OVERVIEW Kennedy Catholic High School’s mission is to graduate leaders following Christ in a school community that is accessible, diverse, and committed to pursuing the full potential of every student. Any plan allowing students to return to campus for in-person learning will be grounded in this mission. As the State of Washington and King County contain the community spread of the coronavirus, Kennedy Catholic will assess the conditions under which students may return to campus for in-person learning. Although the Archdiocese of Seattle aligned its decision to start the school year implementing 100% distance learning for all students in accordance with the Governor’s Decision Tree for Provision of In Person Learning among K-12 Students at Public and Private Schools during the COVID-19 pandemic re-opening schools and in consultation with Public Health – Seattle & King County, the decision to re-open campuses for in-person learning is a school-level decision. The administrative team at Kennedy Catholic will monitor the local conditions surrounding the coronavirus pandemic and will consult with officials from local public health agencies, and the Archdiocese of Seattle, prior to announcing any decision regarding a return to campus. The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff is the top priority for any return to campus. While risk of exposure and transmission of the coronavirus cannot be eliminated, compliance with the publicly-accepted guidelines for safe interactions, implementation of appropriate health and safety protocols, and control of community spread will establish the necessary conditions to mitigate risks sufficiently to allow a return to campus. If a decision is made to return to campus under the Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan, Kennedy Catholic will phase in implementation until approximately 50% of students are on campus for any given day of in-person instruction. Under a hybrid instructional model, half of our students will attend classes on campus for two consecutive days (A and B schedules, typically on Mondays and Tuesdays) while the other half will attend classes online synchronously at home (following the same schedule). The two groups alternate on Thursdays and Fridays, thereby having every student learn both online and in-person during a school week. Every Wednesday, students will have a day for independent work, individual follow-up with teachers, and potential community building activities, while teachers have additional time for planning and professional development. Please see Schedule for more details.

OVERVIEW CONT. Although the Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan presumes a part-time return to campus for students, Kennedy Catholic may have to adjust these plans depending on circumstances related to the pandemic. It is likely situations may arise related to COVID-19 that necessitate a return to full, distance learning off-campus. While we are prepared for these scenarios to be as seamless a transition for all students, faculty, staff, and families as possible, it important to realize that advance notice may be difficult to ensure in all cases. While we have implemented several precautions to minimize the risk of coronavirus transmission, we recognize that our families have a wide range of comfort levels regarding a return to campus. Until it is possible for Kennedy Catholic to have all students return to campus daily, we will accommodate requests by parents to keep students at home and participate in a 100% distance learning model. This Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan: Returning to Campus was created due to the commitment, dedication, and wisdom of the faculty and staff at Kennedy Catholic who agreed to serve on the Best Practices and Planning Committee. The priorities of health and safety and maintaining the Kennedy Catholic experience are reflected in the specific action steps. Included among these are: • Restricting campus access to only Kennedy Catholic employees and students. Limited visitors will be allowed only with prior appointments. • Adherence to federal and state guidelines published by the Washington Department of Health, Public Health – Seattle & King County, the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the safe return of students to campus, including the wearing of masks and social distancing. • Revised bell schedule to accommodate students who are learning either on campus or at home. • Access to additional support to assist vulnerable and struggling students. • Care for, and support of, faculty and staff. • Developing special programming to enhance the Kennedy Catholic community, especially incoming students. • Commitment to providing as many co-curricular offerings as is permissible within health guidelines.

Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 2

ORIENTATION FOR A SAFE RETURN TO CAMPUS Since hybrid instruction is new for Kennedy Catholic faculty, we will make periodic adjustments to the school calendar to provide teachers with additional professional development and planning time. Professional development will focus on teaching in a hybrid/online environment. When students return to campus, they will be grouped into static cohorts based on last name to allow for better contact tracing should it ever become necessary. Each cohort contains approximately 25% of the student body.

• COHORT 1 – last name begins with A-E • COHORT 2 – last name begins with F-L • COHORT 3 – last name begins with M-Q • COHORT 4 – last name begins with R-Z Once students are allowed to return to campus, each cohort will recieve an in-person orientation where we will emphasize the procedures and protocols to stay healthy and safe. Beginning January 25, 2021, Cohorts 1 and 2 will combine to attend classes in-person Mondays and Tuesdays. Cohorts 3 and 4 will combine to attend classes in-person two days a week on Thursdays and Fridays. It is unlikely that Kennedy Catholic will be able to accommodate requests to shift cohorts, except in cases of hardship or unique circumstances. If you wish to request a cohort placement exception, please submit a request in writing to burnsk@kennedyhs.org no later than January 11, 2021.

Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 3

ACADEMICS We have developed three phases which are dependent upon King County guidelines:

• LANCER DISTANCE LEARNING PLAN: All students use synchronous, online learning five days a week with a published schedule (current plan).

• LANCER HYBRID LEARNING PLAN: This includes face-to-face synchronous and online asynchronous learning. The schedule will split the student body into two groups (last names A-L and last names M-Z) and make sure that students are on campus at least twice a week.

• FULLY IN-PERSON LEARNING: All students on campus five days per week. Students will be in classrooms with altered room arrangements to provide six feet of social distancing. Students will have consistent, assigned seats in each classroom. Some classes will be relocated to larger spaces to accommodate social distancing guidelines. Teachers will use Zoom to video conference, along with interactive display boards for presentation. All classes will use the Canvas platform and assignments will be available there. Movement of students throughout the day will be minimized. Large gatherings will be modified. All-school Masses, assemblies, and school events will be held virtually, or livestreamed. Students will use their own school supplies whenever possible. When materials must be shared, those materials will be sanitized between each use.

TECHNOLOGY Every classroom has been outfitted with the following technology in order to accommodate online and hybrid instruction: • Microphone and camera • Interactive board • Laptop All teachers are trained in Canvas and Zoom to ensure consistency across classes and improve accessibility for all students. Students must be prepared daily with: • Personal computing device – laptop or tablet • Headphones • Camera and microphone capability

SCHEDULE A transition to a hybrid instructional model requires some adjustments to the published daily schedule used during implementation of the Lancer Distance Learning Plan. • Sufficient time must be built into the daily schedule to allow for the health and safety protocols associated with a return to campus. The times must also accommodate the needs of students who are participating from home. • A staggered start provides time to conduct the daily screening of students attending on campus. • We must also allow additional time for purposeful transition between classes and individual cleaning of desks and chairs.

Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 6

*If Kennedy Catholic is required to return all students to the Lancer Distance Learning Plan, administration will determine whether the school will follow the Wednesday unified schedule as published here, or an alternative schedule to be published at a later date.

HEALTH & SAFETY The ongoing pandemic is affecting every member of the Kennedy Catholic community in some way and has necessitated an ongoing assessment of individual and community health and well-being. • Kennedy Catholic teachers, counselors and administrators will assess needs of students by reviewing all data sources including attendance, grades, and student engagement. • Parents and guardians are encouraged to reach out to teachers, counselors, and administrators when concerns about their students arise. • The Lancer Distance Learning Plan and the Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan have significantly increased demands on the faculty and staff of Kennedy Catholic. It is essential to assess the needs of faculty and staff wellness, technology, grading, communication, and professional development. • Kennedy Catholic will use asynchronous days to provide additional support for students.

MONITORING Monitor the ongoing needs and wellness of students paying special attention to at-risk students using a combined effort of counseling, academics, and Campus Life offices. Use absence tracking to support students in extended absences due to illness or COVID-19. Maintain virtual counseling appointments for off-campus students and continue in-person appointments for on-campus students. Regularly evaluate the wellness of the faculty and staff.

PROGRAMMING Schedule asynchronous days in order to provide time for wellness activities, community building, and student interaction. Expand roles of Link Crew with monthly check-ins built into the schedule. Create opportunities for students to interact outside of the classroom: retreat programming, virtual assemblies, and monitored athletics.

Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 7

HEALTH & SAFETY CONT. POLICIES & PROCEDURES Enforce the necessity to stay home when feeling unwell, including parental responsibility to check symptoms of a student before they attend school. Per CDC guidelines, employees will be asked to leave campus if they exhibit flu-like symptoms. Faculty, staff, and students will complete a wellness screening including temperature readings. Employees who become sick, will be expected to abide by public health guidelines before deciding to return to work. The following, taken from the King County COVID-19 Response Toolkit, will be the process used to monitor cases: • What is exposure? Person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 happens primarily through close contact (within six feet of someone for 15 minutes or more) and respiratory droplets from an infected person coughing, sneezing, or talking. May occur by close, personal contact. • Sick students or staff who have not been in close contact with anyone with confirmed COVID-19 should be encouraged to follow-up with a medical provider, if possible, especially if symptoms get worse. • If a sick student or staff member has not been tested for COVID-19, remain home for at least 10 days after symptoms began, and, at least 24 hours after fever has resolved, and symptoms have improved. • If a student or staff member has tested negative for COVID-19 and was not in close contact with a person testing positive for COVID-19, remain home for at least 24 hours after the fever has resolved and symptoms have improved. • Sick students or staff who have been in close contact with someone with confirmed COVID-19 are encouraged to get tested and remain home for: » At least 14 days from date of last exposure » And at least 10 days after symptoms began » And at least 24 hours after fever has resolved without the use of fever-reducing medications » And symptoms have improved • Students and staff who have tested positive for COVID-19 must remain at home and cannot return to school until: » At least 10 days have passed since symptoms began » And at least 24 hours have passed since fever resolved (without the use of fever-reducing medications) » And other symptoms have improved • If a student or staff has ONLY ONE short-term symptom, as defined below, they may return to school the next day. A COVID-19 test is not required, though still recommended for anyone experiencing one or more symptoms. A person with a short-term symptom has: » ONE of the following symptoms: fatigue; headache; muscle pain or body aches; sore throat; congestion or runny nose; nausea or vomiting; or diarrhea » AND the symptom begins and resolves in less than 24 hours » AND no known COVID-19 exposure • Sick staff members, or parents/guardians of sick students, should notify Katie Burns at burnsk@kennedyhs.org if they, or someone in their home, tests positive for COVID-19. If students or staff do not have a medical provider, call the King County COVID-19 Call Center between 8am-7pm PST at 206.477.3977 for assistance. Interpreters are available. Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 8

FACILITIES & OPERATIONS A safe return to campus for faculty, staff, and students requires the establishment of new health and safety protocols, ongoing adherence to the recommendations of public health officials, community monitoring, and clear communication.

HEALTH & SCREENING PROTOCOLS Parents will self-monitor their students for symptoms at home using this COVID-19 screening checklist: • A cough • Shortness of breath • A fever of 100.4 F or higher • A sore throat • Chills • New loss of taste or smell • Muscle or body aches • Nausea/vomiting/diarrhea • Congestion/runny nose not related to seasonal allergies • Unusual fatigue In addition, temperature checks and screening will take place at school for students, faculty, and staff. Anyone experiencing symptoms must stay home. Students who are exhibiting signs of COVID-19 at school will be isolated and must be picked up by parents. Unscented hand sanitizer stations will be placed at all main entrances, in every classroom, in every restroom, and in hallways throughout the building. There will be increased handwashing/sanitizing encouraged throughout the day. Water fountains have been closed except for the automated refill stations. Students are asked to bring labeled, reusable water bottles from home. Coughing, sneezing, and hand washing etiquette will be reviewed with all students. Students will be instructed on social distancing expectations and everyone in the building will take precautions to maintain social distancing. Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 9

FACILITIES & OPERATIONS CONT. SCREENING FOR FACULTY AND STAFF Faculty and staff may arrive any time before 7:30am. They must check-in at the main entry using the Skyward Wellness Screening for COVID-19. If temperature is below 100.4 F, the faculty and staff member may can continue working. If temperature is 100.4 F or above, the faculty and staff member must go home immediately. Faculty members must initiate the subsitute process, if needed.

DROP OFF & PICK-UP PROCEDURES FOR BUS TRANSPORTATION Bus pick-up will happen as scheduled with the following changes: • Bus drivers will wear proper PPE. • Front rows will be left vacant to allow for social distancing from the bus driver. • Students will be seated on individual bus benches to adequately social distance. • Driver will check each student’s temperature prior to entering the bus: » If temperature is below 100.4 F, the student is allowed on bus » If temperature is 100.4 F or above, student must not enter the bus and the driver must wait for the student to get an alternate ride home » Each student that has been screened will receive a bracelet, which will be a different color daily • COVID-19 screening on the Skyward application must be completed before the student is able to enter the bus. • Bus Transportation will drop off for school at the main doors. • Dismissal of school is at 2:45pm. The school building will close at 3:15pm and students must leave campus unless they are attending a school-approved, after school activity or athletic practice. The cafeteria food service will close after lunch, however the cafeteria room will remain open until 4:30pm.

Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 10

FACILITIES & OPERATIONS CONT. DROP OFF & PICK-UP PROCEDURES FOR PERSONAL TRANSPORTATION Students may enter the building at one of three locations between 8am – 8:40am. The staggered entrance will be based on last name:

• 8am – 8:20am – student last names beginning with A-E & M-Q • 8:20am – 8:40am – student last names beginning with F-L & R-Z The three doors for entry are: • B-wing 1st floor • Main doors • C-wing basement doors Each station will have staff present to check temperatures and ensure the Skyward Wellness Screening has been completed. Each student will have a temperature check: • If temperature is below 100.4 F, and COVID-19 symptom screening is clear, the student will be given a bracelet for entrance • If temperature is 100.4 F or above, the student will be taken to the Campus Life Isolation Area and parents will need to pick their student up immediately.

VISITORS, PARENTS, & VOLUNTEERS Kennedy Catholic will limit the number of visitors and activities on campus. All visitors, including parents, will be required to go through the COVID-19 screening. All visitors, including parents and volunteers, will be expected to wear a cloth face covering while in the building.

Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 11

FACILITIES & OPERATIONS CONT. CAFETERIA PROGRAM To help ensure the health and safety of our students and employees, the hot lunch program has been modified: • All students may bring their own lunch or participate in the school’s lunch program. Lockers will not be available for student use, so lunches brought from home will need to be carried in backpacks. • Eating lunch will only be allowed in the cafeteria, upper balcony in the gym, or in the outside courtyards. • Students will eat at individual desks rather than lunch tables. Students will maintain six feet of social distancing. • There will be no microwave usage on campus.

CLEANING & DISINFECTING The school will be closed at 3:15pm daily for cleaning and disinfecting. Disinfecting will be carried out according to the CDC guidelines. Student desks and chairs will be cleaned between classes, student exchanges, and lunchtimes. The custodial staff will be disinfecting handrails, doorknobs, and other high-touch surface areas in classrooms, offices, and bathrooms throughout the day. Classrooms, restrooms, and offices will be cleaned and disinfected at the end of each school day. All disinfectant is approved by the CDC for fighting COVID-19, meets EPA standards for safety, and is safely stored. Non-permeable dividers, or barriers, will be placed in high-traffic areas, or areas where it could be difficult to maintain appropriate social distancing. The HVAC system will be monitored to ensure air quality and required flow of fresh air is maintained throughout the building. Classrooms will be flushed twice daily. Filters for the HVAC system have recently been upgraded to meet CDC requirements.

Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 12

FACILITIES & OPERATIONS CONT. FACE COVERINGS As recommended by the CDC, and proclaimed by Governor Inslee, cloth face coverings prevent a person with COVID-19 from unknowingly spreading the virus. • All employees are required to wear a cloth face covering. Face shields will be available to faculty, as needed, during instruction. • All students are required to wear a cloth face covering while in the building. Face covering must be plain, no writing, or Lancer-themed. Face masks are required at all times. Students who continually refuse to wear a mask or need constant reminders will be sent home until behavior is corrected. Ongoing non-compliance may result in exclusion from on-campus activities until there is a return to full, in-person learning.

DISTANCING Classrooms, and all learning spaces, are set up for six feet of distancing. Large gatherings will be modified or suspended. A plan for all-school Masses, and other events on campus, is being developed to ensure all students have the Kennedy Catholic experience. We will restrict activities that do not meet distancing requirements until public health guidelines permit.

FOOT TRAFFIC Hallways and staircases are clearly marked in order to maintain social distancing. Social distancing signage is installed to direct waiting areas and foot-traffic. There will be increased passing time between classes to allow for directional hallways and staircases. There will be extra supervision between classes and lunches to ensure social distancing is maintained.

Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 13

FACILITIES & OPERATIONS CONT. MITIGATION PROCEDURES Protocols will be followed when a student or staff member exhibits symptoms and/or tests positive for COVID-19, including the following mandatory procedures: • Parents/guardians must notify the Dean of Students if a student receives a positive COVID-19 test • Employees must notify the Dean of Students if they receive a positive COVID-19 test • Public Health of Seattle King County will be notified of every positive test result and its recommendations will be followed on a case-by-case basis We will follow contact tracing protocols in the event of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. An isolation room in the Campus Life office will be used to assist students or employees who are ill while transitioning from school to home. These guidelines will change as guidance changes.

Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 14

STUDENT LIFE KENNEDY CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY Students will attend prayer services and Masses virtually or in-person, as distancing allows. Retreat programming has been modified for virtual, and partial, in-person events based on the current phasing and social distancing requirements.

ATHLETICS The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has posted a revised athletic schedule that will be followed along with the federal and state guidelines for returning to play.

CLUBS & ACTIVITIES Clubs and Activities remain active and continue to meet both in-person and virtually. The daily bulletin lists meeting times and information.

Lancer Hybrid Learning Plan | 15

COMMUNICATIONS KENNEDY CATHOLIC EVENTS All events will be evaluated with a criterion developed by the Planning Committee. These evaluations will be given to the administrative team to determine viability. The expectation is that all events and interactions with external communities will be conducted virtually, or follow phasing and public health guidelines. If restrictions are eased, protocols will be developed for future gatherings.

COMMUNICATION We are committed to providing ongoing communication to our families. A Frequently Asked Questions page is generated from questions we are receiving from families, students, faculty, and staff.
