A STORY YOU CAN TELL AT YOUR SEDER MESSAGE FROM

RABBI ALAN GREEN

This story comes from Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach—one of the great story tellers of the generation. And this is what he says: One Seder night, at Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech’s table, his Hasidim exclaimed: “Rebbe! No one in the world can make a Seder like you.” The Rebbe replied: “What do you know about Seders? Do you really want to know whose Seder reached the highest heights? It was the Seder of Moisheleh the Water Carrier!” The next morning, the Rebbe said, “Bring Moisheleh the Water Carrier to me, and let him tell you how he conducted his Seder last night.” They brought Moisheleh into the Rebbe’s study. Moisheleh broke down in tears: “Rebbe, I promise you—I’ll never do it again! I promise never to make such a Seder again!” But the Rebbe was smiling. He said, “Moisheleh, I didn’t bring you here to put you to shame. On the contrary! Your Seder was so beautiful. I want you to tell us what you did.” Moisheleh began: “Rebbe—you know, I’m so poor. I have no joy in my life. So, sometimes I get drunk. Well—everyone knows you can’t drink vodka on Pesach. So, I had a great idea. The night before Pesach, I’d get good and drunk, and stay drunk all Pesach long!” “But Gevaldt—was I ever drunk! I lay on my bed all day. When evening came, and it was time to make the Seder, all I could do was sleep. Finally, my wife came in and said, ‘Moisheleh, it’s five minutes before dawn. In five minutes, it’ll be too late to make a Seder!’ So, I summoned up all my strength, staggered over to the table, and this is what I said: “My sweet children—I’m so ashamed of myself. But I want you to know what the Seder is all about. I want you to know, there’s one God Who created the world. I want you to know, God chose Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob, Leah, and Rachel. Their children were slaves for 210 years in Egypt. Their lives were so full of pain; their lives were unbearable. “Then they prayed to the Holy One, and the Master of the World heard their prayers. Tonight of all nights, God heard our prayers, and took us out of Egypt, and brought us to the land of Israel. My children—swear to me—swear to me tonight—that you’ll never forget: There’s one God, Who listens to all our prayers. Children! Make sure you never stop praying.” “That’s all I said. Then, I fell asleep again.” Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech was crying and crying. He said: “Did you hear what kind of Seder Moisheleh gave last night? I wish, that just once in my life, I could get across to my children the message Moisheleh the Water Carrier got across

204 452 3711

to his—that there really is just one God in Heaven and on earth Who hears our prayers! As it says in the Haggadah: ‘I am the Lord; I and no other.’” The story ends there, but one can think about its implications for a good long time. “I am the Lord; I and no other” is the whole message of the Haggadah. Of course, this is a matter of belief. And what exactly is belief? Rebbe Nachman of Breslau explains it this way: There are two kinds of knowledge, so different from one another, they’re almost two different worlds. There is Emet—truth— and then, there is Emunah—belief. It’s not that the things in which we believe aren’t true. It’s that belief is so much deeper than truth. Truth consists of the things we know, or the things we can figure out—things that can be understood, and proven. But this is a very limited type of knowledge. And this is precisely where faith begins. Faith begins, precisely where knowing the truth leaves off. Shlomo Carlebach puts it like this: “It’s like a beautiful song. I can sit here describing it all day. But really, it’s beyond my power to describe. Beyond what I can tell you, there is so much more! My blessing for you is that you’ll be able to pass on to your children the belief in the One, the Only One. It’s the best thing in the world for them to have. Because with belief, we can survive all the tornadoes of the world. “When everything looks wrong to us; when the house is falling apart; when the house has already collapsed; when someone has just died—what do we do then? We get up and say, ‘Yitgadal V’Yitkadash Sh’meh Rabbah! God’s name is great! Everything is still good!’ “We really can say that. Because deep down, we know that God is taking care of the world. And even if we don’t know what’s going on right now, we believe it’s for the good; we believe it will be good in the end. And belief, is so much more powerful than mere knowing.” Wishing you and yours a Chag Sameach V’Kasher,

MESSAGE FROM

URI KRAUT PRESIDENT

Winter has come and (almost) gone and there has been a whirlwind of activity at the shul. With all the amazing changes happening at Shaarey Zedek, I want to recap and expand on them in this article. When you get this, we will be fresh off our most recent Scholar-in-Residence weekend with Rabbi Kliel Rose. Although I write this before the actual weekend, I know it will have been a meaningful and exciting experience for our congregation and guests. We have brought in Rabbi Sidney Swartz, Rabbi David Wolpe and now, Rabbi Kliel Rose, and are working on bringing in one more scholar this year. We hope to keep this pace with hosting exciting and engaging thinkers so you can continue to experience different perspectives and ideas from Jewish thought leaders. One of the key ways we hope to keep this momentum going is by creating the following new committees: Brand and Resource Committee (name change forthcoming) – to ensure Shaarey Zedek is able to modernize its message and services and implement them more effectively. Tikun Olam Committee – currently working on a major project but continues to branch out to other meaningful social justice initiatives. Youth Engagement Committee – to start sharing ideas and ways to ensure we stay meaningful and relevant to the younger congregants of our shul. Adult Education and Engagement Committee – to help plan and evaluate ongoing adult education and engagement experiences. They will take charge of implementing the scholar-in-residence program. We need to populate these committees, so please drop me a line if you would like to explore these further! The Tikun Olam Committee’s newest project is helping with Operation Ezra and the Yazidi Refugee Initiative. We have had wonderful support from our congregation through donations of money, furniture, space and time. The Minister of Immigration, the Honourable John McCallum, attended a recent breakfast presentation at Shaarey Zedek to assist with this initiative. Our team is working hard and should be proud. Earlier this spring a synagogue in Connecticut reached out and asked us how they could get involved! Beyond our social action initiatives we are getting positive feedback around our new abbreviated and revised Shabbat services. We recently had our first abbreviated bat mitzvah service and it was amazing! The services are under two hours and start at 10 AM. There’s great music and great perspectives from Matthew, Aníbal and Rabbi Green. It’s worth checking out!

6

Aníbal’s Dor Chadash Choir did another remarkable job with the Purim mash-up puppet show. They performed at Limmud, Gray Academy and the shul – the experience and music are unique and well done and we are proud of what Aníbal and his team have accomplished. Life goes on outside shul so it is easy to overlook what we are doing, but when I reflect back on all of the remarkable activities the shul has been up to, it really is becoming an electrifying and engaging place! I’m looking forward to the next year. I know the excitement will continue! Shaarey Zedek is also working on some changes to the services for the High Holy Days that promise to be innovative and different. The choir, led by Justin Odwak, will have a new structure and the services will have a format change that will keep the service flowing, honour our traditions, and give us a new and vibrant feel consistent with our Shabbat morning services. Our staff has gone over and above supporting, administering, maintaining, and implementing the fast and furious changes that have been flowing this year. A heartfelt thank you goes out to you all; an idea is just an idea until it can be implemented! Reflecting on these changes, the feedback, the numbers of people who attend each event, the feel of activities – we want you to know that we are listening. We hear the Congregation – what they like, what they don’t. But Jerusalem wasn’t built in a day – this is a process – one that we can’t do without you! Please consider joining one of our committees, participating in a service, checking out a speaker – whatever feels doable in the moment. We always look forward to seeing you. I wish you all a chag samaech and a happy and peaceful Pesach!
