The #2 Challenge “Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” - Romans 13:10 (NIV) If you have ever been hurt/betrayed by a friend/relative/neighbor, you know exactly what you don’t want to do or be, to others. Rather than focusing on the bad, though, we need to look for ways to focus on the good, in life. There are so many ways to show God’s love. We live in a world that is hurting. The struggles in life are what build and strengthen us. Because we are all human, we are going to feel hurt, from time to time. So just imagine the pain and suffering you have endured as somewhat of a lesson plan. Allow it to better you and pave the way for you to do more, for others. How can you show love on a daily basis? I have come up with a personal challenge for 2015, to honor a friend who died, and I would like to challenge you, too. My friend, Rob Bironas who played football for the Tennessee Titans, died in September, 2014. Rob was always looking for ways to extend happiness, joy and kindness, to others. When Rob walked into a room, he lit it up with his contagious smile and personality. Rob looked for ways to make others feel at ease, and to make them smile/laugh. I want to honor Rob’s generosity and legacy by keeping his memory alive. Rob wore the #2 jersey, so I call it the #2 challenge. It could really be a simple challenge for us all … do at least two kind things for others, each and every day. By living the #2 challenge, we could very much live a life as the apostle Paul challenged us to, in Romans. “Love is the fulfillment of the law.” When we strive to show love each day, we won’t have time to dwell on the people who hurt us. Instead, by striving to show love and kindness, we will have the, “glass half full,” way of thinking. I want to live a life that honors Christ. I want to accept each new day, as the gift it is. We have an opportunity, each and every single day, to live a life that honors God. So how can we show love and kindness, each day? A smile, instead of a sigh. A listening ear, for our spouse; rather than a quick word of objection. A soft word, rather than shouting. Encouraging words to our child, letting them know we believe in them. Hot chocolate on a cold

afternoon, shared with our children; not just making it for them, then walking out of the room. Walking the mail to the door, for an elderly neighbor. Paying for the coffee for the person behind you at a coffee shop. Taking homemade muffins or dessert to a friend or coworker. Dinner for your neighbor, just because. Folding the laundry for a friend who is sick. Sending a hand-written note, to an old college friend. A phone call to let someone who is going through a tough time, know that you are praying for them. There are countless ways, really, to show the love of Jesus, to our hurting world. Even if you are hurting, by trying to show love for others, you will feel yourself begin to heal. God is amazing like that … by loving others, you feel the love, yourself, that extends through His grace. I hope you will accept my #2 challenge, and help keep my friend’s legacy alive. Rob would be honored, I know, if you would strive to show love and kindness to others, and shine the light for Jesus, in this dark, hurting world. Being the face of Jesus to those in need is really the greatest way to extend love on Valentine’s Day and every day!

Invite a friend over for coffee and these delicious pastries: AIMEE FORTNEY’S CHOCOLATE ALMOND PASTRIES As a kid, my parents would go to New Orleans quite a bit, and my Dad still talks about how much he loves those almond pastries from bakeries down there. So I thought I would do my best to recreate them, as well as add chocolate to it! 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed and rolled out 1 can (8 ounces) almond paste 1 cup chocolate chips (more may be needed) 1 egg, beaten with 1 teaspoon water sugar for sprinkling on top 1 cup chocolate chips, melted for topping 1/2 teaspoon almond extract Preheat oven to 350. Roll out each sheet of puff pastry and cut into four equal squares. In the center of each square, place 1 Tablespoon of almond paste and 1 teaspoon of chocolate chips. Fold the end of each square over the filling and press to close with your fingers, making a triangle. Place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Make an egg wash with beaten egg and water, then brush on top of pastry. Sprinkle tops with just a small amount of sugar and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden. Melt chocolate chips in the microwave and stir well. Remove from the microwave and stir in almond extract. Place the melted chocolate in a sandwich bag, and snip the edge off of one corner, then drizzle melted chocolate over the top. Enjoy!

Did you buy Girl Scout cookies? Here’s how I love to use Thin Mints! AIMEE FORTNEY’S INDIVIDUAL MINT CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKES 12 Thin Mint Cookies* 1 cup chocolate chips 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened at room temperature 3/4 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 eggs (room temperature) 2 cups boiling water (to pour in a casserole dish for the oven) Chocolate whipped cream for topping (recipe below) Line a muffin pan with paper cupcake liners, and place a Thin Mint at the bottom of each one. Melt chocolate chips in microwave. Remove from microwave, stir to blend the chocolate, then add 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the chocolate. Set aside to cool. Beat cream cheese and sugar together until well incorporated. Add eggs and vanilla, beating until combined. When the chocolate is cooled, using a spatula, pour all of the chocolate into the cheesecake filling. Whisk or stir all together, until the mint chocolate mixture is incorporated. Now, using an ice cream scoop or by pouring, add the cream cheese mixture to the cupcake liners. Pour boiling water into an oven safe dish (a 9x13 casserole dish works well) and place on the bottom rack of your oven. Place muffin tin in the oven, and bake at 350 for 20 minutes. The cheesecakes will “sink” in the middle when it cools; just add the whipped cream there, and garnish with “shaved” Thin Mints and/or chocolate ganache.

The key to always smooth, non-lumpy cheesecakes is to use room temperature ingredients. Cold eggs and cold cream cheese will create lumps. *You may change the flavor up by using other cookies. For instance, you could use a Samoa, and in place of peppermint extract; add coconut extract. You could use shortbread cookies or lemon cookies; then just substitute almond extract or even orange extract; then for the lemon cookies, use lemon extract.

AIMEE FORTNEY’S CHOCOLATE WHIPPED CREAM 1 cup heavy whipping cream 4 Tablespoons powdered sugar 1 Tablespoon cocoa Sift powdered sugar and cocoa together and set aside. Beat heavy whipping cream, then slowly add the powdered sugar and cocoa, until soft peaks form. Spoon on top of the mini cheesecakes. Store any leftovers in an air-tight container. (Leftovers are delicious in coffee!)

Show love by having a “Date Night, In” meal! AIMEE FORTNEY’S CRAB RISOTTO Risotto is very time consuming, but it is so worth it! It is delicious and you will not be sorry! Wear comfortable shoes, is my advice, because you really have to stand at the stove, stirring this dish constantly! I have found that adding various flavors to risotto makes it interchangeable with different meals, making it all the more delicious! You can add mascarpone cheese at the end, as well as lemon zest and lemon juice or even orange zest and orange juice if you would like a sweeter taste. Sometimes I add garlic, and others I do not. Just play around with your flavors until you perfect your own risotto! 5 cups chicken broth 2 Tablespoons butter 1 Tablespoons Extra-Virgin Olive Oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced (if using) 2 cups arborio (risotto) rice 1 cup white wine + 3/4 cup to finish the dish (I use Black Box Chardonnay, and I never cook with a wine that I would not drink) salt and pepper freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1 cup crab meat (lump crab meat or claw meat may be used; or you may use a mixture of both - make sure you pick through to feel for any shells) In a small saucepan, heat chicken broth. In a large, deep skillet, melt the butter into the oil over medium heat. Add onions and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes, and if adding garlic, add garlic next. Now add the rice, and stir to coat the rice, and cook for just a couple of minutes. Now add your wine, stir and let the rice absorb the wine. This will only take a minute or two. Now comes the part where you are “working” on it. You are going to add, one ladle at a time, the chicken broth, for the next 25 to 30 minutes. Each time, you will add the liquid, stir as it is absorbed, and repeat. The rice will absorb the chicken broth, and you will be able to tell that it is time for the next ladle of broth. Use all of your chicken broth, stirring constantly, or the rice will stick to the pan, and burn. At the end, add crab, 3/4 cup wine, the cheese, and any salt and pepper needed. Stir gently to combine and allow the last of the wine to soak into the rice.

Fabulous Garage Sale Finds Every once in awhile you find something unusual while you are out hunting for garage sale treasures. That was the case with this not so good looking candle stick. Now, having said that, the price tag was only a dollar. Of course I bought it, not having a clue what it would be in it’s new life. What I did next was to give the candlestick a good scrub with soap and water and then follow that with a coat of white primer. Next came some white spray paint and I did do a couple of coats, making sure to let each coat dry before applying the next. I think I ended up with three coats total. I still was not that sure where I was going with this and so I began to look through my stash of goodies and found an old silver plated try, also a garage sale find. I repeated the same process with a good cleaning, primer and paint. Using some E6000 glue, I attached the newly painted tray to the top of the candle stick. I thought this could be used for serving cookies or other small treats on the table. It looked pretty good to me, but upon further inspection, I thought it needed a bit more. I love to collect vintage and new tea cups and also saucers. I started out thinking saucers would be a great addition and could hold some votive candles, you know the ones that are flameless?

But, after playing around I discovered the set of tea cups and saucers looked best and so I applied the same E6000 glue to the bottom of the saucers and also to the cups. As you can see by the finished piece, this candle stick has a new life and looks fabulous. If you wanted, you could take this one step further and apply some ribbons and silk flowers around the base of the saucers as well as the base of the top. I might still do that, but for now, she is beautiful and I am happy.

Sweet Treats for a Romantic Valentine’s Day Two of my favorites, hot chocolate and biscotti, combine for the perfect Valentine’s Day Treat. Delightful and decadent!

Decadent Hot Chocolate for Two 4 ounces dark chocolate, grated or chopped 2 teaspoons corn starch 2 cups whole milk 2 tablespoons sugar (more or less to taste) splash of vanilla extract pinch of sea salt In a small sauce pan with a heavy bottom, melt the dark chocolate with a little of the milk over medium-low heat stirring. Whisk the corn starch with rest of milk, whisking vigorously to avoid lumps, then add slowly to the melted chocolate. Add sugar to taste. Continue stirring until mixture reaches a low simmer and becomes thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and salt. Enjoy.

Peppermint Biscotti ¾ cup butter, softened 3 eggs ¾ cup sugar 3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons peppermint extract 1 teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 1 cup of crushed peppermint candies Frosting: 2 cups (12 ounces) semi-sweet chocolate chips 2 tablespoons shortening ½ cup crushed peppermint candies Using a large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each addition. Beat in peppermint extract. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gently stir in the peppermint candy and gradually add to the creamed mixture, beating until blended The dough will be stiff. Divide dough in two. On an ungreased cookie sheet, shape each portion into a 12” x 2 1/2” rectangle. Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Carefully place on wire racks and cool for 15 minutes. When cool, transfer to a cutting board, then cut diagonally with a sharp knife into 1/2” slices. Place cut side down on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until firm. Place on wire racks to cool. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips and shortening and stir until smooth. Drizzle mixture over the biscotti; then sprinkle with the peppermint candy. Place on waxed paper until set. Makes about 3 ½ dozen. Store in air tight container.

Wining with Cindy Love is in the air with this lovely Rose for the Holidays. We recently visited a local winery for wine tasting and to celebrate their newest additions. Wonderful wine and food, and visiting with good friends is always fun for a weekend afternoon. We visited Pleasant Hill Cellars in Carnation Washington. The grounds are lovely, with streams running through the rolling landscape, gazebos perched all around so you can rest and take in the views. The magnificent and very picturesque mountains in the background already capped with snow made this a beautiful view too. Our wine tasting event was fun , but we singled out this Rose for our upcoming dinner party. It’s called Rose of Pinot Grigio, and it says on the bottle “Wine that brings Romance to the Heart and Joy to the Soul” We thought how sweet! We started our dinner with a baby green salad, with grapefruit slices, and pomegranate vinaigrette. Our main course was a pork tenderloin with a grapefruit salsa, mashed potatoes, and french green beans. Dessert was an amaretto layer cake topped with sliced pears. This Rose wine was a delight and went well with all of our courses. It’s fun to try local wines and support small businesses. Pleasant Hill Cellars is not open to the public year round, but twice a year they are open for tasting and have their events. They sell nationwide to several different stores. Their prices are very reasonable too! Spread the love with this lovely Rose for your next party!

New Year, New You! Did you have any resolutions this year? How are they going? Are you fully happy with your life? If not, let’s talk about that…. Define what it is in your life that you don’t like and start slowly making changes. The problem with us (humans) is that we want the change to happen within minutes! “I’ve been dieting for a whole day and I don’t see the scale moving!” Attitude creates a feeling of failure. Nothing worth achieving is achieved overnight. Everything takes hard work. Even having a baby requires 9 months of development. Yet, we still want things to happen almost instantaneously. Why? I don’t know. But I know we all need to take a deep breath and slow down. I know I get discouraged when I don’t see things happening and I know better. I’ll tell you one thing… when I was at my lowest low, I started working out and it has changed my whole life. I kid you not. The exercise does SO much good for you, it’s beyond explainable. It sets your mind to be stronger, it elevates the “good” hormones, or as I call them the “happy” hormones, such as serotonin that does make you happier. It makes you feel like there’s nothing you can’t do. It makes you stronger and there is no better felling in the world than feeling strong, independent and capable of anything. This is why many people don’t give up on their workouts no matter what is going on through their lives. I have a client who lost her job about a year ago. She used the severance and then savings to continue working out because she knew how important this was to her. She said herself that there were days that was hard to face life and get out of bed but knowing she had an appointment with me got her up and going. Accountability is very important. She made it through. She felt stronger at times. Looked for a job. Gained confidence at interviews and found the new job. This is why I do what I do. I love these kind of stories. Not that I enjoy my clients going through hardships, but knowing there is something I could do in my own little way to help them through. Workouts fight depression. as well. If you tend to be depressed, or if you’re in your “funk”, come see me. Let’s get through this together. You can do it and I can help you through it.

I have another client who has a 2 year old daughter. She was never able to get the extra weight off after her pregnancy and it has affected her self-confidence, her work, her relationship with her husband, pretty much every aspect of her life. She came in one day, took my advice, stuck with her workouts, and now she is 30 lbs lighter, happier and stronger than ever before! Her whole life has improved! Needless to say she had to change her whole wardrobe and she threw away all the “bigger” sized clothes. Her husband asked “Don’t you want to save those for just in case?” She said: “Nope! I will NEVER need these again!” She has discovered her beauty again! The saddest thing for me to see is a woman not knowing her worth, feeling “fat”, feeling trapped in her body, feeling out of place. Discover you. It doesn’t take too much, but it does take accountability, consistency and persistency. I’ve got you covered. We can do this together. Just mention this article and come in for a 2 week free trial. No obligation, no risk! I am here for you. I’ve been where you are. I’ve been injured, I’ve been overweight, I’ve been depressed, I’ve probably been through it all. This helps me understand your stress and what you’re going through.

Beautiful Teacups

For the Love of Teacups Collectors, do you ever wonder why you collect the thing that no one else seems to collect? What about those of us who are “Serial Collector’s,” why do we collect so many things? Well, I can only speak for myself, however, surrounding myself with the things I love makes my home “mine”, it also give me such peace. I have been collecting for years. Tea Cups, Cabinet Plates and vintage Costume jewelry always hold a special place in my heart. Tea Cups top my list of favorite things to collect. To me they are an amazing form of art. I love the different designs and shapes. The way each handle is unique to the cup, they are truly a form of art. Americans are beginning to have a renewed interest in these pieces of art form. Other countries have a better understanding of the art of afternoon tea. Tea cups have always been admired and collected, displayed behind a glass china cabinet only to be uses on special occasions. Only a true tea drinker, knows how much better tea tastes from a proper tea cup, kind of like Root Beer in a frosted jug. Collectible tea cups can range from the simple to the very ornate and antique ones. Their prices also vary from a few dollars to thousands. There is something for everyone’s budget. Some of the most popular to collect are Royal Doulton, Limoges, Wedgwood, Haviland and of course Meissen. To care for these beauties remember to always hand wash your tea cup with mild soap, never put it in the dish washer. Don’t soak your vintage tea cup because it can cause the gold leaf to chip off. I believe the most important thing to do is use these beautiful antiques everyday. Get into the habit of having a cup of tea. With gentle care these art forms can last for several generations. Explore your passions and the joy of a cup of tea in a beautiful tea cup. The wonderful part of that is, you can go “green” with a treasure you love. Everyone wins! You can always find vintage tea cups at Pretty Vintage Things. They make the perfect gift! Happy Hunting,

Scentimental Moments with Mimi One thing Mimi inherited from her grandmother was a love of perfume. Mimi’s Granny had worked for years at the perfume counter in the Bonwit Teller store on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. The love of perfume ran in the family; Mimi’s mother had followed in Granny’s footsteps. She had worked in the mega cosmetic store which opened just steps away from where Bonwit’s had been located. So it wasn’t just the scent that fascinated them; it was everything about perfume. The bottles sparkling in the light on a mirrored tray, the aura it could create, and most important the way it made a woman feel. Even the history and lore of some perfumes appealed to Mimi and her mother. They always looked forward to spending an afternoon with Granny as she sat in her blue velvet chair talking about her day at the perfume counter. Now that Granny’s gone, Mimi and her mom still spend time in the velvet chair talking about the power of perfume. Jill’s Story Jill had her own sense of style. Although some would disagree with the idea of Jill being stylish, she did have her own look. The words practical and homespun would come to mind when Jill walked into a room. Her favorite colors were maroon and tan. Jill embraced the look of long sleeved tops with short sleeved jackets. She was often seen in a tan top with a polyester maroon pants suit with short puffy sleeves and a self belt. That was her favorite outfit. She liked it so much that she owned 3 of those pantsuits, all in maroon, because she never wanted to be without one. On her feet were always a pair of her beloved “ Birkies.” or Earth shoes. She carried Dooney and Burke handbags, not because Jill considered herself a fashionista, but because Dooneys were so classic, timeless, and most important, practical. Well into her thirties, Jill had settled comfortably into that look, a look that she had adopted as a teenager. It didn’t matter that, fashionwise, Jill seemed to be frozen in time. She was comfortable with herself both inside and out. Jill had a joyous childhood. Her mother was a cookiebaking home-crafting kindergarten teacher and her father sold insurance. Jill and her family lived a comfortable, secure life, although they had their share of sadness as most families do. Jill was one of those girls who always had a boyfriend who might be described as “good old Whatsisname.” Sort of a male version of Jill herself. But she was happy and her relationships usually lasted a long time. Life was good. Jill had a job that fascinated most of her friends. She worked as a producer at the local TV station. Occasionally, Jill would meet celebrities. One of these celebrities, an author touting her book on empowerment for women, changed everything for Jill. It wasn’t the book that did it. It was the perfume the author gave Jill for being so kind and helpful. Amazing Grace, by Philosophy. Jill, an Ivory soap girl, just couldn’t stop sniffing the wonderful Philosophy blend. It was clean and fresh, but feminine. Soft and lovely, yet distinctive. Jill started wearing it the very next day. Just about every female co-worker asked, “What are you wearing?” Several of her male co-workers turned for a lingering look when she walked by. Before the end of the week, Jill had every item she could find scented with Amazing Grace.

During one of her trips to the local beauty and makeup mega store, she received a free makeover. Jill had been introduced to the wonders of foundation and blush, the magic of mascara and the bliss of lip gloss. Life was getting better. Before anyone knew it, Jill had traded her practical pantsuits for slim slacks and vibrant blouses, or pretty blue dresses that brought out her eyes. Of course the dresses were navy blue; it was such a timeless, classic, practical color. She traded her Earth shoes for Aerosoles; to Jill they were stylish but practical. And everything went so well with her Dooney and Burke handbags. Jill’s boyfriend, Charlie didn’t have a chance. He couldn’t resist the scent of Jill; he only knew he wanted to be around her for the rest of his life. And so they were married. Like her parents, Jill and her husband Charlie lived happily ever after. And as far as Jill is concerned, it was all because of a bottle of perfume.

Makeover

Makeover Time Karen stood in front of the mirror and combed her extremely long hair. It was brown with natural auburn highlights, and hung all the way to her waistline. After the perfect shine appeared, she swiftly braided it and bound the bottom with a tan rubber band and a strip of ivory lace. She studied her reflection. A pang of confusion jarred her. She was immensely out of style. She knew it. Everyone encouraged her to cut her hair, but she was too attached to it. Her long hair represented who she was. It was a part of her. Squinting, she tried to picture herself with a different hair style. Her shoulders slumped and her stomach churned. She couldn’t. Today was a novel day. Why was she nervous? It was supposed to be fun. Most women loved taking time out for themselves, but it brought butterflies to her insides. She inhaled and exhaled. It was time, time for a real makeover. Time for a new Karen. The doorbell sounded, and the twins made a dash for the door. She raced out of the bathroom, following closely behind them. Sometimes they were a bit clumsy. She didn’t want any morning accidents. Not today. She cautiously opened the door, and as expected, her younger sister, Nancy, stood grinning. “Hello, Sis. What up silly girl?” Karen smiled and gazed at her pink tinted hair, cut extremely short on the sides, a tiny flower tattoo on the side of her neck. Nancy was so brave and trendy and confident. “Aunt Nancy is here,” she shrieked. “Girl power to the rescue.” She entered the house and kicked off her furry boots. The tiny children hugged her legs. “Hey Silly-ettes.” She leaned down and kissed each one. “My, my, two birthdays and they think they can wrestle me to the ground.” She stood up and faced Karen. “Are you ready for your day of leisure?” Karen shut the door. “I guess,” she said unenthusiastically. Nancy stroked Karen’s long braid. “It’s beautiful and unique just like you, but every once in a while, you need to rediscover yourself. I love you. You are very fabulous, but you look like you’re living in the dark ages. At least think about cutting it? Just go and bask in the glory of self-indulgence. Get your nails done and get a facial. They can even give up make up tips and show you some chic hairstyles. You deserve some relaxation. Plus, you’ve had that gift card for over a year. Those things do expire. The girls will be fine. I brought my Ipad and my portable speakers. We’re starting their dancing lessons today. It’s never too soon to get your groove on. Now go, get out of here.” She snapped her finger and brought her hands to her hips. “Go, and don’t come back until you’re a new woman!” Karen handed her a list with lunch foods, nap times, her cell phone number, the police and fire departments, and every other possible emergency number she could think of. Feeling reluctant and unsure, she kissed the girls and ventured out. As she drove, she giggled to herself. The past three years had been so confusing and oddly unexpected. Her nickname “Silly Girl” fit her perfectly. Once a true believer in women’s intuition, she’d found out the hard way that it was nothing but nonsense. The entire time she’d been pregnant she had been sure she was having a boy - not just sure; she had been positive. She had even declined a sonogram several times. Her doctor had laughed, as she proclaimed to know the gender of her baby. She had told everyone it was a big baby boy, and she had purchased only blue clothing and blankets. Her intuition was so definite that all of her family and friends had believed her as well. Every single gift she had received was for a boy. When she gave birth to beautiful, twin girls, she had been thrilled, but utterly shocked. She admittedly felt a little foolish, no, a lot foolish. Everyone had really had a good laugh. She had been teased for weeks and weeks. And someday the girls would probably hear the crazy story as well. Nancy had given her the nickname, “Silly Girl,” and everyone seemed to love it. She exhaled and turned on the radio. Why had she felt that way? What was her problem? The mystery of it still plagued her. What an utter embarrassment. Yes, she really was a silly girl!

As she drove toward the day spa and salon, she continued to question herself. All of her life, even as a small girl, she had pictured herself with a baby boy. It was so confusing. After the birth of the twins, she had gotten an infection, and would never be able to have any more children. It had been a painful realization that she would never have the boy she had dreamt of. She thanked God every day for the girls. She loved them with all of her heart, but, for some reason there was an empty spot in her soul that she couldn’t explain to anyone not even herself. As she listened to relaxing classical music, Karen abruptly realized that she was lost. All the old brick buildings looked the same, and she wasn’t anywhere near the salon. She glanced at her watch and she was already ten minutes late for her appointment. She stopped at a red light and looked in every direction for something familiar, and noticed a large antique shop. There was a portion of a white picket fence outside and an old worn school desk, windowpanes, rusted buckets, and a vintage bicycle. The wooden “Open” sign was very old and hung inside the store next to a faded American flag. The soft lighting inside gave it a welcoming glow. It beckoned her to come in and explore. Her stomach fluttered and goose bumps rose on her arms. She knew that she had to go inside. As she entered the shop an elderly woman with a kind smile greeted her. “Hello, Honey. Can I help you find anything today?” Karen waved a hand. “Oh, no. I’m just looking, quickly. Quickly looking,” she replied in a foreign, shaky voice. What was wrong with her? The woman nodded. “You make yourself right at home. There are a lot of things you’ll want to see. I’ll be right here if you need me.” Karen relaxed. She felt welcomed. The room was extremely crowded. She could barely walk. There were glass bottles of every shape and size, and old tables with scratches from unknown people. There were pillows and pictures, hats and jewelry, boots and candles, tea cups and dishes. The shop was perfectly warm and smelled wonderfully musty with tiny hint of cinnamon. She carefully touched plates, iron buckets, silver bowls, lace handkerchiefs, silver spoons, and many other unique items. She felt a familiar presence here. These were personal items, which people had treasured. They carried grand stories and had seen different times and interesting places. Her curiosity was peaked. It all seemed so intimate. But she also felt an odd belonging, an unexplainable hominess. Ever so slowly, she made her way through the tranquil room. She felt compelled to examine each wondrous item. As she reached the back of the store, she noticed a tiny corner booth, which was illuminated by a hanging chandelier. The area was almost glowing. It called to her. She entered the booth and saw a magnificent blue gown on a life-size mannequin. It had an extremely high neck with a small black cameo pinned to the front. White pearls made a square shape across the chest area. The sleeves puffed out near the shoulders and then came back in at the elbow. The bottom seemed to stand out as if a petticoat were underneath. A navy blue rope was draped around the bottom. Pink beads circled the waistline. As she embraced the vision, she could not breathe. It was magnificent. There was something novel about this gown. She couldn’t take another step. It was frightening, yet inviting. She shouted to the front of the store. “Excuse me, Ma’am. May I try this on?” The woman hurried to the back of the store, stopped and studied Karen. “Yes, yes, I think you should.” She carefully removed the perfectly preserved gown, then faced Karen and presented it with her arms stretched out, in a rather formal manner. As Karen took the gown, a wave of déjà-vu engulfed her. She steadied her feet. The dress was heavy but soft, and lush, oh, so lovely. The woman motioned for Karen to follow her. Carrying it like a helpless child, she located a teeny dressing room with an enormous vintage mirror inside. It was enclosed by a burgundy, velvet window panel. As she pulled the panel closed, she felt nervous and frightened, but elated at the same time. She quickly undressed and cautiously put on the antique gown. Shockingly, it fit her like a glove. The neckline was perfection. The hemline was right on the floor. Karen stared dumbfounded at her reflection. She felt frozen, unable to move. Then she heard the woman’s voice. “My Dear, I brought you the shoes.”

Karen’s brows creased. There was no way the shoes would fit. The woman handed them in, through the side of the panel. She sat down and stared at the shoes. Suddenly, she knew they would indeed fit. It terrified her, but she had to know for sure. As her fingers shook, she placed each delicate blue slipper on each foot. They had been worn many, many times. They had walked on cobblestone streets, squeaky wooden floors, green grass, and muddy paths. She could see the steps. She could see the dainty shoes moving along happily. Standing, she gazed in the mirror. She moved her long braid to the side of her neck. Her body began trembling. She looked unbelievable but somehow totally believable. Something very mysterious was happening here. She couldn’t blink her eyes because the blissful vision might disappear. Maybe this was a dream. She glanced down at her cell phone perched against her purse. No. This was actually happening. This vision was real, and the vision was her. She stood unmoving-calm, taking in her presence, remembering music and laughter, rain and sunshine, crisp leaves and chilly evenings. The sound of a phone ringing somewhere in the distance jolted her back to reality. She wasn’t sure how long she had been standing there, but suddenly she had to see what else was in that area of the store. She swallowed hard. Was there something else there, something of importance to her? Still wearing the dress, Karen made her way back to the softly lit corner. As she peered in, her eyes darted to a medium sized portrait that almost floated on the wall. The gold frame was scraped and tattered. A thick layer of dust covered it, but she could make out tiny green eyes in the portrait. She knew those eyes. She rushed over and urgently cleaned it with the sleeve of her dress. A gasp escaped her. There in the alabaster glow of a crystal lamp, she saw a painting of herself. She was wearing this exact blue dress. Her hair hanging long at her side, braided exactly as it was now. A little boy, about three years old, wearing white socks, blue knickers, a white shirt, and a black bow tie was sitting on her lap. His green eyes sang to her heart. Her arms were placed lovingly around his waist. She remembered that he didn’t like to sit still for anything. He was so full of energy. Chuckling, she remembered him balking and complaining as the artist had worked. Tears cascaded down her face. Suddenly she noticed that the portrait was dated 1902. Her heart seemed to stop beating. Her knees buckled, and she slowly crumbled to the floor. When Karen awoke there was a soft pillow beneath her head and an ice pack on her forehead. She was still wearing the dress, and it was arranged perfectly around her. She felt exhausted. The storeowner was sitting in a rocking chair smiling at her. “Ah, you’re awake. My dear, are you okay?” Unsure, Karen could not answer. She turned her head toward the painting and beheld the vision again. There he was, the rambunctious little boy of her dreams. A slow smile spread across her lips. He was perfect. He was adorable. How could she have ever forgotten his sweet face? For several minutes she just lay there, tears of recollection seeping from her eyes. She adored every detail of the wondrous painting and the memories she had of its conception. She concentrated hard but couldn’t remember much else about that life. She did feel deep in her soul that it had been a happy life, and she knew that this precious boy had brought her immense joy. She wiped away her tears and sat up. The details didn’t matter. Her soul remembered him. He had been real. And although she was lying on an antique shop floor, she knew that maybe she was not so silly after all. She stood up in the familiar gown and slippers, and felt rejuvenated. The store owner grinned at her. “So, you’ve come for your things, have you?” Karen nodded.

For several hours, Karen sifted through the items in the booth. She found a few pieces of familiar jewelry, but the twins were going to need new car seats soon, and she couldn’t afford to spend too much. And she knew it wouldn’t be right to take it all home with her, as much as she wanted to. After pondering for a few moments, she decided to take only the dress and the painting. There was no way she could leave them here. They were a part of her. She vowed never to show anyone, ever. It was beyond unexplainable. They would be her special possessions - her bond with her past. It was a gift, finding the painting of the boy whom she’d loved so much. He had been a presence in her mind for a long time, maybe forever. She knew now that he would always be in her heart, and now she had a real remembrance of him. She looked in the mirror, and even though she looked the same, she was different, very different. It was like her soul had experienced a makeover. Now, she could enjoy her own life to the fullest. She was free to change her hair or anything she wished. She would not remain stuck in the past. There were no more confusing, unanswered feelings inside her. She would go to the salon. She would get several inches of her hair cut and maybe some highlights, maybe some bangs. She felt enlightened. She was already a new woman. Now she understood why so many people frequented antique shops. Karen approached the storeowner carrying the dress and the portrait. “Thank you so much for your help.” She reached out and touched the woman’s hand. “You’ve been so compassionate and understanding. How much do I owe you?” The storeowner rubbed Karen’s cheek. “Not a dime, Honey. They’re your things. Be content in the secret you’ve discovered.” “I will.” Grateful, Karen wiped her wet cheeks and realized she was weeping again, tears of joy. She carefully picked up her treasures and then met the eyes of the storeowner. “Does this happen very often?” The woman rubbed her chin, thoughtfully. “More than you’d imagine. Sometimes the stars align just right and questions are answered and puzzle pieces come together. Lucky me, I get to witness it. You have a blessed day.” Karen exhaled. “I already have.” THE END Shelly Gail Morris Nolensville Author Shelly Gail Morris was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Romantic Disney Getaway t’s February and romance is in the air. Winter has taken over and perhaps you’ve thought about escaping the cold to warm breezes and sandy beaches. Many destinations come to mind, but have you thought about a Walt Disney World vacation? Yes, Walt Disney World is filled with dainty princesses and dueling pirates, spinning teacups and adventurous jungle expeditions. Did you know Walt Disney World also offers romantic fine dining, relaxing spa experiences, and dynamic night time entertainment? Disney is not just for families. In fact, each year Honeymooners (affectionately nicknamed “Disneymooners”) flock to Walt Disney World to celebrate their nuptials. At check in, they are given free “Happily Ever After” buttons to wear proudly and announce their celebration to the world. So how can you create a romantic Walt Disney World vacation? Here are 5 easy steps to help you get started! Pick a date when the majority of schools are in session. Stay away from summer months (June through August), all major holiday weeks, and spring break (generally the week before and after Easter). Not only will this minimize the amount of children running by you on your trip, but it will also mean less crowds in general. Less crowds equals less waiting! Pick a hotel that suits your personality. Disney classifies their 27 hotels into 4 categories. The category you choose will be greatly influenced by your budget, but every category will have something to offer your romantic side! ◆ Deluxe Villas - These themed resorts are connected to Deluxe resorts but offer more space and home comforts. Multiple rooms, kitchens, and in-room laundry are just some of the amenities. The villas are a part of Disney’s Vacation Club (similar to a timeshare). Just be aware that these do not offer normal housekeeping services. Typically, housekeeping only comes every 4 days however guests can pay for additional services. ◆ Deluxe Resorts - These themed resorts can offer romantic settings, multiple dining experiences, convenience to theme parks, and multiple recreational opportunities. ◆ Moderate Resorts - These resorts also offer romantic settings, one sit-down restaurant experience, and recreational opportunities but are generally more budget friendly. ◆ Value Resorts - These resorts are great for those on a budget or people who plan to be in the parks from open to close and want a place to crash at the end of a busy day.

Next, add in some phenomenal dining experiences. Starting 180 days (6 months) before your trip, you will want to make Advanced Dining Reservations at some of these exceptional restaurants. Many will tell you Victoria & Alberts is the ultimate in romance & fine dining on Disney property. California Grill sits atop the Contemporary Resort with breathtaking views, extensive wine lists, mouth watering cuisine. Epcot’s World Showcase offers multiple restaurants representing 11 countries. It’s a great time to try out your adventurous palate! The list goes on and on! Add in some extras! Schedule a massage at Senses Day spa. Spend a few hours on one of Walt Disney World’s four golf courses. Try your hand at race car driving, parasailing, horseback riding, or fishing. Get some behind-the-scenes tours at the parks. Or just hang out in a hammock at your resort or lounge by the pool. The choice is yours! Finally check out some of the special events going on throughout the year around Walt Disney World Resort. In the spring, Epcot is beautifully transformed for the Flower and Garden Festival. Summer offers Star Wars Weekends at Hollywood Studios. Add some more flavor to your life in the fall at Epcot’s Food & Wine Festival or bring out your creative side at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party in Magic Kingdom. If Christmas is your favorite time of year, then celebrate at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in Magic Kingdom! Yes Disney World is an amazing fun filled destination for families. But it’s also a great destinations for grown ups! “Adults are only grown up kids anyway” - Walter Elias Disney

Mardi Gras

What a great time of year! If you live close to Louisiana, there is a pretty good chance this is something you participate in and look forward to every year. Many have great and go to fabulous parties, balls and of course we cannot forget about the parades! The first Mardi Gras parade was held in New Orleans on Feb. 24, 1857 My favorite part is the Mardi Gras King Cake! There are many versions of this sweet treat. In Nashville we can only get the cinnamon roll version. In Louisiana I have had the “doughnut version. Still looks like a cinnamon roll but actually fried like a doughnut. 100% delicious! This year Mardi Gras falls on February 17th, also Fat Tuesday. The date varies every year as it coincides with Ash Wednesday and of course depends on when Easter holiday falls each year. It is scheduled 47 days before Easter. If your town does not celebrate Mardi Gras, it does not mean you cannot start this celebration with your family and friends. You can host your own Mardi Gras party. If your local party supply store does not carry Mardi Gras decor, you can easily order online. There are so many great and fun suppliers. Do not forget your beads, coins and especially your mask. There are simple masks to very elaborate. The traditional mardi gras colors are purple, green and gold (or yellow). There is a good chance your local bakery will make a decorated king cake for you. But if not we have a recipe for you to make your own. There is the traditional baby that is hidden inside the cake after is is baked. The general rule is that whoever gets the baby in their slice of cake, gets to host the next party or buy the next king cake. The king cake tradition was started as a celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany. the coming of the wise men bearing gifts to the Christ Child. Enjoy your Mardi Gras celebration, especially if this will be your first!

Trouble managing your time..... ? One of the many stresses of everyday life is not having enough time in the day. Or worse, not getting enough sleep at night, so you can try to get everything done. I have learned over the years, lack of sleep can lead to a very unproductive day. So how do we get more time in our day? Managing our time a bit better. I have a big rule, it was my takeaway from a time management conference. If something will take you 5 minutes or less to do, do it right then rather than adding to your “to do pile and risk never getting to it. Answer that email as soon as you read, if it is a quick reply. How many times have you finally tackled a project and when done, thought that did not take me anytime once I sat down, and I should have done long time ago. School or Work Commuter? Use your driving time as thinking time, to plan the rest of your day. Prioritize what needs to be done first, decide which projects gets priority. Be realistic, if it cannot all get done, something will have to wait. If you sit down and say, oh I need to go do this or that. Could you have actually done it in the amount of time it took to sit down and think about what you needed to do? My rule is do not complain about what you have to do, just go do it. Many times, I look at my house as a whole, and think I can never get this house clean in the little time that I have. But as I get ready in the morning, I can clean parts of the bathroom as I go along. I start a load of wash, take one child to school, return, put clothes in dryer and then take the other to school. I manage to get 2 loads of laundry done in just a matter of minutes of my time vs sitting and washing clothes all day. Lysol wipes can be your friend. Keep those handy in all bathrooms and kitchens for quick clean ups. As I cook dinner, I clean as I cook. I keep a sink of hot soapy water and place items in the sink as I am finished, let them soak for a bit and then load into the dishwasher. By the time dinner is on the table, everything is in the dishwasher except for the dishes on the table and lunches are packed in the refrigerator for the next day. The worst feeling is to be tired from a long day and then have to get up from the dinner table and have a whole kitchen to clean. Most important tip take time for you! Even if it is a few minutes of quiet time to enjoy your hot tea or coffee.

For the Love of Mason Jars We have shared our love for Mason jars many times. There is always room for another Mason jar project. A simple strip of Burlap and tule can dress up a jar of flowers from a local florist or even your garden. Just in time for Valentine’s, adding a paper doily to a Mason jar with pink or red ribbon will make a fun project for little ones. This will make a sweet teachers gift. She can reuse the jar for future flowers brought into her classroom. She can even keep on her desk to hold her pencils and pens. Also a wonderful gift for grandma or a neighbor friend. If you do not already have burlap on hand, they sell wide burlap ribbon. This is cleaner than buying bulk burlap and cutting. Cut your burlap or ribbon after measuring the diameter of your jar. Simply hot glue the inside and wrap around the jar. Take your choice of tule or ribbon and tie around to hold in place while drying. You can embellish with beads, rhinestones, pearls, even buttons. For the pretty jar with a doily,: Take 2 pieces of doily. Cut one in half to wrap around your jar, and hold in place with your pretty ribbon. Embellish as you please. Place your second doily underneath for a nice display. Do not glue as the doily may get wet an may need to be replaced if used as a vase again in the future. Happy Valentines!

Beat the Winter Blues with Flowers What is it about flowers that brightens every room, and lifts the spirits? The fragrance, the soft pinks, the bright yellows. Whatever it is, it is definitely a mood lifter. Studies have shown that flowers lifts morning blahs, and even increases work productivity. I definitely could agree to that even without a scientific study! Winter blues can be brightened just by a few flowers placed here and there. Flowers for many are not available in the backyard gardens year round. But, you can always find flowers at the florist or for almost everyone, in your local grocery store. Flowers in a bedroom, especially if you have guest visiting, make a bedroom feel more comfortable. Flowers make a kitchen more welcoming. It does not have to be roses. Daisy’s, which come in many different varieties, and carnations seem to last much longer than traditional roses. Many times you will find a bunch of flowers with clearance price Only a few are wilted. You can salvage the rest of the bouquet and have a lovely very affordable arrangement. Purchase one big bouquet and separate into several small arrangements. Better, share a few flowers from that arrangement with a friend, a next door neighbor who might use the “lift”.

You can be creative with your flower arranging. It is fun to use vintage items like old teapots, or even a newer teapot you may not use as often. Old water cans or buckets can be repurposed as flower containers. Make a fun colorful focal point in a room with vintage pieces and flowers. For our thrift shoppers and garage sale fans, you can easily find so many items that can be turned into vases and will make beautiful arrangements. Not too mention the savings over traditional vases or containers Bright colors work well also. Here are a few tips to keep your flowers fresh longer: Use cold water in the vase. Warm water will open the flowers quicker . Place them in a cool spot away from any heating vents. Cut roses and flowers back a few inches so they will draw water. Remove excess leaves so they don’t need extra water. Cut at an angle, under water vs. in the open air. This will allow them to draw in water 1st and not air. Add clear soda or sugar to the water. Crushed aspirin works well also. Get your spring flower beds started soon so that you can grow your own arrangements. Best tip of all - Enjoy the beauty of our your fresh arrangement!

Coffee or Tea ? Coffee and hot tea both are popular in america. So many gourmet coffee shops popping up over the years that caters to both the coffee and tea lovers. But what is your preference? I personally love both. Coffee brings many together. I remember when we were very little, my parents and grandparents would go to visit and “go have coffee and friends and relatives home. Now it tends to draw people together and coffee shops. Great that in our busy lives we can still stop for coffee and conversation. Or, for the business minded, business meetings are held at local coffee shops. Hot tea is so soothing on a winter day. Luckily with the popularity of both beverages there are great health benefits with both. Did you have tea parties when you were little? I do not recall having a tea party set, but attended a few of my little friends tea parties. Well you know it is never too late to host that tea party. Tea is a great excuse to get the girls together now. If you have never had an tea party as an adult, they are quite fun. A great reason to get the best china out. Do not have any china? You can head to your local thrift, resell or antique shop and you can get several pieces at a great price. The new rule is, you do not have to match your vintage pieces. You can get several different patterns a piece together a nice little tea set. Pick up a vintage platter or two for your serving pieces. Various teacups and saucers, and if you can kid that perfect teapot, grab it! Who will you invite? Get your guest list together and send out your invitation so that your guests can get your special party date on their calendar. So next you have to plan your menu. Tea is not suppose to cause stress, so make it simple for your first party. You can make some tasty finger sandwiches, cookies or cupcakes. Of course, do not forget the tea! There are so many wonderful teas available. Loose tea is preferred by many. You might want to have a variety of teas available. Not quite ready to have your first party? You can still grab a few friends, get together and just enjoy each others company over coffee!

Shabby Lane in

Nolensville

We love our new shop! We opened our doors with great enthusiasm May 2nd and have not looked back! It has been an incredible few months We carried our online shopping mall a bit further and created our own shop, selling our clients products. We have over 40 artist and merchants that have come together to create this amazing shop! We support small business! This has allowed us to support small businesses even more. Alone we could not have done this. It has taken everyone of our clients to make this possible. Location, location, location! Yes we have the perfect location, but it was not easy. We knew the town we wanted to be in, small, quaint, but beautiful! We hit several dead ends, each time knowing things absolutely happen for a reason. When a door shuts, there is a reason, and I always accept that. Fighting that door, can lead to problems. And as the saying goes, another one opens. And our door opened wide! Now our doors are open 7 days a week! We have 1700 square feet in the Historic District of Nolensville, TN. We are located next door to the Feed Mill, also referred to as the Amish Country Market. They have wonderful food, incredible deli sandwiches, local grown produce. A famous breakfast buffet on Saturdays.

We have many great neighbors in the historic district. We feel so blessed to be a part of this great community! When you stop in, be sure and visit all the great shops and our friends, Village Antiques and Gifts, Roses and Rustics, the Tanner House, Three French Hens, Peacock Lane, Nolensville The Barn, Nolensville Toy Shop & more! Great food at the Feed Mill/Amish Market place and Nana’s Diner. Make a day of it! It will be a great day for sure! Here is a peek into our shop. We hope you enjoy the tour!
