Welcome to a brand new year We have plenty to look forward to in the coming months at the Club with many exciting events both in the social and sports front. But first, let us briefly recap SCC’s performance in the past year. I am most pleased to share that our budget year-end results for 2016 are positive and encouraging. Various initiatives such as a productivity and cost review had been implemented to achieve a good year. The welcome addition of our interim General Manager and new Financial Controller to the SCC management had been instrumental in the rejuvenation of internal policies and procedures. The appointment of our new Membership Sales Manager has also produced a positive impact on our membership sales revenue. Vibrant events such as the annual Night Race Fiesta also contributed to the boost of Club revenue in general with sold-out tickets over the three days. The 69th SCC International Rugby 7s resulted in a financial achievement too with a comfortable surplus. We remain hopeful and optimistic of an even better year ahead of us with your continued support and patronage. A testament to our wonderful SCC spirit was the recently concluded Viva Mexico Countdown Ball at which many of you had a great evening in the company of family and friends whilst savouring the array of delicious food and beverage prepared by our skilled chefs. Coming up in a few months will be the 23rd SCC International Hockey Sixes Tournament on 4 and 5 March at the Padang. Come support the teams and partake in the SCC sporting festivities. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our members – Peter Gilchrist and Virginia Longfellow. Peter represented Singapore at the 2016 IBSF World Billiards Championships in December and emerged victorious with his 4th Long up World Title. Virginia on the other hand, represented Singapore in Lawn Bowls a month earlier at the World Singles Champion of Champions in Australia where she placed third after Australia and USA and won a place in the finals taking home a worthy bronze. Congratulations, Peter and Virginia! Another sporting achievement deserving special mention is the Bowls Section’s spectacular win in Hong Kong. Proving that you are never too old for sports, our SCC team of 18 bowlers, well into their golden years, triumphed over the younger opposition of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club and the Kowloon Bowling Green Club to lay claim on the annual Triangular Cup which we last won 11 years ago. Let’s keep striving for the best. Well done, Team SCC! I wish all Members a bountiful and prosperous New Year at this vibrant and historic establishment on the Padang.

Excellent Service Award 2016 The Excellent Service Award (EXSA) is a national award that recognises individuals who have delivered outstanding service. It seeks to develop service models for staff to emulate, create service champions, professionalise services and raise the prestige of a career in the service industry. The SCC first nominated its employees for the EXSA in 2014. This year, for the third year running and for the first time SCC had the most number of award recipients – 24 in total, including five Star Award recipients as well as an ‘Outstanding Star’ award nominee – Sports Manager, Ms Wendy Foo. On 5 December, President Mr Mohan Bhojwani presented the EXSA awards at the Gilmour Room. All the EXSA award recipients have passed a set of eligibility and award criteria; and attended a Service Development workshop conducted by the Singapore Hotel Association before being conferred the Award. SCC congratulates all award recipients for their commitment to service excellence and encourages all staff to continue to do their best to create a memorable experience to the members and their guests. From the Desk of Chairman, Food & Beverage Subcommittee I am most pleased to report that despite this year being a challenging one the Committee has been focused on implementing initiatives for the continuous improvement of SCC’s Food & Beverage (F&B) department. The direction and objectives of the F&B Subcommittee has been to review and recommend ways to enhance service, staff training and retention, general food quality and value for money whilst ensuring cost efficiency across the department. A wide variety of F&B promotions have been introduced this year which have helped to generate revenue and Members’ interest in our bars and restaurants. These include a refined menu at The Padang Restaurant with ‘Brasserie Old Classics’, ‘Tapas Thursday’ and the popular ‘Wagyu Beef’ promotion all of which features fresh quality produce. More similar promotions are intended for 2017 and any suggestions you may have are genuinely encouraged.

The SCC Night Race Fiesta was a highly successful event along with other club-wide events such as the Rugby 7s, festive celebrations and the New Years’ Eve Ball – these continued to generate and improve our F&B revenue. We have added additional focus this year emphasising on the importance of regular staff training. We will continue to invest in these trainings in aid of the development of our staff skills which ultimately uplifts the overall service quality of the Club. Last year several of our staff received Excellent Service Awards in recognition of their outstanding service. The F&B department places high priority in ensuring that we diligently strive to maintain the highest standards of food, hygiene and sanitation in our kitchens. Our F&B outlets have been awarded an ‘A’ Grade by the National Environment Agency. The subcommittee and management will continue to supervise and monitor our food preparation and handling procedures as well as matters relating to personal hygiene.

The introduction of our new Chef De Cuisine, Vik, has been received positively by The Padang Restaurant patrons and his appointment has injected a welcomed stream of professional creativity and passion to the outlet and his team. Vik along with the subcommittee is currently finalising improved lunch and evening menu at The Padang Restaurant that is focused on offering delicious wholesome food. Not to be concerned, the traditional Padang favorites will remain, but it is essential that we continue to re-engineer the menus at regular intervals to heighten members’ continued support for this delightful outlet. This goes for all outlets. Further events showcasing the professional talents of our chefs at the individual outlets are to be expected throughout 2017. This will also include various local and international celebrity chefs. With the wonderful selection of F&B and stunning views from The Padang Restaurant, Gilmour Room and Terraces our banqueting services remains abuzz, with members’ social

Recent Events Remembrance Day 11 November 2016
Remembrance Day was observed at the Club on 11 November with a simple ceremony at the Cenotaph located at the Esplanade Park where a tribute was paid to the fallen men and women who had selflessly served and defended the nation with dignity and pride during the First World War. In attendance at the ceremony were the Club’s General Committee, members, guests and staff. We would like to thank Professor Brian Farrell as well as distinguished Defence Advisors from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and the United States who were present at the commemoration.

The Intersection Social Night was organised with the purpose of banding members from different Sports Sections and all walks of life together for a night of social revelry and great camaraderie. And what a night it was! The Stumps Terrace was filled with merriment as members enjoyed a sumptuous BBQ dinner and spent the evening expanding their social network around the club.

Recent Events Deepavali Celebration 11 November 2016
Members and guests celebrated Deepavali at the Main Lounge on 11 November which commenced with the auspicious lighting of the lamp by President Manu Bhojwani. Also gracing this ceremony alongside were Social Events Chairlady Joyce Foster, Ex-President Mr Haider Sithawalla and his wife as well as Mr and Mrs Samtani Ishwar. The evening was packed with plenty of vibrant performances such as the wildly popular Bhangra dance, drawing thundering applause for their spectacular dance movements. Members also enjoyed the entertaining peacock and belly dances. Dressed in sequined and colourful ethnic wear, members and guests feasted on a decadent spread of authentic North and South Indian delights prepared by our chefs and danced into the night with the DJ spinning popular tunes.

Jointly presented by SCC and Evolve Arts, a Christmas pantomime ‘Once Upon A Santa’ was held on 17 December at The Padang Restaurant. Children and adults alike re-discovered the joy of reading, the gift of giving and the magic of the Christmas spirit through a fun and interactive story-telling session with songs and dances. Everyone attended had a merry time playing with games and the lucky children also received a present from Santa!

Singapore Cricket Club ushered in the New Year with a bang at the Viva Mexico Countdown Ball. Members and guests came to the party in their elegant dresses and stylish suits, accessorised to the vibrant and festive theme. As the clock struck midnight, the tune of Auld Lang Syne by the Gurkha Pipers resounded, coupled with thumps of fireworks in the background of the Civic District sky, marking the start of 2017. With well wishes all around, everyone had a great time and danced to the powerhouse performance by ‘comeback’ band, Jellybean Jam from Australia.

ACADEMIES TO THE FORE Of all the news shared, this probably gives one the most pleasure. Congratulations to Peter Gilchrist for being crowned Long Up Champion at the 2016 IBSF World Billiards Championship and to Virginia Longfellow for taking the bronze medal at the Lawn Bowls World Champion of Champions tournament held in Australia. They have done Singapore and the SCC proud. Going forward there is a greater stress on growing our academies into a centre of sporting excellence and channelling the funds into our sporting sections. This will provide a steady stream of junior, sports and ordinary members, besides additional income. The Rugby Academy has transformed itself into a ‘non-profit organisation’, with all profits being channelled back into the sport. Under head coaches Bryan Lim and Suhaimi Amran (nominee for Singapore Sportsman of the Year award in 2012), the academy has 460 kids and works actively with local schools like ACS, Pioneer Secondary and Regent Secondary. There is a coaching infrastructure in place at SCC for Rugby, Cricket, Soccer, Tennis, Squash, Netball and soon, in Hockey. It will of course take us some time to develop them into a perfect role. But the process has started for them to recruit players and generate revenues into our sporting system. It is also a pleasure to report that the 69th SCC rugby 7s was a great success. It was profitable and very well covered by the newspapers. The games played were of the highest standard of sevens rugby and our own SCC team won the Plate! After having worked extensively this year on our financial model, the Games Control Board is now actively working to grow our sports.

Article by Jonathan Leow, SCC Rugby 7s Committee | Photos courtesy of Suhardi Saad & Khairi Omar If 2015 was a challenging year for the Club and the SCC Rugby 7s in particular, then 2016 was interesting in more ways than one as the 69th edition beckoned. A greater focus this year was sought to ensure the spirit of the tournament was kept within means and to ensure that we would head into a 70th Anniversary tournament in 2017. A revamped stadium layout which saw the famed Guinness Bar merged with the public stand was met with some very positive support and the overall atmosphere of the tournament was alive and well, as were the excited shrieks coming from the expanded kid’s area. On the field, it was a great tournament that did not disappoint. 16 top teams descended on the Padang to compete for the Ablitt Cup and we welcomed back old favourite, Daveta, after a one year absence. The Fijians were clearly looking to make up for last time and came with a couple of gold dusted Olympians for extra measure. Old friends the Penguins came with a side loaded with class acts from the Southern Hemisphere and did look good in training. England Development returned for another year and came with a promise of a much stronger team than in 2015. True to their word they brought with them a couple of World Series regulars including a familiar face to some on the Padang in former player of the tournament, Warwick Lahmert. Sunnybank were the dark horses of the tournament and came with some talent of their own, including former Queensland Reds utility back Richard Kingi.
The Schools & Colleges tournament was held this year on the Friday before the main tournament, and a total of over 2,000 youth and supporters were on the Padang across the two tournaments. It was almost a clean sweep for the French School as they won both the Len Foster Cup (U14) and John Clark (U16) trophies on Sunday afternoon. The Tanglin Trust School continued to stamp their dominance for the Sithawalla Cup and won the U18 category in fine fashion. The uniqueness of having three tournaments across five days was certainly no mean feat, but added to the colour and charm of the region’s oldest rugby 7s tournament. Preliminary rounds of any tournament will give a good idea of who are the favourites, but Sunnybank really shook up the standings when they defeated Daveta on Saturday. The Fijians, who had looked a little slow off the gas in their first game on Friday against InterOil Turagu from PNG, got into gear a little too late against the Australians and despite some last minute heroics by Rio Olympic Gold Medallist Jerry Tuwai suffered their first loss of the tournament. Sunnybank clearly showed their intent and that was to set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
We did welcome a pair of newcomers as well, with Froggies from France boasting some top talent from various French Rugby Academies (not wineries) and the RAF Spitfires flying the flag high for the Royal Airforce. The Spitfires certainly were taking the tournament seriously and were the first to reach our shores for reconnaissance and acclimatization. The SCC 7s encompasses the SCC Rugby Academy Tournament, held a weekend before the main tournament and the Schools & Colleges tournament, which gives the opportunity for local schools and local based international schools the chance to battle for bragging rights to be the best 7s team in Singapore. The hosts SCC were also looking good this year and had in flyer Iewan Bartels, a guest player who scored no less than eight tries after day one. Coach Suhami Amran, who has played for the Club at the 7s and is a former Junior Sports Member, worked a core group of players hard and seemed to have reaped the rewards as the tournament headed into Day 3. England Academy was quietly progressing and played some great rugby on route to a quarter-final match-up with the vaunted Fijians despite a loss of their own. It seemed a forgone conclusion as the teams marched out that the freewheeling Fijians would romp over the English. Daveta however made too many mistakes and were punished by their disciplined opponents who took the lead and then held on stubbornly after Daveta failed to convert their second-half try. With that, the pre-tournament favourites were out of the Cup and left to contest the Shield (which they won against Day 1 opponents Interoil Turagu) as England Development went on to defeat the Penguins in the semi-finals to set up a final against previous winners of the Ablitt Cup, Sunnybank. Sunnybank had been quiet underdogs from the start of the tournament with a steady win over fellow Australians Palmyra in the quarter-finals. Their dominant win over a rising French Development side in the semi-finals raised a few eyebrows and it was indeed a great final that preceded when they met England as evening settled on Day 3 of the tournament. In the Final, England Academy displayed a potent combination of skill, physicality and tactics on the Padang, despite trading tries in the early exchanges of the game. The Englishmen remained steady, as they scored a last minute try to enter the half leading 21-14. They tightened their grip on the Cup in the second half, outscoring their opponents 19-7 to ease their way to victory. Sunnybank were always in the game, but smart possession of the ball led the English Development Team to claim the Ablitt Cup for the first time 40 -21.
England Development Captain Ethan Waddleton said, “It was a tough final, especially in the first half when the score line was pretty narrow. It’s always tough playing five games in the tournament and still have a 20-minute one at the end. The fitness helps of course, but we backed our skills up with good decisions and good defence as well. In the second half, we knew we had a little bit of engine on them so it was just putting our finishing touches on and getting a few tries, missing only one of the scoring opportunities.” Sunnybank centre and captain of the 2016 Queensland U20s side, Fred Dorrough, who returned to the tournament for the third time, rated the 2016 instalment as his favourite yet. “It was a pretty special tournament. It was my third time at the event and this was definitely my favourite one. Reaching the Cup final was the best we’ve ever gone and I think that’s really going to help us moving forward,” Dorrough said. SCC’s Iewan Bartels was awarded the Ashforth Cup, an honour reserved for the Player of the Tournament capping a landmark day for the SCC 7s team as they won the Plate for the first time in front of their home crowd, defeating NS Wanderers, 26-14 in the Finals and earning the host their best finish in 20 years at home. Weary hands from the members of the Organising Committee raised glasses on Sunday night for a job well done, with a few ones even raising their hands for another year. The 70th edition will be the tournament’s platinum anniversary, making the event one of the oldest sporting events in Singapore and the oldest 7s tournament outside of Europe. Much to look forward to with such an enriching experience, which was 2016. So all in all it was a great tournament with some new changes and challenges, nothing too difficult to overcome with some shared passion and club spirit which was shown throughout the weekend. Much thanks to the members of the General Committee for their support and belief in the Organising Committee, our sponsors and the general membership of the Club who showed their support in so many ways.

Brian Lara visits SCC Singapore Cricket Club had the pleasure of hosting cricket legend Brian Lara on the weekend of 12-13 November. A packed calendar of events was organised over the weekend. After arriving from Kuala Lumpur on a Friday morning, Brian relaxed with a round of golf at Raffles Country Club. His activities at SCC kicked off with an appearance at the Cricket Section Awards dinner, where he presented a specially signed cricket bat to Club President, Manu Bhojwani. Events on Saturday kicked off at 8am with the kids’ cricket day, organised by SCC Cricket Coach Ricky Anderson. Brian arrived at 9.45am and the games of cricket being played were forgotten, with the kids rushing to greet him and get an autograph from one of the greats of the game. After 20 minutes of mayhem and a few photos, things settled down a bit with a coaching Masterclass for 12 lucky participants including Lions players Wilfed Diepeveen and James Kilbee and Singapore U19 representative Sean Aggarwal. Despite the downpour that cut the class short, all of the participants benefitted greatly from the hands on advice given during the morning. The morning’s events were covered by Fox Sports, with a great piece appearing on Saturday night showcasing the Club. Brian was very complimentary of the skills he saw on display, as well as the enthusiasm of the kids. The main event followed that evening, with dinner for 170 cricket lovers at Raffles Hotel. Comedian Jonathan Atherton warmed the audience up before our own Unmish Parthasarathi conducted a highly entertaining interview with Brian for over an hour. Stories of West Indies tours, gripping test matches and the incredible record scoring feats of our guest held the crowd spellbound before some Q&A from the audience was abruptly brought to a close by a Tom Corrie question which we don’t think he even understood. A round of golf on Sunday afternoon at Sentosa with 7 lucky golfers concluded the tour.

In terms of Section activities it was relatively quiet as we prepared to bid farewell to 2016. Our usual Christmas Bash was very well attended with plenty of delicious food and drinks and not forgetting high festive spirits all around - all agreed it was a great evening of camaraderie and merriment. We were approached by Cuesports Singapore for the use of our table for their selection of key players. These players were to be recommended to the Singapore Sports Council to represent Singapore in the SEA Games. Our representative Glen Yeo battled it out on the table with his skills and emerged the best amongst all which has prompted Cuesports Singapore to recommend him to partner Peter Gilchrist in the hopes of sweeping a championship for the country. Our Member Peter Gilchrist represented Singapore to play in the World Billiards Chamionship early December. We are proud and glad to announce that Peter has once again earned glory for Singapore by winning his 4th World Title. Congratulations Peter! Peter followed up this victory by being the first Runners Up in the 150 up billiards tournament. Continue to watch this space as we are now participating in two divisions of The Singapore Snooker Tournament – one tournament in Division 1 and another in Division 5. Our Convenor is pleased that there is a steady increase of participants in our activities. Also in the works is a major tour which will be announced in due course.

IN-HOUSE BALUT NIGHTS These monthly events usually held on a Tuesday evening are the underpinning of SCC’s thriving Balut Section. Tasty makan is followed by several rounds of this dice game interspersed with drink rounds and screams of delight whenever a “Balut” is achieved. The last two in-house events for the year were held on 18 October and 15 November. Displaying great consistency, Section Captain Raj Kumar not only gained top honours on both nights (and the coveted bottle of Chivas Regal Scotch whiskey) but his overall points total has made him our In-House Balut Champion of 2016. Not far behind him on the honours list, in descending order are: Mohan Balagopal, Anwar Gaffoor, Yeoh Foo Yong and our very own ‘Mr Balut’ Section Secretary, John Taylor. Our special thanks to Thipa Mogan, Eunicia Tan, Becky Xu and Ken Ang for their help in running our events smoothly. And of course to Rajan Menon of Pernod Ricard for ensuring we always have several great prizes to give away at every in-house event. 32ND ANNUAL INTER-CLUB LEAGUE On 26 October, the sixth and final round of our local Balut League matches took place, hosted by the Indian Association. SCC’s Team 5 emerged as 2016 Inter-club League Champions (Jasmin Fisher & Ben Cunico; Else Stokkmo & Foo Yong). Jasmin won the coveted 2016 Baluteer of the Year award with Else and Foo Yong taking second and third place overall respectively. A marvellous achievement, ladies!

36TH STC CHIVAS REGAL INTERPORT This was a huge event hosted by the Kinabalu Yacht Club on 25 and 26 November with 144 players in 36 teams participating. There were several teams from all over Sabah (Sandakan, Miri, Tawau and Sarawak), plus the Manila Yacht Club. Singapore was well represented by four teams from SCC, as well as teams from The Tanglin Club, SRC, IA and Eurasian Association. Worthy winners of the overall Team Championship and recipients of the Chivas Regal Challenge Trophy from Rajan Menon was NUSS. It was a joyous occasion of fellowship, eating, drinking and marvelling at the local dance provided

BRIDGE ACTIVITIES Mondays in the Victoria Room continue to be lively as members of the Bridge Section gather for an evening of fun and friendly competition. The weekly bridge sessions welcome participants of all levels of skill and expertise as the secret to improving the standard of one’s game is “practice, practice, practice”. The Deepavali celebration on 14 November was well-attended and participants were treated to a selection of delicious Indian finger foods. Prizes in the form of vouchers were awarded to the top two pairs, Stephanie Hodges and partner John Martens, as well as Beng Tee Haythornthwaite and Chan King Fook. In addition, there was a prize for the pair nearest to a score of 40% – Judy Hunt and Richard Holloway. Well done! At the point of writing, Members are looking forward to the next special event, the Christmas celebration, which was scheduled

At the recent Bridge Section committee meeting, plans for the year ahead were drawn up. 2017 promises to be a busy year with various inter-club competitions to look forward to. The Bridge Section usually sponsors several pairs to participate in the various tournaments, in the spirit of camaraderie and friendly rivalry. In addition, beginners and intermediate courses are planned for the first quarter of the year – dates to be confirmed, so watch this space! WORLD SINGLES CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS Virginia was in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia representing Singapore at the Singles Champion of Champions in November. In Section Play she finished with 7-3 Win-Loss and placed 3rd after Australia and USA won a place in the Finals Play Offs. She drew USA for the Quarter Virginia in Gold Coast Final and it was USA who won the match in Section Play by a close 9-3, 7-7. No worries! A 1-11, 11-4, 6-0 victory took her to the Semi Final! In the Semi Final she lost to Australia who went on to win the event against Brunei. Virginia and Norfolk Island jointly took the Bronze. Congratulations, Virginia! And many saw you in the SCC shirt holding the Singapore flag! Thanks for the great showing! World Singles Champion of Champions is an event of World Bowls and all entries are national champions of the member nations. This is an event where the players compete as Champions and return home as Champions!
WORLD BOWLS 2016 Christian and Jo were in Christchurch, New Zealand representing Singapore at World Bowls in Pairs and Fours for Men and for Women. Pairs and Fours were the only disciplines for which Singapore had qualified. They acquitted themselves well but these are team events and their teams did not reach the Finals Play Offs. World Bowls is an event that is held once every 4 years and it is arguably the most prestigious event on the calendar of World Bowls (the international organisation).

MCKEAN CUP – MEN’S SINGLES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP W.A. ROSE BOWL – LADIES’ SINGLES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP October 15 was Finals day for the Club Singles Championships for Men and for Women. In the Men’s event Euan the newest JSM won his way through to meet Melvin who was himself a JSM for some years until recently and in the Women’s event Amira who won all her games in the League was due to play another JSM, Shermeen. In the Men’s event there was also the Medal match for 3rd place between Edmund and Menon and how well we’ve seen Menon play lately! A long and hard battle was in store! In the end it was a close finish and both were relieved it was over. The Bronze went to Edmund! Well done, Edmund and “KU”! Back to the Men’s Final. Melvin took some time to settle down and you don’t do that playing against a future Blackjack and expect to get away with it! He didn’t. But Euan seemed to have some problem of his own trying to close it out! He spent a long time on the springboard before finally going 21 up to win the

Men’s Singles Championship of the Club and to be the first time holder of the McKean Cup. In the Women’s Final Shermeen was soon on the “kitty” and playing with increasing confidence while Amira seemed to lose her characteristic sharpness from time to time and found herself under pressure. In the result Shermeen won the 2016 Women’s Singles Championship of the Club and earned the right to be the holder of the W A Rose Bowl. Gold to Euan, Silver to Melvin and Bronze to Edmund in the Men’s event as well as Gold to Shermeen and Silver to Amira in the Women’s event. Congratulations!
Inter-Club… Tanglin Club vs SCC friendly On November 19 we were guests of Tanglin Club for a Bowls friendly. It was arranged not much earlier but members responded well and there was a good turnout. The competition was keen and during the after match F&B Graham (TC) quite bravely announced the results for each rink but guests might perhaps be forgiven for not having heard or remembered the details not for want of attention but more for the F&B and the friendliness of the “Friendly” fixture. There was one thing though that was heard and remembered. It was announced that Virginia had won a Bronze at the Champion of Champions competition! (See story above) Virginia is a member of both Clubs! Thanks to TC, its Bowlers, officials and staff for the Bowls, the competition on the Green and the F&B off the Green and at Tangles!
And Inter Section… Giles Roche Trophy This year’s competition was held on October 22 and the format was Section Play in 2 Sections, Group A and Group B, followed by Finals Play Offs for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings with a special Award for the Winner between Group A & Group B. As there were 12 Teams each Group drew 6 Teams. At the end of Section Play the Teams in Group A were ranked - GC, Balut, Rugby, Golf, Tennis, and Hockey and the Teams in Group B were ranked Cricket, Squash, Soccer, Darts, Billiards & Snooker and Bridge, both in descending order. In the Play Off for 3rd Place, it was Balut vs Squash and what a close match it was! In the end it was Balut for the Bronze with the score of 5-4. In the Play Off for 1st and 2nd Places, GC took on Cricket. Tension was high, the heads were tight, watchful eyes and cheering hands were on the Banks and yes, GC’s nerves held. They held on to their lead going into the last end for victory by 5 shots to 3 and the Gold! In the other Play Offs Tennis and Bridge were all square with 1 Shot difference each. Soccer contributed 7 for Group B but that wasn’t enough. 5 from Golf to add to the 2 from GC and 1 from Balut gave Group A the Group Awards by just 1 shot. The Final Results were Gold and Winner of the Giles Roche Trophy for 2016 - GC; Silver - Cricket; Bronze - Balut; Group Awards - Group A. Congratulations to all the Winners! SOCIAL “SHANGHAI NIGHT”
In the KBGC Triangular we played Royal Bangkok Sports Club on the following Saturday and on the following Sunday it was KBGC. This time the result was determined by Total Points won with 2 Points for a Rink Win, 1 Point for a Draw and Nil for a Loss. After such an inspiring start in the Interport it would have been too much of a disappointment if we had not done well. Yes, we managed to avoid the disappointment! And the Final Score? SCC 8, RBSC 4; SCC 9, KBGC 3; KBGC 8, RBSC 4 for a total of SCC 17, KBGC 11 & RBSC 8.
The season closed with an afternoon of Bowls followed by an evening of F&B and entertainment in the Gilmour Room on December 3. “Shanghai Night” began quietly. Some members turned out in fetching costumes, many accepted offerings of “Shanghai Sling” which they put down quite easily after some initial hesitation and were none the worse for it, and all were happy just to be there to take it all in. An orchestra was in attendance to strike the right note with music for the occasion playing instruments not often heard or seen. And when the orchestra was not playing Bob the Quiz Master took over with choice little nuggets of facts and figures. There was a draw with some 15 or more useful (and drinkable) prizes. One Rink (or Table as it is usually called) picked up most of the prizes, ah, but not the top prize of a new set of Bowls which was quickly bought off the winner! And the F&B? Only one way to describe it. The usual high SCC standard for an occasion such as the year end event. Thanks to the prize sponsors; the orchestra; the staff especially the F&B staff; our own hospitality member Bob and his subcommittee including Edmund, Ming Li, Shermeen and Michael to name a few, for a great event; to President Manu and CGCB Baljit for their presence; and to all section members for their support in the unavoidably shortened season that has come to a close.
HK 2016 Our 19 players and 1 cheerleader have just returned from 3 days of competition in Hong Kong! On Friday December 9 we played Kowloon Bowling Green Club in the Interport. The result was determined by aggregate shots across all 6 rinks of mixed Triples over 18 Ends with a time limit of 2 hours and 30 minutes. At the bell for Time Rosemary’s Team was down at the Head but the End was not completed yet! After some initial hesitation and not a few words of friendly dissent the End was played on and completed. SCC won the SCC v KBGC Interport and the KBGC Triangular all for the first time although SCC did win the SCC Triangular (with the same participating Clubs) in 2005. Congratulations & thanks to all the players! The SCC Triangular was inaugurated in 2002 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Club and the first Clubs which honoured us with their acceptance of our invitations were RBSC & KBGC. Since then RBSC and KBGC have in alternating years hosted their Triangulars. The SCC v KBGC Interport has been played since 2013 when KBGC hosted its Triangular. The Sphinxes Victorious again The 2016 season was a year of consolidation for the cricket section vis-a-vis our on-field exploits. SCC Sphinxes made us proud and shone through yet again by dominating the Master’s League again this year under the exemplary leadership of Andy Beer. This makes it two in a row for the defending champions. The Veterans League which has been running for 5 years was aptly renamed the ‘Masters’ this time around. It was conceptualised to give older players from the League and Saturday XI’s more end of year cricket in a serious but social format. The concept once again proved very popular with 22 players taking part across 5 games. This year saw the introduction of sub 40 year old players in allowing two only from each team in order to allow other clubs a better chance of putting together a full strength team. This proved a bonus for the SCC with Vishal Rathee and Kevin Robertson both making significant contributions to the team’s success. SCC Sphinxes put in a superb season and ended up winning all 5 games. The first game of the season against ANZA once again proved to be a defining match up and moment as it went down to the wire with the SCC requiring 10 runs off the last over being 9 down chasing 158. The team got across on the winning side by knocking off the runs from a no-ball and then proceeded to win the next 4 games comfortably to clinch the league.

Arun Vijayan deservingly bagged the honours of being the section cricketer of the year as his all round performance - 27 wickets and 216 runs for the 1st team stood out as one of the best performances. Dene Border was awarded Section person of the year for his untiring efforts as Captain of Cricket. The Cricket Section AGM unanimously reinstated the section committee to do the honours under the able leadership of Hugh Darwell as Convenor and Dene Border leading as the Captain of Cricket. Here’s wishing them and the section committee all the very best in 2017.

Pot Games! It was a triumphant moment when SCC won the darts game against The Tanglin Club (TC) on 3 October. It was indeed a competitive afternoon for most of our Section Darters as they represented our Section with the foremost aim to ‘play to win’. This group of Section Darters had been training conscientiously and they brought back the trophy to our Section.
Thank you players – Sebastian, Graham Wilson, Paul Murphy, Mo Yasin, Mohan Balagopal, Sally Brenchley, Shelia Nagiah, Lynn Wilson, for making time to compete on a Saturday afternoon and represent the Section and its motto which is ‘we play to win’. Annual Interport Game with RSC
GOLF ACTIVITIES Some 19 section members embarked on a coach tour to Kuala Lumpur on 10 November to play Royal Selangor Club (RSC), in the annual interport game. The match was hosted by RSC at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club in Shah Alam, Malaysia. The inclement weather was not too helpful in playing good golf, though most of the flights did manage to finish their 18 holes after a rain stoppage for an hour and a half. Though we knew we were soundly beaten, RSC was most diplomatic not to want to post the score, because of the weather. They hosted us to a hearty dinner after the game at their Kiara Annexe clubhouse and as traditions demanded, plied us with copious amounts of alcoholic beverages. After the night’s revelry, it was a challenge for us to play our second game at the Seri Selangor Golf Course the next day. It was a long and difficult course, so when the rains poured in the early evening, the players were more than happy to call it a day and adjourn to a fine Chinese restaurant for another round of hearty eating and drinking.

We had our third game at the Palm Villa golf course in Kulai, Johor. This time, the weather was cooperative and we had a good round of golf and an equally good dinner before heading back. The tour was followed by a social round of golf among section members at the Jurong Country Club on 25 November. This course is slated to be returned to the State at the end of the year and this caused a high demand for its use. It was fortunate that some of our section members who are also JCC members managed to book the course for 12 flights which we had no difficulty in filling participants for. The game was followed by a sumptuous dinner at the club’s private dining room where members enjoyed Roast Lamb and Spanish Suckling Pigs. There were some prize-giving and lucky draws to round up the night. At the point of writing, the section looks forward to its upcoming Christmas Game & Party and the inter-club match against Changi Golf Club in January.

SCC Hockey ends year with more medals and awards Hockey Section AGM The very popular Intekhab Khan was elected as the new convenor under whose trusted stewardship SCC Hockey will set sail again in search of glory in the year ahead. The work of his predecessor Krishnasamy Rajaram and his committee has been remarkable and Rajaram was rightly awarded the ‘Section Member of the Year’ at the Hockey Annual Awards night. Martijn de Blauwe is the new Secretary and Mathavan Devadas retained his position as Treasurer as did Sean Chen and Pauline Appleyard in the capacity of Men’s and Ladies’ Social Secretary respectively. Chris Jones is the new Club Captain following long time Club Captain Jamie Chambers’ relocation to Hong Kong. Former Welsh international Rhian Frizler is the new Ladies’ Captain taking over from Catherine Wheeler who is going to be busy getting back into shape and ready for another season of hockey after giving birth to her third child that same week. Liu Shiying or Shingo as she’s better known continues as JSM Rep following a solid year playing an integral part in converting almost 80% of juniors who were up for conversion to Ordinary Members. Four new members rolled up their sleeves to serve as committee members – former Hong Kong international Katherine Mountain, financial guru Subhas Nathan, lawyer Jamal Siddique Peer and former 2nd XI captain and Men’s MVP winner Patrick Meredith. At the Awards Night that ensued, SCC’s 4th XI men won the coveted ‘Team of the Year’ award and their captain Siva Subramaniam picked the Men’s ‘MVP Golden Ball’ for 2016. New arrival Amanda Bird won the ‘Ladies’ MVP’. In total 13 awards were handed out in a night which also bid goodbye to Jamie Chambers, Men’s 1st XI captain Mark Hollingsworth (Ollie) and goal machine Toby Simpson. The event was graced by the Club’s General Committee and Chairman Games Control Board Sher Baljit Singh was the Guest of Honour.
Women’s Hockey Liga This was the third edition of the tournament as SCC has been the only winner of the same. However, Dreams Hockey took the
The Section also entered two teams into the annual SHF Indoor Hockey Carnival that took place on the last weekend of November. The men’s team was made up of a blend of youth and experience, was captained by Wayne Blazejczyk with his experience of both playing and managing international indoor hockey. The boy’s team was made up of the rising U19 stars within the Section. The men’s team secured three wins with the boy’s team earning several hard fought draws – the boy’s team in particular were unlucky not to earn more points from several close and exciting games. The men’s team topped their group, whilst the boy’s team finished fourth. Unfortunately for supporters of the Club, the two SCC teams would face off in the quarter-finals. The match was a closely fought affair, with both goalkeepers busy early on – however as the clock ticked down, a couple of quick goals by the men’s team led to the boy’s team being knocked out of the tournament. The men’s team progressed to the semi-final where they faced a team they narrowly beat in game one. With no goals in regular time, the match was decided by shootouts – unfortunately the SCC’s finishing radar was slightly off with only one goal to three, and the team was denied a place in the finals. Picking themselves up from the disappointment, the team regrouped against a team made up of mostly SRC players. Saving the best for last, the team put three goals (having also lost their semi-final on shootouts and being undefeated until then) and secured a memorable bronze win. Congrats to all the players involved and thanks to the organisers for putting on the event.
Toby Simpson Farewell The 3rd and 4th XI’s played an entertaining ‘friendly-ish’ match of grass hockey on the Padang to end their respective seasons – the match also served as a farewell to Toby Simpson. Played over the course of three rather gruelling 25-minute sessions (end of season fitness training, anyone?), the 3s were the winners of the game, although most agreed that the real winner was the hockey itself. The social that followed at The Courtyard, the Men’s Bar and finally Stumps, demonstrating the pure pleasure of playing a good old-fashioned game of grass hockey in front of the Clubhouse yet again and then discussing all the best goals and misses over a beer! A moment to remember for all especially Toby, who was presented with a framed shirt just in case he couldn’t actually remember it all.
Conclusion Although the Section could not repeat the feat of double top tier titles this year, the amount of medals won by teams across the Section is considerable and the scent of a medal finish is well and truly in the air in this part of the Padang skies. Looking forward to a highly entertaining 2017 and the Hockey Section would like to take this opportunity to wish all a very Happy New Year! JAN / FEB 2017 THE PADANG

SCC Academy U12s: Winners are grinners
BEST YEAR YET FOR SCC RUGBY ACADEMY Anticipation was running high for this year’s SCC Rugby Academy’s Robert Walters 7s and Touch Tournament after the disappointment of last year’s tournament cancelled due to haze. This time the conditions couldn’t have been more perfect, the Padang looked magnificent and 1,400 junior rugby players (aged 5 to 16) and Touch players from all junior rugby clubs in Singapore prepared for battle. The tournament is played the weekend before the SCC 7s with the two top teams in each age group playing their finals during the 7s weekend, an incentive, if any, were needed to reach their best.

After a weekend of tough games and surviving two hours of rain, SCC Rugby Academy had plenty to cheer about as seven of our teams made it to the Cup Finals with four teams victorious. Congratulations to U8 SCC Tigers, U9 SCC Tigers (who remain unbeaten in the last 6 tournaments), U12 SCC Tigers (tasting victory again after their Cup win in the KL Saracens 10s last March) and U14 SCC Gold (building on their cup win at the recent TRC Cup). Runners up at the SCC Academy 7s included the SCC Touch U10, U5 SCC Lions and U11 SCC Lions. Whatever the silverware on the day the Academy is proud of all our players who performed their best on the Padang.

After our 7s tournament, the big boys took to the field with Academy players watching as many of their coaches lifted the Plate, including Mike Oliver (U14 Coach), Ben Turner (U13), Nick Bromley (U5, U10, U13), Kevin Loo (U16), Herman Wepener (U14), SCC Academy Director of Rugby Suhaimi Amran and Academy Head Coach Bryan Lim were also in action for a visiting team. We are honoured to have such high performing players from the SCC Rugby Section among our Academy coaching team. A big thank you to all the Academy sponsors, coaches and parents who work beyond the call of duty to make the rugby community in Singapore thriving (and growing).

The Pads - a large squad to manage
PADS HIT THE BAR IN PHUKET‌ AGAIN In early November, the Padangtiques took on Hong Kong Football Club in Phuket for the Henrik Lorenz Trophy. This was the 10th of such celebration and although the joy came from Friday’s beach games with the inspirational children, the football was once again laced with frustration. Fate seemed to deliver its conclusion with heartless mirth as the Club went down 3-1 despite hitting the wood work three times (as in 2015 and 2014), with another attempt beautifully saved and yet another cleared off the line. Bodies were collapsing through injury and fatigue but it was another heroic effort which admirably stayed faithful to the principle of playing every Pads who was available for selection. Credit to Manager Dan Shepherd and Captain Glyn Vince for
that and to HKFC for some high-quality goals and tremendous sportsmanship throughout.
SCC TIGERS An under-strength SCC Tigers started their new season with 5-2 loss to the defending champions Purple Monkeys. But a 5-0 win over the Barbarians who took three points from the Club last season, got things back on track. They rounded off the opening month by thrashing the Vikings (three shots hitting the bar and two more producing great saves) 1-1. In November, a 2-0 win over St Davids of Wales was then followed by a commendable draw against those Purple Monkeys which puts the Tigers in a good position to challenge for their title.

GILES ROCHE TROPHY INTER-SECTION BOWLS TOURNAMENT The Squash Section achieved their best ever result in the Giles Roche Inter-section Bowls Tournament, coming in a highly commendable fourth place! The event was held after the Club championship final was concluded that very same morning. Representing the section were: Stuart Whitehead, Eleanor Tan and Genevieve Gay. Not much hope was placed on the three novice players. After narrowly losing the first match, the team’s competitive spirit was ignited and with Devi’s expert coaching we begun an unexpected winning streak. The trio bowled all their competition away and eventually found themselves vying for the third/fourth placing. Despite being pipped at the post the team ought to take comfort in losing the third place to a team comprised of ex-National team players. Looks like we may have found some lawn bowling talents in the Squash Section! Till next year!

INTER-SECTION NETBALL On the 19 November 2016, the Inter-Section Netball competition was held. Captained by two squash committee members Bryden and Genevieve, they led 20 of the section’s junior members who came out in full force to represent Squash in the event. When we lost 0-5 in the first match, it became pretty apparent to everyone that we were not going to be anywhere close to winning subsequent matches or the tournament. Though we clearly lacked all forms of netballing skills, the juniors made up for it (more so than not) with their copious amounts of enthusiasm and stamina. Notwithstanding, it can be safely said that very few of us will be going anywhere near a netball court anytime soon. It was extremely delightful watching the juniors build friendships and teamwork throughout the afternoon and interacting with members from the other sections. The participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to the Netball Section for organising the event.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2016 This year we played both Men’s and Women’s competition.There were some good and entertaining matches in the earlier rounds and a couple of upsets. Even though we were missing our number one player Vivian, the young players kept the standard high. It was also pleasing to get enough players to run a ladies draw. And what was even better was that the Ladies Trophy was finally found after being missing for many years.

2016 SCC TENNIS ACTIVITIES: AT A GLANCE NEW COURTS AND NEW LIGHTS What a difference a new surface makes! Thank you to all who made it happen. The change from (real) grass to artificial turf has certainly improved the playability of the court, especially after rain. The balls also now bounce with better predictability. There are also fewer ‘rest days’ for the court when maintenance is required. On the multi-purpose courts, the much-improved lighting means that tennis can be played even into the evening, when the courts are available. If you haven’t already played on the courts, what are you waiting for?
Several of the junior players have been doing very well in the local and international scene and it is great to see them grow with us. If you would like to try out for any of our teams, please contact the respective tennis captains via Ken Ang (ken.ang@scc.org.sg).
TENNIS TOURS We had two tennis tours this year, all expertly led and organised by Gilbert Ng (Mr Tennis). Over the Labour Day weekend, we visited HK Cricket Club and Kowloon Cricket Club. In midNovember, a group of players from the section made a visit to the Royal Bangkok Sports Club and British Club for a weekend of serves and volleys. On both tennis tour occasions, the tennis and the camaraderie were great, making the after-match parties very exciting.

SOCIAL TENNIS AT THE CLUB The Last Friday of Month tennis social and light bites continues to be an evening where players from the section mix and play. In September, we hosted Keppel Club for an evening of tennis which lasted late into the night. It was a wonderful opportunity to pit our skills with other tennis-crazy players in Singapore. All section members are welcome to the Friday social which starts from 5pm and ends around 7pm, or later, for those who can’t get enough.
COMPETITIONS Some of the teams had to contend with a smaller pool of players due to the exit of some sports members. That said the Men’s A were semi-finalists of the inter-club doubles league. 2016 continues to be a successful season for the ladies teams at SCC, kudos to the players for all their efforts as the competition level keeps getting higher. The Ladies A & B teams started off the season winning the champion titles in both divisions of the singles league and the Ladies A were also runners-up in both interclub doubles tournaments (June and Sept/Oct). It is great to see a mixture of adults and juniors players on the court. We are sure these match-play opportunities add to the experience of the juniors.
The Tennis AGM & Annual Dinner took place on 28 November 2016. It was a great opportunity to recap the year and to mingle with tennis friends off court.
