A Message From

Ran Ukashi,

Executive Director With a New Year comes “New Beginnings.” As we pass Rosh Hashanah, we reflect both on the past year and plan for the year ahead. While the past year and a half has been immensely challenging for everyone with the ongoing pandemic, and all of its associated problems —with the synagogue being no exception — I remain very optimistic about the future of our community and the Congregation.

Learning the myriad ways in which the Congregation impacts the daily lives of the Jewish community is incredibly inspiring and motivating. For years, I have been passionate about serving the Jewish and general community in meaningful and tangible ways, and the work being done at this synagogue meshes perfectly with my personal commitment to that goal.

As the new Executive Director of the synagogue, I am fortunate to have the combined experience of a Board of Directors with diverse experiences, skill sets, perspectives, and levels of experience guiding the policy of the Congregation. I am equally fortunate to have an extremely experienced and highly motivated Clergy and administrative team who bring decades of experience to the table, and are aptly equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead for the Congregation.

To succeed in this role, and as a Congregation, I encourage members to communicate their ideas, thoughts, and concerns with me. I am always open and willing to discuss matters that serve to enhance the synagogue’s excellence in serving the community, and welcome your feedback and insights to ensure that level of service well into the future.

The future of the synagogue is exciting with the onboarding of new Clergy staff, the successful and productive use of technology to enhance and deliver virtual services, increased engagement opportunities for members and the general community alike, and planned renovations to the building to better serve the community, among other developments. I am very much looking forward to a fruitful and prosperous future for the Congregation and the community at large.

HINENI – Here I Am

A Message From Rabbi Aníbal Mass We read in the Torah, in Exodus Chapter 3, that one day Moses was taking care of his father-inlaw’s sheep when he saw that a bush was on fire, yet it was not burning up. So, Moses said, “I will go closer to see this amazing thing. How can a bush continue burning without burning up?”

still present in the Jewish people to this day. I believe that’s exactly what we’ve being doing at the Shaarey Zedek during this difficult pandemic.

Hashem saw that Moses was coming to look at the bush. Hashem called to him from the bush, “Moses, Moses!”, and Moses replied, “Here I am.”

As the world was rapidly changing, we never stopped. We discovered and applied new technologies and as a result we were amazed at how fast we adapted to the new reality to keep serving our Congregation.

I find myself wondering how many people walked by that same place but never noticed anything special.

You may have noticed enhanced online services (chat with the Clergy, more cameras and Zoom Aliyot, to name a few)

Or perhaps, how many people did notice something special, but they were too busy taking care of their own sheep to stop and step closer to the burning bush.

Online classes with state-of-the-art technology to make you feel that you are there.

But not Moses. Moses took the time to satisfy his curiosity and was rewarded with a lifetime relationship with Hashem.

And so much more.

We all went through a long year of stressful restrictions, anxious uncertainties and uneasy new realities. We all had a lot on our shoulders. I hope that hasn’t limited your capacity to wonder, your curiosity to discover new things, your ability to be amazed. We all need this – especially right now. The third chapter of Exodus invites us to be curious of the world around us no matter the circumstances we may be going through. We should never be so focused on ourselves that we lose focus of what’s going on around us. Moses’ curiosity and awareness of the wonders in his world were rewarded with blessings that are

8

Uplifting messages and music videos to help you cope with these difficult times. This was not random or the work of a single individual. It was a result of a group of committed staff and volunteers that got out of their comfort zone to learn new ways to apply their skills and talents. The Rabbis explain that Moses’ curiosity, parallels, in a wonderful way, God’s hearing Israel’s cries. Curiosity, stretching ourselves to learn something new, should be an integral part of our lives. From the beginning of the month of Elul and through all the High Holy Day season, we read the 27th Psalm every day. There we ask, “Teach me, Holy One, your ways.” We want to know more. The fact that we keep reading this verse year after year is a clear sign that today’s knowledge is not an end goal, it’s part of the journey.

We should always aim to know more, not just about God but about everything around us. In this new year, we want your support. In fact, we need your support, but above that, we want to pique your curiosity for you to know more about us and about what we do.

Cultivating Gratitude in the Midst of Life’s Challenges

A Message From Leslie Emery, Cantorial Soloist This year has brought about a rollercoaster of unanticipated changes and challenges, not just for me, but for entire world. It is rare that all of humanity shares such an experience and is connected as we have been, as we roll through the ups and downs of life. Just over a year ago I returned to my work at the Shaarey Zedek in a much different world than I had left. We had welcomed another child into our family during the summer of 2019 and found ourselves living in a new world by March of 2020, as the reality of the pandemic settled in. I will admit I was apprehensive about returning to the world. However, in the midst of the many challenges we have all faced, I have experienced moments of profound gratitude and purpose in ways I had never anticipated. I returned to the Rabbi Berkal Chapel to find a computer next to me, a camera pointed at me and friendly voices chatting away along the screen. I imagined each person’s presence in the Chapel as I davened, asking where they liked to sit in the room at Shul and feeling their presence in the mornings. I discovered that life had somehow prepared me to lead a Torah Service on my own and I have found a profound sense of purpose in helping those who find their way to our Minyan participate in Jewish Ritual life. Being able to help those saying Kaddish for those we have lost, honouring the memories of loved ones as Yahrtzeit’s are observed, praying for healing for those in need and celebrating birthdays, births and anniversaries with meaning and community despite all the hurdles we have faced leaves me with a deep sense of gratitude that we have been able to find a way forward.

12

At Shul we begin each day with gratitude. Some of my favorite parts of the service are the ones people know the least about. The Birchot Hashachar, the list of so many things to be grateful for that we begin each service with, is a beautiful way to greet the day. The passages for study that have enriched my life so much over the years that we look at each morning. The many prayers for peace threaded beautifully throughout the service. Somehow, we have truly brought together the “four corners of the earth” as the paragraph leading into the Shema Yisrael states. Many mornings I find myself singing the Shema with people from all over the world. Our Shaarey Zedek has become a gathering place for Jewish people everywhere; Puerto Rico, Norway, Israel, New York, India and so many places near and far. I love seeing Winnipeggers who have moved on to other cities, find their way back home for services. One of the most difficult parts of the past year has been guiding families through B’nai Mitzvot in an everchanging landscape of Public Health Orders. I want to say to each and every family that has found a way to celebrate a Bar or Bat Mitzvah this past year, Yasher Koach – More Power To You. Each family faced their own difficulties, however watching you all overcome the challenges and celebrate this milestone in your child’s life is inspiring. It has been an honour to be a part of these moments in your lives. The final surprise of the year was being asked to pursue Cantorial Studies, serve as our congregation’s Cantor and sing as a Cantorial Soloist at services. This is a great honour. I will do my best to continue to serve our congregation to the best of my abilities, whatever the future brings. Thank you to my family for

The Power of Kindness A Message From Dr. Rena Secter Elbaze,

Engagement and Education Director I recently read that kindness is a dominant trait! Does this surprise you? We are often told that if we’re too nice, we’ll get stepped on or that if we always say “yes” people will take advantage of us… yet according to a special edition of Time Magazine, it would seem that natural selection drives us to be kind! In an article entitled “The Evolution of Kindness”, author Markham Heid suggests that in early societies, kind and cooperative individuals would have been sought after as desirable mates and contributors. These would have been likely to procreate more easily thus promoting to future generations, their predisposition to kindness and other positive traits. According to Heid, societies that survived were those where the group looked after the wellbeing of the individuals within it. I couldn’t help but wonder if this were one of the contributing factors to the survival of the Jewish people when so many ancient civilizations died out. The British historian, Arnold Toynbee, on the other hand, formulated a complex theory of the growth and demise of civilizations. It frustrated him that the history of the Jewish people did not fit into his theory as an ancient civilization that is still alive today. It’s true that we were pushed to the brink of extinction by the “bully” societies throughout history, yet we somehow prevailed while all that is left of them are the archeological ruins that testify to their long-lost glory based on oppressing the weak and vulnerable amongst them. Could our values of Tikun Olam, Repairing the World, and the uplifting of the widow and the orphan, have enabled us to overcome as a group? I can definitely get behind a motto like: “No one gets left behind”! This is one of the reasons that I am particularly proud of our Tikun Olam committee at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Just one example that took place over the winter was the collection of food gift cards and funds to serve breakfast to the underprivileged

and the homeless in our city and within our own community. This Fall we invite you to contribute to our clothing and food drive as we come together for Tashlich. Coming up on Sunday, September 12th we will gather in-person, on the Steinkopf Plaza behind the synagogue for the ancient ritual of Tashlich where we symbolically “cast off” our regrets and our sins into the flowing waters of the nearby river. We will have the opportunity to hear the sound of the Shofar as five of our Shofar blowers sound the call to action… to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. Learn more about the event at www.szwinnipeg.ca/ RIVER This Yom Tov let’s concentrate on cultivating the art of kindness and uplifting those around us as we climb out of the depths of the pandemic. My hope is that we come out of these trying times, a little kinder, a little more tolerant, and optimistic that our most positive traits are those that will help us to thrive as a community. If you would like to know more or get involved, please feel free to contact me. Shanah Tovah – A sweet and good year!
