OSCAR HERNANDEZ EARNS DOCTORATE

HABITAT FAMILY MEMBER GRADUATES FROM LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY

O

scar A. Hernandez received his Doctor of Physical Therapy from Loma Linda University June 16, 2013. He attended Glendale High School and graduated from California State University, Long Beach in 2008. It was after having back surgery and going through physical therapy himself that he became interested in the profession. While he was taking pre-requisite classes and earning volunteer hours, he was able to put in many hours of work on his family’s new home because he had a flexible schedule. “I was there for digging the foundation, installing plumbing and windows, putting up drywall and painting. It was the first project with a subterranean garage and an elevator and a wheel chair lift. That was important because my brother Kevin Huerta has cerebral palsy,” Oscar said. “One of my neighbors is also in a wheel chair.” Kenwood is an 11-home condominium development. Each home has a two-car, semi-subterranean garage. The three-bedroom, 1½-bath

units rise two stories above the garages. Two of the units have been modified for handicap accessibility. Oscar, his brother and three sisters moved into their Kenwood home in 2010. Now two of his sisters are married with families of their own. Kevin is in school and Oscar has moved back home. He is working at Cedars Sinai Hospital and is 8-weeks into his residency in the Neurology Department. He is the first resident in the new program. Oscar’s great work ethic and compassion for others truly shows. We wish Oscar all the best in his quickly advancing career and would like to congratulate him on his many achievements thus far.

ave you heard the news? SGV Habitat is currently hard at work rehabbing a massive retail space in Atwater Village, soon to be the affiliate’s largest ReStore yet! Within the 15,000 square-foot building, shoppers from Atwater Village, Glendale, and surrounding communities will find thousands of home maintenance product choices and bargains galore! Dave Hahn, Hahn Contractors, Inc. is responsible for the transformation of this ReStore property and has been hard at work refurbishing the weathered buildings. ReStores are a program strategy of Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the nation. Net operating income supports SGV Habitat’s affordable housing work for the benefit of low-income families who need homes that are safe and decent. Easy access from the 134 Freeway and popular surrounding businesses makes Atwater Village a prime location for ReStore customers. There is room for more than 50 parking spaces at the Atwater Village ReStore which will vastly improve customers’ shopping experience. Another plus is that access at the railroad crossing

from Broadway (Glendale) across to Brazil (Atwater Village) will be open by the time the Atwater Village ReStore opens. The new ReStore sign will guide shoppers and donors to the parking lot and main entrance. Planning for the Grand Opening event is underway. Partnerships with local businesses and volunteers who are ReStore enthusiasts are needed to disseminate fliers and spread the word. The Grand Opening event will be a day to remember with a plethora of new and used items up for sale, music, great food, and valuable giveaways. Keep your eye out for the Grand Opening date! Don’t miss this milestone event! Check out the list below to learn more about how you can contribute to the Atwater Village ReStore’s success. If you’ve never shopped at or donated to a ReStore, give it a try! You will not be disappointed—and you’ll enjoy the experience. Find the ReStore nearest you at sgvhabitat.org/restores.
