PARADIGM SHIFT MESSAGE FROM RABBI ALAN GREEN

Over the past thirty-six centuries, Judaism has gone through many paradigm shifts. What is a paradigm shift? According to Thomas Kuhn, history is a series of paradigm shifts: “a series of peaceful interludes, punctuated by intellectually violent revolutions,” in which “one conceptual world view is replaced by another.” Looking at the vast expanse of Jewish history, it’s easy to locate these fundamental shifts: from slavery in Egypt to revelation at Mt. Sinai; from nomadic life in the Sinai peninsula to building the First Temple in Jerusalem; from the destruction of the First Temple to Israel’s greatest period of prophecy; from the destruction of the Second Temple to the development of Rabbinic Judaism; from the expulsion from Spain to the flowering of Jewish mysticism; from the Scientific Revolution to the emergence of liberal Judaism; and from the Holocaust to the founding of the State of Israel. That’s a great deal of change for one small people to digest! Yet there is one, overarching pulse that can be distilled from all these paradigm shifts. It’s like the beating of the heart – concentration followed by diffusion, followed by concentration, followed by diffusion. During the periods of concentration, political and spiritual authorities are centralized and organized. Some examples: the patriarchs and matriarchs; when the head of the clan was the one in charge; the Temples and monarchy; when power was concentrated in priesthood and king; and today, in the State of Israel, where Jews are once again “a free people in our own land.” Some examples of diffusion include the centuries of enslavement in Egypt, when there was no discernible leadership; the exile following the destruction of the Second Temple, when there were many different centers of leadership; and today, when there is a significant move away from identification with, and participation in synagogue life. This last paradigm shift isn’t limited to Jews and Judaism. Actually, every spiritual tradition on earth is subject to this same force of diffusion. As technology has progressed, the power of individuals to access their own information, and go their own way has increased exponentially. Computers, the Internet, and social media give people fewer reasons to leave their homes, or engage in face to face interactions. This tendency has wrought havoc in many different spheres – social, cultural, political, and religious. One could easily see this modern diffusing tendency as negative and frightening. Paradigm shifts are always uncertain. Paradigm shifts are always a cause for some degree of anxiety. But change is part of what it means to be alive. Non-change is as good a definition of death as one can find anywhere. So the question becomes how to respond to a paradigm shift like the one the Jewish world is experiencing today?

204 452 3711

Over the last several years, we have seen how lifecycle events such as B’nai Mitzvah and weddings have moved to venues far removed from the world of synagogues, rabbis, and cantors. I read this as a powerful indication of discomfort with Jewish institutions, which many modern Jews see as inflexible, irrelevant, and expensive. Why then shouldn’t an empowered Jewish family hold its lifecycle events with the hall, caterer, and clergy of its choice? This is why, after many months of deliberation, Shaarey Zedek has decided to respond positively and pro-actively to this brave new world of religious freedom. From now on, Shaarey Zedek clergy are empowered to officiate at B’nai Mitzvah and weddings in the location of your choice, without dietary restrictions. There’s an old saying: “If the mountain will not come to Muhammed, then Muhammed must go to the mountain.” If the Jewish people no longer wish to come to synagogue, then the synagogue must go the people. Does this represent a significant change in Jewish life? No doubt about it. Will this change sit uneasily with some people? There is no doubt about that either. The degree to which contemporary Jews have abandoned synagogues isn’t a development I foresaw even five years ago. Actually, I never thought I would write a Shofar article like this during my tenure at Shaarey Zedek. Yet change is upon us. A new paradigm of Jewish life is emerging before our very eyes. Modern Jewish institutions cannot afford to ignore it. However, this essential question remains: Will our decision to celebrate lifecycle events outside the confines of the Shaarey Zedek sanctuary contribute to a more vibrant Jewish future? My very strong feeling is that the answer is yes. Just as the paradigm shifts of the Jewish past have yielded unexpectedly rich spiritual fruits, so do I expect this fundamental change to do the same. Diffusion is the manure which fuels the rich harvests of concentrated growth in Jewish history. In this Tu B’Shevat season, in which we celebrate the continued vitality of the Tree of Life in the face of all possible vicissitudes of life, may we and all future generations of the Jewish people continue to enjoy the richness of Jewish experience, wherever it happens to take place--within the synagogue, or without. With all best wishes for a joyful Tu B’Shevat,

MEET THE 2014-15 BOARD

MESSAGE FROM

URI KRAUT PRESIDENT

My journey started several years ago when I received a letter from Rocky Pollack’s office. Now for some of you that may be a regular experience, but for me, getting a letter from the provincial court seemed to bring up much anxiety about potential speeding tickets or other such legal matters. With great relief Rocky was “only” inviting me to join a strategic planning cabinet for the future of Shaarey Zedek and really for the future of Judaism in Winnipeg. Maybe it was relief or the challenge that the letter posed, but I decided I was in. Little did I know then, that this journey would continue for the better part of six years, culminating in this position. I am truly honoured and excited to take on this challenge as your incoming president. Our 125th anniversary year has come to an end appropriately concluding with the holiday of Chanukah, the festival of light. This is a good metaphor for our Shul and our people; the humble candle of Chanukah was never designed to banish the dark, in fact it is intentionally much smaller than even our Shabbat candle. It was designed to punctuate the darkness with light; to have something visible amongst the vastness of darkness. The menorah and the holiday are a message for all Jews, and maybe the world, that we are still here regardless of the darkness. It’s interesting because that is the challenge that attracted me six years ago to Shaarey Zedek’s planning committee. How can we ensure that the Shul and Judaism are still here in the future? What can we do now to help that? In some ways these are questions every generation asks and ultimately every generation answers in its own way. But there is something more urgent now. As a community we are educating our children, we are upholding the values of tzedakah, and some continue to pray and study Torah regularly. We connect as Jew’s socially at various events and we have our families and friends that keep us in our community both the larger one and also our smaller personal ones. But the tide of secularism and its corresponding influences are not abating and the challenges of finding meaning in our traditions takes work and focus. Many are not interested or up to it – we wait for answers from the major centers of Judaism…. But none have come. Maybe smaller communities like Winnipeg will feel this first and will need to answer it first. I do not believe that is arrogant or unrealistic, I believe that it is history. If you read the biographies, the myths, or even Wikipedia about Rabbi Akiva, Rabbi Hillel, or Maimonides you will quickly see none of them were from the center of Judaism where it was strong. They were outsiders and came from where it was weaker. As a Shul and as a community I humbly suggest, we cannot wait for others to answer these challenges; we must do it ourselves. Over the past 125 years Shaarey Zedek leaders have exhibited vision and passion for a future in Judaism that was modern and relevant. The Shul has been a leader in providing new and liberal interpretations of our traditions for decades

and I am confident this will continue for the next 25 years. But we are being tasked with a new challenge – we need to offer more than just prayer or education. We need to connect with our generation and provide greater meaning or as a people we may be overwhelmed by the waves of inactivity and other priorities that are already amongst us. A people can be perpetuated by shared experiences and Shaarey Zedek is a house of sacred ones. Shul is a Jewish person’s place of renewal. This can reseed and reorient us and I believe this is bigger than prayer or Torah study even if it is the fundamental purpose of both. It is why reengagement can succeed but also why we need your help. No one person or group of people has a monopoly on meaning or good ideas. Over the next several months we will be inviting many congregants to focus groups to discuss their thoughts and ideas further, we will be engaging you with online surveys to glean more, and we have other exciting engagement initiatives planned. I look forward to sharing those with you next time! I look forward to celebrating Tu B’Shevat with you!

TU MESSAGE B’SHEVAT FROM

We read in the Mishnah: There are four New Year days: The first of Nissan is New Year for the ascension of Kings and for the regular rotation of festivals. The first of Elul is New Year for the cattle-tithe, but according to Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Simeon, it is on the first of Tishrei. The first of Tishrei is New Year’s Day for ordinary years, for sabbatic years, and jubilees; and also for the planting of trees and for herbs. On the first day of Shevat is the New Year for trees, according to the school of Shammai; but the school of Hillel says it is on Tu B’shevat (the fifteenth of Shevat). Rosh Hashanah 1:1

our heritage), water (Torah), air (spiritual life), and fire (warmth of friendship and community). If we possess these four elements in our lives, we already have the potential to overcome any obstacle. There are times when we feel depressed and overwhelmed by a long dark “winter” in our lives, either physically or spiritually. But Tu B’Shevat is here to teach us that we should never despair! Just after the coldest part of the winter, when the fruits are still “hidden”, comes the spring and the blossoming. Surely our potential shall bear fruit like a beautiful tree.

The Talmud explains the rationale behind having the new year for trees in Shevat: “Rabbi Eleazar said in the name of Rabbi Oshaia: Because by then the greater part of the year’s rain has fallen (and the trees now begin to blossom) and the greater part of the cycle (winter) is still to come”. Rosh Hashanah 14a Rabbi Menachem Meiri (Spain, 1249 – 1310), in explaining Tu B’Shevat, says that the significance of this particular New Year is that there are 3 months of winter – Tevet, Shevat and Adar – and Tu B’Shevat is exactly mid-winter, being the middle day of the middle of the three winter months. From this day and on, the sharpness of winter begins to dissipate and the trees begin their growth for the coming months. Tu B’Shevat then, is a time when the bitterness, coldness, and darkness represented by winter begin to fade away and a new hope is felt as manifested by new buds that begin to appear on trees. This day should be relevant to everybody, for the Torah compares a person to a tree. We read in Deuteronomy 20:19 “…for is the tree of the field a man, that it should be besieged by you?...” This translation is consistent with most English translations of this verse. But I prefer to interpret these words in the manner of the majority of the major biblical commentators in the Jewish tradition, as a statement rather than a rhetorical question, translating the verse as follows: “for man is a tree of the field – to bring the city before you in a siege”. A tree needs the four basic elements in order to survive: soil, water, air, and fire (sun). Human beings also require the same basic elements: soil (strong roots, connection to

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Programs For Families!

Shaarey Zedek wants to be your Jewish home away from home. In this Shofar I want to write about the exciting changes and additions taking place in family and children programming. The staff is working hard to build a community of families and provide engaging programming for children of all ages and their parents.

Revamped Family Services

Do you like to sing? Do you enjoy listening to a good story? Do you want to meet other families and children? Then come and check out our revamped family services. Our group of regular attendees had a productive discussion on how to make this service even more attractive for all ages: From babies and toddlers, elementary-age and, yes, even adults. The children are in charge and every child has a task. The parents are put to work too. One mom reads Torah and other parents retell the story of the week in English and read Jewish stories for different ages. Cantor Mass is teaching us the hottest melodies to the traditional prayers. When we are done, we join the congregation for the final part of the service. Oh, and let’s not forget that we have made some child-friendly changes to the Kiddush too. No, I will not say what they are. Just come and see for yourselves how good they taste!

Kids Having Fun on Shabbat

Children are always welcome at Shaarey Zedek! But we all know that a Shabbat morning service can be a bit long to sit still! So join us in the Upstairs Lounge for Kids Having Fun on Shabbat. Parents can leave their children with us, while they themselves attend the service. Meanwhile the children are having a fabulous time with listening to a story from the weekly Torah portion, singing, and listening to a Jewish story. And all of this while nibbling on a yummy snack. Of course, there is lots of time to play games as well!

Shabbat Dinner Club

Welcome to our Shabbat Dinner Club! Once every couple of weeks, we meet in someone’s home and celebrate Shabbat together! We have a traditional Shabbat dinner, sing songs, the children play together and the parents have time to schmooze. Everybody is enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of Shabbat. Some families have offered to be hosts for Friday night dinners. We want you all to join in this fabulous club! If you want to be a host or if you want to be hosted, or both, please contact me and we’ll welcome you into our Friday night community!

ADULT LEISURE VIGNETTE MILDRED DEVINS

Some time ago there was an article in the Winnipeg Free Press that addressed the lack of attempts to interact with other groups in our society. That got my attention because Adult Leisure attempts to do just that. Our first attempt (through B’nai Brith) was to invite a group of aboriginal people to have lunch with us at the synagogue. We entertained them, and they entertained us. One gentleman sang and played the guitar, and said he was thrilled to have been invited to the synagogue – a place he had never been before. A clergyman in the group expressed his respect and admiration for the Jewish people. He had led several pilgrimages to Israel and had been invited to head the aboriginal embassy there. On another occasion, we invited a group of Japanese people to a program. Rabbi Green welcomed them. Before they left, each of them made a contribution which was graciously donated to Adult Leisure. These were only a few of the many positive, multi-cultural experiences we’ve shared over the years.

MAKING CONNECTIONS DR RENA SECTER ELBAZE

JEWISH FEDERATION OF WINNIPEG The holiday of Chanukah was the perfect opportunity for the Making Connections Initiative to create inroads into community and offer positive Jewish life experiences. The first holiday event took place well before Chanukah even started with a special holiday booth called Hands-on-Hanukkah at St. Vital Centre on November 23rd. Over 300 hundred people came out to the mall to find out where and how they could celebrate the holiday this year. Free activities included: sufganiot (holiday jam buster) sampling, gourmet olive oil tasting, and Chanukah entertainment with the Chai Folk Ensemble Children’s Choir, “Yona”. Visitors connected not only through dreidel games, crafts and the costumed mascots at the photo booth, but also through meaningful conversations with the staff and the many volunteers who greeted them. Many of those we met at the mall were excited that we chose to come closer to where they live. Once again, our public space initiatives made community accessible. It was exciting to see some of the people we met at the mall come back to other Chanukah events later in the month! A free raffle was offered with prizes to help families celebrate the holiday at home (with a beautiful Chanukiah donated by the Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood) or within the synagogue community (with, for example, tickets for a family to participate in the Shaarey Zedek Chanukah Party and Dinner). Another highlight of the Chanukah season was the Community-Wide Chanukah Candle Lighting for the first candle on December 16th. This is the third year that Shaarey Zedek has contributed to this celebration, enabling many families who may not otherwise have an opportunity to light Chanukah candles and make the blessings together. This year we took the lighting to a whole new level, led by Federation with the participation of all of the synagogues, and 15 local agencies. Festivities started in the Kanee Foyer at 4PM as over 200 guests lined up to sample sufganiot and partake in free holiday activities followed by the candle lighting with Rabbi Green at 5PM. Chazzan Mass and the Shaarey Zedek B’nai Mitzvah Club led the crowd in a resounding Maoz Tzur that was later aired on national television! Later in December all of the synagogues partnered to offer the first Community-Wide Chinese Dinner and Movie Night on December 25th at the Chevra Mishnayes Synagogue. This program featured the film “Sixty Six” from one of the past Rady JCC’s Winnipeg International Jewish Film Festivals.

Re-visioning The Synagogue March 13-15, 2015

Rabbi Sid Schwarz Newsweek calls him “One of America’s Top 50 Influential Rabbis.” Congregations call him “a Godsend!”

Rabbi Sid Schwarz

is a senior fellow at Clal: The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership where he directs the Clergy Leadership Incubator (CLI), a program that trains rabbis to be visionary spiritual leaders. He is also the director of the Rene Cassin Fellowship Program, a year long fellowship on Judaism and human rights for young professionals with hubs in New York, London and Jerusalem.

Rabbi Sid Schwarz will lead a weekend of transformative, highly interactive, thought-provoking talks and an experiential service that will demonstrate the megatrends shuls are embracing to engage and invigorate synagogue life.

Sunday School For Ages 5-12

with Dr. Ruth Ashrafi Sundays to March 22 10:00-11:00 AM (New Sesson in April) Shaarey Zedek is proud to introduce its new Sunday school program: CHAI: Learning for Jewish Life. Solidly Jewish, educationally sound and beautifully and colourfully illustrated. The Jewish sages teach us that “the world stands on three things: On Torah, on Avodah, and on G’milut Chasadim”. These pursuits – study, worship, and deeds of loving-kindness – provide the framework within which Jews build their relationships with God, with one another, and with the world. Accordingly, Torah, Avodah, and G’milut Chasadim serve as the core of the CHAI curriculum, providing students with the foundation for a lifetime of Jewish learning. Our students will learn about these three strands and discover how they relate to their lives. They will learn the stories in the Torah, explore questions about God, and learn about implementing Jewish values. The students will also learn about the Jewish holidays. Because the curriculum spirals, students study something new about each holiday every year. Each year has its own focus for Torah, Avodah and G’milut Chasadim. Coupled with our Hebrew program, your child will receive a solid, all-round Jewish education. The program comes with attractively illustrated workbooks and classroom materials. Parents can follow their child’s learning through regular updates. $120 ($100 for Members) Siblings ½ Price | Register

B’nai Nevi’im: Children of Prophets Chavurah Held on the following Wednesdays at 8 PM: February 11, 25, March 11, 25 We have now embarked on a journey through the Former Prophets—as depicted in the books of First and Second Samuel, and First and Second Kings–featuring the likes of the prophets Samuel, Nathan, Elijah, Elisha, and others—not to mention King Saul, King David, King Solomon, and their royal descendants, right down to the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. These often obscure books of the Bible offer a fascinating glimpse into the early history of Israel, and the complex and harrowing history through which we were guided by both Prophet and King, dozens of centuries before our own complex era. “Even if they [Israel] are not prophets, they are [nevertheless] the children of prophets” (Babylonian Talmud, Pesachim 66b).
