What does being Married mean? B
Editorial Director Lakeisha Griffin
Executive Editor
eing married means more than just wearing a diamond ring and having a beautiful wedding. Remember there is life after the wedding! Before you say “YES” you need to make sure this is the person YOU want to spend the rest of your life with. Now I am very aware of the tribulations that can occur that can shake up a marriage down the road. Sometimes situations can cause people to change then you must do what’s best for you. But I’m not talking about those situations, take Kim Kardashian for instance. She had doubts before she walked down the aisle but she went ahead with it because “She didn’t want to disappoint anyone”. What about because I can’t party like I used to or s/he has gained weight. Now I’m not trying to steer anyone from getting married. I love weddings and everything they represent. Just be certain that you marry for LOVE and not for fashion. Everyday won’t be fun but with love you can weather the storm together. In the vows it says“To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health” to me this is the most important part. So when he gets on one knee and asks you to marry him and you say yes, your journey begins. It’s a beautiful thing to find Love but once you find it hold on to it. While you’re dancing the night away at your reception with all your family and friends, glance across the room and find your husband/wife and whisper, “I will love you from this day forward!”
Congratulations on your Big Day!

The Art of Online Shopping By: Verinia Galloway
Online shopping is becoming more popular than ever. More and more people are taking advantage of being able to shop in the convenience of their own home. Online shopping offers many things that shopping at a brick and mortar store cannot. The biggest of these is a wider selection not just from stores you may already shop, but it gives you the opportunity to shop at businesses across the world. As with every great thing, there have been some challenges with shopping online. In response to these challenges online businesses have been looking at ways to keep and increase their visibility. Facebook and Twitter have become invaluable to the business world and this trend is not likely to disappear anytime soon. Customers can go one a business page and by just clicking “like they can receive updates on deals and keep up with trends and new merchandise available from their favorite store. People are looking for businesses on Facebook and Twitter more and more. Thirty one percent report going to Facebook fan pages or Twitter feeds, almost twice as many people as in 2009 according to a study done by Compete, a quarterly Online Shopper Intelligence Study. This figure has no doubt increased substantially over the past 3 years. A major way, if not the most important way, to create and keep an online business visible is to address customer problems and concerns immediately. These include dealing with the reason they might not want to shop on your site. The top 3 concerns and reasons consumers
10
Shadesmag.net - Spring 2012
are reluctant to shop online are shipping charges, return fees, and the time it takes for them to receive their merchandise. By examining ways to tackle these issues will result in larger growth for the online business overall. The sites that offer free shipping and returns will undoubtedly have more customer satisfaction and in turn a larger profit than those that do not offer this feature. There are other things that are causing the online business to boom as much as it is. Consumers are becoming more disenchanted with shopping in stores because of lack of customer service and merchandise selection and quality. A survey conducted by Deloitte LLP in 2010 found that 45% of consumers were satisfied with the merchandise they were being offered by brick and mortars. This number has dropped to only 27% as of early March 2011. Out of the 1,050 consumers surveyed 54% complained of poor customer service. If online businesses want to capitalize on the shortcoming of the current state of brick and mortars then customer satisfaction is key! So in short we are seeing a major influx of online boutiques and stores and this number is sure to increase. We are also seeing the creations of online shopping clubs such as Shoe Dazzle and Jewel Mint. These sites offer their customer the feel of exclusivity and a bargain monthly price. With the increase in social networking and the introduction of newer and newer technology, online shopping is guaranteed to become the norm in every household around the world.

Eyelash Extensions By: Kobe Ellis
There is no doubt about it; the Eyelash Extensions craze has gone viral! Women all over the world are choosing to extend and/ or enhance their lashes. As a professional Lash Stylist with over 12years expertise in the field, the first bit of advice I would offer to anyone considering lash extensions is that Eyelash Extensions services are never to be taken lightly. There are many different application techniques available for your consideration. The most popular are Eyelash Strips, Individual Lashes, Single Lashes and Semi Permanent Eyelashes. The first thing a woman needs to decide is which technique will best suit her needs. How long do you want your lashes to last and what look you would like to achieve are the two most important decisions you must make. An experienced Lash Stylist can help you with this process.
14
Shadesmag.net - Spring 2012
It is a great idea to begin researching reviews on the Lash Stylists in your area. Don’t be afraid to ask women about their lashes. Many are willing to offer you the information you seek. Be bold enough to ask the women who are wearing lash looks that you are not particularly interested in as well because this may give you a great idea as to where not to go for your services. Not necessarily because the Lash Stylist does bad work but perhaps because her “Styling Signature” may not suite the look you wish to achieve. Be sure to take notes and make mental and visual comparisons. It is advisable to schedule consultations with a few different Lash Stylists before making you final decision. During your consultation be sure to retrieve the following information from the stylist: Is the Stylist a licensed Aesthetician or Cosmetologist? Has she or he been formerly
trained in lash extensions as this skill is not thoroughly covered in beauty school. How long has he or she been practicing the fine art of lash extensions? Your wedding is a very special day and you really need your lash stylist to have experience with flawlessly achieving the perfect look for your special day. The next thing you need to know is which adhesives the stylist is using for the technique you have chosen. Lastly, but by no means least, I highly recommend every bride to begin trying different lash looks for your big day. Start about 4 months before your wedding and with each design you try, be sure to apply several different looks in makeup so that you can see the marriage of the two.

Bouquets and Boutoneers Whether you’re a traditional or modern bride, there are many ways to make your wedding flowers unique. Choose specific flowers that are significant in your life, include an heirloom brooch, or tie the stems with a piece of fabric to remember a loved one are just a few of the ways you can personalize. Whatever design you choose, don’t forget to coordinate your groom’s boutonniere with the bridal bouquet for a cohesive look. How will you personalize your wedding flowers? Grooms Cake
4 Inspiring cakes you can dedicate to your groom
By: Shankie Williams
The groom’s cake is a chance for the groom to express himself at his wedding. Generally the groom allows the bride to chose everything from colors to location and even the clothes he will wear. Allowing him this small input will showcase the groom and make him more of a part of the wedding. Originally intended to be a gift from the bride, the Groom’s cake is usually darker or rum soaked. It is typically smaller than the wedding cake and is decorated and/or shaped to reflect a particular hobby or interest of the groom. Traditionally it is given to the guests as favors. Although it is an old southern tradition it is making a comeback to cities all over the US.

Of “Twinkle
SWM: What inspired you to create ‘Twinkle Twinkle’? AB: My father was a couture jewelry designer many years ago. He would design and create the most magnificent, artistic pieces of jewelry I have ever seen. After a 20 year career in a totally different field, I decided to open my own business. The inspiration for Twinkle Twinkle was to bring glamorous, couture style jewelry, like the magnificent pieces I had seen so many years ago, which were so elegant and timeless, and offer them in a collection, including earrings, necklaces, bracelets, bangles, cuffs, brooches, and hair accessories for brides. I wanted to bring couture style bridal jewelry and accessories to brides at affordable prices and offer them the attention and customer service that accompanies the search for the ideal details to complete their bridal ensemble. SWM: Can your clients get customized items? AB: Clients can get a variety of customized items, such as Swarovski crystallized cake toppers custom designed to match their invitation monograms or any theme they choose. We also crystallize wedding shoes and create custom shoe monograms on the shoe bottoms. We also carry personalized items such as toasting flutes, cake knife sets, personalized unity candles, sand ceremony sets, and many other ceremony and reception accessories. Our newest designs include custom embellished garters and beautifully embellished ring bearer boxes instead of traditional ring pillows. SWM: What’s the turnaround time? AB: Turnaround time depends on the design. It can range from 2 - 4 weeks, depending on the item and what our brides request. SWM: Is the Coral Gables location your only shop/ do you plan on expanding? Our Gables boutique is our first 29 Coral Shadesmag.net - Spring 2012location. Although the idea of
expanding and adding other locations is tempting, I feel that our next step will be to offer a spectacular online shopping site to reach many more brides. SWM: Your boutique is very unique. How do you select the brands and merchandise for your store? AB: Thank you! For our jewelry and accessories, we focus on the new bridal trends unveiled every season during Bridal Fashion Week and frequent shows nationally. We always stay true to traditional, elegant designs as well, as they are always so timeless. We search for new inspirations and designs to create novel twists on traditional bridal items for our ceremony and reception accessories such as our Swarovski crystallized table numbers, bejeweled money boxes, cake stands and table décor.
SWM: What is a hot bridal trend that your shop specializes in? AB: Bridal trends change every season, but one trend that has been consistent is the element of Luxe Style. Twinkle Twinkle specializes in adding a touch of glamour and luxury to every bride’s look. The perfect accessories make every woman feel special and confident, so we try to assist each bride in capturing the essence of what makes her feel beautiful and add the glimmer she wants to look magnificent on her special day. SWM: What’s next for Twinkle Twinkle? We are always expanding our collections and adding new lines such as our newest antique, vintage inspired line of jewelry and accessories. We are also adding new designs to our Swarovski Crystallized tablescape collection, ceremony, and reception accessory collections. I am always searching for unique details for our brides, so there are always new items to dazzle our clients with.

A Toast for Every Course!
By: Nicole Ronczyk
“In vino veritas” (In wine there is truth.)
As summer approaches plans for weddings, bridal showers, and luncheons are in kicked in to high gear. This celebratory time is sure to be full of love, laughter and wedding toasts. When one thinks of toasts, champagne often comes to mind. However, if bubbly drinks aren’t your cup of tea consider serving and savoring wine on your special day. While planning your menus for your various events surrounding your union it may be advantageous to consult a sommelier, or wine steward. A sommelier is one who specializes in all aspects of wine service. In conjunction with your caterer, the sommelier can pair and suggest wines that will best complement the foods on your menu. However, if your budget does not allow for additional expenditures there are great ways to insure that the marriage of food and beverage is just as harmonious as your marriage will be! Before selecting your wine consider what flavors, styles and varieties of foods that will be served at the shower or reception. Determine whether the meat or the sauce has a stronger flavor. Generally, the wine is picked based on the meat that you’re eating, however if the sauce is more pungent you will want to pick a wine that compliments the sauce. The general rule of thumb is to match sweet foods with slightly sweet wines. Likewise, pairing sour or acidic foods with sour or acidic drinks are ideal. 1. Typically when serving chicken, veal, or seafood you will want to serve a Chardonnay or a Riesling. These are also great choices to pair with Alfredo sauces. It is advisable to avoid pairing Chardonnay with very spicy meals. 2. Pair spicy or Asian cuisine with white wine such as Gewurztraminer. This is also a great wine that will complement foie gras, pork, and certain cheeses such as Swiss. 3. Another choice is Pinot Grigio, which pairs well with creamy sauces, turkey, shrimp and veal. This would not be an ideal match with spicy or tomato based foods however. 4. Cabernet Sauvignon should be paired with dishes that have full-flavored cheeses, prosciutto ham, or bruschetta. Those who prefer a softer red with more versatile food-pairing options should consider a Pinot Noir.
42
Shadesmag.net - Spring 2012
These are just a few things to keep in mind while you are planning your wedding dinner or looking for the best alternative to toast your marriage. The options are plentiful and fit a variety of budgets and palate preferences. Salud!

Gentlemen
From his Heart When a Man Changes Written by: Tony Gaskins Jr.
Many men are looking for “Mrs. Right” but are so far from being “Mr. Right.” As a relationship coach and student of life, I’ve found that if we become what we are looking for then we will find what we are looking for. We attract what we are, not what we want. So if you want to attract something different, you must become something different. My life changed for the absolute best when I surrendered myself to the will of God. I was trying to do it my way and I was failing. I was trying to lead my wife but I didn’t have anyone leading me. Then I surrendered my life to God, and I started living and loving the way He instructs me in His Word and my life took a turn for the best. A man is the head of the household but a man cannot really lead a woman unless God is leading him. I read in the Word that a man should love his wife the way Christ loves the church. So even if you’re single, you have to go into dating with that mindset. That scripture alone changed my life and my outlook on love. When I sat back and thought about the unconditional love I have received from Christ, it floored me. I thought of how Christ laid His life down for me so that I may have life eternally, and it moved me to start loving my wife in a new way.
62
Shadesmag.net - Spring 2012
That means that a man should be willing to lead by example, not with words. A man should be willing to sacrifice his own for his woman. A man should look to give to a woman instead of taking from a woman. A man must understand that it’s his duty and call as a man to live, in this way. When a man submits his life to God in the way God has instructed us to live, then a good woman will appear. We don’t see women for who they are, until we know exactly who we are. I can assure any man that if you love a woman the way Christ loves the church, that woman will have no problem at all treating you like the King of the household. This type of love changes a person. That type of love washes a person and renews them. If you are subconsciously looking to deceive women, use women, mistreat women, take their innocence and give nothing in return, then there will be no good women for you! You won’t be able to find a good woman or have a good relationship because you are not pure. The good news is when you change; the people around you will change! So my call to every man is to surrender to God and walk in His will for your life, and watch how your relationship circumstances change. I speak from experience and it’s almost hard to put into words because of the 180 that happened in my life. This is the answer to your problems; forsake your will and do His will.

As you embark upon your journey of life as one, remember that your individual credit situations are coming along for the ride. The first five to seven years are the most tumultuous years of a marriage. This time is very challenging due to the couple adjusting to their new lifestyle, and coming to terms with different family backgrounds, ideologies, beliefs, and values. When you add debt this can wreak havoc on a burgeoning life. Many times the management of finances or the lack thereof is a hot button topic for many couples. With that said, it is not surprising that financial woes are also a contributing factor in many divorces. Thus, debt needs to be addressed before getting married for the health of your credit and your relationship. The first step should be to seek credit counseling. Credit counseling, not to be confused with consolidation, entails a debt counselor assisting you in making a budget. Please note that debt consolidation is not synonymous with credit counseling. Debt consolidation programs require that you pay a bulk amount of money each month to their company. In turn they issue payments to your various debtors. Many debt consolidation companies promise lower interest rates and settlements for pennies on the dollar. Keep in mind these “settlements do not help repair your credit.

Do your research and keep the lines of communication open. Couples should share banking and credit card statements, as well as knowledge of all debt. Developing and implementing a budget is essential. Keep an accurate account of everything that is spent and where it is spent. Establish and quantify goals. Detail your financial vision by specifying how and when debts will be satisfied. Unwritten goals are no more than unfulfilled wishes. If possible, consolidate debt with a secure a low-interest loan where all debt can be combined into one monthly payment. This will reduce monthly payments and the debt will be paid off more quickly. Consider these principles to start your new life together on the right foot. Whether you tackle your debt on your own or with assistance of a professional please address it, the health of marriage may depend on it. *Personal credit reports can be ordered from one of the major credit reporting agencies: Equifax at 1-800-685-1111, TransUnion at 1-800-888-4213 Experian at 1-888-397-3742.

Happy Medium Can a long distance marriage work?
Joi: Long distance relationships can be really difficult. Regular ones are not cake walk. Now if you get through it your relationship will be stronger then ever. You learn to live your own lives while being in a relationship. Independence is super sexy! It also makes reunions much more sweet.
Janet: Been there, done that....have a tshirt. Long story short is the length of time must be defined. Why be together when you’re NEVER together?
Alecia: A woman’s intuition is in over drive when we are in love. Whether you’re in the same city or not you know if your mate is a dog. As we all know, Cleopatra already crossed that river so we don’t have to do it again for her. Ask your self if the person is trustworthy. Distance has NOTHING to do with it.
Angelo: As long as you don’t jump to conclusions on every missed call or text not answered. I find that there are very few people can turn this situation into a success. If there are trust issues you can basically call it a wrap!
Khalil: I was in a long distance relationship while in college. It actually worked for me! No money was spent for dates twice a week. I got to golf whenever I wanted. If I didn’t feel like watching a chick flick I didn’t. No family dinners. Dang, I should have married her.....
Brandy: Trust is huge!!!!!! People will be people. As long as you are both interested in being in the relationship. Distance will not make a difference. So whether you live 600 miles apart, two streets over, or share the same bed you must trust one another. It takes work to stay connected but you are going to have to if this relationship is going to work.
Happy Medium: Assuming that this is a temporary state, use this as an opportunity of personal time to pursue your interests and hobbies as well as your career objectives. Also this gives you a chance to to be more creative in your quest to carve out quality time. It will also help you to communicate better since you don’t have “face-to-face” time. You can Skype, email, text and call to keep lines of communication open and clear. When you are together, maximize the time without beating to death the temptation of interrogating. Absence can make the heart grow fonder! THIS, should help you all reach a Happy Medium. 80
