The 68th edition of the Societe Generale Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s (SCC 7s) will feature world-class teams from around the globe and will take place from 30th October to 1st November (Friday to Sunday) at the Padang. The SCC 7s has become part of the fabric of Singapore rugby, and many renowned stars of the game of world rugby have graced the Padang during the 7s. Joining defending champions – the Borneo Eagles – will be the development squads of international rugby powerhouses South Africa, England, France and Italy. These teams will be using the SCC 7s as a training platform ahead of the upcoming international Sevens World Series, which will include Singapore as a venue in 2016. South Africa, who previously participated as the South African Vipers, are making a return after a three-year absence and will be determined to add to their three Ablitt Cup titles. “As the new Chairman of the SCC 7s organising committee, I am eager to ensure that this event continues its reputation as one of the best tournaments in Asia, and more importantly, as a really great experience for everyone. The line-up on and off the field this year will certainly entice, and we hope to see everyone there come October.” – Jonathan Leow, Chairman of the SCC 7s Organising Committee
The SCC 7s is proudly sponsored by Societe Generale, one of the largest European financial services groups. Synonymous with rugby over the past few decades, Societe Generale has helped to grow the game in France and globally. The bank has supported rugby sevens since 2001. “We’re very pleased to be title sponsors for the second year in a row partnering the Singapore Cricket Club as they celebrate the 68th edition of the tournament,” said Pascal Lambert, Societe Generale Group County Head and Head of Corporate & Investment Banking, Southeast Asia. “It is especially exciting this year with the Rugby World Cup 2015 being played in England and Wales where Societe Generale is the sole worldwide banking, financial and insurance partner of the tournament. We have worked alongside the rugby world, with which we have shared the values of commitment and team spirit for 28 years. Last year’s tournament was a huge success, having witnessed some world-class rugby action right in the heart of Singapore. We are proud to be associated with it once again and will continue to contribute to the success of this event in order to help rugby grow in Singapore.”

Gold for Gilchrist
S
CC Member, Peter Gilchrist graciously presented his 28th SEA Games Gold Medal to the Club at the Billiards and Snooker Annual General Meeting held at the Gilmour Room on 24 July 2015. Peter savoured his latest medal victory at the Games held in Singapore where he won the Men’s English Billiards Singles. The Club sincerely thanks Peter for his selfless contribution and wishes him every success in the upcoming World Billiards Championship in October 2015.
Triple Victory for Muir
S
CC Member Allan Muir has achieved an incredible feat after 40 years of playing golf. The avid Scottish golfer ‘shot’ three holes-in-one separately at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club and the Keppel Club respectively within a span of a few short weeks between 4 June and 18 July this year. An astonished Muir could hardly believe his good fortune on the green but he was unable to see the ball going in 178 metres away when he struck his first ace on the par-three 11th at Laguna’s World Classic Course – in fact he was only alerted to his win by the rousing cheers from his ‘flight-mates’. The 50-year-old golf enthusiast had previously come close to achieving a hole in one at a charity event at Sentosa Golf Club in 2009 but had missed the mark by an inch. The Club congratulates Allan on his spectacular scoring and we hope to hear of further golfing exploits from Allan in the near future.
The Intermediate Club Champion
Here’s how Muir attained this remarkable feat of three holesin-one: 4 June 2015 • Golf Course - Laguna’s World Classic • Hole No. - Par-Three - 11th Hole, 178m • Club Selection - Rescue-Club • Type of Ball - Titleist Pro V1x No.1 5 June 2015 • Golf Course - Keppel Club • Hole No. - Par-Three - 12th Hole, 163m • Club Selection - Five-Iron • Type of Ball - Titleist Pro V1x No.1 18 July 2015 • Golf Course - Laguna’s World Classic • Hole No. - Par-Three - 17th Hole, 120m • Club Selection - Nine-Iron • Type of Ball - Titleist Pro V1x No. 4 September / October 2015

T
he nation recently celebrated its 50th year of independence at the historic Padang where the first parade was held in 1966. In commemoration of our Golden Jubilee, the Club featured ‘lighting balloons’ perched on the terrace of Stumps Terrace, Gilmour Terrace and Victoria Terrace - its spherical form aglow with the specially designed SCC SG50 logo. LED lights projecting various National Day images against the facade of the Clubhouse further added to the festive ambience while the interior was equally decked in red and white buntings and streamers. The Club was abuzz with anticipation of this milestone parade on 9 August and Members were thrilled by the spectacular aerial displays by the Republic of Singapore Air Force Black Knights – an undeniable crowd pleaser that never fails to draw gasps of awe and excitement. Members also savoured SG50 themed food and beverage with an array of local food and unique drinks available at The Courtyard. Entertainment was aplenty with activities such as balloon sculpting, face painting and a photo booth. In addition, specially prepared goodie favors and SG50 themed cookies were given to all present. Members were keenly fixated on the ‘Live’ screening of the National Day Parade on the screens around the Club which culminated in a gloriously breathtaking display of fireworks in the heart of the civic district.

SCC RUNNERS Article: Paviter Singh
T
he SCC Runners was formed in 2014 with the aim of inculcating a spirit of running within the Club, while keeping the idea quite social. With a tagline, “Jog and Jug”, we ensured that the social aspect was kept in order. Every Thursday, a small group of us would go for a casual
jog and probably grab a drink and some food back at the Club. Over the past year, we have had some amazing accomplishments by our fellow runners. The SCC Runners recently took part in the Asics Night Relay Run. It was our first race as a team and we were extremely psyched about it. We had a team of four runners who had to run 10.5km each. Donning our SCC Runners jersey, we met at the Singapore Sports Hub to tear up the track, SCC style. True to our form, we finished third in our category and 25th overall out of 1000 teams. “It’s great to see the seed of a wonderful idea grow into a full interest group. The jog and jug is a wonderful place for Members from different sections to get together. Kudos also to our first SCC Runners team to come in third in their first competitive run.” - Baljit Singh, SCC Runner Do join the SCC Runners every Thursday evening for a “Jog and Jug” at 6.45pm. The rules are simple: turn up, run at your own pace and stay for a drink if you like. Follow our Facebook group at: www.facebook.com/groups/ sccrunclub/
OBITUARIES The Club records, with deep regret, the passing of our Members. Our sincere condolences to the family of the departed.

KAMPONG NIGHT 24 July 2015
S
CC Members were treated to a captivating series of traditional Malay cultural dances at the Main Lounge. The lively performances comprising of the ‘Warisan Seni’, ‘Zapin Kampong Melayu’ and the famous ‘Joget Lambak’ were part of the Hari Raya festivities at the Club. Titled ‘The Kampong Heritage’, our Members enjoyed the ethnic performances and they also had an opportunity to experience, if only for a while, life in a kampong. The performers also gamely demonstrated their skill in wearing the quintessential Malay attire – the beloved sarong. The evening ended on a high note with a sumptuous kampong feast for all.

I
n the big local League Into the second round of the InterClub League at the Eurasian Association in June, SCC did well, with our Team 4 amassing the highest number of points during the evening. Kudos to Kiran Kaur, Yeoh Foo Yong, Anwar Gaffoor and Soma Devi who scored a total of 2382 points. Convenor John Taylor scored the season’s highest single column to date with a formidable 162 points. Unfortunately we got a little slack in Round 3 at the Tanglin Club in July with the highest scoring SCC Team 2 taking second place overall. The winner being SRC Team 1. After three rounds, our Teams 2 and 4 were running sixth and seventh place respectively on the leaderboard, but not to worry, there are three more rounds to go and the gap between us and the top five is extremely thin, so there’s hope yet – high hopes. Team SCC – May the Force be with us! Invitational Triangular The customary Triangular Tournament with Indian Association, the NUSS and SCC was hosted by NUSS this year at its Kent Ridge Guild House. 12 players from each club participated. While camaraderie is the name of the game (oops, sorry, Balut is the name of the game), it is taken to a whole different level at the Triangular as the smaller number of teams lend itself to an atmosphere that is more intimate and convivial. SCC has the honour of hosting this series next year.
O
ur deepest condolences to Rod and family While in the company of close friends at the Club in July, fellow baluteer Rod Murchison received the most devastating news any parent could ever hear: his eldest son Bryant, 38, passed on following an accident at home in Perth. Rod and his family spent many years in Singapore and several Club Members knew young Bryant during his growing years. This tragic event is deeply felt by many of us. Words are of little comfort and we only hope time will help to ease the pain. Our deepest condolences to Rod, Clara and family. May you find the courage and strength to move forward in peace and confidence knowing that Bryant had a life well lived.
Finally, we would like to wish Sunita Kapoor a speedy recovery from her hospital stay following an operation on her left arm. Sunita has stated that anyone visiting should just bring champagne, smoked salmon and caviar.
SCC has 13 players going to the Sarawak Invitational 1-14 September with two supporters, one being SCC Club President Capt. Baldev Singh. JULY IN-HOUSE BALUT RESULTS 1. JF Moore II with 676 points 2. A. N. Balagopal with 656 points 3. Philippe Prevost with 655 points

e had our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 24 July 2015. As I am stepping down as Convenor, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who helped me during my term as Section Convenor. I would not have achieved what I intended without the help of Manu Bhojwani (Ex-President), Baljit Singh Johal (Ex-Deputy President), T.Ravi Chandran (ExGames Control Board Chairman) and my Committee Members who without any reservation organised competitions and social events for the Section Members and not forgetting SCC staff especially Ken Ang, Becky Xu and Club General Manager, Nigel Stearns. My sincere thanks and I look forward to your continual support of the new team of the Billiards & Snooker Section.
Upcoming Events
As I take up the position of Assistant Honorary Secretary of Cuesports Singapore, I am fully committed to support the Billiards and Snooker Section’s activities.

Young Bloods Rise to the Challenge
The SCC team before the first match
T
he Tanglin Club hosted an international Mixed Triples tournament in conjunction with their 150th anniversary from 23 to 26 July 2015 attracting a total of 40 teams from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Australia and Japan. SCC was represented by three teams:
• • •
SCC 1: Lim T Q, Mary Lim, Rosemary Tessensohn, Christian Huang, Edmund Lin and Loh Hui Shan SCC 2: Shermeen Lim, Chng Ming Li, Melvin Tan and Wong Hui Kai SCC 3: Chai H Y, Yong Lew Foong, Chew K C and Jennifer Chew
All teams were split into four groups, where it was a fight to be in the top two in order to advance to the quarter-finals. SCC 1 had a shaky start and caught up to finish in fifth place in their group. SCC 3 tied for second place in their group in points but unfortunately fell short in shots difference.
In the finals, SCC faced the same HKPBC team from the round-robin stage. The match was an absolute nail-biter. After conceding six shots in two ends to HKPBC, SCC led narrowly 9-7 after the ninth end. The turning point came in the tenth end when HKPBC held two shots in the head and SCC skip Shermeen had her last bowl in hand. Critically, she held her nerves and played a brilliant weighted shot to steal the jack which was just two inches away from the opponent’s bowl and brought it to SCC’s bowls waiting at the back to extend the score to 12-7. HKPBC attempted to fight back but with SCC’s strong defence aided by the time limit set for each match, it proved to be in vain. The final score was 12-10 and SCC team emerged champions!
SCC 2 won all the games in the round-robin except against Fremantle Bowling Club and Hong Kong Police Bowling Club (HKPBC). Fortunately, they had a significant shots advantage to top their group and advanced into the quarter-finals as the only Singapore team left. For the quarter-finals, SCC faced our friends from the Royal Bangkok Sports Club and advanced with a score of 16-8. The semi-finals against the Hong Kong Football Club proved to be a tough match as the opponents had yet to drop a game. It was a very close fight in the beginning but fate turned in favour of SCC with a commendable score of 15-7.
Presenting to you, the champions!

ational bridge and premier bridge league games are over and it has been a great learning experience for the Section Members. The session for Hari Raya held on 20 July with some delectable finger food saw a healthy turnout. Plans are on the way to combine the Annual General Meeting (AGM) along with the National Day session at the point of writing. Members can look forward to a sumptuous buffet spread. This will be held on 20 August at the Gilmour Room. Dinner and drinks will be served from 6.15 pm onwards. Bridge will follow immediately after the AGM. A special prize will be given to the best pair of the night. Find out more in the next issue of The Padang. The Committee is also mindful of the fact that more Section Members are needed to grow the pool of available players. It plans to organise four training sessions in November to initiate new Members and to get them started on the game. An enrichment session is also in the works for those interested in finding out more about the nuances of the game to further enhance their play. Look out for specific details on these plans in the coming months! A Whist Drive (Whist is another card game) is being planned. This will involve Members from other Sections and it should be a fun-filled affair.

SCC team for the John Ewing trophy match
R
SC INTERPORT (4 - 5 JuLY 2015) A tale of two days; two matches; two trophies and fine hosting.
John Ewing Trophy (SCC won by 8 runs) In a tight and absorbing match, SCC batting first racked up 170 runs for the loss of 6 wickets with Ash Raivadera heroically making 63 his second half century in as many days and ably supported by Brigu Iyer 30 and Rohan Kapoor not out 30. The stalwarts of RSC (who turned out a side with at least half a dozen former national players) in their Hugh Darwell receving the John Ewing trophy chase put up an admirable from RSC Sports Chairman response from the evergreen opening pair of Haren (28) and Edwin Seah (36) with Kim Heng (24) and Devindran (28) keeping up the pressure on SCCs’ total. However, RSC was eventually frustrated by a tight spin (from Rohan Kapoor) culminating in a hat trick by Convenor David Jones to wrap up the innings in memorable style.
Syer Salver - RSC won by (quite) a lot The less said about this match the better. However, the commitment of some of the chaps to SCC’s cause was in full display with several players making a great effort to travel from Singapore just for the Sunday game. Arjun Kakar and Paul Immanuel flew up to KL on Saturday evening after playing a league match for SCC Tigers that afternoon and Ben Gliddon flew in on Sunday morning itself. Choosing to field first, a wayward bowling performance let RSC amass 307 runs in 40 overs with spinners Shivam Ahuja and Paul Immanuel accumulating any kudos. SCC’s batting was brittle with only James Muruthi (35) and Joe Windscheffel (25) making a significant contribution (the only two to get into double figures) in feeble response of 95 in 26 overs. The result of SCC’s rapid demise was an early opening of the beer taps to accompany some RSC and Saturday XI stalwarts who had been in ‘session’ all afternoon with Johnny Walker. Overall it was a good tour played in the right spirit and the camaraderie shared by these two clubs via this long standing Interport fixture was in no shortage and augurs well for future generations. Thank you to our tour manager Vijay Jeyaratnam for making all the arrangements and many thanks also to our wonderful scorers Sarah Seabright (Saturday) and Tracy Jones (Sunday) for their efforts, time and full participation in all things tour-related.

O
ur Annual Ladies’ Darts Night was held on 4 June - a night which will be remembered by most ladies at SCC! We had an overwhelming response this year with a total of 10 teams participating in the event: Tennis, Cricket, Squash Sections fielded two teams each, Netball, Bridge, Balut fielded a team each and there was also a team from SCC staff. We had a great turnout of about 50 people throwing darts. The Oval Restaurant was filled with laughter and much camaraderie. Chalking and scoring, our male players greatly supported the Ladies’ Darts Night. We had Raymond Ambrose, John Spackman, Philip Ng, Mohan Balagopal and a special guest in town from Down Under - Mr Robert Bulluss. Thank you for your masculine support, we appreciate it. The event was filled with laughter and many competitive moments. Teams from all Sections put up a good fight to remain competitive. Lynn Wilson who represented the Netball Section received the highest score of 132 for the night and walked away with a bottle of wine. Our ladies walked away with some door gifts from Nutri First Shaker Bottles, feminine products from Lactacyd, a $200 facial voucher from Epi Treatz, spa treats from Atos Wellness, Life Spa (a complimentary spa treat for the ladies).

The competitive golfers - SCC vs RSC
S
CC hosted the Royal Selangor Club (RSC) for the return Interport Golf event on 9 July 2015 at Jurong Country Club. 24 competitive golfers and eight social golfers from each Club participated in the event. Everything was marvellous - from lunch to the weather to golf to dinner and even singer, Nora, who provided entertainment during dinner backed-up by Marilyn Cheok of JCC Marketing MG. Fun and fellowship was enjoyed by all in high spirits! The result of the golf match between SCC and RSC was heavily in favour of our visiting guests but acting Golf Captain - Chionh Chye Hion’s comforting words were, “Don’t worry, just be happy”. Emcee Hugh Darwell ran the post-match event really well with the help of Thipa Mogan, Senior Sports Executive. We wish to thank Thipa, Riena and Tameka for their great assistance in organising such an excellent event. We also thank Deputy President, Brian Teo for attending the dinner and Games Control Board Chairman, Richard Stapley-Oh for attending both the match and dinner and helping to make the evening a success. Thanks Chionh for standing in as skipper whilst Peter Salt was away - maybe a candidate for next year’s Captaincy? Our trip to Batam on 31 July and 1 August for two rounds of
social golf was organised by Hugh Darwell and it was as much fun as the previous two-day trip held there last December. Next events are, SCC Annual Golf Tournament to be held at Sentosa Golf Club (Serapong Course) on 9 September 2015. We expect up to 132 golfers to enjoy a day of enjoyable golf, prizes and sumptuous dinner (at The Padang Restaurant) with entertainment. Refer to The Padang magazine or the Club notice board for details or alternatively call Thipa Mogan. The annual Pot Games vs Tanglin Club will be held at the Warren Golf Club (WGC) on 29 September. We hope to have a team of 24 golfers plus a few social flights. Details will be sent out via email in due course or you may contact Thipa for further information. The match will be followed by a Tapas-style dinner at WGC. All participants for the golf event will be invited to the Pot Games Dinner hosted by SCC on 3 October at the Padang. Most importantly our SCC Golf Section Annual General Meeting will be held on 15 October, 6.30pm at Gilmour Room followed by dinner with the usual good SCC Golf Section spirit. We appreciate your time and support for the Committee.

Men's and Ladies’ 2nd XI Make Huge Progress
T
he Men’s and Ladies’ 2 XI have arrived at the latter stages of the NHL 2 and NWL 2 respectively. The season started for both these squads in March and will end at Sengkang Hockey Stadium. nd
2nd XI Men: Galaxies apart from last season Considering the brave venture of our 2nd XI in NHL 1 and the 3rd XI in NHL 2 last season, this season bears testament that we are galaxies apart. Setting a target to garner a medal as our primary target and the title as our secondary target, our 2015 2nd XI Men (the result of merging the 2nd and 3rd from last season) were men possessed. Led by the effervescent Patrick Meredith (Paddy sounds Irish but he’s English) the seconds strut their stuff and claimed nine wins from a possible 12. Losing twice to Jansenites who look set to become the title winners and unfortunately falling to Tornados on what must have been a mother of all off days, the Seconds did not put one foot wrong. Besides their professional display on the pitch the camaraderie on our WhatsApp chat group and post-match refreshments at the aptly named “Legends” at Sengkang has made this a truly great team. The 27 points haul this season has guaranteed the 2nd XI Men the silver medal and amazingly if results go our way it might even be enough for a gold medal (however that is a very long shot). This second place finish is the highest achieved by a 1st or 2nd XI Men’s squad in the last nine years. If the Seconds are given another chance next season to play in this same league, there is a great possibility that they will go one better. 2nd XI Ladies: Leaps and bounds from previous few seasons Another merger of sorts was the 2nd XI and 3rd XI Ladies’. The move was made to ensure that the quality of the team and combined effort of a core committed group will render positive results. The outcome of this move was our 2nd XI Ladies’ team playing some great hockey in most games but as the season progressed to the summer break and exams their assault on the title was dented. Leading the table for the first month and then sitting in second spot until last weekend - currently lying in fourth on equal points with third placed Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) and a mere four points adrift of league leader Vijayanti. With Jansenites who are two points ahead of us in second spot and playing SRC twice it is unlikely that our valiant 2nd XI will claim a medal which is heart wrenching but sports is not just about enjoying the joys of victory it’s also about dealing with the agony of defeat. But I like to think that this was a successful venture and with the determined leadership of Lemoushmi Devi Chandra the team was more focused and fought hard in every game claiming a famous win over SRC and had a win over Vijayanti stolen from them in the dying seconds. The latter may be the difference between a medal but the team is in a good place now and the only way is up and perhaps a medal is not too far away.

Notwithstanding, their likely fourth place finish is the highest the 2nd XI have achieved in a long while. Kudos ladies we are all very proud of you! 1st XI Men: Geared up to climb from their bronze medal finish last season The 1st XI Men have gone into full swing trainings and look set to maintain their top three status this season. Starting their campaign in early August, the Ones have prepared for the season by playing in the Premier Liga with multiple practice matches including some visiting teams from UK and Padang rivals SRC. They have 10 tough matches in the NHL 1 and it would be great if SCC’s presence at Sengkang Hockey Stadium can be seen and heard. We look forward to such support. 1st XI Ladies: Roaring to reclaim the NWL 1 title The 1st XI Ladies’ have gone through an overhaul of sorts. New players have been recruited and an energetic youth development programme has seen an influx of four U19 girls included in the playing roster. The trustworthy experienced seniors are still there fitter than ever I might add and are eager to do battle with defending champions SRC and runners-up Jansenites. These clubs boast a large number of national players who had recently won the SEA Games Bronze medal. The 1st XI Ladies’ are also wary of the threat posed by the Tornados, Crescent, Theresians and Nanyang Polytechnic. However after defending their Premier Liga crown with a perfect 10 out of 10 wins they should fear no one and go into their campaign confident of a title assault. We wish them the best and like the 1st XI Men, SCC’s support is needed and would make a big difference especially in the tight games. 3rd XI Men: Solid as a rock thus far The season has started for the 3rd XI Men (formerly 4th XI) in NHL 4 and they have secured a win and a draw. The huge statistic is that they have not conceded a goal to date. Their defending has been heroic thus far and if they can continue in this vein a medal finish is surely on the cards. The league is littered with talented squads and the Thirds who with their many experienced players have been grinding out rock solid performances in the blue turf at MOE Evans. If you are in the area of Evans Road drop by to give them your support. 4th XI Men: Experience and youth blended for success The 4th XI has always been where any of our Section Members who wish to play hockey can find a spot. But given the busy pace of life in Singapore, the numbers were falling short and it was harder to fill squads let alone strong squads. Last season together with Sean Chen we devised a plan to reinvigorate the 4th XI (formerly 5th XI). We brought together all our young boys either from the academy or the other teams to form a core group. Likewise we got some experienced players who wanted to continue playing or those that could not commit too much together and formed another core group. The amalgamation of these two groups is the result of the current 4th XI squad. Last season we finished fourth and currently after three rounds of games we are joint top with 100 percent records. The project is bearing fruit and in a couple of seasons this 4th XI squad would have well and truly bedded in. A title push this season is on the cards, if so, it would have been the first in few years too.

he recent AGM saw a number of Committee Members stepping down from their posts and we would like to take this opportunity to recognise the out-going Committee which I am sure you will agree did a fantastic job.
So, to the new Committee, we have our new Convenor Sadaf Salim. Alice Harkness has stepped into the Captaincy with our secretary Penny Hands keeping us organised. Lee-Anne Keats has taken on the role of Treasurer and Nanthini Visvalingam will continue on as JSM Liaison. Jacq Ann Phua has the key role on fixtures and tours and appropriately enough we have two social secretaries, Madeline Marriage and Fiona Chesney so we are expecting to be extra social this year. On this note, we started the year with Captain’s Cocktails at the new Victoria Room. Finance Member Mr Parasuram Krishnan and GC Member Ms Joyce Foster joined us for the evening as we kicked off the year with a Section update and some cocktails. We’re now half-way through the most competitive league of the year and have entered two teams: Hawks in Division 3 and the Eagles in Division 7.
SCC Eagles
Moving on to administration - We’ve got a team brunch at the Club on 6 September so mark the date in your diaries. We’ll also be looking for a team to represent us in the Intersection Quiz on 16 October. Finally, the plan is to enter a team in both Pesta Sukan Carnivals (mixed on 5 September and Ladies’ Open on 12 September) as well as the Bali tournament in October 2015.
The Hawks had a cracking start with three straight wins. Unfortunately we then came up against two teams comprising of ex-national players and whilst we matched them for parts of the game their consistency lead to narrow victories. We ended July on a high beating NZCC in a well fought match; a great result for the team and our first victory against them this year. Great efforts by all and a perfect way to bid a fond farewell to our shooter Andrea Tolley; she will be missed on and off the court. The Eagles have shown some great play this season in a competitive division. They have achieved some good wins despite at times having to contend with injuries and different line ups from the squad. Special mention goes to Kyesha who has improved significantly throughout the season and Alcina who has been showing a lot of ‘spark’ in mid court. SCC Hawks

S
ociete Generale SCC Rugby Section Storms the Pre-Season In what we hope is the shape of things to come, the Rugby Section’s winning ways have continued. First up, it was the turn of Captain Sam Flint’s Nomads to take to the field in our first ever tour to Vietnam playing the Saigon Geckos in HCMC on 19 June. A good touring party mix of JSMs and old club hands headed up there. It was a greatly typical Nomad’s performance. Pre-match preparation with a Scandinavian theme finished in the early hours of Saturday morning and having got to the pitch, the Nomads took awhile to get into the game, almost losing it. But as the scrums began to lose that Jager aroma, some epic performances were seen, not least by Bryan ‘The Body’ Lim, Tim ‘Shady’ Han, Charlie Osler, Ben Turner, Pat Duffy and the epic bean himself turned the tide. Putting discipline issues behind them the SCC got on top of the game and the referee, winning the match and giving the referee (who had travelled from Cambodia) a well-deserved thank you in the post-match. Next up, the Societe Generale SCC Colts (SCC Colts) - the new addition to the Section (See following page). Coaches Bryan Lim and Suhaimi Amran’s brand new Under 23 side that only had two weeks of training together, entered the SRU’s inaugural Youth Club 7s tournament and won it! Some awesome play

by the likes of Yan Sapiee, Laurence Gardener, Ewan Ferguson and the hard as nails duo of Cameron Wood and Nick Bromley denied Wanderers the title. Finally, the National Club 7s, the start of the 7s season kicked off with two rounds on 11 July and 25 July respectively. As usual the SCC fielded two sides Societe Generale SCC Gold (SCC Gold) and Societe Generale SCC Black (SCC Black) but unusually we had many new JSM faces making the cut to put on the black and gold. We won again with SCC Gold taking victory in both tournaments inching out St Andrews and securing victory in the overall competition. The final was a heart stoppingly close-run affair. Excellent in defence, the Saints shut down all of SCC Gold’s initial attacks. However brilliant coordination between Captain Valu Raturibi and National Team star Bryan Ng together with a Charlie Osler interception got SCC back in the saddle. But the Saints came back levelling the scores until in extra time, a beautiful run down the wing by Bryan Ng clinched the title for the SCC. A big thank you to all the boys who stepped up to play especially the young fellas and 7s utility props Shane Dewar and Giles Holtby. Last but very much not least a huge thank you to Head Coach Matt Singer, SCC Colts Coach Su and Manager (and lynch pin) Mike Cosnett for a huge effort and a great start to the season.

Introducing The
Societe Generale O
n 28 June 2015 the SCC won the SRU Youth Club 7s. We did it with a brand new team coached and recruited by Bryan Lim and Suhaimi Amran and after only two weeks of training. These boys are the Societe Generale SCC Colts (SCC Colts) - the new Under 23 side who you will be hearing a lot about in the coming months and years and who will be participating in the new Under 23 league this year. Youth development in rugby is something that we in the Section, together with the Singapore Rugby Union, have been working on for some time. The SCC Academy was started in January 2012 by Section Members Ian Douglas and Andy Douglas (no known relation), Robbie “The Shoe” Wilkins and Simon Etheridge and is growing from strength to strength with over 300 kids between the ages of 3 to 16 training and competing in competitions all over Asia.
The Societe Generale SCC Colts in action
Societe Generale SCC Colts SRU Youth Club 7s Winners
The Rugby Section has always faced two problems in youth development. The first has been attracting good players from the schools into the Club which is made more difficult by the emergence of strong school based men’s rugby clubs, such as Saint Andrews and Oldham (ACS) – curtailing recruitment from these traditional rugby schools. The second has been transitioning players from the Academy into the SCC men’s teams which can be a daunting prospect for a 17 or 18 year old. With the SCC Colts now established we hope we have at least partially overcome these two challenges. We have a good team coached by National team players (Suhaimi and Bryan) with a proven track record of winning. We hope this will attract the best players from schools across Singapore and make them want to return after university or National Service. We also now have a team which Academy players can aspire to join. But perhaps the most important asset which the SCC Colts give us is the fact that you can now put on a black and gold jersey at three years of age and play for the Club into your 50s and 60s (I won’t mention which Societe Generale SCC Growlers I’m referring to here). And that is something very rare and special.
Coaches Suhaimi Amran and Bryan Lim
So I would like to say a big thank you on behalf of the Section to Suhaimi and Bryan for doing such a fantastic job in putting together this side and winning their first ever competition. To the SCC Colts players, welcome to the best sports club in Asia and welcome to the Rugby Section.
Whilst recruiting young players in Singapore is a challenge for most sports, keeping them is even harder. National Service, university and the pressures of starting a new job mean that we sadly lose many promising young players shortly after they leave school. As a sports club, developing and keeping young players in the SCC is essential for the Club to retain its sporting talent and its identity. At the national level it is even more critical to keep young people playing and enjoying their sport to maintain the talent pool necessary for Singapore to succeed internationally (many of you will have noticed that a significant number of the SEA Games Bronze medal winning Rugby 7s team are or were SCC Junior Sports Members). T
he idea of having an assembly of SCC Soccer Section Members of the 70s in Singapore from 28 - 31 May 2015 was conceived when Michael Grice, former SCC President, fatally collapsed in the Clubhouse in August last year and sadly passed away in hospital a few hours later.
There were other prominent Members in the Soccer Section who had also passed away including Brian Ward who was the most outstanding Soccer Section Captain for many years. When I joined the Club and the Soccer Section beginning 1971, I was told by Brian Ward to start playing in the 2nd XI. I was quite surprised. But after one season followed by the off-season, I was playing for the 1st XI. Brian Ward was also a founding member and Captain of the Padantiques which was formed in 1977. The demise of these two prominent active Members of the Club, and in particular the Soccer Section, prompted me to assemble, within a few months, as many previous Members of the Soccer Section of the 70s - the time when they were at their peak of playing soccer for SCC. We managed to round up 27 Members of the 70s who all played for the 1st XI. They came from all over the world like Australia, USA, England, Germany, Spain, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. 12 others were in touch with us but apologised for being unable to make the trip. The first get together of these great Members after 40 years or so at Stumps was simply incredible. After a few “re-introductions” everyone seemed to recognise each other and began talking about the good old days while at the same time wondering how much actually changed in Singapore. The soccer match was held on Friday, 29 May 2015 against the current Padantiques of the Soccer Section at Dempsey Field. It was tremendous. The result was immaterial. What mattered was the good spirit in which this game was played. Our goal keeper

Keith Sanders was kept busy all the time and Mark Rice, Freddy Froboese, Dirk Paulsen, Barry Smith (son of 78 year old Terry), Kim Bergenser and Jeremy Foxon put up some resistance and occasional attacks. A couple of beers after the game helped replenish lost fluids and after a shower and change at the Club about 20 Members of the current Padantiques plus 30 or so of our lot congregated on the terrace of the Gilmour Room for a Memorial to pay respect to Michael Grice, Brian Ward, Ray Collins, Dick Lacey, Ray Lee and George Suppiah. Dinner was served at the Gilmour Room right after followed by contributions and many speeches. John Duffy and Peter “Shooter” Schott of the current Padantiques compered the evening with good renditions and tell tales and speeches were ably presented by Mark Rice and Tom Robertson. It was a wonderful evening which ended for some at Stumps after a few more drinks until the early hours. On Saturday, 30 May 2015 everyone who came from far and near met at Dirk Paulsen’s house for ‘Makan Kechil’ and plenty of drinks. Mario Mari-Juan obliged to singing “Granada” - he used to sing in the Club when he was here followed by Ismail Tahir’s “Delilah”. A splendid evening was had by all. A very successful and most enjoyable get together. Everybody agreed that this must be repeated every five years. So be it!

Thanks to the outgoing Treasurer, Bill Hatch, Secretary, Anna Trybocka and Member Peter Rogers. HKFC 3s Team Tournament 29 - 31 May 2015 This year we sent four Men’s teams, one Ladies’ and a Veterans team. The tournament was extremely strong this year with the Thailand National team Outgoing Treasurer Bill Hatch receiving and the unofficial China team from his pewter mug from the Section Shanghai competing, as well as teams from Hong Kong full of ex-national players. The team of juniors -Ian Liew, Isaiah Yeo and Rayden Tan had our best result as runners-up of the Plate event.
Phil Head (HKFC), Rayden Tan, Ian Liew, Isaiah Yeo & Annie Au (HK Open Champion 2015)
Report from Ian Liew: Overall it was a really good tournament and fun experience. We went into it expecting nothing so the prize was a bonus! In the first match we were up against the KCC team from HK who were the eventual finalists. We were still shaking off the rust from our lack of court time before the trip and ended up losing 3-0. However, the other group stage matches went our way and we were really fortunate to make the plate event. The last group stage game we played was against an extremely strong HKFC team but they were really tired from their previous game against KCC just a few hours earlier. If not for these circumstances, we might not have made it so far and we would say that that stroke of luck brought us a decent sixth placing which was unexpected.

ur usual scribe and famous Ladies’ Club Captain Nilma Missir is taking a well deserved break for this issue so I will direct the play and do my best to measure up to her high standards. By the time Members read this article we would have hosted our Annual General Meeting in August and also welcomed onboard the new Committee. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing Committee for all their hard work and support over the last 12 months: Mert Hifzi, Kevin Cumbers, Gilbert Ng, Soenke Langhoff, Nilma Missir, Wilfred Lim, Joe Chan, Adam Sturmer and Shadid Sen. It was not an easy year to manage and keep the momentum going given the loss of our sports facilities but thanks to these people working in the background our Section is thriving. In fact we are the largest Sports Section at SCC and have much to look forward to with our new court surface planned for later in the year. Communications We all understand the importance of communication and this is an area we have worked hard to improve over the past 12 months. We use a database to email our Section Members managed by SCC staff. If you are not receiving our weekly email please contact SCC directly to update your email details and ensure your details are added into the tennis section database. If you would like to contact us please email at tennissection@sccsections.org.sg Social Tennis All Members are invited to join us for social tennis at the Savitar Tennis Centre on the eight floor of the Fairmont Hotel every Friday evening from 5.30pm until 7.30pm. We are currently enjoying play on artificial clay courts five and six. Just turn up and introduce yourself if you are a new Member. Ladies’ Day is organised once a month on a Wednesday morning from 9am to 11am.
