2nd staff inter-club bowling 2015 26 January 2015

1st Runner-Up: Singapore Cricket Club

G

o! SCC Go! Go! SCC Go! Go! SCC Go! Go! Go!”

The SCC Bowling Team, comprising Mohd Alias, Stanley Lim, Kassim Maideen, Al-Malek Bin Omar and Suzie Chan, gave a final cheer before the 2nd Staff Inter-Club Bowling Competition held on 26 January 2015 at the Orchid Country Club roll-off.

The SCC team and Chairman of Establishment Subcommittee, Mr Parasuram Krishnan

Not only did the SCC Team have great times bonding with each other, motivating one another and building lasting friendships, they finally got to reap the reward of their hard work and made the ‘SCC Dream’ come true!

Tapping on the SCC Workplace Health Promotion Programme, under the Health Promotion Board, the team started their regular training as soon as announcement of the competition was made by the Club HR Group in September 2014. Despite having to train at different times because of their different working shifts and coming from different departments, the team persevered and intensified their training as the competition date drew near. Thanks to the great support of the General Manager, Mr Nigel Stearns; and the respective Heads of Department; and with the help from the SCC Human Resources Team to co-ordinate the trainings and cheering them on at the competition, the SCC Bowling Team put in their best efforts and with much delight, emerged 1st Runner-Up amongst teams from ten participating clubs! Hip! Hip! Hooray!

Kudos to our SCC Team!

CLUB OPERATING HOURS ON 11 APRIL 2015 Please be informed that the Annual Staff Party will be held on Saturday, 11 April 2015 and the Club will be closed from 4.00pm onwards. Normal operations will resume on Sunday, 12 April 2015.

Members and guests gather to mark the centenary of the Singapore Mutiny Article: Steve Thompson

T

hirty-two Club members and guests attended an event on Saturday 14 February to mark a significant date in the history of the Club — the centenary of the Singapore Mutiny in February 1915. The event was organised by General Committee member Brian Farrell and Club member Jeya Ayadurai, with a contribution by Club member Steve Thompson. The day began at 8am with a splendid breakfast in the Gilmour Room. After an introduction by Brian on the global background and impact of the Singapore Mutiny, Steve spoke on the 13 Club members who were killed during the mutiny, who are remembered on the bronze plaque in the lobby of the Club.

FEATURE

From the Gilmour Room, Jeya took us on a walking tour of the Padang, including plaques to honour those who died during the mutiny at Victoria Memorial Hall and St Andrew’s Cathedral. We then boarded a coach, passing Fort Canning and Outram Park (including the site of the prison where many mutineers were executed), and stopping at Hyderabad Road, off Alexandra Road. This was the site of Alexandra Barracks, where the mutiny was sparked, and the bungalow of the commanding officer, which was besieged by the mutineers. Finally, the coach took us to Tanglin Barracks, now Dempsey Village, where much of the action took place in 1915. Fittingly, we retired for a light lunch and refreshments at Dempsey Field, the Club’s second sports location. Why fittingly? Because in February 1915, our fields were the rifle range of the Singapore Volunteer Corps, without whom all might have been lost. It was a wonderful morning and a fitting tribute, thanks to Brian and Jeya. Jeya and the attendees,

WINES OF THE MONTH March - April

Rosso Toscana Camponovo 2013 Tenuta di Sesta

Rosso di Montalcino DOCG 2012 Tenuta di Sesta

Young and fresh wine a strong character linked to the Montalcino territory: it originates from the union of two local varieties, Sangiovese (90%) and Colorino (10%), which blend together giving at first the structure and then the intense color. After ageing in stainless steel vats, it shows a ruby red color, hints of red fruit on the nose and fresh and balanced flavor.

It should be drunk young, although it does last with ageing. It shows an intense ruby red colour and reveals all its exuberance with notes of red fruit and blackberry on the nose. On the palate, it is pleasing and well-orchestrated with good length and without aggressive tannins. $62.00 per bottle | $13.50 per glass

$50.00 per bottle | $11.00 per glass

Airlie Bank Pinot Grigio 2012 Bright straw-green; the fragrant, flowery bouquet has the clear-cut apple, pear and citrus flavours that flow into the palate; has zest and lift, and is a particularly good example of grigio. $52.00 per bottle | $11.50 per glass

Airlie Bank Sparkling NV Pinot Chardonnay Aromas of citrus fruits and subtle apricot, complemented by a doughy, bready complexity. Fresh and vibrant with a focused palate structure of apple blossom and citrus characters with complex brioche notes. $52.00 per bottle

Sacred Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2014 A lifted rich aroma with a medley of tropical fruits notes, figs, guava gooseberry, lychee and passion fruit interplay with citrus zest florals. The palate has lovely depth, weight and richness that build to crescendo on the finish. The aftertaste has citrus zest flavours and excellent minerality. $50.00 per bottle | $10.50 per glass

Sacred Hill Pinot Noir 2013 A rich crimson colour. Delicious cherry plum and cranberry mingle with smokey spiced oak notes. The palate is richly weighted with firm leathery tannins and seductive, lingering spice flavours.

Airlie Bank Pinot Noir 2012/2013 Dark cherry and spice aromas with underlying earth and for-est floor characters. Medium bodied with lively red cherry, plum and spice flavours. The palate has a lingering finish and fine tannin structure. $52.00 per bottle | $11.50 per glass

Sileni Cellar Selection Pinot Gris 2013 The Cellar Selection Pinot Gris has classic aromatic peach flavours along with beautifully balanced acidity and a long finish. It is just off-dry and well suited to seafood, white meats and Asian food styles. Drink it young or cellar for three to four years. $50.00 per bottle | $10.50 per glass

Sileni Cellar Selection Pinot Noir 2013 The Cellar Selection Pinot Noir has concentrated black cherry and dark berry aromas which follow through to the palate where dark berry-fruit and cherry flavours are supported by soft tannins. This is a ripe and deeply coloured food wine, designed for early drinking but capable of cellaring for three to five years. $50.00 per bottle | $10.50 per glass

2015 Year of the Wooden Goat Feng Shui & Astrology Talk 11 February 2015

D

eveloped over 3000 years ago in China, Feng Shui is an ancient art and science which is based on a philosophical system in harmonising oneself with the surrounding environment. It is still relevant today as evidenced by the enthusiastic turnout at the Year of the Wooden Goat Feng Shui and Astrology Talk organised by the Club. Members in attendance enjoyed a fascinating evening gaining practical tips and fresh insights into what the new year has in store from Master Astrologer, Esther Teh. Well-versed in Feng Shui and Bazi, Esther readily dished out useful tips on how to activate the individual Wealth Sectors in one’s house or property. One of the highlights of the talk included the sharing of the 12 Chinese Astrological Animal Signs in 2015 and how to emerge a winner! Armed with auspicious dates and directions for 2015, Members can look forward to sharing them with friends and family and having a prosperous and bountiful year ahead.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION 27 February 2015

T

he Chinese New Year Celebrations at SCC kicked-off with an auspicious bang with the arrival of the spectacular ‘Twin Lions’. Prancing through the main entrance and making their way around the Club the Lions wowed Members before performing their jaw dropping acrobatic climax on high pedestals.

This was then followed by the traditional “Bian Lian” – the well-loved traditional face changing and acrobatic performance originating from China’s Sichuan province had many watching the performer change masks in lightning quick succession with a flourish of the arms and a twist of the head. Other fringe activities included palm reading and our first “sugar painting” performance. The ancient craft uses melted sugar as ink with the sugar painting master creating intricate designs that were as pleasing to the eyes as they were to the taste buds. The celebration continued into the evening with a rousing band performance by “MSG” that rocked the night away.

he 7th SCC Soccer Sixes saw an earlier start in the year than usual but this did not stop the success of this fantastic Tournament.

A total of 16 Open,16 Masters and 4 Youth teams participated in a two day fiesta of football with teams from Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia and Cambodia. With the assistance of Creative Lighting Asia, the Sixes Committee were able to bring ex Man Utd and Leeds superstar, Lee Sharpe as the 2015 celebrity, and he became an instant hit with the SCC members at the annual dinner. The CLA all-stars team which included Sharpe, PJ, Singapore legend Alex Duric and SCC convenor Scott Starr went on to win the Masters Tournament against a star studded Club ITE team which had ex-Singapore internationals in Tong Hai Lim, Ratna Suffian and Sashi Kumar. The Open Category was a huge success and saw a superb entertaining finals between first time participants, Indonesian professional Kwarta FC played against the SCC First team. The finals had everything... goals, red cards, Matthew Zatto

extra time and penalties! Thankfully, the SCC team managed to win the trophy after some superb saves by Angelov. A very important part of the Sixes is providing an opportunity for proverbial youth players from the region. And we saw the Bali Sports Foundation, Phuket Football Home, Muhammadiyah Welfare Home, Phnom Pehn Crown Club and Youth Football Home compete throughout the weekend. A big thanks to the families who had housed these kids over the weekend. Your time, effort and kindness is very much appreciated by the committee. Finally I want to say a big thank you to the SCC Staff, SCC General Committee, the Sixes Committee Members, the Section Members for their support and last but not least the Sponsors for this Tournament; most notably to Tony Singh from Weston Corporation, Glyn Vince from Slade Global, the SCC and Asia Pacific Breweries, Eddie Tang from Creative Lighting Asia and Dirk Paulsen from Melchers and Co. This could not have happened without you all. See you in 2016!

reetings to all Members and hope everyone had a great start to the New Year!

The Billiards & Snooker Section had an eventful 2014 and we ended the year with a sumptuous Christmas lunch on 13 December 2014. The response was fantastic with about 40 Members turning up to enjoy the delicious roast beef and succulent ham with free flow of beer and black label. Thanks Rags for arranging such a wonderful lunch! We started our National Division 1 league game on 8 December 2014 and played our first game with Snooker Zone from Toa Payoh. The standard of this tournament was very high and to date, we are only at the halfway mark of the tournament with 2 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses. We are also proud to update that the current highest break in this tournament is held by our very own Peter Gilchrist who made a break of 102 on 12 January 2015 when we played an away game against Klassic ‘Le’ Noir. ur in-house bridge games are held every Monday at the Oval restaurant and are well attended by our bridge members and their guests. We have an average of six tables playing weekly. We look forward to having more Members coming to play bridge in the new year. So please come by and enjoy a relaxing game of bridge with us. We are hoping to start some courses with the SCBA (Singapore Contract Bridge Association) in the near future for Members who wish to polish their skills and arrange training sessions in bridge. We will keep Members informed of any new developments in this area. Talks are in progress with our reciprocal clubs in Hong Kong concerning a social trip to play with the Hong Kong Cricket Club (HKCC) and Kowloon Cricket Club. The date of the social trip will be announced at a later time. While the SCC Bridge Section has been invited to play in the Premier Bridge League, Members and those interested to join the game are to note that the Premier Bridge League games have not been finalised yet as the original organisers are relinquishing their role. The SCC Bridge Section however will take part when new organisers resume the planning. Lastly we would like to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous Chinese New Year.

y the time you read this, the new season will be underway having started earlier than normal in early February. We have had a number of new players joining the Club in the past few months creating more pressure for places than ever before. A decision was made at the end of last season to drop the Pumas team in 2015 due to the constant struggle to field a team throughout last season. Unfortunately too many players were only sporadically available. For the 2015 season, we have approximately 110 players competing for 66 slots across the six league teams. If you add in the 40 or so players in the Saturday XI squad, we have about 150 active players in the Section which is a very healthy place to be. It means that consistent performances as well as regular attendance at training will be critical to ensure selection. Although we lose the Padang in mid March, we are excited to play at Dempsey on the newly laid wicket with improved drainage in the outfield. At our traditional season opener Captains Cocktails on 23 January, new captains were announced for all teams except

Saturday XI. Our congratulations to all of them. I would also like to extend a huge vote of thanks on behalf of the Cricket Section to all outgoing captains: Rob Hands, Richard StapleyOh, Nick Power, Will Tipping, Vishal Rathee, Sukanti Sen and Stuart Brown. All of them have put their heart and soul into captaining their respective teams over several years and we are indebted to them for their commitment. Captains for the 2015 season are as follows: Lions – Andre De Lange Cougars – Nick Dorney Tigers – Arjun Kakar Cheetahs – Vipul Aggarwal Panthers – Clem Cull Jaguars – Dustin Yates Saturday XI – Hugh Darwell Best of luck to everyone, we are very hopeful of bringing back some silverware.

abuhay!!! Darts Team Off to Manila A total of 11 Darters from the Section flew into Manila for a friendly tournament with the team represented by the National Darts Council of Philippines from 2 to 4 November 2014. The games were held at the Tres Marias De Malate Darts Pub in Manila, Philippines. The objectives of the games were to foster cross-country friendship, as well as to facilitate the exchange of skills and knowledge of the game of darts. Players from both sides merged to form 2 teams, namely, Team A and Team B. The format of play covered Ladies’ Double, Men’s Double, mixed gender teams and Four-Player One Game Play-Off. Our SCC Darters gained from the opportunity to partner and play alongside some of the best darters in the Philippines. There were lots of exchanges at all levels and the interactions at the games were good. Both sides benefited from one another. We played with the Malaysia Open Champion Darter who was from Philippines and many others who have represented their country. We appreciate that some of the Philippines Darters travelled considerable distances to meet and play at the games. Special thanks go out to Eugene Pioquinto, Convenor Fathima who made a lot of interactions with the National Darts Council of Philippines President, Logie Estacio for his presence and support throughout the three days and Errol Magtubo, the team Captain, for facilitating the games. The Section Darters had a wonderful time and fostered great friendship with the Philippines Team. Their hospitality was simply marvelous.

It was a night to remember as it was our year end party to thank our Darts Section Members for all their support. We had 40 Section Members in attendance. The evening started out with ice-breaker games and it was truly well taken by our Members, it was ‘Match the Poker Cards’ which had everyone hunting around for one of the same kind. The one game which we will always remember was ‘Dancing on a Newspaper’ with a partner and the paper gets folded to the smallest size. We had a hidden talent – a headstand by Zoher Motiwala who took away the stand. Everyone applauded and supported him…truly remarkable. A big thank you to President Mr Mohan J Bhojwani, our Deputy President Mr Baljit Singh and our past president Colonel Guru for attending the event. 2 Golf Section Members took part in the Annual Golf Game between Changi Golf Club (CGC) and SCC on 25 January 2015.

CGC hosted the golf tournament and SCC catered the beverages and sumptuous dinner which was organised by Vincent Ho, our Section Treasurer. We had an enjoyable Sunday golf on one of the toughest courses in Singapore and enjoyed the company of our dearest friends from CGC. The CGC Committee and their Members were great hosts and they arranged for Terry Mortimer and his band to entertain us while we were savouring our Soup Kambing and Black Label in a Hawaiian inspired setting. On 12 February, the Golf Section will be organising a Social Night event at the Gilmour Room for our Section Members. The night is not just about drinking and dining, but to get inactive Members to be aware of our Section’s activities. Traditionally, we will have our Chinese New Year Golf at The Singapore Island Country Club-SIME Course on 3 March followed by a ‘LOH HEI DINNER’ at the SICC Bukit Function Room. Arrangements are being prepared by our secretary, Phillip Gwee. We look forward to a year of fantastic Golf filled with fun and fellowship. Padang Shield Games, with Singapore Recreation Club (SRC)

Hockey Section Welcomes Wave of Young Talent and Hope to Claim Padang Supremacy!

T

he momentous SG50 celebrations of mammoth proportions at the Padang this year is not the only big news at SCC.

The wave of young hockey talent continues to come through the doors of SCC with another 22 Junior Sports Members filling their applications. This is due largely to the Club’s collaboration with ACJC and The Hockey SCChool. The latter is the official hockey academy of the Club and it has over its 3 years of operations introduced close to 70 new junior members. With the young players coming into the Club in droves, the quality side of things has also headed north. Now there is real competition for places in the Men’s and Ladies’ 1st XI squads. The arrival of Ken Forbes, a former South African and Team GB International has lifted the standard of play in the Men’s teams. As a player/coach, Ken has been laying the foundation for a club wide adoption of globally accepted and tested tactics. Dividends have already been earned as SCC finished 3rd in the National Hockey League 1 after not featuring in the top 3 for the last 5 years. Meanwhile not to be outdone, the Ladies’ 1st XI will soon have an Olympian - one Lisa Walton in its roster. The Athens Olympics player from New Zealand is eager to strut her stuff and impart her hockey journey to the ladies and help SCC win the National Women’s League 1 title it last won in 2012.

42

THE PADANG

March / April 2015

Post season both these teams played our arch rivals and neighbours Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) in the Padang Shield matches. The Men’s game had to be abandoned after 12 minutes due to bad weather. Nonetheless it’s noteworthy that after an early scare from SRC’s national centre forward Ian Vanderput, SCC had the lion’s share of the proceedings and were well in the game. Meanwhile, the Ladies game was completed and they elegantly secured a famous and convincing 4-1 win over last season’s NWL 1 champions. This set of results mean SCC won the Padang Shield. Both these teams will be in competitive action in July onwards in the NHL and NWL. However to ensure that we are razor sharp come July, they will participate in the Hockey Liga, a popular pre-season 9-a-side competition from March till June. Currently our brave new juniors and old ones are donning the Club’s colours in the National Junior League Division 1 after winning the Girls Division 2 and finishing 3rd in the Boys Division 2 last season. Check with the Club if you need more hockey information or simply drop Coach Kanan a note at trueblueconsult@gmail.com and he will point you in the right direction.

Rocking into 2015

A

nd…we’re off! A massive year is upon the Section with a host of netballing activities ahead of us. Here are some of the things we’re up to.

SCC Friendly League and Mixed Social League We’re off to a roaring start with a larger league, more divisions and a much better competition. A competition organised by our very own ladies. With Rachael Bell taking the reins, the league is expanding having entered 3 ladies’ teams. The teams are off to a good start at the time of writing. The Kites are looking like a force to be reckoned with this year! Hawks are building up some good team work and communication in preparation for our main league in June. We also welcomed new team captains at the helm of our ladies’ teams – Alice Harkness as Hawk’s Captain, Lee-Ann Keats as Kite’s Captain and Fathima as Eagle’s Captain. The mixed league is also kicking off and it’s time to give our Men some of the limelight in the bi-monthly updates. The regular participation from the gents at SCC has seen the mixed team also grow from strength to strength. We’re ready to kick off another awesome season and hopefully bring back the trophy this time round. And to the regular faces making up our male contingent - Nick Power, Mike Burns and Paul Foster – you guys are awesome!

Captain’s Cocktails No better way to kick off the new year than with captain’s cocktails to hear from our wonderful captains, Anna and Katy. We’re looking forward to another brilliant social, following up from our Christmas party in December. The Section is definitely vibrant on and off the court! Friendlies & Tours There’s never too little time to squeeze in a friendly or two despite the busy netball schedule and our team is due to participate in another carnival soon with touring teams in town. We’ve got a superb team in place for this carnival and it’s looking to be a blast. Our first tour is also creeping up on us as the section looks to send a strong team across for the hallmark Bangkok tournament. Definitely hope to report good news in our next report! TRAININGS And we’re back to trainings which is not looking very boring at the moment? Who doesn’t love a bit of fitness to get those legs moving! As always, we welcome new players at any stage of the year. Trainings are on Wednesdays at the SCC courts at 7pm. Please email us at sccnetball@gmail.com to get in touch with the Section and register your interest.

Cararoo Christmas Party

R

eaching out through Rugby - SCC Growlers and SCC Rugby Academy support children’s rugby in the Philippines It all began a few years ago on the Manila 10s tour - during the tournament, some of the SCC Growlers were approached and asked if they had any kit to donate for local kids who wanted to play rugby. Nothing unusual in that, but this was pitch side and their donations literally consisted of the clothes off their backs. Happy to oblige, a couple of the Growlers stripped down as far as they dared sober and handed over boots, shirts, shorts and socks. The kids receiving them were under the guardianship of the Cararoo Foundation. Several years after that chance meeting, the foundation has become the unofficial charity of the SCC Rugby Academy and the Growlers - many of whom coach the junior players. Over the years we have sent several boxes full of clothes and sports equipment to them. Upon the arrival of the boxes our contacts at the charity, Arrabelle and Arlene (who both play for the Philippines women’s national rugby team), gather the children together for the grand unveiling. We always tell them not to get the kids too excited, it’s just some gear we no longer have use for, but we always get the same reply - opening the

boxes is like all their Christmases rolled into one. Many of us have seen photos of the kids in Manila wearing our children’s clothes and it’s great to see directly where your donation goes. The Cararoo Foundation is a non-profit organisation which primarily supports children in their education, “educating children out of poverty” as their website says. One of their key aims is to provide positive life experiences and opportunities, not only in their formal education but in afterschool activities, hence the need for sports equipment. Last Christmas, the Growlers organised a few in-team raffles. Up for grabs were a few lame prizes - but their generosity saw no bounds and together with money raised by the SCC Rugby Academy we were able to send over a substantial amount to fund a Christmas get together for the children. In return, we were rewarded when these photos of the kids enjoying their Christmas party arrived. Some of them had never been swimming before and they apparently went home full, smiling and wearing Growlers T shirts! For more information or if you’d like to make a donation to the Cararoo Foundation please visit www.cararoofoundation.com.au. The SCC Rugby Academy runs junior rugby training from the ages of 4 to 16 and meets on Saturday mornings at the SCC Dempsey ground, please contact info@sccrugbyacademy.com for further details. Into The Finals Saturday 31 January 2015 will see (or will have seen, by the time you read this) the culmination of almost 5 months of preparation for the Rugby Section’s top team. With new coaches, a new team line-up and a new title sponsor, the Societe Generale SCC Prems will face Bucks in the Semi-Final of the Cup. It has been a good season for the Section. near the top of the league tables. Jonty Kay’s Tankards have won the Championship for the second year in a row and will go on to face Oldham 1st XV in the Plate Final on 7 February. The Lions and Growlers look likely to hold the 1st and 2nd position in the Conference and battle it out for the Bowl. The Prems narrowly missed winning the Premiership title, but then 12 of their original starting line-up are injured, have left the country or are skiing over the finals weekend.

chipped through a cheeky grubber scoring between the posts only four minutes later. Oldham could only manage the one try twenty minutes into the first half.

Off the field the lads are also making an impact. “Sir Euan Kenworthy, K.C.M.G” was featured in January’s Expat Living with practical advice on how to furnish a black and white bungalow, a common issue vexing many Section Members (the full article is on the notice board).

Societe Generale Lions 10 January saw the grudge match of grudge matches when the Lions took on the Growlers in the annual derby. After much light hearted discussion on player selection, rolling subs and under 19 scrum rules, the rugby got underway. In a very close game, with some outstanding performances by Elliot Smith, Dutch Karl, TT among others, the Growlers’ utility 10 Casey Mee slotted the ball through the posts in the dying minutes to snatch the match for Cookie’s veterans.

Here are some highlights from last month. Societe Generale Prems A great start to January saw the Pete McFeely’s SCC Soc Gen Prems dispatch Bucks 28-17, beating last year’s finalists twice in a row. This was followed a week later with an absolutely exhausting win (38-7) against a fit and very much improved Saint Andrews on 17 January with a hat trick of tries by Gorgeous George Johnson, and lightning pace from James Robbo Robertson. Prems’ unbeaten record came to an end on 24 January with that match against the Wanderers. Societe Generale Tankards “The” match for Tankards was on 17 January. In what has to be one of the biggest upsets in the Championship for some time, the Tankards absolutely dismantled Oldham’s First XV in a masterclass of rugby last Saturday (38-17). Two minutes in and the Tankards executed a bulldozer of a maul off a line out, driving over the try line allowing lock Ben Chesney to touch down converted by Casey Mee. Twenty-nine minutes in Sam Flint followed suit with another conversion by the Mee Man, and a mere 3 minutes later, in a lovely chip and chase move from the halfway line saw Rob Adams add a third try to the Tankards tally. Salting the wound, the Mee Man himself

Into the second and it was Rob Adams followed by Dutch Karl slotting in two more tries. To their credit Oldham didn’t give up, grabbing two tries in the dying minutes of the match, but it was all over and they knew it.

Elliot Smith’s Lions returned to their winning ways on 17 January dispatching Oldham 3rds 36-0. A reminder, if any were needed about how much the Lions dominated that league. Societe Generale Growlers The historic win against the Lions was followed by another against Saint Andrews 2nd XV (31-29), albeit a bit of a nail biter. But that unbeaten record came to an end the following week against the Wanderers with a 29-17 loss despite cracking performances by ‘Man of the Match’ Welchy from the front row who hadn’t played a full 80 since the 1920’s. Special mention to Maaaartin and Duncan McGilligan who were magnificent and the punchy performance by former captain Marc Leavramont. A big welcome back also to Andy Bourke who between halves managed to run off his niggles and provide support for his 9. That loss did not set a trend. The Tuesday night match against Bedok 3rd XV saw another win for the Growlers (36-14), with fantastic support by the whole Section (especially maestro manager Mike Cosnett) in getting a team out. Overview of 2014

The PADS had a strong year culminating in the annual Henrik Lorenz Memorial game in Phuket against HKFC which they unfortunately lost. However worth remembering is the work done by the PADS at the Phuket orphanage (brainchild of the late great Henrik) and we will continue this every year and also bring kids from the orphanage to participate in our SCC Sixes tournament.

Sunday Tigers team won finishing third in the ESPZEN league under the leadership of Tim Digby, Ronnie Smollet and Richie Pugh. Aman and Vincent made sure our Thirds were running smoothly and enjoyed a successful year, which is always seen on a Wednesday night after the match. The Lions are consolidating their team with some new players to bolster their squad, Terk Lee runs a spirited Lions team assisted by Tony Moore and several others ensuring that Thursday night football is competitive and enjoyable.

The Youth Academy run by Owen Monaghan is running well and we are training and coaching the younger ones in the hope that they become our stars for the future. Owen has now added U12/ U14/U16 and U18 - the U18 are now playing as the tigers in the ESPZEN league. Owen and PJ Roberts managed our Sevens team in HK to participate in the HK Sevens and we did very well against the very strong opposition with the masters team losing in the final of the plate competition. We enjoyed this tournament immensely and look forward to participating again in 2015.

Tennis Updates

B

y all accounts, it looks like 2015 will be a busy year, especially given the flurry of SG50. For sports enthusiasts, one key event to look forward to is the Southeast Asian Games (SEA) Games which will take place from 5 to 16 June 2015. The scribe was just but a young girl when Singapore last hosted the SEA Games in 1993, but she remembers vividly the intense atmosphere of the tennis semi-finals and the cheering of the boisterous Indonesian, Filipino and Thai supporters. Several Members of the tennis section have represented Singapore in the past and surely will have stories to tell of their on-court battles. This may not be the Australian Open, but you can certainly expect the same fervour as the players battle it out for national glory.

Congratulations to Wee Khee Yen for being selected for the SEA Games Ladies' Squad ! AUSTRALIAN OPEN In early February, members of the tennis section gathered to watch the finals of the Australian Open finals at Stumps. Among all the four grand slams, the finals of the Australian Open have the ‘friendliest’ timings, so there we were sipping on our drinks, cheering for our favourite players, with the sun setting in the background. Join us as we watch the finals of the next grand slam, Roland Garros aka the French Open.

known to anaesthetise even the toughest of players. So, what is it like partnering in doubles? Does sisterly bickering get in the way? “It’s great as I run a lot less,” says Christine. “I keep the ball going and when the opportunity comes up, Clare finishes off the point! What I like best is that she will always have my back.” And what does Clare think? “She’s very calm and patient while I tend to be more hot-headed,” says Clare. Having her on court helps me to relax and keep my cool.” Father-Daughter Duo Here we have a formidable pair – Sher Baljit Singh, tennis warrior and Rehmat Johal, former national player and one of the top juniors in Singapore. Sunday mornings is the time where they often get together (along with Rehmat’s brother and sister) to have a hit and exchange notes. While Rehmat is playing in her matches, you won’t have to look too far to see Baljit watching the game closely. Lately, Baljit has started running marathons (thanks to the Jog & Jug sessions?) and in one of his recent marathons, Rehmat decided to put aside her books and ran the last 15km with him, The father-daughter duo “to save Pops” she said. Cheers to that! Baljit and Rehmat

COURT UpDATE Part of the grass courts of SCC (and other parts of SCC) will be used for Singapore’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, namely the National Day Parade. It is expected that this will take place from March – October (TBC). We ask for your support, patience and understanding during this time...think of it as the Club’s “National Service”! Tennis activities will take place at alternate venues. Standby for further updates.

VE IS IN THE AIR

Winning at tennis starts with love - love all, 30-love, 40-love, 6-love! Of course, the cynics would also have you believe that in tennis, love means nothing, However, some love matches have been made on the court, just think of Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf! Tennis really is nothing if you don’t have love for the game, and, in conjunction with the recent Valentine’s Day, we decided to feature just some of the many tennis players of the section who love the sport...and dare we say, eat, live and breathe tennis! Sister act Clare (21) and Christine Fong (24) took up tennis at a young age and have been very active in the junior tennis scene. Behind their demure looks, they can really pack a punch. Clare’s powerful all-round game is

Love for the sport Mr Choo Cheok Hai was Men’s captain of the tennis section for several years in the 70s and 80s and can often be seen close-by the tennis courts at the club. He is almost like the section’s walking archive! With little persuasion, he will share with you the heydays of the tennis section where players would be out in full force on the rows of tennis courts on the Padang, playing vigorously before the sun set. And the numerous on-court coups pulled off in the interclub tournaments! Lifestyles and work schedules have changed over the years, making it a bit tougher for the working crowd to play before sunset, however, the gallantry of the Men, Women and juniors who train and play their guts out remains. That aside, let’s not forget the people over the Mr Choo Cheok Hai years who have committed their time and efforts to play, and more importantly, organise activities for and on behalf of the club - convenors, captains, coaches, sports executives, supporters and others behind the scenes. It certainly must be love for the sport that keeps them going!
