A Country full of invaluable treasure

Greece awaits you to come and discover its beauties. “I arrived at the old port quite late in the evening. Waking up the following morning by the sun streaming through my window, I got up to gaze out at the deep blue sea … breathtaking! This was magic indeed! These are the images still deeply embedded in my mind … Noon and the delicious oven baked “pastitsio” has just come out of the oven … I wanted nothing more! This was it! I was pleasantly trapped in its magic… Enchanted indeed! Greece, a country full of invaluable treasure. Who said that it’s a poor country? On the contrary, its wealth is unlimited; wherever you travel in this country, you can only expect to see amazing images, hear unbelievable stories, taste excellent Mediterranean cuisine, walk along endless beaches – an integral part of its natural wealth.

A brilliant culture with global radiance and impact which was created thousands of years ago and has left its mark, never to fade no matter how many years go by. Ancient sites, cities, walls, temples, shrines and markets. Ancient theatres, stadiums and alters all waiting for you to discover and admire them from your personal viewpoint. In his walks, the visitor to this small but beautiful country comes across picturesque islands, traditional villages and unique cities. If one claimed that the act of “Τouring” was born in Greece – that would indeed not be an overstatement. The clear sky, the fertile land and sapphire-blue sea all blend together to form the Greek horizon. The deep blue ocean engulfs its islands and the mainland bridging its multiple islands and coast, minimizing distance and making sea routes safer and ever so pleasant.

Greece is certainly a destination worth discovering Elena Agyrides

Greece... a country full of invaluable treasures

introduction to Greece

Greece a unique destination Search through the luggage of anyone leaving Athens International Airport and you will undoubtedly find a stone, a tiny jar with sand, something to remind them of their visit to the land of the gods. Most importantly though, you will find the Grecian sun in their hearts. That is the impact Greece has on its visitors!

The temples and monuments – built thousands of years ago in honor of some god or another still stand proud and never cease to be the subject of admiration of all that visit them. Their dominance is symbolic too of the strength and the unity of the Greek people themselves.

From a very young age at school, children are taught history and it is the Greek history that really stays with them; mythology, the majestic Olympus where the gods reside, the sun – burning forever - warming the hearts of a most hospitable nation, the sapphire-blue sea and its endless beaches – pebbled, rocky, sandy, crowded, secluded – something to cater to all tastes.

Greece is the country where the sun shines three-hundred and sixty days in a year. How then could its people not be blessed with warmth and a friendly, outgoing character? Visitors to Athens are fascinated by the ongoing nightlife and entertainment in general.

The islands of Greece – rocks randomly thrown into the Mediterranean Sea by Poseidon himself – adorn the country, luring its many visitors to come and get a taste of something unique, an experience not encountered anywhere else on the planet.

Greece – not a country to be visited just once

Whether it is the traditional bouzoukia or the countless clubs and cafeterias one visits, one thing is certain – they know how to have fun and put all troubles behind them. They will deal with their issues when the sun comes up again, marking a hopeful future, an optimistic outlook and they know that one thing nobody can take away from them is their charisma – their love of life and living it to the fullest. By taking along some sand or a stone or anything which ultimately reminds them of their visit to Greece, is like a pact, a promise to come back again. Greece is definitely not a country to visit just once in a lifetime – it draws you back again and again. The magic is there and in abundance and is ready to embrace everyone wishing to visit it, to explore it and to thoroughly enjoy it. www.travelling.gr

Attica

Attica is a place worth getting to know It is the place where democracy, philosophy, literature and poetry along with other arts were born. It is the very place Athens, the birthplace of culture flourished. The prefecture of Attica is the most densely populated prefecture of Greece. Athens is its capital city while Piraeus, is where the largest port in Greece is located. Geographically, the Attica Prefecture is divided into two major subsections, the capital region and the rest of Attica. The capital region includes both the city of Attica and Piraeus and is bound by the Saronic Gulf and the mountains of Parnitha, Ymitos and Penteli, thus defining the Attica Basin. The rest of Attica covers most of the Attica Region. Moreover, Attica was the birthplace of the most important Greek city states such as Athens, Elefsina and Megara.

Greece... 12 a country full of invaluable treasures

Athens – The City Of Light The Athens of today has spread throughout Attica, starting from Elefsina, where the goddess Dimitra taught the cultivation of wheat to its people, thus defining the term ‘culture’, down to the plane of Thriasio, Skaramanga, Perama and Egaleo. It spreads on to Parnitha, Kifissia and Ekali. From Ymito Mountain, it goes down to the Mesogia, Spata and Liosia, but also towards Vari and Vouliagmeni. From Penteli and Dioniso it goes on to Rafina, Nea Makri and all the way to Marathona. All the above have been connected to Piraeus. The historical centre of Athens is easily accessible to everyone who wishes to visit Syntagma Square, the Anafiotika, Thision, Avissinias Square and to also Psiri for some ouzo or to head on to Ano Petralona for an aromatic cup of coffee. A visit to Klathmonos Square and Evripidou near Syntagma is also a must. Furthermore, one is mesmerized by the beautifully litup Acropolis at night.

Attica

Athens, according to an article in “Zeit Magazine”, is the new Berlin. Foreign artists are now regularly visiting Athens, choosing the city for their exhibitions and various events, or even as their permanent place of residence. And of course Athens is a true paradise for cultural tourism, a large journey into history and art. Educational excursions, theatrical productions, festivals, pilgrimages, visits to archaeological sites, monuments and museums, excursions to study the natural environment, folk art and culture – these are just a few of the many things that Greece has to offer in the cultural tourism sector. Traces of a centuries-old and important history is etched in every corner of Greek land: findings from the Prehistoric and Archaic Periods, unique works from Classical, Hellenistic, Medi-

eval and Byzantine monuments, creations from folk art cultures, traces from the passing eons of other civilizations and different religions, that coexist with current creations, constructions and modern works of art. Whoever really wants to understand Greece, its history and its people, he will find an unrivaled cultural experience by traveling into the area and chronological period of Greek culture. The City of Piraeus Piraeus – known from ancient times as the port of Athens - was the port which together with Elefsina and Megara played a significant role in trade in ancient Greek history. It always supported Athens and the Athenians always had a soft spot for the city of Piraeus.

Today, Piraeus is one of the largest cruise ship ports of the country and of Europe. It was Themistocles who initially discovered the importance of the port of Piraeus for Athens. The result of which was for Athens to become the head of nautical power, having Piraeus as its port at a time when the army had a close relationship with naval power. In the Marine Museum of Piraeus, the nautical history of Greece unfolds before the eyes of the visitor. During the summer, the sea bewitches you. The countless beaches of Attica – small, large, sandy, pebbled, rocky, shallow, deep, isolated or cosmopolitan. One can find organized beaches in the middle of nowhere with easy or sometimes difficult access to them, some known and some unknown. www.travelling.gr

Attica

Athens – the birthplace of culture

Greece... 16 a country full of invaluable treasures

The Historical Centre of Athens easily accessible to everyone Moreover, there are calm, secluded beaches while there are others with frothy waves inviting you to dive into the clear blue water. If it so happens and you’re ‘stranded’ on a beach when evening comes, do stay and dine and enjoy an amazing evening at one of the taverns practically and literally on the beach. Stay till the morning and have the time of your life. Diving in Attica is an extraordinary experience. Shipwrecks and reefs, caves rich in sea-life constitute the Attica seabed. Eastern Attica Attica and more specifically, Eastern Attica is the ideal place to visit in order to enjoy a high-quality vacation with an exceptional number of choices for alternative tourism. It is no wonder that the South Coast of Attica is often referred to as the Athenian Riviera. Many places where our traditional artwork is produced and our cultural character is made prominent, are visited by tourists from abroad, thus enhancing the financial status of the local communities. www.travelling.gr

Attica

Greece... 18 a country full of invaluable treasures

Thorikou – the most ancient in all of Greece and the many caves and mines of Lavrio. The Archaeological site of Vravrona where the Temple of Artemidos stands, the Temple of Apollonos Zostiros in Vouliagmeni and last but not least the Archaeological Museum of Marathon which is a jewel amongst jewels. The Eastern Attica beaches stretch all along the coastline and there is surely one to please even the most demanding visitor. There are also many places to visit and go hiking, bird-watching and fishing, the choices are endless. There are plans to enhance the areas of touristic interest and the projection of the area’s cultural treasures and gastronomic pleasures. An example of some plans underway are “The Wine Route” and “The Mining and Caving Route”. A better understanding into the riches of wine making will be made along with the production or cultivation of other basic products of the area like: oil, honey, vegetables, stock-breeding and the fishing industry. As for “The Mining and Caving Route”, it is a part of the “unknown Attica”, the riches below the surface of the earth, the minerals found in the mines of Lavrion, Rafina and Grammatiko, and the marble found in Penteli, are surely of immense importance and of interest to many. The many wineries of the area hold an interest of their own; there are over 70 wineries which together produce about 70.000 hectoliters of wine.

Eastern Attica – an all-yearround destination

In our effort to find relevant information to write about Attica and give our readers a better insight of the area and issues concerning it, we spoke to Mr. Petros Filippou, the Regional Vice Governor of East Att ica and asked him to tell us about the places which are of interest to our visitors from abroad. Every effort is being made in order to gradually and methodically do what is best for the district and resolve all issues in the best possible way, said Mr. Filippou. Priorities and goals have been set in the areas of upgrading the touristic product by organizing events which bring out the historical, environmental, cultural and productive wealth of Attica. Moreover, emphasis is being given to the fact that Attica is an all-year-round destination offering the visitor a multitude of things to do and see. Another goal set, is to enhance and develop the areas of agriculture, stock breeding, fishing and honey farming; all able to boost not only the local community but also the nation as a whole. The area of Eastern Attica is where Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport is located, two main ports – Rafina and Lavrio ports which connect the mainland to Evia and many of the Aegean Islands. One cannot ignore the fact that the area is also exceptionally rich in historical interest sites. To mention but a few of these amazing and most significant sights, there is the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion – the southernmost tip of Attica, The Theatre of

Attica Vineyards stretch to over 49.500 acres with a variety of grapes being grown in its rich and fertile soil. There are plans to have organized tours of the wineries and have wine-tasting events. The visitors will be able to get an insight into the whole production process. Another plan on the table and under discussion in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Sports, is of a Diving Park. Divers will be able to visit six different areas of great archaeological interest – an “Underwater Museum” with 26 shipwrecks to be explored. This will certainly put our country on the global list of diving tourism. However, two major issues which need to be seen to as soon as possible are, that the local produce should obtain a strong international identity – in other words, all products grown or produced locally should have a brand identity name. Another issue is the fact that there are not enough hotel rooms to accommodate visitors to Eastern Attica. For the further development of its tourism, more hotel units and consequently, rooms are to be built in the area. The development of the primary and secondary sector in Eastern Attica is progressing with the younger generation returning to the basic fields as is agriculture, grape cultivation and wine making. Some, work in olive groves picking olives for oil, others work on honey farms – collecting honey and caring for the hives while others are involved in stock-breeding. Some prefer the secondary sector of wineries – producing and bottling the wine, olive

oil production and bottling; some of these companies are even exporting their product abroad and doing very well indeed in it. The development of both the primary and the secondary sectors are of vital importance in the enhancement of the nation’s economic situation. Needless to say, it is also part of our cultural heritage and importance should be given to it. The development of agrotourism in Eastern Attica, through activities concerning agriculture and our cultural environment, our traditional cuisine and local gastronomy along with hospitality and restaurants or traditional taverns will be given priority as it is vital we keep its heart ticking. Finally, it goes without saying that Attica and especially Eastern Attica has all that is required to host and entertain its visitors. Having an abundance and a variety of things for everyone to see and do, coupled with an excellent climate and access to a most natural environment. The local cuisine which is closely related to the world renowned and respected Mediterranean Diet and its exquisite archaeological sites and temples, festivities and cultural events along with so many other activities to enjoy, is surely enticing enough and reason for everyone to consider Attica for their destination. Every effort is being made in order to project Eastern Attica internationally and make it known as the destination worth visiting all year round.

Attica

Eastern Attica – exceptionally rich in historical sites

Greece... 20 a country full of invaluable treasures

Attica Western Attica It is part of the region of Attica. The capital of the regional unit is the town of Elefsina. The regional unit covers the western part of the agglomeration of Athens, and the area to its west. Elefsina resembles a palimpsest manuscript. The history engraved on it, repeated layers of writing, composing in the centuries run a long and enchanting novel. Flourishing settlements, fortifications and spaces of religious worship were developed in this place during antiquity but also in modern times. This historical period is easily interpreted because of the favorable location of the town; a vital point from where main road arteries pass and connect Attica to the rest of Greece. At the same time, its harbour secured from the winds in a closed gulf, constitutes an exit of marine communication and a node of transit trade. To these factors the fact of disposal of fertile, cultivable land at Thriasio Pedio, should be added. The Eleusinian river Kifissos, nowadays called Sarantapotamos, crossed this important granary of Attica. The city of Elefsina, was built around the sanctuary and temple of Dimitra, the goddess of agriculture, dates back to the Mycenaean era. During the classical period, the city was the site of the Eleusian Festival when thousands of pilgrims walked the sacred way from the Acropolis to be indoctrinated into the ancient mysteries. To divulge the secret of the Eleusinian Mysteries was punishable by death and for 1400 years these secrets were known only to the initiates. The site was the second most important in ancient Greece, after Delphi. Elefsina The selection panel of independent experts responsible for assessing the Greek cities competing to be European Capital of Culture in 2021 has recommended that Elefsina should be awarded the title. Three cities had been short-listed after the initial pre-selection round in February 2016: Elefsina, Kalamata and Rhodes. Commenced in 1985 on the initiative of the then Greek Minister of Culture Melina Mercouri, European Capitals of Culture have become one of the most ambitious cultural projects in Europe and turn into one of the best recognized-- as well as most appreciated-- activities of the European Union. The initial inspiration of the project is more relevant than ever before. It is to provide Europeans with a possibility to learn more about each other’s cultures, in order to participate in intercultural dialogue and to appreciate their shared history as well as values: to put it simply, to experience the sense of belonging to the same European community. Throughout the years, the European Capitals of Culture have expanded in scope and size, contributing to the cultural, social and economic development of numerous cities and their neighboring regions throughout Europe. Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner in charge of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, said: “In 2021, Greece will host its fourth European Capital of Culture after Athens in 1985, Thessaloniki in 1997 and Patras in 2006. Many cities competed for the title, with 14 initial contenders narrowed down to three finalists. This shows once again how popular this

Attica EU initiative is with cities and citizens. I congratulate Elefsina on its successful bid. I look forward to seeing Elefsina give visitors from Europe and all over the world the opportunity to discover the city and its cultural assets but also to appreciate the diversity of cultures in the European Union as well as our shared values-- this is today more vital than ever. As many previous European Capitals of Culture have shown, the title can bring significant long-term cultural, as well as economic and social benefits-- benefits that Elefsina now stands to reap as well.” The town Eleusis or Elefsina, a town with a population of 30,000 inhabitants and is located 20 km from the city of Athens. The town is known for its ancient and contemporary industrial history. In ancient times it was considered to be, for nearly 2000 years (eg 1600-400 AD), one of the five holy cities, where the Eleusinian Mysteries attracted for many years pilgrims from throughout the known world. Thanks to the great tragic poet Aeschylus, Eleusis gets even more famous in the ancient world as well as in our days. After 14 centuries of ambiguity in 1827, and the liberation from the Turkish occupation, Eleusis appears as a small town of 250 inhabitants. In the 1860s Eleusis started to change its urban profile with the construction of new buildings and the installation of a number of small crafting industries. During the 1880s, the industrial development was started with the foundation of a soap factory (CHARILAOU -1875), the cement industry TITAN (1902), distilleries BOTRYS (1906) and Kronos (1922). In 1922, 2000 refugees were installed in Elefsina, duplicating its population. After the 2nd World War hundreds of workers from all over Greece came to Elefsina in order to work in the industries of the region. Throughout the 21st century Eleusis is developed into a modern town which gets rid of the characteristics of a glorious past. It becomes the administrative center of the broader area and is the headquarters of the Prefecture of Western Attica. The Archaeological Site and its Museum constitute areas of international promotion and tourist destination. The Festival “Aeschylia”, the cultural events organized by the Municipality each autumn, is nowadays an institution that gives the possibility of expression of modern cultural matters of the town. Alongside with the economic development, the ongoing efforts for infrastructural improvement and protective environmental measures, efforts are made from the side of public authorities, private associations and individuals, for rehabilitation of the spiritual character of the town, so as to be worthy of the heritage that bears the name “Eleusis”.

Attica Transition to Euphoria The program includes 5 key events that link the natural flow of time to the evolution of Europe and the European Union. Year 2021 marks the 200th anniversary of the Hellenic Revolution, which led to the establishment of the modern Greek state. Revolutions are times of transformation and transition. Eleusis and Europe touch on the two great transitions that radically transformed human living conditions and created new forms of organization and co-existence: the Agricultural and the Industrial Revolution. Today, both are faced with the challenge of a new transition, the need to redefine concepts such as development, social cohesion and, eventually, prosperity. The role of art and culture in this process is decisive, precisely because that is the function of the artist: to dress fantasy with shape and form, to transubstantiate possibility, to operate beyond the obvious. Art opens new roads and offers new prospects for the future. Inspired by the figure of Persephone, the transition and alternation of the seasons, the program includes 5 key events that link the natural flow of time to the evolution of Europe and the European Union. The Key Events are: Opening Ceremony (January 2021), Closing Ceremony-Winter Solstice (21 December 2021), May 2021 (Connection of Europe Day and the arrival of Persephone and spring), June 2021 (Connection of European Development Days and European Day of Music with the Equinox, the arrival of summer and fruition), September 2021 (Connection of European Heritage Days and the end of summer, the beginning of autumn and the Equinox). Using the myth of Persephone as a metaphor, the key events focus on the transformations of Europe and its societies.

The mainland is so full of riches and exciting destinations

For those who think of Greece as only a wonderful summer destination because of its spectacular beaches … think again! Read on and you will be amazed at the choices at hand. Then again, you may just want to visit some excellent archaeological sites, ancient monasteries or just take a relaxing drive around the country. Whatever you are up to, Greece is where you want to be! Together, we will take a drive starting from Athens, the capital, and take the national road going north. We’ll go through Thebes, a region known through the legend of Oedipus. It now prides itself to have a most fertile land where crops of cotton, potatoes and tobacco flourish. Greece... 26 a country full of invaluable treasures

The mainland Levadia, the busy capital of Boeotia, is our next destination as it is where the hot springs (piges), can be found. They are called Lethe and Mnemosyne or otherwise, Oblivion and Remembrance. Today we can still see the old stone arch bridge which was build during the Ottoman Empire. Further north, we come to the monastery of Osios Loukas – its Byzantine architecture is awe-inspiring and worth a visit. It’s impossible to drive through and not stop at the ancient site of Delphi! A visit to the Sanctuary of the goddess Athena and the temple of Apollo. Delphi was also believed to have been the centre of the universe in ancient times and still holds a magic of its own. Some say that they can feel the magnetic powers of the area there. All you need to do, is go and experience it for yourself. The Delphi Museum is also one of the places you should not refrain from visiting; people from all over visit it in order to take in all its glorious history. Going much farther up, we come to Epirus – Ioannina, Metsovo and the Meteora mountains. Sit by any one of the traditional taverns at the lake of Ioannina and enjoy their homemade pies or if you are into rafting – that’s where you want to be! Metsovo is yet another most picturesque village which cascades down a mountain at 3.300 feet above sea level. Metsovo cheese is something to taste and take home with you along with memories of an outstanding place. Meteora, which actually means “hanging in mid-air”, is breathtaking! The monasteries perched up on these rocks seem to be doing just that – hanging in mid-air! The mainland of Greece is so full of riches and exciting destinations that no matter how much I may write or talk about it, it is never enough. A visit during any time of the year, be it summer, fall, winter or spring, guarantees that the visitor leaves with luggage, not only filled with clothes but with unbelievable memories – enough to think about and smile during a very, very long life.

Delphi The Municipality of Delphi at the heart of Greece According to Greek mythology, Zeus, the king of the gods in ancient Greece, sent two eagles from the ends of the universe. Where they would meet it would be the centre of the world. The birds flew and met at Delphi. Since then, Delphi has been marked the “Navel” (Omphalos) not only of ancient Greece, but also of the ancient world. The Municipality of Delphi is Geographically placed in the heart of Greece, in the Prefecture of Central Greece. Driving on a road of almost 100 Km along the coastline of the Municipality of Delphi, the visitor is on the meetng point of the two elements that best describe Greece. The sea water, with the intended seashores, the capes, the little bays, is harmoniously combined with the mythical mountains with the beautiful peaks and gorges. It is a region with the famous archaeological Site of Delphi, which is characterised by UNESCO as a “World Heritage”. With the impressive “Delphic Landscape” dominated by the silvery-green Olive Grove of Amfissa and with the modern sea node of Itea as well as the noble nautical town of Galaxidi which is often described as “an island on the land”. A region surrounded by the mountains of Ghiona, Ete, Parnassos, and Vardoussia, (all regions of the “Natura 2000” network), which are of high ecological value with scattered picturesque villages rich in history and tradition. The tourist face of the Municipality of Delphi The Municipality of Delphi is a newly born municipality, formed after recent administrative changes and it includes the areas of the former municipalities of: Amfissa, Delphi, Desfina, Galaxidi, Itea, Gravia, Parnassos, Kalleaes. As a tourist destination, the Municipality of Delphi offers a plethora of tourist options. It includes cities and regions with tourist resources, which offer a variety of tourist products in the field of specal interest tourism, www.travelling.gr 27

Itea’s contribution to the Greek Independence War was crucial; it is the place where the Naval battle of “Agkali” (1827) took place, when Hastings, a passionate philellen, head of a small Greek naval force, defeated the Ottomans. This victory restored the sovereignty of the Greeks in the Corinthian gulf and ensured the communication with Peloponnese. The historic village of Gravia Gravia was populated after the Greek Revolution of 1821 on the surroundings of the renowned “Inn (Chani) of Gravia”. There, on May of 1821, Odysseus Androutsos, with 120 lads courageously destroyed the hordes of Turks of Omer Vrini, stopping their march to Salona and their later invasion to Moria. Cyclades Islands

Ios Kea Mykonos

Think of Greek islands and immediately the picture of windmills and white-washed square houses with blue doors and shutters come to mind. All the islands of the Cyclades group bear a beauty and a character of their own. It depends on where one wishes to go first and which ones to add to their bucket list, for surely once you’ve visited one, you will inevitably want to visit them all.

Ios

A great ambassador of this unique setting is most definitely the island of Ios. It is the island for the young and young at heart. This bustling island which has become synonymous to an endless party for the young and not so young, has so much to offer. Of course, its beaches are absolutely amazing with Mylopotas and Manganari standing out for their fine sand and crystal clear water. However, Ios has so much more to show its visitor. Homer, the world famous poet is said to have been born in Ios by Clymene, his mother. His tomb, discovered in 1770 can be visited in the area called Plakoto. The “Omiria” cultural festival is held on the island every year in honor of the great Greek poet Odysseus Elytis. A spectacular theatre named after him, which is made of stone and is a replica of the ancient theater of Sicily, is worth a visit. It is said that there are as many churches in the Cyclades as there are poppies in a field in spring; Ios definitely holds the prize

with over 400 churches and chapels scattered around the island. Visit a church found lying half-sunken in the ground on the road from the port up to Chora – the ‘capital’ of the island. According to ancient mythology, once the Cyclades were plagued

by a deadly epidemic. Apollo’s son Aristaios made a sacrifice to Zeus imploring him to help. That is when Zeus sent a northern wind called the ‘meltemi’ which blew for 40 days, cleaning the Cyclades of this epidemic and thus saving the people.

Cyclades Islands The Rock, as Ios is called by its frequent visitors, has an outstanding nightlife with many bars and clubs to dance and drink the night away in. The nightclubs close around 8am so that you can dance all night long and into the morning sun on this island. The narrow streets of Chora are filled with partying tourists during the summer season. That is part of the fun. The whole town becomes one large outdoor club. Mylopotas Beach is the most popular beach on Ios, and one of the best in the Greek Islands. It regularly features in polls as one of the “Top 10 Beaches in Europe. Mylopotas is a Blue Flag beach which is more than 1km long and very wide, with beautiful golden sand and crystal clear clean water. Another one best known beach in Ios is Manganari beach on the south of the island, where swimming in its crystal waters is an experience everyone should try.

Ios acquired a full travelogue network of hiking paths through picturesque beaches, churches, archaeological sites etc. The restoration of this network was completed by a group of volunteers of the Greek Cultural Mountaineering Club of Fyli, in its long quest for the emergence of old paths. After their recovery from the team of volunteers of the Club, which is distinguished for its environmental and cultural sensitivity, the view of the ornate stonework or the carved steps on the already existing rocks was revealed, and the passage through them is now unobstructed.

Furthermore, the islands are close by, making it ideal for those that wish to enjoy sailing but at the same time explore different places and enjoy the night life most of these islands have to offer. Enjoy the dazzling light and crystal clear blue water – a paradise on earth

Cyclades Islands Yacht Charter : The most famous island group in the Aegean Sea is comprised of some of the most beautiful islands in the world! Gorgeous sandy beaches, architecture in white and blue, traditional lifestyle, folk music, warm, hospitable people and barren landscapes with isolated chapels, turn a trip to the Cyclades into a lifetime experience. The name “Cyclades” refers to the islands forming a circle (the name in English means: “circular islands”) around the sacred island of Delos. According to Greek mythology, Poseidon, God of the sea, furious at the Cyclades nymphs, turned them into islands. Millions of Greek and foreign visitors visit the Cyclades every year to enjoy the dazzling light and the crystal clear blue waters, in their quest of a paradise on earth. Dodecanese Islands Yacht Charter: The Dodecanese Islands in south-eastern Aegean is the sunniest corner in Greece. Twelve large islands and numerous smaller ones with crystal clear waters, sandy or pebbly beaches, important archaeological finds, imposing Byzantine and medieval monuments and unique traditional settlements are waiting to be discovered. www.travelling.gr 47

Ιsland hopping If you are desperately seeking to discover lesser-known, unspoiled destinations visit Leros or Pserimos. But there is always Rhodes and Kos, larger and more cosmopolitan islands awaiting to offer you lasting, and treasured memories. a two week sailing itinerary is recommended for this area. Ionian Islands Yacht Charter: The Ionian Islands refer to the chain of Greek Islands stretching along the west coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea. The islands are well known for their beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, architecture, charming villages and stunning scenic countryside which is verdant and flourishing with greenery and nature. Each Ionian island has a distinct character. The islands are also known by their Italian names. These islands are known to be covered with green unlike the Cyclades, which is due to rareness of rain. Historically, these islands had a common fate, especially the three major islands of Corfu, Cefalonia and Zante.

Saronic Islands Yacht Charter:Â Aegina, Agkistri, Spetses, Hydra, Poros, Salamina and the peninsula of Methana form the island complex of the Argosaronic Gulf in southern Greece. Scattered over the Argosaronic Gulf and steeped in ancient mythology, these islands are small havens close to Athens. Daily ferry connection from the port of Piraeus makes them a lovely, easily accessible all-yearround destination for the Athenians. Visitors here will enjoy natural beauty, historical treasures, unique architecture, and glamorous, yet a romantic atmosphere. Sporades Islands Yacht Charter: The Northern Sporades is made up of 24 islands, only four of which are inhabited; Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos, and Skyros. The Sporades are fertile and heavily wooded, with pine-forested mountains sloping down to some of the best beaches in the Aegean, and the local architecture is more characteristic of Northern Greece, with less whitewashing and more stone roofs. Skiathos is the best known and easiest to get to; it is thus the most crowded, with throngs of visitors arriving all summer. Skopelos, while just as attractive, is less touristy outside of July and August, while Alonnisos is much quieter.

Cruises to Greece

Small havens close to Athens

Popular for romantics Popular for romantics and history lovers alike, a Greek cruise will get you up close and personal with the ancient world. Ports on the mainland include Athens, Greece’s capital, as well as Gythion and Katakolon, the gateway to Olympia. Each Greek Isle has its own feel. Look for nightlife in Mykonos and sunsets in Santorini; many cruises stay late to take advantage. You won’t find a better beach spot than Corfu, and Old Town in Rhodes is a shoppers dream. Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Lines When sailing the Eastern Mediterranean, cruisers are spoiled for choice. Big ships tend to visit big ports -- the “greatest hits” of the Eastern Mediterranean destinations, such as Venice, Athens and Istanbul. Almost all major lines offer such sailings, including Celebrity, Holland America, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Disney. For a more European feel, consider cruising the region with a company based on the continent. Costa and MSC Cruises, both headquartered in Italy, offer shorter and often cheaper itineraries (as well as great pasta). British lines P&O, Thomson and Cunard have numerous sailings, while the German line Hapag-Lloyd provides the ultimate in luxury.

Based in Athens, Celestyal Cruises offers both short and long cruises around the Med and Variety has yacht-style sailings to small Greek islands that aren’t served by larger ships. Luxury vessels also ply this region of the Med, including Regent Seven Seas, Azamara, Crystal, Silversea, Oceania and Seabourn. Often, these voyages not only visit smaller ports like Hvar, Split, Mykonos, Santorini and Cyprus, but they’re longer in duration, also traveling to the Western Mediterranean. Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Tips Read up. With so many old civilizations in one region, it’s easy to get disoriented. A little bit of advance reading, be it fiction or nonfiction, could go a long way in terms of preparation. Drink up. The sun can be brutal in the Med during the heat of summer. Make sure you bring plenty of bottled water, and hydrate frequently. Lace up. The terrain at ancient sites can be dusty and uneven. You’ll want shoes with some traction; it’s not the place for flimsy footwear. www.travelling.gr 49

Greek cuisine – more than just a healthy diet

Greece... 52 a country full of invaluable treasures

The Mediterranean Diet is globally accepted and considered to be of the best. Based on all food groups and in the right quantities, it guarantees longevity and good health. Cereals, fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, dairy products and top of the food pyramid in significantly smaller portions are sugars and fats. The Greek cuisine is based on that nutritional pyramid and that is what makes it stand out, not only for its unique recipes but also the fact that it is a healthy diet, nourishing the organism with all that it needs to be healthy. In Greece, one will find an abundance of fruit, olives, vegetables, legumes, beans, fish and many other basics used in the Greek cuisine. Each place has its own traditional delicacy; olive oil from Kalamata, honey from Crete, mastic from Chios, pies from Ikaria – made from the wild greens that are hand-picked from the mountains and fields, papalina from Lesvos – raw freshly-caught sardines “cooked” in salt which make an excellent accompaniment to ouzo, another exclusively Greek drink which aromatizes the mouth and sends your senses off to delirious levels. Feta cheese made from both goats’ and cows’ milk is an unbeatable source of calcium. Tomato croquettes from Serifos and Sifnos.

Greek products are exported all over the world

The list goes on and on. What one has to do when visiting a particular area in Greece is to ask what they specialize in and enjoy it. At the mention of “mousaka”, one immediately thinks of Greece, however, this is but one of the many delicious dishes one can enjoy at any one of the many traditional restaurants and tavernas which pride themselves in their cuisine and service. Throughout the years, it was inevitable for Greece to be influenced by its many occupants one might think. There has surely been some influence or another in Greek cookery, but one is not to think that the Greek cuisine has not

itself travelled and influenced other countries who have not failed to recognize its significance and uniqueness. Greek products are exported all over the world and have become staples in the diet of people globally. Greek yoghurt being one of these – even considered to be on the list of “super foods” – it is known for its smooth texture and thickness, unlike the runny yoghurt found in other countries. Whether the secret is in the milk it is used to be made or in the method of making it, is of no consequence – the fact remains that Greeks know their food and have taught many nations the importance of good nutrition and a balanced diet.

Wonderful tastes On your trip around the Aegean Sea, one is bound to become overwhelmed by fascinating aromas. This is an area of numerous gastronomic explorations: scrumptious white or tomato sauces, tenderly prepared pulses, domestic vegetables, bread as well as rusks with a robust taste provided by the local wheat and barley varieties in addition to the flavorful fresh goat cheese compose a delicious cuisine. Magnificent Sea and Sun The Aegean is blessed with sun, wind and sea lending its local produce with splendid fragrances, offering appetizing meals which go back to ancient times. The islands’ microclimate assists the land produce aromatic herbs, spices, olive and citrus groves as well as local products, which oftentimes are globally unique; oregano, thyme, bay leaves, lemons and olive oil promise to please your taste buds. Fresh fish and seafood appetisers Fish may be prepared in a variety of ways provided that one uses imagination ... and imagination is what Greeks possess. Small or medium sized fish are thoroughly salted, floured and fried in sizzling olive oil producing some delicious crispy treats also served and preserved in a sourish marinade-sauce called ‘savoro’. In many islands this dressing is made with olive oil, quality vinegar and rosemary or oregano. Especially on Tinos Island they add Greece... 54 a country full of invaluable treasures

petimezi (grape must molasses) giving the dressing a one-of-akind flavor. Various other treats to crave are red mullets in a crust of barley rusks on Mytilini; oven-baked fish with sesame paste on Rhodes; capers and chub mackerel, onions and grouper stew, picarel omelettes and pancakes on Santorini and Syros; silverside pie on Kimolos; stuffed squid, cuttlefish with fennel and olives and a lot more. Other little exclusive meze (meaning appetisers) to go along with your tsipouro or ouzo drinks are dry salt sardines off Mytilini, sun dried chub mackerel grilled over live coals known as ‘gouna’ (meaning fur) from Paros, salad with herring roe from Syros and marinated anchovies. Fine Meats The semi-wild goats (called fouriarika on Crete Island) are the indisputable kings of the Aegean Islands; they are fed off the scant flora and drink brackish water from springs found near the sea. Goat meat in the area is accompanied by wild greens or seasonal vegetables, such as lettuce, artichokes, zucchini, fresh broad beans and eggplants in addition to the most commonly homegrown vegetables or pulses -chickpeas being a definite favorite. The meat is prepared in tomato or egg and lemon sauces. Try mastelo (oven-baked goat with herbs and wine), kapama from Rhodes Island (goat meat stuffed with rice), vizanti from Karpathos (stove baked goat meat) and pilafi from Kassos. Several savoury mezedes which go excellent with Greek strong

red wine are syglino (smoked pork bits in lard), apaki (lean fillet or steak), kavourmas (fried pork bits preserved in fat) and all sort of aromatized pork sausages. Greens and Aromatic Plants The Aegean landscape with its seemingly infertile hills, volcanic soil, dry olive groves and rocky coasts conceals lots of surprises. Boiled greens picked from the mountains, sprinkled with olive oil and lemon alonged with grilled meat and fish. A significantly huge amount of aromatic plants and herbs such as oregano, thyme and marjoram transform marinades and lemon-flavoured stews. An unique group of wild plants which grow by the seashore are caper and kritamos (samphire), that make some outstanding meze (appetisers) to accompany the traditional spirit, tsipouro. Pulses One can easily find black eyed beans, chickpeas, green peas, lupin and lathyra (grass peas) on many of the Aegean Islands. Chickpeas are Sifnos Island’s top flavour, as they are sealed in a ceramics casserole and gradually cooked for several hours (typically all night long), in a traditional outdoor oven together with sliced onions, bay leaves or oregano and lots of olive oil. Santorini’s fava is a distinguished pulse (endangered with extinction), which is served with diced onions, oregano, capers and extra virgin olive oil. Fava and chickpeas are also served as croquettes flavoured with onions, spearmint, parsley and flour.

Savoury Cheeses The Aegean Islands are well-known for their scrumptious goat cheese. On Sifnos and Folegandros Islands try manoura cheese, which ripened in wine sediment. Kalathaki (meaning little basket) is a white goat cheese from Limnos Island which takes its shape by the weaved wicker basket in which it matures. On Kos Island make a point in enjoying krasotyri, a ridged, log-like form wine-cheese. Various other wine-cheeses can easily also be found on Nisyros as well as Leros Islands. Sitaka is Kasos’ Island velvety cheese produced using goat or sheep’s milk; it is somewhat salted and baked in low temperatures in a traditional oven. Sitaka is frequently served along with delicious local pasta and caramelized onions. San Mihalis cheese on Syros Island; chloro from Santorini, consumed fresh or even aged over pasta. Finally the popular Cretan graviera cheeses are simply a few of Aegean’s cheese tradition! Tselementes The name Tselementes has been synonymous with Greek food. In 1910 Nicholas Tselementes a well-known chef from the island of Sifnos wrote the first Greek Cookbook which became every housewife’s cooking bible for over sixty years. The book sold over 100,000 copies in 10 editions by the time Tselementes died in 1958. Through his classic books he taught generations of Greek cooks the finer points not only of traditional Greek cooking but also combinations of Greek and Western European cooking. This is the most recent publication of his original cooking encyclopedia. www.travelling.gr 55

Greek wines are

among the best in the world with varieties differing significantly depending on the area where the grapes are grown. Moreover, wine is among the primary elements in the Greek diet; it is considered to be more than an accompaniment to a meal – it is a mild sedative and as many doctors will readily confirm, a glass of wine a day extends life and improves our overall health. The country’s geography is so varied, thus making the varieties of grapes so unique, contributing to the exceptional flavor and aroma of one of the world’s most renowned wines. It has become a serious competitor to the wines of countries which were once considered to hold the prize for the best quality and varieties. Throughout the country, Greek vineyards have developed and have massively improved not only their quality but also the method of wine production since the younger generation have taken over from their parents and have considerably altered the whole process of production. Modern equipment and new methods have been applied, increasing production and improving the quality of not only the grapes but of the actual wine-making process itself. Starting from September, the month when grapes are harvested, otherwise called the “Trygos” period, the “rush” of producing one of the world’s best wines begins.

The “Wine Roads” – a trip worth taking

The countless wineries, which are wonderful establishments, visited by many a tourist who come to Greece to experience some of its treasures – its wineries on their list – open their doors and receive its guests treating them to an amazing wine-tasting experience. The actual production of wine is closely related and dependent on the seasons, climate and area where the grapes are grown and subsequently the quality and acidity of the actual soil in which the vines are planted. Above all though, is perhaps the attentiveness and the knowhow of the wine producers themselves. A visit through the grape vines – what is called the “Wine Roads” is an amazing and unforgettable experience. Tasting the product as you walk through, comparing the different varieties has become one of the trends in modern tourism. After this wonderful wine-tasting experience, one cannot ignore the many local restaurants and tavernas which offer traditional and local delicacies that bring out the full

flavor of this “nectar” – this gift offered to the wine-lover – the one who dared take the Wine Road in order to indulge in this never to be forgotten experience. Some of the best wineries can be found in the Peloponnese – the varieties such as Agiorgitico, Moschofilero and Roditis are among the most popular produced in this area in Southern Greece. Attica is also home to a great many wineries. Visit Megara, Spata, Paiania, Koropi, Oinoi and the list goes on – vineyards stretching over 116,000 acres can be spotted as you fly over the area, before you touch down at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. Take a trip up north and to the west and combine a visit to archaeological sites, ancient monasteries where the monks themselves produce a most excellent variety of wine and are ready to treat their visitors to it. Do not forget to buy a bottle or two to take home with you to enjoy with friends at home. The beautiful islands of Samos and Santorini also have a lot to do with the fame of Greek wines, placing them on the list of the world’s most exclusive qualities and bearing award-winning labels which are inevitably open invitations to wine connoisseurs around the globe.
