact that there was actually a chance of falling on court and publicly embarrassing myself. Despite that, my journey of being a ball kid started.”

Melissa shared that WTA’s objectives are to grow the brand in the region, to help spread the message about the WTA, who they are and what they stand for. The WTA has over 40 years of history, a very strong and compelling story based on the principles of empowerment of women, equality, accessibility, health and fitness. Melissa said, “We want to engage with as many people as possible within Singapore and the region to pick up a racket and play the game. The first year was a resounding success. We had received tremendous support from our partners, Singapore Tourism Board, Sport Singapore and World Sport Group. As well as our sponsors, including BNP Paribas and SC Global, which made settling in a smooth process. I am thrilled with what we have accomplished in this inaugural year in Singapore.” The event attracted more than 129,000 fans to the Singapore Sports Hub, with more than 93,000 attending the matches at the Singapore Indoor Stadium Center Court.
