A Message From Gary Hyman, President My first order of business is to thank and congratulate Frank Hechter on an outstanding job as President of the shul for the last two years. Frank and I go back a long way; we both grew up on McAdam in the north end; I graduated a year before Frank in Dentistry; he went on to specialize in Orthodontics, while I did Periodontics. We have daughters that are life-long friends. Now we have reconnected in the last 4 years on the board of the synagogue. I thank Frank for all he has taught me. So, who am I and why am I here? For those who don't know me, I was born and raised in Winnipeg. I have been a member of the synagogue since about 1985 and each of my four daughters had a Bat Mitzvah at the synagogue (fortunately the youngest two together). My wife, Miriam Corne, and I have a blended family with 6 children and 9 grandchildren (who we miss terribly in these crazy pandemic times). I am a recently retired Periodontist, who loves to golf, go to Gimli, cook, and hang out with our puppy Zevy. I am a huge Blue Jays and Winnipeg Jets fan. Over the years, I have been president of numerous organizations – starting with Ramah Hebrew School, Winnipeg Dental Society, Glendale Golf and Country Club, Manitoba Society of Periodontists, Co president of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity and now Shaarey Zedek. It is important for me to contribute to organizations like the Shaarey Zedek that are important parts of my life, and important parts of the communities in my life. So what do I expect to accomplish over the next 2 years, given the challenges of this pandemic, which has resulted in the shul being effectively shut down for most of the year, with no real end in sight,

beyond the hope of vaccinations in the next year? The Board and I have a number of plans. Rabbis Leibl and Mass have been at the forefront of streaming religious services. This was most apparent at the wonderful recent High Holy Day services. The streaming services have been so well received that some hybrid model is on the drawing board for the upcoming year. While we hope to be able to welcome you all back in person, if and when the pandemic conditions permit, we are looking at continuing to offer some forms of online services. Congratulations to Matthew and Anibal for their work on streaming services, as well to the entire Shaarey Zedek staff who make it possible from behind the scenes. As you know, the synagogue requires extensive renovations in order to both sustain the physical plant and revitalize our spaces. The renovations and L'DOR V'DOR fundraising campaign are going to take an enormous amount of work; we are going to kick off this initiative in the very near future. We know that during this work we will be out of the building for a prolonged period, but we have planned for alternative space. We will provide the congregation with more information about this as the time approaches. The working drawings for the renovations are going to be started shortly and there will be a dedicated web site to show the renovations as they progress. You will all be able to follow along with our progress towards the synagogue that will sustain this congregation into the future. We have to thank Past President Lorne Weiss for the tremendous amount of work that he has put into this project.

I also have to thank my buddy Ian Staniloff -- his knowledge about how the synagogue functions and his mentoring are invaluable, both to me and to all the operations of the synagogue every day. Thanks.

Let's keep the lines of communication open. I have a synagogue email account (president@szwinnipeg.ca) and you can always send me an email, I promise to reply.

Bat Mitzvah Redux
A Message From Rabbi Matthew Leibl Photo credit: Elaine Halpert
When I first started working at Shaarey Zedek, one of my jobs was to teach Bar and Bat Mitzvah lessons. You know, Torah, Haftarah, Trope, Blessings. It’s hard to believe, but that was sixteen years ago! And I’ve been a maftir teacher ever since. (I like saying maftir teacher and maftir lessons because it feels old school.) Whether I was in university, living in Halifax, working on the radio, or a rabbi, I’ve always had a side gig as a maftir teacher. For the most part, as you’d expect, my students have been twelve years old – or eleven in some cases with Bat Mitzvah students. But recently, over the last few years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a dozen or so adult students revisiting their own maftirs for the first time in…well…let’s say a while. Sometimes it’s been as many as 60 years!
Chag Sameach!

I’ve even had one student chant his Bar Mitzvah Haftarah 70 years later, but I can’t take any credit for his success because it was all him – he still had the whole thing completely memorized and didn’t need my help at all! I have always found teaching twelve year-olds to be incredibly rewarding. They are smart. They are funny. They look at the world in a truly genuine, honest way. And they are right on the cusp of high school and a new chapter. They are ready for challenges in their lives, the first of which is often the daunting task of the Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Teaching adults the same skills and the same material is a very different experience. For one thing, I never have to remind my adult students to practice! They practice…wait for it… on their own! I never get stories about how there was too much homework this past week or how they couldn’t find their binders or they just…you know… forgot. Sometimes they are a little more self-conscious, a little more anxious, a little less fearless than the twelve year-olds. But adult students also bring something to the table that most Bar and Bat Mitzvah students lack, just because of their age: Perspective. They’ve had careers. They’ve had families, raised kids, often have grandkids. They’ve usually battled through at least one tragedy in their lives, sometimes more than one. Twelve and thirteen year-olds have their whole lives ahead of them; they look forward, not back. But for my adult students, re-learning their maftirs becomes an exercise in delving into their pasts and re-examining life and everything that’s happened since. The stories I’ve heard have been incredible. Like the one lady who still had her Bat Mitzvah book, just as
Stay up to date, watch services, and sign up for our email notices at www.szwinnipeg.ca
she had used when she was 12, still decorated in some kind of a shiny cloth covering, because that’s what kids had to do in her day – decorate the book! Or the other lady who had burned in her brain and could remember by rote the special Friday night prayer all the Bat Mitzvah Girls had to learn in her day.
Happy Chanukah!
Or the fellow who told me he got to shake Prime Minister John Diefenbaker’s hand at his own Bar Mitzvah because Diefenbaker just happened to be in Winnipeg that weekend and somehow was brought as a guest to shul! These trips down memory lane give me perspective as well, and a deeper appreciation for the history and evolution of Shaarey Zedek, especially how Bar and Bat Mitzvahs have evolved. For me, the joy of being a maftir teacher has always been watching kids discover they were capable of so much more than they ever thought possible. Having a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is hard! The expectations are high. There’s Biblical Hebrew and singing in front of hundreds of people. But the kids always come through. More than the material itself, my hope is they learn the reward of hard work and practice, and realizing their own potential. For the adult students, they’ve already mastered this stuff once. They’ve already had the experience, the rite of passage, but by going back to it, I see pride and a sense of accomplishment on a whole new level. It’s a beautiful thing to behold. They remind themselves the timeless lesson from “Back to the Future” – if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.

So here’s my challenge. Let’s revisit your maftir. I don’t care how long it’s been. I’ll help. We can do it together. And if you never had a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, let’s have one now. During the tough times of this pandemic, we could all use a reminder of the greatness of which each of us is capable. And that’s what a Bat or Bar Mitzvah is all about, no matter how old you are.

The Miracle of Nature
A Message From Rabbi Aníbal Mass Last Chanukah, a grandmother was giving directions to her grown grandson who was coming to visit with his wife. “You come to the front door of the apartment complex. I am in apartment 14T.” She continued, “There is a big panel at the door. With your elbow, push button 14T. I will buzz you in. Come inside, the elevator is on the right. Get in, and with your elbow, hit 14. When you get out, I am on the left. With your elbow, hit my doorbell.” “Grandma, that sounds easy,” replied the grandson, “but why am I hitting all these buttons with my elbow”? To which she answered, “You’re coming empty handed?” I want to talk to you today about “The Miracle of Nature”. Chanukah is a Rabbinic holiday that begins on 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev which lasts for eight days and eight nights. This celebration generally falls in December, and this year it will begin on Tuesday, December 10th at nightfall. On the first night of Chanukah, we place a candle in the holder on the far right, and light it with the shamash. Then we put the shamash back in its spot (leaving it lit). On the second night, we light the candle second from the right, then the candle on the far right, and replace the lit shamash. We need to repeat this pattern for each night of Chanukah, always lighting the newest candle first. On the eighth night, we light all of the candles, starting at the far left. We do this to celebrate the miracle of Light.
But we should ask ourselves: Why are we celebrating eight days of miracles when in reality the miracle lasted only seven? The first day was not miraculous at all since the oil was supposed to burn for one day. Technically, the miracle started the second day and as a consequence, we should celebrate Chanukah with only seven candles… Unless we can find something worth commemorating that happened during the first day. Some say that the importance of the first day is the fact that, even though everyone knew the oil would completely burn away in 24 hours, and no new oil would be available for another week, they decided to light the Menorah anyway. Because of that leap of faith, God rewarded them with the seven days of miraculous oil. But there is another explanation as well. The realization that the oil burned during the first day was also a miracle. Yes, it’s the nature of oil to burn, so, the first candle serves as a reminder that nature is also a miracle. The fact that oil can produce fire is a miracle. Chanukah is teaching us that not only were all seven days miraculous, but it is also teaching us that the first day was a great miracle. When we live a life acknowledging that everything around us is a miracle, God will help us to recognize more and more miracles everywhere we go. Happy Chanukah and enjoy the miracle of nature.
According to the Talmud, after the Maccabees’ victory over the Greeks, there was only enough oil to burn for one day in the Temple. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days.

A Message From Dr. Rena Secter Elbaze, Photo credit: Robyn Shapiro Photography
Engagement and Education Director
As we head into winter and the days are shorter, we need to find ways to occupy ourselves and keep our spirits up. After the Hebrew month of Cheshvan, which has no holidays or celebrations, as well as the Covid-19 lockdown on all gatherings great and small, Chanukah can’t come too soon!! We are all in need of a celebration and some light in our lives. I won’t try and convince you that any type of virtual event could ever replace our community gatherings, however, I can say that these virtual events ARE keeping us connected to each other, to our community and to our values throughout this world health crisis. Our Jewish holidays are referred to in Hebrew as “Moadim” or occasions to come together. We are trying to bring you together despite all of these hurdles, with a variety of virtual gatherings until we can once again come together in person. In addition to our twice daily minyan, we have several regular classes during the week including Torah L'Chayim with Rabbi Mass and the Hebrew Reading Crash Course that I am teaching. I find it very inspiring to see 25 students come together on a weekly basis to brush up on their reading skills or to discover Hebrew for the first time. Aside from our Winnipeg cohort, we have students from Buenos Aires, London England and Hamilton Ontario. One of the positive benefits of holding our programs online, is that we are able to reach people from any place in the world! I will be teaching Level II of this course early in the new year and will explore adding other Hebrew language classes for students who are interested in deepening their knowledge. We also offer some special interest groups such as Real Women of Jewish Winnipeg and Chamishi
12
Shaarey Zedek for young adults who have also come together online for learning, discussion a musical Havdallah service and a Jewish Jeopardy session. A young adult session that was held a few weeks ago, brought people together from Winnipeg and Montreal for meaningful discussion. For Chanukah we are planning a special program for you with musical entertainment which will include our clergy, engagement team and special international guests. On Sunday, December 13th we had a virtual Chanukah Celebration to light the candles, sing traditional songs, explore children’s crafts, and share in the holiday together. This program is available to restream on Facebook, YouTube, and our website. The holiday season is indeed a time for sharing with others in our community. Although we are not able to host the Christmas lunch at West Broadway Ministries as we have over the past 20 years, we are collecting food gift cards which will be distributed to families and individuals prior to Christmas to support them. We have extended this project to include food gift cards for JCFS, Jewish Child and Family Service’s Chanukah Delight packages. We are also working with JCFS for a special candle lighting that will take place in the evening on December 15th with Rabbi Leibl. In January I will be offering more learning/ discussion sessions over the lunch hour which will be open to a general adult population. More information will be available in the coming weeks. This winter you can also look forward to a special game night featuring Jewish Jeopardy hosted by our own Rabbi Leibl. If you would like to find out more about our online programs, please feel free to email me at rena@szwinnipeg.ca.
