Letter from the Head of School Dear Shady Hill Alumni, Parents, Faculty, Staff, and Friends, Thank you for your commitment to Shady Hill School in 2015–2016. This Annual Report of Giving highlights Shady Hill’s 100th year and the many individuals who support this incredible school. Thanks to each of you, we continue to be a school with an innovative academic program, collaborative classrooms, and inspired learners. As part of our 2015–2016 campaign, we raised the funds needed to break ground on “The Hub,” a building that expands the learning possibilities on campus. Opening this past September, it is home to ten new math and science classrooms. It also includes integrated-learning spaces where students team up to devise novel solutions to a wide array of challenges. At the same time, they strengthen their creative problem-solving, critical-thinking, and collaboration skills. Thank you for the many ways you support Shady Hill. We could not be the kind of mission-centered, vibrant learning community we are without your participation and generosity. I appreciate your support of our Annual Fund and our campaign, To Build. MABEL LOUISE RILEY FINANCIAL AID FUND Established in 1975 by a gift from the Mabel Louise Riley Charitable Trust. This fund supports financial aid for a diverse student body. PATRICIA B. STORROW FINANCIAL AID FUND Established in 1966 by parent James J. Storrow, Jr. in memory of his wife, Patricia. This fund supports financial aid. KATHARINE TAYLOR FINANCIAL AID FUND Established in 1974 in memory of the school’s first director, Katharine Taylor (Director 1921–1948) as part of the Capital Development Program to fund Financial Aid. ALICE A. THORP FINANCIAL AID FUND Established in 1956 in honor of Alice A. Thorp in support of financial aid. THE FREDERICK A. FUNDS IN SUPPORT OF THE TEACHER TRAINING COURSE (TTC) DOUGLAS CHEEK MEMORIAL FUND Established in 1967 in memory of Douglas Cheek TTC ’67 with gifts from his friends and family. This fund supports the Teacher Training Course.
BLUEPRINTS SERVICE LEARNING ENDOWMENT Established in 2006 as part of the Blueprints for Learning Campaign in support of the service learning program.
PRESCOTT TEACHER TRAINING COURSE FUND Established in 1992 by family and friends in memory of teacher Jane Prescott. This fund supports financial aid for the Teacher Training Course.
CLASS OF 2001 FUND Established in 2001 by the families of the Class of 2001 to support the service learning program. JANE HARDY FUND Established in 2012, this endowed fund honors and celebrates Jane Hardy’s outstanding 45-year career at Shady Hill School. The Jane Hardy Fund provides funding each year to support faculty/staff coaches, physical education, movement, and athletics.
URBAN TEACHING INITIATIVE Established in 2003 in support of the TTC program’s collaboration with urban schools. This fund also supports one individual enrolled in the TTC by providing tuition and a housing stipend.
THE LEE GINSBURG HERBST MATHEMATICS FUND Established in 2006 by the Herbst family as part of the Blueprints for Learning Campaign. This fund supports the enrichment of teaching mathematics at Shady Hill. It is especially focused on students with mathematical ability and/ or interest, with the objective of engaging them more deeply in their mathematical studies and thinking.

BARBARA C. HOOD FUND Established in 1994 as a bequest of parent and grandparent Barbara C. Hood. This fund supports the School’s general operating purposes. EMILY KLINE VISITING WRITERS FUND Established in 2006 in memory of Emily Kline, mother of Justine Shapiro-Kline ’00, Ben Shapiro-Kline ’03, and Sam Shapiro-Kline ’09. This fund supports the enhancement and innovation in the teaching of writing.
