THE REAL SIGNIFICANCE OF SHMA YISRAEL MESSAGE FROM

RABBI ALAN GREEN

But what really is so important about believing in one God? What if God were three, as is the case in Christianity? What if God were thirty-three or more, as is the case with Hinduism? What practical difference does it make how many gods there might be in the universe? The cultural milieu from which Judaism emerged thirty-six centuries ago was explicitly polytheistic. This continued to be true right up through the early centuries CE. What was the problem with polytheism? In general, polytheism holds that the gods are vastly superior to humans in might, but hardly different in terms of their moral disposition Consequently, the gods fight with one another. The gods are subject to jealousy, and engage in complex intrigues. The gods are subject to lust, and will sometimes go so far as mating with human beings. Canaanite gods demand child sacrifice and sacred prostitution from those who worship them. Also, the gods are subject to flattery and manipulation by human beings. These concepts and practices failed to prove themselves over the long run. Today, polytheistic religion has virtually ceased to be. Even in India, where multiple deities are worshipped by hundreds of millions of devotees, a sophisticated Hindu would never admit to being a polytheist—as all the various Hindu gods are simply aspects of the pure, undifferentiated One. And in this, Hinduism enunciates a deep Jewish truth. The real importance of the Shma isn’t so much that God is mathematically one, but rather, ontologically one. In other words, God in Judaism is Oneness—Wholeness—a perfect, simple unity. This unity flies in the face of human experience. Because we human beings live in a world that is anything but simple or unified. On the contrary! The world as we know it is endlessly dualistic: up and down, thick and thin, left and right, black and white, right and wrong, land and sea, and so on. Also there is nearly infinite variety in creation: so many, and so many different kinds—of animals, plants, rocks, planets, stars, and galaxies. Moreover, there are so many different kinds of people, and peoples on planet earth: different nationalities, cultures, religions, and ethnicities. Of course, many parts of the human family don’t get along. Even within individual peoples, and individual families, there is all sorts of conflict. So how can we human beings even begin to think in terms of wholeness, perfection, and unity? The Shma Yisrael comes to remind us: behind all the duality, variety, and conflict within creation, there is an ultimate, mysterious reality from which it all comes, and by which it is all sustained. This one, whole, perfect reality is what is responsible

for the meaning that lies beyond the mystery of our lives, and the order that animates the seeming chaos of history. It is this reality that gives hope that some day, in some not so distant future, there really can be peace on earth and good will among humanity. We enunciate this every time we recite the Kaddish prayer: “May God who creates peace on high, make peace among us and all Israel.” In other words, if there really is such a thing as “peace on high”, it must at least be theoretically possible for that same peace to prevail even among the eternally warring factions of the human family. Therefore, it only makes sense for us to establish a connection with that high and holy reality, and make it part and parcel of our perception of the bewildering world in which we live. Then perhaps we’ll see—just as we see that behind every movie, with its swirl of sound and color, there is a plain white screen that holds it all together—so also, we’ll not lose sight of the unity and harmony behind all the forms and phenomena that create so much chaos and confusion in the world. Then and only then—when we see that what unifies the world is so much more significant than that which divides and differentiater—can peace prevail below as it does on high. Then and only then will God be truly One, and His name One. This is the ultimate importance of Shma Yisrael—the declaration that God is not just one, but the reality of Oneness itself.

For thousands of years, our ancestors recited Shma Yisrael as the final prayer before going to sleep, as well as the final prayer before death. This declaration of the oneness of God, taken from the beginning of Deuteronomy Chapter 6, is the ultimate faith statement in Judaism.

MESSAGE FROM

LORNE WEISS PRESIDENT On December 5th at the first meeting of the 2017 Shaarey Zedek Board of Directors I was installed as the new president of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. That, in itself, is quite an honour; to be the President of one of the oldest and largest synagogue congregations in Western Canada! However, the biggest honour (and responsibility) is to carry on the efforts and enhance the results of the leaders who have come before me. I am inheriting a history of leadership in change that goes back decades, I am proud to assume the role of President of a synagogue that led the way in full egalitarian participation in all aspects of synagogue life; a synagogue that has demonstrated sensitivity to our dual faith families, in life and in death; a synagogue that has welcomed and encouraged full membership of same sex couples. And, most recently a synagogue that has been receptive to, and flexible to, the changing ritual needs of our congregation through significant changes to services and life cycle events. This in itself has doubled our attendance at Shabbat services; increased by multiples the number of life cycle events taking place within our walls, and resulted in rave reviews for our High Holy Day services. The achievements don’t stop there. Our accomplishments in Tikun Olam have been enhanced by our participation in Operation Ezra – the rescue of the Yazidis, victims of genocide, and our newest project – the remembrance of children murdered during the Holocaust, onemorecandle.org. I am fully committed to the task of returning Shaarey Zedek to the central role it played in the life of our community in the past. We can do this together by ensuring that today’s Shaarey Zedek is RELEVANT, ENGAGING, and FLEXIBLE in meeting the needs our members and the community at large. Together with the Board of Directors, we have the desire and we have the team. Along with our existing core of dedicated

clergy and staff we have enhanced our capacity to achieve our goals with the addition of Dr. Rena Secter Elbaze as the Engagement and Education Director, and Matthew Leibl as Rabbinic Intern. Both Cantor Mass and Matthew are currently in the process of obtaining their rabbinic ordination and, along with our Senior Rabbi Alan Green, are well prepared to meet the diverse spiritual and life cycle requirements of our congregation. The next few years promise to be “an exciting ride” Let’s do it together!

A Message from Sisterhood Hello everyone! It’s been a while since you have read a Sisterhood article in the Shofar, but here we are – now, still and hopefully for a very long time! We have a few events coming up in 2017 that we think you will enjoy. On March 11, Pamela Brooker will once again chair the annual Sisterhood Shabbat. This year we are honoured to have Carol Simon, International President of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, visit us and participate in the service. (Stay tuned for programming announcements for Sisterhood during Carol’s visit). Just as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah feels so special when they lead the service on Shabbat morning, once a year Sisterhood members also have the opportunity feel special and connected to Shaarey Zedek and to each other. You do not have to read Hebrew to participate. We will use the “new” format so the service will begin at 10:00 AM. You must be a Sisterhood member to participate. Please email us at or leave a message for Pamela at the office. In May, Rochelle Pincovich, Mitzvah Group chair, will arrange our annual Mother’s Day Tea at the Simkin Centre. If you are interested in volunteering, please call or email Rochelle. Our twice yearly (Chanukah and Mother’s Day) visits to the Simkin are always special. Our Chanukah visit was fantastic this year, featuring Elliot Lazar and Mal Magoral. These two wonderfully talented young man and woman were a major hit with our seniors and their families and friends. Sisterhood thanks them for volunteering their time and talents! On May 16 we will celebrate our 55th Annual Interfaith Luncheon. Mark your calendars! Professor Arthur Schafer will be our guest speaker and no one wants to miss this! Our Wind-up will be in June. Denise Waldman will make sure that is enjoyable. On-going is our involvement with Willow Place. The donation box is in its usual place beneath the table near the building entrance. The Willow Place Wish List is on the bulletin board across from the coat room. Gloria Cantor and Glory Fleisher are our co-chairs. Gloria is actually taking a course to become a volunteer for Willow Place. Thank you all for your kind donations! Willow Place is always so grateful. To know more, please call or email us. Of course, what would a Sisterhood column be without mentioning the Judaica Gift Shop? Hours of operation

are Sundays and Thursdays, 10:00 – 1:00, but only if Carole Jeffries, chair extraordinaire, and her new assistant Brenda Greenberg can find volunteers to man the shop. No experience is necessary and orientations are provided. If you are interested, please call the office or email us. We will make sure you get a call back! If you have an idea for a program or would like more information about who we are, what we do and how you can become a part of our wonderful group, please call 204-4523711 or email sisterhood@szwinnipeg.ca. We’d love to hear from you! B’shalom! Stay warm!

MESSAGE FROM

DR RENA SECTER ELBAZE EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT DIRECTOR

There’s an incredible feeling in the air! In the short time that I have been back at Congregation Shaarey Zedek I have felt energized and inspired by all of the people I have encountered who feel so very connected to this synagogue. Everyone I meet, across the generational spectrum, is passionate and committed to the exciting and motivating direction we have taken. The hopes and aspirations of our community represent one word: OPPORTUNITY! OPPORTUNITY for spiritual growth. OPPORTUNITY for connecting to community. OPPORTUNITY for finding meaning and relevance from the wisdom of Jewish values. In my role as Director of Engagement and Education I am working to empower and grow our synagogue membership to tap into and develop these opportunities. So what exactly am I doing here at Shaarey Zedek? The First question that needs to be answered is: What exactly is Engagement and Education? It means reaching out to a variety of demographic groups within and outside the congregation to build community, to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and learning. Why is Engagement and Education important? People need to feel that they are a part of something bigger, that they belong and that they can find meaning and relevance in their lives. Engagement will offer them a path into the tent and a connection to others with whom they either have something in common, or that can broaden their horizons. Education will give them the tools they need to find the relevance they seek. How do I intend to Engage and provide for Educational opportunities? I have started to work with our amazing clergy and programming staff as well as a team of dedicated committee members to define what our values are and what we want to accomplish. Conversations to date have highlighted some key values that are paramount to our ability to engage our membership and bring new people into our synagogue community. We must be able to Provide Quality Customer Service. That means that we have to take pride in what we have to offer and who we are. It means that we try to Lower Barriers to Participation by using inclusive language, and being mindful of signage, cost and transportation possibilities so that all can partake. We will work to Increase Points of Access through off-site exposure. This means partaking in opportunities on university campuses, public spaces, and at home-hosted events. We will work to Build Partnerships. We have already set several dynamic partnerships in motion with the Jewish students’ organization Hillel, the Shlichim1 from Canadian Friends of Hebrew University, Gray Academy, PJ Library and Jewish

Federation of Winnipeg to name a few. The Engagement and Education committee along with the Ritual and Programming staff has been brainstorming on how to Create and Demonstrate Culture of Welcoming. To that end we are preparing to Host Dr. Ron Wolfson for a Scholar in Residence weekend April 28-30, 2017. Ron is a forerunner in innovate ways of building community through Relational Judaism. We have started to Build a Cohort of Ambassadors who will help people feel more welcome and included when they step through our doors. If you would like to be a part of the cohort please be in touch with me so you can partake in the team development sessions and be a part of this meaningful mission. The recent Torah portion where Abraham and Sarah welcomed guests into their tent making them feel special is just one example of how we plan to continue to Model Jewish Values. How do we plan to engage and offer opportunities for learning? Several initiatives have been made including: Development of a cursus of learning opportunities for 2017. Programming for the 20’s age demographic which started with a Chanukah party this past December. Special adult focused activities such as the Carlebach2 Kabbalat Shabbat, dinner and oneg on held in January generously sponsored by Sandor Guttman and the upcoming Medieval Purim Party on March 11. Creation of a team of youth volunteers and a youth group in conjunction with the Dor Chadash singers. But this is only the beginning of our journey as a synagogue community. In the coming year we plan to address the many demographic groups within our congregation including meeting the needs of seniors, women and the B’nai Mitzvah families. How will we measure our success other than “bums in the seats” or cost effectiveness? Let’s consider a Perception of Belonging within the Synagogue and General Jewish Community an Increased Practice of Jewish Ritual in the Home, families and individuals having a Desire to Hold Lifecycle Events in the Synagogue, an Increased Participation in Synagogue Life, Increased Involvement in Volunteer Activities … to name a few. To make the most of these OPPORTUNITIES to grow and thrive as a community, we invite YOU into the tent. Your ideas count and we want to hear about them not just in a causal conversation but in a meaningful way that leads to making things happen. We are also looking for sponsors to help support these initiatives financially. Give me a call today to see how you can get involved 204-975-3489 or rena@szwinnipeg.ca.

Ambassadors Shlomo Carlebach, known as Reb Shlomo to his followers, was a Jewish rabbi, religious teacher, composer, and singer who was known as “The Singing Rabbi” during his lifetime.

Scholar-in-Residence Weekend

Dr. Ron Wolfson April 28-30, 2017

@ Shaarey Zedek

welcoming Relational Judaism:

Building a culture of

For those who attended High Holy Days this year at Shaarey Zedek, the experience was unlike any Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur they had encountered in the past. Shaarey Zedek’s spiritual leadership took bold steps to make the service relevant by extracting the essential meaningful portions, enhancing prayer with musical accompaniment and bringing the Torah to life through vivid narratives. The approval that followed rang loud and clear and has created a momentum for the year’s first Scholar-InResidence (SIR) April 28-30th, Dr. Ron Wolfson.

Dr. Wolfson is a pioneer in Jewish family education and author of two seminal works in the field: Relational Judaism: Using the Power of Relationships to Transform the Jewish Community and The Spirituality of Welcoming: How to Transform Your Congregation into a Sacred Community. He is also a professor at the Graduate Center for Jewish Education at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles Ron, as he prefers to be called, has spent nearly three decades working towards bringing synagogues into the 21st Century. As the co-founder of Synagogue 3000 in 1995 along with Rabbi Lawrence Hoffman, he travelled coast to coast listening to congregants and clergy about what is most needed to help the modern Synagogue survive. The answer was “relevance to our time and who we are” and “places of spiritual community for adults and children”. On his visit to Winnipeg, Ron will share what he has learned about engagement as he guides us to achieving our vision of transforming the synagogue experience into that of a sacred community: a relevant and modern experience of our tradition that gives us all a fullness of belonging and personal connection with both history and with one another. In today’s largely secular society, many people desperately crave meaning and spirituality that’s missing from their lives. Judaism provides an endless well of meaning and what better venue than the synagogue to reconnect with Judaism’s deep spiritual traditions. During the SIR weekend, Ron will facilitate a process to shift our focus from the synagogue model based solely on the goods and services it provides to a synagogue community built on relationships, belonging and mutual support. As he writes in his book on Relational Judaism: “The Goal of Jewish

/ShaareyZedekWinnipeg

Institutions is not self-preservation; it is to engage Jews with Judaism. It’s not about gaining more members; it’s gaining more Jews. It’s about people not programs. It’s about deep relationships not fee-for-service transactions.” Dr. Wolfson’s message will impact 1000+ people over the course of the weekend starting Friday morning with a youth leadership workshop for high school students at The Gray Academy of Jewish Education and later that day, staff/ lay leader training. The Community is invited to join us for inspirational Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat services at 5:30 PM. Be sure to register for the delicious Friday night dinner to take place after services. At 8 PM the entire community is invited for Dr. Wolfson’s keynote presentation: “Envisioning the Relational Synagogue of the 21st Century”. Come back Shabbat morning for services beginning at 10:00 AM followed by Kiddush at noon and a session lead by our scholar based on his book: The Seven Questions You Are Asked in Heaven. Saturday night get your tickets for the Havdalah celebration with musical entertainment and Ron’s presentation of: The Best Boy in America. Sunday, Shaarey Zedek will host a professional and lay leadership development workshop with Dr. Wolfson. Key themes will be Relational Engagement, Quality Service and Welcoming.
