Foundation & Organization Founded in 1916 as a Department of Sacramento High School, Sacramento City College is the seventh oldest public community college in California and the oldest institution of higher learning in Sacramento. In 1922, the citizens of Sacramento organized a junior college district by severing the connections between the college and Sacramento High School. This plan of organization remained in force until 1936 when the college became a part of the Sacramento City Unied School District. Twenty-eight years later, as a result of a March 17, 1964 election, Sacramento City College separated from the Sacramento City Unied School District to join the newly organized Los Rios Junior College District which assumed the operation of American River College and Sacramento City College. In 1970 the newly renamed Los Rios Community College District opened a third campus, Cosumnes River College. Folsom Lake College became the fourth fully accredited college in the District in 2003.

SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGE PANTHERS

Robert Maglione - Head Coach Coach Robert Maglione is in his 31st year as a community college coach in the great game of softball. This is his 16th season at Sacramento City College and his 13th as the head coach. Before being named head coach in January 1998 Maglione was the Associate Head Coach with Tim Kiernan for two years. It was in this position that Maglione and Kiernan coach the Panthers to a state championship and a runner up nish while winning over 120 games in that period. Maglione is no stranger to the head coaching position. During his tenure at Napa Valley College (1981-1995) he took a non-existent program to a top ten program. At NVC Maglione compiled a record of 456-224. Over the past thirty years Maglione has won 21 conference titles, gone to the round of 16 of the playoffs 23 times, has been to the Final Eight 12 times and been part of the state championship team twice. Has been voted Conference Coach Of the Year 15 times over his career, Northern California Coach of the year 7 times and along with his staff voted as the NFCA national coaching staff of the year 4 times. At this time Coach Maglione record stands at 1,143 wins and 370 losses, which is the most all-time for California Junior College softball. Maglione was a three-sport athlete at San Rafael High School in Marin County, California, and rst started playing fast pitch at the age of 15 in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated from CSU Chico (’76) with a degree in social welfare and earned a Master’s from St. Mary’s College (’95) in HPER. Maglione also saw duty in the United States Navy from 1970-1974. Even more impressive than his list of professional accomplishments, Maglione is especially proud to be a cancer survivor. Maglione lives with his wife and partner for life Sharleen in American Canyon, California. They have been married for 28 years this May and have three adult children: Jeannie and Jennifer and son Jason. Maglione also has six grandchildren, Lazarus, Lauren, Leilani, Sage, Asher and Ethen. Coach Maglione would also like to thank his assistant coaches for their never-ending work with the Panther program to make it the best.

Gary McKee - Assistant Coach Coach McKee is returning for a 3rd stint as an assistant coach with the Sacramento City College Panthers. He has recently retired from the oil industry after 35 years, which will allow him to rejoin the Panthers after a 3 year hiatus. A former fast pitch player himself, Gary began coaching girls in the sport of fast pitch softball over 20 years ago. His main duty will be to help the City pitching staff. Gary has had this duty around Coach Maglione for several years starting back when the two teamed to coach a very successful A.S.A. 16 and under team. Gary resides in Sacramento with his wife Debbie. He has two daughters, Andrea and Erin who were both fast pitch pitchers; and a stepdaughter, Amy who also played fast pitch softball.

SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGE PANTHERS

The Panthers have raised the state championship banner in 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2004, making it the most successful softball program in Northern California. Here’s a look at the championship teams! 1988 This title cost coach Tim Kiernan the mustache. He was true to his word that if the Panthers won their rst title, he would shave off the stuff above his lip, and hours after the nal out, Kiernan was sheared. Charlene Manley pitched her fourth consecutive shutout and the Panthers pushed across a run in the fth inning to beat Palomar 1-0 in Hayward to cap a 44-6 season. Manley allowed only 10 hits in the tournament sweep and was named Most Valuable Player. Manley allowed only two rst-inning hits in the nals. She was one of seven returning starters who returned for another shot after SCC had nished second in 1987. The defense, anchored by Shannon Padova and Shelly Suwa, was superb. Catcher Melinda Garcia and rst baseman Dawnielle King were selected to the all-state team and Margie McCune drove in the only run in the state nal game. Manly won 34 games that season, tied for the best single-season total in SCC history, and she had a 0.08 earned run average. Nicki Dennis led the team with 10 homers, 16 doubles and 56 RBI’s. Padovan had 18 sacraces. The All-Americans that season included Dennis, Manley, and Pandovan.

1992 No team in state history ever boasted of such dominating pitching. And not with just one hurler. SCC had the ideal 1-2 punch to punch out the competition with Amy Windmiller and Kim Gonzalez. WIndmiller went 27-1 and Gonzo was 26-2 as SCC rolled to a school record54-3 record, including four games at Sacramento Softball COmplex to take its second title. Fittingly, WIndmiller set the SCC record with a numbing 365 strikeouts. Gonzalez is second all time with 187. Windmiller had a 0.07 ERA that spring, tops all time at SCC, and Gonzalez is tied for second at 0.08. Windmiller allowed only four earned runs all season and beat Palomar 4-1. She struck out 10 and went 3-0 in the tourney with Gonzalez winning the other game. WIndmiller tossed a no-hitter against Palomar for a 3-0 win earlier in that tournament. All told, Windmiller had 10 no-hitters and ve perfect games. And when she took the day off, Gonzo took over and blew away the competition. The defense was anchored by shortstop Vicky RIos, who had 64 hits and scored 50 runs. Becky Burroughs set an SCC record with 10 triples. First baseman Stephanie Acton and catcher Beth Gerkin also had superb seasons.

1996 More pitching, more hitting and more defense. And another state title. SCC again again featured a poweful 1-2 pitching combo with Cheri Shinn and Sarah Ayres, and the Panthers elded perhaps their most deadly lineup as three players drove in 47 or more runs. The Panthers set a school record for wins and nished with one of the best marks in state history at 59-4. Two losses to Solano in the regular season served as the wakeup call SCC needed and the Panthers roared through the playoffs, winning all 8 games and the state championship against Fullerton at Ohlone College. Shinn went 29-2 with a 0.59 ERA. Ayres was 13-0 with a 0.08 ERA, which tied for second best on the all time SCC list. Shinn was one of ve All-Americans. In addition to her mound dominance, she has a .369 average, drove in 49 runs and clubbed four homers. All-AMerican inelder Laura Redding hit .402 with 54 RBI’s, tied for forth best on the all-time SCC list. All-American third baseman Kim Martinez hit .367 with 30 RBI’s after leading the state in scoring in basketball, where she was also an All-American.

10

All American Londyn Ray batted .360 with 47 RBI’s and tied the SCC single-season record with 10 homers. Denise Jackson, an All-American in volleyball and softball, hit .333 with 31 RBI’s and four homers. Each of the All-Americans earned scholarships.

2011 SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

2004 They’ve done it again! After missing the state championship by one game in the 2003 season, SCC has had it’s redemption. The Panthers went on two winning streaks, 17-0 and 27-0, to nish out their 2004 season 44-2 as Bay Valley Conference and California State Champions. All-American Nikki Cinque led the Panthers pitching staff with a 25-1 record and 0.32 ERA. She was honored as Most Valuable Player for the BVC, State Pitcher of the Year and Most Valuable Player of the State Championships. No. 2 pitcher Krystina Gomez went 15-1 for the season with a 0.63 ERA. Gomez, who threw the nal pitch for the Panthers in their 3-1 championship win over Cypress College, was honored as Most Valuable Pitcher for the State Championships. Eight individuals batted over .400 for the season, including Wendi Salgo (.495), Mandi Salcido (.464), Gomez (.455), Cinque (.443), Tony Rodriguez (.443), Elisha Reed (.429), Iris Mendoza (.417) and Traci Bender (.408). The defense was locked down by All-American inelders Salgo and Bender, who had a combined total of 60 RBI’s and 80 hits. Salcido also had a stellar season with 24 RBI’s and 52 hits. In league play SCC earned 305 runs and allowed only 37. In guiding the team to the state championship, head coach Robert Maglione was honored as the recipient of the 2004 California Community College Coach of the Year award. No team from Northern California has won a State Championship since the Panthers did this season.
