The Highline

Gardens by the bay

Week 2- Location site visit and recording information.

Site review

Overall, I feel the site was a great way to express myself and modernise the site as the area doesn’t seem up to the modern standards of the city around it. The main bit I saw is that the buildings had very sharp edges and the route around didn’t flow so in my designs I tried to accomplish that.

What worked for the site: • Trinity buoy wharf has a lot of colour which adds to the atmosphere it creates. • The surrounding area has a lot of great views such as the River Thames and the O2. • The site has a lot of transformed spaces such as the building attached to the light house being turned into a wedding venue.

What didn’t work for the site: • The buildings on the site have very sharp edges and right angles and doesn’t allow for visitors to have a smooth flow around the site. • Due to all the metal, it doesn’t look very appealing to the people who would be visiting the site and there isn't many places around the site for people to meet up

Mood board

Creating a fun public space allows for the users to feel more comfortable and that will create a favourable environment and will make them want to stay and visit more.

I feel these public spaces bring good inspiration because it shows a very artistic style on how you can make a normal public space into something spectacular by making it functional and attractive.

The spaces allow for people to be bewildered by the design of a simple public space and will create an atmosphere for people to want to stay.

Public spaces are used on the daily so therefore designers will want them to be enjoyed by everyone so they will try to make them as appealing as possible which is what I want to achieve with my designs.

Week 3,4 & 5- Pavilion and café and public space design development.

Sketch up designs on site plan

During my design process I wanted to see how I could place my designs around the site so in sketch-up I created the site and moved the buildings around to see how they could be arranged to best suit the area.

Pavillion 1

I thought this pavilion would suit the site because it is a very open design and would allow a lot of interior ideas to be implemented.

Pavillion 2

This pavilion inspired me due to its unique shape and how it fits into the surroundings as It looks like it has taken inspiration from the palm trees around it.

Café 1 I wanted to create cafés that took inspiration from the site and as Trinity Buoy Wharf was a place to repairs anchors and other items found on boats and is also located near the River Thames, I thought that the best idea was to make a boat café. Filled with greenery I feel the boat café made an excellent addition to the site as it reminds locals of the history of Trinity Buoy

Café 2 Trinity Buoy Wharf also has a lot of music teaching facilities so not only could I have a chance to represent the past of it but also the present and future through music which led me to the thought of a music café.

Week 6&7- Site layout ideas.

When creating the physical models, I wanted to go for abstract shape, so I decided to get some string and throw it onto the paper and turn that shape into a pavilion.

•During the final ideas before making my final solution I wanted the check whether my ideas fit onto the site. When creating the pavilions, I wanted to space them out to create a more open feel which is why I changed it from the picture below to the picture on the right this allowed me to have more space to create new ideas and manage where they would fit on to site.

•When doing my site layouts, I wanted to see through sketches as well as Sketch-Up whether my ideas would suit the site, so I made a plan view of the ideas on the site before implementing them into sketchUp.

Week 8- Final Solution.

The boat café was probably the hardest element of the design to create due to its size and some problems I ran into during the creation of it, for example the shelter for the café, as I had to cover the walkways and the seating area which created problems due to the type of design I wanted.

The other designs I made were to fit in with the surroundings of the site as there looked to be a lot of apartment blocks that most likely house families so therefore, I wanted to create spaces with them in mind for example the playground would implement the children of the surrounding area. The corner area allows for the people to take their time on the site as it has both seating and a viewing deck. Finally, the music café was a good edition because it links to the site now and creates an abstract shape.

The layout of the site was great because it allowed me enough space to include all my ideas and I feel the overall outcome was amazing because I went out of my comfort zone with original shapes and created more intricate designs which turned out better since it gave me more examples to work with as most designs aren't just a boxy shape. The way I placed all the buildings really fit the area as it allow for movement between each area and it all flows.
