The 67th edition of the Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s (the SCC 7s) will feature worldclass teams from around the globe and will take place from 31st October to 2nd November (Friday to Sunday) at the Padang. Last year’s thrilling final saw newcomers the Asia Pacific Dragons, boasting a host of international 7s stars defeat a strong Penguins side, not short of internationals themselves, 43-5 to claim the Ablitt Cup. The SCC 7s has become part of the fabric of Singapore rugby, and many renowned stars of the game of world rugby have graced the Padang during the 7s. Continuing with the success of the tournament, the SCC 7s returns in 2014 with new top-class professional club teams that promise to deliver the same brand of exciting 7s rugby that has established the SCC 7s as one of the premier international club tournaments in the world. In addition to last year’s runner-up, Penguins, returning teams such as Daveta, Randwick, Sunnybank and many more will make their way to the Padang again this year to make a comeback for the title. 2

CLUB NEWS
Dear Members,
As I sit composing this message as well as my emotions following the tragic loss of our all too recently departed President, it is with dread that I realise our leader and my friend will no longer be with us to lead the General Committee and his beloved SCC into 2015 and beyond. We extend our deepest sympathies at this time to his beloved Winifred and to his daughters Hayley, Tabitha and, son-in-law Paul. I have received innumerable communications over these past two days from around the world and all have paid touching and loving tribute to Mike and to his many achievements and contributions both on and off the sporting fields of Singapore and the region throughout his 44 years of service to the SCC.
Sher Baljit Singh Johal Deputy President Singapore Cricket Club
Amongst the common themes that run throughout these messages are not only the personal expressions of profound loss, but also of our duty to protect the legacy that Michael has left with us. Since Mike’s election to the SCC Presidency in April, editions of ‘The President’s Message’ appearing in this magazine have touched upon his plans and high hopes for the future of the SCC. I can assure Members that the GC, in our term of office, will continue to strive to meet Mike’s expectations and see his wishes come to fruition. With the foregoing in mind I take this opportunity to commend you the “italicised” ‘President’s Message’ hereunder that he sadly never saw into print, but that he would wish us to convey to the membership of the Club. Needless to say we shall respect and do our level best to ensure we make him as proud as he was on the night of his election into the Presidency of a Club that was his passion.

CLUB NEWS
“There is much going on at your Club nowadays so I would like to touch base with you on some of the important things that are either happening now or are in the pipeline ready to come on stream in the near future. DIALOGUE SESSION The first item of some significance and a date to mark in your diaries is a planned ‘Dialogue Session’ with Members scheduled for 5 November. Such a gathering with Members is slowly becoming a regular fixture in our calendar as it enables your Committee to keep you abreast of key matters (Finance, Club Development etcetera) and, of course, gives all Members present the chance to comment, ask questions and make suggestions in an informal way. Please try to make this session if you are able to do so.
A. Michael Grice President Singapore Cricket Club
At the mention of “Development” I would like to advise Members that the Steering Committee is hard at work behind the scenes. Tender documents were issued in August and contractor bids will be reviewed in early September (from 5 companies that have expressed interest in our development project). The physical work is then expected to begin soon after the conclusion of the Night Race Fiesta. Priority will be given to get the new dining area up and running by December – more details and a further update in the next issue! 2015 INITIATIVES As you know, next year is a major one in Singapore’s history, as 2015 will welcome the 50th anniversary of Singapore’s independence, a major milestone in the ongoing development of the country itself and a great cause for major celebrations. Your Club, which has a long and historical presence here is an integral part of this, especially from a sports perspective, so, your Committee would like very much for the Club to be part of next year’s fun and activities. A team of senior Members have formed a Task Force to look into this and they have already met with representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Our ideas were met with positive warmth so talks and development on this front will be on-going to ensure we come up with a community-based programme which will enable us to participate next year in some way. I think this is an important part of our future activity as we are a Club whose membership is now almost 70% Singaporean so I am sure that you will agree with me that we would want to be seen being involved in a positive manner in any way we can. Other initiatives include a review of the Committee’s structure and terms of office, a matter for the ‘Dialogue Session’ to discuss when draft proposals will be ready for presentation, discussion and your consideration; a review of Dempsey Field is in place regarding its usage in 2015 and what extra facilities may be needed there as the Padang is going to be used for NDP extensively for the 50th Anniversary. Dempsey Field will be under much pressure in 2015 to meet all our sporting commitments so we will be looking at how we may be able to put in extra (and better) facilities for our sporting and playing Members to cope with the additional usage expected there next year. Finally, the recently agreed changes passed by Members at the last AGM mainly governing Membership have been approved fully by the Registrar of Societies and are in the process of being implemented (as advised generally by e-mail blast recently).”

Obituary
Anthony Michael Grice 29 October 1943 - 24 August 2014
The consummate Clubman Anthony Michael Grice was his full name, but to us he will always be known as Mike. Mike Grice expressed, by the way he lived his life, the very best of the SCC. Mike’s passion and commitment embraced the entire Club, to whose overall interest he was always dedicated. He demonstrated this passion and commitment during one General Meeting, when the Club was discussing whether or not to change a rule. One Member asked the GC to explain what they understood the core values of the Club to be. Mike leapt from his chair, declared, ‘I can answer that,’ and for the next 10 minutes, pacing across the floor, he held the meeting spellbound, with a heartfelt and compelling exposition of the values for which the Club should stand. Mike was born in 1943 in Yorkshire, England, but made his life, by choice, in South-east Asia. Coming out to this region to work for a trading company, he joined the SCC in 1970, and embraced all the Club had to offer. Over the years he was heavily involved, on and off the pitch, in all the major field sports of the Club. Just as the young businessman working for Procter & Gamble grew into the independent businessman building the successful firm of Dawnridge Sports, so too did the young Saturday XI cricketer grow into the devoted umpire of later years. Notwithstanding Mike’s very personal understanding of LBW, the soccer, rugby and cricket sections all gained a great deal, for a long time, from his personal commitment to
their many endeavours. He was especially keen to develop the sporting talent and enthusiasm of younger people, and as one of the real pioneers on the issue he played a crucial role in helping to build the Club’s commitment to junior sports and junior sports membership. Mike’s devotion to the Club and to sports brought welldeserved recognition in 2010 when the Club made him a Life Member, and he found himself, after years of insisting he would never do any such thing, sitting on the General Committee. He made a very personal mark here as well, in so many ways. Such concepts as spending quality time with good friends who share common interests, pursuing excellence on and off the pitch, learning through sport such important life values as fair play, team work, sportsmanship, perseverance and integrity —when Mike spoke of them he made them all seem so real, because to him they were so much more than just words. It was surely right and proper that Mike’s last voluntary duty to the Club he loved so much was to lead it as our President. And it is perhaps some small comfort that Mike spent his last day with us presiding over a successful tournament in our signature sport. Mike Grice was simply irreplaceable, as our President, a devoted member, a steadfast and reliable comrade, and above all as a friend. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go to Winnie and to Michael’s family. The baton he carried so well now passes to all of us.

The Great War and the Making of our World By Prof. Brian Farrell
The well attended Symposium at the Padang Restaurant
O
n Monday the 4th of August, 2014, the Club hosted a very special day-long event that took participants far away from the playing field, but made good use of the wide ranging expertise of our Members, and leveraged another of our greatest assets: our history. The date marked the exact centennial anniversary of the British declaration of war on Germany, thereby committing the British Empire—then including Singapore as a Crown Colony—to what became the First World War. Together with Singapore History Consultants, the Changi Museum, and the Department of History, National University of Singapore, the Club organized a symposium titled Then and Now: The Great War and the Making of our World. The program involved an early morning service of commemoration and remembrance at the nearby Cenotaph, and a day of presentations and discussions devoted to various aspects of the First World War, including such themes as the wartime experience, the impact of the war on the century that followed, and the connections between that world and our own. Participants also enjoyed watching episodes or scenes from documentary and feature films and television series, as well as the usual excellent Club fare for breakfast and lunch.
Members were joined by dignitaries from the Australian, British, Indian and New Zealand High Commissions and the Belgian Embassy, paying their respects in front of a global audience. Some 100 Members and guests then returned to the clubhouse to participate in the symposium, held in the Padang Restaurant. All agreed with the President’s opening remarks during which he pointed out how appropriate it was that the event was being held in a building already well established by 1914, one in which many Members heard the news of the outbreak of war—leading some to volunteer to fight, some of whom were never to return. The memorial plaque in the front lobby facing the Member Services Desk stands as a poignant reminder of the very history to which the President referred, surely a signature characteristic of our venerable club. Members and guests heard four presentations, three by Club Members Brian Farrell, Maitrii Aung Thwin and Jeyathurai, one by a welcome guest, Phil McConnell, addressing the topics of Global Shadows of the Great War, Asia and the Great War, Singapore and the Great War, and Representations of the Great War. Film clips depicting soccer games between the trenches during the 1914 Christmas Truce, the music of Oh What a Lovely War, and the immortal Blackadder comedy series kept proceedings lively, as did robust question and discussion sessions following each presentation. For this one very special anniversary, the Club paid a signature tribute to the longer history of the wider world beyond the playing field of which it remains very much a part, and participants reflected on ‘then and now’ and the many changes over time, in what all agreed was an ideal setting.
Tribute to the memorial
Thanks to the diligent efforts of the staff of Singapore History Consultants, the service at the Cenotaph was covered live, and broadcast worldwide, by BBC World Service TV newschannel. Club Members featured prominently, Steve Thompson acting as Master of Ceremony, President Michael Grice laying a wreath on behalf of the Club, and Jeyathurai A and Brian Farrell being interviewed on camera about the function, and the history. Triangular SCC vs RBSC
A RIOT OF COLOURS ON THE GREEN by Dr K U Menon
SCC HOSTS 13th Annual Triangular Meet & Interport Games, 15–17 August Notwithstanding the ills of an imperial system, colonialism left its enduring legacy in its quaint clubs and games like cricket and lawn bowls which continues to bind former colonies, peoples, races and religions together. Clubs were part of the fabric of colonial life. Today they are oases of civility. And so it was that pedestrians and tourists alike, along St Andrew’s Road in mid-August, gawked and stared as some 50 odd bowlers in colorful T-shirts and with equally colourful bowls, from the Royal Bangkok Sports Club(RBSC) and the Kowloon Bowling Green Club (KBGC) gathered to do battle against SCC’s finest, on our sprawling Green - fronted by the Padang, the Victorian splendor of the old Supreme Court in the background and the spectacular new Marina Bay skyline against a blistering blue sky. It was SCC’s turn to host this 13th Annual Meet and our bowlers practiced long and hard. The Committee took pains to select its best teams, whilst giving all our bowlers an opportunity to play, driven by the imperative to recapture the Triangular Trophy, after almost 8 years in the wilderness. Unfortunately that was not to be and SCC came in 2nd Runner-up with (4 rink wins/2 draws) 10 points to RBSC’s (5 rink wins/2 draws) 12 and KBGC’s (7 rink wins) 14. In the Interport Games however, we did well - SCC won both games against KBGC and RBSC with scores in favour of SCC 89/80 shots and 102/88 respectively.

On Sunday, it was time to relax over a splendid repast and drinks at the Padang Restaurant, appropriately themed LATINO LOCA - a celebration of Latin Music and Dance. A fullblooded Latin Band and a Salsa dance couple entertained the audience . Club President Michael Grice addressed the gathering and several other GC Members also joined the occasion. Dr Neo keeps close eye on proceedings Our bowlers and guests danced and drank through the night and some were fortunate also to walk away with grand prizes in our lucky draw. It was well into midnight when the event drew to a close as we bid farewell to old friends and promised to gather yet again for battle in the lush Greens of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club in 2015.

While the Cricket Club of India had, predictably, too much firepower for hosts Singapore Cricket Club and South Africa’s Rowlin National Cricket Academy to qualify top of pool B, it wasn’t all plain sailing. SCC went within a boundary of chasing down CCI’s 169 while Rowlin finished 12 short chasing 200.

Inter-port game in Bangkok with Polo Club and Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC)
G
reetings to all our Section Members! We are glad to share some updates.
We have just completed the Handicap White Ball Volunteer Tournament. Bak Choon and Jason made their way to the finals during which Bak Choon gave a good game to Jason. Currently, the Handicap Russian Tournament is in progress. There are a couple more tournaments coming up - please do sign up or come and support us. We now have new tablecloths on our tables and they are in “tip-top” condition ready for an enjoyable game of snooker and billiards. Please do come and experience it at the SCC Men’s Bar.
The Inter-port game took place in Bangkok from 26-29 June with the Polo Club and Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC). There were 16 of us including a wonderful team of 12 players and supporters. We are glad to receive positive response for this trip and the players were: Victor Yeong, Bak Choon, Thin Wah, Matthew, Jason Teo (New Member), Rags, Sunil, Chin Leong, Rod Murchison, Peter Gilchrist (New), Joe Yip and Jason Tan. We are glad to have Peter Gilchrist (World Billiards Champion) to represent us. He played an excellent game and made the highest break, narrowly missing a century. Peter shared his experience with RBSC boys on Billiards, how to “top table” and a few “trick shots” – overall an enjoyable and entertaining time. Both games with the Polo Club and RBSC were very close with our Bangkok boys emerging victors. Our friendship has strengthened through these years and we look forward to our yearly games.

RSL Bowls Club (3 July) The Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) is a support organization for men and women who have served or are serving in the Australian Defense Force. Clubs were established as a place for war veterans to build on their comradeship. The venues were often located on land granted by the State government and over time known generally as RSL Clubs. This particular club from Perth comprised about 25 bowlers and they had a friendly mixed match with SCC bowlers on a weekday. They were perplexed and challenged by our slow moving, heavy Green but had a great time with dinner and drinks with our bowlers at the Deli. Souvenirs were exchanged between our Convenor and Captain RSL. MOSMAN Bowling Club (12 July) Mosman Bowling Club (NSW) traces its origins to the turn of the century in 1902 when their Greens were established. They came with about 15 bowlers and we played 5 rinks of triples. SCC won 3-2 rinks and a close aggregate score of 8375 shots. Our Treasurer, Derek presented the SCC plague to the visiting team and prizes to the winners over dinner and drinks an plaque to Mosm Derek presents served in the courtyard.

New Initiatives
A
new numbering system for bridge players across all five clubs using the Bridgemate system is being considered. This implies having a common number for each player. When implemented, it would make a big difference in promoting inter-club events and competitions, as well as making life much easier for those who play at different clubs regularly. Besides, the merits of having a common player number across the Clubs will, firstly, make it easier for many players who play the game at more than one place to remember his / her number. Secondly, the player number is now portable. With a common player number, it simplifies matters when Bridge Clubs are using the Bridgemate system to score in competitions, be it an open competition event or invitational friendly games. The organiser is no longer required to create new names and numbers when the participants have already been assigned a number at their own Clubs. To put into practice, some initial developmental
at 2pm. A minimum of 6 pairs of players have been invited to participate. Twenty four boards will be played, followed by buffet dinner and drinks along with all the other Section Members from various clubs. The Scorebridge Software license has been renewed and 10 new packs of cards and bidding cards have been bought. Members are all set to participate in the special events. The first special event in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri was held on Monday 28 July where Members enjoyed a good game and tasty finger food. The AGM on 18 August heralded a new committee which will undoubtedly come up with new initiatives during its term of office. Stay tuned!
Keen Concentration
work is necessary. For example, the Clubs need to agree on a common numbering system and there is a need to merge player databases. There may be a need to have a working system for the databases to be updated periodically. All these are being considered and explored. League Update The results during June and July continued to be mixed across all divisions. Lions bounced back with 3 consecutive victories but still remained in third place, some distance off the pace. Cougars and Panthers were also in third place in divisions 2 and 3 respectively, but as the season winds down, unfortunately silverware does not look likely.
Lawn Bowls Evening The Cricket Section held a mid-season get together, the highlight of which was an Inter-Section Lawn-Bowls competition. The Saturday XI trio of Ashok Mahtani, Anne-Marie Tanke and John Thornback triumphed over Lions trio, Andre de Lange, Duncan Bond and Mike Burns in a competitive final. A big thank you to Hugh Darwell for organising the event for the Cricket Section and Members of the Lawn Bowls Section who provided their guidance and supervision and helped make it such an enjoyable evening. Without their help, it would have been a somewhat chaotic affair!
On a more positive note, there were several notable individual performances, the highlights of which were Arit Dutta’s 173 in 119 balls for Tigers, the highest score for SCC for several years, and Suresh Kalpathy’s incredible 5 for 7 for Jaguars. Inter-Section Lawn Bowls Competition
Saturday XI vs World XI On 11 July, the Saturday XI played its annual fixture against Mike Mehaffey’s World XI, keen for revenge after last year’s loss. After winning the toss and putting the World XI in to bat, some very tight bowling and excellent fielding saw the World XI restricted to 174-7 off 35 overs, despite Mike Mehaffey retiring on 50 for the second consecutive year. Highlights for the Saturday XI were Saltie’s 3 wickets and Ash’s 3 stumpings. The best was yet to come with the Saturday XI cantering to victory without losing a wicket, the first instance of this happening in the series’ 14-year history. Starring with the bat were Ash, Rufus and Chris Rogers, all treating the World XI with disdain. During the course of the evening, words such as ‘humiliation’ and ‘annihilation’ were heard being mentioned, although Saturday XI skipper Hugh Darwell denied this. World XI captain Mike Mehaffey was not available for comment, but was rumoured to have later mentioned ‘we’re still leading the series 7-5’. Scores: World XI 174-7 in 35 overs (Mike Mehaffey 50 retired, Jamie Kruger 35. Peter Salt 3-32). Saturday XI 175-0 in 30.4 overs (Ash Raivadera 50 retired, Rufus Frere-Smith 50 retired, Chris Rogers 45 not out)

CC Darts Section Exco organised the very first SCC Darts Internal League this year. We had an overwhelming participation response from our Section. The league commenced on 7 May 2014 and ended on 2 July 2014. Apart from our monthly darting at the Oval Restaurant, SCC Darts Exco decided to execute this internal league to sharpen our skills and promote more game play. We had 5 groups in total with 3 to 4 participants in a team. We started invading the Men’s Bar almost 4 to 5 times a week to dart. In group stages the team played 301. The finals were held at the Oval Restaurant on 2 July, and 501 were played by the darters. I would like to thank our SCC President Mr Michael Grice, Deputy President Mr Sher Baljit Singh and Chairman Games Control Board Mr T. Ravi Chandran for gracing the occasion and for their presence. We truly appreciate your support for the Darts Section. The first SCC Darts Internal League was pulled off with great success and I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to our Captain, Philip Ng and Vice-Captain, Jeroen Goldman. Padang Derby win returns SCC to the forte of Singapore Hockey
T
he inaugural season of the National Hockey League 1, which replaces the old Premier League, was met with many skeptics from the start, but the manner in which the local hockey scene has come alive once again surprised many. The Singapore Cricket Club’s 1st XI who finished 5th in the last two seasons of the Premier League were the toast of many hockey fans this season within and without the Club. The impressive performances were not just easy on the eye; it was also consistent and made the old guards of the local hockey supremacy take notice, but not too much, as the case turned out to be. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, on 29 June, the mother of all hockey derbies between the Padang clubs SCC and SRC took place at the ill located Sengkang Sports Complex (The National Hockey Stadium). Already missing their international capped centre back and player-coach Ken Forbes, SCC was cautious of their chances, but the form in which they have been to date meant that SRC were going to be in for a hard time. The feisty game saw 8 green and yellow cards and at one point both teams were playing with nine men and at another point SRC was playing with eight. This state of affairs did not stop both sides from exhibiting high quality, end-to-end and razor

paced hockey. With SRC talisman Sunil Prasad dropping to their second team, our fiercest rivals were missing some leadership and SCC took the match to them. At 1-1, Ben Rogers put us 2-1 up and the scent of victory was in the air. Alas SRC kept coming back. Being denied a win was simply not an option. With less than two minutes to play, with fatigue setting into both sets of players, and with the game nicely poised at 2-2, our players were not going to settle for the draw, we wanted to win! Win we did. Neatly building out of defence, the ball threaded to our right half who freed it to our right wing and with our textbook training routine of baseline positioning, it was passed back to the penalty spot, where our newest recruit Mark Hollingsworth was waiting to bury not just the winning goal, but also the ghost of not beating our neighbours. It was a mammoth goal and at the final whistle, I must say it was an honour to be part of this team that has achieved this small but very meaningful achievement. The future looks bright for SCC hockey and our place in the fore of the local hockey scene is now firmly locked down. SCC 1st XI Men finished 3rd in the league this season to claim their first top three finish in 6 seasons!

I
t’s been a busy couple of months for the Netball Section, with great successes for the ladies teams in both the National Energiser League and Bangkok Tour.
National Energiser League (ENL) The Hawks were in division 3 of the ENL again this year. We had a fairly strong and very committed team this year; we came in 3rd place, down to mere goal difference and only two points behind the winners. Had we won the penultimate game that we so sorely lost in the final quarter against the eventual winners of the league, we would have won our division. This year is the closest we have been to being promoted. Considering a number of the players are new to the team, this is a very good result. This year the Ospreys/Eagles were placed in Division 7 of the ENL and found themselves playing against a number of teams that they had not played against before. Overall, the Eagles/Ospreys were placed 3rd in the division which was a great result for them given a number of injuries to players and a number of players being away for key matches. For a couple of matches, the team only had 5 or 6 players which meant some very tough games for the team and so we were delighted to have finished 3rd.
SCC Flamingos in Bangkok
Bangkok Tour 2014 The The Netball Section sent a team comprising 7 senior players and 5 JSMs to Bangkok in June to compete in the Southerners Invitational Tournament. The tournament itself was hosted on a gloriously sunny day at the Patana International School Bangkok. Due to high demand, the usual number of 10 teams saw an increase to 12 teams this year. The organisers foresaw very hot weather and at the last minute organised a new venue (originally meant to play at the NIST school) to host the tournament, allowing for all teams to play all matches indoors! Performance - Competition was very fierce throughout the day – we drew reigning champions HK Valley and Discovery Bay in our pool. We missed a spot in the finals playoffs series by a mere goal to the Discovery Bay team and 2 goals to Valley who ultimately went on to become the tournament champions. Again, we not only improved our positioning compared to the tournament in 2012, but we did so against much stronger opposition. Special mention to our player of the day – Rebecca Gabriel. AGM The Netball Section held our Annual General Meeting in the Gilmour Room in July, where we were delighted to be joined by the SCC President, Mr Michael Grice, Chairman of the Games Control Board Mr T. Ravi Chandran, and Financial Controller, Ms Adeline Tan. Stay tuned for more information on the Netball Section’s Annual Inter-Section Tournament, which is scheduled to take place on 15 November. We are always looking for new players, regardless of experience, to join us, so if you’re interested please email sccnetball@gmail.com.

Triumphant World Champions - SCC Growlers
The World Cup 10s: SCC Growlers World Champions, SCC First X, oh so close Men’s Open Tournament The playoffs on the Saturday were mixed for SCC 1st Team: two wins (SCC 29 - Chang Mai Tigers 14; SCC 8 – Wanderers 0) and two losses (Borneo Eagles 31 – SCC 7; Bucks 17 – SCC 17). But it was enough to get them into the semis at the Stadium the following day and a re-match against Bucks. In a nail biting encounter, it stayed scoreless until after 5 minutes when Simon Morris’ pass allowed Euan Kenworthy to score. However, after 9 minutes, Bucks cut through the SCC defence and scored making the halftime score 7-7. Despite their strong start and a huge effort at the breakdown by big Shane Dewar, Flinty and the Silver Slammer Tim Robinson, it was some costly errors and a lack of discipline that let Bucks back into the game, to finally run out winners by 7-17. Vets Tournament While Bucks were the bane of the SCC 1st Team’s campaign, the Growlers got their own back for the Club with Bucks Vets getting their proverbial bottoms handed to them in the Vets Semi-Final.
The breakthrough for the Growlers came after just 2 minutes with Casey Mee making a break on the Growlers own 22, offloading to Brendan Wombat Nolan who sprinted a full 60 metres before doing a ridiculous swan impression as he touched down. The crowd loved it and on came the “Kallang Roar”. Growlers 31Bucks Vets 7. The Growlers went into the final against a big confident Wanderers Vets Team (fresh from a victory against a team of Ex-National Players). However, the Growlers were fitter, stronger and, well, better than the Wanderers. Casey, David Griffiths (Captain), Craig Mounsey, Oli Hall, and Wombat being exceptional out wide. During the whole 20 minutes of the match there were only three scrums and two lineouts; the rest of the time the ball was in hand - in the Growlers’ hands to be precise. Four minutes into the first half and it was 5-0 to the Growlers following a pickup from Casey who sprinted 50 metres to score. Two minutes later Casey broke away again passing to Oli who cut through the defence before making a lovely offload for Andrew Starkey to score in the corner 10-0. The second half was the same story. A huge defensive effort by Starkey, Big Andy Douglas, Andrew Bennett, Crispin Swan and Marc Leaver among others snuffing out what attacking options Wanderers had. Even in the scrum, the combined tonnage of the Wanderers’ front five couldn’t hold the power of the Growlers’ front five. A penalty try and then another try by Craig Mounsey put it beyond doubt. Growlers 24 Wanders 0, which makes the Growlers the Rugby World Club 10s Veterans World.

SCC FIRST’S - The Cosmopolitan League Nearly Four Decades and Going Strong
Company, an old and established trading house in Singapore. The SCC was in part included in the League to help grow its size and enable more games for other participants. The winners of the Cosmoleague’s inaugural match were none other than the SCC’s talented players for the SCC 1st XI, which marked an auspicious start and a feat which the SCC repeated eight more times: in 1983, after the first title win, the SCC team was withdrawn from the League as it was regarded as too strong a side at the time, and it was felt that a ‘selection’ of second and third team players should be given the opportunity to represent the SCC moving forward. In 2004/05, Graham managed and James Whiteley captained the team, leading it to being League Runners-Up and winning the coveted Cosmopolitan Cup Final beating Brewerkz 2-1. Michael Drake and Graham managed the team for the 2005/06 season and led the side to League Runners-Up and another Cosmopolitan Cup Final success with 2-0 over Pulau Ubin. The season 2007/08 saw the SCC once more finish as runnersup in the League, but it did proudly win the Cosmopolitan Cup Final 4-0 v Hotspurs on the Padang.

ome 39 years ago in 1975 – that’s a full decade before the first MRT station in Singapore was completed – two Members of the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) Soccer Section started the legendary Cosmopolitan Football League, or Cosmoleague, as the founding fathers, which is a competitive Soccer League with its own sparkle. At its onset, from the SCCs’ perspective the Cosmopolitan League filled an off-season ‘gap’ that was left by the departed British Forces who had provided regular Saturday afternoon soccer for many of the SCC’s section players throughout the 1950’s, 60’s and early 70’s. In fact, many of the League’s games were played at some of the old playing fields that the Forces had previously used. The League’s initial teams comprising the very first “league” in 1975 included the Club’s 1st XI, the Scandinavian Society ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams, a German XI, UWC/ISI, an SCC 2nd XI, a Swiss Club side, and a Dutch Club side, sponsored by The East Asiatic

The SCC has recently had a trailblazing series of seasons, winning the Cosmopolitan League and Cup Double in seasons 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/13 and 2013/14 winning the Cosmopolitan Cup for the past six years in succession. This reflects superb efforts by Coach Owen “Benitez” Monaghan’s and assistants Hutcho, Rogers, Bowden and Alonso. There are many names past and present to mention that bought quality and professionalism to SCC and help achieve this success, a sincere congratulations and happy endeavours for the future. As part of its continued support of the expatriate community in Singapore, the SCC is proud of being both a founding member of the Cosmoleague and for having participated in it since its conception in 1975. The SCC remains committed to the continued development of the Cosmopolitan League and to expatriate football in Singapore. And if past performance is anything to go by, the SCC and the Cosmoleague will still be going strong for at least another 39 years.

Junior Update - PBA 12th Penang (Malaysian) Junior Open 2014 This International Junior Tournament ran from 4 – 12 June and was held at the Nicol David International Squash Centre. This is an annual tour, and this year, our junior coach Allan Chang took 13 juniors to Penang. The purpose is to give them a feel of an international competition, prepare them for local tournaments and also to strengthen the bond amongst them. The tournament attracted entries from 13 countries around the Asian region as well as Jordan, Iran, South Africa, Australia & New Zealand. This is a ranking junior tournament and is very competitive. The tournament was played in age groups with the players playing for position rather than it being a more traditional knockout format. Celebrate Good Times!
We are the Champions!
Martha Young Cup winner, Chan Cup runners up and overall (joint) club champions! In June, the tennis teams took part in the annual Inter-Club Knockout Tournament organised by the Singapore Tennis Association at Kallang Tennis Centre. As usual, this was a tense affair as only the fittest teams survive. But after three weeks of battle in the heat, sun and floodlights, we’re proud to say that the collective effort of our three teams (Ladies’ A, Men’s C & Men’s A) propelled the club to be the joint winners of the overall club champion title. The selection for the overall club champion title is based on the collective scores and performance of each club. The Ladies’ A team fought their way to the finals and lifted the Martha Young title, the Men’s C team came in runners-up after an equally epic journey to the finals and the Men’s A were quarterfinalists in the toughest men’s category. The Men’s C met with SANWA group in the first round and displayed great perseverance and skills to beat SANWA. They then went on to beat Weekend Warriors and Deloitte & Touche in two nailbiting encounters, but lost in a closely fought match against the Filipino Tennis Club in the finals. The Ladies’ A started their journey with a challenging first round encounter against a strong SICC team but they battled it out to win a
well-deserved victory. They then beat the Filipino Tennis Club to face SANWA group in the finals. The heat was intense, and so was the battle on court. Eventually SCC beat SANWA to capture the Martha Young Cup title that eluded them for two years! On 25 July, the Tennis Section came together to celebrate this achievement. The last time SCC won the overall club champion title was around 2009. Mr Choo Cheok Hai, one of the veterans of the Tennis Section still Runners-up Winners & Chan Cup Martha Young Cup vividly recalls the year 1984 when SCC also won the overall club champion title, after taking a calculated gamble in their lineup. It seems that that was also the first year when the ladies team formerly entered the interclub knockout doubles tournament Some of the other jolly Men’s C guys with Lukas the coach and won! Thank you to all who supported, played and made themselves available for the interclub matches!
And then, there was...colour! Effective immediately players are no longer required to wear ALL white tennis clothing while playing on the tennis courts. Players may wear any coloured appropriate tennis attire which comprises recognised tennis clothing sold for the purpose of playing tennis. Clothing such as sweat shirts, dress shirts, tee shirts, football shirts, bermuda shorts, jogging shorts, football shorts, board shorts and casual shorts are not considered appropriate tennis attire.
