The Teaching Training Course (TTC) Full immersion in a classroom working with master teachers is the best way to learn how to teach. Katharine Taylor was ahead of her time when she founded the Shady Hill School Teacher Training Course. Each year, Shady Hill’s teacher preparation program cultivates a cohort of 15–18 aspiring teachers of diverse backgrounds who love children, want to lead classrooms centered around children’s questions and ideas, and are committed to equity and access for all children. While there is much talk about 21st century skills and Common Core standards, the TTC remains steeped in the belief that good teaching is student-centered, engaging, project-based, and driven by children’s natural curiosity. At Shady Hill, no discipline is taught in isolation. Instead, each is explored in its real world context and connections to other fields. Collaborations with renowned universities, local public schools, state and national organizations such as Breakthrough Collaborative and City Year allow Shady Hill to recruit and develop excellent candidates for teaching. Our affiliation with the Massachusetts Department of Education broadens the scope of state approved licensure programs and facilitates Shady Hill’s influence on education policy.

The apprenticeship is the heart and soul of our program because it gives our cohort members the chance to observe and practice teaching in a classroom setting with plenty of support and guidance. We place each apprentice with a Directing Teacher, an experienced practitioner with whom an apprentice shares in day-to-day planning and teaching. The apprentice works for four full days with the Directing Teacher, followed by a workshop day out of the classroom taught by Shady Hill’s faculty. In individual weekly conferences, the apprentice and Directing Teacher discuss issues related to the apprentice’s growth as a teacher and professional development. An apprentice has two placements during the school year in two different classrooms. Some apprentices opt to move off campus to one of our public school sites for the second semester. Placements are made on the basis of individual interests, field of study, licensure areas, and availability of directing teachers.

TTC Alumni Careers

The foundational experience an apprentice at Shady Hill gains is pivotal to shaping the teachers and leaders they become. Shady Hill is where apprentices are introduced to a progressive way of teaching, thinking, and innovating. Whether we are sitting together over lunch or meeting with colleagues during a team meeting, our conversations are about children and the multiple ways we aim to engage them. We value the different perspectives at the table and intentionally cultivate a diverse cohort of apprentices to enrich the discussions and the practice of teaching.
