Brief

Theme: simple or complex

The site I want to design on has already got existing buildings, but they are not up to the same standards that the other buildings around it are.

With my designs I want to keep the purpose of the buildings the same (offices) but I want to redesign them to be able to suit more of the area around the building.

To fit with the theme, I could design a building that possibly has a simpler interior and a complex exterior or vice versa and this would allow for more intricate designs.

The people around the site are typically families and working-class people so this building could be used as a public office for anyone who needs a space to work but there are also a lot of students around the site so it could also be used by them for a place to study.

Specification

• Objective: My objective is to create an office building that reflects the modernity of the places around my site, while introducing a complex idea to the building to be able to create an intricate design that allows for me to test varying designs to be able to create something unique.

• Requirements: multipurpose access to cater for many needs, many types of seating areas (both open areas and closed) and outdoor seating for people to be able to sit outdoors in certain weathers.

• Target audience: The building will have multiple sections both indoors and outdoors as this allows for the community that are made up of workingclass people which can create different atmospheres also spaces that are open and closed off as there are many students who may want to work in groups or in a quiet closed off space.

Visual stimulus

Neural networks

This could be used to create a complex design externally allowing for a simpler interior design.

Arrows could be turned into hallways to navigate through the buildings. And the units could be turned into exterior or interior structures.

Data graphs

Could be used to design various shapes for a design that could be both simple or complex.

Each bar could represent a section of the building which could allow for different developments of the buildings such as size and shape of the building.

Research

The windows in the middle could make for a great feature on the design.

I decided to pick out aspects of each picture that stood out to me.

Unique shape created by the origami pavilion.

I think the presence of full walls made of glass make for an interesting way to allow natural light in aside from the traditional window.

Also, the large glass panes allow for the room to feel more open than just a confined space.

Model making

Sketchup version

All the conceptual models in SketchUp show how the size of the building can be manipulated to create a completely new building.

However, I would like to experiment with other types of graphs to see how I can adapt them into a final design.

I think the designs of the first model show how I could make this into a fully functioning building.

The bar graph can be a great way to demonstrate the way the buildings dimensions can be changed both in the ways of height, length and width allowing for many unique designs.

However, I wanted to see if I could use a different type of graph and adapt the changing dimensions factor into something different to help fit the theme better by making the building more complex.

Developing ideas

Using a Venn diagram, it allowed for new shapes to be made as you can use as many circles needed and therefore, I decided on three as my final amount as it allows for enough space without becoming too overwhelming to fit an interior but also enough space to allow for the interior to of a vast size.

I wanted to adapt this as it seemed too simple as an idea so therefore, I decided to keep just the general shape of the building (three combined circles).

Final design idea

This design idea allows for there to be plenty of different configurations just like the bar diagram but in a more unique way.

This design was many inspired by the compound line graph as it looks like the lines are overlapping each other and I felt that the graph would make for a distinctive design.

The array of heights allow for different formats of shapes and therefore allow for the building to take on multiple sizes and still maintain a similar structure which is something I thought could be adapted into my final design.

Sketchup final design

Exterior view (outside area)

I decided that I wanted to incorporate aspects from all three designs.

Each floor was of different heights which was taken from design idea 1 and 3 as this allowed for me to fit the building into the brief of simple or complex by creating three simple connected sections but making it more complex by making each section fit a different aspect of my ideas.

This included the general shape of the Venn diagram design allowing for me to create multiple sections with symmetry.

Middle floor (silent group-work zone)

Each room allows for the users to have a more quiet area for people to revise/work and I feel my design has definitely adapted to the brief in order to work.

My middle floor design allows for people to sit both in the rooms and also sit outside on the table as I wanted this area to be more for smaller groups and for people who want to have some quiet time which I feel I have achieved.

Ground floor (louder work zone)

The ground floor was meant for the louder groups, for example school kids, this allows for the groups to be separate and therefore this means that groups can hang out and still achieve the goal of the building which is to provide a place for people in the area to have a place other than their home to work.

Final model - Exam

Overall, I feel the site has fit the brief by having a simple interior and having a more chaotic and complex exterior and this leads to what feels like a perfect balance between the inside and outside which is why I picked diagrams as on the outside they seem so complex with all the data that goes into them but on the inside with knowledge it can be quite simple.

The car park area/bike shelter can allow for the users to have a place to park their transportation and this can help with the demographic I picked (people in education and work).

The back garden area allows for a continuous flow around the building from the car park to the right side gardens while also allowing more outside room to work. The people currently in the area are especially fond of the outdoors and so I felt providing a lot of outside area would be a priority.

The hedge provides great landscape design to the building as it provides some cover while still letting the user be free outside.

The pavilion/drop off point allows for people to be picked/dropped off and also a place for people to hang out in groups while still enjoying the outside on days that do not have the best weather.

This design allowed for the building to have outdoor seating, covered seating to fit the brief of allowing people to still use different electronic devices and still be able to see without having to be confined inside a building.
