Sunday School For Ages 5-12

with Dr. Ruth Ashrafi Sundays, April 12 to June 21 10:00-11:00 AM Shaarey Zedek is proud to introduce its new Sunday school program: CHAI: Learning for Jewish Life. Solidly Jewish, educationally sound and beautifully and colourfully illustrated. The Jewish sages teach us that “the world stands on three things: On Torah, on Avodah, and on G’milut Chasadim”. These pursuits – study, worship, and deeds of loving-kindness – provide the framework within which Jews build their relationships with God, with one another, and with the world. Accordingly, Torah, Avodah, and G’milut Chasadim serve as the core of the CHAI curriculum, providing students with the foundation for a lifetime of Jewish learning. Our students will learn about these three strands and discover how they relate to their lives. They will learn the stories in the Torah, explore questions about God, and learn about implementing Jewish values. The students will also learn about the Jewish holidays. Because the curriculum spirals, students study something new about each holiday every year. Each year has its own focus for Torah, Avodah and G’milut Chasadim. Coupled with our Hebrew program, your child will receive a solid, all-round Jewish education. The program comes with attractively illustrated workbooks and classroom materials. Parents can follow their child’s learning through regular updates. $110 ($90 for Members) Siblings ½ Price | Register

Melton Graduate? Your journey EXPANDS here! Bemidbar: Leadership Defied and Defended Tuesdays, April 14 to June 16, 7:00 PM Israel’s fateful journey through the wilderness of Sinai presented numerous challenges to the leadership of Moses and Aaron; at times the nation challenged their competence as leaders, and at times individuals arose to challenge their very right to lead. This new Melton Scholars course will survey the dramatic events of the fourth book of the Torah, Sefer BeMidbar, through analysis of biblical texts, artwork and related commentaries, old and new. As students explore the biblical narratives describing forty years of wandering in the wilderness, they will be surprised to note the timeless nature of those stories. How can the lessons learned from the past be applied to solving the communal challenges of the present and the future? BeMidbar introduces significant literary tools often used by scholars in the study of the Bible, and invites participants to revisit and rethink commonly held beliefs about the perceived heroes and rebels of the biblical narrative. Each month we will welcome a guest teacher, drawn from a wide range of fields. 53rd Annual Sisterhood Interfaith Luncheon

HaMakom: The Place of God Guest Speaker Jordan Bighorn, Manitoba Hero Tuesday, May 12, Noon The Sisterhood of the Congregation Shaarey Zedek is pleased to present Jordan Bighorn, one of five recipients of the 2014 Manitoba Hero Awards. This award was received at an Annual Gala last September held at the Fairmont Hotel, and chaired by Paul Bennet, former Blue Bomber. Born in Seattle, Washington, of the Fort Peck Assiniboine Sioux community, and with a strong Lakota heritage, Jordan’s life path has led him to make his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the name of which – Manitoh Ahbee – ‘the place where the Creator sits’ – he feels denotes a mysterious nexus of potential, inspiration, and vision of what is possible when unity is established between all avenues of life. Jordon is Program Manager for CEDA Pathways to Education, and won the Hero award primarily for his work in co-developing a program called Mino Bimaadiziwin, which helps First Nations youth to graduate from high school, supporting them as they begin to transform the generational cycles that have hindered growth in the lives of their families. He is also a member of the Baha’i Faith, finding his basic beliefs and spiritual convictions follow hand in hand with his career, particularly in the service and uplifting of these Winnipeg communities. Upon receiving his award, Jordan told CBC: “I feel like this work is so critical because if I desire for my own children to have a brighter future—if I desire in my golden years, if I make it that far, to have a future I desire—it’s going to be in the hands of our youth today.” This promises to be an inspirational and very relevant event. Menu: Salad: Romaine and Mixed Greens with Peach, Roasted Beets, Red Onions, Feta and Toasted Pecans. Drizzled with Honey Lemon Herb Vinaigrette. Entrée: Pan Seared Salmon with a Grapefruit Beurre Blanc, Fondant Potatoes and Grilled Asparagus. Vegetarian Option: Grilled Vegetable Lasagna with Garlic Bread Sticks. Dessert: White Chocolate Pistachio Cheesecake with Ginger Snap Crust, Mixed Berry Compote and Decorative Tuille. Cost: $30 per person Reserve by Monday, May 4 Chaired by Simone Cohen Everyone is Welcome – Women and Men of All Faiths and Backgrounds

We have now embarked on a journey through the Former Prophets—as depicted in the books of First and Second Samuel, and First and Second Kings–featuring the likes of the prophets Samuel, Nathan, Elijah, Elisha, and others—not to mention King Saul, King David, King Solomon, and their royal descendants, right down to the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. These often obscure books of the Bible offer a fascinating glimpse into the early history of Israel, and the complex and harrowing history through which we were guided by both Prophet and King, dozens of centuries before our own complex era. “Even if they [Israel] are not prophets, they are [nevertheless] the children of prophets” (Babylonian Talmud, Pesachim 66b).
