CLUB NEWS

Dear Members,

The 2015 Annual General Meeting has concluded and I am most honoured and humbled to have been elected President of the SCC. My sincere thanks to all Members for attending the AGM and for taking such a keen interest in the ‘business affairs’ of the Club. I very much look forward to welcoming and working together with my newly elected fellow Members of the General Committee in the new term and to the collective benefit of all Members of our Club community. In writing this ‘Message’ I would also like to offer the warm thanks of myself and the Membership to the outgoing President, Mohan J. Bhojwani; Deputy President, Sher Baljit Singh Johal; Chairman Games Control Board, T. Ravi Chandran; Finance Member, Hamish Christie; Chairman Rules and Membership, Jon Robinson; and Chairman SG50 Task Force, Professor Brian Farrell for their very significant contributions and support of the Club during their tenure in their immediate past term of office. 2015 National Day Parade With the 2015 National Day Parade (NDP) taking place on the Padang this year, the Club has temporarily lost access and use of the Padang from 6 April 2015. Field sports activities - cricket, soccer and rugby – have necessarily had to be re-located to Dempsey Field. Due to the extensive nature of diverse infrastructures to be built for this year’s NDP as well as for other related SG50 celebrations; the lawn bowls green, tennis courts and multi-purpose court have also been temporarily acquired from 27 April 2015. The Club is looking into booking arrangements with external venues for lawn bowls, tennis and netball during the closure of the above mentioned facilities. Members will be updated on a regular basis via e-Blast communication with regards to NDP and other SG50 celebrations as informed to Club Management by the various government agencies.

Capt. Baldev Singh President Singapore Cricket Club

21st SCC international Hockey sixes tournament Themed ‘Red, White…Goal’ in celebration of SG50, the SCC Hockey 6s held on 28 February and 1 March 2015 on the Padang was a resounding success. This year saw the largest team participation yet in its 21st year with 65 teams in competition. I would like to express my thanks to the Hockey 6s Organising Committee, generous sponsors, and to all the teams and the volunteers over a most successful two days of competitive hockey. 8th SCC Annual Sports Awards Night SCC will honour its finest sporting talent at its 8th SCC Annual Sports Awards Night on 15 May 2015. Members from our 13 Sports Sections will come together on this evening of celebration of Club sport to recognise the achievements and dedication of our sports men and sports women who have so significantly contributed to their various Sections throughout the past year. SCC Staff Party The SCC Staff Party was held at the InterContinental Singapore on 11 April 2015 and was well-attended by staff who has a great time socialising with their peers. In closing this ‘Message’ I very much look forward to meeting with you at the SCC’s Clubhouse Building and discussing and understanding your views, comments and suggestions as I and the Committee commence our planning for the coming 12 months in office.

The Gilmour Family M

Visit SCC

r. Andrew Gilmour is one of the most extraordinary leaders to have presided over the Singapore Cricket Club and in Ilsa Sharp’s ‘Singapore Cricket Club – 150th. Anniversary’ she fondly refers to him as ‘The Grand Old Man’ of the SCC. This SCC dedicated Clubman who was also a fine cricketer and all-round sportsman (after whom the ‘Gilmour Room’ was named) served as the SCC’s President from 1947 – 1949, during which time he shouldered the responsibility of restoring order to the Clubs’ dismal state of affairs of falling membership and financial deficit immediately following World War II and its aftermath.

in that match) featured prominently against the 1927 Australian cricket side led by Australian legend Charles Gordon Macartney, was presented to Ms. Campbell by Deputy President, Mr Sher Baljit Singh who was also in attendance.

Gilmour wholly fitted the SCC tradition of eminent presidents – and after the War he served in senior colonial civil service posts of Secretary for Economic Affairs, Financial Secretary and finally ‘acting’ Colonial Secretary. He also presided over the Singapore Olympic Sports Council.

While still living in Singapore at that time, Ms. Campbell fondly recalled her frequent visits to the Club for lunch and drinks with her parents. The second day of the visit proved to be a delightfully nostalgic one for Ms. Campbell, who, together with her family, was hosted by Ms. Cynthia Robless and savoured one of SCC’s ‘Signature Friday Specials’ – ‘Fish Moolie’. This dish is one that she remembers with great affection. Lunch capped off with the presentation of the SCC Cookbook to Ms. Campbell by Executive Chef, Mr. Raymond Lee and Senior Sous Chef, Mr. Sultanul Arfin – the book details recipes of many of SCC’s well-loved dishes including ‘Fish Moolie’.

He assumed the Presidency once more, from 1962 – 1967 when he again voluntarily accepted the difficult task of rescuing

the Club from the grip of 1960’s turmoil as he had previously done during his first term of his post-War presidency. It is claimed by many Members that it was Gilmour’s’ foresight and dedication to the SCC that the Club may not have survived the travails of the 1960’s if it were not for his leadership. He was by all accounts a much loved figure in the SCC pavilion and although at times obstinate and argumentative he was an oldfashioned gentleman with an innate sense of fair play.

Another one of many highlights of her visit to the SCC was a tour of the ‘Gilmour Room’ where Ms. Campbell viewed and was much moved by the 1940’s picture and accompanying inscription of her father that honours him in the Room dressed in his cricketing ‘flannels.’ The Club was most honoured to have had the pleasure of the company of the gracious Ms. Campbell, Charles and Shirley and we very much look forward to their return to the SCC where they will always be most warmly welcomed.

The Club was indeed thrilled to learn of a visit to the SCC from the family of the man who had done so much for the Club. On 19 and 20 March 2015, the SCC warmly welcomed Andrew and Nelle Gilmour’s daughter; Sheena Campbell (nee Gilmour), who was accompanied by her son, Charles and daughter, Shirley. On 19 March 2015, Ms. Campbell and her family were received by SCC’s President Mr Mohan Bhojwani, fellow General Committee Members as well as General Manager, Mr. Nigel Stearns at the Main Lounge for an evening of drinks, fellowship and fond recollections and nostalgia. Remembering

Mr Lee Kuan Yew Article: Dr. K. U. Menon

T

he padang has been the venue for many milestones in Singapore’s tumultuous history. SCC members were present in full measure on 29 March 2015 to witness yet another significant moment – to bid farewell as Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew was solemnly borne on a gun carriage from Parliament where he lay in State, past the padang and on its final journey.

After the PAP victory in the 1959 elections, there were suggestions that the new government considered taking back the padang from its lessees – because the SCC & SRC had refused to allow the PAP to hold public rallies on the Padang. This did not materialise but the government did insist in 1962 that all clubs maintain at least 50 per cent Singaporean membership. But Mr Lee hastened to clarify in a speech in 1986 :

As a student at Raffles Institution, Mr Lee enjoyed cricket and may have played on the padang. In September 1945 when Japanese Imperial forces surrendered to Lord Louis Mountbatten at the Municipal Building (now known as City Hall), Mr Lee then 22 was among the crowds on the padang to witness the ceremony. British capitulation to the Japanese in 1942 and the subsequent brutality of Japanese forces was seminal in moulding Mr Lee’s political views.

“We did not pass laws, or issue orders. In a quiet sensible way…. (club) members …moved into the mainstream of Singapore life… .. we feel no compulsion to make ourselves uniform through forcing the pace of integration or assimilation.”

16

THE PADANG

May / June 2015

In his memoirs Mr Lee observed that one morning in November 1964, he looked across the padang from his office window at City Hall to see several cows grazing on the Esplanade. He “hit the

FEATURE

roof” and observed “The city had become scruffy while we were in Malaysia, after two communal riots in July and September 1964. Morale went down and discipline slackened”. He put a stop to it promptly. In later years he derived satisfaction from the view from his office in city hall: it reflected not only his own personality and concern for tidiness, but certainly the most English Green east of Suez.

“…I hope this Padang will always be a padang..…With the new highrises sprouting up around you, try not too drastically to alter your colonial period building. To see the Padang green and undiminished, with the SCC and the SRC buildings of another era, guarding two ends of it, is to be reassured. It is a piece of the Singapore I knew, a reassuring sight of the familiar in a vastly changed city.”

Mr Lee made his first appearance at SCC in 1963, when his wife presented the Lee Kuan Yew shield to the Club’s ladies hockey team. He returned to the club in 1970 to accept the honorary title of “Visitor”, a title coined 700 years ago and rooted in the traditions of Oxford University. In his acceptance speech, he observed :

It was perhaps fitting that the padang came to be the venue where so many thousands of Singaporeans and residents would wait in line patiently over many hours under the blistering sun and pouring rain to pay their last respects to their leader.

“Here is a cricket club that still plays cricket…I hope that this open green space and this building will continue to symbolise that capacity to change, to adapt, to adjust and to keep all that was gracious and good of the past…There is an indefinable quality about this Club which no other Club can match, it bridges the transformation from what was, to what is, and represents our capacity to meet what will be.” Mr Lee had the last word yet again in July 1986 at a function at the SRC, observing somewhat wistfully and with a certain fondness :

Mr Lee’s leadership and lifetime of dedication to Singapore is much treasured and will be profoundly missed.

round the world we travelled with style and class - from beautiful Japan to vibrant India and across the ocean to exotic Middle East. The SCC Staff Party, held on Saturday, 11 April 2015 took on a distinctly international vibe this year with its ‘Around the World’ theme.

The evening launched into a smooth cruise and everyone had their fill of the sumptuous international buffet spread which included succulent meats and an assortment of other mouthwatering dishes. A special halal buffet spread was also prepared for SCC’s Muslim staff.

Held at the elegant InterContinental Hotel Singapore, members of staff were treated to a well-deserved night of fun, rousing entertainment and delicious food in appreciation of their hard work and loyalty to the SCC over the past year.

Appetites sated, staff were entertained by the effervescent and humorous emcee who conducted various games bringing out a sense of adventure and spontaneity in the participants. There was even an SG50 themed quiz prepared by Professor Brian Farrell that had many putting on their thinking caps in a fun and competitive bid to guess the correct answer!

Dressed in their finest, members of staff began streaming into the “departure lounge” of the InterContinental Singapore where they were warmly welcomed by the Staff Party’s Organising Committee outfitted as cabin crew members of Singapore’s renowned flag carrier. While waiting in anticipation of the main event, staff were entertained with the wildly popular ‘Minute to Win It’ games which drew hearty cheers all around; the instant photo booth also proved to be a hit as many struck their best pose for the camera. In their respective addresses, General Manager, Mr. Nigel Stearns, observed that success is doing the ordinary extraordinarily well and encouraged staff to continue to carry out their duties the best they can. SCC President, Mr Mohan Bhojwani, reflected on the first Staff Party held outside Club’s premises when he was president three years ago; as well as the commendable efforts demonstrated by staff of SCC in their daily work.

One of many highlights that evening were the team performances - from the shimmying belly dancers to the sword wielding samurai to the energetic Indian dancers – they all drew thundering applause and shouts of enthusiastic encouragement around the ballroom. It was the samurai team from the Sports Department that won the ‘Best Dressed Team’ award of S$500 cash. Winners were aplenty that evening. There were a total of 30 lucky draw prizes and two Special Bonus Prizes of a Men’s and Ladies’ Raymond Weil timepiece that were generously sponsored by C. Melchers GMBH & Co. Scoring the 1st prize of S$1,688 in the lucky draw was Housekeeping Assistant, Ahmad AL Fikry Bin Bahrizan. The Club also honoured and presented 19 members of staff with Long Service Awards; the individuals listed in the following page have been serving between 5 and 40 years with steadfast dedication. The 2015 Staff Party soon “touched down” with a smooth landing after a memorable evening around the world with everyone looking forward to the next one in a year’s time!

APRIL FOOL’S DAY SPECIAL - COMEDY NIGHT 1 April 2015

I

n celebration of SG50, the Club organised a special April Fools’ Day Comedy Night with renowned local comedians – the flamboyantly outspoken Kumar who was as usual dressed to kill and the multi-talented Alfred George. The night kicked off with a welcome drink followed by an introduction of the Padang Restaurant’s new buffet dinner menu that is now available every Wednesday. Members were thoroughly entertained by the live stand-up comedy prompting howls of laughter around the room. The event was a roaring success and everyone enjoyed the scrumptious dinner and rib-tickling hilarity of the comedians antics.

EASTER CHILDREN’S PARTY 5 April 2015

T

he Easter Sunday Brunch was a sold-out event, with Members bringing their families for a deliciously filling meal at the Padang Restaurant. A special activity room was arranged for the eager children where they happily received Easter goodie bags and were entertained with arts and crafts and games. Each child had the opportunity to showcase their creativity by crafting cute bunny themed photo frames which they took home as a memento of the event. This year, we invited RHQ Rabbit Headquarters to bring their adorable rabbits to join the party – the impressively large Flemish Giant, Holland Lop and the snowy Dwarf Hotot rabbits were surrounded by bright-eyed children gasping in wonderment. They

learnt interesting facts and proper ways to care for these gentle fluffy creatures. The children were then encouraged to put on their thinking caps and take part in a fun quiz about the rabbits. The party ended on a high note with the entrance of our friendly Easter Bunny Mascot who made its rounds giving out Easter Surprise Eggs and taking photos with all present. We hope to see you again next year for yet another ‘hopping’ fun time!

HUNGARIAN WINE TASTING 10 April 2015

T

he history of Hungarian wines dates back to at least Roman times, and, in the early 20th century, Hungary was known as the world’s 7th top wine producing country with more than 77 million gallons of wines produced. Today, its many vineyards are experimenting with new blends and grape varieties that are producing remarkable results. Indeed wine making is in their blood and you would be able to discover the essence of their culture and history in every sip. Back by popular demand, we were truly honored to have the Hungarian Trading House Singapore conduct a special wine tasting event for our Members and guests. With the introduction of six different labels, everyone had the opportunity to understand the essence of a good Hungarian wine. They were also treated to exquisite canapés prepared by our very own Chefs which paired in perfect harmony with the featured Hungarian wines. The Hungarian wine tasting experience allowed our Members and guests to appreciate not only the elegant taste of Hungarian wines but also the rich history that Hungary has to offer. Special thanks to the Hungarian Trading House Singapore.

LOOK WHO’S COOKING 18 April 2015

C

an you guess who’s cooking? We were honoured to have our Member, Ms Sunita Kapoor take us on an ethnic culinary adventure on 18 April 2015 at the Gilmour Room. She generously demonstrated the making of several popular North Indian dishes. For starters, there was ‘dhal kachori’ (lentil fritters) with ‘green chutney’ followed by a main course of ‘Sindhi style dum (steamed) biryani’ served with an option of chicken or mutton with a refreshing side of ‘yogurt raita’ (salad). A sweet finish to the decadent meal came in the form of ‘gajar halwa’ (carrot pudding) served with ice cream. Everyone had a sampling of the dishes and gave them two thumbs up. Thank you, Ms Sunita Kapoor, for sharing your recipes with us.

21st SCC International Hockey Sixes Tournament Article by: Mathavan Devadas Photo Credits: Andrew Lim / Benny Kee

T

he Sixes this year (the 21st in the series) was the largest tournament yet in terms of participating teams. A total of 40 men’s and 24 ladies’ teams participated as compared to 40 men’s and 20 ladies’ teams in 2014, which was the previous high. Of the participating teams there were a record number of 6 Japanese teams and new teams from Indonesia and Australia. The competition started off with a bang on Saturday morning with four pitches starting simultaneously at 8am... some more enthusiastically than others!! We were blessed with bright sunshine contrary to the weather report, thanks mainly to a concoction of garlic, chillies and onions planted on the Padang by our Chief Marshall’s sister. The first day saw the matches going very much to form. Hotspurs and Fremantle Black (Australia), SRC (Singapore) and Clubhouse Casuals (United Kingdom) notched up perfect records in their pools in the Men’s competition. In the Ladies Competition The Pink Ladies and Cairns Sapphires (Australia) and home team SCC looked impressive coming out of the pool matches.

32

THE PADANG

May / June 2015

However the Sixes has always been an all round competition with the element of good social being very important. So the weekend was marked by quite strikingly attired teams such as the YMCC Men and the Valley Ladies. The HKCC Men started out interestingly enough when their kit man did not manage to roll out of bed in time for their 8am start and they were seen playing in nothing that resembled a team uniform! The Sixes dinner was on Saturday again. The theme for this year was “Red White Gold, SCC Sixes Celebrates SG50”. The teams very sportingly obliged with a variety of costumes with several being real eye catchers! The band and DJ dished out songs from the 60s to date recalling memories of when Singapore was young. Teams took to the dance floor as early as 8pm with some unable to leave (for various reasons!) even after the DJ closed for the night at 2am. Many drifted off to Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and goodness knows where else, with some not quite making it back to the hotel or for that matter the Padang the next day! Party fever notwithstanding most of the players managed to drag themselves to the Padang on Sunday morning for the knock-out phase of the competition. Some teams were later than most

SPORTS

causing the Eagles Nest to issue several final warnings over the public address system, which very often appeared to be falling on deaf ears!! But once again matches did get underway, almost according to schedule with the more fun-loving teams managing to secure an early release to the SCC Bar. At times the said Bar was so overrun with players that an official had to be placed there as traffic control! Another favourite retreat was the Sixes Pool which fortunately held its structure despite the numbers. Next year a life guard may be required! In the main Cup competition matches continued to go to form with Hotspurs, SRC, SCC and Fremantle Black making it to the semi-finals for the Men and SCC, Pink Ladies, Cairns Jade and Sapphires making it to the Ladies’ semi-finals. Unfortunately for the home team, both SCC teams did not make it to the final. The ladies recovered some consolation when their captain Catherine Wheeler was voted Ladies Player of the Tournament.

the ball crossed the line and the goal was disallowed! The teams fought to a 0-0 draw even after extra-time and the game went to a shoot-out, where the Fremantle keeper, Muhammad Iszuan proved to be exceptional saving 2 SRC attempts, allowing his team to win the shoot-out 2-1. Curiously Iszuan was from SRC but as he was not required for the weekend, he played for Fremantle who did not have a keeper... fate can be cruel and kind! All in all a very enjoyable weekend for everyone and we look forward to 2004 with some considerable hope. A big thank you to our sponsors, Accor, Guiness, Asia Pacific Breweries, Melchers, FTO, THORB, Talenat, Gayatri’s and Fish & Co.

In the Men’s Plate Final Royal Thai Airforce and Anzai Japan entertained the near 400 crowd to a pulsating match with Anzai taking the lead, followed by the Thai equalising then racing to a 3-1 lead. Anzai fought back to make it 2-3 but were unable to claw back the game. The Ladies Cup was played between 2 Australian teams, Cairn Sapphires from Queensland and The Pink Ladies from Perth. Both teams started off cautiously but picked up the pace in the second half. Both teams had chances but the Pink Ladies scored through Nicola McEvoy and held their lead to win 1-0. It was the first time. The Men’s Cup Final was a showdown between defending champions SRC and Fremantle Black. Again both teams started cautiously and SRC actually had the ball in the net but the hooter for half-time had gone a split second before

Delightful Tour to the Kinabalu Club The Section participated in the 5th Annual Invitational Balut Competition over the weekend of 6 – 9 March. Other Clubs involved were the Kinabalu Club (hosts), Kinabalu Yacht Club, Sabah Golf and Country Club, Sandakan Yacht Club and the Sarawak Club. A most enjoyable weekend was had by all with 76 participants. The ‘Land below the Wind’ - the ancient mariner’s name for North Borneo. The phrase was resurrected by Agnes Newton Keith in her books on old North Borneo. Also known as the ‘Hornbill Country’, in fact, a world in miniature where one can view the finest sunsets in the world with Mount Kinabalu as a backdrop. It must have inspired Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin to write the song ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’. Sabah must be the best kept secret in South East Asia. However, I digress; this is not a travel log but the Balut Section’s page.

Our Team at Malacca Club

M

alacca Trip – 13 to 16 March 2015 The Billiards and Snooker Section was formally invited by the Malacca Club to participate in their Inter-Club Invitational Snooker Tournament in celebration of the Club’s 125th anniversary. We drove up on 13 March with a team of four players: Victor Yeong, Matthew Lim, Tan Bak Choon and Jason Teo together with an avid supporter, Mr Adrian Tow, who was very familiar with Malacca. There were a total of 12 teams, with 11 from different states of Malaysia who participated in the tournament and competition was indeed very strong. Some of our old pals from Royal Selangor Club and Penang Sports Club also participated and fielded very competitive players for the tournament. After two days of intense competition, Negri Sembilan Chinese Recreation Club emerged the winner of the tournament.

We had a great time catching up with old friends, and many new ones were made as well from other Malaysian clubs such as Royal Lake Club, Royal Port Dickson Yatch Club and Raintree Club, just to name a few. Victor Yeong presenting a plaque to Malacca Club’s President

Beer and whiskey flowed continuously from 9am every morning and there was never a time anyone went hungry. Many thanks to Malacca Club for hosting such a successful and wonderful event!

Penang Sports Club Interport – 28 March 2015 We were honored to host this year’s Interport with our dear and close friends together with their supporters from Penang Sports Club. We also had representatives from Penang Club and Malacca Club who came to cheer on their Malaysian team. This Interport was special as it was held in remembrance of our late Section Member and past Convenor, Subhas Anandan, and a trophy was made in his name. There were a total of 11 players who competed in this nail-biting five singles and three doubles event. The results were very close, with Penang Sports Club finally winning 9-7. Everyone had a great game and a wonderful time catching up. Dr. Koey, Captain from Penang Sports Club and our Captain, Matthew Lim, both delivered very encouraging speeches. A round of applause to them! National League Games – Division 1 We have completed our last league game for Division 1. This league is one of the most challenging as we did not have a venue to practise due to the renovation. Our players were not exactly prepared when competing with our opponents who had some top National players. We also unfortunately had to concede walk-over in one of the games due to the Billiards Room not being ready yet. Great efforts from all the players who took time off to participate in this challenging league held every week throughout the fourmonth period. Upcoming Event – RBSC Invitational 6 Red Tournament We will be fielding a team of seven players to Bangkok to participate in the RBSC Invitational 6 Red Tournament from 3 April 2015 to 7 April 2015. Good luck to all the players!

Mary Lim (Champion) with Shermeen Lim (Runner-Up)

Champions of 2015 Decided

T

here it is then. Before the anticipated closure of the green in late April 2015, we completed our flagship tournament, the SCC Lawn Bowls Singles Competition, and declared two of our very outstanding bowlers as the champions of SCC Lawn Bowls Section for 2015 Sustainable Success Mary Lim emerged as the favourite of the champion of the ladies’ tournament the day she placed her name down for participation. Mary won all her matches in the round robin with her precise drawing and supremely effective running shots. The toughest challenge came in a match against Loh Hui Shan who pushed her to the edge with Mary winning by a singular shot (21-20). Mary did face match point during that tense match which she saved using her last bowl, and subsequently winning the match on the very next end.

Our new Men’s champion Zoher Motiwalla with Runner-Up, Chai Hon Yoong

favourite. But he did it. He won it with class, flair and calm. It was not as though he had an easy draw too. Along the way, he dispatched the likes of Wong Hui Kai, TQ Lim, Ben Cunico, Christian Huang and Chai Hon Yoong (eventual losing finalist). This list comprises of current and ex-national players who know how to play a good game of bowls. In the finals, Zoher went into a big lead in the beginning with Chai threatening to make a comeback mid way in the game. However, Zoher converted the head several times under pressure to close out the game. The crowd cheered at the veranda when the final result was decided and Zoher deserved all the plaudits! In the plate final, Wong Hui Kai beat Retna Sabapathy to clinch the plate championship. Results: Cup Champion: Zoher Motiwalla Runner-up: Chai Hon Yoong 2nd Runner-up: Christian Huang Plate champion: Wong Hui Kai Runner-up: Retna Sabapathy

At the end of the day, experience prevailed and it is fair to say that Mary will remain a dominant force in Singapore and the Club’s lawn bowls community for many years to come. In the battle for second, Shermeen Lim edged Loh Hui Shan 21-10 in the decider match to clinch the last trophy spot for the competition. Results: Champion: Mary Lim Runner-up: Shermeen Lim Emergence of a New Champion Zoher Motiwalla has been bowling well for some time now but although he was one of the favourites before the competition, he was definitely not the

S

ome of our SCC Members have started playing in the 29th Singapore National Bridge League organised by the Singapore Contract Bridge Association (SCBA). It is held on Saturdays with the first game played on 14 March 2015. We have also been invited to join the Premier Bridge League. It involves a minimum of four players, playing every 2nd week of Saturday at the various clubs. Altogether seven events are to take place on Sunday afternoons. Clubs in the Premier League include Chinese Swimming Club, Singapore Recreation Club, Serangoon Gardens Country Club, Keppel Club, National University of Singapore Society and Geylang West Bridge Club. Our last special event was the Chinese New Year Lo Hei celebration which was a great success. We had a fabulous selection of food and drinks followed by our game of bridge. One event we all looked forward to thereafter was the Easter special event on 6 April 2015 with the winners of the Easter game being: Alice Bloodworth and Firoz Khimji. It is unfortunate the new indoor games room is not an appropriate venue for bridge. We will continue to play bridge in the Oval Restaurant for the time being. We welcome anyone who is interested in learning to play bridge to contact us and, if we have enough people, the Section would be happy to conduct bridge classes for beginners.

Best Individual performances Brigu Iyer takes a wicket against IA

A

lthough the season started two months ago, it has been a very ‘stop-start’ season so far, for a number of reasons, but mainly to do with ground availability. Having said that, it has been a promising start for SCC teams across all divisions. Lions, having lost the first two matches of the season, have won their last three to put themselves right back in contention. With the other teams it is too early to tell, based on league standings alone, but the signs are positive. There have already been a number of outstanding individual performances. In Tigers first match of the season, opening pair Kevin Robertson and James Muruthi both scored centuries in a partnership of 227. In terms of bowling, Suresh Kalpathy’s incredible figures of 5 for 4 is the stand-out and unlikely to bettered ! Much of this has to do with good attendance at training since pre-season, under the guidance of our new Club coach, Ricky Anderson, who is making his presence felt already.

Darts Triangular Tournament

ARTS TRIANGULAR TOURNAMENT 2015 began with a D bang! SCC hosted the Darts Triangular between the two clubs NUSS and SGCC (Serangoon Gardens Country Club). Each team played close to 15 games for each category and we had a series of Men’s Singles, Doubles, Ladies’ Singles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. NUSS took the stand by winning the Darts Triangular Championship this year. SGCC came in 2nd and SCC 3rd. I would like to thank Captain Philip for arranging all the games. My Section Exco Members, Shelia, Soma and Mohan for coming together in the planning of the event. Thank you team!

All in “red” to bring in more prosperity

WELCOMING THE YEAR OF THE GOAT DARTS LO HEI Darts Section welcomed the Year of the Goat in a traditional way. We had a strong turnout close to 40 Section Members and Guests for the Lo Hei which was held at the Oval Restaurant. The “Lo Hei” tossing is believed to bring in more prosperity and therefore, we have been continuing with this tradition. A night to be remembered because of the overwhelming responses we had. We had also a lot of friendly games for our Guests and our Section Members and everyone had a great night. FRIENDLY GAME WITH BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION Darts Members off to British High Commission on 20th March 2015. We catered a minibus to transport about 15 Section Members to the venue.

Welcoming the Year of Goat with Lo Hei

It was a return match and we had a series of Men’s Doubles, Ladies’ Singles, Men’s Single, Ladies’ Doubles, and Mixed Triples. SCC did very well in all the series of Darts Games and the final score was 14-11 to British High Commission. I would like to thank John Lally from British High Commission for organising this friendly game and making it a memorable one for us. Truly a day to remember, both team fostered great camaraderie! 42

The Black and Gold prepare for Gold Harvest this season

T

he Singapore Cricket Club’s Hockey Section have just started to take a breather after putting on yet another fantastic fun-filled International Sixes. Although none of SCC’s teams were amongst the winners, both the Men’s and Ladies’ 1st teams made it to the semi-finals and were undone by single goals against the run of play. Not to be left empty handed, SCC’s Ladies’ 1st XI captain, Catherine Tyler, was voted the tournament MVP. As honoured as she was, she would have gladly traded this accolade for a place in the Ladies’ Cup finals. Such is the mind set of the Ladies’ 1st team as they launch a fresh bid to claim the National Women’s League 1 title later this year. The Ladies’ 1st Team has been in light training these few months whilst focussing on the Women’s Premier Liga - a pre-season warm up competition which they currently lead by three-points from Theresians who are in 2nd place. They have won their first three games scoring 11-goals and conceding two thus far. The 2012 Premier League champions will head into intensive training from May onwards at what they affectionately call the “Smurf Turf”. Likening the brand new blue Astroturf at our training venue at MOE Evans to the classic cartoon series. The comic stops there as the Black and Gold ladies are heading for a Gold rush come end of the year in the NWL 1, and amongst their ranks they boast one Emily Chan, a former SCC Sports Girl of the year who will once again don national colours as she lines up for Team Singapore in the upcoming 28th South East Asia Games Hockey competition. With Malaysia winning all but one of the gold medals at the Games, Emily is fully aware that the task to be amongst the medals is itself a test, Emily is putting in extra training hours and taking the Women’s Premier Liga seriously as she perfects her already ace game to bring Singapore a Silver in the least.

The advent of Thailand as regional hockey powerhouse of late and Malaysia’s unmistakable dominance of the sport does make the push for Gold during the June multi-sport games in Singapore’s 50th Independence anniversary a mountain to climb. Emily, however, will give her all and let the rest be history. History is something that would be made in the Men’s side of things if SCC were to win the National Hockey League 1 which starts in July this year. As dominant as we have been the highest Men’s club honour has eluded SCC throughout its history and after coming a mere five points to the title last season, SCC’s Men have been gearing up to make another push for the title. The Hockey Section’s 2014 season team of the year, the SCC 1st XI Men have incorporated a weekly 5 km run as part of their team bonding and fitness regimen as they prepare to make an assault on the long standing top two of the Singapore top flight scene of Jansenites and SRC. Although it will take a big effort all around for SCC to emerge Champions, our very own Black and Gold Lions are going to give it a right crack. Putting in the right amount of effort is something our Junior did as the National Junior League Boys 1 and Girls 1 ended in late March. The boys besides putting on valiant performances in all matches could not bridge the jump from NJL B2 to B1 following their promotion last season. They finished in 7th place with one win and a draw. The girls finished 5th following their NJL G2 title win last season. The end of the NJL signals the start of the new open season and the National Hockey League 2 for Men and National Women’s League 2 begun on 28 March 2015. We are delighted to report that both our 2nd XI Men and Ladies posted a deadly double of 2-1 wins over our arch rivals SRC. The win is the first we have gotten in their league in the last 4 years and we are certain that we will maintain this fine start in the coming weeks to finish in the higher, if not, highest echelons of both these leagues. The Section once again would like to announce that it now boasts its very own hockey academy and if you want your child (between 6 to 18 years old) to learn hockey in a professional setting with an elite sports club backing it, you need not look further than “The Hockey SCChool”. Trainings are on Saturdays at Delta Sports Complex from 10am to Noon. Contact our head coach Kanan Packrisamy at 90217012 for more information. Finally, take note that SCC will entertain: • The Royal Air Force Men’s and Ladies’ teams on 9 May 2015 from 3 to 6pm at Delta Sports Complex • Bradfield College on 3 July 2015 from 6 to 8pm at Evans Road.

RUGBY

Ending the season in style

S

aturday 7 February 2015 was a milestone in the Section’s history. All four Rugby Section teams made the finals, and almost everyone had a chance to play on the big day (unless you were skiing in Japan…). First to kick-off were the mighty Lions against the veteran Growlers. Elliot Smith’s Lions, who are used to putting cricket scores on teams (beating Tamoko 91-0 the week before) did not have it easy against Cookie’s boys. Two very different styles of play complemented each other nicely, the Growlers mauling and work in the pack being met with wide attacks by the youthful Lions backs. 3.30pm however doesn’t favour the mature gentleman, and the heat took its toll. After holding the scores about even by half time the Lions pulled away to retain the Bowl and Conference title 20-8. It was Jonty Kay’s mighty Tankards up next against Oldham 1XV. There’s some history here. Oldham, an ACS (ACS Barker Road – just to be clear) old boys’ team, is one of the shining lights of rugby in Singapore. An excellent team who have come a long way in the last few years. The rather large fly in that particular rugby ointment of greatness is the fact that they lost to the Tankards in the final last year. So, this season, rather than follow St Andrews up to the Premiership, Oldham decided to stay in the Championship and have another go... it didn’t go well for them.

Tankards scored almost right off the kick off; the disciplined Tankards’ defence closed down what attacking options Oldham had; Sam Flint marshalled a superb series of ‘five and drive’ line outs mauling over the line. Now obviously it wouldn’t have been a Tankards game if we hadn’t almost thrown it away. Some fantastic yellow cards and a (interesting) red for Mounsey two minutes after he was subbed on kept up the tension. But we won: Championship and Plate winners two years running! Last up, the big one. By getting to the final, the all new Prems squad had reached Head Coach Matt Singer’s goal this season. Anything else was a bonus. With injuries and the slopes of Sapporo against them, Pete McFeely’s Prems were struggling for numbers to say the least. With a 52-5 loss last time round hanging over everyone it wasn’t a pleasant build up for the coaches. But, as they say, the final is different. As the Maestro Mike Cosnett put it, what the Prems produced was some of the best rugby this club has ever played. Some outstanding performances by Chris Gee, Tim Foister, Faris Bajandouh and Section Player of the Year David Griffiths kept the game close all the way through. Wanderers were disciplined and relentless as expected: they were, frankly, the fitter and more drilled team. But Prems pulled out all the stops, right to the end, and at full time only a six point gap remained. A converted try would have done it. Next year, and one more season to build on, it will be different.

ollowing the success of the 6th Soccer Sixes tournament in 2015, the 7th Singapore Cricket Club Soccer Sixes tournament has taken place in January this year.

This tournament has evolved over the previous years and is now regarded as one of the marquee sporting events of the Singapore Cricket Club as it continues in its aim to raise the profile and standards of Asian football, aided by the introduction of professional teams from around the globe. The aim of this competition is to highlight the many talents of Asian football, and its promising young players; all within the format of six-a -side football. This year saw SCC with three teams in the Open tournament Firsts, NFL and the newly formed U18 teams which were joined by local teams and teams from HKG, Thailand and Malaysia. The Masters tournament had two SCC select teams and was joined by 14 other teams which included many former international players and the guest speaker was Lee Sharpe. The Youth tournament was inspired by Henrik Lorenz, an old and dear friend of SCC who founded the Youth Football Home in Phuket - the first team to take part in the SCC 6’s Youth Tournament which were joined by Phom Penh Crown Club. They were winners of the last two editions of the SCC 6’s with a chance at a historic “three-peat” and last year’s finalists Youth

Andrea Nicholas) June is SEA Games month and we have four special players who will be representing Singapore in squash and making up half the Singapore squad. Joannah Yue has been Singapore’s dominant female player for over ten years. In 2014 she won her 10th National title, but suffered a serious knee injury not long after, which required surgery. She has worked hard to get back to her pre-injury level in preparation for the Games. Vivian Rhamanan took his 4th National title in 2014 by beating fellow SCC player Bryan Koh in the final. In 2014, Vivian also won the Kijono Cup Indonesian Open, China Open 7th Leg, Tanglin, RBSC and Raintree Jumbo Doubles Championships. Since Christmas, Joannah and Vivian have been training virtually full-time in preparation for the upcoming Games. While overseas we have 20-year-old Mao Shi Yuan who is studying at Yale and playing squash for the Yale team and Bryan Koh (22), who is in his second year at Harvard and playing on their very strong squash team. They will both be coming home in May to train with the rest of the Singapore team before the Games begin. Squash will be played at the SEA Games from 9-15 June. Singles and team events will be played at the Kallang Squash Centre. Men’s Jumbo Doubles will be played at the Tanglin Club. Best of luck and we will be supporting you.

league took place between March and April. The Men’s A, B and C teams, and for the first time in many years, a (young) Ladies’ team B took part in this competition. The Ladies’ A category was scrapped by the organisers due to insufficient entries. However, the (young) Ladies’ B team which is essentially made up of new Junior Sports Members to give them more match practice, and some seasoned lady players at the Club, made a very impressive debut by coming in second in their division. The Men’s A team displayed their former glory by beating clubs such as SANWA, Clay Courts and Swiss Club. They emerged second place! Congratulations to the Men’s A and Ladies’ B team. Closure of SCC courts for SG50 The grass courts have been closed from 27 April 2015 for Singapore’s National Day celebrations. Alternative court arrangements have been made at venues such as the Savitar Tennis Centre located at the Fairmont Hotel at City Hall, not far from the Club. For details on how to book and further information, contact the Tennis Section at tennis@sccsections.org.sg. Junior Members – ‘Fun On Grass’ As part of their initiation to

the SCC, tennis sessions on the grass courts were organised for the juniors. Being traditionally hard court players, and used to the predictable bounces on hard court, the players found themselves challenged and occasionally, outsmarted by the grass courts. Yes, the grass courts at SCC has this effect on newcomers! Who would have known that sometimes a soft tap on the serve could earn you an ace? “…Though I was eager to play on grass, it took awhile to get a hang of the ball bounce which was quite low and fast. I had to be faster with my footwork and had to swing early to meet the ball low and go to the net more often…” – Rupika Pendyala, 15 years old.

Boundaries

On Friday 13 March, we had Tennis 101 - Remember to hydrate! the pleasure of hosting a small group from the Floreat Park Tennis Club in Perth Australia. The format for the evening was a social one. We enjoyed friendly doubles and mixed doubles on a lovely evening. After tennis we shared a meal together in the courtyard where a range of local dishes was served to our visitors delight! It often takes our visitors to remind us what a special setting we have at SCC. There are not many tennis courts in the world situated right in the middle of the city surrounded by spectacular architecture, old and new. Our visitors were quite taken by the history of our Clubhouse and all the silverware on display at the Padang restaurant. The view from the Stumps bar overlooking the city lights was a grand finish to the evening. Having ‘tennis’ as a common interest allows us to nurture relationships with people from different places and cultures, not only in a competitive nature but also socially.

Trick or treat? Playing on SCC’s grass court!

Twin Power Two of the latest Junior Sports Members to join the

Club are twins, Nadine and Natasha Loh. Recently, they were part of the Singapore team of Under-14 juniors (boys and girls event) that took part in the World Junior Tennis pre-qualifying rounds in Malaysia. The World Junior Tennis is sort of like the ‘World Cup’ for junior players. Together with their team mate, Nadine and Natasha played in a series of singles and doubles matches against Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Iraq and Iran. Team Singapore (girls) won all its matches and has now advanced into the qualifying rounds. The next round will be held in late April in Bangkok and Team Singapore will face stiffer competition as they play against teams from Taiwan, South Korea and Japan.
