THE MEANING OF THE FOUR CHILDREN FOR TODAY MESSAGE FROM
RABBI ALAN GREEN

The Pesach Seder is by far the most popular of all Jewish celebrations. Nothing brings out family and friends like the symbolic meal that retells the master story of the Jewish people, and humanity as a whole. The Haggadah reflects its own universal appeal in the story of the Four Children, who embody the wide range of personalities participating in Seder meals. There is the wise child, the wicked child, the simple child, and the child who doesn’t know enough to ask a question. The order of the children is interesting. According to the late Lubavitcher Rebbe, the wise child is the generation of European immigrants–those who grew up in the Old World, who bring their traditions with them into the New. Their question is, “What are all the different commandments of Pesach?” The wicked child is the next generation, born into the culture of the New World, and so concerned with making it in the new society that they turn their backs on the traditions of their ancestors. Their question is, “Why bother with Pesach?” The simple child represents the grandchildren of the original immigrants–a generation which grows up without the benefit of religiously supportive parents, but who still know their culturally distinct Babas and Zaidas. This generation is still capable of asking, “What is this all about?” And then there are their children, who might never see anyone lighting Shabbat candles, wearing a Kippah, or putting on Tefillin. Though still present at the Seder meal, these children may be so far removed from their Jewish roots, they may not be able to ask about them. But today, there is a fifth child–the children of these parents–children who are absent from the Seder meal, and unaware of Pesach. And so the Lubavitcher Rebbe: “This presents a grave challenge...for no Jewish child should be forgotten or given up. We must make every effort to save that ‘lost’ child, and bring the absentee to the Seder table. Driven by a deep sense of compassion and responsibility, we need have no fear of failure.” There is also another, very different way of looking at the Four Children of the Haggadah. Maybe the wise child isn’t so wise after all. He or she wants to know all the rules and regulations of the observance of Pesach. But is this really what Pesach is all about? Indeed, by obsessing over all the details of Pesach observance, we can miss the forest for the trees.
204 452 3711
And maybe the wicked child isn’t so wicked after all. In asking, “What does this observance mean to you?” the wicked child raises a very significant question. Over time, rituals tend to lose their meaning because we perform them perfunctorily, or because “we’ve always done it that way.” The wicked child might well be challenging us to plumb the spiritual depths of a Judaism we ignore too often and too easily. And maybe the simple child really isn’t all that simple. Maybe the question, “What is this?”–asked from a place of complete innocence–expresses profound wonder and awe. In this child’s lack of sophistication, there are no barriers to understanding, and no obstacle to appreciation. For this child, the Seder meal can be a life transforming experience. And maybe the child who doesn’t know how to ask, is the child with no need to ask. This is the child who intuitively grasps the reality behind the Seder meal, without having to be told. The rabbis tell us that a gestating embryo is taught all the secrets of creation in utero, but forgets them as it emerges into the world. But this child doesn’t forget their spiritual education so easily. For this child, the Seder meal has always been and will always be deeply, intuitively true. This Pesach, may we be blessed with the gifts of all Four Children at our Seder meals: the gifts of great knowledge, deep meaning, profound appreciation, and powerful intuition–the gifts of true happiness in life. Wishing everyone a Chag Sameach V’Kasher,

MESSAGE FROM
URI KRAUT PRESIDENT
I will probably not go down in history at Shaarey Zedek as having the best attendance at shul. To be frank, I have had a hard time over the years finding meaning in prayer. Sometimes I find meaning in the speech, sometimes in the parsha, sometimes in the tune of a prayer or the choir takes me back in time to when life was less complicated, but the substance of the prayer has eluded me for years. I know there is a “story” and a structure to prayer but the speed we go through the services generally renders this inaccessible. Rabbi Sidney Schwarz hosted services March 14th at Shaarey Zedek. He has intrigued me since we first spoke, but how he introduced the service intrigued me even more. He said, (and I paraphrase) that over Jewish history people have written intensely emotional observations, prose and poetry and it was continually added to the Siddur. Over the years, it became very large and the only way to get though it all is to push through at high speeds to keep on schedule. But this is not the only way. The words are like “freeze dried food” that need the addition of emotion (“water”) to come alive. Yes, I know, you are probably not into that, neither was I. As we rounded through our first blessing, I was going through the motions, trying to be supportive and open minded. Then we hit Birchot HaShachar (the Daily Miracles), the blessings we make at the beginning of the service. Instead of just shooting them off in five seconds. We paused, waiting for someone (one of the 275 of us) to stand up and say how they could relate to this blessing. This was truly going to be painful. Intriguing, but painful. The first one came up and was the blessing about thanking God for being able to distinguish the difference between night and day. Rabbi Sid, led it off and told a story from when he was younger and went camping in the remote wilderness and hearing animals all night and being scared. The prayer reminded him of all the times our ancestors were scared at night and how grateful they were when daylight came and how they survived to tell the difference between day and night. I thought that was a pretty interesting observation but still very reluctant about this prayer experiment. Then we came to the second blessing:, thanking God for being made in “his” image. This is a blessing I have had challenges with for years, given the concepts of feminism and evolution; it just seemed to sum up all of the primitive aspects of religion. I figured this would be a “crash and burn” moment for the experiment. BUT SOMEONE STOOD UP I do not know who, as they were much further back in the sanctuary but with her observation she changed the morning and how I will look at prayer for the rest of my life. (yes that’s a little melodramatic)!
6
She said the blessing reminded her of when she had a child and held and looked at them in her arms for the first time. Having three children of my own, and having that exact same experience of awe. There is a powerful connection to all humanity, who over the past thousands of years has felt the same connection and bond to their children when they are born. When I came back to the moment and said “Amen”, it felt like (for the first time in a very long time and maybe ever) I meant it. In some ways, synagogues are like our prayers: they have become old, full of memories but not really alive any more. They are “freeze dried”, like how our prayers have become. But like our prayers, when the hot water of emotions is poured on them, they come alive. I think the same of our congregation. Over the first few months of my presidency I have met many congregants and not one of them is freeze dried; they have passion, they have ideas, they share their concerns about the shul and about the future of Judaism. Most importantly they see not only how the Shul can be better, but how the Shul can make US better. I would say conversation is the hot water that will make the Shaarey Zedek community come alive and I would like to invite you to participate in our listening campaign. In the coming months, we want to challenge you to help us regenerate our community, make a new home for spiritual seekers, be an agent for meaningful change in our broader community, and ultimately helping people grow as people through the traditions of our ancestors. Obviously there is much to talk about – let’s talk!

RABBI SEARCH
With great excitement I would like to announce the formation of our new Rabbi Search Committee.
Chag Sameach!
A % of our commission from the sale or purchase of your home will gladly be donated to the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue in your name
The purpose of this committee over the coming months is to recruit a second Rabbi for our congregation whose primary focus will be member in reach, teaching Torah and helping the Shaarey Zedek team continue to build Kehillah.
The Engagement Rabbi Search Committee is being chaired by Wil Fleisher and his eight member committee are as follows: Ben Berkal, Bonnie Cham, Patti Cohen, Anita Neville, Hart Pollack, Perry Schulman, Sarah Secter, and Chris Yaren. We also have added three non-members as a non-voting advisory panel to gain a better understanding of what the broader community may see as valuable:

Nola Lazar, Leonard Schwartz, and Joanne Seiff.
The Process
www.facebook.com/ ShaareyZedekWinnipeg
Once the committee and advisory panel have conducted and screened the candidates down to the two or three they would like to meet in person, we are opening up the process to our congregation. We will be forming over the coming months several focus groups that reflect Shaarey Zedek’s varying demographics and participation levels and we would like you to come to some events while the candidates are in town. Your feedback will be critical in selecting the successful candidate!

DAYEINU MESSAGE FROM Photo credit: Elaine Halpert
CHAZZAN ANĺBAL MASS
“When Hashem restored Tzion’s fortunes, we thought we were dreaming. Our mouths were full of laughter, and our tongues shouted for joy. Among the nations it was said, “Hashem has done great things for them!” Hashem did do great things with us; and we are overjoyed. Return our people from exile, Hashem, like the watercourses in the Negev. Those who sow in tears will reap with joy. He who goes out weeping as he carries his sack of seed will come home with cries of joy as he carries his sheaves of grain.” Psalms 126 For many centuries, the return to Israel was like a dream, something unreachable. The pioneers and founders of the State of Israel were no more than a handful of dreamers who worked and fought against all odds for that dream to become real. And thanks to them, this year we will celebrate sixty-seven years of that achievement. As I’m writing this article, the Jewish people are preparing to celebrate the holy days of Passover, and that is why all I can think about is a simple but powerful word from the Haggadah: “Dayeinu” (it would have sufficed). If Israel had only managed to survive the hostility of the Arab world and not absorb millions of immigrants, Dayeinu, it would have sufficed. If Israel had only reached achievements in science and technology, and not in agriculture, Dayeinu, it would have sufficed. But Israel has not just survived, absorbed millions of immigrants, reached achievements in science, technology and agriculture. Israel became a light in the middle east.
Happy Passover

The staff and tenants of Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence would like to wish everyone a Happy Passover. Call 204.885.7272 to find out more about life at our lovely residence. NOW OPEN
What is the secret of this miracle? Mark Twain wrote in the late nineteenth century: “The Egyptians, the Babylonians and the Persians rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away; the Greeks and Romans followed and made a vast noise, and they were gone; other people have sprung up and held their torch high for a time but it burned out, and they sit in twilight now, and have vanished. The Jew saw them all, survived them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert but aggressive mind. All things are mortal but the Jews; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality?” A few years later, Leo Tolstoy wrote: “What is the Jew?... What kind of unique creature is this whom all the rulers of all the nations of the world have disgraced and crushed and expelled and destroyed; persecuted, burned and drowned, and who, despite their anger and their fury, continues to live and to flourish. What is this Jew whom they have never succeeded in enticing with all the enticements in the world, whose oppressors and persecutors only suggested that he deny (and disown) his religion and cast aside the faithfulness of his ancestors? The Jew is the symbol of eternity. ... He is the one who for so long had guarded the prophetic message and transmitted it to all mankind. A people such as this can never disappear. The Jew is eternal. He is the embodiment of eternity”. In reality, from a rationalistic point of view, it is very difficult to understand how the people of Israel survived two millennia of exile as a small, scattered and persecuted people. Even more difficult is to understand how these people managed to rise from the ashes of the Holocaust and rebuild their country. This Yom Ha’atzmaut, we should be aware that we are members of a privileged generation that has the merit to see with their own eyes what for centuries, generations of Jews could only dream about, yearn and pray for. We must show and express our love and support for Israel, to reap in joy for many more years to come. Ashira, Ronen and I wish you all a Chag Sameach.

Being Jewish Heroes–Our Sunday School Do you know the difference between doing acts of kindness (gemilut chasadim) and tzedaka (social justice)? In case you are not entirely sure, ask our Sunday School students! During the last two months we learned about Jewish values. We learned about welcoming guests (hakhnasat orchim), saying sorry (doing teshuva), not doing to others what we do not want others to do to us (Hillel’s rule), acts of kindness (gemilut chasadim), behaving nicely (derekh eretz) and helping others with tzedaka. Every week we listen to a story that illustrates a particular Jewish value. In our discussions the children give examples from their lives. We also studied Shabbat and made a Shabbat box. And we continued our Hebrew program. And all of this in just one hour on Sunday morning!
Programming Goals
Come check us out because our programs are growing! Growing in community: • Shabbat hospitality: The Shaarey Zedek membership is a wonderful group of people. We are creating opportunities to meet other members and socialize in a Jewish context. • Family Services: We have a group of families who meet regularly for services and/or dinners. We discuss the current family service format and, following people’s input, it has become a better experience for everybody. Check us out and let us know what you think! Growing in content: • Not Your Typical Sunday School has a new curriculum that is wellreceived by the students and parents alike. • Melton: Our adult education offers topnotch courses, delivered by our well-trained faculty.

MILDRED DEVINS
Two very dear friends passed away recently, both of them with strong ties to Shaarey Zedek. Arnold Portigal, who moved to Phoenix many years ago with his beloved wife, Elodee and his family, was chair of the Finance Committee for a number of years. He devised a program for the Cemetery Committee that created Perpetual Care, an extremely lucrative plan for the Synagogue. Jocelyn Brenner was my “right hand man” at Adult Leisure activities. She collected the money and, when I was out of town, would always take over for me arranging transportation to and from the Synagogue and introducing the program. We deeply miss her participation and her presence.

Sunday School For Ages 5-12
with Dr. Ruth Ashrafi Sundays, April 12 to June 21 10:00-11:00 AM Shaarey Zedek is proud to introduce its new Sunday school program: CHAI: Learning for Jewish Life. Solidly Jewish, educationally sound and beautifully and colourfully illustrated. The Jewish sages teach us that “the world stands on three things: On Torah, on Avodah, and on G’milut Chasadim”. These pursuits – study, worship, and deeds of loving-kindness – provide the framework within which Jews build their relationships with God, with one another, and with the world. Accordingly, Torah, Avodah, and G’milut Chasadim serve as the core of the CHAI curriculum, providing students with the foundation for a lifetime of Jewish learning. Our students will learn about these three strands and discover how they relate to their lives. They will learn the stories in the Torah, explore questions about God, and learn about implementing Jewish values. The students will also learn about the Jewish holidays. Because the curriculum spirals, students study something new about each holiday every year. Each year has its own focus for Torah, Avodah and G’milut Chasadim. Coupled with our Hebrew program, your child will receive a solid, all-round Jewish education. The program comes with attractively illustrated workbooks and classroom materials. Parents can follow their child’s learning through regular updates. $110 ($90 for Members) Siblings ½ Price | Register

Melton Graduate? Your journey EXPANDS here! Bemidbar: Leadership Defied and Defended Tuesdays, April 14 to June 16, 7:00 PM Israel’s fateful journey through the wilderness of Sinai presented numerous challenges to the leadership of Moses and Aaron; at times the nation challenged their competence as leaders, and at times individuals arose to challenge their very right to lead. This new Melton Scholars course will survey the dramatic events of the fourth book of the Torah, Sefer BeMidbar, through analysis of biblical texts, artwork and related commentaries, old and new. As students explore the biblical narratives describing forty years of wandering in the wilderness, they will be surprised to note the timeless nature of those stories. How can the lessons learned from the past be applied to solving the communal challenges of the present and the future? BeMidbar introduces significant literary tools often used by scholars in the study of the Bible, and invites participants to revisit and rethink commonly held beliefs about the perceived heroes and rebels of the biblical narrative. 53rd Annual Sisterhood Interfaith Luncheon
HaMakom: The Place of God Guest Speaker Jordan Bighorn, Manitoba Hero Tuesday, May 12, Noon The Sisterhood of the Congregation Shaarey Zedek is pleased to present Jordan Bighorn, one of five recipients of the 2014 Manitoba Hero Awards. This award was received at an Annual Gala last September held at the Fairmont Hotel, and chaired by Paul Bennet, former Blue Bomber. Born in Seattle, Washington, of the Fort Peck Assiniboine Sioux community, and with a strong Lakota heritage, Jordan’s life path has led him to make his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the name of which – Manitoh Ahbee – ‘the place where the Creator sits’ – he feels denotes a mysterious nexus of potential, inspiration, and vision of what is possible when unity is established between all avenues of life. Jordon is Program Manager for CEDA Pathways to Education, and won the Hero award primarily for his work in co-developing a program called Mino Bimaadiziwin, which helps First Nations youth to graduate from high school, supporting them as they begin to transform the generational cycles that have hindered growth in the lives of their families. He is also a member of the Baha’i Faith, finding his basic beliefs and spiritual convictions follow hand in hand with his career, particularly in the service and uplifting of these Winnipeg communities. Upon receiving his award, Jordan told CBC: “I feel like this work is so critical because if I desire for my own children to have a brighter future—if I desire in my golden years, if I make it that far, to have a future I desire—it’s going to be in the hands of our youth today.” This promises to be an inspirational and very relevant event. Menu: Salad: Romaine and Mixed Greens with Peach, Roasted Beets, Red Onions, Feta and Toasted Pecans. Drizzled with Honey Lemon Herb Vinaigrette. Entrée: Pan Seared Salmon with a Grapefruit Beurre Blanc, Fondant Potatoes and Grilled Asparagus. Vegetarian Option: Grilled Vegetable Lasagna with Garlic Bread Sticks. Dessert: White Chocolate Pistachio Cheesecake with Ginger Snap Crust, Mixed Berry Compote and Decorative Tuille. Cost: $30 per person Reserve by Monday, May 4 Chaired by Simone Cohen Everyone is Welcome – Women and Men of All Faiths and Backgrounds

We have now embarked on a journey through the Former Prophets—as depicted in the books of First and Second Samuel, and First and Second Kings–featuring the likes of the prophets Samuel, Nathan, Elijah, Elisha, and others—not to mention King Saul, King David, King Solomon, and their royal descendants, right down to the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. These often obscure books of the Bible offer a fascinating glimpse into the early history of Israel, and the complex and harrowing history through which we were guided by both Prophet and King, dozens of centuries before our own complex era. “Even if they [Israel] are not prophets, they are [nevertheless] the children of prophets” (Babylonian Talmud, Pesachim 66b).
