PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, First and foremost, I would like to convey my sincere thanks to all Members who had invaluably participated in the Clubs’ Annual General Meeting on 28 April 2016. It was arguably one of the most momentous in the Club’s recent history and I am most humbled and honoured to have been elected again as your President of this ‘Grand Dame’. The past term has been a difficult one. The unity of SCC in every aspect is paramount and I look forward to working closely with my fellow elected General Committee Members in the new term in benefit of our Club. Most importantly, I extend my appreciation to Capt. Baldev Singh, Mr Brian Teo, Mr Richard Stapley-Oh, Mr Parasuram Krishnan and GC Members Mr Dinakaran S. Appiah (Dino), Ms Cynthia Robless and Mr Teo Kwang Whee for their immeasurable contributions during their term of office.
Mohan Bhojwani President Singapore Cricket Club
The Club recently honoured its finest sporting talents at the 9th SCC Annual Sports Awards held on 15 April 2016. The convergence of our 13 Sports Sections in celebration of outstanding sporting achievements was a remarkable one and bore testament to the SCC team spirit. Similarly, team spirit was evident at the 22nd SCC International Hockey 6s tournament held last March. It was a rousing success with the participation of 64 teams from around the region. On behalf of the Club, I thank all teams, our kind sponsors, supporters and volunteers for making this edition an eventful one. In closing, my newly elected team and I look ahead to a fruitful term in office as well as your continued patronage of this fine establishment on the Padang. Let’s look ahead to a year of unity and camaraderie at SCC.

Farm to Table Shiraz 2013 Strathbogie Ranges, Victoria Australia
This wine is pale lemon in colour with aromas of stone fruit and melon. Full of fresh peach and honeydew melon, the palate is sprightly and smooth with great length of flavour. This wine was matured using new French Oak.
This Shiraz is deep red in colour with youthful purple hues. Rich aromas of ripe plum and dark cherry meld with chocolate and spiced vanilla notes. The palate is bright and juicy with red fruits and a smooth balanced finish.

The Humboldt 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon/ Cabernet Franc , Maipo Valley Chile
The Magellan 2010, Chardonnay/ Sauvignon Blanc Maipo Valley Chile
The classiest of the penguin species is the Humboldt with their elegant demeanor and gait. Like the bird, our Peng Wine Humboldt is a sophisticated and complex wine with a gorgeous purple hue and layer upon layer of rich aromas and flavours.
The Magellan is a crisp oasis in a sea of typical one-note, over-oaked Chardonnay. Magellan is processed in stainless rather than wood, creating a delicate and refreshing wine that can be enjoyed on its own or as a complement to a spectrum.

Adriano Langhe Sauvignon Blanc DOC 2014, Piedmont Italy
Giacomo Fenocchio Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2013, Piedmont Italy
A straw yellow with greenish reflections, soft and delicate, complex, inviting smell particularly for fresh fruits inkling. Dry and fresh, gently acidulous.
A deep ruby red colour with garnet reflections and an intense and fruity bouquet of plum and cherry. A dry flavour with good body, well-balanced tannins and harmonious with hints of liquorice, rose and gudron.
$49.00 per bottle | $11.00 per glass
$54.00 per bottle | $12.00 per glass Moet & Chandon Imperial Champagne NV
Laurent Perrier Cuvee Rose Champagne NV
An elegant colour of golden straw yellow with green highlights. A sparkling bouquet of vibrant intensity of green apple and citrus fruit and the freshness of mineral nuances and white flowers. A delicious sumptuousness of white-fleshed fruits (pear, peach, apple) with the soft vivacity of citrus fruit and nuances of gooseberry.
A basketful of small berry fruits: strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, redcurrants, morello and black cherries. The forthright, slightly sharp attack is like breathing the heady aromas of a freshly-picked basket of berry fruits - a symphony of aromas with a gentlyrounded, tender finish.

WAISALE SEREVI VISITS SCC
Ex-Fijian international rugby sevens legend, Waisale Serevi was at the SCC Padang on Wednesday, 6 April 2016 to conduct a fantastic coaching clinic hosted by the official broadcasters of the HSBC World Rugby Singapore Sevens, FOX Sports and Starhub, in collaboration with the SCC Rugby Academy. Approximately 70 enthusiastic youths from local schools including 30 from the SCC Rugby Academy participated in this event.
Although he played 15-a-side rugby throughout his sporting career, Serevi is most lauded for his achievements in rugby sevens and is widely considered as one of the greatest rugby sevens players of all time. Serevi last visited Singapore and the Padang in 2006. SCC is thrilled to host him again this year and to have him share his skills with our SCC Academy participants.

Melbourne Cricket Club Multi-Sports Visit
6 to 10 April 2016
After a long hiatus, the Melbourne Cricket Club and SCC finally got together for a Multi-Sports Visit with SCC playing host. The MCC Golf Section was the first contingent to arrive with seven enthusiastic golfers spearheading the event with a round of golf with the SCC at Seletar Country Club on 6 April. The inaugural Netball trophy match was played the next day. It was a tough match for SCC with MCC winning the game. A total of 87 guests from MCC were hosted to a welcome cocktail on Friday 8 April and an official dinner on 9 April 2016. Gifts were exchanged between both clubs and MCC was represented by their Club Manager, Mr Mark “Dos” Anderson. The Cricket, Hockey, Squash and Tennis Sections hosted their respective counterparts over the weekend of 9 and 10 April. A special mention must go out to the SCC Darts Section for inaugurating a social darts game with MCC. We hope to include Darts in the next Multi-Sports Visit.

22nd SCC International Hockey Sixes Tournament 5 & 6 March 2016 Article by: Mathavan Devadas Photo Credits: The Little Red Eye Pte Ltd
The SCC International Sixes continues to attract considerable interest and as with 2015, the 22nd edition of the competition saw 64 participating teams, 40 Men and 24 Ladies. Such was the desire to come to the event that we continued to receive enquiries up to a month before the event to be placed on the waiting list. This year saw several new Australian teams and a new team from the United Kingdom – the Adjutant General’s Corps. However even before the tournament started there was a casualty – Fremantle Black, who won the 2015 Men’s competition, declined the invitation as the dates clashed with a major club event. Nevertheless there were many teams happy to step in and fill the void.
The first day saw the matches going very much to form. SRC (last year’s Cup runners-up), Yokoe Japan, Hollandse Club and our very own SCC Jaguars won their respective leagues to go through to the Cup rounds of the Men’s competition. In the Ladies’ competition the Pink Ladies (defending Cup champions) and Cairns Sapphires (Australia) and both Padang Clubs won their leagues. However the Sixes has always been an all-round competition with an element of good social skills being very important. The theme this year was Samba Sixes, in keeping with the Rio 2016 Olympics. And teams did not disappoint with their outfits.
The competition started off with a bang on Saturday morning with four pitches starting simultaneously at 8am; some more enthusiastically than others! We were blessed with bright sunshine contrary to prevailing weather reports.
The Sixes dinner was once again held on Saturday. The teams very sportingly obliged with a variety of costumes to complement the Rio theme with several being real eye-catchers! The HKCC ladies and YWCC men especially were dazzling in their attire. The band, Wayne Sands and our DJ dished out retro and current chart toppers to entertain the crowd. Teams took to the dance floor as early as 8pm with

some unable to leave (for various reasons!) even after the DJ closed for the night at 2am. Many were still at the Courtyard of the Club enjoying the atmosphere and most of all spending money at the Club!
SCC started the game slow and allowed the Pink Ladies to score early through a penalty corner. However SCC then proceeded to dominate the game and forced five penalty corners in quick succession without success.
Party fever notwithstanding most of the players managed to drag themselves to the Padang on Sunday morning for the knock-out phase of the competition. Some teams were later than most causing the Eagles Nest to issue several final warnings over the public address system, which very often appeared to be falling on deaf ears.
The second half was another dominant display from SCC who kept the Pink Ladies pinned in their own half for long periods. However they were not able to convert the possession to goals. Then off a counter attack the Pink Ladies scored again and the game was over. A good win for the Pink Ladies, but a very valiant attempt by the SCC Flamingos.
This notwithstanding all matches did get underway on time. Of course the more fun-loving teams managed to secure an early release to the SCC bar. At times the said bar was so overrun with players that an official had to be placed there as traffic control. Another favourite retreat was the Sixes pool prompting the need for security and a life guard!
The Men’s Cup final was between SRC and the CH&FC. SRC was the losing finalists from 2015 and CH&FC was making their first appearance after a two year hiatus. And what a match! CH&FC took the lead early only for SRC to equalise very quickly after. SRC scored again to go into the half-time break leading 2-1. CH&FC hit back early in the second half to level the scores and then scored again very near the end to win 3-2.
In the main Cup competition matches, the home team SCC Jaguars made a sad early exit in the Men’s competition to a very good Colombo Hockey and Football Club (CH&FC), who were playing some very exciting hockey. In the Ladies’ competition, Pink Ladies, SRC, Cairns Sapphires and SCC Flamingos all made it through to the semi-finals of the Cup.
All in all a very enjoyable weekend for everyone and we look forward to 2017 with some considerable hope. A big thank you to our sponsors Asia Pacific Breweries for Tiger Beer, Science in Sport, Gryphon Hockey, Talenat and Springleaf Prata.
In the Bowl Final, Gymkhana Club (Sri Lanka) and Unfit Allstars (Australia) played an exciting match with the lead changing hands before Gymkhana emerged winners 4-3. The Ladies’ Plate final was another exciting affair going to a shoot-out before being won by ISCI. Our very own SCC Flamingos fought their way through to the final of the Ladies’ Cup after an exciting 2-1 shoot-out victory over Padang rivals SRC. There they faced the defending champions the Pink Ladies.

Balut in broad daylight
MARCH MADNESS Our regular Section Night featured lots of good fun, laughs and keen competition. It was well-attended, 36 players all up, each counting on Lady Luck to give them that elusive balut. Taking top spots were Anwar Gaffoor and Paul Chin with total scores of 683 and 667 respectively. Paul also scored 149 for the highest individual score in any one round.
A Saturday afternoon game turns out to be a hit with Members
IT WAS JUST ANOTHER FRIENDLY SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT THE GILMOUR Our monthly Section Nights have enjoyed such overwhelming enthusiasm that Members are now requesting for additional Saturday afternoon games on a regular basis. We tried it out for the first time on 9 April. Needless to say we had a healthy turnout of 35 baluteers. The dice rocked and rolled while tea time snacks added to the party mood. Top scorers included our guest from the Indian Association, Ernest Ayathurai with 679 points, Section Members Anwar Gaffoor (yet again!) and Margaret Cunico with scores of 670 and 654 respectively. What better way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon than with good friends while sharpening our game skills. Look out for more Saturday afternoon sessions, folks.

The Champion of the RPDYC Invitational Tournament
We had a great start to the year by winning a major tournament held by Royal Port Dickson Yacht Club (RPDYC). The Royal Port Dickson Yacht Club Snooker Invitation Tournament was held on 19 & 20 March 2016 and we were honoured to be invited to participate. A contingent of five players led by our Captain, Tan Bak Choon, drove up to Port Dickson on 18 March and were welcomed by the RPDYC members with chilled beers on a sunny Friday afternoon.
Our Contingent!
The tournament was very intense with competition against six other top teams in the Peninsula. The favourite was Penang Sports Club who breezed into the finals after beating Malacca Club in the semis.
Our new Member, Glen Yeo, played in the Singles against PSC’s top Singles player and made a few good breaks to end the frame swiftly. Jason Tan and Matthew Lim played Open Doubles and unfortunately lost the frame. The decider was played by our Captain, Tan Bak Choon as well as Victor Yeong. With good form from Victor and some Bak Choon “magic”, we won convincingly and emerged champions.
attractive F&B vouchers. Our dear Captain is planning to organise a new Ladder Tournament soon, so do get more practice at the tables to try to ascend the ladder. We have a few interport tournaments scheduled this year with visits to the two Bangkok and Penang clubs. Details will be announced, so do join us in these tours. Penang Sports Club will also be organising their large scale biannual tournament involving over more than 10 clubs across Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore in the later part of 2016. Royal Selangor Club has also confirmed the Six Red Invitational Tournament started by the Royal Bangkok Sports Club in 2015, to be held in June this year. On a sombre note, we’re deeply saddened by the passing of our former Member – Ng Thin Wah. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends grieving this immeasurable loss. Thin Wah, affectionately known as “Silver Fox”, passed away peacefully on 25 March 2016 and had served in various capacities in the Billiards & Snooker Committee. His great sense of humour and canny replies will be greatly missed. Come by, strike a few and have some whiskies. You may even get a chance to catch some live century breaks!
Drinks flowed endlessly and we were stuffed with food throughout the tournament. The host arranged a wonderful dinner and prize giving ceremony on Sunday evening. Kudos to the guys from RPYDC who devoted their time to arrange such a well-organised tournament! The National Snooker League also ended in early March 2016 after a good four months of matches played island-wide. Given that this was the first time we participated in the highest level league division, we achieved a good result ending up in the middle of the ranking table. It was a great effort from all the players who committed themselves tirelessly to play every week during the four-month period. Our in-house tournaments are currently being held, so do stay tuned and sign up for the upcoming tournaments to win some

BOWLS

The Green “The reinstatement of the bowling green project works has commenced and the completion of the works is estimated to be by end of March 2016.” Section Members will recall receiving this update on the Green in November last year. March 2016 has passed but the Green reinstatement works are still in progress and the Green has not been handed over to the Club. For quite some time now our Members have not played on what is remembered by some of the older Members as the ‘Grand Old Lady’. They have waited a long time and their patience and understanding has been truly exemplary. Thank you for your patience and understanding. They will be rewarded. There are, however, hopeful signs. The SCC appointed turf consultant has inspected the Green and the long wait may soon be over. A few things may still need to be done as can be expected in construction works. What is that about easier to build from scratch? Not always true, of course.
The text of the Franck libretto in Bach’s Cantata was flattering of the Duke as a wise ruler but did little to arrest the collapse of his duchy. We have reason to believe that all the work (and no small amount of money) which have gone into the reinstatement works will restore the Green and its surface to the original condition and former glory of the Grand Old Lady. See you on the Green soon! Meanwhile… Tanglin Club Green We cannot thank the Tanglin Club and its Committee and management teams working on both sides of a friendly divide enough for allowing us to ‘play a substitute’! It is not the most convenient, of course. We have to make arrangements for parking, F&B, changing room and perhaps a list of other arrangements but that is not at all unexpected. There is one thing though that needs little re-arrangement. We can play ‘friendlies’ each time we are there! There are one or two lessons to be learned. First, let us not take what we have for granted. Secondly, with the TC Green the long wait has become more tolerable. National Champion The 2016 National Singles Championships for Men’s and Women’s were concluded recently and the Women’s National Champion is SCC’s Virginia Longfellow. In the final played in scorching heat (was not there a health directive against this kind of exposure?) she defeated Tammy Loke by a ‘cool’ margin of 21-5.

Virginia Longfellow and Christian Huang Saturday morning, cricket match in progress, tennis clinic in session
A beautiful day but no bowls. Isnin our groundsman has cut the thick dense grass. He has rolled the Green. In the photo (above, left) he can be seen taking a break from removing as best as he can the creeping horizontal stems or runners that have invaded our Green. They are thick and they are strong. He calls them quite appropriately “kangkong”. There may be enough grass for sheep to graze now but there is reason to hope that these scenes in the photos will not recur. 40

score of 19 : 11 victory points. There are seven more rounds of play with two per month. The final round on 16 June will be hosted at SCC by the Bridge Section.
True to this, a Beginners Bridge Course was conducted in two parts. The first part consisting of a weekly session was conducted in late January and February. Of the 16 participants, eight have become Section Members, auguring well for the Section.
The Bridge Night on 28 March, being Easter Monday, was celebrated as a special event with desserts consisting of cakes and fruits. Prizes were awarded to the two best partnerships of the evening.
The second part consisting of weekly lessons was conducted in the last three weeks of March. There were 12 participants in this group. An intermediate-level training course is being planned for the month of May.
Training, social events and competitive play will continue to be the focus for the rest of the year.
The Chinese New Year event held this year on 22 February saw the biggest turnout so far with nine playing tables. Commonwealth Cup 2016 As the dust settled from yet another rousing Captain’s Cocktails, the Cricket Section set about its first order of business for the new 2016 season, The Commonwealth Cup (“TCC”) and the much anticipated return to our beloved Padang for the finals day fixtures. For the uninitiated, TCC is the annual intra-section competition where Members are split along nationality (and some other more loosely defined) lines to represent one of the four teams: The Hedgehogs (GB/Africa); The Jellyfish (ANZ); The Desi Boys (Indian Subcontinent) and the local, aptly named, Roti Pratas (Malaysia-Singapore) (Personally, I think it should be Roti Canai but that’s a debate for another day!). The real magic of TCC, which makes it a truly inclusive and outstanding Section event, is the age group criterion. Each team is required to field two U-20s, two 20-29s, two 30-39s, two 40-49s, two 50+ and above and one other from any of those categories. This results in each team comprising an unlikely and often times interesting collection of players from across the whole spectrum of abilities, inabilities and of course disabilities! For example we had the Captain of our 1st XI Riaz Hussien batting with senior pro, Life Member and Prata Mentor Suresh Prabhu TEAM

SCC and MCC golfers at the Seletar Country Club
We are glad to have gained more support from our Golf Section Members in the last few games and this has been very encouraging indeed. We held our Annual Golf Social Night on 22 March 2016 at the Gilmour Room. Golf Members enjoyed networking through the night and signing up for the various games and tours offered. Unfortunately due to low numbers we had to cancel our trip to Malaysia. After some encouraging arrangement with our Interport clubs, Kluang Country Club and Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur, the game will be postponed till later this year. The Golf Section hosted the Melbourne Cricket Club on 6 April at Seletar Country Club. Seven members from MCC joined the golf festivities over three days and golfers from both clubs had a fun-filled day followed by dinner. It was a good catch up session for both sides as they chatted through the games and dinner. The game ended with a friendly draw and SCC golfers are looking forward to the next tour which will bring the SCC golfers to Melbourne. For this year’s Sports Awards, the Golf Committee nominated Allan Muir for the ‘Spirit of the Sport’ award for the following reasons: • • • •

Girls NJL 2 Champions
Junior Girls Junior Champions Again Every year in the months of November and December, there is a frantic struggle at the SCC Hockey Section backroom to recruit new juniors for the season ahead. The start of the National Junior League is in the first week of January which leads to many logistical and administrative headaches. Nonetheless, like the last few years this year we managed to recruit some exciting new talent to boost both the boys and girls junior teams. 16 new girls joined us for this season and we embarked on a campaign to win the Girls NJL 2 title following our poor showing in NJL 1 last season. The opening game did not do the girls confidence any good as they drew 0-0 with a team that played without a goalkeeper. However there was deep believe within the team and not to mention resolve that they will do much better in the remaining games. Like magic the team transformed from Game 2 and never looked back. Winning all their remaining matches and taking the league title with a round of games to spare with 3-points ahead of the nearest rival, Buccaneers – St Andrews Junior College. All the girls in our SCC U19 squad are from Anglo-Chinese Junior College. This collaboration between ACJC and SCC is in its third

year and already two titles have been won with the girls and the boys claiming two bronzes as well in the same period. There were many players who stood out but Nabilah Eddy Razali and Captain Gabriella Teo were rocks in the heart of the SCC defence. Charmaine Tam and Mavis Tan were the defacto engine of the team’s attack that scored seven goals and conceded only once throughout the league. The pick of the lot was Charmaine’s solo effort to give SCC the lead in the final match of the season. Wynona Lim provided the main wide option in attack and she weighed in with the goals too scoring the second goal in the vital 2-0 win over CHIJ St Theresa’s Convent. Meanwhile the U-19 boys did extremely well boasting five new juniors joining the squad. The team needed the first game to gel and when they did, they won three of their remaining matches and were unfortunate to draw with eventual champions ACSOBA. They however finished third a mere three points behind them and an inferior goal difference meant they took the bronze instead of the silver. These exciting talents will now play some part in the ongoing National Leagues and attempt to bring more honour and glory to our Club.

Societe Generale SCC Growlers in Manila
Manila 10s 2016 Smarting from a somewhat controversial Grand Final loss to the Fijians last year, the mighty Societe Generale SCC Growlers arrived fit and ready to do battle at the International Manila 10s tournament. Most of the same team from the tournament’s 2014 winning side and the 2015 grand finalist side were involved and ready to win back the coveted Bull Trophy. This year’s tournament saw nearly 40 sides from around the world take part in a fiercely competitive tournament. The Growlers were pooled against eight of Asia’s leading veteran sides with several familiar faces in the opposition teams. A late start on the Saturday enabled the squad to practice hard and fine tune the now world famous Growlers moves – this paid dividends and we ran out comfortable winners against the Philippine Babas in the first round. The following game was a different matter against our old rivals, the Fiji Golden Oldies and they secured a narrow victory with a kick through try in the final seconds of the game. Because we are old(ish) and experienced we reorganised our tactics to incorporate a sweeper and we edged the Taipei Silverbacks two tries to one. Sunday and the quarter finals – an early night on Saturday proved decisive in our sharpness and we dispatched the Bangkok Bangers 36-0 to reach the semi-finals. There we played the sponsored Austen Morris Vets from Singapore who put up a huge battle requiring some epic scrummaging, traditional pickand-go and focused back play. Despite a physical and bruising encounter we won the game 17-10 which put us in the final against last year’s tournament winners, the Fijian Golden Oldies. There was much hype in the build-up to the repeat of the 2015 final with Singapore versus Fiji. The Grand Final was played under lights at the famous Nomad
sportsground with a very vocal and excited crowd encouraging both sides to win. The benefit of a bruising encounter in the semi-final ensured we were hardened to take on the natural and brutal force of the Fijians. The game was fast and dramatic for everyone involved, climaxing with Duncan McGilligan making an over 20 metre sprint to score what was the tournament’s winning try on the hooter. Final score SCC 10, Fiji 7. It is impossible here to mention all our players who gave everything but I should say that Oli Hall scored six tries over the weekend – greediness for which he was subsequently punished. As in previous years, we hosted the children from the Carrarroo Orphanage at the grounds on Saturday. Again all the players brought down loads of toys and clothing from Singapore to donate to the kids, all received with great appreciation. The kids from Carrarroo remain our inspiration and chief supporters of the Club – a wonderful bunch of children with smiles everywhere and they lined us onto the pitch. A special thank you to all the families connected to the Growlers and the Singapore Rugby Academy for their generous donations of money, clothing and toys again this year. So, victorious once again in Manila and preparation is required to retain the Mighty Bull in 2017!

SCC Lions in their new kit
Strollers Succeed at Home, Stumble on Tour The Soccer Section was back on tour in February. The Strollers headed to Thailand for the annual sevens tournament at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. A fine effort saw them unfortunate to lose the main event’s Plate quarter final in a closely-contested game with the eventual winners. Back home, congratulations are due however for reaching the Equatorial Cup final where at the point of writing, they will meet the league-leading British Club in April. The Strollers have five wins, two draws and five losses in the Equatorial Premiership League. The SCC Tigers finished their league season with 5-0 thrashing of Vikings and two weeks later lost the first game of their new campaign 5-2 against Barbarians. They faired far better in the ESPZEN Champions Cup game against Phoenix FC. 2-2 after 90 minutes, Yossi Azran sent an extra-time, 35-yard shot into the top corner, for a 3-2 final score.
The SCC Lions are unbeaten this year, with five wins and two draws, and as you can see from the photo, are well turned out these days in their personalised kit. It’s been a busy time for the Academy. The boys U9 (joint 4th), U13 (runners-up), and the girls U13 (runners-up) squads participated in the Curierzo International Tournament at the British International School, Phuket. Over the same weekend, the U16 boys were runners-up in the SEA Cup organised by ANZA Soccer at Turf City. The month was rounded off by Easter camps for boys and girls of all ages and abilities. Finally, our best wishes for the NFL’s 1st division campaign which started on 3 April.
The 1st XI only managed one game in February, but a draw was enough to put them in pole position for an eighth consecutive league title, despite a tough run in. Their 11 wins, two draws and three losses have been spurred on by top scorers John Spackman (10), Andrew Hutcheon (8) and Lorchan Little (5). The Padangtiques celebrated the 75th birthday of John Fernandez with a memorable banquet and an exceptional inhouse entertainment to honour a much-cherished Clubman. On 25 March, they also said a fond farewell to Pete Halliday who leaves for Switzerland. Both events kicked off with ‘Pads vs Pads’ matches on the Padang. All Pads players wish Captain Glyn Vince a speedy recovery from the broken arm he suffered during an away game with the SRC.

SQUASH

23rd Squash Triangular hosted by the Calcutta Racket Club, February 2016 Pythagoras had a theorem about triangulars and proved it with hypotenuses, sides and squares. These being Greek to me, ‘hypotenuse’ must mean ‘host’ and ‘sides’ therefore ‘visitors’! Popular vote for deciding the ‘square’? Anyway, well done, Pythagoras! Visionary. Your theorem lives on in the enduring Squash Triangular between the Calcutta Racket Club, the Madras Cricket Club and the Singapore Cricket Club which this year marked the 23rd edition of this premier club event. The ‘squares’ are clearly the sum of competitive squash and warm hospitality – exponential and spectacular as ever. Kolkata here SCC came ‘led’ by self-appointed ambassador Zoher Motiwalla (talking, dispensing, but playing bowls) and Peter Rogers. The supporting cast consisted of David ‘Boxer’ Palmer, alter egos Oliver Palmer and Anna, ‘Deuce’ Mao Shi Hui, ‘Amnesia’ Andrea, Jit, ‘Rover’ Rizal (no dogs), Bryden, Tim, Joannah and ‘Golf’ Glenn, and your scribe, the Jotter. Due to ambassadorial commitments, there was only modest lubrication on the flight presumably attributable to the burden of office and it was too late to address once we arrived at the Tollygunge.
doubles saw Calcutta peg it back. It was down to Mao and Tim in the deciding doubles which went to deuce in the third before an honourable loss. So close again, SCC proved to be excellent visitors securing third place but with two 3-4 losses. It does not get closer. Extracurricular was golf at the Tolly, shopping led by ‘Boxer’ Palmer and drawn tankards at the Bengal Club! As ever the hospitality was excellent. A ‘night club’ reception Friday night with all we could eat and drink and a fantastic spread on Saturday on the lawn outside the Calcutta Racket Club for the formal event under the floodlit St Paul’s Cathedral. It was here that it was discovered the trophy, won by SCC last time, was still in Singapore! Thank you Calcutta for being excellent hosts! Madras next year!

First round Friday was Calcutta versus Madras very convincingly won by Madras 5-2. The consequence of SCC not being involved in the first round was a day of ‘rest’ and two rounds on Saturday! The SCC tie against Madras went to the wire, Rizal and Tim both winning in three, Joannah losing, Jit and Bryden winning their doubles, Peter and David losing, and Shi Hui and Tim losing their doubles to 13 in the third. All on the vets singles which went to the wrong end of five and Madras winning 4-3, but so close. In the afternoon it was Calcutta versus SCC. Rizal was given a tough match eventually delivering, Tim came through, as did Joannah, but the vets singles and doubles and first regular

TENNIS LADIES AND GIRLS WIN THE INTERCLUB SINGLES A AND B LEAGUE The annual interclub singles league took place over the weekends from the start of March up till early April 2016. As usual, it was played on a home and away format with three Singles per tie. This time, SCC’s Men’s A, B, C and Ladies’ A and B teams hosted their games on our new synthetic grass courts. Given the number of games played, the new grass courts provided a consistent surface for play over the multiple weeks of gruelling match play. The Men’s teams played several challenging matches but it was the Ladies and Junior teams that ploughed their way through the matches and won all three games in the ‘A’ category and all seven games in the ‘B’ category – making them champions in both categories. Singles isn’t naturally our forte but with a good combination of experienced and youthful vigour, the ladies and juniors were able to overcome their opponents especially when the games went down to the wire. Of notable mention is the B team which consists mostly of juniors. They played week in, week out for five weeks against clubs such as SICC, Singapore Swimming Club, Weekend Warriors and the Pinoy Sports Club. Congratulations! More than just skills, the long season required the endurance and commitment of all players, men, women and juniors to ‘stay the course’ and see the Club through the matches. More than winning, the team work, coordination and commitment by the players and supporters (wives, husbands, mummies and daddies) who made this Singles league a successful one, in more ways than one.
DATES TO REMEMBER • 16 May to 5 June: French Open / Roland Garros • 27 June to 10 July: Wimbledon Player Focus: Rupika Pendyala 15 year old Rupika joined the SCC in 2015. She is part of the team that made its Singles debut last year and emerged runner-up. The team went one step further this year and won all seven matches to win the Champion title in B Singles league.
Rupika in her ‘lucky shirt’. Behind her, Nadine, Laura and Nilma
Innocent as she may look, Rupika has made a reputation for herself as one who chases down every ball and keeps her opponents running. In December, she spent several weeks training in Australia and credits that experience for improving her fitness and stamina. Somehow, in the recent Singles league, she has managed to find herself playing long three set matches but thanks to her calm demeanour and focus, walks off the court with the can of balls in her hand. Congratulations to Clare Cheng who won the U-14 Singles title in the March STA National Junior Tournament! Three sets, two hours and still smiling. Get ready for the back to back Grand Slam season – by playing at our Social Friday tennis The courts at the Club are booked every Friday for social tennis among Section Members. If you’re looking for a hit, come down to the courts any Friday. Every last Friday of the month, there is a ‘Makan Kecil’ (light bites) starting around 7pm, in addition to the social tennis. See you there!
So thank you to all who played, made themselves available to play, or supported the teams. Special mention of thanks to the following players: ‘A’ Team: Clare Fong, Sofia Antipatis, Joanna Flint, Sophie Mougel, Rehmat Johal and Nilma Missir-Boissac. ‘B’ Team: Rupika Pendyala, Nadine Loh, Natasha Loh, Laura Ann Chan, Clare Cheng and Katherine Motyka
