Mr Lee Kuan Yew

SCC’s Lifetime “Visitor” T

his year Singapore celebrates its 50th year of independence as a city-state and we remember the visionary leader who shaped the nation into the thriving metropolis it is today. Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, our founding Prime Minister from 1959 to 1990 championed the growth and progress of Singapore while leading the government for decades thereafter. Mr. Lee believed that to be successful Singapore needed to be important to a world that did not owe it a living, which meant moulding a society that possessed a strong sense of itself but at the same time became a truly global hub.

Mr. Lee recognised this challenge on a smaller scale by the handsome tribute he paid to our Club when we hosted him in December 1970, declaring “…there is an indefinable quality about this club which no other club can match – it bridges the transformation from what was, to what is, and represents our capacity to meet what will be.” May we always strive to merit his praise. The following pages bear the transcript of the speech delivered by Mr. Lee Kuan Yew in 1970 at a dinner hosted by the SCC during which time he was bestowed the honorary title of ‘Visitor’.

You do not have to make me a Visitor. There is no building, no road, no school, named after any of my colleagues or me. You are not required to give honorary membership or club facilities to any one of us.

Article: Mr A. Purushothaman

T

he Lawn Bowls Association for the Disabled, Singapore (LBAD) was recently invited by the Singapore Cricket Club for a friendly game of bowls. The SCC has been a source of inspiration to members of LBAD. The numerous practices and friendly games at the SCC and Kallang Green have helped elevate the standard of our game. The LBAD members thoroughly enjoyed the game as well as the hospitality, warmth and willingness of the SCC Members to teach us the finer points of lawn bowls. We exchanged gifts to mark the occasion which was graciously attended by the then Deputy President, Mr Sher Baljit Singh Johal. He was very impressed with our players and encouraged us to work with the SCC Lawn Bowls Section to arrange more friendlies and practices together. The LBAD is most pleased to take the opportunity to strengthen our comradeship with the Club. The idea of forming an association for the physically challenged with the purpose of playing an outdoor game of lawn bowls was originally mooted by SCC Member, Mr A. Purushothaman when he witnessed physically challenged individuals, including those on wheelchairs, play excellent lawn bowls during his participation at the Australian Tattersalls Tournaments in 2001. He discussed the idea with like-minded friends and they set out to raise funds and conceptualise the formation of an association. With help from many individuals and corporate partners, LBAD was registered under the Societies Act in April 2004 and a committee was duly elected under the leadership of Mr Purushothaman to run it.

Lawn bowls is a sport which allows those who are able-bodied, as well as those who are physically, mentally and visually-challenged to pick up the game in a relatively short time. It is a game of strategy, aim and delivery of the bowls rendering it a good sport for the mind and body. The sport enhances the self-confidence of people with disabilities and a positive attitude developed on the playing field can have a positive impact on the quality of daily life. The initial committee worked very hard to recruit over 60 members including the Sree Narayana Mission Home for the mentally burnt-out; Singapore Leprosy Relief Association; Metta Welfare Association (Metta School); Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) and the Association for Persons with Special Needs, Chaoyang School who adopted lawn bowls as an ExtraCurricular Activity. LBAD was awarded the status of Institution of Public Character (IPC). Today, LBAD enjoys numerous games and despite their disabilities, has taken part in international meets such as the: • FESPIC Games in Kuala Lumpur in 2006 • World Championships in Sydney in 2008 • Asian Para Games in Incheon in 2015

n 15th May, the Club celebrated outstanding sporting talents from its 13 Sports Sections at the 8th SCC Annual Sports Awards. Section representatives, keen supporters and Members of the General Committee gathered at the Padang Restaurant in honour of the nominees of the various awards. Taking pride in its rich and storied history of sporting tradition, the awards ceremony aimed to recognise sporting achievements borne out of determination, passion and exemplary sportsmanship in the past year. The event was emceed by fellow sportsman and Fox Sports TV pundit, P J Roberts who engaged the audience with his charismatic warmth and energy. The event commenced with an opening address by Deputy President, Mr Brian Teo who congratulated the 13 Sports Sections on their various accomplishments. Chairman, Games Control Board, Mr Richard Stapley-Oh expressed his appreciation for the tenacious efforts of SCC’s sportsman and sportswomen, not forgetting the budding Junior Sports Members. The ‘Sports Initiative of the Year’ award, now in its second year, was presented to the Darts Section which has over the past year, initiated a number of activities with the purpose of maintaining an active and vibrant Section for its Members. Earning the ‘Team of the Year’ award was the Rugby Section’s SCC Growlers. It was a double victory for the Section that evening as they proudly claimed the ‘Section of the Year’ award too. Members and guests, in high spirits and good cheer, made their way to the Gilmour Terrace for an array of delicious food and great company – undoubtedly recapping highlights of the awards ceremony with plans for even bigger accomplishments in the coming months. Dinner was swiftly followed by the musical stylings of Dr. Feelgood – the rock band had everyone on their feet dancing the night away.

Good comradeship at the Inter-Club League even though particular SCC Members choose to play for rival teams!

B

alut Just Keeps Getting BIGGER! At our Section Night in May, a total of ten tables were set up in the Gilmour Room to accommodate 37 Members and guests who turned up to wage a battle with the cup and dice. Intense competitiveness intermingled with camaraderie; the latter always the main ingredient during Section Nights. At the first inter-club Balut League, SCC made up 7 of the 20 participating teams. Rival clubs were pleasantly surprised that the SCC has triggered such widespread fervor for the game of balut. There is just no stopping the ballooning enthusiasm for this sport at our Club. If you’ve not as yet had the chance to get your balut fix, feel free to attend any of our Section Nights, usually on the third Tuesday of each month. Seasoned players will be happy to guide you along. Be warned though – you just might get addicted to the sport. The month of May saw some pretty high scores, with Mogens Anderson hitting the highest overall score of 683 points, closely followed by Kiran Kaur with 671 points. The highest individual score went to Mogens Anderson with 141 points. Even The Committee Got Bigger There was no need to cajole Section Members to lend a helping hand and be part of the Committee. Not only did the four office bearers and two Committee Members readily step forward when their names were proposed, an additional two were co-opted into the Committee as well. John Taylor, Raj Kumar and Lars Berg were re-elected as Convenor, Captain and Treasurer respectively. Margaret Cunico was elected Secretary. Sunita Kapoor and Mogens Andersen

were re-elected into the Committee while Else Stokkmo and Yasmin Gaffoor were co-opted. We look forward to any feedback or suggestions from Section Members. Mr Mullet: Man of the Moment! It came as no surprise that Geoff Mullet was the worthy recipient of the Balut Section’s Spirit of the Sport Award at the Club’s 8th SCC Annual Sports Awards 2015 in May. The affable Geoff truly embodies the essence of balut. Geoff never fails to turn up on Section Nights if he is not travelling. He is also a stalwart at our interclub league and annual interport meets. In the midst of his friendly banter, Geoff often makes some pretty nifty and strategic moves when he rolls that dice, which gets him consistently high scores. Have a game with Geoff, and you’ll soon learn that balut ain’t no game of fluke. Inter-Club League Begins The first in the series of monthly tournaments began in May with the Singapore Recreation Club playing host. Our side was strongly represented by 28 players. The highest scoring teams were: 1. Indian Association with 2446 points. 2. NUSS Team 2 with 2424 points. 3. SCC Team 6 with 2412 points. It is still early days yet in the League. A

n Eventful Lead-Up to the Nation’s 50th Birthday As the exciting SG50 celebration draws closer, let us review the happenings around the green leading up to the highly anticipated milestone event. Spirit of Sport Award Dr. K U Menon has been a Club Member since 1985, and has contributed significantly to the Club in various ways over the years. In more recent years, he has been a lawn bowls Committee Member for 5 consecutive years from the time he joined the Section. He has also been the Scribe for every issue of ‘The Padang’ magazine while serving the Committee.

Velu (Captain) with our Spirit of Sport Recipient, Menon, and SCC General Committee Member, Anwar. (Left to right)

In competitions, he has won the SCC Men’s Drawn Pairs on two occasions in 2011(1st) and 2012(3rd), and has fully engaged in helping with two runs of the Triangular Games as well as participated and assisted with every other event hosted by SCC. For all his selfless efforts over the years, the Club has thanked him with the ‘Spirit of Sport’ Award for the lawn bowls Section for 2014 during the 8th SCC Annual Sports Awards. Congratulations to Menon - thoroughly well-deserved!

Tatts 2015 A strong contingent of bowlers from SCC faced off the Australian Tatts in the highly competitive annual competition in April at Bendigo, and they most certainly put up a good fight. To make things better, this was the 50th anniversary of the competition, and a special one it was. Despite missing out on a placing in the general competition, all our teams fought hard and well, resulting in several welldeserved wins. The ‘never say die attitude’ evident during the tour shows that many bowlers in our Section never lost their competitive spirit! Our Ladies Did It Again! “One Up!” The crowd at Tanglin Club’s Bowling Green erupted in cheers as skipper, Shermeen Lim’s final bowl landed next to the jack. That sealed SCC’s victory in the National Ladies’ Pairs 2015. SCC’s representatives, Chng Ming Li and Shermeen Lim advanced into the finals without dropping a game during the round robin matches. The final match against ELBC was uneventful till the SCC team made a costly mistake and dropped 5 shots in one end. The ladies entered the last end with a 2 shot lead (16-14). After ELBC’s skipper drove out SCC’s bowl to get 2 shots on the green, our ladies faced the threat of a sudden death. Shermeen proceeded to draw her last bowl. The crowd held their breath as the bowl rolled toward the head. The crowd went wild as the shot secured the gold medal for SCC.

Pot Games The sky was merciless on the day of the competition. With the Pot Games for lawn bowls brought forward several months and the green closing in two days meant that the Committee had no choice but to declare the competition a draw. Although all involved were disappointed not to have a game, we could tell that the bowlers from SCC and the Tanglin Club were thrilled with the sumptuous dinner, drinks and hospitality provided by SCC. Thanks to all bowlers from SCC and TC for the wonderful company and until next year’s edition! SEA Lawn Bowls Championship Our bowler, Melvin Tan, participated in the South East Asian Lawn Bowls Championship 2015 tournament organised by Bowls Singapore. The tournament was conducted at Kallang Bowls Green from 27 to 28 March 2015 and was participated by four countries in the region - Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. Melvin, one of the top players in Singapore, was involved in two disciplines: Men’s Singles and Men’s Fours, and emerged runner-up in both categories. Congratulations to Melvin for the fantastic achievements! 38

Promoting and Fostering Ties

I

f you were to pass by the Oval Restaurant on Mondays, you would likely see the room packed with players intensely engaged in bridge sessions. Recently, the number of tables have stayed at almost seven at every session, boding well for Members and the Section. This interest and enthusiasm has perhaps motivated some of them to play outside the SCC, not merely to improve their game but to also promote and foster ties between the Section and other bridge associations. Some of the Section Members have ventured out to play at four of the eight National Bridge League events organised by the Singapore Contract Bridge Association (SCBA) so far. This is the Section Members’ first year of participation. It has undoubtedly been a valiant effort, considering that the Section has been around for only three years. Keep going, Members. There are still four more events to go and I am sure all of you will do the Section proud. Some others also took part in the Premier Bridge League (PBL) for the first time again, against some veterans such as Geylang West Bridge Club, Chinese Swimming Club, Serangoon Gardens Country Club, Keppel Club, NUSS, SRC and SCC. It is undoubtedly a good way to promote bridge and foster ties amongst the clubs. Having played four out of seven rounds, the Section did quite well in round four with a victory point score of 14 against Geylang Club’s 16. Well done players! We are very proud of you! The PBL is a series of friendly games where each club hosts a match and provides lunch, dinner or tea; but does not participate

when hosting. The Section was the proud host on 26 April at the Gilmour Room with six tables and each club represented by four players. Snacks at tea break and a delectable dinner were served. It was an occasion to experience good camaraderie and social bonding by the participating bridge fraternity. From all accounts, it was a great success. Local events have not been ignored. Plans to hold sessions for Hari Raya (20 July) and for National Day (13 August) are underway. The Section may combine the AGM along with the National Day session. The Committee is also mindful of the fact that more Section Members are needed to grow the pool of available players. It plans to organise four training sessions in November to initiate new members and to get them started on the game. An enrichment session is also in the works for those interested in finding out more about the nuances of the game to further enhance their play. Look out for specific details in the coming months! Last but not the least, to show its appreciation, the Committee has nominated Trevor Chapman, our Secretary, to receive the ‘Spirit of the Sport’ award at the 8th SCC Sports Awards event. Many thanks to Trevor for his excellent teamwork, commitment and enthusiasm for the game! As can be seen, the Committee’s attempts to foster and promote ties both at the local level and across clubs are laudable and will undoubtedly continue.

CRICKET Scribe: Arjun Kakar Convenor: David Jones

Section members families / CYD members enjoying a day out.

Cricket Section "Derby Day" - 18 April 2015 the first time ever, we had SCC playing each other in a Fonordouble header on the same day. This took place at Dempsey 18 April with Cheetahs taking on Panthers and Cougars

heading up against Tigers in what promised to be the ‘ Battle for the Brag’ within the Club courtyard. The newly laid Dempsey pitch facilities saw some exhilarating cricketing action on display, F&B arrangements by the Club were fantastic and the Section support on a beautiful bright day just added that extra bit of excitement. It was also great to see the Cricket Youth Section turn up to train and carry out match scenario analysis with the senior coaching staff, really using this opportunity to drill down some useful observations. The buzz was clearly felt and enjoyed by all. The day unfolded with the SCA Division 3 game between the SCC Cheetahs and Panthers. Cheetahs won the toss and put the Panthers in to bat and the run fest began with Panthers putting up what looked like an above par total of 234/4 in their allotted 30 overs. Top knocks from Rupert Jakes with 89 (83 balls) and James Watson 73(60). What followed was a scintillating chase by the Cheetahs. Cheetahs got off to a flyer and never really fell behind the run-rate and kept up the tempo with the middle order batsmen contributing and supporting Charles Russel 93(54) and Appu Ponnusamy 42 (51). Cheetahs bought the game in with 3 deliveries to spare. 59.3 overs, 469 runs scored - a sensational entertainment. The afternoon Division 2 encounter, in stark contrast, was a low scoring affair with Cougars electing to bat on what looked like good batting conditions. The bowlers set up the game for the Tigers with Krishna Prasad (2/27), Duncan Robinson (3/25), Paul Immanuel (2/26) and Peter Murray (3/9). Cougars were reduced to 57/7 with the Tigers keeping the pressure up until the lower order combined well with Phil Simmonds 33(52) to stretch the Cougars total to 131 all out. Tigers went in to bat with some cloud cover and some good banter from the Cougars camp which kept things edgy. The Tigers played attacking 40

cricket with Vivek Dixit 33 (30) leading the way. Tigers won the game by 4 wickets in the 20th over. The Derby games, as expected, ignited the can-do spirit - something which every SCC cricketer representing their respective squads looks forward to. The experience right from the build-up was remarkable and the beers later were wellattended too. Overall, it was a great advertisement for Cricket and for Dempsey.

ur social golf event was held on 28 April at Jurong Country Club (JCC). 23 disappointed golfers managed to finish only nine holes, and most of us were left stranded at the half way hut for almost two hours due to the heavy thunderstorm and flashes of blinding lightning. As usual, our Captain, Peter Salt, made light of the day with a well-arranged flow of drinks and a delicious dinner menu at JCC. 11 Section Members travelled to Hong Kong from 7-10 May to play a return match with the Hong Kong Football Club’s golf section at the famous public course - The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course. We played the East Course with lots of blind holes making it a stressful one to play. Sadly we were bitten 6-0 by our worthy opponent.

The only pairs that performed fairly well were Julio Mok and Robin Chua as well as C H Chionh and Bernard Tan. On the whole, the trip was very pleasant and satisfying with great help rendered by Dillon Harbans Singh – the man from Hong Kong. After Hong Kong, we travelled over to Shenzhen, China where we played 18 holes at the Palm Island Course which proved to be an interesting one. During our time there, we stayed at the Legend Hotel, arranged by Dillon. We regret to inform that the well-intentioned trip to Antalya, Turkey in June, which was planned by Philip Gwee, had to be 42

Our Captain, Peter Salt, looks forward to the support of those Members who had travelled to Kuala Lumpur for the away game last year to reciprocate the hospitality of our generous hosts. Captain is seeking 24 competitive golfers with room for four social golfers for the Interport game. Committee Member, Hugh Darwell, will be organising a golfing trip to Johor or Malacca this August. Details of the trip will be forwarded to all Section Members; and, as usual, we look forward to your positive response. Meanwhile, our 3rd and 4th XI men squads were selected and Adrian Cowell will continue as captain with Dirk-Jan Rijks assisting him as the 3rd XI make an assault on the NHL 4 title. Marc Kramer will make his bow as Captain of the 4th XI who will try to improve on their 4th place finish last season and hunt a medal.

Early in the match, Emily was zipping through physical challenges from the Russians, but suddenly, the ball she was attempting to control bobbled, bounced and then…bam! Emily met a Ruffian, sorry Russian’s stick with her head. How Singapore did at the tournament is another story.

All these pre-season talk will not be complete without informing the Section’s move to hire Momentum Fitness, a professional fitness training outfit to get the teams fit for the rigours of the National Hockey season ahead. The idea mooted by SCC’s 1st XI ladies has been a big hit thus far and the tough regiment has had a telling effect on all, with some wishing they could stay in bed the day after. With renewed fitness goals, SCC Hockey is looking forward to delivering success alongside Emily. We dream of gold, together with Team Singapore.

Many stitches later, Emily not only completed the tournament but has resumed training even harder than before and is now an integral member in the completely spirited and revamped Team Singapore national team. Emily, who still finds time to join her SCC teammates in selected pre-season Women’s Premier Liga matches, was in action for Singapore during the 28th SEA Games hockey match held at the Sengkang Stadium. As the 28th SEA Games consume us, the rest of SCC Hockey has been working hard to prepare for the season ahead. Our 2nd XI Men and Women are still in with a fighting chance of winning the NHL 2 and NWL 2 respectively. The 1st XI Men and Women are in the latter stages of the pre-season Premier Ligas, whilst the men used the latter to bleed in new players and lie in mid table, the women have hardly put one step wrong in picking up 7 wins out of 7 to be on the cusp of retaining the Hockey Liga title.

If you would like your child (between 6 to 16 years old) to learn hockey in a professional setting with an elite sports club backing it, you need not look further than “The Hockey SCChool”. Trainings are held every Saturdays at Delta Sports Complex from 10am to Noon. Contact our Head Coach, Kanan Packrisamy at 90217012 for more information. Finally, take note that SCC will entertain Bradfield College on 3 July 2015.

W

e’re already at the halfway mark of 2015 – it’s amazing how quickly time flies when you’re having fun. And the netball girls sure have been enjoying themselves this year. Plenty has happened since we last shared updates of our netballing activities.

SCC League In our 4th year of organising the SCC league, the season came to an end in May and culminated in an endof-season awards night and party at the Gilmour Room. SCC hosted the participating clubs from the ladies’ league, as well as the mixed league, for a night of revelry in May. And it goes without saying, the awards night was a roaring success, with teams intermingling and bonding over one too many drinks. Big thanks to Mads, our social secretary, for putting on a great party; Anna and Rachael, for organising the ladies’ league; and, Nan and Jacq Ann for coordinating the umpires. Apart from the partying which the netball ladies thoroughly enjoy, the SCC teams had a great run during the tournament. Serving as a lead-up to the National League in June, the teams took this opportunity to strengthen team play and explore playing combinations. In the words of our Hawks Captain, Alice, the first team is seeing marked improvements in team play as the league progressed, setting ourselves up well for the upcoming league. As a relatively new team, players are coming together well both on and off the court. It’s also the first year that SCC has fielded a new team, Kites - with a mixture of players, both new and those returning from injury. The strength of this team that emerged as the league progressed was the players’ versatility; notably, Team Captain Lee-Anne, and the surprise kick-ass defender. And on to our Eagles team under the captaincy of Fathima who performed really well to clinch second place in Division 3 – with new players coming into the mix and older players returning to the game, the players gelled well to consistently deliver results on court. The mixed team also saw a great season with Harriett as our captain, and here are a few words from her: “We had another great season of mixed this year, with its popularity growing among the Members of the Netball Section. Many weeks, we were over-subscribed and we had to ask for volunteers to stand down which was a great change from previous seasons. We had a consistent core of players from previous systems, but also some great new players, both guys and girls, who were keen to get involved. On the court, we continued to be competitive, though ending up middle of table in the league overall, there was definite progression in our play from previous years. Standout players for the season were Storm Dalati, who seemed to play a different position every week and Paul Foster who makes a big difference for us in defence – as proven by a 44

couple of losses the weeks he was away! All in all, it was a solid season where we were able to introduce some new players to the game and we are looking forward to the next one!” Netballers take on Bangkok What is now a regular tour fixture in the netball calendar, a team of SCC players headed to Bangkok in May to participate in a yearly club tournament organised by the Bangkok Southerners. While it has always been a blast year after year, more for our off-court adventures, the team this year walked away as runner’s up of the tournament. It was an incredible performance by all and what a way to raise the profile of the Club in a hallmark club tournament in Asia. Special mention goes to Katy, our star shooter who took to playing keeper in the tournament and our JSMs - Munch, Jini and Jacq who brought the speed to the mid-court. While it is tempting to share some of their off-court antics, we’ll stick to the saying, ‘what happens on tour stays on tour’.

Section of the Year - Rugby

T

he Societe Generale Rugby Section’s outstanding 2014/15 season reached its culmination on 15 May at the 8th SCC Annual Sports Awards.

Mike Cosnett’s commitment to the Section’s cause was rewarded with the ‘Spirit of Sport’ award. A huge thanks on behalf of the Section, Mike. A replica of the ‘Oscar’ statuette does not even come close to matching your input. We then saw Elroy Tan narrowly miss out on ‘Sports Boy of the Year’. After a break out year, Elroy made his debut in the 1st XV and made the Singapore National team training squad ahead of the Asian Five Nations. We all look forward to seeing bigger and better things in 2015/16. Sadly there was a bit more disappointment to come with 1st XV skipper Peter McFeely missing out on ‘Sports Man of the Year’. Having captained the Singapore side to promotion to Division 1 in the Asian Five Nations and the 1st XV to the Premiership final we all thought he would be a shoo-in for the award. Next year, with the Premiership Cup in hand, he will be. When the Section was denied again for ‘Sports Feat of the Year’, and, having had all four teams make the Grand Final with two premierships, it looked like it might be a disappointing night.

Finally, the Section was bestowed with the highest honour available in sport at the SCC. In a year that saw a big leap forward in training standards; consistency of results; and, with all four teams appearing on Grand Final day with two titles out of a possible three in tow, the icing was finally put on the cake with the ‘Section of the Year’ award. The large Section contingent present made sure the moment was celebrated accordingly and that the silverware was kept suitably hydrated. It has been a very successful year for the Section. Well done to all Section Members from the Academy all the way through to the over-35s. We have set a great platform for next season and beyond. Updates: On 20 June, a large Nomads touring party headed to Ho Chi Minh City to play the Geckos. Nomads captain Sam Flint will undoubtedly have an exciting tour report for the next edition.

Fear not, the World Champion Growlers to the rescue. After a brilliant year that included a Grand Final appearance, a Manila 10s title and the Vets 10s world championship, the Societe Generale Growlers were awarded ‘Team of the Year’. The back of the room erupted in hearty cheer and the Growlers received the adulation of the SCC Sports community. Team of the Year - SCC Growlers

s the 2014/15 Cosmo season is complete for the SCC FIRST Team, let’s reflect…

The whole season for The FIRSTS has been aimed at reaching key objectives. The first and foremost was to retain the League title which was closer than expected; this was achieved by the second last game of the season and it means that the FIRST team has now retained the League title 7 years in a row which has not been achieved by any team in the modern day Cosmo League. The second objective was to retain the League Cup, this was a tricky task as the draw was not kind however on 6 June at Turf City the FIRST team beat long standing rivals the Casuals 3-0, which was a replay of the previous year’s cup final. The win means that the FIRST team has won the cup 6 years in a row.

The team has undergone many changes throughout the years but the coaching staff of Owen “Benetiz” Monaghan, Andrew “Hutcho” Hutcheon plus others like Adam Bowden, Stevie “The Blind Cobbler” Rogers, and Ronnie “Plays for every team” Smollet have ensured that the team is competitive, strong and very difficult to beat. This feat would not have been possible without Graham “The Convener” Dickson and Len B and Dirk Paulsen who have and still do devote time and effort to keep the squad at the pinnacle of the football tree in Singapore. Congratulations to the entire 14/15 squad and to all the previous squad members who all have contributed in some way. You all have been a part of 7 fantastic years and we hope it continues into the 15/16 season. Guys, you all are a credit to the Club well done.

SQUASH

Squash at the SCC: 50 Years & Counting

T

he game of squash at the SCC was conceived 50 years ago but it took a few years of troubled gestation before the Club’s first new sports section in more than three decades saw the light of day. SGM 5 March 1968 - Resolution “That in compliance with Rule 32 (d), the committee be authorised to spend approximately $21,000 to construct two squash courts on the site of the present old billiard room” The result was a comfortable 62 in favour with 19 against. However, this wide margin masks what was at the time a very divisive issue within the Club. The proposer was newly elected president, Derick Reid, who faced opposition led by the past - and seven time – president, the revered and ‘Grand Old Man of the Club’, Andrew Gilmour. As part of his anti-squash position, Gilmour had suggested that the squash courts proposal be delayed and become part of a larger plan encompassing the renovation of the Club building. He even suggested that the SCC should pursue a ‘special’ arrangement with the Tanglin Club, whereby, their recently enlarged squash facilities could be co- utilised by SCC Members. But Derick Reid was not swayed – he was determined to build two courts at the SCC. Gilmour complained that the poor SGM attendance was a major factor contributing to the result; there being about 2,000 Members at the time. He later graciously conceded that his stance opposing the Resolution had been wrong. Work commenced soon after the SGM and the two new courts were completed in June 1968. It was fortuitous that two courts could be squeezed into the space of the old

Extracted from the Singapore Cricket Club 150th Anniversary History Book: The social side of SCC life is important to Club camaraderie and team spirit on the field too, and it boosts the Club’s coffers - above, “Farmyard Frolics” night hosted in 1982 by the squash section with squash convenor Tony Hendey and player Bill Gartshore on stage.

bar. But the resulting low ceiling meant high-lobs were not possible although in the mid-eighties, this was alleviated somewhat when the floors of both courts were lowered by about a metre. The courts were further improved by the installation of glass back walls and the opening up of the back walls during the major club renovations in 2005. The Squash Section took off and numbered 200 Members in the early 1970’s, and now has 358 Members including 47 Junior Sports Members. Squash at the SCC, along with Singapore in general, grew quickly in popularity from the 1970’s. Regional and overseas tours multiplied with just one highlight being the 12-day tour to South Africa in 1992 when 12 ladies and 12 men from the SCC played against teams in Cape Town and Johannesburg. In keeping with the SCC’s position as a premier sporting club, the Squash Section has become a regular top performer in the Singapore national squash leagues – frequently winning the men’s and ladies’ Premier League titles.

ctivities in June The 28th SEA Games took place in early

June and our very own Wee Khee Yen, who recently won the SCC Sportsgirl of the Year title represented Singapore in the women’s tennis category. The Singapore women’s team faced a tough challenge in the first round as they were drawn against top seeds Thailand, but Khee Yen and her team mate did not make it easy for their Thai opponents – one of whom was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon several years ago. While the Thai team won with a 3-0 margin, each game was closely contested. The experience gained from playing in this high level of tennis will certainly help juniors like Khee Yen in improving their game. At the end of June, the SCC men’s and ladies’ teams took part in the interclub doubles tournament. Last year, we surprised even ourselves by winning the overall club champion title. This wasn’t planned, but was a result of the combined performance of the SCC teams and certainly it was a cause for extra celebration. The Men’s C team came in runners-up while the Ladies’ A team was champions. In the next issue of the magazine, we will share the results of our June interclub tournament.

courts at the SCC, our ‘temporary’ home has been at the Savitar Tennis Centre at the Fairmont Hotel - not far from the club. The tennis grounds consist of clay courts and two astroturf courts. So if you’re looking for some tennis action on ‘red dirt’, join the SCC tennis social on Fridays from 5 - 7pm. Every last Friday of the month, the tennis social will culminate with a ‘makan kechil’ (light bites) and bonding with fellow section members back at the SCC. Alternatively, for private hitting sessions, you can book a court at Savitar Tennis Centre and part of the court fees will be reimbursed by SCC. If you haven’t received the details on how to book a court sent in April, please contact Ken, our tennis executive at ken.ang@scc.org.sg.

Beaming smiles at the Sports Awards Night

SCC Sports Awards Night The SCC Sports Awards night was held on 15 May 2015, and the tennis section members won three awards that night! Congratulations to Fiona Pilling who won the Spirit of the Sport award for her efforts in boosting the social tennis scene at the club. Wee Khee Yen received a standing ovation as she went on stage to receive the Sportsgirl of the Year award. She joined the club at 12 years old and over the last few years, has dedicated herself to playing the sport seriously and travels very often to play in various junior and women’s competitions. She has also been an instrumental member of the team. Nilma Missir-Boissac who has been the ladies’ captain for several years and is involved in recruiting talented juniors to the Club was awarded the Sportswoman of the Year award. The Ladies’ A team was also a finalist in the team of the year category. Congratulations to all! Serves, Volleys, Croissants...and AC/DC? As part of

the tennis teams’ off-season practice just before SCC’s courts closed in late April, a morning breakfast session of tennis involving players from the Mens A, B, C and Ladies’ teams played in a series of doubles games. Some were still feeling the effects of a very jolly Friday and were struggling to find their form. However, we found the perfect antidote for on-court sluggishness. A potent concoction of AC/DC music played courtside helped to pump up the players under the hot sun, and pretty soon the players started to whip out winning smashes, down the line shots and amazing volleys. Thank you to Adam Sturmer for organising it and look out for the next edition!

Guess who? Can you guess who the two ladies in the photo are?

All set for a colourful tennis session!

Here are some hints: the lady on the left was SCC’s ladies’ captain for many years. Her careful placement of shots and consistency tends to drive some players into self-destruction mode! The lady on the right was an eight-time ladies’ singles winner of the SCC Club Championships – from 1986 to 1993. Her serve and volley game is her trademark. When combined, the two ladies’ form a deadly doubles duo and have won numerous doubles titles both at the SCC and Tanglin Club. They, along with the rest of the SCC ladies team members from the early 70s to the early 2000s won the interclub titles for the Club, such as the Martha Young Cup. Both continue to be avid players of the sport. Can you guess who they are?

SCC juniors and friends were treated to a session of ‘Doubles 101’ with Melissa Pine and her colleague Mark where they shared a few tips on playing a compact game of doubles. Melissa plays on the Ladies’ A team and is also the tournament director of the season-ending WTA Championships in Singapore. Some of the tips included moving in tandem with your partner as though you’re linked by a string. Second, the team that controls the net in doubles is most likely to win the point. So players were encouraged to come to the net more often. This session was useful in having the juniors further acquainted with the doubles game, apart from singles which they more often play.
