10th Sports Awards Night The Club is honoured to soon celebrate its 10th SCC Annual Sports Awards on Friday, 7 April at The Padang Restaurant. Our sportsmen and sportswomen from all Sections will convene for an evening of well-deserved recognition of their participation and contribution to sports at SCC. Awards will also be presented to those who have made significant contributions to their Section. SCC Support Network SCC will mark her 165th anniversary this year. Our eminent position would not be possible without strong and efficient management and administrative support which has to be regularly reviewed to ensure it remains effective, efficient and relevant. We have been fortunate to have on board our interim General Manager, Alan Jones, who was tasked to review our management structure and administration support. We are pleased to report several initiatives to streamline management have been implemented. These include but have not been limited to reviewing and implementing cost cutting; reviewing staffing where ten full-time positions have been combined and/or eliminated; the estimated manpower savings for 2017 are $173,000. A revamp of existing policies, work flow and new policies implemented are aimed at improving efficiency and productivity club-wide. Most importantly, it is done with a view to enhance member experience at the SCC. Alan has agreed to stay on until a proper replacement GM is found. We are actively looking for a permanent replacement. Bridge Section… A Growth Story It is pleasing to note the growing popularity of Bridge at the Club. It has been one of the fastest growing sections. Formed in July 2012 with 24 founding members, they now have 67 members. Beginners and intermediate clinics have attracted both new and current members to join the section. Weekly Bridge evenings are held every Monday at the Victoria Room and members are most welcome to join them.
SCC in the Civic District We are pleased to report that preliminary discussions were held with key personnel of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) and the Esplanade Theatres on the Bay to review partnership opportunities for the mutual benefit of SCC Members and the organisations within the Civic District. We are deeply thankful to Mr. Kenny Ting, Director of the ACM, who kindly volunteered to lead a tour of the “Port Cities” exhibition for SCC Members and their guests. Archiving Our History A project to better archive SCC’s rich history is being re-initiated. The original project, started some years ago, produced a brochure of SCC’s art collection which is available at the Member Services Desk. We also have archived copies of past ‘The Padang’ magazines in the Reference Cabinet at the Men’s Bar. Let us hope in time that the SCC may be able to present itself as a museum showcasing its rich history. Annual General Meeting Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Tuesday, 25 April at the Clubhouse. I strongly encourage Members with eligible voting rights to participate in the Club’s electoral process for the voting in of your new General Committee and the general business tabled at the AGM. Chairman, Marketing & Communications Subcommittee
The work of the Marketing & Communications Subcommittee (MSC) revolves around marketing of the Club and timely communications to members which include the bi-monthly magazine, annual report, weekly email blasts, sports updates, announcements and the Club’s website. These are only a few amongst a myriad of communication channels to our members. We also handle souvenirs which are exclusive to SCC. We have expanded our readership base of the magazine which in turn brings in more advertising revenue. Our aim is to eventually make the magazine self-funding and we will get there as revenues from advertising and sales of souvenirs increase steadily. If you are interested to advertise your business or service in ‘The Padang’ magazine, please contact the Marcom department. Advertising rates can be found in the magazine. Flipping through the pages of the magazine, you may observe a fresh layout, especially in the F&B and Social Events sections, which makes for an easier read. Notably, food styling and photography of dishes prepared by our skilled chefs have been one of the main areas that have undergone a much needed revamp. The team has thoughtfully ensured design elements including font, colour scheme and visuals are carefully selected for your optimal reading pleasure. Members may also have noticed the eye-catching covers of the magazine in recent months.
In the cards for the future is an interactive touch screen display that would allow members to gather information and activities of the Club at terminals installed in strategic places within the Clubhouse. This is meant to complement our existing website and would be useful for members present in the Club without access to a computer. The MSC comprises of Dr. K. U. Menon, Stafford Bagot, Daniel Fitzpatrick and Jonathan Leow who have lent their expertise and invaluable guidance to the team. We are fortunate to have a very talented Marcom team formerly headed by Chovin Ong. Recently appointed Financial Controller, Gow Hui Yian, now heads the team of three ladies - Yani Saaban, Hazel Mok and Sharon Francis. Your feedback is essential for continued improvements as we push forth in our immersive and collaborative efforts to bring you enhanced marketing and communications strategies and plans. On the souvenirs front, we have introduced new cotton polo shirts in dark navy and green and these have been wellreceived by members with calls for other colours to be added to the range. For the first time, we have these shirts in children’s sizes to cater for the young ones. We have also introduced teddy bears wearing a smart jacket with the SCC logo. These make for a super gift for the children of our members and guests. Back by popular demand are the corkboard coasters and placemats with historical images of the Club printed on them. These are good souvenir items to give to your friends or visiting guests. We are now in the process of updating the Club’s history book. Our aim is to bring it up to date with significant milestones and events added from where it left off in 2002. Also in the works is the production of a video of the Club with focal points including but not limited to sporting activities and interviews with long-serving and established members. This video can be employed as a useful marketing tool for SCC.

Recent Events Introduction to Yoga 18 January 2017
Members spent a blissfully relaxed evening in a variety of yoga poses winding down after a day’s work. The ‘Introduction to Yoga’ class held on 18 January at the Gilmour Room was aimed at teaching proper and effective ways of strengthening the body through this age-old practice. Members and guests embarked on a gastronomic journey on a leisurely Saturday afternoon with SCC’s Senior Sous Chef, Vik. Chef Vik demonstrated his flair for the culinary arts by whipping up an elegant and exquisite 3-course modern French and Japanese meal. All present were engaged in his masterful cooking techniques and had an opportunity to sample his wonderful creations. SCC ushered in the year of the Fire Rooster during its Chinese New Year celebration on 3 February. Members and guests gathered at the Courtyard to watch the traditional acrobatic lion dance performance atop poles which drew plenty of cheers and applause. The ever popular face-changing performance to the beat of quick and dramatic music wowed members and guests. Other fringe activities such as the ancient art of palm reading as well as the captivating art of rainbow calligraphy provided entertainment for all. The performance by Tokyo Square added to the festive atmosphere at the Main Lounge where the party continued into the night.

SCC ‘OSCARS’ AND NEW SPORTS PROGRAMMES The Club will honour the outstanding achievements of SCC’s sportsmen and sportswomen for their remarkable sports performances in 2016 at the 10th SCC Annual Sports Awards on 7 April 2017. This ceremony aims to honour and recognise the commendable sportsmanship and contributions towards our 13 Sports Sections. It also gives me great pleasure to announce that we also celebrate the 165th anniversary of this grand dame. Members are warmly invited to attend this very special occasion. The second level of the Club will be reserved for this commemorative event. A popular live band is set to rock the night; cocktails galore will be flowing; a delicious buffet spread will be laid for feasting; and, for the first time, the awards ceremony will be screened live. CHRISTMAS PARTY We had a wonderful party at The Padang Restaurant on 16 December. There were delicious Christmas fare and prizes galore – all organised through the tireless efforts of Sunita Kapoor. The mood was so festive that the dancing started well before Convenor Tony’s welcome speech. The band, MSG, hit the ‘sweet spot’ with their great renditions of timeless favourites. We have already booked The Padang Restaurant for the 2017 bash on 15 December!
IA CHRISTMAS PAIRS TOURNAMENT Our thanks go to IA Balut Convenor Prekash Singh for organising a splendid event. There was excellent Indian ‘makan’ and numerous prizes. IN-HOUSE BALUT NIGHT The first in-house event of 2017 was held on 17 January. We had a great turnout of over 30 players. A special welcome was given to new members, Dr. Shane Lee and his wife, Jean. Victoria Brooker, a relative of the Convenor currently on a teaching assignment in Indonesia, was the single guest for the evening. Determined to make the most of beginner’s luck, she achieved an incredible three baluts in one game! The overall winner of the night and recipient of a bottle of Chivas Regal was Fahmi Hassanbai with a total of 679 points.

2017 is here and we will be sure to keep you posted on our events as they unfold. Our festive Chinese New Year dinner for our members was held recently. The traditional ‘Lo Hei’ party was celebrated in February. The Singapore Snooker League has just begun and we are fielding two teams – Division 1, and for the first time, a Division 5 team. We have not had much success but we just started. Division 1 played three games of which they won one and lost two. Division 5 played one game and unfortunately, lost. More will be reported in the next issue of ‘The Padang’. Two of our members – Glen Yeo and Peter Gilchrist represented Singapore to play in the Adelaide Open in the first week of February. The results of which will be announced later. We hosted Penang Sports Club when they visited us in February for our interport game. This will be reported in the next issue so do look out for it.

Fours by virtue of our ranking in the Asia Pacific Championships held the year before. Though wins were few and far between, we did manage some surprising results over the two weeks. The Ladies’ Fours caused a huge upset on opening day with a convincing win for the host nation and eventual Bronze medalists New Zealand. The Ladies’ Pairs also claimed a famous win over England in the group stages.

A STELLAR YEAR The youngest female member of the Bowls Section, Shermeen Lim, sure had an eventful 2016. She skipped a SCC team to garner Gold in the National Ladies’ Triples and Fours. On her own, she claimed bronze in the National Singles League. Shermeen and Ming Li, also a SCC bowler, were invited to participate in the prestigious Hong Kong Classic Pairs tournament last November.
Over on the Men’s side, Chia Tee Chiak (ELBC) and I put the only blemish on champions Australia, beating them 16-15 in an exhilarating match. We were looking forward to play against Alex Marshall MBE and Paul Foster MBE of Scotland, winners of the Pairs and Fours in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and many other World Championship titles. The match certainly lived up to the hype. If not for Alex’s amazing last shot which took the jack away, we could have claimed a famous victory against arguably the two best bowlers in the world. We dropped the game eventually 1517, but we walked out with our heads held high.
This ‘invitational-only’ tournament features top bowling nations and bowlers with a long list of accolades. In their group, they claimed the scalps of Scotland, New Zealand and Wales showing they were no pushovers. They were unlucky to finish fifth out of 12th in their group, narrowly missing out on the knockout stages by a mere three points. The year culminated with Shermeen being crowned ‘Bowler of the Year’ by Bowls Singapore for her achievements. We are certain 2017 will be an even greater year for her!

CHRISTMAS-CUM-ANNUAL AWARDS BRIDGE EVENT 2016 The Bridge Section’s much anticipated Christmas-cum-Annual Awards event took place on 19 December. There was a good turnout of 28 people despite the fact that many of our regular players were away on holiday. After a sumptuous dinner and free flow of wine and beer, everyone was ready for a good round of bridge. This time, everyone had to draw for a partner. No one was allowed to play with his or her own regular partner. This was a way to even the playing field. It was also a good way to get to know and play with other section members and guests. The highlight of the night was when the awards were given out after the game. The ‘Best Partnership’ award for 2016 went to Soundarya Iyer and Lee Cheong Seng. The ‘Individual

Pre-Season Buzz FOR the Cricket Section The 2017 season is well underway for the Cricket Section. We will be fielding six teams in competitive league cricket across the first five divisions of SCA this year. We have our task cut out with strong representation from over 110 players competing for 66 slots. The section this year is abuzz with 170 active members representing the Club across various levels – that is, if we add the JSM and Saturday XI squads to this number. Meanwhile Sky Sports recently covered SCC in their upcoming documentary ‘Beyond the Boundary’. Somerset cricketer Peter Trego spent some valuable time with SCC cricketers and shared the history of cricket in Singapore as well as some valuable game tips. Not only does it go a long way in promoting our rich heritage but it was also a great session for those present.

It was a matter of great pride for us as SCA recognised another outstanding individual performance from an SCC 1st team stalwart. Arun Vijayan spearheaded our attack through the year and was adjudged the best all-rounder in the league for the 2016 season. Arun had spectacular returns of 216 runs at 30.86 and 27 wickets at 15.67. Very well done on that front. In other news, in what promises to be the biggest T20 event in South-East Asia and a stupendous opportunity to showcase talents in the region; the preparations for the 5th edition of the SCC International T20 (11 – 13 August) are now in full swing. We will host reciprocal clubs from around the region and string together a few key international cricketers/pundits to grace the event. This is a marquee event for the Club and expression of interest for SCC’s 5th International T20 sponsorship is now open for various categories across the board. Our annual Christmas party was held at the Gilmour Room and it was attended by the most loyal members of the Darts Section. It’s always difficult hosting a function in December with everyone so busy at that time of year with a plethora of to-dos on their lists, but Fathima did a great job throwing together a wonderful bash. We had a lovely spread of delicious food and exciting games for good fun. The band also played a good mix of music to suit all tastes and had most on their feet dancing to the beats. The room was decorated in a Hawaiian theme creating a fun tropical party which contributed to the merry mood and atmosphere. There were numerous attractive prizes up for grabs in the lucky draw and all winners greatly appreciated their wins! We look forward to a busy season in 2017 and welcome all members new and old to enjoy a lively game of darts. We are often at the Men’s Bar having a great time and throwing a few where darts are provided. You are welcome to join us.

GOLF ACTIVITIES The Golf Section’s Christmas golf and dinner party on 15 December had a good turnout of 70 participants with seven from the Cricket and Darts Sections. The revelry stretched into the night and was well-led by the three-member band, Heart & Soul. The golf game held at TMCC Tampines course was also enjoyed and appreciated for the fact that it would be totally revamped in February. While members rue the passing of another iconic golf course, they also look forward to a ‘new’ golf course 18 months from now. We kicked-off the new year with a match with Changi Golf Club. This year, CGC graciously hosted us on 21 January - a day of the week that any golf course would see the heaviest demand by its members. Though the game is slated as an inter-club match, it was more fun amongst old friends than a competition. A full side of 36 players were fielded by us. Many of our section members are also CGC members and they had a hard time deciding which side to play for. Often, it was a question of which of their friends they wanted to play against!

afternoon, many of the players decided to abandon the game for clubhouse satays and beers. As such, the match was declared a draw, though there was little doubt that CGC was the better team for the day. Catering, which has always been SCC’s responsibility in this series featured South Indian cuisine by Gayatri Restaurant which also generously donated a sleeve of golf balls to all the players from both sides. Terry and his band played for us late into the night. CGC most graciously offered the Golf Section the privilege of two Sunday flights at a discounted rate of $60 per player, inclusive of buggy. This is in addition to the weekday flights in place which is at $50 per player. Lights, camera, action! The Hockey 6s is upon us once again! March is an important month in the SCC Hockey calendar. It is the month of the SCC International Hockey Sixes which is widely considered to be the greatest show on earth. This year’s event is aptly themed, ‘Showdown By Day. Showtime All Night’. After 22 successful editions, this year should be no different.
With the promotion of outstanding players from the lower squads to the 1st team, the SCC Men’s side will be there or thereabouts when the whistle goes off in the second week of March when the league begins.
PLAYER MOVEMENTS As the Sixes loom ahead, our bread and butter on the league scene continues. SCC Hockey has taken a few strides in the right direction over the last few years. The sum of efforts of the committee, coaching team and the players most importantly, have made it possible. SCC has always been able to attract true blue hockey talent. But of late, the bar has been raised somewhat higher. Being a great home for hockey players of all shapes, sizes and nationalities, many are very attracted to joining the Club and likewise find it difficult to leave when all good things come to an end. 2016 has seen a few good men leave due to relocation of their work and family to the United Kingdom and Australia. We wish them well and, in the same breath, we welcome some exciting fresh talent in both the Men’s and Ladies’ Section. More will be revealed in the coming editions of ‘The Padang’.
JUNIOR SCENE
With the potential return of Catherine Wheeler and Laura Rogers, the squad is already looking better. With a couple of new top league players from England, the Ladies’ team is also shaping up nicely.
SOCIAL EVENTS BOND THE SECTION AND LEAVES THEM ON 7TH HEAVEN The section’s monthly social at the Padang followed by light dinner and drinks has been a real hit. This social coupled with the Masters of the Sections’ monthly friendly matches included an amazing recent match played on 16 January (one plus six equals seven). The Barkerites were invited and they showed up with seven players. SCC only had seven that day so a 7-a-side match ensued. No prizes for guessing the final score - 7-7! Beers duly flowed and it was seventh heaven indeed. Hockey life at SCC is ticking nicely alongside the giant clock tower at the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall overlooking the Club. The SCC Hockey Section would like to take this opportunity to wish one and all a great year of sports ahead.
The section’s partnership with Anglo Chinese Junior College continues into its fourth year. After joining the Club earlier this year, the 33 kids will represent SCC in the National U19 Junior League (NJL). The girls will play in NJL1 and the boys in NJL3. The boys have won their three opening matches (at the time of print) and the girls are struggling in the depths of the NJL1 following the title win in NJL2 last season.
NATIONAL LEAGUE TITLE QUEST Unlike few years ago, these days SCC begins the National League 1 campaign as one of the favourites. The recruitment process for the Club’s 1st XI men and women is well and truly

2015 Tankards victorious and muddied after battle in the jungle
TANKARDS – THE TEAM EVERYONE IS TRYING TO BEAT The Tankards season started with “Yuuuuge” pressure placed upon their shoulders having been the title holders in the last two years. The season so far has been a fierce battle for the premiership race and the Tankards are the team everyone wants to beat. They say, “it takes two flints to make a fire”, so with a new captain Shane Dewer taking over from Sam Flint, the Tankards were obviously set to ‘burn, baby, burn’ this season. Great captains don’t lead alone and Shane has been aided by a number of Tankard stalwarts including Matt Love (Team Manager), Rishi Chandiok, Yan Sapiee and Bryan Lim. The wise, old and experienced core group of players has been enhanced by youth and vigour in the form of Adam Vine, Matt Cheong and a special mention goes out to the new ‘x-factor’ prop forward, Patrick Wheen. The Tankards had a comprehensive win against old foes, Oldham, 31-7 in early February which cemented their first place in the league. They are now training hard as they prepare for the upcoming finals. The team is looking to avenge the earlier season loss to Wanderers and gain dominance of the Singapore Championship division. A number of the Tankards squad are called upon to play with the Prems which is credit to Shane and this squad. The Tankards are certainly the team to watch out for in the coming weeks. The side has settled and racked up good points to stay in contention for the 2016-2017 title. January’s return fixture against the Purple Monkeys witnessed a complete reversal and more as the Club ran out 6-0 winners. That pushes the Strollers into top spot with five games remaining making it an exciting finish to the season. The year kicked off in competitive style for the Pads with two hard fought draws (0-0 and 1-1) against the Hibs and Orchard Rovers respectively. Exhibiting a promising new 3-5-2 formation, there are a few creases to iron out but the new system looks promising. There were no December games for the Tigers but they enjoyed their New Year’s with celebrations harking back to late November with a 3-0 win over FC Racing, fielding promising young players to bring the three points home.

Cosmo Team 2017
COSMO 2016 September brought the Cosmo league and as usual, SCC had a strong (and long) roster to call on. It was a great start to the season at Serangoon which was followed by three further wins so that at the half way stage SCC was in second place - a perfect position to launch an assault for the title. Unbelievably we managed to lose our next four matches - all 3-2 - and with a little luck we could easily have won all four. But not to worry, as the results (and luck) went against us we ensured we embraced the spirit of Cosmo and enjoyed ourselves to the hilt. Needing to win our final match against Tanglin Club to finish in second spot to SICC, we won 3-2 (for once). Forgetting it was a Monday night, we celebrated long and for those of us who had work in the morning, probably a little too hard! It was a very enjoyable season which was well organised by the Hollandse Club. It showed that the spirit of Cosmo was alive and well. We look forward to the months ahead and, who knows, with a little luck we may go one better. One thing is for sure - we’ll enjoy trying.
Brian van Ginkel’s Farewell
Brian van Ginkel - Totsiens Boet! Alles van die beste! Brian van Ginkel who is always up for one more game, or beer for that matter, was a familiar and welcome face for many years at the SCC squash courts and the Deli Verandah. He is a fierce social competitor who is never short of a smart-alec quip and usually ripe with classic sportsman humor delivered in his thick South African accent, of course. While he played in a number of leagues during his Singapore chapter, he was always a keen challenger (socially, of course) of others in higher realms, pushing himself to exhaustion more often than not and even to injury in numerous cases, much to the anger of his wife, Tessa. We wish him and his wife all the best in their new life in the relative wilderness of New Zealand where squash will undoubtedly take a back seat to all the diving, boating and other outdoor activities he has been missing. Cheers, Brian! PS: Anyone keen to play in the Masters in Auckland this April? Brian has generously offered to host any and all SCC friends for a visit.

GET YOUR GAME ON! A RETRO - AUSTRALIAN OPEN What a thrilling start it was to the year to watch the Australian Open Men’s Finals between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal! It has been a few years since they last met in the finals of a Grand Slam but they certainly did not miss a beat. The match was screened at Stumps to a bar full of people rooting for either player – it was a lively atmosphere. Also noteworthy was the women’s finals between Serena Williams and big sister Venus. Despite being on tour since the age of 14, both sisters showed their continued hunger for the game throughout the tournament. This was the ninth Serena-Venus Grand Slam finals and the eighth for Federer-Nadal.

COURTSIDE INTERVIEW Jo Stevenson joined the Club in 2016 and plays on the Club’s ladies’ team and other tournaments in Singapore. Not only does she work hard, she also plays hard. Originally from Scotland, Jo started playing tennis at the age of four and was selected to represent Scotland from the age of 10. She has won many Scottish junior and senior national titles and one of the highlights of her junior tennis career was being the number one U-14 player in Scotland. Prior to moving to Singapore, she represented her Scottish county in the British 1st division at the Aegon doubles championships in Eastbourne. While she was in the UK, she played for Surbiton Racket & Fitness club for 10 years, captaining her team playing in Surrey division 1. What keeps her motivated to play tennis? “The people I get to meet playing around the world and also my competitive spirit,” says Jo. And what she likes most about Singapore – “the diversity of culture and the sunshine”.

He also runs several group cardio tennis sessions each week for players of all levels: Mondays: 7-8pm Tuesdays: 7-8am; 8-9am For those looking for some match play: there is a section social tennis every Friday from 5pm with the busiest mostly on the last Friday of the month.
