A

From the Head of School & Chair of the Board of Trustees

Our

Mission The image on the front of this report, of a student guided by longtime teacher Sarina Tcherepnin — who is herself a graduate of the School — is meaningful in multiple ways. First, it captures the essence of Shady Hill: the close bonds between faculty and students that lead to a deep and lasting love of learning. Second, it shows a beautiful and moving project our Kindergarten classes worked on last spring: a mural illustrating key themes in their curriculum. “Be an Upstander” and “We are All Alike and We are All Different” are among the phrases our young students designed and painstakingly painted. (A photo of the finished mural appears on page 30.) Third, the pandemic constraints we operated under last year are symbolized in the five colors of the mural’s border: To prevent spread of the virus, we split grades into smaller cohorts, which meant we had five Kindergarten classes, each named for a color. In fact, the mural itself is a pandemic-inspired project. Its genesis came about because our Kindergarten teachers wanted to do a unifying project across all five cohorts, and decided a mural would be the ideal separate-but-collaborative undertaking. Even the remote cohort participated in the planning and design work, and followed excitedly along with the execution. This is just one example of the creativity that flourished at Shady Hill under the pandemic’s constraints. Throughout this Report you will find many other examples of what we are calling Shady Hill’s “pandemic pivots.” Our incredible employees never stopped when their usual paths were blocked, but rather found new ways to proceed. And many of these clever solutions turned out so well they will remain with us beyond COVID! While creativity and resilience were instrumental in getting us through the tough year, so too was the generous support of donors far and wide. We are deeply appreciative of all who stepped forward, demonstrating with their financial support just how much they love and admire Shady Hill. The sense of pulling together was palpable, and the results — summed up on the pages to follow — are gratifying beyond words. Please leaf through these pages to see how important every single donor named here was to Shady Hill’s successful operation during a truly trying time.

Shady Hill School fosters joyful, active learning informed by multiple perspectives—empowering students to be intellectually adventurous and wholeheartedly just. WE BELIEVE • Play and discovery are central to every child’s growth and true exploration takes time. • The purpose of knowledge is to create meaning, develop understanding, and inspire action. • Growing up is a nuanced process and mistakes are catalysts for deeper learning and progress. • A strong, interdependent community is the framework for academic confidence and social and emotional health. • Practicing genuine kindness towards oneself and others helps build a compassionate world. • We have a responsibility—as individuals and as a community—to honor difference, challenge prejudice, and strive for racial and social justice.

Sincerely, Sincerely, Mark J. Stanek Head of School

Hilary Johnston Chair, Board of Trustees 1

2020–2021 Leadership Volunteers

Shady Hill School is immensely grateful to the many generous, talented, and committed volunteers in our community. This listing by no means captures every one of the hundreds of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and friends of the school who gave their time and talents to benefit the Shady Hill community in the 2020-21 school year. Everywhere you turn, volunteers are enriching our school’s programming, student experience, fundraising efforts, and faculty & staff. Thank you for your commitment to Shady Hill School! Forced to re-engineer the School’s service learning work this year, our coordinators designed projects that could be done while social distancing. In this example, students – working in their regular classrooms – made Valentines for frontline workers at nearby Mt. Auburn Hospital. Read on for further examples of Shady Hill’s “pandemic pivots.”

Rick A. Jarvis ’78 Fund for Financial Aid It was a great shock to the Shady Hill community last October when Rick Jarvis ’78 passed away suddenly of heart failure, at age 57. Rick was not only an active alumnus but also a highly engaged member of the parent body, with one child still at Shady Hill (then in Grade VI) and two who had graduated already. Immediately following the tragic loss, Rick’s widow Karla and the couple’s three children, Dewey ’09, Charlie ’11, and Ty ’23, crafted the following announcement: We called him Mr. Shady Hill. In our eyes, he embodied Shady Hill and carried its spirit far beyond Coolidge Hill. As a proud parent, he believed in the magic of childhood, and as an active member of our community, Rick sought to create an inclusive environment. He was quick to offer friendship to newcomers and weave them into the fabric of our Shady Hill community. Meeting him was experiencing the warmth of being welcomed with open arms. And telling him your name meant that The Jarvis Family on a trip to Disney World in 2016 on any street corner of Cambridge, you would inevitably be susceptible to his loud and exuberant greetings. Rick often spoke of the lessons learned at Shady Hill, and how they shaped him into the leader we all knew and loved. Helping his community was his life’s work, and he was more than happy to share that passion with Shady Hill. As a student, he developed a love of learning, a strong sense of self, and became comfortable in his own skin. Those were the gifts that he received from Shady Hill. We hope for others to get this same opportunity, through the establishment of a financial aid fund that will allow others to become a part of our special community. It is our privilege to be part of the Shady Hill family, and we honor Rick’s legacy by helping others receive those same gifts, regardless of race or socioeconomic status. This statement, which the family linked to Rick’s online obituary, invited donations to financial aid at Shady Hill, in Rick’s memory. Matt and Einat Ogden, current parents and great admirers of Rick’s, immediately made a generous pledge to ensure the drive’s success. Dozens of other gifts streamed in, often accompanied by poignant words of tribute. The resulting Rick A. Jarvis ’78 Fund for Financial Aid will forever be part of the School’s endowment, bringing a Shady Hill education into reach for more students, in perpetuity. As Mark Stanek said when breaking the devastating news of Rick’s passing to the community, “We will remember Rick for his warmth, humor, and devotion to friends, family, and all things Shady Hill. In many ways, he was the very embodiment of Shady Hill’s values and culture.” 3

The Shady Hill Fund The Shady Hill Fund celebrated another successful year in which donors demonstrated their love of Shady Hill through loyal annual giving. Our donors’ generosity enabled Shady Hill to open in the middle of a global pandemic, providing a safe in-person learning environment for students and serving as a model for other schools. Broad participation and generous stretch giving helped the Shady Hill Fund exceed the budgetary goal—which proved vital because all the Covid 19 related adaptations required this year far exceeded the School’s normal budget. As always, this complete donor listing recognizes gifts of all sizes from parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, TTC graduates, and employees. The May Day of Giving, in its third year, continued as a catalyst for donors to celebrate the cherished Shady Hill traditions, and the fact that this year we were also celebrating students’ return to campus added even more love and gratitude to the mix. We thank all donors for their profound and unwavering commitment to the Shady Hill mission. We appreciate each and every donor for being part of this outstanding community that joins together to lift up students and faculty!

PANDEMIC PIVOT

Given the mandate not to gather in person, Shady Hill’s communitybuilding events took all sorts of creative shapes last year. For instance, New Parents were treated to goody bags hand-delivered by volunteers, to snack on during BINGO Night, where eighth graders served as game hosts in the Zoom breakout rooms. And all parents got to enjoy Trivia Nights on a grade-by-grade basis. Meanwhile, the Shady Hill Fair took a completely novel shape, making ambitious use of multiple platforms, both on and off screen.

1915 Society PANDEMIC PIVOT

With campus tours off the table, our Admission team created a coloring book to familiarize Lower School applicants with campus. Parents reported that their children not only enjoyed the book, but that it served as a helpful tool to prepare for the transition to Shady Hill. One new Beginner’s parents even reported that their child became tremendously attached to it, reading and rereading it all summer. Another innovation that will outlast the pandemic!

In a survey, Grade VIII students were emphatic about their eagerness to perform the traditional May Day ribbon weaving dance, so we found a way to adapt it to the pandemic’s no-large-groups protocol: Each gradehead section did the maypole dance separately, to keep from blending cohorts.

Our beloved Black History Assembly, though moved to Zoom, successfully continued the student-led tradition of raising awareness of the rich contributions of Black people. The musical collaboration shown here took the song Lift Every Voice and Sing to new heights, reminding us all of the importance of a more equitable and inclusive future. It was just one of many poignant moments across the year that proved that powerful sentiment is indeed possible in a virtual medium.

Grade VI students connect Music and Central Subject by performing their own original, Africa-inspired compositions at the Rites of Passage capstone event. Holding our annual Middle School Social Justice Day on Zoom was a first, but only added to its power thanks to a moving keynote address from alumni Pam Brooks and Deborah Mendelsohn of the Class of ’67, who recounted their shared history of protests beginning in their Shady Hill days. Remoting in from Ohio and Arizona, respectively, they added immeasurably to the conference-style lineup of workshops led by faculty, all designed to deepen our Middle Schoolers’ understanding of identity, oppression, and ways to be allies and changemakers.

It should be noted that Mark Stanek was unable to co-host as originally planned, due to contracting a breakthrough case of COVID – reminding us all that precautions are important even for the vaccinated.

Faculty Funds

A strong endowment means a strong future, and at the same time, reflects a loving and appreciative past. Endowments last forever, growing through skilled investment management and through new gifts — and sometimes whole new funds — added over the years. The quality of today’s School is due in part to the spendable payout that the current budget draws from each of the Shady Hill endowment funds you see below. We are grateful to the donors behind each and every one.

Shady Hill invested in five tents, to create sheltered outdoor teaching spaces. When winter came, we upgraded the tents with flooring, flaps and propane heaters (always keeping some flaps open for ventilation, though) and electricity, so teachers could run projectors and other audiovisual equipment.

Sam ’13, Sophia ’21, and Caleb Chester ’17, showing off various SHS creations in 2017.

Not Your Typical “Graduation Gift” This spring, with their youngest child’s Shady Hill graduation approaching, Lael and Charlie Chester began to feel wistful about the end of their long run as Shady Hill parents. Sam, their eldest, had started as a Beginner in 2002. Their son Caleb and daughter Sophia followed, and now Sophia was on the cusp of graduation.

Lael, a Shady Hill alum in her own right, sent Mark Stanek a note that began, “Charlie and I are feeling nostalgic about the impending end to our almost twodecade journey as Shady Hill parents and have been reflecting on and appreciating SHS’s special ways of education.” They went on to say they had decided to make a gift in commemoration of all that their children — indeed, their whole family — had gained from Shady Hill over the years.

In consultation with Mark and Development Director Betsy Ginsberg, the Chesters agreed to position their generous “graduation gift” as a new endowed fund supporting financial aid. “It feels good to know that, through financial aid, other families long into the future will watch their children benefit from this extraordinary School, just as ours has.”

Financial aid is a top priority for Shady Hill, and we welcome help from any others — whether they be alumni, PALS, current parents, grandparents past or present, or any others — to boost this pressing need.

Endowment Giving Shady Hill Endowment for Financial Aid Fund

Ten of Shady Hill’s endowment funds were boosted by new donations in Fiscal Year 2021. (And another was created from scratch, to honor Rick A. Jarvis ’78; see pg. 3 for that report.) We offer thanks to all the donors who demonstrated their generosity and long-term vision by supporting the endowment.

Established in 2014, this permanently restricted fund provides an endowment draw to support financial aid in order to ensure an inclusive, socioeconomically diverse community. Eleanor S. Campbell *

The Willow Tree Society

The Willow Tree Society recognizes individuals who have provided for Shady Hill School’s future through a bequest, trust, gift annuity, retirement plan, or other similar vehicle. The Society takes its name from the beautiful willow trees that have been beloved features of Shady Hill’s landscape over the decades. The campus’s current majestic willow tree took years to reach full maturity, just as planned gifts do. Gifts seeded today will benefit Shady Hill years from now. We welcome new Willow Tree Society members at any time; more information is available at www.shs.org/plannedgiving. We are deeply grateful to all listed below, who are already members. Susan B. “Lifelong Friendships, Lifelong Gratitude” It is common to hear Shady Hill alumni say the School shaped them, and just as common to hear that their Shady Hill classmates remain among their closest lifelong friends. Elizabeth (Biz) Paynter and Pat Pratt, of the class of 1944, were two such graduates, cherishing their Shady Hill memories and going to great lengths to attend reunions. In 2019, at age 89, both made it a point to come to campus for their 75th Reunion. For Biz, that required a long Uber ride with her home health aide beside her and a folding wheelchair in the trunk. At the Reunion, alumni gathered to watch the Grade IV Greek Olympics, prompting Pat Pratt to pick up a discus to see if she could still throw it, having learned the technique here, in the 1930’s. To the delight of her friends, and the amazement of our students and P.E. teachers, she executed a perfect throw, proving that she still had the knack, eight decades later. Both Pat and Biz have passed away in the two years since that Reunion, and both of them included Shady Hill in their estate plans. In forwarding the gift from his mother’s estate last fall, Biz’s son Randy said, “My mother made life-long friends at Shady Hill and held the school near to her heart. We are immensely grateful to Shady Hill for bringing her such happiness over so many decades.”

Highest Impact Donors of 2020–2021

Looking back on fiscal year 2021, we are grateful to each and every one of the 1,397 donors who collectively gave and pledged $3.05 million to Shady Hill School. We particularly recognize the following benefactors, whose gifts of all types, as well as new pledges, are aggregated in the roster below. These aggregated amounts comprise support of the Shady Hill Fund, pledge payments for the STEAM building and the Grade VI building, and for endowment, including new endowed financial aid funds that pay homage to two beloved members of our community: Cassie Firenze and Rick Jarvis. Shady Hill would not be the school it is today without the strong philanthropic backing of those in a position to give so generously. On behalf of all who learn and grow at this fine school – now and in the future – we offer deep thanks.

“ We feel fortunate to have our children at a school whose values align so closely with our own. Shady Hill fosters a love of learning, a deep intellectual curiosity, and a strong sense of community. We see our capital less as a charitable donation, and more as a direct investment in support of a mission and community in which we believe.”

Thank you!

“The photo above captures the installation last June of our Kindergarten mural, illustrating the importance of being an “upstander.” Our students were rightfully proud of their collaboration and its glorious results. In a similar vein, I hope all donors who supported Shady Hill in our unprecedented 2020-2021 year will look back with pride on the hard work, creativity and teamwork that pulled us all together despite the global pandemic that kept so many other schools closed. The spirit of Shady Hill Upstanders has never been stronger!”
