t is refreshing to see a magazine of such professional standard coming out from an expat keralite community, while most of such expat publications are either a pulp of petty gossips or a catalog of 'Malayali Assosiation of ABC street' secretaries and treasurers.

The february issue of Metro Malayalam is rich in content with the cover story on AAP- composed of balanced views, and the feature on Aussie - keralites involved in backyard farming. In the English section, it was curious to read a column - Spiritual Tree by Jasbeer Musthafa on Hindu spirituality, as well as K Raman's article on the infamous kings of India. Unlike most others, instead of praising monarchy, Raman gives a realistic perspective on Preindependance India. Though there might be space limitations, but it would be better if the magazine could include more news on upcoming events - both community specific and others. Rather than occupying a niche readership of Malayalam speaking, homesick community, Metro Malayalam can and should try to work as a bridge between the Keralites and Aussie cultural, social life. BMW X5
Ultimate Driving Machine It was in 1999 that the car maker from Bavaria entered the off-roader segment with the four wheel driven BMW X5. This car which claimed the title ‘SPORTS ACTIVITY VEHICLE’ rewrote the books on how the off-roaders should drive. This new breed got its off roader gene from Land Rover(which was owned by BMW in 90's), which was seamlessly mated to BMW's expertise in making driverfocused performance cars. The outcome was a great all rounder that created a storm in the segment.

After the success of two generations of BMW X5 over the past 14 years, the company has come out with their third generation BMW X 5 in 2013. The exterior appearance of the new X5 is not a revolution but just an evolution from the previous models. In the front, the twin circular headlight cluster with LED corona rings merges into the iconic "kidney grills" which are wider and more prominent than the previous models . Bi-xenons are now standard, with adaptive LED headlamps available as an option. The side profile carries over the well established X5 look and the rear end gets wider tail lights with horizontal LED light rods which gives a fresh appearance. The aerodynamics has been improved with the sporty side vents and the aeroblades at the rear. The large size electrically operated tail gate is split open, which makes it very practical while loading and unloading stuff especially in tight spaces. The interiors of the new X5 are quite roomy and refreshing with top notch fit and finish. The leather wrapped dashboard has tablet like 10.2 inch high resolution screen integrated to the centre console. The surround view cameras provides a birds eye view image on this screen which comes more than handy while parking this vehicle. The large touch pad on the iDrive that recognizes the letters or numbers written

on it is a new feature. You can now dial a number by writing it on the touch pad with your finger. The same can be done to enter a new destination on the builtin sat-nav. The head-up display ,which is a highlight in recent BMW models projects relevant driving information straight into the driver’s field of vision, thereby allowing the driver to focus on the road ahead. Another clever option that BMW offers is the "traffic jam assist" that takes the control of the car when you are stuck in a traffic jam and moves the car forward automatically, maintaining a safe distance to the car in the front. The ambient lighting that can be set to 9 different colours provides exclusivity to the interiors .The panoramic sunroof opens so wide that it almost gives the feel of a convertible. The Harman Kardon surround system gives outstanding sound quality. Those of you audiophiles out there can go for the Bang & Olufsen high end surround sound system with 16 speakers, which is available as an option. The high quality heated leather seats are extremely comfortable with active headrests, backrest and thigh support, that can be individually adjusted and saved to memory .The car comes in 5 and 7 seater options .The four zone climate control with a/c vents in the side pillars allows the passengers in the rear seat also to set their temperature individually. BMW has been quite thoughtful in providing lots of storage spaces , cubby holes and cup holders which are very functional for family transport. The spacious boot has a capacity of 650 litres with the seats up(5 seater) and an enormous 1870 with the rear seats folded forwards. BMW is bringing an entry rear wheel drive model in the new generation X5 - named as sDrive 2.5 which is powered by 2litre turbo charged engine. The mid spec model xDrive 30d is powered by a 3.0 litre APRIL 2014
METRO MOTORING turbocharged six cylinder diesel engine which delivers 190kW of power and an enormous 560Nm of torque. It takes only 6.9 seconds to sprint from 0- 100kms/ hr and gives an average fuel efficiency of 6.2 liters per 100 km. The other diesel options are xDrive 40d and the triple turbo X5 M50d. The xDrive35i has a six cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. The real beast - the xDrive50i with 8 cylinders silky smooth petrol engine that takes the car from 0-100 km/hr in 5 seconds, with its top speed is electronically limited at 250 km/hr. Lighter construction with use of aluminium in combination with technical advancements like 8 speed gear box and the start stop technology has improved the fuel efficiency of the new X5. A plug in hybrid model named X5 eDrive is also being developed by BMW which is expected to go on sale in 2015.
In short, the new BMW X5 has a clever solution to whatever challenge comes its way. The modest updates and precise tweaks make the latest X5 a serious threat to other cars in this segment like the Mercedes Benz M class and the Audi Q7. The on road price of the new generation X5 ranges from 95,000 AUD to 150,000 AUD, depending on the size of the engine and the options you chose to customise your car. No matter which model you choose , the all new X5 retains a high level of luxury appeal and driving pleasure ..and at the same time it provides a good amount of practicality and versatility, which makes it the master of multi-tasking !! Highlight : the new BMW X5 has a clever solution to whatever challenge comes its way.

The X5 pleases the person behind the wheel with different driving modes like Eco-pro, comfort and the sports. Well calibrated features like traction control ,stability control and adaptive suspension make the car very predictable on any terrain. Despite the big dimensions of the car, the new X5 is surprisingly agile and also an effortless cruiser on the highways. BMW has retained its signature in the sharp and accurate handling. The off road capability is taken care by
the features like hill decent control and torque vectoring which offers optimum traction by adjusting the power split between the wheels. The list of safety features is also very comprehensive.

What Is Greater Than Prayer?

aulana Jalaluddin Rumi was one of the greatest mystics of the East. He has also been admired by Western Philosophical world as the greatest mystical poet of all time. It is also worth noting that this unrestrained acceptance of Rumi and his teachings lead to misrepresenting his scholarly persona and misconstruing his messages according to the readers’ vested-interests. Rumi was born in a Persian family speaking parents in the village of Wakhsh in Persia. Wakhsh belonged to the larger province of Balkh (parts of now modern Afghanistan and Tajikistan). Greater Balkh was at that time a major center of Persian culture and Sufism. Rumi’s father, Bahauddin Walad, was a theologian, jurist and a mystic from Wakhsh, who was very famous at that time. Rumi began his schooling under his father and memorized the Holy Qur’an when he was very young. Rumi’s first Sufi master was Sayyid Burhanuddin Termizi (he was a student of Rumi’s father), under whom Rumi studied for ten years. It was at the age of 37, Rumi met his second Sufi master, Shamsuddeen Muhammad al-Tabrizi (from Iran), who was 60 years old then. This rendezvous of Sheikh and Mureed, Guru and Shishya, Master and Disciple, changed the life of Rumi lock, stock and barrel. From a proficient teacher and jurist, Rumi was transformed into an ascetic. Shams Al Tabrizi had traveled throughout the Middle East searching and praying for someone who could endure his company.

Shams taught Rumi not only to be a profound mystic, but very knowledgeable about traditional and mystical interpretations of verses from the Qur’an and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. Maulana Jalaluddhin Muhammad Al Rumi died in 1273 and was buried next to his father’s tomb in Konya, Turkey. Rumi believed that the spirit after transference from the Supreme Ego undergoes a process by which it comes nearer and nearer to the same Supreme Ego. According to Rumi all matter in the universe obeys this Divine Law. Rumi believed that there is a specific goal to the process: the attainment of
reason, or it can be postponed, but it is impossible to withdraw or put off faith whatsoever the situation may be. Prayer attains nothing without faith, just like the prayer of hypocrites, but faith even without prayer is valuable. When the prayer varies from religion to religion, faith does not change from religion to religion. The unearthing of the advantages of faith depends upon the innermost awareness of the seeker. Each seeker is like the flour in the hands of a doughmaker. Utterances or teachings are like water sprinkled on the flour according to the moisture needed. But unless the water soaks in, it cannot make dough.
Wise men by understanding the nature enters into the unity through its diversity, and realizes the personality of God and sacrifices his own individuality. “He who knows himself knows God” (Prophet Mohammed), “The Kingdom of God is within you” (Bible) and “Self-knowledge is the real wisdom” (Vedanta) are signifying the requirement of self- realization. God. For Rumi, God is the ground Rumi continues the discourse by as well as the goal of all existence. exemplifying the topic by taking another story. Here is an anecdote from the life of Rumi, in which he elucidates the There was once an emaciated person, as weak as a sparrow, and significance of prayer and faith. extremely ugly. He was very ugly A person came to Rumi and asked: to the extent that even other ugly “What is greater than prayer?” people looked on him and thanked Rumi answered: There are two sides God. They used to stop complainto the answer for this question. One ing about their repulsiveness by is that the soul of prayer is greater seeing him. Yet, for all that, he was than prayer. Second is faith is great- very rude and arrogant in his attier than prayer. tude. Likewise, the disciple has a pure and true spirit. But those who are nourished by the hands of an imposter and a deceiver, learning the art from them, become just like their master, disreputable and delicate. Our distance from God stems from our own self-existence and our mistaken impression that we are somehow independent of our Supreme Source. The ego veils us from perceiving the spirit and what lies beyond; like Iblis (devil), we see only the outward side of things. Rumi warned: “The ritual prayers are as the eggs, which hatch the chicks; so do not peck like a bird without reverence or felicity.” Rumi continues: “The Prophet has said that each prostration of prayer is a knock on heaven’s door. When anyone continues to knock, felicity shows its smiling face.” We often get prompted with a legendary question, which is nothing
The reflection of our sincere prayers with strong faith in God results in complete dependence on God. Hence it becomes inappropriate to a devotee to look towards anyone else except God. The seeker now learns to be thankful to the Almighty and he learns to live according to the desire of the Almighty. Both the sorrows and happiness are considered to
be His blessings. The reactions become dull and one starts accepting things as they are. Jalaluddhin Rumi says: “no recipes of the most delicious dishes satisfy our hunger. Nor can the theory of God give complete joy and peace; we must actually realize God or attain that state of realization which gives eternal happiness through the admiration and worship of nature’s beauty and its source. The Beloved is all in all, the lover only veils him; the Beloved is all that lives, the lover a dead thing.” From age to age, various methods called religions and theologies have been adopted by different regions and civilizations. Though the form and message of these several religions appear so contrasting, their
source is one and the same. Unfortunately, from the very beginning the differences have created prejudice, envy, and rivalry between people. Wise men by understanding the nature enters into the unity through its diversity, and realizes the personality of God and sacrifices his own individuality. “He who knows himself knows God” (Prophet Mohammed), “The Kingdom of God is within you” (Bible) and “Self-knowledge is the real wisdom” (Vedanta) are signifying the requirement of that realization. Rumi says: “The prayer that keeps us away from evil acts is done five times a day. Whereas the lovers of God always remain in prayer for the love in their soul and the Divine fondness that kindles their heart does not calm down with praying five-times a day.” Rumi explains: “The prayer of a devoted servant of God is like a fish in water. As a fish cannot live without water, the soul of a lover of God cannot find serenity without continuous remembrance.” When one realizes these and loves God, that person loves all beings as manifestations of God and serves them. Devotional practice, spiritual striving and ascetic discipline are all for the sake of purifying oneself, not because God needs them. Hence, service to others means service to God. A real devotee of God strives to make the hearts of others joyful so that God will be pleased. In effect, this means serving God. Hence, the kernel is, if you wish to serve God, the Beloved, you must serve others. Maulana Rumi says: “What people call “Paradise! Paradise!” Is a few houses and hoories. Give them to whomever wants them But I long for YOU.”

The ugly man responded: “O, People of the court, and nobles of the state! What he says is absolutely true. I was nourished by his wealth and charity until I grew up, disgraceful and rough as you see me now. If I had been nurtured by someone else, surely my appearance, my manners and my worth would have been better than this. He is right that he picked me out of the gutter; but all I would say is; O! I wish that I were there and someone else had picked me, I would not have been such a laughing stock!”
but: Why we should worship God? Isn’t the theoretical knowledge of His Supremacy sufficient for the highest realization (awakening)? The answer is: no, theoretical knowledge of a subject can never bring the perfection. Just like, a written music cannot entertain us, unless it is played.

Then one day the minister lost his temper. He shouted and said: “O, People of the court, I picked this creature out of the gutter and nurtured him. By eating my bread and sitting at my table, by enjoying my wealth, and that of my predecessors, he became distinguished. Now he has reached this point, where he even forgets to respect my reputation and status!”

The Maharaja of Scindia of Gwalior touched the climax of eccentricity when he installed the train service of food delivery to his large group of invitees inside the massive Jai Vilas Palace banquet
hall at Gwalior. With untold wealth of the state of Gwalior at his disposal in 1940, King Madhao Rao ventured into costly hobbies that even crossed the limit of eccentricities. He loved electric trains of all sorts, who are not? We love toy trains and would have played with them as young kids. His Highness commissioned a massive sized iron dining table that could accommodate hundreds of guests in his banquet hall of massive proportions. He laid over 75 meters of solid silver specially crafted rails atop the table leading from the Royal Kitchen circling the periphery of the banquet table.Connecting the Kitchen to the banquet hall through arched tunnels that required to cut walls in many places, and this had to be done in an aesthetic way too. The solid silver train was custom made in England, true working model in all aspects, tooting, steam and smoke emanating out of the chimney; in other words it was an under sized true replica of a normal train. The vision of the king was that the train carrying food in open compartments, stopped, started and travelled around the table while the guests could take the necessary food items as the train stopped in front of them. The train retuned to the kitchenafter each circular trip through tunnels to reload with food and the circling started again. The signals, controlled the start stop of the train, followed by intermittent tooting. Everybody was amused of this train food service system. As the train began the journey the sycophantic worshippers of the king clapped in unison to the pleasure of the king. The important feature of it was that the whole process was managed and orchestrated by the king using his control console. The visitors were ushered in and were seated around the table. The king sat at the head of the table, no need to say in a throne, larger than normal chairs on a high perch. He presided over a control panel with various levers, switches, alarm signals, accelerators and what not. The king had a good knowledge of operating the panel effectively. The king fiddled with the control panel and could deliver cooked vegetables, Chicken dishes, potato specialities, Rice Pulao, and an assortment of delicacies to the invited dignitaries who were keen to part-take them. The King could order extra dishes and

Eccentric Maharajas obtain second and third helpings as desired. The king with a wicked sense of humour could create some amusement by depriving a chosen guest of the delicacy dish by the flick of a button, sending the train speeding past him. It was however all not hunky dory to the king, there must be a minor glitch inevitably in any presentation. One day during an important well attended banquet to the Viceroy of India, his control panel got hay wire; the train went amuck from end to end spilling curries and roast chicken with the guests shielding their faces to protect from the spillage and even began running away from the table to a safer place. The Indian Railways never experienced such an embarrassment and uncontrollable spillage, in its long chequered life. The enraged king akin to a fire breathing dragon acted like the legendary saint ‘Durvasas’ while, the
servants quivered in their boots, all due to the misbehaviour of the Raja’s pet train. The Maharaja soon did order a high level inquiry to go into the bottom of the mishap. Unfortunately there is no recording in history of the quantum of punishment metedout to the waiters (they were not controlling the train, it was the king) who were innocent victims. Hope they were not punished for any wrong doings. (I want to explain what the word Maharaja of India stands for- the ruling prince (believed to be an incarnation of God) of Indian kingdoms of pre independent era. Somehow the word Maharaja conjures up as an imposing turbanedman, with a mighty MO, bedecked with exotic priceless jewellery wielding enormous power and status. They were wealthy beyond imagination. Though not a special ‘Avathara’ created by God, but in
fact they were a world apart from us mortals. There was nothing unreachable for them. Fast moving and top of the range luxury items attracted them, with money being no object of worry to procure them. From the moment they were born, they were on the lap of luxury and opulence, adorned with ornaments of gold sprinkled with one of its kind precious stones. An English nanny was a more prized possession of the Royal household than a custom build Rolls Royce. The Indian prince learned to live the British way and got enrolled in Eaton, Cambridge and Oxford, learned Polo and mingled with British Aristocracy and Royalty. While this was on, their women folk were guarded like treasured caged animals’ byEunuchs and kept away from men’s gaze. In short a Maharaja was born into Royalty, they are above all laws. Sorry to say most of them never lived up to the Royal nobility),

t was at the tender age of 7 that Sudarshan, the Singapore-born kid was brought to Uma Ayyar, a pioneer member of Sydney Music Circle (SMC). His parents were unsure of where he stood in terms of musical knowledge and rendition. As a teacher, Uma could spot the unmistakable talent in the boy. After just a couple of years of training, he won first prize in the prestigious Sydney Music Festival and making out his excellence, Malladi brothers (the famous Classical vocalist duo in India) agreed to train him through Skype. This incident tells us about what Sydney Music Circle provides the Indians in Sydneya platform for all Carnatic musicians and conscientious listeners to get together and live the essence of the traditional music of India.
of free music concert on the last Saturday of every month. Two elaborate events - Thyagaraja Aradhna and Swathi Thirunal Music Festival are conducted every year without fail that not only propagates the Carnatic music, but also passes on glimpses of culture to the younger generation. For those who want to learn music and about its nuances, SMC exposes you to a wide world. For those
As Dr. Ramanathan, a medical practitioner, founded SMC in 1983, his idea was to offer an incentive of appreciation for the artists to learn and practise more of Carnatic Music. But he agrees that it did much better than he ever expected! Ever since its inception, they could maintain an uninterrupted tradition

who want to enjoy music, it organises several events throughout the year which features a wealth of excelling musicians and riveting performances. For those who want to be part of the events in physique and soul, it offers opportunities to volunteer- you can do everything, right from being part of the organising of the event, cooking food for the 500 plus attendees of the events like Swathi Thirunal Music Festival, collecting donations to cleaning up. And as Ramu Ayyar, one of the first few members of Sydney Music Circle puts it “this organisation stood in unison for over 31 years, solely depending on the volunteers who are willing to offer their valuable time, energy and money for music.”
But, Sydney Music Circle is not just about events. It is more of a lifestyle to some, like Mohana Iyer who grew up along with SMC. Performing since 1989, he feels that the organisation instils a ‘community like’ feeling amongst its members. For someone who was born and brought up in Sydney, SMC has provided the motivation to learn music and perform and now he is passing on the boon of its presence to his students who he trains; making sure they get the same opportunity as he did. And that’s when Dr. Ramanathan’s vision on SMC gets fulfilled- to pass on the invaluable heritage of Classical Carnatic Music!

Absolutely, the one thing that strings them all together is the magic of music. And that is best illustrated on the day of Thyagaraja Aradhna, conducted (on 22nd and 23rd February this year) to pay homage to the musician-saint Thyagaraja. During the occasion, there is a point where all the musicians of SMC including the senior and junior artists recite a
composition together. Quite a sight to behold, it is truly a celestial experience! The auditorium is filled with the unrestrained voices of more than 100 musicians, disciplined within the established parameters of raaga (the mode) yet freely flowing in terms of the magic created by a beautiful blend of Sruthi (the relative musical pitch), Swara (the musical sound of a single note, Raaga and Taala (the rhythmic cycles).
