he 6th Singapore Cricket Club International Soccer Sixes will be held on 17 and 18 May 2014.

The Open Tournament has quickly become a premier playing field for the very best teams from around the Asia Pacific region to showcase their talent. It is an event that has had high profile professional teams from Australia, China, Malaysia, Thailand, and of course, Singapore, most notably the Newcastle Jets, South China FC, Chonburi FC and the Singapore National U23 squad – 2014 will be no different. In addition, the Masters Tournament has brought in high profile soccer stars in the recent years to grace the Padang such as Andrew Cole, Nigel Winterburn, and Ossie Ardiles. The 2014 event sees the superb ex-Arsenal legend, Ray

Parlour, return to the field and he will be accompanied by ex-Scotland and Manchester United star, Alan Brazil, of which both will be part of the CLA All-Star Team. Another integral part of the weekend is the Youth Tournament which will see youth institutions from around the Asian region participate in an 8-team competition. These youths will have a chance to be exposed to a great cultural and sporting experience, so watch out for the next generation of soccer favourites. The tournament promises to present quality players and will no doubt result in exciting matches at the Padang and for soccer fans in general. All these will not be possible without the support of our partners, sponsors and supporters who are vital to the success of our tournament. We look forward to seeing you all there!

CLUB NEWS

Dear Members,

First and foremost, let me say how humbled I am to have been elected to the post of President of our fine institution. Let me also say a big ‘thank you’ to all those Members that attended the recent Annual General Meeting and who showed such interest in our affairs and in Club matters. SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING A Special General Meeting (SGM) was held on 1 April to address three resolutions prior to the Annual General Meeting. Resolution (1), the increase of monthly subscriptions pursuant to Rules 45(b) and 45(c) was not carried by majority, whereas Resolution (2) pursuant to Rule 61 for ‘Proposed Amendments to the Rules’ and Resolution (3) pursuant to Rule 37(a), to incur expenditure not exceeding S$1.9 million for the purpose of redevelopment and/or renovation of the Club premises have both been carried by majority. FOCUS FOR 2014 Every year, our focus is on our Members, or should be, and everything we do or introduce should be actioned with a view to enhancing Member’s enjoyment of the Club and of our facilities. We do have, however, a wide range of membership with different interests so it is important to be cognizant of that. So one of the main focuses will be on Club Development and to implement the plans approved by Members at the SGM mentioned above. We hope to complete all work during this term (2014/15). There will be some inconvenience to Members during the implementation of our plans and we seek Member’s understanding.

A. Michael Grice President Singapore Cricket Club

Another important focus will be on the structure of our Club and the way in which it is run and managed. This is something that has been at the back of my mind for some considerable time now so I am of the opinion that a review is now in order. Whatever such a review may turn up in terms of our going forward, no changes will be made without first having a full dialogue with Members. Then there is the question of the Padang lease which is now 12 years away from the renewal. It is important, for long term planning purposes, to know what the future holds for us in this respect so it will also be a significant focus this year. STAFF PARTY The Club’s Annual Staff Party on 12 April held at the Conrad Centennial Hotel was a great success. I would like to thank all Members for their understanding in the early Club closure on this day to allow our valued staff to take a breather and enjoy their special day. We have some real talent amongst our staff as evidenced by the fabulous entertainment they provided on stage. Turn to pages 20 and 21 to read more. SPORTS On the sports front, the recent SCC International Hockey 6s Tournament was a resounding success and so many of you came to watch our teams compete. This major Club Tournament differs to the others we hold because there is a separate Ladies Competition which makes it unique alongside all the others we organise. Long may this be so. Moving ahead, in just a few weeks from now, the Club will proudly host the 6th SCC International Soccer 6s Tournament on the weekend of 17 and 18 May (Saturday and Sunday) at our magnificent Padang. I invite you to come and join and support our teams. In addition I would like to remind you of our Annual Sports Awards Night on Saturday, 9 May to honour and recognise those with great sporting achievement and those who have actively contributed to the Club and their respective Sports Section. This particular night is now a permanent fixture on our sporting calendar and an opportunity to recognise and salute our young (and sometimes not so young) sports stars SOCIAL EVENTS Please join us in celebration of all wonderful Mothers on 11 May for a special Mother’s Day Champagne Brunch at the Padang Restaurant. Another notable event on the horizon is My Sushi Box (a childrens’ workshop), as well as a Family Tour, promising fun for the whole family. Details are available on pages 28 to 32, so take a look and please come and join these activities. SCC NIGHT RACE FIESTA Vvvrrroommmm!! Don’t miss this years’ SCC Night Race Fiesta happening over the weekend of 19 to 21 September (Friday to Sunday). This is perhaps our most popular event which sells out quickly as there are limited tickets only which will be released on Thursday, 29 May 2014 at 10.00am. Make sure you mark this day in your calendar and contact us via our online booking system to purchase your 3-day or 1-day passes (available from Thursday, 5 June at 10.00am). All tickets will be available on a first-come-first-served basis at the SCC Night Race Fiesta website: www.sccnightrace.com. Turn to page 29 for more details. VISIT OUR CLUB Finally may I invite you to come and enjoy the Club for any of the social gatherings we are planning over the next few weeks both with your GC Members and with other fellow Members either to sample our food and beverage specials or, of course, support our various teams on our glorious Padang for whichever sport you enjoy most. The cricket and football seasons are in full swing now so there’s plenty of action to follow and refreshments close at hand! See you at the Club!

CLUB NEWS

Tribute to Mr Chelliah Tiruchelvarayan 28 October 1927 – 22 April 2014 ffectionately known amongst his dearest and nearest as Tiru A or T1, Mr. Chelliah Tiruchelvarayan passed away on 22 April 2014 and is survived by his loving family. The late Tiru was an active Life Member of the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) where he served with pride and passion for 46 fruitful years since 11 April 1968. Tiru joined the SCC during a time of great financial difficulty. Undeterred, he tirelessly championed the modernisation and rejuvenation of the Club to ensure its relevance amidst changing times. He also supported the project of air-conditioning the Main Lounge of the Club which eventually came to fruition. The beloved Tiru was later elected as a Member of the General Committee where he served with great purpose and vigour for eight glorious years. Tiru is fondly remembered for beginning his discourse at meetings with a clear and concise declaration of his name and membership number which would be met with cheers of approval. His opinions never went unheard. In fact, Tiru was once so aggrieved by the shrinking size of sotong (squid) balls that accompanied certain dishes that he promptly penned a letter to the General Committee explaining this gastronomical folly. This was reviewed by the Committee and the sotong (squid) balls in question were restored to normalcy, fit for consumption. Tiru remained an active Member of the Club after his formal service; always a familiar face at the Club’s Main Lounge or Men’s Bar where he would engage in orations about life and happenings at the SCC. Tiru was truly one in a million. Robin Tessensohn, a good friend of Tiru’s, fondly remembers his nomadic style of bar hopping. Tiru would always leave his glass of Scotch, Black Label no less, unfinished on the bar. He would have another drink in another bar, leave it unfinished and come back to the first one. Remarks Robin, “If it had been removed he would know at once and one of us or the barman would be blamed.” Tiru’s children and grandchildren were his ultimate pride and joy. A loving father and grandfather, Tiru could be seen at the Club doting on his grandchildren. A happy man, he contents with the knowledge that his children, having achieved in the academic arena, are now enjoying success in their chosen professions.

President of the SCC, Mr Anthony Michael Grice vividly recalls Tiru’s great claim to fame: “(During) every AGM he asked a question of the greatest insignificance to get members roaring with laughter on each occasion.” Tiru will sadly be missed by all who knew and loved him. Says Mr Rod Murchinson, “(he was) certainly one of the great characters of the club.” Brief Profile of Mr. Chelliah Tiruchelvarayan Tiru was born in Kuala Lumpur on 28th October 1927. He was educated in Singapore and graduated as a Qualified Quantity Surveyor in 1960 from the London University. He returned to Singapore and re-joined the then Public Works Department (PWD), commencing his career in 1949. He was then appointed Quantity Surveyor for projects undertaken by the Government. He also headed all MINDEF Construction Projects. He later became a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a Fellow of the Institute of Arbitrators of London and a Fellow of the Institute of Surveyors & Valuers of Singapore. In 1976, he was decorated with the Silver Medal for Public Administration by the late President of Singapore, Dr. Benjamin Sheares. Tiru was the former Patron and President of the Singapore Hockey Federation as well as a former Committee Member of the Ceylon Sports Club.

Obituaries The Club records, with deep regret, the passing of our Members: Our sincere condolences to the family of the departed.

Dr Frankland was particularly interested to return to the Club as he had been there previously in February 1942, when he was stationed in Singapore as a young captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. In the days before the Fall of Singapore to the Japanese, he treated injured soldiers and civilians at Victoria Memorial Hall (now Victoria Concert Hall), which had been converted into a temporary hospital.

Damage from a Japanese bombing raid in the Raffles Place area in early 1942. Note the clock tower of Victoria Memorial Hall in the background, then a temporary hospital where Dr Frankland worked. Photo: Argus Newspaper Collection of Photographs, State Library of Victoria.

Dr Frankland has a prodigious memory, and at the lunch he was able to recall events that occurred more than seven decades ago as if it were yesterday. On “Black Friday” — 13 February, two days before the surrender — he received verbal instructions to go to the SCC to do two things: — To destroy every bottle of gin and whisky in the SCC cellar to keep it out of Japanese hands (in Hong Kong, troops went on a rampage after getting drunk). He said the fumes were so heavy, he has never had a whisky since! — The other was to escort nurses from the Club who had been evacuated previously from Alexandra Military Hospital. He had to tell everyone to leave one of their two bags and walked with them to the harbour to board the evacuation ship, HMS Kuala. At the wharf, he came across deserters. The ship sailed eventually but as fate would have it, the next morning it was sunk by aerial bombing 130km south of Singapore with great loss of life. The first point is corroborated by a passage from the official history of the Club: “After the sinking of the British warships (the Prince of Wales and the Repulse), the two most shocking events for Cricket Club

“Many a barman or oenophile later had to supervise the smashing of his entire cellar, no doubt weeping all the while. Many others sneaked a few bottles off to hiding places for future use.” After the surrender of Dr. William Frankland Singapore to the Japanese, Dr Frankland was interned as a prisoner of war for three-anda-half years. He started at Changi Prison but was later transferred to Blakang Mati (Sentosa Island). Among his many fascinating prison experiences was the first Changi Prison rugby game between a winning team he captained and one led by the well-known Australian POW who later saved many lives on the ThaiBurma Railway, Edward “Weary” Dunlop. After the war, Dr Frankland returned to England and made a name for himself as an allergist. In the 1950s, he worked with Sir Alexander Fleming (the discoverer of penicillin who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945), and his patients included the late Saddam Hussein of Iraq. T

he Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) Annual Staff Party was held on Saturday, 12 April 2014 at the luxurious Conrad Centennial Singapore. Themed Casino Royale, the event promised to be a stylishly exhilarating one and indeed it was! The arrival of suave gentlemen and glamorous beauties of SCC set in motion an evening of excitement with many eager to try their luck at the ‘Casino’ and the ‘Roving 4D’ games. Their boisterous responses at the ‘Casino’ evoked the possibility of more adventure to come. Many also donned a fun variety of props while striking creative poses at the instant photo booth – photos which would certainly be cherished as fond memories of that evening. The event officially commenced with the energetic emcee introducing the opening item: a sweet serenade by one of our many hidden talents in the SCC family. This performance quickly went awry with the sudden intrusion of armed masked men - the jarring sounds of their machine guns piercing the air. SCC’s very own James Bond (Mr T. Ravi Chandran, Chairman of the Establishment Subcommittee) saunters into the room and saves the day with effortless panache. Order restored, the staff were promptly addressed by Mr Nigel Stearns, followed by Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh, General Manager and President of the SCC respectively. The 165-strong staff was lauded for their diligence and commitment towards service excellence. They were also encouraged to venture forth in pursuit of progression. Awards were ceremoniously presented to three overall Service Champions and 24 recipients of the Long Service Award ranging from five to thirty-five years of dedicated service. The recognition of staff that evening bore testament to the familial warmth of SCC.

The party rapidly kicked into high gear with thrilling games that elicited squeals of excitement and roars of laughter. The ice-breaker games whet a ravenous appetite in all, and, with high spirits abound, staff proceeded to savour the sumptuous international buffet spread with many returning for seconds. The exuberant emcee conducted more stage games. The highlight of the event was the highly entertaining ‘The X-FACTOR’ contest featuring staff performances that had everyone clapping and cheering wildly. The talented trio of groups delivered high-octane performances that likely made for tough judging. The winning performance of ‘The X-FACTOR’ was delivered by team ‘Desperado’ earning the coveted prize of S$500 cash; the other teams also walked away with cash prizes. Everyone had dressed to the nines but a couple of lucky individuals were presented the Best Dressed Award for their impeccable style. Winners were aplenty that evening with 33 staff winning attractive prizes in the Lucky Draw segment of the event. Congratulations to Muhammad Razi who won the top prize of S$1,688 cash. The evening ended on a groovy note as the lights dimmed and the dance floor filled with gyrating bodies. The SCC Staff Party was a rousing success. Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh thanked the SCC Staff Party 2014 Organising Committee for “a very well organised and entertaining Staff Party.” Mr Michael Grice, Deputy President of the SCC, and all present also congratulated the Committee for a job well done! Echoed Mr Nigel Stearns: “very many thanks indeed for a GREAT PARTY on Saturday night – a splendid job from all concerned on the Organising Committee!”

Wines of the Month May / June 2014

Domino De Plata Crios Torrontes 2013 Enticing aromas that are strikingly similar to Viognier, with hints of white pear, white flowers and citrus fruits. Plenty of body for a wine that shows such delicate aromas and flavours. Fruity, floral and yet still quite dry.

Lion’s Lair Shiraz

Opulent, bright fruit. A beautifully elegant palate with round tannins, layered with clove spice, ripe cherries and violets. $45.00 per bottle | $10.00 per glass

$56.00 per bottle | $12.00 per glass

Domino De Plata by Susana Balbo Malbec 2012 Beautiful deep violet colour with exploding aromas of blackberry, black cherry and blueberries framed by hints of spices and mint. This is a ripe and rich style of wine with long velvety finish.

Lion’s Lair Chenic Blanc Refined and racy. A flinty wine that is redolent of green apple, granadilla and guava. Good minerality leads to a fresh finish. $45.00 per bottle | $10.00 per glass

$68.00 per bottle | $14.00 per glass

GERARD BERTRAND Reserve Speciale Viognier

GERARD BERTRAND Reserve Speciale Syrah

This 100 % Viognier is a pale yellow colour with a pale green hue and an intense bouquet of white flowers (acacias, hyacinth, orange tree flowers). Rich and lush with aromas of tropical fruits, dried apricots, hazelnuts and honey are rich and lush with a crisp and lively finish.

This wine offers a lovely garnet-red colour with violet tints. The bouquet releases aromas of pepper, mild spices, truffles and fruits such as cassis, blackberry and violets. Ample and rounded on the palate, this Cuvée boasts smooth tannins and flavors of spices and wild herbs, ending on a pleasingly long mineral note.

JUNIOR SPORTS MEMBERS Netball Section

Bright Vision Charity Street Netball Journey

Scribe: Nanthini Visvalingam | Convenor: Kerry Jane Brown

T

he JSM initiative was a bid to fill the club void or “black hole” of the missing age group of 26-35 year olds. The Netball Section has since taken a 2 pronged approach to this.

- JSM recruitment through schools (targeting the 13-17 year olds) and - General recruitment drive through existing member of similar age group. The JSM recruitment through schools was carried out firstly with the execution of a JSM-run SCC schools carnival; the first of its kind in the Section/Club history. The carnival saw the participation of about 7 schools - all of which were qualifiers for the national rounds at the school tournaments. The carnival was a huge success going from 8am all the way till 4pm on a Saturday and the feedback we received was highly positive. We look forward to running this carnival again this year. Besides the carnival, existing members/JSMs recruitment of friends and schoolmates saw the number of new JSMs reach 14 in the last quarter of 2013. In the 1st quarter of 2014, we had a new addition, Ellie, to the JSM family of the Section as well as welcoming back to the team, Jini. The JSMs took to the court with additional training to further strengthen individual and team skills.

JSMs running our 1st SCC Schools Carnival at the SCC

With this very strong crop of JSMs, a JSM team was entered to compete in the Year end Katana league - a league run by Katana netball club. The team was entered into division 4 (Division 3 National league standard) as we were a new entry with no history in the netball scene. The team emerged champions. A very good start to the JSM foundation of the Section. Half of the team also participated in a charity street netball tournament in September - the Bright Vision Hospital Charity Street Netball Tournament, doing relatively well placing overall 3rd in the opens category, defeated by another team consisting of 3 other JSMs from the section. Overall a good representation by the SCC Netball Section. The JSMs are also particularly active in weekend tournaments & carnivals. The most recent competition the section was involved in was the Changi CSC Street Netball Challenge. 2 teams comprising 10 members, 8 of which were JSMs, took the courts bright and early at 8am on a Sunday morning. Both teams advanced into the quarterfinals and led by 1 goal midway through – unfortunately inclement weather forced the remainder of the match along with the finals series to be cancelled. All top 8 teams were declared equal winners. We are looking to continually build a sustainable JSM squad and if you would like to join us, or know anyone who would, please feel free to drop us a message or pop by and have a go at a training session. The Section trains Wednesday evenings 6.30pm-9.00pm.

20TH SCC INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY 6S TOURNAMENT Scribe: Lorna Campbell

Swinging Sixties at the Hockey Sixes

Y

eh Baby! The 60 teams who took part in the 20th SCC International Hockey Sixes had their ‘mojos’ in full throttle as the sun shone brightly (perhaps too much for those who forgot to apply their SPF!) on the 1st and 2nd March on the Padang. We welcomed 40 men’s and 20 women’s teams from around the world – Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and a host of strong contenders from Singapore. Following the customary drinks reception on Friday night in the Gilmour Room (and then onto Boat Quay for a few more!), the action got underway early on Saturday morning with the pool matches

throwing up some surprise results and spectacular action for all those that had come along to spectate and support the home sides. SCC once again fielded four teams, two in each competition who battled hard on day one to play themselves into contention for the top spots. The SCC Supremes (Women) and SCC Steppenwolves (Men) had an impressive start with four wins from four to progress into the Cup Competition while the SCC Crystals (Women) faced some tough opposition to finish the group stages with two draws and two losses to move into Plate as did the SCC Rolling Stones who picked up one draw from their four matches.

SPORTS

So the swinging continued into the evening as the party went back in time to the 60s. A fantastic range of costumes came out to play including flares wider than goal post, interesting facial hair additions and a host of ‘shagadelic-psychedelic’ colours like never before. It looked like several parents’ wardrobes and charity shops over in OZ were raided for the occasion! The teams shimmied back onto the pitches for Sunday’s knockout rounds and it sadly didn’t take long for one of our ‘Gold and Black’ Members to bow out. The SCC Supremes lost out 1-0 to Cairns Sapphires in their first match. Next to say goodbye were the SCC Rolling Stones who faltered at the Plate Quarter finals against Japan’s Okawa.

SCC Crystals advanced to the Plate semi-finals but lost on penalties to local rivals Tornadoes. And so it was left to the SCC Steppenwolves to carry the torch for the club. They eased into the semi-finals of the Cup before meeting their match against our neighbours SRC – who went on to lift the Cup. Congratulations to all those triumphant teams over the weekend and thanks to all the rest for providing extremely tough opposition to keep the standard of this tournament at its very best. The standard of socialising remains as high as ever too! A HUGE thank you goes to the committee for all your hard work and dedication to making this event such a success. Without you, this would never happen and the section, and all those who attended are very grateful for your efforts.

A balut on 5’s by Yasmin

The Section’s tour to The Kinabalu Club, on 7-8 March was a great success, with the President, Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh and the Deputy President A first throw by Ravinder. Beautiful symmetry. Michael Grice both in the party; which they both enjoyed immensely; especially the President who was invited by Datuk George Bandusena, President of Golf Sabah to a game on Sunday. Our next tour is scheduled for the 23-24 August at The Sarawak Club. On Saturday 12 April, 25 baluteers gathered at the lovely old colonial mansion, on Mount Faber, which is now the Danish Seamen’s Church for a gorgeous lunch followed by 6 rounds of balut, the winner being Andreas Justensen, with a score of 670. (111.66), with Else Stokkmo taking the 2nd prize.

Yasmin being congratulated by Eileen & the Convenor

In May, the Section’s AGM is on Tuesday 6 May and on the 9 May is the Annual Sports Award Night. Wednesday, 21 May is our 1st league match of the 2014 season, to be hosted by the Singapore Recreation Club. We have just received an Invitation to Tour for the weekend of 22-23 August from the Sarawak Club. The Section has accepted this kind invite. Details will in due course be sent to all SCC’s baluteers. Indications are that this intended tour will be even more popular than the one to Kota Kinabalu. He is the only player of the modern era who scored more than one 1000 points in tournament break. Do come to the Snooker Room and catch a game with the World Champion!

In-house Russian Tournament was won by Matthew Lim, who beat Victor in the highly contested final. On another note, we are honoured to announce that Mr Peter Gilchrist joined the Singapore Cricket Club and is also a Member of Billiards and Snooker Section. A Splash of RED!

Bowls Begins with a Blast Opening Carnival 8 Feb The bowling year began with a splash as some 30 odd bowlers and spouses, all decked out in RED, gathered at the Green for a friendly game followed by a splendid dinner and drinks and the traditional toss of lo-hei in the courtyard under the stars. The GC’s George Abraham & Cynthia Robless presented awards to Mary, Ron & Menon, our winners in the mixed triples; Josephine Lim and Mike Daryanani for “best dressed” and Anwar taking away a bottle of Red in the “spider” event.

in first with TQ Lim Ist runner-up followed by George Abraham. In the Ladies (“round robin”) Lew Foong came in first followed by Josephine in 2nd place, and finally, Ganesh ran away with the Plate. Most recently, in the Lion City Cup Lawn Bowls Championship 2014 in March, our National Squad of SCC Bowlers Mary Lim, Shermeen, Christian Singles Champion Melvin & runner up T.Q. Lim and Melvin won the Plate.

Robina Rebels 22 Feb The Section was kept busy thereafter. The Robina Rebels from Queensland visited us briefly for a friendly game and were hosted to dinner in the courtyard by our bowlers. It was a close match and SCC won 2 Rinks, drew 1 and lost 1 and Chai, Velu and Anwar led the winning SCC team. Bowls Events In the Bowls Singapore National Singles in February, our JSM Shermeen Lim did us proud yet again, coming in first in the Ladies Section and Christian Huang 1st Runner-up in the Men’s. Looking Ahead

A

fter heralding the year of the Horse with a sumptuous dinner for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, free flow of wine and a friendly game on 13th February 2014 at the Gilmour Room, the Bridge Section Members have many activities to look forward to.

To begin with, beginner’s classes have been planned for four successive Tuesdays starting 8th April from 7pm to 9.30pm at the Oval, with a view to attracting new Members and for existing Members to further hone their skills. An overseas trip to Royal Selangor Club in Malaysia is in the pipeline and contacts are being made to ascertain the possibility of organizing a social event with them.

Bridge Training

The Inter-club friendly with Geylang West Bridge Club was held on 7th April 2014 and there were around 9 - 10 tables for this event. Tasty finger food and delectable wine were served too. Last but not least, there will be the customary Easter Special Event to be held on 24th April 2014 which will be featured in the next issue. So far, it has been a busy start to 2014 for the Members! arylebone Cricket Club Visit MCC made their first visit to Singapore in over 10 years and we were delighted to host them on the Padang against our 1st XI. The match itself was a run-fest with over 600 runs being scored, SCC falling narrowly short of MCC’s total.

MCC and SCC players

MCC brought a squad of 13 players and all were keen to play on the Padang, having described this match as the highlight of their tour to Malaysia and Singapore. They made a special request to play a 12-a-side match, with 11 players batting and fielding at any one time, which was agreed by SCC skipper Rob Hands. MCC decided to ‘lend’ us Ed Kilbee, a decision they almost chose to regret. Ed, nephew of SCC stalwart, Chris and cousin of James, scored 117 in 93 balls including an incredible 10 sixes. Rob Hands added a well-paced 76 in a 188 run partnership with Ed, which gave us a great chance of reaching MCC’s total, but was not quite sufficient in the end. For MCC, Jonathan McLean, Ireland international Reinhardt Strydom and ex-Lancashire captain, Mark Chilton all performed with the bat and Harry Horsley picked up 4 wickets. Strydom, for his 74 runs and economical spell of 0-36 in 10 overs, was awarded man of the match for MCC.

Scores - MCC 307 for 5 in 50 overs (Jonathan McLean 79, Reinhardt Strydom 74, Mark Chilton 68 not out; Chris Janik 2 for 38). SCC 299 for 8 in 50 overs (Ed Kilbee 117, Rob Hands 76: Harry Horsley 4 for 49). MCC won by 8 runs. In the evening, we hosted the MCC touring squad at the Padang restaurant. SCC President, Colonel Gurcharan Singh, Deputy President Michael Grice, Chariman Games Control Board, Baljit Singh and other Members of the General Committee were present. In his speech on behalf of the MCC, Robert Griffiths QC, a member of the main committee, described the SCC as one of the best cricket clubs in the world and said that he was keen to develop an even closer relationship between the two clubs. The evening went extremely well and needless to say carried on in Stumps until the small hours.

Royal Bangkok Sports Club Our first interport of the year was against our old friends from the RBSC. We played two matches against them – a 40 over match on Saturday and a 30 over match on Sunday, winning one and losing one. The 40 over match resulted in a comfortable win, with Matt Ward making a half century on his interport debut, supported by Andre De Lange and skipper, Riaz Hussein. RBSC were never close in the chase despite a hard-hit 75 from Manish. In the Sunday match we fell comfortably short of a 202 run chase, and this would have been even more, without a fluent half-century SCA League Update (Until 6 April) The 2014 league season only kicked-off in late February, and some teams have only played one or two matches, so it is a little early to gauge the season’s prospects. Having said that, both Lions and Cougars have made promising starts in division 1 and 2, winning 3 out of 4 and 4 out of 5 matches, respectively. There have already been several outstanding team and individual performances and the season is shaping up nicely. These include: • Jaguars’ successfully chasing 260 runs in 30 overs, for the loss of only 4 wickets. This incredible chase was based around two partnerships of 91 in 52 balls, between Ben Gliddon and Dustin Yates, and then 96 in 47 balls by Dustin and skipper Sukanti Sen.

from Rupert Jakes. Manish completed a good weekend for RBSC with another fifty. Scores : SCC 262 for 8 in 40 overs (Matt Ward 54, Andre De Lange 51, Riaz Hussein 46). RBSC 169 all out in 39 overs (Manish 75; Nick Power 3/23, Krishna Prasad 2/32). SCC won by 93 runs. RBSC 202 for 7 in 30 overs (Manish 56 ret; Chris Thomson 3/26). SCC 163 for 6 in 30 overs (Rupert Jakes 52 ret) RBSC won by 39 runs. • Cougars’ 41 run over ANZA, having looked in great trouble at one stage. This was made possible by Pete Muruthi’s 82 in 67 balls and Quentin Sear’s 6 for 49, during a fine display of leg-spin bowling.

Quentin Sear after his 6-49 vs ANZA

• Lions’ 2 wicket win over MUCC having lost 4 wickets relatively cheaply. Pete Muruthi continued his fine form with a battling 77 not out, and was supported by Chris Janik’s fluent 40.

• Nick Dorney (103) recording the first hundred of the season in a comfortable win over SPA.

• Dene Border’s 106 not out leading Cougars to victory over SRC, having been chasing 190 in a rain reduced 30 overs.

• Brigu Iyer’s first 5 wicket haul for Cougars against Singapore Pakistan Association. His aggressive spell of fast bowling was impressive for anyone, let alone someone who hasn’t yet turned 15 !

• Lions successfully chasing 272 against SRC with 7 wickets and 21 balls to spare, made possible by an unbroken 158 run partnership between Andre De Lange (131 not out) and Chris Janik (69 not out) in only 130 balls. Chris continued his good form this season, hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes. Andre, already batting with stitches from a split webbing in his left hand the previous week, was struck on his right thumb on the first ball, and batted heroically through the rest of the innings with a possible fracture.

Commonwealth Cup The SCC cricket season kicked off again this year with the Commonwealth Cup, a 4 team intra-section tournament amongst 4 teams drawn from the geographical regions of Singapore and Malaysia (Roti Pratas), the SubContinent (Desi Boys), Europe and Africa (Hedgehogs) and Oceania (Jellyfish). The competition brings together all section members, fro the JSMs right through to the Lions. Following a first weekend of 4 games, the Roti Pratas and Desi Boys both put the Hedgehogs and Jellyfish to the sword. The second weekend saw the Rotis overcome the Desi Boys and the Hedgehogs beat the Jellyfish to set up rematches the following weekend for the Cup and the wooden spoon.

Pete Murray. Bowling honours for the Hedgehogs were shared between Nick Taylor with 4-25 and Matt Streeton with 4-55.

In the Wooden Spoon game, the Hedgehogs amassed 7-236, led by Marty Seabright with 36 n.o. and Stuart Brown with 38 n.o. , with Phil Simmons taking 3-25. In reply, the Hedgehogs were all out for 194, despite 75 from Nick Dorney and 32 from

The Competition was a great way to kick off the season. All games were played in great spirit and thanks must go to the respective Team Managers and Captains for their contributions in organising a very successful competition.

A closely contested final saw the Roti Pratas beat the Desi Boys to remain undefeated in the competition. Batting first, the Rotis were all out for 174 with Chris Janik making 38 n.o. and Shan Pervaiz scoring 28. The wickets were shared amongst the Desi Boys with Nikil Naredi returning the best figures of 2-19. The chase was a good one and at 6-148, the Desis were well in the hunt. However, the pressure told and they then collapsed to be all out for 153. Chris Janik returned the best figures with 2-32 whilst there were 3 run outs.

he Lunar New Year galloped in with the promise of good health, good luck and prosperity for all. The Darts Section marked the Year of the Horse by organizing its first Darts Night on 28 January 2014. There was a very good turn out of Section Members to usher in the festivities. Almost all the female Members turned up in varied shades of red keeping true to the Dress Code. Nothing brings us together as sports and good food and the Members were lucky to have both at an arms length. The evening started with the tossing of the traditional lo-hei -tossing high and hoping it would bring in good health and fortune. This was followed by a sumptuous Chinese dinner and the drinks always help in keeping the focus. A friendly game of Darts was organized and everyone got a chance to play. At the end of the game, two winners were announced, one male and female respectively. The Darts Section has been very active in the past and has equally good plans for the future, it would be nice to see more Club Members come join us and enjoy the game of Darts and the fellowship too.

Junior Talent Adds a New Layer of Success

T

he year ended on a high with the Annual Hockey Dinner which was themed in ‘Black and White’ and filled with style, class and plenty of jovial behaviour (the giant cheque-funnel and marshmallows providing plenty post-dinner entertainment). It is only right that we reflect on our stand-out performers for 2013 and worthy winners of the now legendary ‘Golden Balls’. The past few months have ramped up a level for the Hockey Section as the season has begun and the social fun continues. The young members of our Section are flourishing and deserve special attention in this edition… Congratulations to the SCC U19 Girls who were crowned champions of the SHF U19 Tournament in February. Our boys didn’t disappoint either and walked away with a bronze medal for all their hard work. A big thank you must go to Dawn De Foe, Ting Hou and Kanan for all their hard work to support the teams and help them achieve this success. It’s a very promising sign for the senior teams in the years to come. The older players ran their socks off at the first section social of the year in February. Pauline and Sean organised a fun-filled afternoon with a round robin tournament that adopted the indoor hockey rules (well most of them) on the outdoor hard court at SCC. The men and women mixed into five teams to play some fast and frantic hockey with some players stepping up to the unfamiliar job of goal-keeper and impressing us all.

U19 boys in

And so to the serious stuff…..the leagues have officially begun as of March and teams are battling hard to get an early footing at the top of the tables. Kanan and Bakri must feel like they live at Sengkang at the moment as the yellow and black strips cover the pitches over the weekend. At the time of writing….the women’s teams have had mixed results with the 1st XI and 2nd XI holding two wins and a loss, and the 3rd XI picking up their first win against Theresians in their third league match. For the men, both the 1st and 2nd XIs are playing in the premier league and are expecting some tough battles. The 1st XI opened their campaign with a win over the 2nd XI then a hard- fought 3-3 draw against the Dutch Club. The 2nd XI are hunting out their first win at present and the 3rd XI are fighting hard in division two. For the 4th and 5th teams, their leagues begin at the end of July so are getting into their game rhythm with the Hockey Liga pre-season League. Next up for the men is a tour to Jakarta. Two teams are travel ling for the 9-a-side tournament on from 23-35 May. Good luck to all teams this season – we’re all aiming for some silverware this season to bring back to the trophy cabinet!

It was the Yellow team that topped the table, followed by the Oranges in second and Red team in third. Congratulations to Geer Langezaal for picking up the ‘Female Player of the Tournament Award and James McCraith for receiving the ‘Male Player of the tournament’ award – both being presented with a well deserved bottle of wine which were likely shared around in the much-needed cool down pool. The fun and frolics continued at the International Hockey 6s. Check out the special four-page spread to relive the action.

ound 1: The Eagles had a very impressive first round of the league in division 3, getting off to a strong start in their first game, beating the somewhat aptly named ‘Blunderbirds’ by an impressive 50 goals to 2. They continued in the same vein, taking out Bedok White 43-24, by a small margin of 35-33 and NZCC Moa by 47-22. Emerging undefeated, the Eagles were then promoted to the second division in the second round of the tournament. The Hawks, who played the first round in division 1, did not have quite as smooth a time. The ladies unfortunately lost the first game to Bedok Blue 51-20, won their second game against the SR Prems 47-20 and were beaten again in their third game by Fier Orcas 57-15. Both having two losses and just one win on their belt, the Hawks’ final match against NZCC Kea would decide who would be relegated from the first division. The match was a tough one, with both sides going 100% until the final whistle, but the Hawks managed to walk away with a victory and keep their place in division 1 with a final score of 45-33.

was substantially higher than in division 3, and after a tough fight ended up losing 29-39 to Bedok Purple. The Hawks also found that their first match, against the SR Prems, was a challenging one. Having beaten them easily in the first division, and beginning the match with a series of goals, the Hawks felt that they had the game in hand (to the extent they decided to be the ‘bigger people’ and give away a disputed goal). Unfortunately a number of blunders in the middle two quarters meant that the game was essentially tied, and the game was only decided in the last seconds – luckily the Hawks were a goal ahead as the whistle blew. The Falcons began the second half of the mixed league with success – beating Bedok Green 41-30. A reminder that the Netball Section are always looking for new players. A Great Season

CC finished the SRU regular season on a high with the Lions and Growlers finishing up 1st and 2nd in the Conference and the Tankards winning both the league Championship and the knockout Plate Final. The Lions’ end-of-season score sheet showed their sheer dominance of the division, winning an outstanding 10 from 10 games, gaining bonus points in all, and amassing an incredible 336pts for and only 20pts against. This result pays true testament to the commitment to training and teamwork shown by the Lions’ players and coach during the season. Congratulations to Elliot, Matt and the players on their outstanding season. The Growlers came in a very close 2nd to the Lions, with 9 wins from 10 games and amassing a similar score sheet of 348pts for and 99pts against. Not content with their taking 2nd place, the Growlers departed to Manila to wreak havoc in the Manila 10’s. They finished the first day 2nd in their pool behind the hosting Extinct Volcano’s and faced a hard side of the draw on the Sunday. With carbo loading from the night before fuelling their engines, they easily won the quarter final to reach a Semi. The Tankards, led by Big Sam Sharp, were more than up for the challenge, running out winner 25-10 to claim the Plate. Congratulations to Sam, Mark, Damien and the players on their outstanding season. L

et’s reflect back on the Lions Team for 2013... The SCC Lions are jointly run by Sheldon Lee, Lee Terk Yang and Tony Moore.

At the recent annual dinner - Foo was top scorer, Bruce Loggie was the Player of the Year and John Keh was the Players’ Player of the Year. The Goal of the season was won by Tony Moore.

The highlights of our season are the two Cup games against German All Stars for the Henrik Lorenz Trophy and against Indian Association during the Soccer Fiesta. In 2013 we won both games and are focused on retaining these for 2014.

Upcoming Events The SCC Soccer Sixes will take place on the 17th and 18th May 2014 at the Padang. This will involve several well known British teams and lift the profile of the tournament in Asia.

The team in terms of age - has many similarities to the Pads & Thirds - with the difference really being we have several players in the window of 25-40 years old who make a massive difference when they are available. The core of the squad is based on ex First teamers (Steve Webster, Doug Wills, Arjen Flierman, Bruce Loggie, Tony Moore, Lenny Ong) and ex NFL stalwarts (Sheldon, Jason Foo, Ray Lim) with an influx of newer (not always younger) players such as Nick Hughes, Ben Davies, Andrew Talbot, Francois Dotta, Stuart Tunbridge. The longest serving players are Marcus Davies & Mike Hogan (nice to see you back mate) plus the likes of Maitrii, Godwin Campos, Kai Friedrich, Nasir Kauser, Nick Barrett, Rob Gulston & Terk. We usually play Cosmo second strings and Equatorial League teams with a few local sides and generally win as many as we lose! The Lions in Action

riangular Tour 7-9 March On Thursday 6 March, 10 Members of the SCC Squash Section flew to Chennai to participate in the 20th Triangular Tournament involving the Madras Cricket Club and Calcutta Rackets Club. The touring parties stayed at the Madras Cricket Club. Having not won the past 14 years, Madras was keen to have their name on the trophy. Their team line-up included lady players Joshna Chinappa and Deepika Palikall ranked 20th and 7th in the world respectively. MCC also fielded India’s number 2 ranked male player so both SCC and CRC had their work cut out from the start. It did not help that with many of our top juniors currently studying overseas and our top senior players unavailable, SCC was not able to offer much of a challenge as we summarily lost both our matches. With their comprehensive win over CRC, MCC finally had their name on the trophy. The trophy presentation was held at the Cricketers Room at MCC on Saturday night where the teams exchanged T-Shirts and MCC Club President Mr Ajit Kumbhat presented the trophy to MCC Captain, Rajiv Reddy. MCC extended superb hospitality throughout the weekend starting with a welcome dinner and Lungi dance night on Friday evening at Park Pod. Following the trophy presentation, everyone was invited to join the Club Party at the MCC Pavilion and Yorker Bar where we danced the night away.

Family Day 8 March Our second Family Day was held on Saturday, 8th March with 16 children ranging from 4 years to 12 years participating. There were varying levels of squash skills and experience but all the kids were enthusiastic and had a lot of fun. The day was run by Vivian Rhamanan & Marcus Yeap from SquashPro International and they came armed with short rackets, spongy balls, patience and a sense of humour. After a warm up led by Frances Gomez on the multipurpose courts, they split the kids into two groups depending on age. Hitting a ball is no easy feat when you’re little and the racket is as big as you but we did see potential there. It was good to see parents bringing their kids along to get a taste of the game that we love and that has brought us to SCC. For many of us our love of a sport came about because we followed our parents when they played their sport. It is a great thing if we as parents or grandparents, can introduce a sport to our children, get them to play and enjoy and then a whole world is opened up to them. We hope that some of these children will continue with squash and we are hoping to encourage that by offering a coaching programme for young kids to be run by SquashPro. Details of the programme will be publicised shortly. Many thanks to Anna Trybocka for organizing, Mahes for doing the F&B and other Section Members for their support.

On Sunday, MCC organised a trip to one of the Member’s Beach House where the teams were treated to a wonderful view of the Bay of Bengal over lunch and were given surfing lessons in the afternoon. A most unique and fun day we will all remember. The Force behind the Family Day - Mahes, Anna & Frances

E

xciting news for the Tennis Courts (by Kevin Cumbers) Having lobbied the previous four GC Committees to change the surface of the courts, the present GC have very graciously agreed to the Tennis Section’s request. At this point of writing, we are reviewing the proposals and quotations to replace the grass courts with artificial grass. The work is expected to begin shortly and will take around four to five weeks to complete. The reasoning behind the decision is very clear, while the grass looks nice it has been deteriorating over the years. Despite efforts to rejuvenate the grass and the surface several times, the courts have been unplayable on many occasions. As a result, it was shut for a total of three months last year for maintenance. This would only increase over time and we have had expert opinion that it would be very costly and time consuming to maintain the grass and with no certainty that it would work.

2014 Singles League The season kicked off to a good start with the Men’s A, B, C and Ladies’ A participating in the singles league tournament. This year was particularly challenging given that it was one of the hottest and driest months in many years, and the starting time of these matches (9am on Sundays and 2pm on Saturdays), meant only the toughest will survive! Armed with a few new key players, the teams took to the courts and battled against numerous clubs, home and away. The Ladies’ A team ended the tournament winning two matches - against the Singapore Recreation Club and the Swiss Club, but narrowly lost to the Japanese Sanwa team and SICC.

Another option had to be sought. Artificial grass is the obvious choice as from the club house it will look like grass so from a visual point, there will be no change. From a play and upkeep point it is a win-win for everyone. The surface requires minimal maintenance and would be open for 12 months of the year. It dries very quickly so play will be disrupted less even in the event of rain. The surface provides a regular and predictable bounce which will help players of all standards. It is one of the most forgiving surface for the body so the older Members, myself included, should see and feel the benefits. Once the surface is laid it will take around 3 months of play for the courts to be at their best. This time will shorten the more play they get, so I encourage everyone once the courts have been laid, to get out and play! Recent ST A open sing

During a (long) changeover, we caught up with her and asked her about her tennis adventures. 1. When did you start playing tennis? Tennis was in the family, both my grandparents and my mother played regularly so I picked up a racquet around 10 years old. My grandparents played on grass tennis courts, usually a home court on a dairy farm around the countryside in the Waikato region of New Zealand. After our family moved to Auckland I joined a local club and represented Auckland in the Top 10 Juniors but I have always enjoyed the more social side of the game. Lucky for me I found a husband who loves tennis too so I hope we can still be playing as well as some of the older members at SCC when we reach retirement. Both our daughters play too so we have many family challenges when we are all together at home in New Zealand, the losers get to do the dishes! 2. Tell us about your tennis adventures! Our adventure has taken us to Europe, Asia and the Middle East since we left New Zealand 15 years ago. We have found that tennis is an easy way to meet new people and have made some wonderful friends from all over the globe. We have had some interesting experiences along the way. In England we had to try out before being invited to join the club! We had also never played with so many outer layers of clothing for protection from the cold. A highlight there was winning tickets to Wimbledon, we were pinching ourselves as we ate strawberries and sipped Champagne before taking our seats at Centre Court to watch Agassi amongst others. In Switzerland we played on clay tennis courts for the first time in our lives during the summer months and an indoor carpet surface during the winter months. We lived 52

3. Tell us about the social tennis scene at SCC? With our daughters leaving Singapore to return home to University we were keen to make some new friends in the tennis section and found that unless you were playing in the weekend league there were not many opportunities to do so. With more time on my hands I decided it would be fun to get involved and see what I could do to encourage more social tennis. It is encouraging to see new members turning up on Friday night, some of them for the first time. The monthly ladies social mornings are gathering momentum too, the scones are a major attraction after the tennis for any ladies interested in joining us. 4. What’s your most memorable event at the Club so far? The Fun Cardio session with Coach Lucas on a Friday night mid-March was super. It makes you realise how important the footwork is when playing tennis and although Lucas worked us hard the music helped you forget the pain and push harder! The session was tailored to all levels so you could work at your own pace. I think we also provided some free entertainment for those dining at the Oval that evening as some of us lacked rhythm to say the least, no names mentioned Eric!
