What is on your Late Summer and Fall To do List? This late in the summer, there are still great things to do! There is still time to travel! Many that do not have school age children, travel late in the summer, weather is still great and prices drop and better yet, the crowds are not quite as large. Money saving travel tips: Try to book accommodations that have a kitchen, mini kitchen or at least a refrigerator and microwave. Eating in your room one to 2 times a day can save so much money. A family of four can easily save $100 a day by eating in your room or vacation condo. Many times a condo is more affordable than a hotel, especially when factoring in “eating in” vs. “eating out” expense. We travel quite a bit and packing a lunch and eating a picnic on the beach, by the pool or in the mountains, etc., is not only fun, but saves lots of money! We always pack breakfast & lunch to eat as we are starting our drive to our vacation as we are not fond of fast food, and always gets us to our destination much faster! So we can start enjoying our vacation. If you decide to eat out for one meal, lunch is a good option as many times during the week there are lunch specials, or a special priced lunch menu. Another money saving tip that can add up: Order water instead of tea or soda. Some glasses of tea or soda in restaurants can be $3 a glass. If you have 4 adults in your party that can be an added $12 to each meal. For children, sometimes ordering an adult entree and splitting that meal can be more affordable than purchasing 2 kids meals. Staycations are great! Living in Nashville for over 10 years there are still attractions that we have not visited. And those places that we have visited, we always enjoy going back each year. I was here for a couple of years before I discovered Tennessee waterfalls that are just a short drive away. The falls (waterfalls) are beautiful during the fall season. It involves a hike, so cooler weather makes the hike much easier! Check your local area for museums, parks and attractions to visit. Catherine Monceaux Shabby Lane Shops

Summer Memories Did you have a wonderful vacation? Do you want to make those memories last all year? You come back from vacation with so many wonderful memories and great feelings, Decorate with your memories! Beach memories are great and easy to decorate with. Decorate with the seashell souvenirs that you collected yourself, or purchase seashells. Sea stars are so pretty. There are so many different varieties. You can find these at your local craft store. You can select a room, to decorate or even just a wall. Paint a wall to go along with your coastal theme. Place coastal theme jars embellished or filled with your seashells. You can even glue your seashells on picture frames and place your vacation pictures in the frames. Maybe you want to take a more simple route and make a shadow box with those seashells and your fun vacation pictures. You can be as creative as you want. You can even carry this theme through the holidays. A white Christmas tree with seashells and blue color Christmas balls and white lights would be stunning! Whatever vacation theme you use, be creative and have fun. Relive those vacation memories every time you enter the room! Catherine Monceaux

The Jordan Bridge at Pioneer Park Stayton, Oregon

The Covered Bridges of Oregon In my own backyard of the Pacific Northwest there are some amazing historical covered bridges. A sunny day and a back road country drive along with a picnic lunch makes for a perfect scenic tour though the lush Willamette Valley. Oregon has the largest collection of covered bridges in the west. Linn, Douglas and Lane Counties have most of them. Beginning in the 1850’s, this type of bridge was built in Oregon because the Douglas Fir timber was cheap and readily available here and concrete was expensive to obtain. To increase the life of these wood bridges, houses were constructed over the timber trusses to protect them from the damp western Oregon climate. Most of the bridges were built between 1905 and 1925 with an estimated 600 covered bridges in the state. Through the years most fell in disrepair and were removed. By 1977 there were only 56 left. Of those, some were restored or moved to different locations such as parks for all to enjoy. They are especially popular for weddings and other special events. Most of them you can drive through. The large picture is the Jordan bridge, just in the next town from where I live. It was built in 1937 over Thomas Creek in Linn county Oregon and moved in the 1980’s to Stayton Pioneer park. Rarely does a summer weekend go by that there is not a beautiful wedding happening at the bridge. Debbi Oeltjen MarionberryCottage.com

Playing around with Letters Supply List: Chip board letter Scrapbook paper, (cardstock, but tissue paper would also work) Modge Podge Scissors or an Exacto knife Craft paint and sponge Sand paper, fine Decorations Hot Glue Gun Have you ever wandered around the craft stores and seen the large letters not knowing what to do with them, but finding them interesting and wanting to “do” something fun. This has happened to me and one day I just decided to buy a letter and see what would come of it. I thought we could play with this craft together and in the end, I like what I created. Because my name starts with the letter C, I choose it. The first thing I did was to choose the paper for the front of the letter. Once that task is done, you can get a matching paint for the sides and back. I painted the back first, two coats and then the sides, if you get paint on the front, don’t worry about it, the paper will cover it all up. After all your paint has dried, lay out your paper over the top of the letter and check to see where the seams will match up. If you have a paper with a pattern that makes this difficult, don’t worry, you can cover the seams with lace, ribbon or anything else you choose to use. I was able to match my paper without any problems, it’s almost like matching wall paper seams. Once you are happy with the placement of the paper, go ahead and cover your letter with the Modge Podge, then layer your papers on top and let dry. Be sure to smooth out the paper using your fingers, or a rolling pin. You don’t want to have any folds or creases if possible.

When the paper has dried, you can use your scissors or an Exacto knife to cut out around the letter. If using scissors, cut as close as you can to your letter. I went back and lightly sanded with a fine sandpaper all around the edges just to make sure they were smooth, but you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. Modge Podge the whole letter, making sure to completely dry in between coats. I did three coats altogether. If you look closely at my letter C, you will see the edges are darker and that is because I used a dobber and some distress ink to darken the edges. I just personally like that look, but it’s not necessary. The last step is where the fun begins and that is to decorate your letter with whatever you want. I started close to the top with ribbons I tied into bows. I glued them onto the letter and began to build from there using my flowers. Some were silks I had in my stash and some were roses. Don’t be afraid to add lace, buttons, or any type of embellishments you might have. I thought it would be cute to use a birds nest I had had for several years and place it on the inside of the letter. I see many nests that are placed on signs this way and liked the idea. I didn’t want to leave the nest plan, so I placed other flowers and leaves around it. I am very happy with the way the letter “C” came out and plan on hanging it from a hook in my work space. I am happy you came along with me on this journey and I hope you will try your own letter, and see what you can create with it. Enjoy!!! Charlotte Peterson Someplaceinthyme.com

Wining with Cindy

B. Lovely! I loved this label when I saw this. The name, the graphics, the color! I thought, what food can I pair with this lovely wine. A late harvest rieslingI knew would be on the sweet side but I knew I could think of something delicious, light and crisp. Chef Robert helped me plan a lovely menu for this warm summer dinner. The wine bottle describes this wine as this, B.sincere, B.generous, B.Gracious, B.Lovely We can’t be lovely all the time, but our wine certainly should be. Refreshing and clean with a hint of sweetness. B.lovely late harvest riesling will charm with irresistible flavor and balance in every sip. For our menu, I decided to pair this with a cold cucumber soup to start. A crisp little salad of bell peppers, red, orange and yellow, red onion, lettuce, and some warm shrimp, with a light vinaigrette came next. For the entree, we decided on poached sea bass with basil and tomato. Dessert was champagne sorbet, with berries, and white chocolate flakes. We thought this was a lovely wine for all of our choices! Warm summer nights, light food, and a lovely wine. I am looking forward to more wines from this lovely winery in Washington state called B.Lovely! I hope you enjoy this too!

Delicious French Onion Soup Extra Healthy French Onion Soup Super Easy in a Crock Pot or Induction Burner “Newest thing for Cooking” With Red Onions Too! Mine looks just like this picture I found! In the busy world we live in, we love easy and quick! One of my favorite things to eat all year round is French Onion soup. It’s delicious and healthy and French! Recently studies by Dr. William Li, have shown that eating ½ cup of red onions a day can help prevent cancer by 90%. I was thrilled to learn this so I traded ½ of the yellow onions for the red. This recipe is really good, even better with a chilled glass of Chardonnay, or an ice cold beer! French Onion Soup with Red Onions. 4 onions thinly sliced 2 red 2 white ¼ cup butter 3 cups beef stock 1 cup Sherry Medium Dry 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce 1 garlic clove minced 6 slices French Bread buttered ¼ cup Romano or parmesan cheese Using a large frying pan, slowly sauté the onions in butter until limp and glazed. End-of-Summer Grilling As summer winds down, I thought I’d share some of my favorite recipes for the grill – the ones I make sure we fix at least one last time before the grill is put away for the season. Grilled Salmon with Wine Sauce ½ tsp salt 1 tsp minced garlic 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper (divided) 2 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp olive oil 6 salmon fillets (about 6 ounces each) 2 tbsp butter 1 tbsp flour ½ tsp paprika ¾ cup milk 2 tbsp dijon mustard ¼ cup dry white wine 1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary leaves 1 tsp chopped fresh basil leaves Fire up the grill for high heat (450° to 550°) In a small bowl, combine salt, garlic, 1/2 tsp pepper, oil, lemon juice, and oil. Brush mixture over salmon. Cook, turning once, until done the way you like, approximately 6 minutes for average thickness fillets. Using a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in flour; cook until the mixture starts to brown. Whisk in remaining 1/2 tsp pepper, milk, mustard, paprika, wine, and 3 tbsp water. Simmer, then spoon the mixture over salmon fillets and sprinkle with the herbs. Serves 6.

Veggies on the grill 1 yellow squash, cut in half then slice lengthwise 2 zucchini, cut in half then slice lengthwise 1 sweet onion cut into thin wedges 1 red bell pepper cut into large pieces 2 tbsp white balsamic vinegar

3 tbsp olive oil ½ tsp salt (optional) 1/8 tsp. Freshly ground black pepper ¼ fresh chopped basil 4 ounces crumbled goat cheese

In a large bowl, combine the squash, onion, zucchini and bell pepper.

Drizzle with 1 tbsp olive oil and toss to coat. Grill over medium-high heat (about 350 – 400 degrees) for 10 to 12 minutes or until they reach your desired doneness. Turn once while cooking. Grill, uncovered, over medium-high heat (350º to 400º) for 10 to 12 minutes, turning once, or until just tender. Whisk together the salt, pepper and vinegar in a large bowl. Slowly whisk in remaining 2 tbsp olive oil and add to the grilled vegetables and basil, tossing to coat. Sprinkle with goat cheese right before serving. Serves about 4 – 6.

Cherry Cobbler with Pound Cake 6 cups fresh or frozen unsweetened pitted tart red cherries ½ cup regular sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch ¼ tsp almond extract Half of an 8 ounce package cream cheese, softened 2 tbsp brown sugar (packed) 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp butter, melted one 10 ¾ ounce frozen pound cake (loaf) thawed and crumbled (coursely)

In a large saucepan combine regular sugar and cornstarch then stir in cherries. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture thickens and becomes bubbly. Remove from heat; stir in almond extract. In a small bowl beat together brown sugar, cream cheese, and lemon juice with an electric mixer on low to medium speed just until smooth. Spoon approximately half of the fruit mixture into a disposable foil pan (2 quart size). Place dollops of the cream cheese mixture over the fruit mixture in the foil pan. Spoon remaining fruit mixture over the cream cheese mixture. Cover pan with aluminum foil and wrap tightly. Charcoal grill needs to have medium-hot coals, arrange coals around the outside of grill and place the foil pan on the rack in the center of grill. Cover and cook for 15 minutes. Uncover and sprinkle the top of fruit mixture with cake pieces; drizzle with butter. Leave mixture uncovered, place lid back on the grill and cook for 10 minutes. If using a gas grill, preheat and then reduce heat to medium and adjust for indirect cooking. Then place the foil pan on the grill rack over the burner that is off; follow the rest of the instructions for the charcoal grill. Cool on wire rack for approximately 30 minutes and serve warm. Serves about 6.

Love Grilled Cheese? Who does not love a great grilled cheese? Is there a bad grilled cheese? Yes! I consider myself a grilled cheese expert. And if a grilled cheese is not prepared properly, you can set yourself up for real disappointment! I am so thrilled that one of my children shares my grilled cheese addiction! Grilled cheese is not just for kids! I assumed everyone knew how to make a grilled cheese sandwich. I am still amazed that a grilled cheese recipe is on the back of a national cheese brand package. It is a very basic grilled cheese recipe. So maybe not everyone knows how to make one. So I thought I would share how I make the perfect grilled cheese. You will need: 1 stick of butter real cheddar cheese slices (not processed cheese food!) 2 slices of your favorite bread, wheat or sourdough makes it extra yummy! skillet Place your skillet on the stove, preheat skillet on medium heat. Take your stick of butter, do not butter the bread, but rub your stick of butter on the hot skillet . Then place each piece of bread in the melted butter. Place once slice of bread down on skillet, then 1 -2 slices of cheddar cheese on the bread (depending on your level of cheesiness) Place the other slice of bread on top -Turn your burner to medium low, you do not want to get the bread toasted too much before the cheese starts to melt. Once desired browning of your bread has been acheived, flip sandwich. Very important, do not smash the sandwich down! Once browned and cheese has melted you are done! You can do the same on a panini grill, but skip the butter, and of course you can add, tomato, spinach, ham, chicken, provolone or cheddar to make you very own creation! Benefits of a Packed Lunch Do you take your lunch to work or school? There are so many great benefits of bringing your lunch. Health benefits, as you are able to bring healthy and nutritious items vs. fast food. Financial benefits, as you can save so much money each day. The savings added up over a year is huge! Hard to buy a lunch for $5, but if you could that is $25 a week (work week), $1300 a year! I believe $7 - $10 a day would be a bit more realistic, which would be $2600 a year! My father brought his lunch to work every day with out fail, for over 35 years. I always did, and still do when I am working outside my home. My thinking is, I would rather take that $10 - $15 (do not forget to tip) and put that towards eating out with my family. You can be creative with your lunch. Most workplaces have refrigerators and mini kitchens where you can bring in leftovers from the night before and reheat. Do take time away from your desk to eat. If you do not have a nice lunch room to sit in, try a lunch picnic outdoors, maybe at a local park. Or if you eat in your office, take a quick walk afterwards. So you do not have to give up every lunch out, try a few days. Think of all the money you will save! Christmas is around the corner, we can all use a litte extra money during the holidays! If you are retired, eating out occasionally is not bad. You worked hard for years, you deserve a day or night out! Just remember healthy choices. When packing your lunch chose a protein and at least 2 servings of fruits and vegetables. Fruit and nuts for snacks are great also. What ever you decide, your enjoy your lunch! Catheirne Monceaux

I have A Favorite Coffee Mug I also have home grown hot peppers lining my windowsill. That can only mean one thing. I am getting older—or just plain old. It’s hard to admit, but it’s true. And worst of all, I’m starting to like peaches. Oh, goodness what have I become? It wasn’t that long ago that I ate a piece of pizza, a few chips, an Oreo and a diet coke—for breakfast. Where has the time gone? Wrinkles have arrived along with the tummy. And there are reading glasses beside my bed, in the kitchen and at the bottom of my purse. Clearly the signs are all around me. But I try desperately to hang on to being young and feeling young. I am a Facebook girl. I listen to rap music, especially the remakes of the oldies. I try to say, ‘my bad,’ once in a while. But there’s just no denying it. I am not a sexy, young thang anymore. Whenever I begin to indulge in a little self-pity, all I have to do is call my best friend Missy. She had cancer when she was eighteen. She has a fabulous outlook on life. Whenever I moan and groan, she can set me straight with a ‘don’t go there’ eyebrow arch. I know what’s coming. “I’m just happy to be here,” is her regular reply. And what a good reply it is. It puts it all into perspective. Yes, my days of wearing low cut tight clothing are gone. But I get to watch my boys become men. It’s a complicated yet fascinating process. And now I get to take some time to do the things I’d put on hold for the last fifteen years. I’m not needed so much anymore. It’s not a bad thing. There’s no reason to lose your mind just because the sales girl in the hip hop shop totally ignores you. They know you’re too smart to buy that cheap crap. You’re more mature and you ain’t no fool. The beat goes on---you know what I mean. There are lots of us right there with you. Find a girlfriend who’s on the same page as you. Share you aging woes. Search for those things in life that make you feel young like-- girls trips, sequins, highlights, karaoke, comfortable shoes that look chic, digital photos, pets, Groovebook, and bargain shopping. You are not alone. We do still remember the words to My Sharona and still fantasize about dirty dancing with the late Patrick Swayze. Realize that it’s kinda nice to have a favorite robe and snug slippers. It’s comforting to have our tried and true box of recipes. I’m just sayin’. Small Victories Love is surrounding our lives despite the abundance of negative commentary we witness every single day. From shady politicians to the newest Hollywood starlet rumors abound. I wonder if I am the only one who is simply not interested. I am much more invested in becoming my best self so I can make a difference. The daily small victories I have observed in my life almost all revolve around grace. Max Lucado writes about grace as “the voice that calls us to change and then gives us the power to pull it off.” I love this. Becoming humbled or heartbroken by circumstances will bring us to this place every time. Relationship issues whether rooted in disagreements, divorce, or dysfunction challenge us to look inside ourselves. Inquiry helps us to determine what we might want to change. There are so many possibilities to the type of life we want to live and they all start inside. When I was in my twenties I thought I knew it all as I was raising two boys one right after the other. My joy came from my little boys; unfortunately, my marriage ended. One small victory I experienced years later was forgiving my sons’ father for his choice to not participate in their lives. This was difficult for me long after my boys’ acceptance of life on life’s terms. The first half of my adult life I spent working as a hairstylist. I quickly made the transition from worker bee to manager of a medium sized salon. I truly loved those days. Of course, my body ached from standing all day; however, the relationships built were wonderful. Helping people enhance their selfesteem was such a blessing. After years of this dream my rotator cuff needed repair and my shoulder was never the same. I could never return to my career. How do we find purpose and meaning in times of loss? The loss of my career catapulted me into a depression so dark I never thought I would recover. The small victory of this period of my life was enrollment into our local community college. Sometimes life forces us to find the blessing in the chaos. I met a lifelong friend and Professor Linda Vang, LCSW. Ms. Vang was a successful, single, middle-aged woman raising two boys. I immediately realized her faith in me was going to change my life. Ironically, life came full circle when she was assigned to visit me at home after my car accident six years later. We immediately reconnected and she was so proud of me for working on my master’s degree. Life is full of joy and sadness. In my experience every sadness has led me to an unexpected joy. My artwork fills my days with purpose. Acceptance of where I am on my journey gives me peace in my heart. Tiny miracles happen every day in our lives. Focus on these small victories or you just might miss them.

Scentimental Moments with Mimi

One thing Mimi inherited from her grandmother was a love of perfume. Mimi’s Granny had worked for years at the perfume counter in the Bonwit Teller store on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. The love of perfume ran in the family; Mimi’s mother had followed in Granny’s footsteps. She had worked in the mega cosmetic store which opened just steps away from where Bonwit’s had been located. It wasn’t just the scent that fascinated them; it was everything about perfume. The bottles sparkling in the light on a mirrored tray, the aura it could create, and most important the way it made a woman feel. Even the history and lore of some perfumes appealed to Mimi and her mother. They always looked forward to spending an afternoon with Granny as she sat in her blue velvet chair talking about her day at the perfume counter. Now that Granny’s gone, Mimi and her mom still spend time in the velvet chair talking about the power of perfume. Gwen’s Story Gwen was a hard-working single mom on a tight budget. She had been married to the wrong guy just long enough to have two little boys. After the divorce, Gwen went back to work as a teacher. She would be forever grateful that her parents insisted she graduate from college before getting married. Working full time and raising her two boys kept Gwen busy during the week. Weekends were usually filled with endless essays to grade. But as an English teacher, she was accustomed to grading papers. She was grateful to have a career that got her home when the kids got home. Spending summers with them was another bonus. Gwen’s social life was almost non-existent. Dating seemed to be a thing of the past. But Gwen believed everything would fall into place when the time was right. One day in the Teachers Lounge, Gwen read an article in a fashion magazine about how women had met their husbands. The story that caught her eye was about a young woman who decided to wear her mother’s perfume to work. She was caught in a downpour while making a mad dash for the bus. Drenching wet, she took the last seat on the bus and began blot away streaks of mascara that were running down her cheeks. Just as she was thinking to herself that she must have looked quite a sight, she heard a question from the man in the seat next to her.

“Excuse me. Are you wearing Shalimar?”

According to the article that was the beginning of a romance that led to a walk down the aisle. “As if it were just that simple,” Gwen said aloud to no one in particular. With that, the bell rang, signaling the end of the period. As she headed to class, Gwen decided that the author embellished her article. But Gwen’s mind would be changed.

About a month later on a sunny April Saturday, Gwen headed to the mall for some shopping. She needed new shoes for work. As she entered the department store, her head was turned by a sensuous, spicy Oriental fragrance with a note of warm vanilla. “Shalimar?” A sample card was handed to her by a well made up blonde with a spray bottle aimed and ready. Gwen liked the scent, so she offered her wrist. She was surprised at how much she liked it. She knew it had been around forever, but she expected it to smell old fashioned and weird. Instead she found it to be deep, mysterious and slightly addictive. Back in the parking lot, Gwen noticed that one of her tires was low. She decided to stop at the gas station to have it checked. The tire had a slow leak, so Gwen headed toward the waiting room while it was being fixed. She noticed a man turn as she walked by. He followed her to the waiting room.

“Excuse me. Are you wearing Shalimar?”

“Yes,” she said. Caught by surprise, she knew she must have looked like a deer caught in headlights. He smiled and moved closer. Gwen took a step back. Still smiling, he said, “Be careful. Shalimar is powerful.” Then, realizing that he alarmed her, he quickly backed away. Over his shoulder, he said, “Sorry, meant no harm, but my wife was wearing that when I asked her to marry me.” Gwen thought of that encounter as she drove to her Mom’s home to pick up the boys. Then she remembered the article she had read in the Teachers Lounge. As soon as she reached her Mom’s home, Gwen told her the story. Then she told her about the magazine article. “It’s so surprising to me that a scent could be that powerful.” “Well, Gwen, that might be why Shalimar has been around for so long. I remember hearing when I was young that MEN LOVE SHALIMAR.” “Really?” Gwen smelled the scent on her wrist once again. She decided that she liked it enough to buy a bottle as soon as she could afford it. She wanted to know if there was anything to this Shalimar magic. Three months later, Gwen had made Shalimar her signature fragrance. For the first time, she received comments about her fragrance. Women often recognized it and said things like “My mother wore that” or “My husband always liked it.” Men also recognized it. Gwen didn’t mind that people told her their mother or grandmother wore it. She didn’t really expect it to help her find a date or a husband. But what pleased her was the way she felt. The comments were all positive and always made her smile. She always felt good when she was wearing Shalimar. She couldn’t help but feel a little more confident. That alone was worth the price of the perfume. That and the fact that Jack Riley, the school athletic director, and her secret crush, had started eating lunch with her every day.

Miss Lulu Mae Rabbit! Introducing my very first one of a kind art doll...Miss Lulu Mae Rabbit! She is dressed and ready to be the belle of the ball! I have been sewing patterned rag dolls and doll clothes since I was a young girl. Sewing has always been my happy place. At times, it was a great source of supplementing my income. But I find the greatest joy is when I could make a doll for gift giving or a charitable donation. Over the years, I have purchased many art doll making books. I have watched tons of videos and read articles on creating an art doll, but I have never gone outside my comfort zone and actually made one myself, until now! I accepted a doll making challenge on Facebook with the Cloth Doll Artistry, titled Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend. The twist was to create an elegant 20 inch rabbit dressed for a charity ball in her finest ensemble and of course, her finest jewels! The best part of this challenge for me was sharing it with my three grandchildren. They were just as excited as I was watching her come alive! When I shared my gown sketch with them, my 11 year old granddaughter exclaimed...who knew you were a fashion designer! Exactly! Who knew! I think the biggest lesson for me in accepting this challenge and something I hope I have passed along to my grandchildren is you will never know what you can do until you just do it and never give up! They saw me go through many sketches, many trial and errors in creating a shoe, figuring out how to create an hour glass figure, and creating a my very first cuff bracelet out of a piece of leftover scrap of fabric! Needless to say, I thank God daily for my ability to create! Please check out my Facebook page, Creations by Honey. Sandy Gonzales

Remember When... Remember when ice cream was homemade and tasted so great, even after having to wait for an hour or more? All the great “ice cream socials” And then how wonderful it was when you were able to upgrade to the electric ice cream maker! The great news is you can still make homemade ice cream, and not entirely the old fashion way. There are the makers that actually have a bowl that goes in your freezer. Pull it out when you are ready to make the ice cream. No need for ice or salt! You can make smaller quantities if you want to make a small batch. They still sell the vintage inspired ones, with a few up to date features. So no excuse now, get you a vintage inspired ice cream maker and invite family and friends and have an old fashioned ice cream social! Remember the great soda fountains? Many were even in pharmacies. So many great memories! Having to go to the doctor as a child was not so bad, as you were almost guaranteed a trip to the pharmacy. As you waited for your prescription you were welcome to sit at the soda fountain for ice cream, coke float or even lunch. My favorite was the pimento cheese sandwich. They toasted the bread and added lettuce and tomato. Lime sherbert in a cone was always a special treat for me! I can remember the swivel bar stools. I can still feel myself spinning on those stools! Remember when postage was affordable? Remember when people wrote letters and thank you notes? You still do? Well good for you! It is perfectly fine to still send hand written notes! If you have not give it a try. Teach your children and grandchildren to do the same. At the very least, make sure you send thank you cards. A thank you goes a very long way! Christmas cards are always so great to receive and give. I love the ones with family photos, as many we do not get to see as often and love to see the families grow and change over the years. The children grow up so fast! Getting something in the mail besides bills and slicitation can really make someone’s day. Email letters just are not the same, almost says I was thinking of you but really do not have time. Which very well maybe true as we are all so busy. Take a few minutes to write that note, it will be much appreaciated!

Remember the ice cream man? Did you have a regular ice cream man in your neighborhood? Loved the music. I can still here it! We recently had an ice cream truck come through our neighborhood. It was an actual ice cream shop and it was their catering truck. Hand scooped ice cream. It was awesome! On vacation, we could hear the ice cream man music on the street below. But we could not see an actual truck. We were on the 20th floor. We finally spotted him. It was not an ice cream truck at all. It was a bicycle that had an ice cream freezer on wheels. An ice cream cart. Was very cool!

Remember the drive in theatre? How fun was that! A huge family event. I remember packing the car with pillows and blankets. Several families would all go together and hang out at the drive in. Sometimes you were charged by the car load vs per person. So if you loved the drive in, there ids a chance their might be one near you. Many are longing for the good ole days. There are a few drive in theatres here that are only a short drive away. Try searching on the internet for drive in theatres near you. You might be surprised. Plan a trip to the drive in soon!

Remember when phones had cords? And took forever to dial? Remember when you use to get phone calls from family and friends and not the phone solicitors? Talk about the good ole days! It is still ok to make that phone call to say hello, or I have been thinking of you. Remember the typewriter? Remember typewriters before correction tape? Many great books and manuscripts were born on old typewriters. If the old typewriters could talk, the stories they could tell! Many are re purposing old typewriters, especially the ones with the wooden keys. They are cutting them wooden keys off and making vintage typewriter key jewelry. These pieces are fun, beautiful and very unique!

Remember the clothes line? Why of course you do, as every one had one! Some still hang their wash out to dry today. It is very eco friendly. Savings can add up over the years. For many that do not have all day to hang out the clothes, this does not work well. I remember our clothes line from our childhood. I also remember going out with Grandma to hang out the clothes. Bless her, she hung out clothes with such care. Her sheets were always crisp and fresh from the warm summer day. I can still see her clothes pin bag in my mind, as she pushed it along the line. My other Grandmother also hung out clothes, mostly towels, even as we were older. She would clean off the clothes line with a damp cloth first before hanging the towels. My grandfather would also hang out towels. He meticulously pinned them and slightly overlapped each towel, so that he could use the same clothespin to hold then end of 2 towels. He did not use a clothes pin bag. But kept the clothes pins on the line, as he slightly opened the pin just to release the towel and then left it there for next time. I actually would not be good at hanging out the clothes as I have a hard time finding the time to actually get the clothes in the wash and in the dryer. Times have changed so much, some for the good some for not so good. We can take advantage of some of the great changes modern day has brought us. But still hold onto the “old school” way of doing things. Change can be very good as long as we do not let that “change” who we are. We can still be thoughtful, courteous, and environmentally friendly. Always remember the good ole days! Catherine Monceaux Shabby Lane Shops

Daily Escape What is your daily escape? We all need one. It can be a few moments of quiet time enjoying a cup of coffee or even a glass of wine at the end of the day. Taking a few minutes or longer of personal time for yourself. Reading a book during the day or at night. Your reward for making it through a hectic day. For some moms a quick nap would be heaven! Do not think of the things that still need to be done, but appreciate what you actually accomplished. There will always be something that needs to be done, it can wait. You deserve it! Schedule that daily escape, well daily!

My Dream Home Are you living in your dream home? Or are you still dreaming about it? I have seen many people show pictures of their “dream home”. And, that really got me thinking. We are always wanting more than what we have, or what we can afford. There are some that their dream home is a small cottage, with a white picket fence, that is within their financial reach, but they just have not made that move to purchase that dream home. I realized that no matter what size, condition or age of your home you ARE living in someone’s dream home. It may not be yours. There is someone that is dreaming of a home as nice as yours and comfortable, warm in the winter, warm running water. Then I realized I AM living in MY dream home, I did not always know that. We could have a nicer, larger home. But, we could have easily become homeless, lost our dream home when our financial situation changed, when we had children. Instead, this home allows me to live my dream. Staying home with my children, working from home. This home allows me to be able to be with my children. So yes I am living in my dream home! So if you just realized, like me you are living in your dream home, or someone else’s . Look at your house and remember what made you fall in love with it the first time. The space? The location? Try to appreciate your home again. You can do affordable things to your home, to fix it up. You can do small things to help you appreciate your home again. Paint is very affordable, adding new color, can totally change the look of a home. New drapes or window treatments can add a special touch. Perfect time to start that dream garden! If you are still dreaming of that dream home, that is ok. It is great to have dreams. It is also ok to act on those dreams. The housing market has really picked up and a great time to sell your home and buy that dream home. I have also found that one person’s dream home, is not the same as the next person. You get what you focus on If you’re my client, you probably hear me say this a lot. You get what you focus on, so stop focusing on “I’m fat and miserable” and start focusing on “I want to be healthier and I want to be the best version of myself ”. If you currently don’t feel comfortable in your body - just pay attention how many times have you called yourself fat, made a face, even cried about the way you look/feel? And how much time do you spend feeling bad about yourself? Then probably eating something to feel better? I know, because I’ve been there. Then ask yourself how many times have you said something positive or felt good about yourself? Each day, every day, how do you feel? Now, imagine yourself years from now, maybe 80 years old, looking back and realizing you spent your WHOLE life feeling bad about you - the one and only you that you have! How does this sound to you? Is this something you want to experience?? If you’re not feeling good about yourself each day or for the most part - there is a very real possibility that you will only realize that you spent your ENTIRE life this way!!! NOOOOOOOO!!! You CAN change starting NOW! Literally this moment! This is up to YOU. You are in charge of your body and of the way you feel about your body. This change will not happen today, or tomorrow or even this week, but you CAN start feeling better and making progress toward better tomorrow! Remember, you get what you focus on. What are you focusing on? Health? Fat? Love handles? That dress you can’t fit into? Or are you focusing on a better tomorrow? Time is NOW. I promise you, I know what it feels like. I’ve been down that road, and haven’t had any support system. It took me years to figure myself out. It took me a lot of self-analyzing moments and self-talks to get where I am today, but I can proudly say that I have NEVER felt better in my life, I have NEVER been in a better shape, I have NEVER EVER, EVER been happier in my life! And it all started with a decision - decision to be better, to feel better, to strive to be better, but better ME. Don’t look at others and wish you were like them. Use people that inspire you as just that - your inspiration, drive and motivation, but your goals are yours.

You are made perfect for YOU. Don’t compare to others. Compare to yourself yesterday. Strive to be better. Just a tiny little bit. Shift your focus. Start now, right this moment. Whisper. Tell yourself that you CAN and that you WILL and that you DESERVE IT! Then decide on your goal. Small goal. Tiny small goal. Next step may be hardest but is very, very important: determine which ones are toxic people in your life and slowly start distancing yourself from those. You’ll be surprised to see positive people just walking into your life when you focus on the positive. out of your life. Know that this takes time. Keep track of progress. And if this is all too much, know that I am here. I am here to help. I can be your coach, trainer and a friend. I can listen and advise. I can help you get back on track. But it all starts with you.

The Love of Aut umn

Decorate with the Seasons I personally love to decorate for fall. Porches are a great way to show off your fall decor. You can find bales of hay, cornstalks and of course pumpkins, at many local stores or even better a pumpkin patch! Porch decorating tips: When using fresh pumpkins to decorate your porch, make sure the pumpkins are not actually touching the concrete. Place the pumpkins on a piece of cardboard. If they touch the concrete, they will get a bit mushy on the bottom. (tip i picked up form a pumpkin farmer) Want to have one of the best looking front doors on the street? Make your own wreath if you are the creative type. Even if you are not real crafty, you can make a beautiful wreath! Take a trip to your local craft store and check out all the great fall decor supplies. Or better yet, support an artist and purchase a wreath at a craft show or a crafty shop. Mums are my absolute favorite to decorate with. If you have ever been to my house, you will know that. I have mums planted all over. That is what is so great about potted mums! Plant them in your gardens after your fall decorating season is over, for years of beauty! As a mom of young children our porch decor has also taken a bit of a Halloween theme. Jack O’ Lanterns & fun spiders and even spider webs have taken over the porch. Each year we add something new. The scarecrows are always fun. I think we now have 6 scarecrows in our collection. A single pumpkin and potted mum is fine for those just starting our or like a more simple theme. White pumpkins are beautiful and unique added in with the fall colors, or even alone with white mums. Decorate with your preference and enjoy decorating with the seasons! Catherine Monceaux Shabby Lane Shops

Fall to do List: Visit a Pumpkin Patch This is such a fun fall must do! This is not just for children but for adults also! Pumpkin patches are owned by small businesses, usually farmers. I love supporting small businesses! You can find the perfect pumpkin for decorating, carving or even for that special homemade pie! Did you know there is a pumpkin that is great for baking? They are the smaller pumpkins. Be sure and ask for the ones for baking. They will be happy to tell you about the pumpkins. The larger ones are great for carving and decorating. There are so many different types, colors and shapes. There is even a “Cinderella pumpkin. Once you see it, you will know why. Perfect shape for the horse drawn Cinderella coach! Many pumpkin patches have corn mazes for you to enjoy. Petting zoos, play area and games for the kids. Chances are there is a hay ride. Great photo opportunities also. Many churches even set up pumpkin patches, and are fund raisers. if you cannot find a local farm.

Fall Means Everything Pumpkin! If you are not a fan of pumpkin flavored everything, you may be in the minority. There are so many things that become pumpkin flavored or pumpkin added, come fall! From pumpkin coffee, tea, latte to doughnuts and muffins! We are so anxious for fall we start buying these things before the weather even starts cooling off, as if it will help fall weather arrive sooner! We of course start baking with the first breath of cool weather. I know for me, I get the urge to bake everything! As all summer, I turned on the oven as little as possible I cannot wait to make the first pot of chili and gumbo! Baking breads, like banana nut and pumpkin are on my to do list. All summer, I am storing away over ripe bananas in the freezer. So I have enough bananas on hand, to make banana nut bread for months!

Pumpkin Banana Bread 2 ripe bananas, mashed 2 eggs 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1 1/3 cups canned pumpkin puree 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup white sugar

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3/4 cup raisins (optional) 1/2 cup walnut pieces (optional)

Preheat oven to 350. Grease & flour a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan. In a large bowl, stir together the mashed banana, eggs, oil, pumpkin, honey and sugar. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, pie spice and cinnamon, stir into the banana mixture until just combined. Fold in the raisins and walnuts. Pour batter into the greased pan. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Cool loaf in the pan for 10 minutes then move to a wire rack to cool completely.

Fall to do list: Visit an Apple Orchard Late summer early fall is a great time to visit an apple orchard. There very well maybe one near you! If there is one nearby it will be worth the trip for young and old! Apple picking tips: Ask the farmer! He knows all the tips! He will know which are ripe. He times them from the moment they flower. I have heard the apples on the outside of the tree ripen first. For an apple to be ripe, it is not like most fruit, ripe apples are firm not soft. They also stop ripening once pulled from the tree. If an apple falls as you pick it, it is fine if it hits the ground. Watch for bruises on the apples. When picking do not toss in the basket, but place gently. So pick enough to eat, bake with and even freeze! Thought of planting your own apple tree? Do it! Apple trees grow quickly and start producing fruit quickly. Check with your local nursery to see if you live in the right climate for apple growing and special care needed during winter months. So you have all those great apples, now what to do? Eat them of course! Perfect timing for fall caramel apples! Or even a great game of bobbin for apples! Yes I did play that at a fall festival as a child and of course still remember!

Delicious Fall Caramel Apples 6 apples - clean & dry 1 package individually wrapped caramels, (unwrapped) 2 TBS milk Remove the stem from each apple Press a craft stick into the top. Grease a baking sheet. Place caramels and milk in a microwave safe bowl, and microwave 2 minutes, stirring once. Allow to cool slightly Roll each apple quickly in caramel sauce until well coated. Place on prepared sheet to set. ENJOY!

From Orchard to Oven Even if you did not get a chance to visit the apple orchard, you can still make this homemade delicious apple pie. 1 - 9 inch double crust 1/2 cup unsalted butter 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/4 cup water 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 8 apples peeled & sliced Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to make a paste. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer. Place the bottom crust in your pie pan. Place apples on the bottom, mounded slightly. Pour 1/2 the mixture over apples. Then cover with a lattice work crust. Gently pour the remaining sugar and butter mixture over the crust. Careful not to spill mixture. Place pie on cookie sheet. Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees. Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.

Shop and Support Small Business Did you know that when you shop a small business, you are helping someone live their dream? So many small businesses are mothers trying to work from home, or someone trying to make additional income. It could be a parent trying to make ends meet in today’s economy. Whether you are shopping our online clients on Shabby Lane Shops, our advertisers in our magazine, or you are shopping a local small business, you are doing a great thing! (Not to mention when you purchase this magazine) I am a very small business. Many think we are a large corporation. I am a work from home mom. Shabby Lane in

Nolensville

We love our new shop! We opened our doors with great enthusiasm May 2014 and have not looked back! It has been an incredible year! We carried our online shopping mall a bit further and created our own shop, selling our clients products. We have over 40 artist and merchants that have come together to create this amazing shop! We support small business! This has allowed us to support small businesses even more. Alone we could not have done this. It has taken everyone of our clients to make this possible. Location, location, location! Yes we have the perfect location, but it was not easy. We knew the town we wanted to be in, small, quaint, but beautiful! We hit several dead ends, each time knowing things absolutely happen for a reason. When a door shuts, there is a reason, and I always accept that. Fighting that door, can lead to problems. And as the saying goes, another one opens. And our door opened wide! Now our doors are open 7 days a week! We have 1700 square feet in the Historic District of Nolensville, TN. We are located next door to the Feed Mill, also referred to as the Amish Country Market. They have wonderful food, incredible deli sandwiches, local grown produce. A famous breakfast buffet on Saturdays.

We have many great neighbors in the historic district. We feel so blessed to be a part of this great community! When you stop in, be sure and visit all the great shops and our friends, Village Antiques and Gifts, Roses and Rustics, the Tanner House, Three French Hens, Peacock Lane, Nolensville The Barn, Nolensville Toy Shop & more! Great food at the Feed Mill/Amish Market place and Nana’s Diner. Make a day of it! It will be a great day for sure! Here is a peek into our shop. We hope you enjoy the tour!
