PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
The Nation recently celebrated its first Olympic gold medal, with the stellar performance from Joseph Schooling (son of SCC Member, Reginald C. Schooling) in the 100m butterfly at the recent Games in Rio. On behalf of Singapore Cricket Club, I congratulate Joseph and Reginald on this win. We wish Joseph the very best in his sporting endeavours in the future. His outstanding tenacity and drive to excel in his sport is extraordinary and in this same spirit, I urge all of our sportsmen and sportswomen in SCC to continue to strive for your personal best in any sport you play. The Club recently welcomed Mr. Alan Jones who will serve as SCC’s General Manager for an interim period of a year till a permanent candidate is appointed. Alan had previously served the Club in the same capacity for a period of five years and members who were with us then would remember him. Within the pages of this issue is a feature on Alan and his thoughts since joining the SCC. I look forward to his capable leadership. Please join me in wishing him the very best in this role.

Gear up for an exhilarating weekend of high octane street racing action around the Civic District and Marina Bay Area. The iconic SCC Night Race will soon be held in a few weeks and I invite you to join us at the Club to witness the race as it unfolds right on our ‘front porch’. Indulge in the array of sumptuous food and beverages and take part in the various fringe activities held within the Club to commemorate this event. Hosted by the Tanglin Club, this event aims to foster continued camaraderie and friendship amongst the sportsmen and women at both clubs. Come support Team SCC and I wish all participants the best of luck! The 69th edition of the SCC International Rugby Sevens will be held at the Padang from 4 to 6 November. This annual sporting event will witness the participation of numerous world-class teams from around the region vying for the coveted Ablitt Cup. Fans and spectators alike can expect a great game from the athletes. We look forward to your support of one of the premier club tournaments at the SCC. The General Committee and I wish you the best always and hope you enjoy your visits to the Club.

‘If you wouldn’t do it at home or in the street in front of a policeman, then don’t do it in the Club,’ is my advice to all Members. Or as the Bye-Laws say, ‘Members and guests shall at all times use the Club and facilities provided in such manner so as not to interfere with the reasonable comfort of, or be a nuisance to, other members of the Club and so as not to damage or possibly damage the Club property’. Fortunately, we are a Club with few complaints. The majority of Members respect the Rules and Bye-Laws and conduct themselves in a proper manner. The Rules & Membership Subcommittee (RMSC) does not only handle complaints, though that seems to be what we are best known for. We also oversee:
1. Review of the Rules and Bye-Laws to ensure that they stay ‘current’ and Member experience remains excellent RMSC is presently reviewing the Bye-Laws with regards to taking of photographs of Members within the Club premises. Currently, the Bye-Laws preclude such photographs from being ‘published anywhere (including personal websites)’ which is at odds with modern practice of individuals and sections posting on social media or sending photographs via instant messenger services. Recently, we also proposed changes to strengthen the Bye-Law governing protection of staff. 2. Membership We work with the Chairman, Games Control Board (GCB) and the Section Convenors to continue to attract top sporting talent, particularly at JSM level. We strategize with the Marketing & Communications Subcommittee (MSC) and Membership Sales Team to promote the Club and attract new Members. We also approve membership applications, renewals and conversions. Did you know that there are 12 types of membership? They are Honorary Life Members; Life Members; Honorary Members; Ordinary Members; Term Members; Family Members; Sports Members; Junior Sports Members; Invited Members; Visiting Members; Ordinary (Transferable) Members; and Corporate Members (Transferable).
3. Club Security We are reviewing CCTV camera locations to protect the Club and Members whilst respecting privacy. Such cameras are always useful whenever complaints are received or security breaches happen. 4. Reciprocal Rights SCC Members enjoy reciprocal membership rights at a vast array of clubs worldwide. The list of reciprocal clubs is reviewed regularly and updated where necessary. Also, RMSC reviews SCC’s conditions for accepting reciprocal members. Recently the General Committee (GC) approved RMSC’s recommendation that reciprocal Members must provide proof of arrival in Singapore. It should be highlighted that RMSC is an advisory body to the GC. Rule changes have to be agreed by the Membership at a General Meeting. Bye-Law changes have to be posted for 14 days on a notice board to allow Members to comment. So, it’s important that the RMSC is made up of (volunteer) Members that will adopt a common sense approach with the view that anything we do must be in the best interests of the Club. It was excellent news when Intekhab Khan, Lim Khoon and Moiz Sithawalla accepted my invitation to join the Subcommittee. They are long standing Members of good character and are all lawyers so we are never short of advice. The final two Members are Sher Baljit Singh, Chairman GCB and Anwar Gaffoor, Chairman MSC. We are ably supported by the General Manager and the Membership Department.

‘JoE’ Zuzarte
OBITUARIES The Club records, with deep regret, the passing of our Members. Our sincere condolences to the family of the departed.
Aloysius Joseph Zuzarte, or “Joe” to his friends, was the SCC caterer from early to late 1970s. He was formerly the chef at the Prince’s Hotel Garni (now where the Grand Park Orchard is located). It is believed that the late SCC president, Andrew Gilmour brought in Joe to handle catering for the Club.

Joe ran the Gilmour Grill (which is now the Gilmour Room) and insisted on personally cooking every steak that was served at the restaurant. He spoke Hainanese which allowed him to control the kitchen and communicate clearly with the chefs and waiting staff at the Grill. Joe is credited with developing our menu and he introduced SCC’s signature dishes such as the Mulligatawny Soup and Fish Moolie, among several others, which is still served and enjoyed today. The Club then progressed to managing its own kitchens, which consequently concluded Joe’s services at the Club. Sadly, Joe passed away on 13 August 2016 and we acknowledge him for his contributions to the SCC F&B history. Rest in peace.

Interview with SCC General Manager
Alan Jones SCC welcomed Mr. Alan Jones as General Manager of the Club on 1 August 2016. Alan previously served the Club in the same capacity for a period of five years from 2007 to 2012. The editorial team of this magazine chatted with Alan recently on his return and thoughts of SCC.
Share with us a brief introduction of your professional background.
Share with us your hopes and plans for the Club in the near future.
Firstly let me say how delighted I am at the warm welcome I have received from Members as well as staff since my reintroduction into the SCC. For those who are unfamiliar, Exxon was where I spent most of my career having worked at the organisation for 33 years.
It is my hope that the SCC will continue to be a place of choice for Members and their guests. It should be a destination in itself, attracting a good mix of new Members both on a sports and social front. Achieving our financial targets over the next few years leading up to the lease renewal is a critical path which needs to be managed with diligence and care. Meanwhile it is our aim to keep the SCC running in all its vibrancy and strive to make it a great place for all Members.
Singapore has been my home for over 30 years during which time I was working for Esso Singapore Private Limited where I had plentiful opportunities to travel extensively around Asia working on business development opportunities in over 15 countries. I was also President of Esso Petroleum Korea Limited from 1993 to 2002, and now a Singapore Permanent Resident with dual citizenships in Great Britain and Australia. Having served the Club in the capacity of GM for 5 years previously, how does it feel to be back at SCC in the same role? I am most pleased to return to the SCC and meet up again with many of the Members and indeed many of the staff with whom I have worked with previously. The Club has evidently moved on with the times since I left. I am thrilled to help the SCC continue to prosper as a Premier Sports and Social Club in Asia. Share your thoughts and observations of SCC from the time you were GM till present. The heart of the SCC is still very much sports-driven but no doubt with a strong social aspect to it. The uniqueness of the Club has always been that it offers 13 Sports Sections – catering to the varied sporting interests of our Members. Also, it is great to see many Members participating in their Section at a premier level.
Describe some of your fondest memories of the SCC and perhaps even its staff. Interacting with the Members and having the pleasure of working with the staff across all levels has been a wonderful memory. For instance, members of staff, just to name a few, like Robin Fong (Bartender) who has been with us for 35 years, Ruslan Bin Jaapar (Housekeeping Supervisor) and Doris Ng (Changing Room Assistant) have been such an inspiration – their tireless hard work over many years combined with loyalty and commitment to serve the Club is admirable indeed. In fact I must say all staff has been instrumental in the growth and continued success of the SCC. How would you best describe the Club in a sentence? The SCC is a lively place; a wonderful environment always buzzing with great energy camaraderie and friendship. Roads around the 2016 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix circuit will close from Wednesday 14 September (two days before the race) till Tuesday 20 September (two days after the race).

1) As the Singapore Cricket Club is located within the circuit park, access to the Club will only be permitted for SCC Night Race Fiesta ticket holders from Friday 16 September to Sunday 18 September. 2) The Club may be accessed via Gate 4. Members may download the circuit map from the SGP website for details and reference. 3) Pedestrian access will be available on 14, 15 and 19 September via Gate 4 located near the Asian Civilisations Museum.
General Road Closure
1) St Andrews Road/Connaught Drive – No vehicular access into the Club from Wednesday 14 September 0001hrs to Tuesday 20 September 0530hrs. 2) Members who plan to drive are advised to exit the Clubhouse on Tuesday 13 September by 2330hrs before the road closure commences. 3) Collyer Quay/St Andrews Road/Stamford Road – Roads will reopen on Wednesday 14 September, Thursday 15 September and Friday 16 September from 0530hrs to 0930hrs.

INTRODUCTION TO YOGA

Newly joined member, Ms. Katherine Sarah Mountain hosted the first ‘Introduction to Yoga’ class for Members and guests at SCC on 13 July. The class was held at sunrise on a breezy morning at the Gilmour Terrace. Eager participants of this event explored basic connecting postures and breathing techniques while focusing on relaxation, stress release and stretching just before a long day ahead at work.

In the festive spirit of Hari Raya, SCC celebrated Kampong Night, Members and guests were treated to a Malay dance or ‘joget’ as it is commonly known. Dressed in brightly coloured and intricately embroidered ethnic costumes, the dancers showcased graceful moves to the beat of traditional Malay orchestra. Members also had an opportunity to engage in an interactive dance item and they even learned the art of draping a sarong. The event capped off with plentiful offerings of specialty hawker fare prepared by our chefs.

SCC CELEBRATES NATIONAL DAY

The Club commemorated Singapore’s 51st birthday with a fun ‘Family Day’ held at the Padang. Members and guests spent a relaxing afternoon soaking up the sunshine while the kids enjoyed a myriad of activities at the imaginary playground, foam pool and bouncy castle. Face painting and balloon sculpting was also available. Parents also had a chance to try their hand at croquet. Members also caught the ‘LIVE’ screening of the National Day Parade at the Main Lounge and capped off the evening with scrumptious hawker food fare featuring local delights.

Following the success of its debut, the Club organised its second SCC Fun Day on Sunday 31 July, this time with kind support from GetActive SG. In addition to the huge turnout of over 10,000 GetActive SG participants along the Civic District, we were honoured to welcome an unexpected visit from Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth who was there on location for a walkabout. There was an overwhelming participation from kids and parents at the Padang joining in bubble soccer and laser tag. The sports clinics for cricket, hockey, rugby, soccer and tennis were also very well attended. SCC also hosted a motivation talk on ‘The Road to Resilience: Turn Stress into Strength and Obstacles into Opportunities’ by SGT Ken (from USA). Everyone had a fun time and an exciting day at the Padang.

COMMUNITY CRICKET GAME At the last SCC Twenty20 Tournament held in 2014, an Indian-national construction worker, Mr Saravanan Sankar, who was working at the National Gallery Singapore, was the first spectator who to catch a ball hit for ‘6’ and won the ‘Diamond Catch’ prize while watching cricket at the Padang. Cricket has always been a favourite among the foreign workers on site around the Civic District. In line with SCC’s role in promoting cricket and reaching out to the wider community, as a gesture of thanks for their support as ardent fans of cricket, the Club, with efforts from the Cricket Section, organised a very special cricket match on Sunday 7 August against a team of workers from Shanghai Chong Kee Furniture and Construction Pte Ltd at the Padang. In addition, we also had a workers supporters’ team from SCC, captained by our very own Head Groundsman, Minnudin.

This game provided an opportunity for the workers to wind down from their daily routines and enjoy a game of cricket at an iconic location and against the backdrop of the city skyline. This game was supported by Active SG and was well played by both sides. It was an enjoyable day for everyone who attended. SINGAPORE SWIMMING CLUB July was crammed with Balutrelated events commencing with an invitation to SCC’s Balut Section Committee to attend Singapore Swimming Club’s (SSC) inaugural Balut night on 4 July. We were honoured to be the only Club to receive this invite and our committee members and partners turned out in full force to give support and enjoy SSC’s warm hospitality. Kudos to SSC’s Erica and Cassandra for organising everything. PADANG SHIELD On Saturday 9 July we battled with the SRC in the bi-annual Padang Shield competition hoping to wrest the Balut trophy back. At half-time SCC had a mere 14-point lead but this was transformed into a huge 416 point advantage at plays’ end. SCC and SRC finished with 9,126 and 8,710 points respectively. SCC INVITATIONAL PAIRS COMPETITION On Saturday 30 July, the SCC Invitational Pairs tournament took place at the Gilmour Room. We had 44 participants from SCC, IA, NUSS and SRC. There was a truly festive atmosphere and the winners of superb trophies were one of SCC’s most popular “Pairs” – Rosemary and Robin Tessensohn with a total of 1,250 points. Coming second place and collecting a bottle of wine each was SCC’s Mohan Dadlani and Yasmin Gaffoor with 1,207 points. TOURS The SCC has a strong contingent all signed up for an eagerly anticipated trip to Sarawak from 9 to 12 September. 25 to 27 November will see numerous clubs from Singapore and Sabah converging in Kota Kinabalu for the 36th STC Interport Balut competition. At stake is the coveted Chivas Regal Challenge Trophy. Interested participants from SCC are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.

IN-HOUSE BALUT 29 Baluteers enjoyed a very successful In-house monthly Balut gathering which was held on Tuesday 16th August. Some very high scoring was achieved, with Yeoh Foo Yong taking 1st place with a total score of 667. Jasmin Fisher was 2nd with 651, including a 150, and Cynthia Robless was 3rd with 632 with a 146 included. Determined not to be left out of the limelight was Anwar Gaffoor who scored a high of 158 in round 3. Soma Devi won the ‘Wooden Spoon’ with a combined score of 513, and thus was rewarded with a miniature bottle of Whisky. Deciding it was too heavy to carry home, she demolished the contents “down in one” to appreciative applause from fellow baluteers.

This is as sweet as sweet can get. Yes, we’ve been on a winning streak over the past few months! We have been champions of the tournament played at Royal Port Dickson Yacht Club, champions of the Padang Shield as well as champions of the Inter-club Snooker Invitational formerly known as Tri-Nations tournament – we have won them all!

The Padang Shield game was held on 9 July and we fielded our best possible team of five singles: Glenn Yeo, Jason Tan, Victor Yeong, Matthew Lim and Gerard Ee to match up against a tough competitor whom we have never won against for the past 16 years. As expected, SRC sprung up with a star-studded team comprising three Singapore National Players. Throughout the entire afternoon all the frames were fought with neck-to-neck results. Finally, it all boiled down to the decider frame played by SCC’s Victor Yeong who steadily clinched the frame and match with a nail-biting finish. This was also the decider for the Padang Shield! It was evident that SRC came to retain the Cup and with the gusto of our team it was evident that we were going to deny them of any such intentions, let alone, win the Cup. With their National team, they may have played great but our players were the greater. A sweet victory indeed especially after being denied and dry continually for 16 years. Congratulations to all the players! Well done indeed and a performance worthy to be watched again. The Royal Selangor Club hosted the Inter-club 6 Red Invitational tournament formerly known as Tri-Nations tournament, on 30 32

July which is now in its second cycle and eighth year since it first started. Our Convenor, Desmond Decker and Captain Tan Bak Choon led a team of highly spirited players: Peter Gilchrist, Glenn Yeo, Victor Yeong, Matthew Lim, Gerard Ee, and Jason Teo to compete in this tournament. We arrived a day earlier to play our Interport game with the Royal Selangor Club and won the Interport comfortably with a 7-1 score. The next day on 31 July, we arrived expeditiously for the toughest and most challenging tournament where we were to play five other strong teams from Thailand (Royal Bangkok Sports Club & Assumption Association) and Malaysia (Penang Sports Club, Royal Lake Club and Royal Selangor Club). For this tournament we fielded our best – Gerard Ee, Peter Gilchrist, Matthew Lim, Glenn Yeo and Victor Yeong. It was a very exciting day with several nail-biting finishing frames. Fuelled by the spirit of having won the Padang Shield, our team did extremely well by putting up an unrelenting fight with a never-give-up attitude. For that attitude they earned themselves a name – Champions of the Tournament! This is also the first time in the last eight years since the tournament started that we have won. Friendly at Tanglin Club
The Green has reopened On May 7 we had a “soft” reopening of The Green. It was good to have come home and we had a good day of bowls. Maybe it was the long absence. Maybe it was just meeting up on The Green and no less off The Green. May be it was just good to be out on The Green and it wasn’t even as hot out in the sun as it might have appeared. And another “R” Day was planned for June 11. On June 11 most of those who had signed up were at the bowls Verandah long before the event was due to begin. New shirts were given out and some members had put them on. Chairman Games Control Board was there ready to ring the bell to start the games. More arrivals. The Tournament Director had his bag with slips of paper and the day’s cards and it was getting late. Come on, TD! But he never opened his bag! Rain! It rained heavily in the morning. There was still light rain well past the start time. And all this came on top of overnight rain. The Green could not be prepared. There was to be no bowls for the day. But section members are made of sterner stuff. No bowls, so early after games F&B! And a good time was had by all. Tanglin Club Friendly For a few months before The Green was reopened, we were playing at the TC Green courtesy of its committee and members and we would have played many friendlies there. But June 16 was different. We had a friendly fixture and it was on our Green. SCC teams were: (1) Velu/Sabrina/Mary, (2) ECB/Retna/Rosemary, (3) Michael/ Prem/Amira, (4) Jennifer/Lew Foong/Chai, (5) Menon/Raymond/ George/Purush and (6) Eng-Han/Bala/TQ/Ganesh/KC. Bob, Ben and Matthew helped to make up the numbers for TC.
National Championships National Triples 2016 We entered two teams for the Men’s event and one team for the Women’s event. In the Men’s event both the teams of S R Ganesh/Edmund Lin/Christian Huang and Prem Anand/Hui Kai Wong/Melvin Tan qualified for the final play-offs. Unfortunately for Christian’s team he had a bad case of tendonitis and was under medical advice to rest and Edmund had work commitments overseas and it was not possible to reschedule their semi-final game. In the event Christian played with Ganesh and a substitute and they lost their semi-final. Melvin’s team just failed to win their semi-final in a close match. In the Women’s event the team of Candy Lai/Ming Li Chng/ Shermeen Lim reached the final which was played on 29 May. They won with an end to spare. Congratulations to Candy, Ming Li and Shermeen – Singapore Women’s National Triples Champions of 2016! National Fours 2016 We entered one team of Candy Lai/Ming Li Chng/Amira Goh/Shermeen Lim for the Women’s event and one Team of Mathew Ngui/Prem Anand/Hui Kai Wong/Melvin Tan for the Men’s event. With one game left in sectional play in the Men’s event to be played while we had completed our games we needed a tie in that game for SCC to reach the final but it was not to be. SCC failed to qualify for the play-off. The Women’s team reached the final and on 10 July, played against The Tanglin Club. They won by a very good score of 31-16. Congratulations to Candy, Ming Li, Amira and Shermeen – Singapore Women’s National Fours Champions of 2016.
It was nice to see the sun. It was nice to see so many on the Green. It was nice to see the new shirts in Club colours in the mix with the TC shirts. It was nice to meet up at the AMF&B (after match F&B) after the games. Unfortunately the Convenor could not remember the scores and the match was declared a draw! (Now, where are the scorecards?)

Participation and Plans The SCC Bridge Team hosted and took part in the seventh and final round of the Premier Bridge League. Eight teams took part and the season is now over. The SCC team had greatly improved from last year. Wishing the team greater success in 2017! The Section also made history on 9 July. For the first time Bridge was included in the Padang Shield games – a bi-annual event of games between SRC and SCC. The team overcame SRC in Bridge to help win the Padang Shield! The Section would like to thank the players for their invaluable contribution. Appreciation is also extended to the social group as it significantly contributed to the overall convivial atmosphere.

A special event was held on 11 July, in connection with Hari Raya celebration. Finger food was served. The winning pairs for the evening were Chris Wong/Edith Somogyi and Stephanie Hodges/ John Martens. Moving forward, the Section has several plans. For a start, at the point of writing, the National Day special event will be celebrated on 15 August with food and games. Second, training will be on going. An advertisement would be placed in the next Padang Magazine to inform SCC Members regarding the dates and cost of the training for beginners. It has also been confirmed that the Pot Games will take place on 1 October. During the year-end Christmas event, prizes would be awarded to the best pair of the year and the runners up. Prizes would also be given to the best pair of the night and the runners-up. SRC invited the Section Members to participate in an inter-club game on 14 August. To improve our game and competitive skills, friendly games every quarter between SCC, SRC, Keppel Club and KKBC are in the pipeline. Each club will host one event per year. In all, the rest of the year promises to be exciting and rewarding. 34

CRICKET YOUTH DEVELOPMENT (CYD) Reflecting on this current season, our SCC Cricket Youth Development (CYD) programme’s 2016 season has started well with the development of the new age groups at the Club. We have successfully expanded our CYD programme to start coaching players from the age of five. Previously the programme only accepted players from 13 years of age but since the appointment of our head coach (Ricky Anderson), support from our senior coach (Arun Vijayan), operational support from Riaz Hussien and affiliation with Howzat Cricket, we now have participating cricketers across all age groups.

The players should be commended for working hard so far this season. They have played a number of fixtures including matches with teams from overseas and have a number of upcoming fixtures to finish off the season well. We are looking forward to touring overseas which will develop the cricketers as individuals as well as players!

For the first time this year SCC fielded an Under 9 team in a local competition and following the experience it’s something we are excited to continue. We plan to enter an SCC U9s, U11s, U13s and U15s in this coming season to compete for the very first time in the Club’s history. These new developments are the foundation of our strategic goals which are fundamentally to develop players to their full potential, in order to enable them to represent SCC at the highest level. This year we had a number of cricketers from the CYD programme representing and making a valuable contribution to SCC Men’s Cricket. We were proud to have two stand-out players, Sean Agarwal and Paul Emannuel who made their debuts for the SCC Lions 1st Team! We look forward to others achieving similar successes next season and are committed to supporting each player’s personal development and goals. The CYD programme has the potential to develop even further from working with the expertise of Divaya GK who is the Singapore National Women’s captain. This gives us a perfect opportunity to promote girls cricket alongside supporting our current programme.
INTERSECTION NETBALL – 2016 KILBEE CUP On a blisteringly hot, cloudless Sunday morning late July, the SCC Cricket Section took on the SCC Netball Section for the annual Kilbee Cup. Proudly representing the Cricket section were Nick Power, Jack Whiskin, Joe Windscheffel, Adam Martin, Kevin Robertson, Matt Boardman and Shaneet Rai. While the event is more about getting the two sections together, for the record the Cricket Section did prevail 31-20. However, apart from a short burst of dominance by the lads, it was neck and neck for most of the game. Certainly the Cricket Section had the height and (remarkably given some varied fielding results this year) reasonable catching skills, the ladies of the Netball Section displayed a superior standard of skill and grace.

LADIES DARTS NIGHT 2 June was a night remembered by most ladies at SCC as we held our Annual Ladies Darts Night. We had an overwhelming response this year with close to 60 ladies participating in 16 teams. Tennis fielded three teams, Netball and Squash fielded two teams each, Balut, Bridge and Cricket fielded one team each and a team from the SCC Staff. The guest teams are: Darts Virgins, Get Set, Dulwich Damsels, Deft Darters, Flying High and Lorna Lasses. We also had great support on chalking and scoring from our male players – Mohan Balagopal, Kelvin Tan and Laurence O’Donovan. GOLF NEWS SCC played host to SRC at Seletar Country Club for the Padang Shield on 1 July. 20 selected competitive golfers from each club took part in the event with a couple of social flights to give support to the game. The result was a draw. The 19th-hole gathering was a much better and enjoyable part of the day. The food and drinks organised by Alvin Khoo and Vincent Ho and a little effort from Captain Chionh made the evening complete. The Section organised a SCC Inter-Section Golf game at the Singapore Island Country Club at the Old Course on 17 June, but Mother Nature had other plans – it was a total rain out that even the dinner had to be called off. We were glad the Billiards & Snooker, Cricket, Soccer and Tennis Sections managed to field some Members in support of the event and we were also glad to have the presence of our Deputy President Mr Zoher Motiwalla and GCB Chairman Mr Sher Baljit Singh as well. On 4 August, we had a social night gathering for Section Members at the Gilmour Room. At the time of writing, our Golf Secretary, Mike Dorris is organising a golf trip to Batam on 20-21 August, together with the Cricket and Rugby Sections; and the Annual Golf Tournament had been planned for 9 September. SCC WELL REPRESENTED AT HELM OF SINGAPORE HOCKEY AND BEYOND
SCC’s impact in both global and local hockey scenes alike is encouraging as our Club continues to make inroads into becoming “the” destination for hockey in Singapore. The Club’s location is awe inspiring.
Being an Olympic year, sports gains prominence the world over and Singapore is no different. Whether we get to watch the games live or delayed, withdrawals due to the wretched Zika virus or which stars are going to feature at the quadrennial games, everyone is interested. This interest is heightened for us here in Singapore in general and SCC in particular as our very own Mathavan Devadas is already in Rio, braving the Zika to serve as an Assistant Technical Delegate for hockey. This is Mat’s fourth Olympics for our SCC Hockey Section former Convenor and current Treasurer. The 56-year old said, “I’m looking forward to another spectacular show and to watch the best hockey players in the world in action (once again).” In the meantime, Mat’s year continues to impress as he was re-elected as President of the Singapore Hockey Federation at their annual general meeting held on 21 July. A long standing servant of the hockey fraternity, Mat was re-elected unopposed a testament to his sound leadership. Another popular member of the SCC Hockey Section was also returned into the SHF Council. Sean Chen will continue his role as a council member when he not too busy being the SCC Hockey Section’s social secretary.

Our monthly social hockey on the Padang is a grand sight especially with its setting against the sunset and the National Gallery Singapore. This is, if not the best, surely one of the best places to play hockey. The Hockey Section continues to bring in Junior Sports Members at regular intervals and hopes to bolster its ranks and build the future of hockey at our esteemed club. The 1st XI ladies boast no less than 20 JSMs in a squad of 30 and are preparing to rebuild our title winning team. These girls despite losing so many starting XI players this year are sitting in second spot in a highly competitive league with a slim chance of retaining their title. The 1st XI men are in third spot will have key matches to play in the coming weeks where we may make a title bid if other results go our way. The Netball calendar has been extremely busy this year. It has been an incredible year for us thus far and we are very excited at the prospect of bigger things to come. PADANG SHIELD We are extremely proud to announce that for the first time in netballing history, SCC has emerged as champions for the Padang Shield! The girls put up a mammoth fight against SRC, a Division 1 team in the National League. What an exhilarating match and despite all odds, we have come out on top.
AGM & NEW COMMITTEE The Section unanimously decided to nominate Sadaf to take on the role of Convenor for the second year running, while Alice remains as our Section Captain. Special thanks to both whom had done a fantastic job in leading the section to greater heights. A very warm welcome to our new additions – Penny as Vice-Captain and Carol as Secretary. What an outstanding first half of the year! Here are some snapshots of the best moments over the last few months. We will now be off for a good six weeks’ break but fret not; we will be back better and stronger. As always, we are constantly on the lookout for new members aged 13 and above. NATIONAL LEAGUE Following a successful Padang Shield campaign, the section also had cracking success in the National League this season. Huge congratulations to the Hawks who were up against tough competition and saw some of their players getting injured. Nonetheless, they managed to clinch the championship of their division undefeated. The Eagles faced some struggles during the season but their team spirit and perseverance helped them overcome these challenges. They eventually clinched second position in their division. Both teams will now be promoted to higher divisions next year. This season is arguably our best season yet. We could not have done it without the guidance from our amazing coach, Eric Lee. A massive thank you goes out to him.

KILBEE CUP The close ties between the Cricket and Netball Sections made for a thrilling Kilbee Cup match last weekend. Netball fielded a mixed team comprising Hawks and Eagles. The Cricket team comprising men from the Falcons (demonstrating the strength of our squads), gave us a run for our money, eventually securing the Cup by 11 points. Well done, guys! Kilbee Cup

The Colts trained rigorously in the weeks prior to the tournament and were determined to defend the title. The final was a tight affair against Saints. Both teams were held to a deadlock in the first half and Saints pushed forward with a win in the final, so the boys had to settle for second place.

The official “off season” started in April and was to run until October, however there was no rest for the rugby nuts at SCC. There have been a number of tours and tournaments over the past 4 months, reflecting the more social side of rugby. The Growlers recently took part in the inaugural “Muddy Penny Cup”. This was a league designed purely for players aged over 35, often referred to as “veterans”. There was a HUGE emphasis on the social side of rugby, both on and off the pitch. Not only the foolhardy players were asked to dust off the boots but all WAGS and kids being encouraged to come down to enjoy the spectacle of running rugby and enjoy some fine food, glass of bubbles and special kid’s entertainment laid on. Four clubs entered teams into the cup; Bucks, XV Gaulois, Wanderers and SCC. The tournament was a round robin format over 10 weekends. Unique and oldschool rugby rules were strictly enforced by each team’s captain and manager. The Growlers reached the final but with a few key players away due to school holidays etc. we couldn’t match the larger squad numbers that Bucks were able to put out. Action from the Men’s 7s tournament Taylor Hayes (Captain) The final went into extra time and Bucks were victorious with a golden try! This was a great tournament and we are aiming to partake next year. A call out to all current, former and curious rugby players aged over 35. We need you in 2017!
The SRU Club U18s 7s tournament followed and the Colts fielded two teams for the tournament “SCC Black” and “SCC Gold”. The Blacks reached the plate final but narrowly lost to the Bedok Kings in the plate final. SSC Gold were up against Saints in what was a cracking final, Luca Mignot, 16 years old (Youngest player in the team) which was sent into extra time however they went down in the sudden death. The young players that stood out for the U18s in the 7s and were from the academy: Ryan Andriesz, Hadi Rahmen, Naufal Fitri Bin Samri, Muhammad Izzu & Muhammad Ali. Next in line was the Club Men’s 7s. SCC has been the champions for the past eight years. After some classic backline manoeuvers we made it to the final and this was truly a final to remember with many twist and turns. Both teams were brilliant in defence and the score remained 5-0 at half time. The second half proved to be tougher than the first but SCC held strong and won the final 14-12 to be the National Club 7s champions of 2016. Truly a remarkable effort from all the squad, especially Eugene Yang, Bryan Lim and Calum Ferguson who volunteered their time to help and support the team throughout the campaign. Looking ahead we have some import games coming up. In early September, several teams from SCC will be touring to HK to play HKFC. This will be quickly followed by the Club hosting the HKCC on the Padang, also in September. Then in early November (4-6 Nov) the Club will be hosting The Annual SCC Rugby 7’s Tournament. These are all annual fixtures and are not only highlights on the calendar but reflect the strong bond of rugby across Asia. Roarrrrr.
The Nomads had a very successful recent tour to Taiwan in June to play the Taipei Baboons RFC. The Nomads were captained by Sam Flint and the team was made up of players from all grades in the Club. The final score was SCC 22 – Taipei Baboons 5. After a long, tiring and fruitful XV’s season, a group of extraordinary gentlemen with an exquisite taste for speed, flair and skills embraced the 7 a side game and the Club have recently partaken in four tournaments. Bryan Lim took a squad of enthusiastic Colts to Langkawi for the International 7s tournament. This was the first rugby tour for several of the colts who did us proud making the bowl quarter finals. CUP GLORY FOR THE SOCCER SECTION There have been three momentous Cup successes for the SCC over the past few weeks. The Firsts finished as Cosmo League Cup Winners, beating the British Casuals on penalties after it finished 3-3 in extra time. They also finished runners up in the Cosmo League missing out by only two points. There was also a respectable outing at the HKFC 7s; drawing 0-0 with West Ham, losing to Leicester City 3-0 and drawing 1-1 with Hong Kong U21, before getting knocked out by Stoke City 2-0. The month was rounded off with a testimonial for John Spackman, who has left our shores to Dubai. A mix of Firsts vs Pads, providing an 8-6 thriller.

This was followed up by a 4-0 demolition of a good local side Kingsman 16. Joseph Azran (Yossi) and Sze Boon share top spot in the Pads’ goal-scoring charts. The SCC Tigers beat Singapore mainstays the Vikings 7-1, before falling to the Purple Monkeys 3-1. A 2-1 win over the Barbarians followed, before four goals from Jahan Rezai helped crush Matador FC 6-2. After a 2-1 win over St Davids of Wales, a mixed bag of results, including a 3-0 cup semi-final win over Teamcuzz saw the month of July end with a rousing 8-0 win over the British Exiles.
The Strollers also won a final, the Equatorial Cup, against the British First XI. Both goals came in the second half. Chang Guo Guang whipped in a near-post free kick, excellently turned in by Jamie Mowle for the first. The second came from a free kick on the halfway line which Martin Goerojo hoisted forwards, clearing everyone including the keeper. Since losing four games in a row, the 3rds have ridden on a bamboozling 10-match winning streak. Top scorer Lloyd Branson has now netted 32 times and must surely be the section’s leading marksman this year? By way of celebration, Hari Raya feasting in the Courtyard capped a 3rds tradition of having a foodie get together around the major festivals in Singapore. The Squash Section is losing not one but two of these individuals who have given much of their time to organise and captain teams.

Anders had played at the highest level, playing professionally on the PSA circuit for a couple of years, extensive league squash with/against PSA players in England and had previously represented Denmark at the European Championships. He had the classic “English style” of play – consistently excellent length, exceptionally tight, patient as Job and always made his (frustrated!) opponent play that extra shot. Anders was supremely fit, deceptively quick and had the flexibility of an East European gymnast. Anders joined SCC in 2010 and was an integral player in our A Grade winning side the past six years playing at both No. 1 and No. 2 and winning close to 90% of his matches often beating National players and National juniors half his age. He was always ready to have a hit with and guide the Juniors (and Seniors!) and enjoyed a glass, or two, of wine off the court. Anders will be sorely missed both socially and by the A Grade team as he was our “Mr. Dependable” (didn’t lose a single league match in 2010), we wish him and his lovely family all the very best as they start their new chapter back home in Denmark.
Terry Scott, returning to Salisbury in UK, has captained both the Terry and Tim say farewell C grade squash team for many years and run the Cosmo League for SCC. His other major contribution to SCC is that he is the most featured quiz master at SCC quizzes.

Tim Howard is our anglicised American who is moving to Bangkok. Apart from being a regular squash player Tim is an international lacrosse referee. In his spare time between running the D grade and Cosmo league for the section, he spends his time watching Coronation Street and Eastenders. In terms of UK sport, he is an avid Manchester United fan and has even blagged his way into the Members Pavilion at Lord’s on the first day of a test match and recalled that “they all speak like Adrian” (Cowell). Whilst Tim, may pay a return visit from time to time, we will miss them both and are desperately seeking new blood to undertake the sterling work they have done for the Section over the years.

TENNIS: A SPORT FOR A LIFETIME
GET ACTIVE SCC FUN DAY – 31 JULY 2016!
As all at the Tennis Section would probably agree, tennis is really a lifetime sport – you can play it at any age and still enjoy the game. The following articles show how different people at different ages embracing the sport. As much as it is a lifetime sport, conditioning matters! So remember, don’t play tennis to get fit, you also have to get fit to play tennis.
In conjunction with GetActive SG’s activities during July’s carfree Sundays around the civic district, the Tennis Section took part in SCC’s Fun Day. This event offered kids from the age of 5 to 16 a chance to try out multiple sports and it was our hope that they would choose tennis as their favourite.
LADIES WIN SILVER IN INTERCLUB KNOCKOUT TOURNAMENT The start of the doubles season began in June when SCC’s Men’s A, C and Ladies’ A team took part in the interclub doubles. Unlike the round robin format in the doubles tournament in September/October, this format was a knockout. The Men’s A and C team were unable to progress far due to stiff competition but the Ladies’ A team emerged runners-up in their category. The Ladies’ team overcame Keppel Club’s talented team, to set up a final showdown against the Japanese club Sanwa. Intense battles were fought on the day of the finals, leading to our ladies winning one out of three doubles tie, and narrowly losing the first set of another match.
The 0730hrs Sunday morning start was hard on the coaching team but there was no time for yawning nor snoozing as the kids and teens kept us on our toes. To manage the children’s unstoppable energy, the session included games like ‘Poison Balls’ and ‘It’s Raining Balls’ to train their hand-eye coordination and some volley drills. Thank you to Adam, Sturmer, Martin Goerojo, Jo Stevenson and Vincent Boissac for the help in keeping the kids entertained.
Eventually our ladies lost 1-2 to the better team that day, but we can be sure they’ll be back. So far the Ladies’ team won the singles league A and B titles in March this year, and will gear up for the next doubles season in September.

JULY’S LAST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH – GAME, SET… & PIMM’S! On the 29 July, the social tennis players were on the courts, mostly decked in white, eager to serve (Raonic-style) and volley. Fortunately no injuries were sustained in this endeavour and the players were rewarded for their efforts with jugs of Pimm’s to celebrate another successful year of Wimbledon. We love tennis!
