SANCTUARY
UPDATED DESIGNS BY NUMBER TEN ARCHITECTURAL GROUP
Building designs included in this document are artist renderings and do not necessarily reflect the final construction plans.
/1
In the Sanctuary, the Bimah – its footprint, Aron Kodesh (Ark), Ner Tamid (Eternal light) stage and millwork – will remain as is with the exception of a few changes including the wall behind the ark, replacement of the readers tables with new movable podiums, and the removal of the choir platform in order to extend the floorspace. A feature ceiling will shift focus toward the Bimah and tie the space together with the Social Hall (Auditorium). Paint, wall coverings, finishes, and flooring will refresh and enhance the space.
The importance of the multi-generational connection has led to the decision to keep the existing layout of the seating, replacing the pews with new millwork and cushions.
Lighting will be selected that compliments the overall space while also helping define the event areas. The clerestory windows above the sanctuary that were covered up in a previous renovation will be exposed to allow more natural light into the space. Additional clerestory windows will be added to the space along the wall facing the river.
Advanced acoustic material will allow simultaneous events to take place through the building, and technological upgrades will provide for participation of those attending events in-person and those online (hybrid).
“I’m looking forward to the rich and varied opportunities this exciting project will bring to Congregation Shaarey Zedek and the entire community — a sustainable future based on a hybrid of in-person and virtual ways to study, learn, pray, and grow together.”

CHAPEL
UPDATED DESIGNS BY NUMBER TEN ARCHITECTURAL GROUP

“I am pleased to be the president during these exciting times, the launch of a capital campaign that will help transform and modernize our shul for current generations and generations to come. Todah Rabah, thank you, to the leadership, volunteers, and staff that made this possible. A contribution toward this project is your vote for a prosperous Shaarey Zedek future
— L’Dor Va Dor.” – Dr Gary Hyman, President (2020-2022)
The Chapel – its footprint, Aron Kodesh (Ark), Ner Tamid (Eternal light), plaques, stainglass, and most finishes and millwork will remain. A new movable partition will be added so we can continue to have smaller, more intimate services, or to open up the Sanctuary for larger services.
As is the case with the Sanctuary, the pews will be replaced with new millwork and cushions. Paint, wall coverings, finishes, and flooring will refresh and enhance the space.
“This project will be not only a stunning rebirth for our synagogue building, but a commitment by our congregation that Shaarey Zedek will have an ongoing role in the Jewish life of our community.”
– Neil Duboff, Capital Campaign Chair

SOCIAL HALL
UPDATED DESIGNS BY NUMBER TEN ARCHITECTURAL GROUP
Building designs included in this document are artist renderings and do not necessarily reflect the final construction plans.
/5
The Social Hall (Auditorium) and Alcove will see the largest shift from old to new, with repositionable partitions that create a more flexible and adaptable event space from larger to smaller (from 1 large room to up to 4 smaller rooms or combination thereof). The stage will be removed and replaced with storage space for furnture and equipment. The kitchen doors will include partitions to shield light from intruding into the event spaces. The clerestory windows that face Wellington Crescent that were covered up in a previous renovation will be exposed to allow more natural light into the space.
The ceiling and lighting will be enhanced to flow with the Sanctuary space. Windows will be added to the wall that faces the river to bring in natural light and a view of the river.
“Our new and invigorated space will be an inspirational venue to welcome the community for dynamic and engaging Jewish programming and educational offerings.”
– Dr Rena Secter Elbaze, Engagement and Education Director
UPPER LEVEL FOYER
The Upper Level Foyer will be upgraded with new carpeting and paint. The doors into the Synagogue building, the Chapel, and Sanctuary will remain, as will the two Tree of Life Boards and Electronic Memorial Board. The Bathrooms on this level will be upgraded to modern accessibility standards and finishes. Artist renderings currently unavailable.

Building designs included in this document are artist renderings and do not necessarily reflect the final construction plans.
The Lower Level will receive new paint, finishes, fixtures and furniture, with focus being put on the existing central hub of informal gathering space. Advanced acoustic material will allow simultaneous events to take place throughout the building. Technological upgrades will provide for enhanced participation of those attending events in-person and those online (hybrid).
The Upper and Lower Lounges will be modified into one level, and movable partitions will be installed to create multiple events spaces (1 large event space to 2 smaller spaces). Large wooden pivot doors will separate the Lounge area from the central space to create an open and welcoming connection between spaces.
Washrooms will be upgraded to modern standards, and additional private accessible washrooms will be added. Artist renderings are currently unavailable.
Seating Areas will be upgraded and reoriented to increase opportunities for casual gathering in the central area. Appropriate shelving and casements for artwork and books will be placed in this area to be enjoyed by the congregation.
The Sisterhood Judaica Gift Shop will be reoriented to be adjacent from the Riverside entry and directly across from the Office entrance. The new shop will include a window to bring in natural light as well as a kiosk, in addition to the store to display items.
The offices will be oriented to provide more natural lighting to all private and shared offices, and will include strategic storage solutions, a staff lounge/ lunch room, and additional meeting spaces.

RIVERSIDE ENTRANCE
UPDATED DESIGNS BY NUMBER TEN ARCHITECTURAL GROUP
Building designs included in this document are artist renderings and do not necessarily reflect the final construction plans.
/9
“I am so looking forward to the modern infrastructure this renovation will provide, allowing us to further connect children and families physically, virtually, and most importantly — Jewishly. We will continue the important work of building connections and strengthening our community through programming — whether it be inperson, virtual or a hybrid format.”
– Tali Millo, Program Director and Lay Clergy
The Riverside Entrance will be upgraded so it is more prominent, as it generally serves as the main entrance to the synagogue. The spirit of the design will be to warmly welcome congregants and visitors alike to our community synagogue.
A new large glass vestibule will create a more visible connection to the reception area for security purposes and will open up into a larger corridor that will include wall space for artwork, artifacts, books, and casual seating — an inviting entry into our renewed synagogue.
“For over eight decades, Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood has had a role of support and leadership in the Synagogue through countless congregational endeavors — from programs to movements! We are very excited to be a part of this next journey to enhance our congregation’s home for this generation and future generations to come.”
– Sandy Polanski, Co-President, Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood
