From the Head of School & Chair of the Board of Trustees

Our

Mission The cover photo of this report sparks nostalgia — not just for the togetherness of kids unmasked and in close huddles, but for the innocence we all enjoyed last fall and winter, before the pandemic. Remarkably, despite the pandemic’s devastating effect on the nation’s health and economy, our community came together like never before and set a new record for supporting the Shady Hill mission. The Shady Hill Fund, which supports the operating budget, hit an all-time high, positioning us well for the new school year, in which COVID-19 safety requires vast new expenditures on facilities and staffing. Our community’s talent for pulling together also came to the fore when we announced the Shady Hill Cares Fund last spring, a financial aid program designed to keep our community together, despite the pandemic’s economic fallout. (See page 6.)

Shady Hill School wants children to be joyful, active learners who develop the intellectual discipline necessary to become contributing, ethical citizens. To accomplish these ends, we believe in the primacy of exploration and discovery, we advance the mastery of skills, and we help students shape meaning from knowledge.

In yet another example of community strength, our loss of a beloved employee, Cassie Firenze, was the motivating factor for the establishment of a new endowed fund for financial aid, which will carry forward forever Cassie’s work and her values. More on this touching tribute can be found on page 5. This community’s cohesiveness and spirit leads us to look back on Shady Hill’s founding by Agnes and Ernest Hocking in the fall of 1915. Like the present, that was an uncertain time. World War I had begun in June 1914, hurricanes barraged the Gulf Coast states, locusts overtook the Middle East, and America contended with a surge of tuberculosis, pneumonia and diphtheria cases. The world was in chaos, yet here were two courageous educational thinkers starting “The Cooperative Open-Air School” on their back porch. We tap into the resilience and optimism of that history now, as we forge ahead in challenging times. We can imagine future Shady Hillers a hundred-plus years from now reading about the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2020 and marveling at the strength of our community and the teamwork needed to navigate all of the complexities. If those future generations wonder how it was possible, we hope they will unearth this Report on Philanthropy from the School’s archives, for it holds the answer: it was possible through your generosity, collaboration, and devotion. Thank you. Sincerely, Mark J. Stanek Head of School

Hilary Johnston Chair, Board of Trustees 1

Cover: The “joyful” and “active” components of Shady Hill’s mission are very much in evidence on the cover photo, which captures Beginners spending time on the playground with their Grade V partners. The partners program, pairing older and younger students, has been a beloved Shady Hill tradition for decades.

2019–2020 Leadership Volunteers

Shady Hill School is immensely grateful to the many generous, talented, and committed volunteers in our community. This listing by no means captures every one of the hundreds of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and friends of the school who gave their time and talents to benefit the Shady Hill community in the 2019-20 school year. Everywhere you turn, volunteers are enriching our school’s programming, student experience, fundraising efforts, and faculty & staff. Thank you for your commitment to Shady Hill School! Grade VI Building Project

The renovated Grade VI building came online in FY 2020, and was an instant hit. Gradehead Patrick Farmer observed: “Having all of us in the same building is awesome for our sense of community as a whole grade. We talk about it using the concept of ubuntu. Here’s how we described it at the building’s opening ceremony: Ubuntu is a Bantu word from South Africa which means, roughly, ’I am because we are.’ It is a philosophy or belief system that exists in many different parts of Africa, and is translated in different ways based on the country and language, but the idea is the same. It means, I am only here, where I am, who I am, because of others. I am me because of you. It is a concept of humanity. It means the individual is important, and their strengths and differences should be recognized, celebrated and cultivated, not to enrich the individual, but to enrich the life of the community. It also means that you are here, sitting where you are, as who you are, because of those who have helped you to get here. This is a way of recognizing the impact of others in your lives, both living and dead, and their contribution to your life.” Mr. Farmer went on to say, “You could apply the concept of ubuntu to the building project itself: We are in this wonderful repurposed building because of others who made it possible, others whose contributions uphold us.” Indeed, many donors came together to make this project happen on an ambitious timeline, and we thank each and every one, from the very first spring 2018 pledges through installments paid in Fiscal Years 2019 and 2020. We are because you are. Grade VI Building Donors, 2018–2020

“The best part is the windows. Not only do they let in lots of natural light, but they’re perfect for our many discussions about ’windows and mirrors’ in the curriculum, ways that the stories of others can both give us a new perspective on experiences that are different from ours and also reflect back something we recognize from our own experience.” –Patrick Farmer, Grade VI Gradehead

Cassie Firenze Financial Aid Fund for the Children of Shady Hill Employees August 2019 brought to the Shady Hill community the devastating news that our beloved longtime Director of Admission and Financial Aid, Cassie Firenze, had passed away following her two-year battle with breast cancer. By October, a tribute fund emerged from this loss, seeded with a single extraordinary gift from Mira Kautzky and Keith Flaherty, parents of two recent graduates. This strong start was then boosted further by a number of others, all motivated by love and respect for Cassie. In consultation with Cassie’s widower, Angelo, the memorial fund is structured as an endowed scholarship whose annual payout will forever flow to financial aid, earmarked for the children of Shady Hill employees. Angelo remarked, “After Cassie passed, ideas streamed in about how best to honor her memory. Once this financial aid fund was proposed, it was instantly clear that it was perfect. The Cassie Firenze Fund touches on all the things she cared most about while working at Shady Hill: composing a diverse student body, putting the School in reach for ‘ordinary’ families, and supporting her colleagues. It’s the ideal mechanism for the School to remember her. From the bottom of our hearts, Nico and I thank everyone who has made, and will make, this fund a force for good. ‘Grateful’ and ‘awestruck’ are the best words I can muster.”

Shady Hill Cares Fund In late April of 2020, with COVID-19’s economic impact making itself felt, the School realized that our financial aid allocations for the coming school year would likely be insufficient. Families who had never expected to need aid were now worried about possible job layoffs, and others already on aid were concerned that the amount awarded would no longer be sufficient. In response, we established the Shady Hill Cares Fund, an extra pool of financial aid available to current families who experience income losses due to the pandemic. No sooner had Mark Stanek announced the new Fund, than it received its first major commitment: $100,000 from a current family. Others joined in, and the total raised swelled. In the subsequent months, eight families were granted assistance due to COVID-19-related hardships. The Fund will continue to accept new applications as family circumstances continue to change. Keeping the community together was the motivation behind the Shady Hill Cares Fund. How gratifying to know that this goal is shared to such a degree.

The photos on this page show students learning at home on May Day, constructing, decorating and playing with their “Assembly Hall cut and build” projects, which were designed by young alumna Hadleigh Nunes ’11, and sent to every student as part of a May Day care package. We may have been apart all spring, but that did not dampen our community’s enthusiasm for this special Shady Hill tradition. We were together in spirit!

The Shady Hill Fund The Shady Hill Fund celebrates an extraordinary year. Our donors came together even more powerfully in these unprecedented times. Their commitment to lift up our students and faculty with their tremendous support is celebrated in this complete donor listing of parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, TTC graduates, and employees who were committed to making the Shady Hill student experience extraordinary and meaningful. We celebrate the donors who helped the Fund exceed the budgetary goal and thank them for their commitment to our mission. Some of the Shady Hill Fund’s success included the annual May Day of Giving where alumni and parents continue to contribute, in order to unlock donor matches. Everyone’s participation helped the School to do more and go above and beyond in service to our students. We thank them all for being part of this outstanding community!

“ Shady Hill has been a life changing experience for our son. The warmth of the faculty and intellectual and physical freedom the school provides has allowed him to thrive and grow. We could not be more grateful to the school. Our goal is to do anything we can to help the school continue to foster its warm and nurturing environment. From our gratitude comes our giving to the Shady Hill Fund; we know that together with every other gift, our donation has real impact: helping the school foster its nurturing environment. Giving to Shady Hill brings us great joy.”

Lisa M. Brown, Ph.D., ’81 is a professor of psychology and dean of social sciences at Austin College, the Lisa M. Brown ’81 oldest institution of higher education in Texas, and one that prides itself on being “majority minority.” After COVID-19 sent most students home, Lisa, like educators everywhere, continued supporting students and helping lead her institution. “Often there is the illusion that all college students are alike when some of our students are food insecure at home or don’t have a home to go to.”

“ Above all, we love Shady Hill because of the joy our children feel learning here. The school has concocted the perfect mix, combining a beautiful campus, a rigorous curriculum, an exceptionally talented and devoted faculty, a diverse and invested community, a thoughtful pragmatism, and a healthy dose of whimsy, to achieve an environment and experience that feels perfectly tailored to our three very different learners. We are grateful every day that this is where our family will spend these formative years of their childhoods.” –Delayne and Noah Seton P ’29, ’27, ’24

The Willow Tree Society The Willow Tree Society recognizes individuals who have provided for Shady Hill School’s future through a bequest, trust, gift annuity, retirement plan, or other similar vehicle. Taking its name from the majestic willow trees that have graced Shady Hill’s landscape since the School’s early years, the Willow Tree Society honors donors who think and plan for the long-term future – just as a gardener planting a tree knows its full mature grandeur is many decades off. One such planner was Tare Newbury ’53. On this very page two years ago, Tare wrote, “I value SHS and all that it has done for me, the result being that I contribute to every annual fund and have included Shady Hill in my estate plan with a bequest. It’s what I want to do to help a wonderful institution continue to grow and prosper.” Tare passed away suddenly last November, to the shock and sadness of the Class of 1953. (See page 30 the spring Magazine for the lovely tributes from his classmates.) But years before his death, Tare named Shady Hill as a partial beneficiary of his retirement plan – a savvy decision, since monies in tax-deferred retirement accounts can owe heavy taxes if left to relatives, but are not taxed at all if left to charities. In consultation with Tare’s widow, Sue, Tare’s bequest was steered to the scholarship fund that had just been launched in memory of a young Shady Hill employee who had just succumbed to cancer. (See page 4 of this Report for a description of the Cassie Firenze Fund.)

In conferring with Shady Hill on the use of Tare’s gift, Sue said, “I know Tare would be thrilled to have his Shady Hill bequest go toward this scholarship fund. The School meant so much to him! As his wife of 56 years I heard more charming childhood stories about Shady Hill than I could possibly count. And we had such fun having his classmates at our home for reunions over the years.” Tare volunteered for Shady Hill over many decades, not only hosting reunions but also serving as class agent, encouraging fellow alumni to give back to the school. With that in mind, we remind readers that the Willow Tree Society welcomes new members at any time; more information is available at www. shs.org/plannedgiving, or by phoning Betsy Ginsberg, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, at 617-505-5225.

Bill Bellows, who taught seventh grade from 1964-85, coached basketball, and was renowned for his love of history and his extensive necktie collection, passed away on July 4, 2019 at the age of 96. During his 21 years at Shady Hill, one of his great joys was working with the Teacher Training Center (TTC) apprentices – so much so that his family asked that any memorial gifts people might wish to make be earmarked for the TTC. Bill also designated Shady Hill as a beneficiary of a charitable trust. Those funds reached Shady Hill last fall, and are now boosting the TTC’s endowment in perpetuity. “That is truly a perfect legacy,” according to TTC graduate Jen Tobin Haydock TTC ’85, who benefited from Bill’s mentorship during her apprentice year and beyond, when she ’inherited’ his classroom after he retired. Jen recalled, “Bill was always so passionate about bringing along the next generation of educators. He was generous, welcoming and encouraging to us all. Even in retirement, he would come back to visit, share ideas, and coach me. When I heard that his bequest was aimed towards the TTC, I choked up. I cannot imagine a more fitting legacy.”

Endowment Funds

As of June 30, 2020

A strong endowment means a strong future, and at the same time, reflects a loving and appreciative past. Endowments last forever, growing through skilled investment management and through new gifts — and sometimes whole new funds — added over the years. The quality of today’s School is due in part to the spendable payout that the current budget draws from each of the Shady Hill endowment funds you see below. We are grateful to the donors behind each and every one.

May Day Music Video In a creative collaboration, Shady Hill musicians from all over sent in selfie videos in which they sang or played the beloved May Day Carol. Spliced together, the snippets became a short music video that charmed the Shady Hill community when we circulated it on May Day. (To view the video, visit www.shs.org/alumni)

“ Education fosters both the mind and the heart. In the encouragement and enrichment of our children, school and family share the same noble ends. I am thankful that Shady Hill School carries this responsibility with us, as parents, on the journey of educating our three children. On September 20th, all three of my kids went to school. It was the first time they had gone on the same day since March. When I excitedly mentioned this to a friend, who was also walking with her three children to school, she gave me a happy wave and said, “Hallelujah!” Yes, this is my feeling too, “Hallelujah.” From the start of spring to September 20th, my children have been with us every day and almost every moment. And though this can be wonderful and challenging both, something is missing for them. I am so grateful that Shady Hill provides and creates the opportunity for our kids to learn, and also to play, to enjoy the company of their friends and teachers in ways one can just never give them at home. It is from gratitude for these forms of community and care that our commitment to do all we can to support Shady Hill continues to grow.”

Thank you!

The photo above, taken on Spirit Day last fall, is an apt metaphor for this Report on Philanthropy. Just as the students pictured here demonstrate the joys of teamwork, so too do we celebrate our donors coming together to advance our School’s game plan. It’s all about the team spirit and the fabulous feeling of working hard to achieve a goal we all believe in so deeply: the Shady Hill mission. We need each and every member of our Shady Hill team to get the ball across the goal line and we are grateful for those members who can throw the deep pass as well as those that carry it the final yard. Shady Hill spirit, indeed! –Elizabeth Z. (Betsy) Ginsberg Director of Development and Alumni Relations
