Midnight Prayer
Publisher’s Point by Rob Patz Welcome to the October edition of the Publisher’s Point. I hope you have had a wonderful start to Fall, which, by the way, is my favorite time of year! I want to thank everyone for the wonderful birthday wishes via Facebook, text and Twitter. It is humbling when you realize how many people care about your birthday! We are now in the countdown stages for Creekside 2015, which promises to be the biggest year to date. If you have never been to Pigeon Forge in the fall, you need to come and check out the beautiful colors that God creates through the fall leaves. I recently had a great opportunity to emcee Hope’s Journey Homecoming. Check the website for a story by Robert York about the event; it was a wonderful time. It was great seeing Josh and Ashley Franks and the Browders, along with of course, the host group Hope’s Journey. It was more than just a Homecoming; it was an amazing service. Speaking of Robert York, I want to take this opportunity to thank him publicly for the Coca-Cola Cake, which he made himself! I must tell you: that may have been the best Coca-Cola Cake I have ever tasted. Sorry folks at Cracker Barrel, but you don’t hold a candle to Robert York. Thank you for being a true and faithful friend Robert and I look forward to seeing you very soon. I know that we are a little over a month away from Thanksgiving, but I want to challenge you today to start writing down different things that you’re thankful for. What I do is get 3 x 5 cards and each day I write down something that I believe God has blessed me with. It is a great way to count our blessings and I challenge you to do that this year before Thanksgiving. When you read back over them on Thanksgiving Day, you’ll realize how blessed this year has been for you! As always I want to thank each and every one of you for praying for me and for the magazine. I truly feel your prayers each day as we continue to work and strive to make this the best magazine in Southern Gospel music. We can’t do that without you helping us each day to share our stories on Facebook and Twitter and all of the other social media outlets. See you at Creekside 2015 on November 2nd through 5th! Until next time, this is the Publisher’s Point.

A Letter From the Editor By Lorraine Walker
It’s October and the leaves are turning, the pumpkins are ripening and the air has a definite edge to it. Fall is here and even as the seasons change, so do a lot of our great Southern Gospel groups. This month our cover feature is Karen Peck and New River who have just added a new member, Ricky Braddy. While I was blessed to be present for one of former tenor, Jeff Hawes’ last concerts, I look forward to the wonderful music that will come from this new lineup. Every time I have talked with the members of Karen Peck and New River, I am touched by their realness; their ability to remain in touch with their audience and let the Holy Ghost’s giftings flow through them. I’m sure you will sense that through the feature written by Jennifer Campbell. Another reason we have featured Karen Peck and New River this fall, is they were multiple winners at the 2014 Diamond Awards held at Creekside Gospel Music Convention. These beloved artists were awarded the Mixed Group of the Year, Trio of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. Karen Peck herself was awarded Female Vocalist of the Year. I don’t know if there will be another repeat of multi-winners, but the 2015 Diamond Awards are sure to be entertaining. I hope you have made your plans to attend the Creekside Gospel Music Convention this year! For more information, please read the Creekside Update in this issue. This past month not only brought changes to several groups, it also brought deaths of saints within the realm of Gospel music. Jim Brady’s father, Chuck Brady, passed away on September 14. That same night, songwriter/vo-
calist Carroll McGruder, went home to be with Jesus. I remember in the ‘90’s, being blessed to hear the McGruders with their band as they toured through Ontario. The straight-to-the-point songs, the simple message of Jesus, the excitement and the power of the Holy Spirit were so strong in the building. Plus, they had a kickin’ band! Carroll and Priscilla sang, and their daughter, Shawnee and son, Eric, accompanied them. I am not sure who all was in the band at the time, but I’m guessing that Denny Autry, Lanny Ewing and Stan Cook may have been there. There was such a raw, emotional delivery in that group. Now Carroll joins Priscilla, and they are no long “Just Warmin’ Up.” They are in that Heavenly band! I trust you will enjoy each artist that we present this month as much as I enjoyed that taste of original Gospel music. Each of these singers, songwriters and communicators are following in the path laid by former artists like the McGruders. Family groups, male quartets, trios, and cowboys; this issue has them all. Find your vacation destination, whether your taste is Alaska, Mississippi or the Smoky Mountains; they all have Gospel music. There is a lot of variety this month and I hope you take time to read them all. Above all, I hope that prayer and the Word of God accompany any change you may be going through this season. Anything you need, you can find at the feet of Jesus. Let Him be your constant companion, through life and death and into the life beyond. That is the ultimate message of this wonderful music and committed artists that we present every month. Have a great Autumn!
Life Love & LEGENDS by lou wills hildreth We consider it an honor to greet you via this great digital magazine. A huge thank you goes to our publisher Rob Patz and editor Lorraine Walker, and blessings to you, our readers, as we share from the depths of our heart. Howard and I talk about Heaven a lot more these days than we did a few years ago. We have been blessed with almost 69 years of marriage, and God has shown us His marvelous favor so many times. At this present season, we are privileged to be able to take care of each other, and we are thankful our son and daughter live nearby. Howard and I have shared our LIFE and LOVE for gospel music all these years, and our conversation often revolves around the music and the LEGENDS. And yes, sometimes we talk about Heaven. Howard and I totally agree on a song that expresses
our faith when it is our time to leave this world. “Look For Me At Jesus Feet,” was written by Squire Parsons in 1974, and it is still being sung by my Wills Family and many others. The Booth Brothers sang it at Singin’ In Texas, at Sugar Land Baptist Church, Houston, a few weeks ago, during a fabulous concert series promoted by David and Dana Hancock. We sat in the front row and were thrilled to see and hear a fabulous young soloist, Jake Cowley, classic guitar picker Doyle Dykes, plus two legendary trios. Greater Vision’s Gerald Wolfe, Rodney Griffin, and Chris Allman enthralled us with their songs and testimony, followed by the Booth Brothers, Michael and Ron, who were superb. Paul Lancaster is now the third member of this trio, replacing Jim Brady who is now traveling with his wife, Melissa. I have known Paul for years and knew he would be great with the Booth Brothers, and he is excellent! The entire concert was absolutely stunning and one we will never forget! Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the highlight of the evening that took place at the finale. A huge emotional time for Howard and me occurred when the Booth Brothers dedicated a special song to us! It was pure delight hearing their voices blending softly on these poignant lyrics: “If I leave this world of sorrow sometime before you do, just look for me in heaven and we’ll talk the ages through, but if at first you fail to see me, let me tell you where I’ll be, I’ll be thanking Christ my Savior for saving a wretch like me. I’ve been longing and I’ve been waiting for the precious holy one to see, There we will be through the ages, ‘Look For Me At Jesus Feet.’”
Howard and I consider it a privilege to share this great Squire Parson’s song with you, our dear readers. Lou Wills Hildreth gosplvideo@aol.com P. O. Karen Peck and New River By Jennifer Campbell
Twenty-four years ago, a dream was realized. In 1991, Rickey and Karen Peck Gooch, along with Karen’s sister Susan Peck Jackson, formed the musical ministry known as Karen Peck and New River. Little did they know that this ministry would literally take them all over the world. Since that time, New River has been awarded three Gospel Music Association Dove Awards and three Grammy Award nominations. Karen has been named the Singing News Fan Awards Favorite Soprano an unprecedented 11 times. Despite their
numerous accolades, one single thing stands above all else. Their ministry is centered on proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ through song. Through all of their joys and sorrows, they have remained true to their calling and follow the footsteps of Jesus every step of the way. Long before New River became a reality, a little girl named Karen was too small to be seen while singing about her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Karen
says, “They used to stand me in a chair when I was three
years old. Mama used to sing in church and my first time I remember singing, I sang ‘I’m Bound for That City.’” Karen and Susan’s first recollection of Southern Gospel music was attending the All-Night Gospel Sing in Atlanta. Karen states, “I remember my Mom and Dad used to take me and my sisters to the All-Night Gospel Sing in Atlanta. Literally, they would be all night and we’d be in the Municipal Auditorium in Atlanta, Georgia, and they would last until six o’clock in the morning. I remember being mes-
music. I’ve always had a love for it.” Even though Karen has always loved Southern Gospel music, her parents are the ones who instilled a love for music at an early age. Karen says her greatest influence has been her parents. She comments, “I owe so much to my Mom and Dad. Daddy took me to most of my piano lessons and rehearsals when I’d sing. He passed away in 1993. He was an influence and Mama has been a big influence. Both of my parents were musically inclined, but Mama was the person that put me into piano lessons when I was in the fourth grade. She saw a little bit of talent in me and I owe so much to her.” In much the same way, Rickey had a similar upbringing, having been influenced by his mom. Rickey says, “My mother taught me to love God and always work for what you have.” On the other hand, Ricky says that he cannot choose just one person. He explains, “I don't know that there's one single person who has influenced me the most. I am who I am today because of all the wonderful people who have loved, encouraged, and supported me throughout my life.”
merized when Vestal Goodman came out on the stage.” Susan echoes Karen’s comments by adding, “I would get so excited when the Goodmans would walk out on stage and start singing. Vestal would step up to sing and her voice would fill the building. She was my favorite!” Rickey Gooch says his first memory of Southern Gospel music was when his mom had a group come to their house to practice when he was a very small boy. Ricky Braddy shares that he’s always wanted to sing Gospel music, even as a child. He says, “I was four years old when I first blurted out the alto part to a song my sister was singing. She and I sang ‘When I Need Someone to Talk To’ in our little old church. I've done a lot of types of music, but nothing satisfies like singing about Jesus.” While New River has created their own style of music, there have been other artists who have had a positive impact on their lives and ministry. Karen says, “Having the privilege of singing with the Nelons, I was able to sing with the best of the best. To be able to work with Lari Goss, who produced a lot of their projects, challenged me vocally. Alphus LeFevre was my first boss in 1980 and he influenced me as well. I grew up listening to the Hinsons, Happy Goodmans, Inspirations, and Kingsmen. I just loved Southern Gospel
Many may be wondering, who is Ricky Braddy? In case you have not had the privilege of meeting him, he is the newest member of New River. Karen relates how he joined the group: “Once we announced that Jeff was leaving, Sherry Steele of the Steeles messaged me and said, ‘I’ve got a friend that knows a guy who lives in Nashville who was on American Idol a few seasons ago and wants to audition.’ So I told her to have him send us a demo. When I heard his demo, I thought he was very good, but we were on a long trip, so I wasn’t able to be home to audition anyone. This guy was persistent and sent me another demo. I started realizing that this guy must really want this job because
he really pursued it. So when we came home, we talked on the phone and set up a time to meet. We were at a fair in Lebanon, Tennessee. He came and stayed the afternoon with us, and we asked him to go with us the next weekend. Now he’s been here ever since!” Ricky recalls the first time he saw Karen: “I remember Karen when she was with the Nelons. I've always been blown away by her talent. The first time I met the group was actually over FaceTime while they were on their bus. I met them in person at the Wilson County Fair the next week, and sang with them the following weekend. I filled in with them four weeks in a row, and then they asked me if I'd join them full time! I felt a connection the first time I stepped foot on their bus, and singing with them has been a huge privilege.” “He sings under the anointing of the Lord,” Karen adds concerning Ricky. “He’s got power behind his voice. He’s a really good Christian man. We can always find a singer,
ing on original music. I've done a lot of studio work and I’ve led worship for area churches. I'm thrilled about this new chapter with Karen Peck and New River! I think God’s been preparing me for this. I'm so thankful that He is faithful to His promises, and I'm ready and honored to be a part of what He's doing.” So what happens when you put a husband and wife, son and daughter, sister, and somewhat of a complete stranger on the bus together? Karen says that traveling and ministering with her family is over and beyond anything she could have ever imagined. She adds, “I just never dreamed that the Lord would allow me to sing and have my husband and kids travel with me. My kids have always lived my calling and God is beginning to work in their hearts and their lives and now they have a calling. To be able to travel with my sister Susan; she has been a tremendous blessing in my life. She really is a rock and I depend on her more than she knows. I’ve been very, very blessed.” Rickey echoes Karen’s sentiments saying that the best thing he likes about traveling with his family is that they get to go to different places and meet great people. Recently, Karen has taken on a new role as a part-time actress in faith-based films. “The movies have been a positive thing in our ministry,” Karen states. “It opened doors that would not have opened otherwise. The first one, Joyful Noise, was a tremendous blessing. It literally landed in my lap. They called out of the blue and offered me the part. I was so blessed to be able to be a part of that movie. Of course, singing is my calling; being on the road, that’s what I do, that’s my job. But to be able to do a movie on the side - I was ready to do it again the next day. It wasn’t two years later that I had the opportunity to be in the movie Redeemed. It’s very contagious. I may have to wait two more years to be in another movie, but I hope the opportunity comes along!”
but you’ve got to find someone who can live on that bus with you. It’s a lot more than singing; it is personality and whether or not someone has a heart for ministry. We want someone lighthearted as well, because we like to have a lot of fun. We took a vote on the bus and it was unanimous. Everybody voted Ricky Braddy.” While Ricky is brand new to New River, he is no stranger to the music industry. He started singing with his mom, dad, and sister. He graduated from Belmont University in 2007. Then in 2008, he auditioned for American Idol. Ricky reminisces about his American Idol experience: “I ended up making it into the top 36 of season eight and onto the Wild Card show which placed me in the top 15. I remember during Hollywood week, several of us contestants would gather in one of our hotel rooms and worship for hours. I was able to share testimony and encouragement with a few people out there. After American Idol, I started work-
Even though she has garnered many honors throughout her musical career, Karen says her greatest accomplishment in life has been her kids. “They are my treasures,” Karen says lovingly. “I am so thankful to the Lord for allowing me to have them. I am a proud Mom. I love being with my kids 24 hours a day. We’ve always been very close. Matthew’s been on the road since he was two years old, and Kari’s been on the road since she was three weeks old. It was hard at times; it wasn’t easy taking care of the babies on the bus, but I would not have it any other way. I homeschooled so I could have them with me while I traveled. If I had it to do over again, I would do the same thing.” Looking towards the future, Karen hopes her children will teach her grandchildren to love the Lord. “If they would just fall in love with Jesus, they will never have to worry about anything in life,” Karen adds. “I tell my kids all of the time they just need to fall in love with Jesus.” Additionally,
Rickey says he hopes his grandchildren are taught to love God and sing about him. For New River, family time is something to be cherished. Whether they are on the road, at home, or on vacation, they enjoy spending time together. Rickey says one of his favorite vacation memories was going to London on the way to Sweden where they were scheduled to sing. Karen shares that one of their favorite vacation spots is Destin, Florida. She says, “We have our routines, we love to go to movies, we love to go out to eat, and of course, we spend the day at the beach.” Susan adds, “I remember as a child growing up we always had a family vacation during the summer. The same time every year we would go to the beach. It was so much fun. We still keep the beach trip tradition going. I enjoy the family time together, making memories.” When they are at home, they attend church as a family on Wednesdays at Free Chapel Worship Center in Gainesville, Georgia. As a mom, Karen said she loves to look over and see both of her kids praising the Lord. She says, “They travel on the road 200 days a year, but they love going to church on Wednesdays.” Karen continues, “We just love being around each other and I love the fact that my kids like being with their parents. Even though we travel together on the road all the time, we’re working, so it’s different being together and off on vacation.” Rickey adds, “It is an honor to have such a great wife and kids. I'm truly blessed.” Susan’s family enjoys spending time together as well when she is home. Her son, Joseph, recently started attending Toccoa Falls College. Susan says, “It is a wonderful college and he loves it there. He is fitting right in and getting
involved in sports. David and I are trying to get adjusted to our quiet home. There was always something going on when Joseph was home. I miss him so much but I believe God has great things for his life. Praying, trusting and believing God is in control, helps me to let go when I keep wanting to hang on. I am excited to see what God has planned for Joseph. My husband David is still doing what he loves, building steel guitars. He tells me every day that he is blessed to do what he loves to do.” Ricky enjoys time with his family as well. He says, “I have the most wonderful family in the world. Both of my parents have always encouraged me to follow God's call on my life. They trust The Holy Spirit to speak to me and lead me, so they've consistently supported me in my pursuit of what that looks like. The relationships I have with my whole family are some of the most valuable things to me. I love them.” Anyone who has met Karen, Susan, and all of New River know that they enjoy a successful musical career, all the while maintaining a close-knit family with Jesus Christ at the center of it all. So what if Karen wrote a book including many of her experiences through the years? Well, she would title the book, I’m Really a Blonde! Karen says, “I do think there’s going to be a book in my future. As a matter of fact, I’ve already started getting some thoughts together. I will say that I’ve had a good life, and I’ve been a very blessed person and I’m thankful for that.” Although New River fans may have to wait a while for Karen’s book, they can be watching for a new project from New River. In recognition of the 25th anniversary of Karen Peck and New River, they will be compiling a special project featuring 25 of their best songs, one for each year they have been singing as a group. Karen says, “We’re very
excited about this project and it will come out next year.” While New River enjoys many happy moments together, this year brought about one of the most difficult challenges they have ever faced, which is why they cherish time together now more than ever before. Karen shares, “A moment that I cherished this year was Rickey’s first chemo treatment. The kids and I, we sat down with him as he had his first treatment and that was a special moment in our family. Because the kids saw that life is not always easy and life is not always going to be happy and joyful, but there’s going to be hard times. But we are family and we stick together and they really saw that this is real life. We’re going to have challenges, but the Lord is our Helper.”
When asked if there was a song or experience that stands out in Karen’s mind and makes her realize it’s all worth it, Karen said, “One of the first times we ever sang ‘Four Days Late,’ we were up in North Carolina. There was a nice, older gentleman there and he came to me when we came off the stage after we had sung this song. He said, ‘I have to tell you something.’ He had lost his job and had lost his family. He had been sitting in the front seat of the car and was about to end his life. He happened to turn on the radio and ‘Four Days Late’ was playing. He said he pulled off the side of the road, prayed and cried out to the Lord for help. Within 48 hours, God restored everything back to him. I knew from that moment this was going to be a special song.” “Just last week, we were at a fair in Dyersburg, Tennessee,” Karen continues. “There was a lady and she was a fair worker. Her boss told her to set up a lemonade stand on the side of the stage. She told her boss she did not want to go where a Gospel sing was going to be. He made her go, so she went down there and was working that lemonade stand and she got saved. She accepted Jesus as her Savior. She said, ‘I’m so glad I came down and I’m so glad I worked the lemonade stand.’ We were rejoicing. These kinds of testimonies are really what keep us going.”
Surely, no family wants to hear the words, “You have cancer.” But through faith in the healing power of Jesus Christ, the journey becomes a little easier to bear when God intervenes in His perfect timing. Rickey says, “When I first discovered that I had cancer, the devil was telling me that it was bad and I wasn't going to make it. But the more I prayed and quoted scriptures, the less the devil came back. Anyone that has cancer or any other life threatening sickness needs to stay in the Word and pray, pray, pray! Keep us in your prayers. They really work.” The latest project from Karen Peck and New River is entitled, Pray Now. When this project was recorded, Karen and New River never realized how this project would minister to them in such a personal way. “We’re very blessed that ‘Pray Now’ is the number one song,” Karen says. “We are also very blessed that the Lord has helped us through Rickey being sick this year and that the doctors were able to get the cancer. We’re rejoicing. The Lord gave us a new lease on life. I want to tell everyone to spend time with your family and stop being so busy, slow down to take time to be with your loved ones. Pray Now, the whole album relates to where we are now. When we recorded these songs in January, we had no idea what we would be facing at that time.”
Looking back over the past 24 years, Susan states, “We never imagined when we started Karen Peck and New River that we would be where we are today. God has blessed us in so many ways. We have met wonderful friends along the journey, friends that support and pray for us every day. It has been a great journey and we are just getting started! I am blessed!” Karen says she looks back and sees how God opened doors for New River. “In the scriptures in Revelation, it says that whatever doors God opens, no man can shut,” Karen says. “I can really see how God opened doors, but I can also see the fact that we were willing to go through those doors. There have been many times that I’ve thought, my goodness gracious, I don’t know if I can do this or not. But the Lord always made a way. I love where we’ve been, but I’m excited about where we’re going.” Certainly, the ministry of Karen Peck and New River has only just begun. Rickey says, “Ten years from now, I hope we are staying the course and finish well.” Their zeal for the Lord’s work is the heartbeat of their ministry. They fix their eyes on Jesus, striving daily to do His perfect will. Through the Holy Spirit’s anointing on the lyrics they sing and words they speak, they continue to see lives changed. Karen says, “I pray that we can all stay faithful to the Lord and be obedient to the Lord’s will. I hope that more people will be saved and that more lives will be touched and changed through our music and our testimonies.”
KPNR Q&A If you could talk to Jesus Christ face to face, what would you say? Karen: Thank you. I look forward to wrapping my arms around Him and telling Him how much I love Him. What song has encouraged you during the difficult times in your life? Rickey: “My God Will Always Be Enough.” What advice would you give to a new artist? Susan: To always keep God first, work on your craft, never stop learning, and strive to do your best in every situation. What is your best experience with New River thus far? Ricky: Honestly, watching the way Karen and Susan pray and encourage people has really been amazing. (Add the following to the bottom of article please!) Special thanks to Ashley Dawn Edwards for submitting the Special Fan Question, “You've been singing and traveling for over 20 years now. In those 20 some years, is there a song or experience with an audience that stands out to you and makes you realize it's all worth it?” For more information on Karen Peck and New River, please visit www.karenpeckandnewriver.com. Mercy’s Well By Jaquita Lindsey
I delightfully chose to write on one of my favorite male trios this month. With roots tracing back to 1998, Brad Strider, Greg Gainer and Jake Wood make up what is collectively known today as Mercy’s Well. I have personally grown to love these guys and appreciate the heart that they have towards the music that they sing. Their 2014 released project, Today, has become one of my most played albums. It has 10 outstanding songs, such as “Come As We Are,” “I’ll Trade This Valley For A Mountain,” and “I Wanna Hear The Gospel,” to name a few. Mercy’s Well officially had its beginning in 2000. Group owner, Brad, tells us: “A friend of mine asked me to go with him to a revival service one night. He wanted me to play bass guitar with him and ‘sing a few.’ The people enjoyed it and we started receiving invitations to go to different revivals and other services. We eventually added a third part and changed the name to Mercy’s Well.” Brad Strider makes his home in Greensboro, NC, where
the trio has its base. He serves in all areas for Mercy’s Well, from booking to emceeing on the stage. Brad began singing at the age of eight, following the footsteps of his parents and grandparents. “My grandpa had a quartet in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s. Also, my parents were in a quartet in the ‘70’s. That led to a family group, containing my brother and I,” he tells us. “I am so grateful for the musical examples that were lived in front of me. My family still sings together to this day, just without me,” he laughingly interjects. Brad is also the owner of the graphics design company, b.creative, which keeps him extremely busy when he is not on the road singing. The company serves the graphic needs for several Southern Gospel groups, such as the Hoppers and Tribute Quartet, as well as the designs for the well-known event, National Quartet Convention. Brad’s most favorite past time also comes in the form of music. “I am an avid collector of classic Southern Gospel records. My collection is currently over 1,000 and is constantly growing in number,” he proudly admits. “I thoroughly enjoy collecting and listening to the albums
of the classic groups that I grew up listening to. My alltime favorite is definitely the Cathedral Quartet.”
Long-time member, Greg Gainer, makes his home just down the road in Kernersville, NC. Greg’s smooth vocal ability and gentle spirit make him a favorite with audiences wherever the group performs. He also occasionally accompanies Mercy’s Well on stage with his piano abilities. During the week, Greg sells security systems for ADT. In his free time at home, he enjoys home improvement projects and working outside in his yard.
The newest member for Mercy’s Well is the young, talented Jake Wood. He makes his home in Trinity, NC. Although Jake has been with the trio for only a few short months, he is already singing his way into the hearts of those who are listening. “I have already had such a great time on the road with the guys,” says Jake. “I am excited to see the doors that God is going to open up for us in the future.” Jake began singing at the age of 11 and is the odd one of his family, being the only singer. He shares Brad’s love and musical influence of the memorable Cathedral Quartet, as well as Gold City. Jake spent roughly four years with local groups before joining Mercy’s Well. He is currently a student, enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is working towards a music performance major. Between traveling and school, Jake does not have much free time. But when time permits, he does enjoy outside activities, such as hiking.
Greg says he took interest in the piano around the age of seven. “I would listen to choirs that came to the Christian school that I attended. Then I would go home and try to pick the songs out on the piano. My mom started taking me to piano lessons. Like any kid, I fought it at first. But today, I’m glad that I stuck with it,” he says. Greg later developed his vocal talents while in school. Before singing with Mercy’s Well, he spent about three years with the Pathfinders Quartet.
Anyone who has ever traveled can attest to things going wrong from time to time. So was the case with a trip to Texas for this group of guys back in the spring. “We got all the way to Texas and our Sprinter decided to lay down on us. I had to find a way to get us to our dates by whatever means possible. So three full grown men piled into a U-Haul truck and drove to our next date,” Brad says with a laugh. “Looking back, it’s comical to me, although at the time, it definitely was not!” Mercy’s Well just celebrated 15 years of music by releasing a project with a compilation of fan favorites. Thanks To You: Fifteen Years of Making Memories and
Music consists of songs like “More Like Jesus, Less Like Me,” the never-released radio cut of “I’ll See You Soon,” and a remake of the trio’s most requested song, “Nothing But the Blood (Still Saves the Lost).” Also, the project includes three brand new songs with the vocals of the newcomer, Jake. They give their kudos to the superb producer and vocal arranger, Donna King. To order this new project, or any of the trio’s other music, visit www.mercyswell.com. You can find their tour schedule on that site as well.
Mercy’s Well is currently preparing for their annual Christmas tour. It will be kicked off by a banquet, which will be held on Friday, November 27 in Asheboro, NC at The Exchange. This is sure to be an exciting evening. So if you are close to that area, do not hesitate to call and make your reservations. The guys would love to sing you into the Christmas spirit.
Water is Key to Faster Fat Loss
By Laurette Willis, CHC
Water seems to be the single most important catalyst in weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight – and it’s definitely a Penny Pinching favorite! Decreasing water intake actually causes fat deposits to increase, while increasing water intake can reduce fat deposits. Why? The kidneys need water to function properly. When they are not receiving sufficient water, they’re not operating at full capacity and some of the load is managed by the liver. One of the liver’s many functions is to metabolize stored fat into energy, but if it’s doing some of the work of the kidneys it’s not able to function at maximum capacity. Result? More fat is stored by the body instead of metabolized. Did you know that sometimes you only think you’re hungry? You may actually be thirsty. I call it “mouth hunger.” You know that sensation you have when you want something to eat, but the desire isn’t coming from your stomach? Perhaps it’s a taste in your mouth you want to change and you know that eating a particular snack will change it. Next time that happens, drink water instead (not soda pop, juice, coffee or tea). People who are grazers or all-day snackers will lose weight if they drink water when they experience mouth hunger instead of eating. Many women have told me they are rarely thirsty. Our bodies can become imbalanced from eating food when we’re really thirsty or drinking caffeinated soda, coffee or tea, which further dehydrate the body. These physical imbalances can cause us to lose our natural thirst for water. Water Retention Woes
What about water retention (edema)? Many women are concerned that drinking water will aggravate bloating and swollen ankles. Actually, the opposite is true. The best treatment for fluid retention is drinking sufficient quantities of water. Seems contrary, doesn’t it? It’s comparable to what happens if we follow an extreme diet. When we don’t eat sufficient quantities of food every few hours, the body perceives starvation, lowers metabolism to burn fewer calories and hoards fat. Similarly, when the body isn’t receiving enough water, it perceives this as a threat to survival. It holds on to as much water as it can and stores it in spaces outside the cells. This results in swollen feet, ankles and hands. Diuretics only worsen the condition. Stored water may be forced out for a time (along with nutrients the body needs), but the body will replace the water lost as soon as soon as it can. Swelling returns, so diuretics are taken again and the cycle is perpetuated. If edema is a problem for you, first try decreasing salt and caffeine intake and increasing the amount of water you drink. What is a sufficient amount of water? “Does iced tea count?” “What about juice, coffee or diet soda?” Even though there is water in juice and man-made beverages, water is the only liquid which does not require the body to work to process it. Soft drinks have chemicals and colorings that have to be removed, and caffeinated beverages actually dehydrate the body, removing more water than the beverage contains. Most nutrition experts agree that 64 ounces (eight, eightounce glasses) of water each day is adequate for most
fluid retention and mysterious weight gain. Solution? Increase your water intake again back to 64 or more ounces per day. Simple – and so thrifty, too!
people. If you’re overweight, one eight-ounce glass is recommended for each additional 25 pounds of body weight. Want an easier way to remember? Take your weight and divide it by two. Drink that number in ounces of water each day. For example if you weigh 160 pounds, half that number is 80. Drink 80 ounces of water every day (or ten eight-ounce glasses).
Water of Life – the REAL thing! Jesus said to the woman at the well who was looking to satisfy a thirst that no one on this earth could ever satisfy: “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:13, 14).
Unfortunately, our water supply is tainted by chemicals and waste matter, even in the purest of settings. Today water must be filtered, so purchase a good water filtration system (preferably steam distilled) or buy bottled water. Don’t like the taste of water? Filtration systems can do wonders, but until you can get one, refrigerating water improves the taste. Also try a squeeze of lemon, or two teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of honey.
Jesus is the only One who can give us living water. He alone can quench your every thirst and satisfy every hunger. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you as the source of true life today.
Increase the amount of water you drink when exercising, in warm weather, or if working outdoors. Cold water appears to be absorbed by the body more quickly and may even help burn more calories (we like that!).

Smoky Mountain Style: A Look at
The Legendary Inspirations
By Justin Gilmore
There is nothing like the twangy style and sound of the Smoky Mountains’ most popular quartet, the Inspirations. This style has set them apart from the rest and made them a unique fixture of Southern Gospel Music for 51 years. In 1964, a chemistry teacher from Bryson City, NC, and former member of the Kingsmen by the name of Martin Cook gathered a group of his students to form the beloved Inspirations. This early lineup included: Archie Watkins (Tenor), Ronnie Hutchins (Lead), Jack Laws (Baritone) and Dean Robinson (Bass). Inspired by groups such as the Suwannee River Boys, the Oak Ridge Boys, and the Kingsmen, the group became more solidified and began full time ministry in 1969 during which time they began hosting the Singing In The Smokies event. The quartet experienced some changes in personnel early in their career as well, including the additions of Troy Burns and Eddie Dietz, replacing Dean Robinson and Jack Laws in
the bass and baritone positions respectively. These were brief tenures as Eddie Dietz moved to lead and Burns moved to bass guitar. At this time, Marlin Shubert became the new bass singer and Laws once again sang baritone. The group experienced great success in the early 1970’s with several number one songs including “Jesus Is Coming Soon,” “Touring That City,” “When I Wake Up To Sleep No More,” and “Jesus Is Mine.” Each song remained a chart topper for several months at a time. Beginning in 1972, the group’s sound was defined by the soaring tenor of Archie Watkins and the booming bass voice of Mike Holcomb. Over the years, many great vocalists have been members of this great traditional group including Matt Dibler, Melton Campbell, Dallas Rogers, Jodi Hosterman, Jon Epley, and David Ragan. Each lineup of this legendary group has remained true to the call and maintains the traditional smoky mountain sound.
Now in their 51st year, the quartet continues to delight audiences all over the country making memories that will last a lifetime. Establishing their annual homecoming event is a major highlight for the group, Tim Gardner states, “The Singing In The Smokies would be our top accomplishment. Next year (2016) will be its 50th year!” This is an incredible testament to the group’s success. Another incredible feat is: “…having more songs than any group on Singing News Magazine (the printed voice of Southern Gospel Music) Radio Charts.” Gardner says, “Three [songs] were voted Song of The Year: ‘Jesus Is Coming Soon’ (also called the Song of the Twentieth Century by many Southern Gospel historians and other knowledgeable analysts), ‘Touring That City’ and ‘Jesus Is Mine.’”
The current lineup of the group is no different. Group assistant Tim Gardner says: “Martin Cook has been a constant member of the Inspirations since our inception in 1964. Besides being its pianist in a full, live band, he is the group’s manager and emcee. He has his own piano-playing style that features a steady rhythm and distinctive intros and runs. He is Southern Gospel music’s longevity leader in all three capacities.” In his second tenure with the group is Matt Dibler, whose powerful lead voice is a vital part of the group’s unique sound. Gardner praises the lead singer for his good range and consistent vocal quality. Melton Campbell has also rejoined the group and is now in his third tenure with the group. Gardner also praises Campbell for his “hickory-rich baritone singing voice.” Tenor Harold Reed comes to the Inspirations from his recent tenure with the Diplomats Quartet. Reed is also well known as a former member of the Florida Boys, The Dixie Melody Boys, and the legendary Kingsmen. His incredible range and ultra-high tenor voice is an audience favorite. Rounding out the vocals for the quartet is former Diplomats’ bass singer Joe Brown. Brown recently joined the group following the departure of Jon Epley. Brown’s deep, smooth bass voice delights audiences all over the country. Martin Cook leads the live band consisting of his son Myron Cook on the upright bass, and Luke Vaught on steel and rhythm guitar. Gardner says this about the band: “Luke Vaught is one of SGM’s finest and most versatile musicians. You name the musical instrument and he can play it! And Myron Cook is known for providing a dependable and perfect beat on the upright bass guitar.” This exciting lineup hopes to continue this incredible journey.
The Inspirations also count the following as major highlights in their long career: appearing on the Gospel Singing Jubilee TV program for 12 years and being featured on a seven-minute segment on the CBS Evening News with famed broadcaster Roger Mudd. Millions of people tuned in to watch the group perform on both TV appearances. It is these experiences that put their career into perspective. The quartet stays grounded in their faith and uses their platform to spread God’s Word to all. The Inspirations continue to produce quality recordings that spread the Word of God to the world. Their latest record joins the incredible discography of this solid group. Gardner states, “It is entitled, Pray For Me, and should be released in October. It contains a wide collection of songs, ranging from straight-ahead driving quartet songs to unique compositions to mountain-type harmony numbers that perfectly fit the Inspirations’ style. It also includes some songs we have previously recorded such as ‘Daniel Prayed’ and ‘Beulah Land.’” This will be the first recording featuring the new lineup of the quartet as well. This beloved quartet has achieved great success in their lengthy career as evidenced by their many hit songs and other accolades. The group has received several Singing News Fan Awards including six for Favorite Group (1972, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978), two for Favorite Traditional Male Quartet (2005 and 2006, which they shared with Ernie Haase and Signature Sound), Album of the Year (2004 - The Journey Ahead) and five for Song Of The Year (1974 – Touring That City, 1976 - Jesus Is Mine, 2002 I’ll Not Turn My Back On Him Now, 2003 - We Need To Thank God, and 2007 - I Have Not Forgotten). Gardner adds, “They have also received and been nominated for many other awards, honors and distinctions, as a group, a band and individual singers and musicians.” Now in 2015, The Inspirations show no signs of slowing down and plan on continuing to spread the Gospel through song. They are currently in the studio recording a brand new CD with their exciting new lineup. The future is look-
ing bright for this legendary group. Gardner gives a glimpse of what to expect in the future: “To keep on keeping on, so to speak, singing to as many people as possible with our ultimate desire to bless and inspire all who hear us sing, while hopefully pointing lost people to Christ through our songs and in the Christian and gentlemanly manner we present ourselves. Inspirations fans and Gospel music lovers can also look forward to a new recording of strictly old, classic hymns in the near future.” Martin Cook and the rest of the Inspirations haven’t let their success distract them from their calling. The group holds true to their mission statement: “Originating in the heart of God, developed in His Word and Will, the Inspirations continue to spread the Gospel through their music with enthusiasm, vigor and an unyielding dedication as they have since their formation.” This blessed quartet has dedicated their lives to serving Christ all over the country, while even hosting tours to Europe, the Bahamas and the Holy Land. The Inspirations have remained at the forefront of Southern Gospel Music and continue to experience great success. Their unmistakable sound and God’s blessings have made them one of the most beloved quartets in Gospel music history.

YOUNGErPERSPECTIVE Bryce Free
BY ERIN STEVENS A word from the writer… If you have followed Gospel music for any length of time, then you would know that the name Brian Free is at the top of the list of voices that have helped define our industry. Along with being one of the most awarded tenors, Brian has also successfully passed along his love of music to his two sons. This month’s article is all about his creatively thriving 23 year old, Bryce. From graphic design to songwriting, videography, and everything in between, he certainly can do it all! Ever wanted to find out more about Brian Free and Assurance (or BFA)’s bright-minded roadie? Wonder no more. Grab the mic, my friend… Erin: What was it like growing up with your dad being such a prominent figure in Gospel music? Bryce: When I was younger, I don’t really think I understood just how much my dad had accomplished in Gospel music. For me, it was always just fun to go on the road and spend time with my dad and brother Ricky, and hang out with friends. As I got older, I started to travel a lot more, and got involved in the group myself, quickly realizing the mark that my dad has left on Gospel music and the things he continues to accomplish. Seeing how he treats people, how he is unwavering in his beliefs and witnessing to people, and how amazing a singer he truly is…he’ll never know just how much of an influence he has been and always will be in my life. Being on the road with my dad is some of my best memories of my life. Erin: What was your inspiration for getting involved with videography? How did Paper Taxi Media come into being? Bryce: It all started on the road with BFA about eight years ago. The guys have always been so funny and stuff is always happening, and I knew that people needed to see this, so I started videoing all the time and started a video blog for the group that I still do today. That same year, I started experimenting with graphic design as well, and the next thing I
knew, I was doing all of the graphic design for BFA (album layouts, shirts, posters, etc), and then that led me to doing design and video work for so many other great artists. I’ve done design work for BFA, The Perrys, Madison and Shannon, The Parachute Parade, CentricWorship, Karen Peck and New River, Jason Lovins Band, Ivey Redding, Shane Dunlap, as well as other artists. I’ve also had the privilege to do music videos, behind the scenes studio videos, and EPKs for BFA, Joseph Habedank,
ICascade Microphones, Lindsay Huggins, Bev McCann and
Friends, Jim Sheldon The Positive Cowboy, and others. Most recently, I produced, directed, filmed, and edited a full-length documentary film for BFA that was released back in April of this year on DVD and Blu-Ray. It took over three months to film and edit the documentary, and I couldn’t be more proud of it. I always say that I’m a musician first, but videography, photography, and graphic design have quickly become some of my biggest passions. It’s been very gratifying to get to combine my love of music with my love of videography and design.
tunity for me to merge my video and design work with the band, which again would be a dream come true. After seeing the impact that my father’s music has on people, I know that I want to do exactly that with my life as well. It’s what I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember. Erin: If I recall, your family is big into Disney World (as is
Erin: In your spare time, how often do you hop on the BFA bus for the weekend? Bryce: I try to travel as much as I possibly can. Typically, I’m on the road almost full-time, but there have been times where I’ve had a project to film another artist, so I will miss a few weekends to work on that, or catch up on editing/ designing some new BFA projects. But I love road life so much. It’s all I’ve ever known! Erin: I remember that you recently graduated from college. Where did you attend and what did you major in? Bryce: I graduated from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee in May 2014. My major was Music Business Production, which is basically a double major combining Business Administration and Audio Engineering. I loved every minute that I was at Belmont, and I couldn’t ever imagine going anywhere else. We also have a pretty killer basketball team too.... go Bruins! Erin: Where do you see yourself in five years? What are your goals and dreams for the future? Bryce: I would love to be settled down in Nashville, and being able to do both video/design work, as well as pursue my band The Parachute Parade. I’ve always wanted to fulfill my dreams of traveling in a band with my best friends and I would love nothing more. That would also present the oppor-
mine). List the four parks in your personal preference order. Bryce: We LOVE Disney World! I’m pretty sure that I’ve been about 19 to 20 times in my life, and it never gets old, ever. My preference in parks, from favorite to least favorite is pretty difficult, but I’d have to say that my favorite is Hollywood Studios, then Epcot, Magic Kingdom, and then Animal Kingdom. But Disney World will always be my favorite vacation spot. Erin: And while we’re on the Disney topic, what is your favorite attraction and food choice at each park? Bryce: Hmmm, this is going to be difficult, because I have a few rides that are definitely tied as my favorites. So here are my favorites at the moment, which could change. Magic Kingdom: favorite ride - Space Mountain, favorite food - Pinocchio Village Haus. Hollywood Studios: favorite ride - A tie between Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster and The Tower Of Terror, favorite food - Pizza Planet. Epcot: favorite ride - Test Track, favorite food - German Biergarten Restaurant. Animal Kingdom: favorite ride - Expedition Everest, favorite food Restaurantosaurus. Erin: When did you start playing guitar and how long have you been writing songs? Bryce: I started playing guitar when I was 11 years old. My first instrument was actually drums when I was really little, but my brother Ricky already had that covered, so I chose another instrument. I wrote my first song when I was 12 years old and I just couldn’t stop. The art of writing a truly great song is something that has always amazed me and I’m constantly striving to try and understand it more and more all the time. I’ll never stop writing, ever.
Erin: Is there anything the fans might be surprised to learn about Bryce Free? Bryce: I love to play golf and go bowling, and I have quite a large vinyl record collection. I started collecting when I was about 12 or 13, and I haven’t stopped since. I also love hot foods and hot sauces. I typically have at least three different types of hot sauce with me on the road at all times and I put it on everything. Just ask Dad and the guys. Erin: If you were given the opportunity to share your faith, what main points would you want someone to know about your relationship with Christ? Bryce: My faith is everything. God is the reason that I - or anyone - has any ability to do anything at all. I would want people to know that if you step out of your comfort zone and do what you feel God has called you to do, He will make it happen and open doors for you. It will be in His timing, but it will all eventually fall into place. With everything that is happening in the world and in our country today, Christians need to be reminded that they should never be ashamed of what they believe and what God’s Word tells us as solid truth and fact. It’s not up to us to interpret or use as we need, we are to change ourselves and conform ourselves to what It says. It’s not what we think or feel; it’s what God says. The last thing I would tell people is that you never know who is watching you or looking up to you. Make every action and word count, do everything with love and passion, and be an
example for people. You could witness to someone without ever uttering the name of Christ at all. Just let them see Him in you, and live it. The spotlight is on everyone all the time, so step up and make a difference in someone’s life. Closing words from the writer… Did you read that last line? If you were just skimming, allow me to bring it to your attention one more time: “The spotlight is on everyone all the time, so step up and make a difference in someone’s life.” I believe so often people are putting others on a pedestal thinking, “Oh, she’s far better than me!” “Folks are bound to listen to him.” “What could I possibly say to change someone’s life?” “I’m too young.” “I’m too old.” “God can’t use someone like me.” Let’s wake up and realize that each and every one of us has a voice to be heard, a testimony to share, and a story to tell. Make it your mission as school and work stresses are abounding once again, not to forget who YOU are in Christ and how mightily He wants to use you, through the giftings and talents with which He’s blessed you. So get out there and make today your day! Until next month, Scoops fans… And that’s my take on it. DJ Spotlight John Abney
This month we are shining the Spotlight on John Abney from Heflin, Alabama. John works at WPIL FM 91.7. I asked John a few questions and here’s what he had to say.
back my life, but He also gave me the opportunity to sing for Him. I do so whenever and wherever I can. I have also been working as the song leader at the church I attend.
Vonda: What do you do at WPIL? John: I am the new Operations Manager at WPIL FM 91.7 radio station.
Vonda: Where is your favorite vacation spot? John: My most favorite place I have ever vacationed was at the Grand Canyon. I love the mountains. They are greater there than anywhere else I have been, though I still like to visit Tennessee sometimes.
Vonda: Can you please share your testimony with us? John: In 2007 a few months after my son was born, I had a stroke. I was at work driving a delivery truck. The stroke was only recognizable at that time by my complete loss of hearing in my right ear. I was eventually put in the hospital in Rome, GA where they found blockages in my heart. Because of a high clotting factor in my blood, stents were out of the question so I was scheduled for a bypass. The doctors wanted me to go home and get better from the stroke before I could have the bypass because they feared that if I had the bypass then, it would trigger another stroke. They sent me home and three days later I had a heart attack so they could not wait. I had another stroke while under and woke up, unable to swallow, and not being able to talk above a whisper. One of my vocal cords had been paralyzed and my ability to swallow without choking had been affected. I had to learn to talk, and eat again. Rehabilitation was hard but I learned to talk and eat and eventually The Lord gave me back what I most enjoyed, to be able to sing. Vonda: A little birdie told us that you sing. Is that true? John: Yes it is. Before I had the strokes, I sang in karaoke bars and restaurants and sang worldly songs, but since the stroke, not only has the Lord Jesus given me
Vonda: Tell us about something great that has happened at WPIL? John: My greatest day was my first day working at WPIL 91.7FM. I had played as a child, recording a local radio station and playing it back and acting like I was the DJ announcing the songs. The Lord gave me the desires of my heart when I was able to work for Him in the job I loved. Thank you so much to John Abney, the brand new operations manager at WPIL in Heflin, Alabama. Be sure to look up WPIL on the web. You might just hear Vonda Easley on there as well! Written By Vonda Easley
mylon Hayes Family By Bethany Cook
I’ve always been amazed at the tight harmony of families that grace the stage together night after night across the country, having grown up in a singing family myself. When I hear of the name Mylon Hayes Family I can’t help but go back in time and think back to when I was just a little girl sitting, listening and watching as Howard and Lucy stood and sang with their family. While the faces on stage may have changed, there are some great similarities between the original Hayes Family and the Mylon Hayes Family. Mylon now has stepped into the role of head of the group, much like his father, Howard. His years of experience on the road and in the studio are so valuable to the group. Mylon, originally from Boone, NC, felt the call on his life to serve the Lord through this music very early on. When he met Wendy, originally from Morganton, NC, and married her in 1995, they knew this was what the Lord wanted them to do. Now seeing their teenage children serve alongside of them and feel that call too is such a blessing to them. The family currently resides in Hudson, NC.
Something similar to the original group is that all the kids play the piano, so they are able to have them play while they sing or they can duel up like their aunts did on the piano! One difference is that they homeschool the kids which gives flexibility to travel anywhere the Lord opens the door at any time of the year. While there may be a few things that have changed through the years, their number one goal is still to see people saved, and to encourage the church, truly hoping that people will not see them but the message they bring, which is that Jesus saves and HE can change your life. The Mylon Hayes family has quickly become a favorite among Southern Gospel music listeners, and in 2014 they were voted Favorite New Mixed Group in the Singing News fan awards. While they have become much loved in many households, if you ask them about it, they will tell you their goal is to tell others about this wonderful Savior named Jesus Christ. They would love to see more lives changed, revival sweep through our nation and help spark a flame in God’s people to stand up for truth in these days of such darkness. Their family
goal is to faithfully use the talents the Lord has given and the opportunities He has put before them. They currently have a song out to radio entitled, “The Sweetest Words He Ever Said,” and their new album, Devoted, is now available. Now let’s meet the family. Mylon is father, husband, driver, bass player and does more than could be named for the group. He works in the studio for a lot for other groups playing bass, producing, background vocals and vocal editing. Mylon’s fun fact is that he loves the Andy Griffith show and can quote many of the lines. He is really very funny! Wendy is mom, wife, does most of the office work and manages the product table. Wendy’s fun fact: she likes to fish, decorate and loves having friends over. Christmas is her favorite time of the year! The twins, Conner and Bailey, both load in the sound equipment, set it up and tear it down. They laugh saying that Dad (Mylon), after all these years of doing the equipment, has finally got some help. Maybe one day soon they can help more with the driving. Conner’s and Bailey’s fun facts: both boys enjoy fishing, love to play baseball, piano, drums and the bass. They enjoy mowing the yard and trying to make it look like patterns on a baseball field. One small difference in what they enjoy
is their taste in trucks. Bailey loves Toyota Tacoma trucks while Conner is more of a big Ford truck man. Kennedy is the product table girl and a big help to her mom getting things ready to go each week. She is the family’s sparkle because she’s funny and full of life. Kennedy’s fun fact: she plays piano, and took ballet for eight years. She enjoys any kinds of crafts and drawing and loves to shop and decorate. Another fun fact about the kids is that all three, Conner, Bailey and Kennedy, go to music/singing school each summer for two weeks. It is an old fashioned shaped note music school. There are many things that bring this family close. Besides their love of music, they all love Japanese food, baseball games and spur-of-the-moment trips. They have a family dog, Cookie, and they say he is the sweetest dog around. They also enjoy getting together and going out to eat with friends. While the men in the house love old trucks, the women love to go shopping. The family bond seems to be very strong between parents and children. They don’t have cable/satellite TV in the home, so their days off mean spending a lot of time on music and just being together. They all love Christmastime and usually put the tree up early and take it down late. Wendy says, “We feel you should never rush
this wonderful time of the year!” While they enjoy their time with family and friends, the Hayes family loves to travel. It’s something they have just always done. They love the opportunity to go and do what they love. They feel it’s even more special that they all get to be together. They also enjoy not rushing
their trips while they are on the road. Traveling as a family, they are able to make fun stops along the way. When asked about their favorite places to travel, Wendy says, “We feel it has been an honor to get to sing at NQC and to have been a part of the Gospel Music Hymn Sing. These are just a few of the favorite things we have done but the Lord has blessed us to get to go to so many churches all over this great country and meet some of the most precious people! It’s really about the people and giving them the message in song; all the while, praying that God will continue to use common people like us.” I truly believe that this family will continue to be around for quite a long time. Their humble spirit and amazing talents have kept the family tradition going strong, and it is very clear that Mylon and Wendy are raising up a generation to continue the family name. The next time Mylon and his family are around your area, be sure to go enjoy the sweet family harmony, and meet this amazing family. You will not be disappointed
in the talent, friendliness or the humbleness in this family. Check out their website at www.themylonhayesfamily.com for more information on their tour schedule and music.

High Notes By Kelly Nelon Clark
Have you ever felt like your life is a whirlwind and sometimes spinning out of control? You are so busy with doing and going that there is little or no time left for you and God. You work so hard to provide for your family and forget who is really the provider. Days turn into weeks and then months and you feel so removed from God. You’ve carved out time for everything else except the One who really matters. The One who gently calls our name. He never screams or yells to get our attention but speaks with love. When we allow God to be a part of who we are, His words bring peace, joy and love into our crazy busy lives. Don’t squeeze Him out of what you do. When circumstances overcome us and we don’t know which way to turn, whom do we call on? I’ve always heard that we have all either just come through a trial or we are headed toward one. We need the One who is stronger than us to guide our steps and lives. When we make Him the first priority in our lives, He puts everything in line for our lives and in balance. Let Him fill you with everything He has for you. His glory will brighten up the whole world around you. The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one be-
ing taught. —Isaiah 50:4

Randall Reviews It -October by Randall Hamm
Welcome into October and another edition of Randall Reviews It. The month of pumpkin is upon us and NQC is just about over, as this issue hits the web. Fall is one of my favorite seasons, along with spring. The beauty of our majestic God is seen in both of these seasons. But, once fall is over, comes the winter. Winter only makes me long for spring, for winter is truly not my friend. But, let’s get on with this month’s reviews. Two relatively new groups The Peyton Sisters and The Goulds and one DJ who ventures onto the other side of the fence--Les Butler--are spotlighted this month.
Amen Like Thunder (Lee Black, Belinda Smith and Kenna Turner West), Where Are The Voices (Amber Maxwell), I Found A Ransom (Dianne Wilkinson), Love Never Ends (Buddy Mullins) The Goulds, a family trio based out of the Joplin Missouri area have returned with a new release Where Are The Voices. I first became acquainted with the Goulds in 2013 at NQC when they performed at one of the many showcases, and was just taken aback at their sound. They won their showcase and performed on Main Stage that year. I had an opportunity to meet them at a Absolutely Gospel Music meet and greet arranged for radio with other artists. Little did I know, I was to give them their first radio interview and liners. I love finding new talent and especially airing new talent on my radio program every Sunday. They were so sincere, and I really got to know them at last year’s NQC, by hanging out with them at their booth for most of the week. This CD is their fourth, which also includes a Christmas CD. Many in the industry are taking note, due to their unmistakable sound and harmonies. Their last CD Love Beyond Measure included their first Top 80 SN Chart song “One Soul” which made it to #72 in November of 2014.
The Goulds Where Are The Voices 2015 Independent Brady House - Spring Hill Tennessee and Sunset Blvd Studios, Franklin Tennessee Producer: Jim Brady Group Members: Tim, Kelsey and Christa Gould Songs: Jesus Speaking Peace (Melissa Brady, Rebecca Peck, Niles Borop), He Promised Me (John Robinson), There Is A Fountain (Jim Brady), Cool Water (Jim Brady), The Tears Fall (Chris Allman), The Other Miracles (Rodney Griffin),
This CD contains 10 cuts, including their first single release “Jesus Speaking Peace,” a great song from the pen of Melissa Brady, Rebecca Peck and Niles Borop. Wonderful production by Jim Brady and some vocal arrangement help by Trey Ivey make this their best CD yet. This group is one to watch and one of those who one day will be a regular on the national scene of Gospel. The strongest song on the CD is “Love Never Ends,” a great story song from the pen of Buddy Mullins which concludes the CD. This melody is a love song between a daughter and her dad with the verses being sung as a little girl, a soon to be bride and a dying dad. “…Love never ends, When the
dark of night surrounds, It’s the light that burns within, Love Never Ends, When the day has come and gone, And it’s time for moving on, Love Never Ends.” If you are looking for something new and fresh, the Goulds will fit that bill and more. make it their own. Joyce Martin steps in to help with the girls’ version of “The Promise.” One of my favorite songs is “He Walked The Path,” Country-themed and dealing with consequences and the father having to pay the consequences for what was done. You know our Heavenly Father had to pay the consequences for our sin. He paid the price with his Son, who bore those sins for us and carried that shame. Other a cappella selections include, “How Great Thou Art,” “He Touched Me,” “It Is Well” and “Nothing But The Blood.” Overall, it’s a wonderful first effort from Riley and Rachael, who in a few years, with their maturing voices, may be another sister act to rival the Ruppes. Time will tell, but in the meantime, enjoy this first well done CD by the Peyton Sisters. By the way they are nominated in the SGN Scoops Diamond Awards for the Duet of the Year. Good luck ladies. Awards will handed out at the Awards Ceremonies held as part of the Creekside Gospel Convention, Nov 2nd through 5th at Smoky Mountain Convention Center in Pigeon Forge Tennessee.
Peyton Sisters Footprints Of Jesus 2015 Independent Studios: Daywind – Hendersonville Tennessee Producer: Joyce Martin Sanders Group Members: Riley and Rachael Peyton Songs: Footprints Of Jesus; Don’t Worry Bout The Waves; In Christ Alone; Nothing But The Blood; He Walked The Path; He Touched Me; The Promise; God Is Faithful; How Great Thou Art; Higher Ground; I Am The Way; It Is Well; The Road To Jesus
Here is a duo of sisters Riley and Rachael Peyton, age 12 and 13 based out of Southern Illinois and starting to make a name for themselves. The call themselves the Peyton Sisters and with a little help from Joyce Martin Sanders, have their first CD entitled Footprints Of Jesus. Where these young ladies excel, is when they sing a cappella, where their voices can shine. Both began performing when they were five and six years old and are currently taking vocal lessons from Joyce Martin Sanders. This CD contains 13 cuts, ranging from hymns of the church to favorites from the Martins, Bill Gaither and Talleys catalog. The CD begins with the girls’ version of “Footprints of Jesus,” a cappella style and with their vocal twist, they

Les Butler Revival Favorites 2015 Butler Music Studios: Back Porch Studios and the Family Room Producer: Les and Matt Butler Lovely Name Of Jesus (Squire Parsons); I Can’t Even Walk (Colbert and Joyce Croft); He Gave Me The Well (Rodney Griffin); Beulah Land (Squire Parsons); Keep On The Firing Line (Otis McCoy); The Lord Still Lives In This Old House (Bill Burns); I Sing Because (Squire Parsons); Mercy Walked In (Gordon Mote, Chaz Bosarge, Phil Johnson); I
Believe He’s Coming Back (Rusty Goodman); Thank You Lord For Your Blessing On Me (James, Ed and Russell Easter) Les Butler, singer? Words that don’t seem to go together. But once I received a copy of this CD, I found out that they do. Many of us know Les as a host of The Old Country Church, and Front Porch Fellowship, or as TV Host, or as a writer for Singing News. But just recently, he announced a new venture, a personal preaching and singing ministry. He left Singing News last December and more recently left Solid Gospel Radio. He also is owner of Family Music and Butler Music, who produce and promote such artists as: The Williamsons, Canton Junction, and others. Les’ first CD is entitled Revival Favorites. While there are no new songs, there are songs of conviction that will make you have revival. Les’ warm baritone resonates on such classics as “The Lovely Name of Jesus,” “Beulah Land” and “I Sing Because,” giving them his personal touch and making them come alive again. One of my favorite songs has always been JD Sumners’ rendition of “The Lord Still Lives In This Old House.” Les does a wonderful job of bringing that song back and truly making it his own. One of the highlights of the CD is James Easter joining Les on “Thank You Lord (For Your Blessings On Me).” A special treat is a track featuring James Easter reminiscing on how “Thank You Lord” came to be. Absolutely wonderful. A CD that you can put on and just sing along with and enjoy, that’s Revival Favorites, one of my Top 10 CDs of the year. Strongest songs: The Lovely Name Of Jesus, The Lord Still Lives In This Old House and He Gave Me The Well. Reflections with “Do you have a light?”
No, I am not talking about what people on the streets say when they are bumming a cigarette off someone; I am asking you if YOU have a light, a flame, burning inside of you? As I hear the latest news and read the biggest headlines, it is ever more apparent to me that this world has become a dark place-- and it’s going to get darker. We need a light, HIS light, to shine into the dark corners of the earth. The impending darkness to come is foretold in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 24. While sitting on the Mount of Olives (a beautiful place-- I’ve been there), the disciples came to Jesus and asked Him: What will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered: “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled;
for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places… And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another... And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” Throughout these 14 verses, Jesus warned his followers that these things “must come to pass” but that those who endure will be saved. Jesus says further: “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace” (John 16:13). We are to have peace in the midst of the storm, friends. Jesus will never leave us nor forsake us (Heb 13:5), despite the fact that the darkest hour has not yet come.
While this may not sound like the Good News of the Gospel, we are to take comfort in knowing that during this time, the gospel of Jesus Christ is being preached to all nations, whether from media outlets, newspapers, word of mouth, television, social media and even mainstream Hollywood movies. Most anyone utilizing social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) knows that it can be a very effective means for reaching out to a lot of people quickly; so, being in ministry, I have all of those accounts. However, they can also be used for highly destructive purposes, too. Just read some of the posts surrounding trending topics (i.e. gender neutralization, Supreme Court legalization of nontraditional marriages, black market organ harvesting and so forth). It’s disheartening to see who’s feuding with who, who’s shaming who, who’s bullying who, who’s ridiculing and backbiting another—and often, it’s Christians against Christians. This should not be so. We, as believers in Christ, should not be evoking humiliation and embarrassment of our faith online or in any other public forum, and we certainly should not be degrading or insulting others who lack Biblical understanding and wisdom. There’s a place on Facebook where you can define what your political beliefs are, whether Republican, or Democrat, or other. For mine, I simply put: “I hope my life demonstrate my beliefs.” Friends, study it out, every political party and every political candidate is flawed. So let us get off our high horse - or donkey or elephant - and let us be identified as a believer in Christ—a true follower. Doesn’t the Bible say: “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). It doesn’t say they will know you are my disciples by screaming your head off at someone on Facebook and calling them profane names-- or by picking up mud and hurling it up in the air and slinging it at them. In fact, that will only make the world a messier, darker place. Yes, stand up for and support those who support the cause of Christ, but make sure YOU are representing Christ in the process. Proverbs 16:24 tell us, “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.” My response on social media to all the darkness that is going on in the world was simply this quote of my own: “Darkness will only grow darker, if the light doesn’t shine brighter.” Darkness is dark. Sinners sin, that’s what they do. Is this surprising? Is this anything new?
And may I remind you, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Rom 8:23). In Matthew 23: 29-30, Jesus warns: “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven… and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” Darkness is coming. It is visible. It is palpable. But, we don’t have to contribute to it. Jesus said, “As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the World.” (John 9:5). Ah, there’s the problem: Jesus was crucified as punishment for our sins, was buried and rose from the dead on the third day. He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19). So, He’s no longer here, in the world, and that’s why there is so much darkness, right? No, He is still here in this world; He is alive and well and He lives inside of you (John 15:4, 2 Cor 4:6-7, Gal 2:20, Col 1:27). The “Light of the World” is in YOU. You are to be a light to the world. One little flame of light can dispel an entire room of darkness. You are to carry forth His light to the dark places.
Jesus tells us in Matthew 5: 14-16, “You are the light of the world… let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” You do not light a lamp only to put it under a basket where it is hidden. No! You put it on a lampstand so it gives light to all who are in darkness.
Don’t let your flame grow dim; it’s time for the real Christians to please stand up…and shine!

Jim Sheldon By Tina Wakefield Positive is a word used to describe something wonderful, uplifting, and good. What a word! Iif we ever needed positive influences in our world it is now. Gospel Music has the great honor of injecting the positive message of a loving Savior with open arms ready to welcome His children to a place of love and security. There is no other artist out there that can deliver this message of hope in quite the style that Jim Sheldon does. Jim was given the name The Positive Cowboy by Scott Godsey, the producer of the Music City Show, when he
stated, “I have watched you project this positive energy with a smiling face while singing these positive songs everywhere you go!” I agree with Scott, the audiences are feeding on the message of Jim Sheldon, The Positive Cowboy. Jim says, “People know and love the old hymns and songs I sing each week, which has taken this ministry to a level I never dreamed possible. The Spirit of God draws people at services and concerts to worship, and this gives me the freedom to tell my story through my original songs every time!”
states, “We totally surrendered our lives to Jesus!” Jim Sheldon has been singing gospel music for 23 years now and loves every minute of it. He says that his desire to minister in song was so great throughout the years that he sought out jobs that would not interfere with this calling. Jim has been employed as a quick-oilchange attendant, a cook on the graveyard shift and a dishwasher during the day at another location, a breakfast cook and a voice coach, with a few more not listed. He was holding down these jobs to provide an income, all the while singing lead, baritone, or bass over the years with three mixed quartets, four male quartets, one mixed trio, and being a soloist for three years. That is a desire to minister in song!
Growing up in New Orleans, Jim was engulfed in a sea of cultures and musical styles, so it is no surprise that music became a part of his life. Jim says that he has always loved music, but chose vocal music as an elective in seventh grade because of, you guessed it, a GIRL. Jim stayed with choir though school and sang his first solo at the end of the year concert in ninth grade. Jim’s love of music created a desire to pursue a career as a pop singer, but due to his records getting lost in the mail and the divorce of his parents, he was not able to afford college on his own to further his musical training. Jim Sheldon in later years was able to attend New Orleans Baptist Seminary and earned an Associate Degree in Church Music. He went on to minister part-time and full-time for over five years in Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Virginia. During this time in Jim’s life, he endured a divorce from his wife and while times have changed now, back then a divorced minister was not well received in ministerial positions. Jim was informed to “...get out of ministry because churches wouldn’t hire a divorced minister.” This realization devastated Jim and he sought out avenues to express his sorrow. The image of Jim Sheldon, Cowboy, was born from this painful time in his life, when he found that Country music was a perfect outlet for expressing the pain he was experiencing in his life. Jim says, “Singing those country songs helped me to cry out the pain and pour all my suffering into every song.” During this painful time God brought a wonderful woman into Jim’s life, his wife Jeanette, and Jim
Jim confided to me that Glen Payne of The Cathedrals once told him, “Remember, God gave the voice and the deep desire to use it! Go serve Jesus with a servant’s heart!” Jim says that right after this he had a revelation from God that poured in his spirit, “In everything you do, put God first; He will direct and crown your efforts with success.” (Paraphrase of Proverbs 3:6)
Almost four years ago, Jim Sheldon felt the call to step out on faith and go tell the story of his life, so he states: “I went back to my roots of singing Country Gospel music. The hats, buckles, and boots are a permanent part of who I am.” Jim didn’t have to find his way alone because God sent Bev McCann and Scott Godsey into his life to provide the guidance he desired to carry out God’s plan for him. Once he connected with Scott and Bev, Jim says that doors began to open and opportunities to minister full time began to come. Jim says that his goals for the future are: “Simply go only through doors God opens and seek real tools to
songs and there will be many more to come. When I asked Jim to expound on his achievements, he would only say, “My greatest pleasure is doing what I get to do, seeing God bring peace, love, forgiveness, healing, and change to people’s lives.”
accomplish this. Going where I’m most needed to share with people hurting now, like I once did.” The Music City Show is a huge success that God has used to help spread the message of The Positive Cowboy. His ministry has grown in ways that he never dreamed, but isn’t that what happens when someone such as Jim has a true servant’s heart to go where God sends them? Jim Sheldon does not measure his success by the awards or charting songs but by the souls and lives that are touched along the way. I will however mention the fact that Jim Sheldon has enjoyed several number one

Wisdom from Wells by Dusty Wells So here I am, sitting in the busy Northwest terminal of the Detroit airport waiting for yet another delayed flight back to my sweet haven of rest, Nashville, my home sweet home. I absolutely love to travel and I am thrilled that my job requires it often. But from time to time the delayed flights can be quite annoying after a grueling week, such as this past few days have been. I have learned (hmmmm…ok…well maybe…just maybe I am still learning…. Lord help me…) though that most always there is a divine purpose for the delay. I strive to always make the best out of the time, often times I will catch up on my reading, studying and writing. This afternoon is one of those days that all of a sudden, I felt such an urgency to just sit down and write from the depth of my heart a simple lesson of life I learned many years ago, but it still is a daily prayer of mine, especially again as of late. I really want you to feel my spirit and catch a glimpse of where I have come from in my own life. As always, my prayer is that those of you that choose
to read these blogs will find some little nugget of hope, a gentle peace, possible reassurance of love and truth, some type of feeling and challenge that will help comfort you as you are continuing to embark on your own journey. You see, for the last several months, I have been working on, writing, meditating, and thinking of different chapters of my journey. Those landmarks of destiny that I have walked through and grown through (oh, the growth part can be so painful, yet so necessary for each and every one of us, no matter how young or old we are) and even at times, those dark valleys that I have stumbled, floundered and fallen down in while wandering the darkness of the deep canyons, I can always see His hand guiding me and nurturing me. It’s through the best and the worst of those times that I am daily becoming the man that God wants me to be. I honestly can look at anyone, and I do mean anyone, and say to them that I would not trade anything for the journey I
have been on. Now, I wish I could take away the pain and the hurt that I have put others through. But I would not be where I am today had I not had to go through what I have went through in my life.
God to either change me, change those ones around me, or let me go. Through the tears and my deep emotional anguish, I began to think of the old song “Whatever It Takes.”
My friends, as hard as that is to grasp, it’s the truth for you and your life as well. We are all dealt a bad hand at times, but we have to pick ourselves up and go on. We have to. We have no choice!
Now I had sung that song for years, and honestly thought that I had applied it to my life when singing it. But those words that Lanny Wolfe had written so eloquently began to simmer deep in my heart. I began to really pray the words to the song. I began to feel conviction like I had not experienced before. I kept singing this song over and over and over again, for what seemed like hours.
Like I say all the time, “Lord, help me become better and not bitter. Change me…change me,” and I can see a couple of you dear ones who I have shared this with, grinning from ear to ear with those wonderful smiles of yours. You have lived some of that with me as of late. I love walking beside you and I recognize the simple fact that God has ordained it, so I will continue embracing and cherishing these growing times with each other. It’s been 25 years ago that I had come to most likely one of the darkest caves of my life. I had made so many absolute crappy choices (oh, I so badly want to write the “s” word, because that is what these choices were). I was at the lowest point, and I was giving up. I would not allow anyone that was around me to say anything to me that was going to change my mind. I was in the midst of sin and I was loving every minute of it. Well, I thought I was. I was being so selfish, prideful and stubborn. I wonder how many of us there are like that even today, as I am reading and writing this? Yeah, I was still putting on the Christian act, going out singing and speaking, working for a Christian company, going to church, putting on all the religious fronts, but my heart and mind had grown so cold, my heart that had once been so tender and sensitive was now calloused and rough, and I was making horrible decisions that were affecting not only me but my precious family as well. I felt hopeless, and I did not see any value in myself. I totally felt so alone and I really believed that my once beloved and respected God must have given up on me and walked away from me. In reality I had walked away from Him. His Word says He will never leave us nor forsake us! I am so humbled and glad that I now am at the point in my life that I embrace those words of truth and I truly understand that concept of His love for not only myself but you as well. That is His amazing grace! There I was in the midst of my despair, I somehow ended up sitting on a park bench all alone. I sat there for what seemed like hours. I was crying, snotting, yelling, begging
I am sure the other people in the park thought I was a total lunatic. What was so amazing, as I began to sing, I also began to repent. I began to look back at those last few months of my life and I was finally grasping and acknowledging the reality of how wrong I was, how I had been so blind, and how many of those around me I was hurting. I knew I had to change. There it was again: Lord change me! There was no doubt in my mind. I needed to reach up and grab that nail-scarred hand that was reaching out for me. The lyrics to the song were giving me such hope and a new awareness of His unconditional love for me. I began to feel Him so close to me again. I could sense His presence that I had run from. He was there with me again; actually He had never left me! Now here it is 20 years later, and the words to this song still ring as true to me today, as they did when I was 17, then when I was 28, and now as I am a very young, hip and cool 48; profound lyrics and haunting melody that still move me, challenge me, motivate me and push me to make “Whatever It Takes,” my daily prayer. Friend, wherever you are on your own journey, whatever questions you may continue to have, maybe you are listening to the wrong voices, maybe you are being stubborn like I was, maybe you just feel like no one is there for you, or they could care less - which I assure you is not the case at all. Please allow me to share the lyrics to the song that helped draw me closer to Him. My prayer is that you will make these words your own personal plea and prayer asking Him to draw you closer to Him and His love. Begin to meditate on the words. Read them closely, and if you know the song, begin to make it your own prayer. Sing it over and over and let it come from the depth of your heart; tell Him “Whatever It Takes.” He is right there with you…He really is! “There’s a voice calling me from an old rugged tree, and it
whispers, draw closer to me. Leave this world far behind, there are new heights to climb, and there’s a new place in Me you will find.” “For whatever it takes to draw closer to You, Lord…. that’s what I’ll be willing to do. I’ll trade sunshine for rain, comfort for pain, that’s what I’ll be willing to do. For whatever it takes for my will to break…then that’s what I’ll be willing to do.” “Take the dearest things to me, if that’s how it must be to draw me closer to thee, Let the disappointments come, lonely days without the sun, If thro’ sorrow more like you I’ll become. Take my houses and land; change my dreams and my plans, for I’m placing my whole life in your hands. And if you call me today to a land far away, Lord I’ll go and your will obey…” “For whatever it takes to draw closer to You, Lord…that’s what I’ll be willing to do. I’ll trade sunshine for rain, comfort for pain, that’s what I’ll be willing to do. For whatever it takes for my will to break…then that’s what I’ll be willing to do.” --“Whatever It Takes.” Words and music by Lanny Wolfe. 1975. Capitol CMG, publisher. Product number MN0061820.
Three Bridges From 1863-1891, a feud began along the border of West Virginia and Kentucky around Tug Fork. The feud was between the West Virginia Hatfields and the Kentucky McCoys. The feud officially ended June 14, 2003 when about 60 descendants from the two sides gathered in Pikeville, Kentucky to sign a truce. Elliott McCoy, an actual descendant of the McCoy family said the hatred and distrust between the families had died long ago. According to the Three Bridges website, Elliott grew up in a musical family and his early influences included his grandparents. Later, when he was 14, the family moved to Ohio where Elliott gave his life to Christ. His career in gospel music covers more than 38 years. He has been featured in National Geographic for singing in front of over 40,000 people at an outdoor concert in West Virginia. In July 2001 Elliott formed the group today known as Three Bridges. During the interview, I posed sev-

eral questions to Elliott about him and the group.
RY: Tell us about the early days of Three Bridges. Elliott: The group was formed in July 2001. On July 4th of that year I heard a young lady at my home church sing a song called “Dear Captain,” and I asked her where she got the song. She said her mom and step-dad co-wrote it. We got permission to record it and started to produce the track in August of that year. When 9/11 happened, I knew God had given us a song for the nation. Chris White and Sonlite Records loved the song and sent it to radio and that started our career as Three Bridges. God has blessed us with great radio success! We have had seven top 10 songs and three number one songs on the national charts: “Cooling Water,” “In The Sky” and “Feel A Little Song Coming On.” RY: How did you come up with the name Three Bridges? Elliott: I like the word “bridge” because I have
“bridged my life to Christ.” I was putting together a trio and my thought was, Three Bridges - three men have bridged their life to Christ and want to be a bridge to Christ for others. RY: At what time in your life did you know you had been called to sing Gospel Music? Elliott: Back in 1969 I was very active in my home church doing everything I could, including leading the worship service, and I felt God’s calling to sing Gospel Music. RY: Who influenced you most musically? Elliott: At an early age, The Everly Brothers; then after I got saved Glen Payne and Duane Allen.
since 2010.
RY: At what time in your life did you know you had been called to sing Gospel music? Shannon: I dreamed of it and knew it was what I wanted to do almost as far back as I can remember, but I didn’t fully embrace it as a calling until I was almost 30 years old. RY: How long have you been singing Gospel music? Shannon: As far back as I can remember! I’ve been singing professionally for almost 20 years and full
RY:: What was your first group? Elliott: I formed my first group in 1970 and we were called The Timesmen.
Every Southern Gospel Group needs a ‘yankee’ among them. Shannon Smith, born in New Albany, Indiana, is the one that fit Three Bridges. In September 2000, Shannon and his wife stepped out into full time ministry. He traveled as a solo artist for two years and in September 2002 he joined The Imperials as their lead singer. Over several years, The Imperials won four Grammy and 13 Dove Awards. Shannon left the Imperials after six years in June 2008 to spend time with his family. They moved to Florida where he served 18 months as worship leader. Shannon says he needed to take time away, but when Elliott asked him to join Three Bridges two years later, he knew through prayer that it was the right decision. Shannon has been with Three Bridges
time 15 years.
RY: What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened on tour? Shannon: One night all three of us were sick and could barely sing. It wasn’t a lot of fun. RY: Where is your favorite vacation spot? Shannon: When I was a kid, we went to a beautiful cabin on a lake in Canada for nine straight summers. I’ve been hoping to go back to a place like that ever since. RY: If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be? Shannon: I guess I would be a few inches taller.
Jeremie Hudson from Decatur, AL fills the tenor spot for Three Bridges. He began singing when he was eight years old, after his father heard Jeremie harmonizing with him. He began a group called Fresh Anointing in 1992. The Imperials brought him on as a tenor in 1999. After nine years, Jeremie left the
Imperials so serve as a Worship Pastor for a year. Then Elliott called him about a position with Three Bridges. Jeremie joined the group in 2010. RY: What is the first thing your children say when you come home off the road? Jeremie: Emma says, “DADDY”! Mike hugs me. Brant
sorta smirks. Not in a mean way. Brant always smirks; it’s how he communicates.
RY: What are your hobbies? Jeremie: Football, basketball, fly fishing, Lord of the Rings, WarHammer. I am a Jock/Nerd. RY: If you could live anywhere besides where you currently live, where would it be? Jeremie: I would love to live on a stream full of trout somewhere in Tennessee.
RY: What living person do you most admire? Jeremie: That’s tough. Both my mom and my dad are just amazing. They both have strong characteristics that I so want in my life.
RY: What is your favorite song? Jeremie: The new rendition of “Welcome To The Jungle,” by Soul’d Out Quartet. Ian’s solo work is second to none.
Three Bridges has performed on TV shows, business conventions, and Gaither videos, as well as in churches and other Gospel concerts. They have been nominated for awards every year and were given the 2012 Special Event Project Of The Year by AGM’s Absolutely Gospel Music Awards. This male trio has seen several of their songs reach the top ten in Southern Gospel music charts, as well as the coveted number one position. Their music has touched lives and hearts across the country. Three Bridges are looking forward to recording a Hymns and Classics project in the next three to six months. You can keep up with them on their website,www.threebridges.net. They are booked by The Becky Simmons Agency.

In Touch Alaska Cruise By Lynn Mills
A gentle stream of water cascaded down the mountain and emptied into the glacier pool. As far as your eye could see…it was so. As the snow on the mountain peaks melted, the descending water created more waterfalls than any human could count. These poured down the mountain sides and contributed to the water that the ms Westerdam glided through in Tracy Arm Fjord. From the steely gray peaks above to the lush green pines and evergreens at their bases, one might be tempted to think that such a paradise couldn’t possibly exist outside of a movie theater. But it does.
It’s called Alaska. Home to glaciers, wildlife, fjords and breathtaking scenery, the Last Frontier is a place that many people only dream of visiting. But the colossal mountain ranges isolate many of Alaska’s port cities and reduce travel to boat and air. What then is the best way to experience the best that Alaska has to offer with hassle-less transportation, lodging and dining? The In Touch Alaska Cruise hosted by Dr. Charles Stanley and Inspiration Tours offers an amazing week of inspirational worship, tasty cuisine and the best of Alaskan scenery all wrapped into one package. This past July, the In Touch Alaska Cruise departed out of Seattle, Washington and sailed to Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay and Victoria, British Columbia (Canada) on a seven-night cruise that would give passengers memories to last a lifetime. After experiencing such a trip first hand, this author is thoroughly convinced that the best way to see multiple historic towns, beautiful scenery and wildlife is on an Alaska cruise and sea days are best spent with In Touch on board. Though cruises are known for elaborate ships, exqui-
it was open each day. In addition to the unique activities on the ms Westerdam, the ports of call were the highlights of the trip. The ship’s first stop was in Alaska’s capital city, Juneau. This city is completely cut off from the rest of the world by the majestic mountain ranges surrounding it – the only way in and out is by air or boat. Perhaps the city’s largest attraction is the Mendenhall Glacier. This glacier is a mile and a half wide and resides next to Nugget Falls, a waterfall that releases so much water it can fill an Olympic size swimming pool every second.
site cuisine and entertainment, when a ministry like In Touch reserves a ship, the week takes on a completely different atmosphere than a regular cruise. What should passengers expect? On this year’s cruise, the mainstay in entertainment was the evening concerts in the Vista Lounge. The first night, each artist was introduced to the audience by singing one song and sharing time with Dr. Stanley as he greeted the passengers. In the evenings that followed, the concerts would feature three artists every night. On sea days, or days when the ship didn’t reach port until afternoon, there would be a worship service in the morning with Andy Stanley, Mike Speck leading the music and one of the artists on board singing two songs. Each of the morning and evening sessions and evening concerts were scheduled twice to accommodate the number of passengers on board. This is where Inspiration Tours really shined. They divided everyone into two groups, Red Badge and Blue Badge; each passenger received a lanyard displaying their name and what color group they were a part of. If you wanted to attend one of the services, you had to attend the one that was assigned to your color group. This guaranteed everyone an opportunity to attend every service. More than that, Inspiration took it a step farther and divided the Red and Blue Badge groups into three more divisions: green, yellow and purple priority. These priority”groups would rotate sessions throughout the cruise and allowed folks with the proper priority color to enter the theater first, giving everyone equal opportunity to sit close to the stage. In addition to the performances on stage, the Red and Blue Badge groups each had a book signing day with Dr. Stanley and opportunities to browse product in the bookstore during the hours
Our second day of experiencing the Inside Passage was cruising Tracy Arm Fjord. The wonders and sights of this journey inspired the opening paragraph of this article. Though there was no port, the captain took us back to Sawyer Island to see the glacier, where we had a special moment of hearing Dr. Stanley read Genesis 1 over the PA system followed by singing “How Great Thou Art,” and then the opportunity to see a piece of the glacier calve right before our eyes. Our next port was Sitka, Alaska, the town with Russian heritage. Here, we walked through Totem Pole Park and toured the Russian Bishop’s House where we learned much about the history of Russia in Alaska. Ketchikan was a day spent meandering the streets, shops and walkways. Down by Creek Street, folks were entertained by a seal that kept popping its head up out of the water. Our final stop was Victoria, British Columbia (Canada.) This port is known for its flowers, historic buildings and British atmosphere. Since we arrived in this port at six o’clock in the evening, we were able to see the famous Parliament Buildings light up with thousands of lights. In Touch Ministries has been cruising to Alaska since the mid-1980’s; their cruise is one of the most top notch, classy and organized events you can ever at-
tend. Though any Alaska cruise would offer an amazing experience and any multi-day event with Dr. Charles Stanley and Andy Stanley would be a life-changing event; when the two are combined, it creates a week that’s unforgettable. From the spiritual refreshment inside the ship to the wonders of God’s creation surrounding it outside, you can’t find another vacation that tops this trip…and you can begin planning your Alaska cruise today!

By Leslie McKay When thinking of music entertainment, most people think of Nashville, Branson, or Pigeon Forge. They probably don’t know anything about entertainment in Bruce, MS. Beginning in 2003, Bruce was the home for the Bollinger Family Theater where they entertained hundreds of people with their Branson-style family friendly variety shows. People came from all across the United States to this small town to enjoy quality entertainment. However, after 10 years the theater closed and shows ended in the town of Bruce, MS. The theater remained empty and vacant until January of this year when Tim and Shenetha Parker bought the theater from Mr. Bollinger and re-opened it as the Parkers Family Theater. The Parkers loved the shows at the Bollinger Family Theater and caught a vision that they believe God gave them to revive the theater, but their vision was to bring Southern Gospel artists to the area. “If the Bollingers did it, we can bring it back,” Shenetha Parker told her husband, Tim. They witnessed the success that the Bollinger Family had in Bruce, MS and the positive impact that it made on so many people. Parkers Family Theater has hosted Southern Gospel art-
ists every Saturday night since January 31st of this year when The Masters Quartet graced the stage on opening night. They have hosted groups such as From The Ashes, McKay Project, Josh and Ashley Franks, The Barnette Family, Russ Taff, and Jeff and Sheri Easter.
401B West Calhoun St, Bruce Mississippi, which is 110 miles south of Memphis, TN and approximately 55 miles southwest of Tupelo, MS. When asked what she would like everyone to know about them and the Parkers Family Theater, Shenetha said, “Jesus is still alive and well. This is very dear to us. We want the word to get out there so we can keep it (theater) open and going. This is a vision of mine and my husband’s - we could see it. He would get up in the morning tell me ‘this is going to work.’”
Shenetha Parker has grown to love Southern Gospel music and believes we have to keep the music alive for the younger generations. She will tell you herself that people are amazed when they first meet her because she is African American. She has been called: “The black lady with the Southern Gospel theater,” but she is a lady with a heart of gold and a God-given vision to spread the Word through Southern Gospel artists and their music.
If you are an artist that is interested in performing at Parkers Family Theater or if you want to get your church group together and make a trip to Bruce, MS for a Saturday night concert, here is all the contact information you will need: Owners: Tim and Shenetha Parker Phone: 662.983.5698 Email: timekaparker@brucetelephone.com Facebook: Parkers Family Theater For Artists Schedule: www.gospelgigs.com/parkerfamilytheater
When you go to the theater you will be greeted by Tim Parker as he works the ticket booth while Shenetha is busy getting food ready in the concession area, serving favorites like drinks, hotdogs, hamburgers, popcorn and candy. The theater is a beautiful place that will seat up to 400 people with a spacious lobby and concession area along with dressing rooms and a large parking lot. When the Bollinger Family built the theater, they patterned it after the Branson-style theaters that they had visited. The Southern Gospel concerts at Parkers Family Theater are held each Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. and doors open at 5:00 p.m. The theater is located at

“C an Yo u Handle It” Think Before You Talk
By David Staton
I honestly believe we take ourselves way too seriously most of the time. I read a book a few years ago called, “Unchristian,” and the author pointed out things that church people often say that really make no sense to someone who does not go to church. Over the years, church people have developed their own terminology. Sometimes those churchsounding phrases, when broken down, can actually mean something a lot different from what we think they mean and sometimes may not make sense at all. I would like to focus on my own top 10 funny things that you hear or see done in church that you will not hear or see done anywhere else.
dered what the difference was in leading, guiding and directing when it came to God’s leadership in our lives. Isn’t this like saying, “Lord, shine, illuminate, and brighten our path?” Sometimes I think we pray out of repetition and don’t even think about what we’re saying. For example, if I wanted my employer to give me a raise, I wouldn’t go in and say, “Boss, I’d like for you to pay me more, give me a raise, and increase my salary.” Maybe I’m the only one who notices or thinks about these things, but sometimes I have to laugh.
Drumroll please.................
Now don’t get me wrong, I appreciate anyone who will genuinely pray for me. But immediately after a concert or service, there is always a certain percentage of the people who are in a hurry to get out the door. They have some situation or circumstance that make them too busy or not interested in talking with anyone. Jesus could manifest
10. While closing a public prayer, many people will say, “Lord, lead, guide, and direct us.” Ever since I was a little kid sitting in church, I often won-

Himself in physical form during that event and they will not be distracted from getting out of the church as soon as someone says the last “amen” to the closing prayer. Nothing moves them enough to make them remotely interested in anything you may offer on your product display, or even to introduce themselves, but as they rush by you to get to the door, they’ll say, “we’ll be praying for you.” Do I believe they will pray for me? Probably not. I just want to give those folks my card and say, “Please put my card in your bible with your prayer list so you won’t forget to pray for me.” Chances are, if nothing happened that night to move them enough to speak to anyone in their own church, or me, they will probably forget my name before they get to their car, let alone by the next time they pray. 8. “This next song is number 79 on the charts right now.” Now artists, before you get mad at me, I beg you to stop and think. Have you ever heard a secular artist announce where their song is on the charts beyond the top 10? No, I can tell you that you have not because anything beyond that in the secular world probably means the audience isn’t hearing it enough to be familiar with that particular song. I’m not saying that your song isn’t being played, but I just want to put things in perspective. If this isn’t funny to you, you may need a bigger bus to haul that ego around. 7. “I don’t claim to be a singer, but you all pray for me while I do this next song.” Enough said! I don’t claim to be a mechanic and that’s why you’d better not let me under the hood of your car. 6. “I was so sad to hear about brother Harold passing away. I’m taking them baked beans, so why don’t you bring some potato salad.” I think this may be a southern thing, but I love it. Comfort food! 5. “We don’t like entertainment, we like ministry!” When I’ve heard people say this, I ask them who their favorite singers or preachers are and what it is they like about them. Most of the things they tell me they like about them have to do with how they deliver their music or message. Those things are all elements of what is done to hold people’s attention. That is the entertainment value of anyone’s presentation. These are all very good qualities and characteristics of any singer or preacher. Without them, they wouldn’t be able to hold anyone’s attention long enough to get their message across. The ability to hold someone’s attention by entertaining them is a gift and is not a bad thing. It is a good quality that God can use as long as the message stays true to the gospel. 4. Singer or preacher to the soundman: “I hear some feedback, can you fix that?” The master volume goes to 0. Problem fixed!
I’m always amazed at how so many churches put so little emphasis or money toward the quality of the sound of their services. We have the greatest message in the world and we ignore the means by which it’s heard. Even some of the larger churches will spend tens of thousands and install some of the best gear and then they’ll appoint a volunteer to run it. That volunteer is more than likely an accountant or salesmen and knows very little about running the sound. As a singer, I can tell you that the most valuable guy on the road is the guy that runs your sound. Your presentation can be strong or crumble depending on their ability and knowledge. If you are a small but growing church considering paid positions within the staff of the church, pay your pastor first and then pay a qualified sound tech to make sure you can clearly understand and hear what he has to say. 3. “I sit in this pew every Sunday. I even leave my bible here every week to save my seat!” I guess people don’t realize they are telling on themselves. If their bible sits in their pew all week long, it never gets opened until Sunday rolls around. If you ask them why they don’t leave their coat there to save their place, they would tell you, “I might need my coat.” 2. “How many would rather be here than the best hospital in town?” That is right up there with, ‘How many would rather have Jesus than Ebola?’ 1. “You all listen to the words of this song and not how I sing it.” This has to be one of my all time favorites! When I hear this, I just wish they would put the words up on the screen and let us read them. That way we can focus on the words and not have to hear what has been apologized for in advance.

Dusty Wells is a man of many talents and multiple skills, from his speaking engagements across the country, to traveling and encouraging various artists in the Christian music genres. Dusty has a passion that is evident from the moment you meet him. Dusty is a man who remains passionate and secure in the calling and destiny upon his life. He has come to realize the importance of finding purpose and clear direction for not only his life, but also the lives of those he comes in contact with, no matter what stage of life they may be in. Growing up in a very dysfunctional home, surrounded by all types of abuse, Dusty had every excuse to be a failure in life. He grew up on welfare, having to steal his daily necessities of life at times, being surrounded by drugs, alcohol and pornography. He was raised by a mother who was married multiple times, living in a housing project on the wrong side of town. But in the midst of what seemed to be complete devastation, God had different plans of success for Dusty. At the age of 14, a precious couple took time out of their own lives to invest in Dusty…thus leading Him to the Lord. His life is a testimony of God’s relentless love and deliverance, and is one of the most triumphant stories told in modern Christianity. Dusty is confident in the fact that if God can do it for him, He can do it for anyone, no matter the situation. Dusty and his wife of 33 years have four children, and two grandbabies with one more on the way. They make their home in Nashville, Tn. Joan Walker grew up with music in the house and first heard Southern Gospel in her early teens. With almost a quirky (some may say ‘weird’) need to make sure words are spelled correctly and the apostrophes are in the right place, she enjoys proofreading the articles for the SGN Scoops magazine each month...and looks beyond the letters and commas to the wonderful words each writer has written. Joan counts it as a blessing in her life to be part of SGN Scoops!

After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University with a Mass Communication degree, Craig Harris has been in the journalism field for more than 15 years, working daily as both a photographer and writer at one of the largest non-daily publications in the state of Tennessee. He has experience in feature writing, news writing, action photography, portrait photography, web-site maintenance and layout. Craig has been a part of numerous awards, both collective and individual honors in the journalism field. He has had articles published in numerous newspapers and magazines on a variety of subjects, most notably in the world of sports. Craig’s Southern Gospel interest dates back for approximately the same time span, having closely followed the industry since the later portion of the 1990s. He also performed for seven years with a local trio prior to joining the SGN Scoops staff. David’s distinctive sound and his ability to blend perfectly with a variety of vocalists has made him a valuable commodity on live events as well as in the studio. His compassionate and gentle spirit makes him more than an artist, it makes him a great friend! David began singing at age 6 with family. In 1990, he filled in for the Speer Family and later that year he became the lead vocalist for The Trailblazers. In 2002, Staton filled the lead position with Priority. While with Priority, the group was the resident gospel group at the Silver Dollar City theme park in Branson, MO and they performed for over one million people in one year. After the group disbanded in 1995, David continued to write for artists in many different genres of music while occasionally performing solo. It was during this time that his song, “Every Knee Shall Bow”, recorded by Dottie Peoples, was nominated for a Grammy Award. His song, “Together We Can” was adopted as the national theme song to bring awareness to violence in schools. The music video (Together We Can) that featured many Atlanta based artists was shown at the 1999 Grammy Awards show, which helped launch the careers of artists like R&B’s Jagged Edge, India Arie, and 4.0. In 2004, David partnered with Mike LeFevre to form The LeFevre Quartet. During the seven years that he was the lead vocalist, the group had many hit songs and won many awards. After leaving the LeFevre
Quartet in 2011, Staton began working on a solo project and also began singing with Palmetto State Quartet. The group appeared on television and toured with country music superstar, Wynonna Judd while Staton was there. Through the years, artists like Gold City, Jeff & Sheri Easter, Kingsmen, Singing Americans, Dixie Melody Boys, Imperials, Dottie Peoples, Ball Brothers, LeFevre Quartet, Palmetto State Quartet, Priority, Trailblazers, The Greenes, Ivan Parker, Brian Free and many more have recorded David’s music. From 2005 to 2013, Staton was the Executive Vice President for Song Garden Music Group in Nashville, TN. In recent years, the National Quartet Convention has asked David to be a part of an industry advisory panel to help artists who need assistance and training. Not only has David made a mark as an artist, he is passing on his talent and knowledge to new artists, influencing and shaping the future of Gospel music. Kelly Nelon Clark is the daughter of Gospel Music icon, the late Rex Nelon. As part of her father’s group, The Nelons, she blazed a musical trail bringing a fresh new sound to the traditional Gospel quartet style. That sound and style influenced a generation of Gospel music performers and can be heard today in the styling of groups like the Martins, Point of Grace, The Crabb Family and more. As The Nelons broke new ground, the Gospel Music industry repeatedly recognized their excellence. The group won four GMA Dove awards as well as multiple awards from readers of Singing News Magazine. Kelly was named female vocalist of the year on four occasions and received favorite alto vocalist award 3 times. At one time, Kelly was the most awarded artists in the history of the Singing News Fan Awards. The music industry at large also recognized The Nelons with 3 Grammy nominations. Today, Kelly currently performs throughout the United States, Canada and Europe with her husband and two daughters as The Nelons. The group is featured in hundreds of churches and concerts each year. The Nelons have been part of Gaither Homecoming concerts sharing their music with thousands of Gospel Music fans in sold-out arenas across the country. Marcie Gray was born and raised in sunny California, yet always dreamed of moving to Tennessee. She had planned to move to the south as a young adult and sing with a gospel group, after being inspired to do so by her Great Uncle, Alphus LeFevre. Though it took longer than she had expected, in 2011, her dream of moving east finally came true when her husband, Don, retired from the CHP. They packed up their two youngest daughters, three dogs and two horses and headed east. What a blessing to finally be where the tea is sweet, the Southern Gospel music is plentiful and there’s a Cracker Barrel on every corner! Spend ten minutes with Marcie and you’ll learn that she is rarely lacking for something to say. Her passion for Southern Gospel music, combined with her instinct to be behind the camera, makes journalism a very enjoyable outlet for that “Type A” personality she has been affectionately labeled with by her family and friends. Marcie is a worship leader, vocalist and songwriter. She has directed choirs of all ages and given voice lessons for many years. Her solo CD, “Carry Me Home” was released in September of 2014. Having family in ministry has given Marcie a desire to support those who are on the road sharing the gospel through song. Visit her website at www.graydoveministries.com to learn more!

Hi, my name is Dean Adkins and I am honored to be a part of the SGN Scoops family. Perhaps some background information would be beneficial. I am sometimes called “Professor” because I was a Biology professor at Marshall University for 31 years and I retired in 2004. I grew up listening to gospel music (or as it is now termed Southern Gospel Music) and many of my relatives (Adkins, Toney, Booth families) are gospel singers/musicians. I collect records, primarily LPs, and SGM related items. Over the years I have studied the history of this genre. I would like to use these articles to describe events and the mind-set of the 1950s and 60s – sometimes called the Golden Age of Gospel Music. Alpha Source Media Group is lead by Candi Combs and was born out of a strong desire to support the ministers who share the gospel on the highways and byways of life. Combs says, “These artists and their families spend their days selflessly bringing the life-changing message of Jesus to crowds large and small. We want to do all we can to support them!” In 2015, Candi will have a law degree from Liberty University and will provide a full range of legal counsel. This component will bring the highest level of support to those who also desire legal representation. Bethany Cook is a 26-year-old from the great state of North Carolina. In her early years, Bethany grew up on the road as the daughter of an evangelist. In her teen years, the family came off the road and made their home in Burlington, NC where her father is now a pastor. Being an avid Southern Gospel fan from an early age has enabled Bethany to meet many different artists and make many friends along the way. With a history of devotional writing for family and friends, she looks forward to sharing her writing and allowing her readers to see a little more into the lives of Southern Gospel Music artists. Bethany is a Medical Assistant for a large Cardiology Practice in North Carolina.
