CLUB NEWS
Dear Members,
I never expected to be writing this “message”. However, following the very sad passing of Mike Grice, and of the Club’s Rules requiring the election of a new President to fulfil the GC’s Term of Office I find myself writing this message. I take this opportunity to sincerely thank Members for their confidence in me and I am confident my colleagues on the GC will continue the good works started under Mike Grice’s stewardship. I assure Members that I shall, to the very best of my ability move the Club forward in the successful completion of its year’s work. Dialogue Session In line with the Club’s continued promise of transparency in Committee business and to keep Members abreast of on-goings at the SCC I look forward to welcoming Members to the ‘Dialogue Session’ on 25 November to share and informally exchange views, comments, and suggestions on Finance, Development Projects, SCC SG50 planned events, as well as Membership matters - to name but a few.
Mohan J Bhojwani President Singapore Cricket Club
Development Projects Much has been happening behind the scenes in the planning and preparation for the Club’s Development Project. The Committee will share further information with Members during the ‘Dialogue Session’ and I shall update all on the ‘Feedback’ received and progress made in the months to come. Preparations for the 2015 National Day Parade and other planned events surrounding the Government’s sponsored SG50 celebrations will impact the Padang and consequently Club sports and tournaments from mid-March to November 2015. Plans for the Club’s ‘second’ ground at Dempsey Field are well in-hand to upgrade and greatly enhance the amenities to the existing sporting and social facilities. SCC Night Race Fiesta The recently concluded SCC Night Race Fiesta weekend proved yet again to be one of the most exciting events this year. Members and their guests were treated to three days of high-octane and adrenaline fuelled motor racing at the ‘Singapore Sling’ on Asia’s first ever night race street circuit. With an abundance of food, drinks and live concerts from local, regional and international performing artistes, not even the Saturday night rain could dampen our enjoyment of the spectacle. 67th International Rugby 7s Tournament The 67th International Rugby Sevens Tournament 2014 in the ‘company’ of a new Title Sponsor - Societe Generale returned to the historic Padang over the last weekend of October. Rugby enthusiasts witnessed thrilling rugby in this one-of-a-kind annual sporting event. The Tournament would not have been possible without the support and contribution of our Title Sponsor, Sponsors, Box Patrons and Advertisers and I convey my very grateful thanks to all associated with this festival of Rugby Football Union. Remembrance Day Members are cordially invited to attend the annual Remembrance Day Memorial Service at the Cenotaph on 11 November. The SCC is proud to uphold the tradition of its past in our observance of, and discharge of our debt of honour to those fallen men and women in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts of arms that so cruelly continue into our present. Christmas 2014 Members, family, friends and guests can look forward to a warm welcome and ‘good cheer’ this coming yuletide season. Join us at our Christmas Wine and Cheese Party on 14 November. Also, treat your little ones to a magical day of carnival games, songs and dance this December and save a date with Santa Claus! New Year’s Eve Party I invite readers to a taste of oriental splendour at the SCC’s ‘Shanghai Night’ New Year’s Eve Ball. 2015 beckons as a truly historic year in view of the island-wide celebrations of SG50 taking centre stage in Singapore’s calendar. We, at the SCC, very much look forward to actively participating in the milestone events that are planned - and I hope you will be able to join us too. In closing, the GC and I wish all Members a very Merry Christmas 2014 and a Happy New Year in 2015.

he Secretary of the Singapore Cricket Club after World War II until his death in 1966 was Brigadier Eric John (Tim) Denholm-Young. During the war, his career was distinguished and he served in Burma (now Myanmar) where he was Commander of the 123rd Indian Infantry Brigade from July 1944 to August 1945. Later, he was the first General officer from the 5th Indian Division to land on and liberate Singapore from the Japanese on Sept 5, 1945. The first British ships approached Singapore that morning, and, on landing at Keppel Harbour, Denholm-Young was met by a Japanese interpreter on the staff of General Seishiro Itagaki, Commander-inChief of the 7th Area Army in Singapore.
On landing at Keppel Harbour, Brigadier Denholm-Young was met by a Japanese interpreter on General Itagaki’s staff. Photo from Ball Of Fire: 5th Indian Division In World War II by Antony Brett-James, 1951
From the 5th Division’s diary (in Ball Of Fire: 5th Indian Division In World War II by Antony Brett-James, 1951): “The first troops of the Division ashore were “D” Company of the 2/1st Punjab, under Major Niaz Mohammed Arbad. The battalion was met by two senior Japanese officers who wore ceremonial swords and highly polished jackboots. All were standing rigidly to attention, at the salute. Behind them again was parked a line of glittering civilian cars, each with a booted chauffeur. “On the main wharf, Brigadier Eric John Denholm-Young, Commanding Officer of the 123rd Indian Brigade, was met by one Major General Shimura who was staff officer to General Itagaki. And soon after midday, Denholm-Young held a conference with a number of senior Japanese officers, who showed themselves most helpful. All went as had been planned during the voyage, and no opposition was met.” It is not known when Denholm-Young became Secretary of the SCC but his last days with the Club were not happy. From the official history of the Club (the year is 1966, and the President is Andrew Gilmour):
“Although the Club now showed its first surplus - $2,576 - since 1957, thanks to “drastic economies”, said the committee, the need to trim staff was still pressing. “The committee reluctantly came to the conclusion that the Club could no longer afford the Secretary, Brigadier Denholm-Young …. … “The Brigadier was notified by letter that his job had gone while he was on leave. “It was a long, very careful, tactful letter,” said Gilmour. [Gilmour was President from 1962
to 1967 and the Brigadier served during much of this period.] “But in a tragic irony which embarrassed Gilmour and his committee for years afterwards, the letter arrived shortly after Denholm-Young had died while holidaying in Germany, and was opened by his grieving Singaporean Chinese widow. By all accounts, she took this additional blow very badly.” Denholm-Young is buried in the Military Cemetery at Kranji, which is still open to a select few, including veterans who were involved in the liberation of Singapore. His headstone reads in part: “An outstanding leader, courageous soldier, loyal friend and a devoted father. Well done, thou good and faithful servant. He leaves behind his loving wife Grace, daughters Diana, Nicola and Hazel.” Sources: Singapore At War: Secrets From The Fall, Liberation And Aftermath Of World War II by Romen Bose, 2012 The Singapore Cricket Club by Ilsa Sharp, 1993 November / December 2014

Wines of the Month
November / December 2014
Luis Felipe Edwards Gran Reserva Merlot 2012
Luis Felipe Edwards Gran Reserva Chardonnay 2012
This wine shows a bright deep rugby red colour with violet hues. In the nose are complex layers of red fruit, such as dark cherry, spices, licorice, tobacco and black tea. It is smooth and fat in the mouth with a persistent and fresh finish.
A fragrant complex wine with elegant aromas of citrics, pineapple, honey, nuts and almonds. Ideally suited to traditional Chardonnay matches like seafood and light game dishes.
$49.00 per bottle | $10.00 per glass
$49.00 per bottle | $10.00 per glass
Hardy’s VR Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Hardy’s Mill Cellars Shiraz 2012 Bright cherry and raspberry fruit aromas, with slight overtones of spice and sweet vanillan oak. The wine has a juicy yet soft texture with fine tannins and a dry finish. A lingering subtle underlying oak flavour complements and adds complexity to the wine. $45.00 per bottle | $9.80 per glass
Vina Ijalba Reserva Rioja Viña Ijalba has gained much acclaim in Spain and internationally for their terrific work with organic viticulture, as well as their championing of obscure indigenous varietals. These wines are among the few modern Riojas that truly impress for their sense of balance and style without sacrificing their Rioja soul. $49.00 per bottle | $10.00 per glass
Ronan By Clinet A.O.C. Rouge 2010 100% merlot grapes are used, and the result is a wine bursting with morello cherries, plums and subtle spice, and that is fleshy and ripe with an incredible finish. Regarded as one of Bordeaux’s greatest vintages, 2010 produced broad-shouldered, concentrated wines with fresh acidity, high alcohol and extraordinary ageing potential. Received 91 points from James Sucklin. $53.00 per bottle | $11.00 per glass
A classic Sauvignon Blanc with pale straw, green hue. It has a lifted citrus, tropical and herbaceous aroma. A clean tropical palate with passion fruit, herbaceous grassy lift and a crisp finish. $45.00 per bottle | $9.80 per glass
Vina Ijalba Genoli Viura Rioja Fine, herb scented stuff, not too Kiwi Sauvignonlike with great apple punch and vibrancy. Nice in its less flamboyant, honest and refreshing. $48.00 per bottle | $10.00 per glass
Giesen Estate Pinot Noir 2012 An expressive wine with aromas of red cherry, plum, dry spice and earthy mushroom notes. The vibrant fruit driven palate shows concentrated red fruit with savoury flavours and well-rounded yet firm tannin with great length. The palate will develop greater richness and complexity with time in the bottle. 3 stars - Michael Cooper Buyer’s Guide 2013 $50.00 per bottle | $11.00 per glass
Ronan by Clinet A.O.C. Bordeaux Blanc 2012 Ronan says they experimented with many different styles, and took one year to decide on the best one, tried a more ‘typical Bordeaux’ zesty white but decided this more luxurious style matches better with the Clinet signature. It’s fairly rare to find this style of white Bordeaux, with lemon rind and orange blossom, and should have a slightly longer drinking window than most Entre deux Mers wines… $53.00 per bottle | $11.00 per glass November / December 2014

From a sleek and stylish race car simulator at the Main Lounge, to strategically place life-sized balloon sculptures at the Padang restaurant, every nook and cranny of the Club was transformed into party central heaving with breathless excitement. Charming both Members and guests, the bevy of race queen beauties added to the glitz and glamour of Asia’s first street circuit night race. There were photo opportunities aplenty with performance stilt walkers and brightly lit table-top girls parading around the Club. The little ones were not forgotten as they had their own private set-up in the “children’s room” where amusement was earned watching movies and playing Wii video games. As part of the SCC’s efforts at community engagement, the fun and excitement of the races was extended to 10 members of the Boys Town. Peter Gilchrist
Billiards Champion
2
014 Singapore Sportsman of the Year, Peter won the World Professional Billiards titles (WPBSA) in 1994 and 2001 and the International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF – WBL) World Billiards Limited title in 2013. A Member of the Singapore Cricket Club, Peter’s passion for billiards blossomed at the age of 10 when he started playing at the full-sized table at the local fire station. Skyrocketing through the ranks, this natural sportsman won the prestigious English Amateur Championship in 1988 before turning professional the year after. This billiards extraordinaire discovered his inclination for the cue sport one snowy morning when his regular football session was cancelled. Peter took to the game like fish to water. He vividly recalls playing the game everyday after school at the local fire station making it his daily routine for four years. Peter was 16 years of age when he began playing seriously. Peter mastered the techniques of billiards after obtaining a formal coaching certificate in 1999. This dedicated sportsman firmly advocates the investment of time and commitment to any sport one has passion for. On what makes a champion, Peter believes the more one trains, the better one would get. The 2015 SEA Games to be hosted by Singapore is another competition that has got him on his toes! Peter hopes to garner four wins which is one more than the previous year.
2014 Singapore Sportsman of the Year
Peter’s most significant win is his first World Championship title in 1994. He had been defeated in the past and had never won the title previously hence it meant a great deal for him to have clinched it through sheer persistence. The SCC recognises talent like Peter’s and is indeed proud of his many accomplishments. Says Peter, “I feel at home at the SCC, its people are warm and friendly, and, the food is good too – especially the fish and chips, my favourite!” The SCC wishes him the very best of luck in all future tournaments! GILES ROCHE TROPHY
INTER-SECTION BOWLS By Dr K U Menon
9 teams gather for battle on the Green
T
his event is an annual fixture in the bowls calendar and was initiated more than three decades back by the late Giles Roche to bring together members from all sporting sections of the Club for a day of fun and sportsmanship, and to promote the game of lawn bowls. This year a total of 9 Sections competed with each other, playing triples with 2 bowls each. Each team had to play a minimum of 4 matches - 6 ends or 20mins …followed by the semi-final / final match to determine the winners.
sunny month of October. But sadly, neither Giles Roche nor the committee anticipated the phenomenon of climate change.
In earlier years, the event was traditionally held in late November after the Rugby 7s. But in 2011 and the subsequent year, rains of biblical proportions reduced our bowlers to despair and a decision was made thereafter to carry it forward to the warmer
In the pre-match spider event, John Spackman from Darts secured the first prize of a bottle of wine. Curiously, it was the two in-door sports of Billards and Snooker (2nd time running) and Balut that came in first and second in the overall competition followed by Hockey in 3rd place.
And a jingle-dy here / a jingle-dy there?
Watch me and learn….. !
.. and this children, is how you hold a lawn bowl...
Whilst it was a warm sunny day alright, a thick dirty yellowish brown haze from Sumatra with a psi reading hovering around 100 + descended, and to paraphrase T S Eliot from The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock, “licked its evil tongue into all corners of the Green, and let fall on every bowler, the dirty brown soot that falls from chimneys”.

Saptak Sautra
A strong turnout at the Padang
M
any gathered in the early light of dawn at the Padang on 12 October for the Bali Memorial Dawn Service. It was twelve years ago when bombs ravaged the ill-fortuned Paddy’s Bar in Kuta, Bali, taking the lives of many, including eight SCC rugby players who were on a rugby tour - Chris Kays, Tim Arnold, Neil Bowler, Chris Bradford, Dave Kent, Peter Record, Chris Redman, Charlie Van Renen.
Rugby Section Members Sam Sharpe, Saptak Sautra and Peter Mcfeely delivered some words in remembrance and honour of the men lost that day. The strong turnout at the Padang was commendable, especially when many who attended never knew the men who were killed. The display of solidarity and sporting spirit by our Members is a heartening affirmation of the Club’s values.
In attendance at the memorial were Members of the SCC Rugby Section, SCC Club Members from the various Sporting Sections, SCC General Committee, representatives from other rugby clubs in Singapore, as well as representatives from the British and Australian High Commissions. The stirring sounds of the bagpipes courtesy of the Gurkhas amplified the solemnity of the service that Sunday morning.
The Rugby Section would like to thank all Club staff for their organisation of the Bali Memorial Dawn Service.

Our visit to the inaugural Invitational Interclub Balut Competition at the Sarawak Club from Friday 22 August to Monday 25 August was marred by the sad news of the death of Club President Michael Grice, which reached us in the early hours on Sunday morning. Mike was a strong supporter of the Balut Section, and he will be missed. The SCC sent 18 players to Kuching. Although we missed out on team honours, which went to Singapore Eurasian Association on a total of 3,127 points, followed by Kinabalu Club on 3,123 points, we did well individually, with Rolv Stokkmo in first place with a total score of 833, and Soma Devi in third place with 829.

We thank the Sarawak Club for its warm hospitality. Many SCC tourists extended their stay till Monday in order to explore Kuching. Team 1 won the final league match and the overall year’s trophy for the second consecutive year with the same team as last year: John Taylor, Raj Kumar, Ben Cunico & Rolv Stokkmo.

competing 4 singles and 3 doubles. SCC emerged winners after the fun and competitive games, well done to all the players!
The SCC in-house tournaments are on-going and we have just completed our Snooker handicap, where our veterans Mr. Manu Bhojwani and Mr. Tan Bak Choon met face to face in the Finals. It was an exciting and nail-biting match as Manu stretched Bak Choon to his fullest before Bak Choon emerged as the Champion. The Billiards 3-balls Open commences on 26 September 2014, and the current World Billiards Champion, Mr. Peter Gilchrist, will be participating too. Do make sure to find out the match schedules and come watch the World Champion in action!
Tony Church Snooker Trophy - Tanglin Pot (27 September) hosted by Tanglin Club, format 5 singles and 2 doubles. We played in the new Billiards room in Tanglin Club (TC). Our players were Peter Gilchrist, Victor Yeong, Matthew Lim, Sunil, Jason Tan, Jason Teo, Bak Choon, KC Chew and David Yim. We received a warm hospitality from our TC friends as always and with some luck (and the World Champion on our side), SCC won the Trophy – Congratulations to the team! We are glad that our billiards room is now slightly cooler with the temporary cooler units in place, however we are all looking forward to having our new air-conditioning system installed very soon so we can provide a more comfortable and conducive environment for all the players.

FIRST IN THE POT Queen: What sport shall we devise here in this garden, To drive away the heavy thought of care? First Lady: Madam, we’ll play at bowls. William Shakespeare (Richard II, Act III, Scene IV): Whilst August was a busy, frenetic month for the Bowls Section as we played host to one of the key events in the Bowls calendar - the 13th Annual Triangular Games with RBSC and KBGC, September offered our Members some respite. In the closing months of the year, there was finally much to “drive away the heavy thought of care” as our bowlers went on to secure a firm victory in the first game in the POT series played at the Tanglin Bowling Green on 7 Sept. Tanglin’s bowlers played exceedingly well but SCC triumphed in the last few ends, winning 4 rinks to 2.
And the Ladies show just how it is to be done
Our young bowlers, Shermeen, Ming Li and Melvin also did us proud soon after, coming in champions in the National Mixed Pairs played at the Kallang Green on 7 & 14 September. Shermeen played a big part in leading the team to the semi-final stage, before Ming Li took over from her, as she had to leave for personal reasons.

The Section has had our fair share of exciting events this past year, both within the Club as well as in conjunction with other associations. To commemorate our 49th National Day, the Section held a special event in the Gilmour Room where Members dressed in traditional red and white while feasting on a scrumptious buffet spread. A best-dressed contest was also held with Mr. Thomas Vettath and Mrs. Chitra Varaprasad clinching the top awards.

CA Under-16 Tournament We started our tournament in grand fashion defeating Indian Association by 25 runs. We were sent in to bat against IA after losing the toss. We had a good start but lost our way in the middle and end overs, which only allowed us to reach a modest 125. It’s a reasonable and defendable score, because we knew our bowlers could back us up, and we were right. IA lost wickets early and never got going. Our next game was against ANZA who we sent in to bat. We wrapped them up for 100 runs in 30 overs, SCC under-16 team with Mrudul taking 3 wickets. To get the full 10 points we had to finish the game in 16.5 overs. We succeeded and won by 4 wickets. We had to play our next two games on the same day and we needed to win at least one to qualify for the finals as we were second only behind SCA.
The second game was a warm-up for the finals as we were facing the team we would be playing in the finals, SCA. We lost the toss and were sent in to field, with SCA managing a mammoth 219 for the loss of three wickets in 30 overs. It was always going to be tough to chase this total and we lost by 47 runs. Despite this, there were good batting performances from Shan with 64 and Paul, who made 38. Finals day had arrived, the day we had trained for and were looking forward to. We were sent in to field first after losing the toss. SCA this time managed a less imposing 179, mainly thanks to economical bowling by Paul and Rishab. Our innings started off poorly, losing both Ryan and Utkarsh within the first 5 overs. Shan and Brigu Iyer who both performed well throughout the tournament, were batting confidently and we were on course for victory as long as they remained. The match came down to the wire. Shan on strike, 3 to get of the last ball. We had our hearts in our mouths. Unfortunately, Shan couldn’t dig out a yorker after playing so well. We lost by 2 runs, a heartbreaking finale, but were still runners-up of the SCA Under 16 league. We came so far, thanks to coaching and assistance from Coach Riaz , Arun, Arit and Arooran. Shan, Brigu and Utkarsh got honorable mentions for consistent performances throughout, with Shan receiving the player of the tournament award.
Shan Pervaiz and Brigu Iyer
These two games were to be played at Kallang, a turf ground where many of the team had never played. Our first game was against MUCC who had previously lost all their games and were looking to reach the 3rd and 4th place final by defeating us. We batted first and scored 163 with good contributions from Paul Immanuel and Shan Pervaiz. In the 5th over of the MUCC innings, the rain gods started to play. When we came back into the field, their target was 100 in 17 overs. It seemed to be going their way with the target only another 80 in 12 overs, but good spells from Mrudul and Arrunava brought the game back and won it for us. We had reached the finals for the second time in 3 years.

arts Ladies Night The month of August was eventful for the Darts committee with two events; one was the Darts Ladies’ Night, and the second, a friendly Darts Game against the British High Commission. The Darts Exco Members organized the 2nd Intersection Darts Ladies’ Night Tournament this year. The event was indeed a success with a total number of 7 sections participating; Balut, Bridge, Darts, Netball, Squash, Tennis and our very own SCC staff members. The Squash Section ladies, having lost last year were determined to do a better job this year by submitting two teams (and being the only section to do so) appropriately named Squash Crashers and Squash Tarts. Despite the competitive spirit from each Section, the night was filled with fun and laughter. The night opened with a speech and toast from our Darts’ Convenor, Fathima. The Winners were: • 1st - Squash Crashers • 2nd - Darts Section • 3rd - Squash Tarts The Darts Committee would like to thank Mr Nigel Stearns in supporting this yearly event for the SCC staff participation. Special thanks go out to our sponsors, Glow International for their complimentary Facial Vouchers, Mr Rajan Menon for sponsoring the champagne and wine for the ladies. This event would not have been a success without the support of our Darts Men’s Captain Mr Philip Ng, Vice-captain Mr Jeroen Goldman and co-opted Member Mr Mohan Balagopal who held their own in a veritable sea of oestrogen.

Friendly’s against British High Commission On 21 August evening, the SCC hosted 25 members of The British High Commission. We played 7 singles, 6 doubles, 4 mixed doubles. The game format was 501, best of 3 games, Fly start and Double Finish. Although a close fight (we are being polite, we were the clear winners), the SCC came through as the champions. However, the British High Commission staff were very gracious runner ups, offering to host the SCC in the future which we can hopefully look forward to. We had a great turn up from the SCC Darts Section Members. It was an event where everyone had great fun! Members can look forward to the Annual Darts Year End Party on 12 December.

‘Tis the season to be jolly (hockey sticks)!’
C
hristmas is just around the corner but thankfully in Singapore that doesn’t mean getting the thermals on to take to the pitch! The sun continues to shine and hockey action continues…. La Liga… The women are currently sitting at the top of this competitive, 9-a-side league after some tough matches in the afternoon sun at Delta. Competition ends on 29 November so here’s hoping there is a trophy coming our way… In the Men’s corner… The 4th XI are currently sitting in the top three of the league and the 5th XI are not far behind in mid-table. Good luck to both sides who are both aiming for top finishes over the coming weeks. The SCC head-to-head will certainly be one to go and watch!
The next generation… The Hockey SCChool is going down a storm! With a staggering 56 juniors in the programme, Kanan puts them through his paces every Saturday morning and they are busy preparing for the National Junior League, which just began last month (October). Friendly Fire… The United Emirates Hockey Club visited Singapore mid-August to play in the Balestier Lions International Hockey 5s and they played a friendly match against a mixed SCC men’s team during their visit. Following the match, wonderful SCC hospitality was bestowed upon them in the Gilmour Room. Food, drinks, speeches, pleasantries and plaques were exchanged as tokens of appreciation. Black and Gold… 15th November marks the annual Hockey Section Dinner with the all-important AGM to begin proceedings. We say a big goodbye and thank you to the old committee and hello and good luck to the newbies! Without you, we wouldn’t be such a great section! Going with the Club colours theme of ‘Black and Gold’ you can be sure of some fancy frocks and lots of frolicking! Check out the photos and winners in the next issue of the Padang! One night in Bangkok… The annual outing to Bangkok takes place from the 5th-7th December. One men’s and one women’s team will celebrate the Kings Birthday with some fast and furious action on and off the pitches at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. And finally, some wise words from Coach Kanan…. “Although I always like SCC to win, I like to think there has to be a certain class in the way we do so. I look forward to many classy wins in the months ahead.” Enough said!

Netball Intersection & JSM Carnival It is also time for the yearly edition of the Netball Intersection and JSM carnival. The inaugural JSM carnival was a roaring success last year and the Section is looking to replicate the success of this again this year and continue building the interest of JSMs to join the team. We are also busy planning for intersection and are looking forward to all other Sections showing their support for a day of laughs and re-visiting rivalries (watch out Cricket Section….) Social Activities As we head towards Christmas, the Section has a packed social calendar in the next few months, starting with our captain cocktails to celebrate and give recognition to the ladies, Anna and Katy, taking charge of our netball ‘careers’. The Annual Netball Christmas party is also on the cards as is a team bbq to get us going for the upcoming netball season.
Nan, our JSM Liaison
I
t’s been a quiet couple of months for the Netball Section as we took a bit of well-deserved downtime after back-to-back competitions and activities this year. The summer break has definitely allowed our batteries a re-charge as we hit the courts once again with trainings leading up to our year-end league.
And while we party the last 2 months of the year away, we will be missing our dear JSM liaison, Nan, who has left us, temporarily though, to pursue her education in the UK. We are already missing the firecracker who displayed true passion in all that she has done for the Section; growing the JSM intake, organizing umpires, volunteering for any social event and just being there, on and off the court, injured or not. We look forward to your return Nan! And on that note, if you are interested in any of our netballing activities, competitive or social, male or female, we always have a place for you. Drop us a note at sccnetball@gmail.com for more information!
Bedok Kings Mini Tournament During the summer break, the Netball team participated in a mini tournament organized by Bedok Kings as part of hosting a touring team from Perth. Taking every competition seriously, we came prepared and ready for action! We played a round robin format with quick, short matches, and managed to sit comfortably at the top of the leader board throughout the tournament and clinch that top spot. As a cherry on the top, the team took home a few bottles of wine and is due for a well-deserved celebration soon! Definitely a good way to start off the new netball season. And while action on the court has been quiet, the newly elected committee has been busy planning a whole host of activities on and off the court so the Netball ladies will be back in full force as we head towards the end of the year! Year-End League We have got our year-end league starting and as we work our way towards this, training is now taking centre stage with friendly matches sprinkled in to get the ladies back to form after the break. Trainings have been predominantly outside the Club lately with the many social events and international

The SCC and HKFC Teams following the Annual Bali Memorial Match
Lots and lots of rugby in September!
I
t is saying something about the strength of the Rugby Section when it can field over 90 players to play rugby in one weekend in two countries.
65 tourists went up to Hong Kong to play against Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC) on Saturday 13 September 2014. The SCC Growlers, Nomads and of course Prems were all out in force at the Club’s legendary stadium that Saturday afternoon. At 2.30pm the Growlers kicked off against the HKFC Old Contemptibles in the 30 degree heat and 98% humidity, not the most pleasant of environments, but the grizzled veterans took it in their stride. At stake was the Mars Bar Bowl. The Growlers’ legendary pack totally dominated the scrums with the tight play and pounded the Contemptibles’ defensive line. Fantastic play from Captain Dave Griffiths and the pack had Growlers leading by half time (5:10), until the big man was finally stopped by a blow to the head. This didn’t stop the Growlers juggernaut and the game was never really in doubt: HKFC 12 - Growlers 22. The Nomads unfortunately did not fare as well against a very fit and drilled HKFC Dragons side, augmented by the ex-SCC talent Hairul Naim. A brave effort by the lads skipped by Jonty Kay, with some great play by the pack (Lewis, Rishi, Brian Varley among others) and backed up by backs Mark Ngo and Tim Brown but couldn’t quite break the Dragons’ Line. The Prems were last on. A mixed side, missing 8 of our starting line up with a healthy dose of Tankards 48

supporting (including yours truly), faced up against perhaps one of the best teams in Asia. The Prems, captained by Chris Harkins, started well. Kick off saw Ben Turner masterfully place the ball deep into Club’s 22, followed by a black and gold Tsunami piling into Club’s forward pack. The HKFC second row who caught the ball was levelled by new SCC flanker Luke MacBride and SCC regained possession. Phase play off 9 saw the HKFC pushed within 5 yards of their own try line, with the SCC forwards punching repeatedly into HKFC’s defence. But again, no gap in the defence could be found. The SCC didn’t give up, but with the match finishing HKFC 36 – SCC 3 (thanks to Ollie Rey), there’s a lot of room to improve next year. Meanwhile, back in Singapore, another Nomads team met Mitsubishi Corporation’s touring rugby team at Dempsey. With Ben Edwards captaining the side and Jon Leow as manager. It was a hard fought game with 40 of them, all in good shape, definitely younger and fitter were always going to be hard to stop. Many thanks to Mitsubishi for giving us an entire front row. The game was played in excellent spirits. We were 3 tries to 2 down with 20 minutes to play and it was only through some good work from the SCC forwards that it didn’t turn into a whitewash. We eventually went down 5 tries to 2. Some rampaging play from Big Ben Edwards as skipper, Valu punching holes out wide, as well as the new faces in the form of California Tyler, Aussie Josh and a great scything try by the visiting insurance salesman Dale in the centres.

A Sad Time…..
O
n the very sad news of the recent passing of a true gentleman of SCC “Mr Michael Grice”, I thought it would be a nice gesture for us to remember him through the eyes of former Soccer Section team mates and friends…..
SCC Ex-Internationals 1991 - Michael standing, fourth from the left
“A gentleman with no airs, he was a volunteer extraordinaire, spending countless hours at SCC, having his hand in every major sporting activity, from football, rugby, hockey, cricket and netball to tennis, squash and lawn bowls. He rose from the Club grassroots to become the newly-elected SCC President… RIP Michael Grice… friend and member of Soul of Singapore…” “I played alongside Mike for years, played against him in Interport Games when he was living in Malaysia and Indonesia! A true Sportsman through and through…RIP Mike …” “A true gentleman, an original true PAD and a great supporter of the PADS and the Soccer Section. He always had the time to share a drink, to see how we had fared on a Friday or any other time and I am so glad that we all made the effort to vote for him and show our respect and support as he so freely gave others…”
“Like many of the guys in the Section, I knew Mike for over 20 years. He, like many long-standing stalwarts of the SCC, is part of the fabric of this Club. We never really appreciate what Mike and his peers bring to the Club, unfortunately, until it’s all too late. I will always remember those dulcet tones echoing across the Padang during the 7’s and other International Tournaments. In fact, he was the voice of the Padang - that will always remain with me and many others…All that remains is for us to celebrate a life well lived” “Mike was one of the first people I met at the Club over 20 years ago. His character never changed. A decent bloke always up for a chat or a beer or more likely, both. I played PADS

He - along with Phil Cunningham - provided an educated & erudite commentary on countless sporting occasions at the Padang over the years. He was devoted to the Club & was a perfect ambassador in his role as he leaves many, many friends behind & the Club has lost a great servant… RIP Mike” “He and I have come a long way. He joined SCC in early 1970. I joined the Club and the Soccer Section early 1971. We both played 1st XI. He later went to his company in Jakarta, but he came back to Singapore after a few years. He and I then played for SCC Soccer Section and also in the Police Cup during the Rugby Season (Mike: front row 1st from left - and in 1991 for the SCC International Soccer 7s (Mike: back row fourth from the left) that was a long time ago. Mike and I were very close. We played soccer together; later on we consulted each other on almost anything, particularly Club matters. I enjoyed being around him. I felt very comfortable in his presence” “We lost a very good friend - RIP, Mike!” Personally I am saddened by Mike’s sudden passing as we all are, he was a true gentleman and friend to us all.

At publishing time, most of the matches in the preliminary rounds are still underway. ou might have seen a tall, muscular and blonde player on court with a bandana tied across his forehead like a sushi chef. That, my friends, is Soenke Langhoff – Captain of the Men’s A team. A native of Bad Neuenahr, near Bonn, Soenke has spent the last 10 years in Singapore. Dodging his powerful serves, we managed to squeeze in an interview with him off court.
teams and players always doubted how an “Ang Moh” could play for the Singapore Police Team. Before joining SCC, Neil Barrable who is also an SCC Tennis Member was my Tennis Doubles Partner for many tournaments. He told me how much fun it is to play tennis for SCC. So, here I am. It has been a great decision to join. 3. What is your most memorable match so far? Where do I start? In over 25 years of playing tennis, there has been many highlights. Some fun and some not so much, especially at the younger age e.g. me screaming at my mom as she was commenting on all my mistakes. She meant well by the way. She didn’t speak a lot, but in these tight match situations you can hear every little sound. A more exciting one I recall, was once being down 0:5 and 0:5, and still managed to win both sets. Also, I once returned the opponents serve with an overhead shot. We played on a clay court; his second serve bounced so high, that I just went to squat and hit an over-head winner. The most memorable was a bit towards the end of my “younger career days”. Unexpected, I made it to the finals of the Men Singles Rhineland Indoor Championship (M30). My girlfriend Anja (now wife) attended my match unexpectedly for the first time. I lost the finals, but won her. Probably her attendance made me nervous :). 4. To you, is tennis an art or a science? Tennis for me is an Art. Forehand, backhand, volley shot making is about drawing circles in the sky. The best picture wins.

1. How did you get that powerful serve of yours? Is it your built, the hours practicing in the sun, or Oktoberfest-related? During my younger days, I had a very good coach from Croatia who had a powerful serve himself although he wasn’t very tall. So it’s about the technique. In addition, it is training, training and again training. During our yearly pre-season tour, we held our training camps in Croatia. Every morning at 7am, I got up as one of the first and only player and practiced my serve while others were still sleeping. So, I was able to sharpen my serving skills over the years. 2. 5. Which player do you draw inspiration from? Roger Federer. His shot making repertoire is amazing and unique. He is agile and inventive in his shot selection and has the right shot for the right situation. He always has his poker face on and hardly sweats. How does he do it? Of course he is also getting older, but it is still fun to watch him when he wins. There have been a number of great players over time like Pistol Pete and Boom Boom Becker, but Fedex has it all. 6. If I weren’t playing tennis as a sport, I would .... be a pro kite surfer. 7. Tell me a bit about your tennis history? I started when I was about 11 years old. Opposite our house, we had a facility with 2 indoor tennis courts and my family became good friends with the Czech couple who was running the tennis center. Just the historic events around this Czech family who had to flee from their country would fill pages of stories. In addition, 14 clay courts were just within 5 minutes walk away from our house. So, when my parents built our house in this area, we all started with tennis. From then on, I literally spent a big amount of my free time on the tennis court.
